ODST: First Contact

It is the year 2525, and humanity has spread itself across the Milky Way Galaxy thanks to the development of faster-than-light "slipspace" travel. United under the flag of the United Nations Space Command, or UNSC, colonial expansion continued and by 2490, UNSC colonial space encompassed over 800 worlds, large and small, in the Orion Arm. The resource rich Outer Colonies contributed to the prosperity of the Inner Colonies as they relied heavily on raw materials supplied by the Outer Colonies. This buildup of resources led to the Inner Colonies becoming established as major military and economic strongholds. Tensions have been steadily escalating between the older and more stable "Inner Colonies" and the remote "Outer Colonies", leading to rampant civil war and uprisings.

One such Outer Colony, Nimbus, is currently in the middle of civil protests, demanding independence from the UEG. While Nimbus houses a small Garrison of UNSC soldiers, its primary force is the considerably larger Nimbian Militia, who have joined in the civil protests and refuse to recognize the UNSC or UEG. The UNSC has sent a small force tasked with pacifying the unruly colony and has sent an ambassadorial detail to begin talks with the Colony and resolve the conflict in a peaceful manner, and has yet to commit a significant number of military forces.

Alongside the Ambassadorial Detail, a small task force of elite ODST teams have been deployed to Nimbus to discreetly aid in peacekeeping efforts, to safeguard the Ambassadorial detail, and to target key Nimbian Militia targets should the need arise. Their numbers and support are limited, and their presence is covert, as to avoid alarming the already unstable colony. The ODSTs are supported by a UNSC stealth Prowler, The Red Glare- attached to the UNSC battlegroup in the system.

Meanwhile, lightyears away, a mysterious group rapidly approaches the colony, with hostile intentions, their names and purpose hidden behind walls of top-secret bureaucracy by the highest branches of the Government.

Hello and welcome to my RP: ODST: First Contact. I don't normally do fandom RPs, but I've always had a distinct fascination with the Halo Universe, and me and my roommate just finished Co-op binging every single split-screen abled Halo Game in the past 3 days. This particular RP takes place in a fictional colony, Nimbus, in the Outer Colonies of the UNSC- in the same general situation as Harvest- just with some extra political dissent thrown in there. In this plot-line, Harvest has very recently fallen, but has been kept hushed up by the upper echelons of the government as to prevent mass panic and hysteria. Our group of players, will take on the role of elite Orbital Drop Shock Troopers, because I've always enjoyed the idea of being a bit more joe than the average joe, but not to the superhuman standards of those freak-of-nature-child-soldiers; the Spartans. Originally sent to the planet for peacekeeping purposes, will find ourselves forced to rapidly adapt to a new and terrifying enemy: The Covenant.

While the Covenant are nothing new or surprising to us seasoned 21st century videogame jocks and nerds, I expect being confronted by non-human life and weird glowy-burny stuff that has never before been witnessed to be quite a shocking and possibly scarring event, and I wish to capture these moments through the eyes of our characters.

All of this being said, I am by no means a Halo expert, and in many cases may be encompassed in terms of background knowledge by many of you. I welcome any manner of background information or lore to help simulate the realism of this RP.

Rules and Guidelines

First things first, this will be an RP of advanced standards, and will be expecting detail to be made and attention to be paid. I'm going to trust that everyone knows the basic premises of not being a dick, cooperating with each other, and not doing to others what you wouldn't want done to yourself.

This RP will also be a relatively small group of 4-6 players, including myself, and will not be first come first served.

Background, Equipment, Etc

Character Sheets

Player Roles

I am a personal fan of smaller scale RPs, as such, I will only be accepting 4-5 other players to join me in this adventure. While you are free to make your character however you like, acceptance to this RP will be judged by me, and is not on a first come, first served basis. While not necessary, there are several roles I would like to see filled:
  • The Veteran - This player will be the oldest member in the squad. He/she will likely be the most jaded and cynical member of the team. He will be the backbone of the team, providing courage to the squad, and may provide guidance to the younger squad leader throughout the RP.
  • The FNG (The Fucking New Guy) - This player should be among the youngest members of the team, as well as the least experienced. He has many roles, such as serving as a convenient reason for characters/npcs to explain and describe the lore that, while known to the characters in the world, is otherwise new or unknown to the players themselves. This character might also have a brighter outlook than his/her compatriots, and if necessary should be the optimistic character of the bunch.
  • The Squad Leader - This player will be the leader of the PC squad. His/her character will likely be the most experienced (aside from the veteran), and will have the most combat experience and skill. This player will have responsibilities as the Team's leader, and will have to make important decisions throughout the RP, along with managing and dealing with the clashing personalities of the squad- as well as the difficulties some of the NPC soldiers may give him/her. Needless to say, if you for some reason wish to play an antisocial character, this is not the role for you.

Standing in at 6', Tommy posses a somewhat lanky, athletic build, with lightly tanned skin, pock marked with a few scars from old battles. His jet black hair is short and has noticable waves, but is typically kept out of the way, and he typically keeps his facial hair clean and professional. He has an angular face, with prominent features and cool green eyes. He has the ODST patch tatooed onto his left arm.

Name: Kensington, Thomas
Gender: Male
Age: 25
Rank: Corporal
Specialization: Combat Engineer
Callsign: K-Ton

Psychological Analysis:
Relaxed and lazy, yet competent and acceptably professional, Tommy is a confident and efficient ODST trooper. A generally good natured man with strong feelings of camaraderie towards team mates. Prideful and loyal, Tommy is unafraid to break protocol and regulations and regularly does so, but can adhere to strict orders when prodded. Casually boastful of his abilities, Kensington has a can-do attitude towards most tasks, though is typically a relaxed and easy going individual, able to keep calm in most circumstances. His confidence and boastful nature often come off as arrogant or ignorant, but his comrades have generally concluded most of his big talk to be hot air to lighten the mood.

Military Background:
Thomas Kensington, also known as "K-Ton", and occasionally "Kilo", or "Kenzie" by his comrades, was an only child, son to a Captain Kensington and a nurse mother. With a strong military background, Tommy had a fairly rigid childhood, as his parents sent him to military academies for most of his youth, hoping to mold him into the ideal military soldier. As a youth Tommy performed well in school and sports alike, though was often disciplined for disrupting class, fighting and arguing with teachers and students. Nevertheless, Tommy graduated with honors, and upon graduating from high school Tommy forwent a scholarship at the esteemed Reach Military Institute, and joined the UNSC Marine Corps.

Upon graduating from the Marines basic training, Tommy was slotted to a role in with the Combat Engineers, where he worked with machines and equipment, as well as explosives on the frontlines. He served in the Cappadocia Campaign, fighting off insurrectionists attacks on one of the outer colonies, where he distinguished himself by converting Scorpion tank canister shells into am improvised explosive trap to incapacitate a sudden attack by insurrectionist forces on their base. After this campaign, Tommy applied and was recruited into the Orbital Drop Shock Troopers.

After more extensive training, Tommy was accepted into the ranks of the ODSTs, and assigned to the 21st Shock Troops Battalion. Over the next 4 years, Tommy took place in several campaigns against Insurrectionists, and traveled across dozens of worlds. As a former engineer, Tommy specialized in dealing with mechanical and electronic systems, as well as explosives and ordnance usage. Tommy was right at home with his brothers landing on planets in SOEIVs, but excelled in tactical operations, where his skill as an engineer shone more than his skill as a rifleman.

At the recommendation of his unit leader, Tommy was reassigned to the 42nd Tactical, which focused mainly on Deep Ground Surveillance or Long Range Reconnaissance missions. Tommy has spent a year with the 42nd, as the team's resident tech-monkey and explosives expert.

  • M6C Magnum

Interested. Question though; are we allowed to use gear from any Halo game so long as it doesn't particularly require spartan armor to utilize? Just checking because I don't remember the dmr being in ODST.

@Treue I'm trying to stick to 'early' era weapons, Halo ODST takes place well into the Human-Covenant war, whereas this RP takes place right at the beginning, so the closest approximation to that is the Halo Reach era weapons and earlier- most of the weapons I've listed have been in service for some decades, or in the battle rifle's case, right before the start of the human-covenant war. As far as our characters are concerned, Spartans don't exist.

Shameless double post

I would just like to say I will be using the DMR along with dual SMG's, smokes and frags. I will also fill your FNG role.

Dual smg's may be impractical, and difficult to manage- the recoil for a single smg fired fully automatic is difficult enough, and is held in 2 hands, the recoil for two separate smg's firing at once would be extremely difficult for one to accurately use.

@vietmyke I'm really interested, and I'd love to reserve a spot for applying! I'll get working on a CS. Would you prefer that they be posted here or PM'd to you?

EDIT: Nevermind, you've answered that question already!

Accuracy wouldn't exactly be the purpose of them, that'd be the DMR's job. If you'd prefer I could go with another primary weapon instead of the second SMG, maybe the M319 Grenade Launcher? If not I'll just go with the Magnum like you.

EDIT: Two ideas I'm currently toying with would increase the effectiveness of the SMG'S however.

The general feel for this rp is more of a realistic, gritty, special operations rp than it is a run n' gun with Michael Bay explosions rp.

Weapons like grenade launchers and rocket launchers and even heavy machineguns will be assigned/given to the party in character, via either hidden weapons cache, or retroactively assuming they've had it and have been saving it for a rainy day.

As such, the only weapon I'd accept being dual weilded would be pistols, and even that would be difficult. Have you ever tried reloading a weapon with another weapon in your other hand? Not easy.

@Sep, oh sep, wherefore art thou Oh sep. Is it safe to assume the old stomping ground is no more? I tried checking back there a few times back and no one was there, not even overlord Ellri

I actually have reloaded weapons while holding another. It's pretty manageable. Shame though, that would have been an interesting loadout with the conservative tactical usage of bounced grenades and EMP's, and skilled control bursting of the automatics. By the way, I get the realism thing, though I'd like to point out that many real life weapons are capable of mounting 40 mm grenade launchers under the barrel on a rail. Also the grenade launcher in the game was nowhere close in power to the rocket launcher or turret. Hell, it was weaker than a regular frag.

CS is kinda done. Not 100% happy so I might run back and rewrite some stuff later, but I think it's just about ready for feedback now since I've got the general idea down.

Name: Niella, Mira
Gender: Female
Age: 33
Rank: Lance Corporal
Specialization: Veteran/Sniper
Callsign: Iron

Psychological Analysis:

Mira remains still calm and collected, whenever its mission time. However off-times she is closed-off, and spends what free time she has preparing for the next mission. This behaviour is rather the product of having killed more civilians, or as the UNSC has designated rebels or terrorists. One part is the guilt of not being able, to mingle amongst people she had likely shot in outer colonies. The other part is more personal and namely because she is a rather meek and not comfortable amongst large social gatherings. The few times she has spend with her squad off-time - she is a rather sociable gal, with years of experience and crazy stories.

Military Background: Mira Niella was an Earth-born, namely in the United Republic of North America around the countryside of Ottawa. Her family had been an average military family with her father being an ex-soldier - the only noteworthy thing being that her father had been a Designated Marksman during his tour of duty, but not as high as being an ODST.

Her record remained for the time unimpressive - basic training showed she had a skill with a rifle, being given a few more years worth of training. Eventually graduating as a sniper around the age of twenty, after which she was slotted into the 3rd Rapid Response Unit around the Outer Colonies. Officially it was to protect against piracy, unofficially it was to prevent the early rebellions from flaring too high.

She gained infamy during one colony uprising, from where her entire squad got jumped and mauled by the civilian unrest. Leaving only her and her commanding officer alive - High Command had given the order to eliminate the rebel leaders and restore order. That namely meant a cat-mouse game of having her pick of civilians one by one all by herself, because she was the only one whom could kill without being spotted.

After that Incident, Mira was awarded for her coolness in battle and promoted upto ODST training. Behind closed doors, she wished to simply shoot herself at the large loss of life. ODST-training allowed her to but some of that mission behind her - by choice or by having the Instructors beat the memory out of her. After she was deployed back to the Outer Colonies again, while a similar incident didn't happen to her again - the purpose behind her missions remained the same. Kill any unruly civilian or rebel leader, without anybody being the wiser.

Name: Berne, Ruben
Gender: Male
Age: 37 (Born 23rd of April, 2488)
Birthplace: Far Isle, Outer Colonies
Appearance: Ruben's skin is tinged with an auburn perma-tan, paying deference to his Armenian mother without distinguishing him notably from a well-sunned Caucasian. Silvered wisps of helmet-mottled hair drape irreverently over his face, pressing, in patches, to his sweat-glistened brow ill-cooled by the haberdashery of his visor's vents. Ruben is customarily athletic, though his Olympian form is spoilt, somewhat, by blotched, ill-pigmented skin and copious freckles that can only have been a heritage of his Celtic past. In his armour, Ruben stands around a clumsy 6'1", having been a rank and file barrack-bound solider for much of his career, and a privileged pencil-pusher before that, his military experience has not afforded him the appearance of grace when standing in 80kg of vacuum sealed spacesuit.

Rank: Sergeant (Assigned through ONI's command structure)
Specialization: Translation, Flora Expert
Callsign: Ruben has not acquired a nickname as of yet, his surname "Berne" being sufficently snappy so as to serve as his diminutive form.

Psychological Analysis: Results of extensive ONI observation would suggest the operative in question is, at all times, motivated by an entrenched inferiority complex, perhaps the direct result of his being impressed as a young child and subsequent installation into a hostile civilian environment. The UNSC is, of course, culturally amorphous, but owing to his origin, the son of willing subjects of a rebellious and famously ill-fated colony, Ruben attempts anyway to present himself as a model, reactionary citizen of the inner colonies. Whilst it is unclear to what degree this is a front, Ruben becomes quickly angered when mention is made of the demise of his home-world, and seems often to present himself as that colony's "redeemer", proving to the world that those of his stock can excel both militarily and academically. Far from indulging in what seems to be a cultural norm among his age-group, political dissent, Ruben never misses an opportunity to speak to the superiority of home-world culture seeing as it graciously stepped in to raise him the wake of his destructive rebel parentage.

In addition, the general absence of parental figures in Ruben's upbringing has made him both extremely cynical of others, and at the same time, grasping at affection. Having been subjected to a strict military regime and a series of loveless foster-homes, Ruben generally distrusts the affections of others, finding making any form of emotional en-treatment to any other person to be exceptionally embarrassing, and scoffing at the attempts of others, despite himself. However, those who do show unexpected and unprompted affection can expect a degree of emotional dependency and jealousy. Within the confines of the military, however, Ruben's approach is entirely ideal.

It should be noted that Ruben's entire animus centres around his inherited guilt for Far Isle's rebellion, without any significant attachments to the inner colonies, his general "prove-it-to-the-world" attitude may suffer a shattering reversal were any remaining threads of the Far Isle insurrection to encounter him. A perfect agent to use against the Insurrectionists, it is important he make as little contact with the general population of contentious worlds as possible.

Military Background: Sgt. Ruben Berne, born to a mother and father of Armenian and Irish maritime origins, respectively, spent the first four years of his life on the fringes of Far Isle, a water-world colony with only a single city of perhaps only 700,000 inhabitants. The majority of Far Isle's inhabitants belonged to two petty classes - the subjects of the Amphora Agrarian and Maratime Conglomerate, a company sponsoring colonists with extensive experience in farming and fishing industries, and one which particularly appealed to the descendent of traditionalist subsistence communities, swallowed up by Earth's extensive conurbations - and the subjects of the UNSC sponsored IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature), which sought to use the colony as an "Ark-World", and had lobbied the UEG for quite a significant sum of credits for the task. Regardless of these trivialities, the friction between the peoples of AAMC, who saw their agraian needs increasingly disregarded by the "intellectually aloof" UEG, and the IUCN fostered the circulation of insurrectionist political material within the AAMC's population.

In 2494, shortly after Ruben's 4th Birthday, elements of the insurrectionist sympathisers forcibly accessed a UNSC drydock, and, whilst much of the details are redacted, it can be inferred that the UNSC's subsequent deceleration of CODE: BANDERSNATCH, and razing of the colony, can have only been in response to attempts by these forces to break out of the planet's blockade and deliver warships to the greater insurrection.

Regardless, desperate to reshape the political narrative following the admittedly despotic destruction of an almost entirely defenceless colony, the UNSC deployed its medical corps to tend to the wounded, and used public funds to provide suitable upbringings to those orphaned in the blast. Of course, ONI recognises the need for model, inner-cultured outer-colonists to fill the ranks of the fight against the Insurrection, and therefore, a portion of the allotted humanitarian funds were plied into the military upbringing of some of the rescued children - Ruben amongst these.

In this line, Ruben was installed on Earth, in a series of military schools and academies in the old United Kingdom, borded during the school-year and fostered with retired ONI agents in the summer months. By design, these agents generally possessed apathetic personality tenancies, or were themselves raised in strict and particularly unfeeling homes, in the hopes that this would illicit within Ruben a set of insecurities and dependencies that the military could subsequently fill.

Being an outer colonist, and of mixed race, it was deemed useful that Ruben be instructed in the usage of multiple languages. Whilst the core systems are dominated by the use of English, Spanish, Chinese, and French, the outer colonies have extensive eastern-European and Eurasian influence, with Hungarian, Slavic languages, and Armenian being common. Indeed, many of the UNSC's own battalions in these regions are far more familiar with these tongues than with any commonly used by the EDF or EEF. In this vogue, his military education, in addition to extensive seminars on command and battle-tactics, particularly with focus on Ruben's personal fascination, the illustrious Admiral Preston Cole, was tailored towards a degree-patch which might ingratiate him to the outer-colonists just enough that he may be a persuasive ambassador. Upon the completion of his studies, Ruben was not only a well-prepared ONI-enlistee, he was also a Master-degree Holder of Biological Engineering with Language Studies.

Following his graduation at the age of 25 as an ONI Sergeant, Ruben was then installed as a NCO at the barracks on Eridanus II, tasked with overseeing the mining colonies upon the moon Ehilend, which, at the time were considered particularly prone to sublimation by the Insurrectionist threat, commanding a group of locally sourced recruits. During the 2513 rebellion, Ruben distinguished himself when, as the barracks were assailed by requisitioned scorpion-class tanks, he was able to emphatically persuade his charges to not only refuse to turn over their arms and join their fellow colonists and families in rebellion, but to make a daring nightime assault to sabotage their artillery line, saving the ensuing UNSC reinforcements countless lives and expenses on the loss of military hardware.

Whilst Ruben, in this endevour, showed little athletic or combat excellence, it was this the ingenuity for this covert-op that tapped Ruben for the ODST corps, and as such was subsequently reassigned to the Epsilon Eridani Defence Fleet over Reach to undergo his training. It was here, in 2524, nearing the completion of his training, that a perhaps fortuitous event occurred that may secure the loyalty of Ruben against the insurrectionist threat - the destruction of the "National Holiday" cruise liner over Reach, in full view of Ruben's practice-drop-pod.

Following graduation roughly 18-months ago, Ruben was reassigned to ONI's Red Glare Prowler and its ODST squad, bound for a frontier role in OPERATION: TREBUCHET.
