Solsys Network also uses conversion power, though at this point in time not something they could mount on a toothbrush, Im thinking the smallest generators would be the size of a car engine.
Q-Fabs in the Federation tend to make issues with miniaturization rather negligible.
There are exceptions, though. Like the extensive machinery required to contain and gather power from vacuum so truly small scale use is just counterintuitive.

It will be interesting to see how our factions interact, Plenty in common, but some major differences.

Sovet power generation is a....mess of different technologies pulling in different directions. You've got nuclear power-not anywhere near the level of the Federation. Think Fallout.

Then you've got Tesla power, which at this point works mostly because someone neglected to tell the Soviets it wouldn't work.*

And then you have this lovely cocktail of unstable chemicals they use to power so-called "bioreactors".

<Snipped quote by Ophidian>Don't worry, Federation Starfleet doesn't have that many ships. Expect one or a couple of starships fighting your massive fleet. Generally the security of a system can be guaranteed by one decently equipped starship alone.
I am kinda going with TOS Star Trek's interpretation of how starships were used.
Think of star systems as countries and a starship as a nuclear aircraft carrier. One coasting close to your waters is usually scary enough.

That's how Federation starships were treated straight up until DS9, when ship got all WWII Pacific Theater. Hell, the TOS Enterprise is explicitly capable of glassing planets.

The Terran Union uses a lot of nuclear power too, but they're in the processes of making practical antimatter reactors.

So Telsa tech and Bioreactors would be the points of difference there..

Okay, the who, why, where, and when.

Why do they have infinite ene--
No.

Why are their ships so big?
It's mainly a shock and awe tactic. When something hundreds of times bigger than your ship, perhaps even thousands of times bigger suddenly appears in your system, you're going to likely be fucking terrified, and that's what the Aeolians want. Bring your brown pants when the UU locates a fleet staging area or fleet base.

Why do they not have swivel mounted main guns on their battleships?
They're massive fucking spinal-mounted weapons designed for wiping out entire fleets in spectacular displays of causality and entropy bending. See "Shock and awe".

Can they destroy planets?
No.

Why are organics in charge of an extragalactic empire?
They're a bunch of ruthless motherfuckers, they're not going to let themselves be so easily replaced by machines. That, and I'm calling it tradition to remain organic.

Why do they not discover their own tech?
I thought it'd be interesting to RP them needing to cooperate with other races in the galaxy to manage to get more tech, instead of them coming pre-equipped with every single thing everyone else has but better. Suspension of disbelief please.

What's the Union's goal?
To survive and thrive. Whether that means delaying the heat death of the universe, finding a different one to create paradise in, or just taking everyone the fuck down with them, surviving and thriving is the name of the game.

Why don't they just conquer the Milky Way?
Go searching for a singular ant in a place with no anthills. Squash that ant. Congratulations, you've done what the Union cannot. They've got enough galaxies that they just plain stopped giving a shit about a majority of the unclaimed galaxies.

What's the point of RPing if the Union will just squash us later?
To have fun? To create political intrigue, smash ships together, etc. while the RP is alive? I dunno. vOv. If it's that big of a deal, see above.

Magic?
They've likely mapped it out entirely and figured out its secrets, but they're a technomancer empire, no magic for them. I won't be going into magic with the Union.

Any questions I missed? And @keyguyperson mind if I make a second nation that's way weirder and also provides something more antagonistic without being straight up hyper powerful?

You missed the 'why are they bothering with the universe when they could just play hyper-realistic video games with a matrioshka or jupiter brain, or in other words, a planet-sized or greater hypercomputer that, able to operate extremely fast and handle unimaginably large amounts of data, is able to simulate entire, hyper-realistic or even more complex universes for its creators to goof around in like a horribly advanced Second Life' question?

@LHG100 I didn't think anybody would mention those types of computers. +1 for knowledge! But what's a computer simulation worth, when it can be destroyed by any pissant emergent alien species because everyone's too busy hooked into VR? Plus, ruthlessly efficient, it ain't efficient to play make believe in VR, and they got a universe to bug out of and/or prevent the heat death of.

You can give the VR simulations defenses, kill anyone that gets in the way of it if need be.

What I'm saying is narratively the rest of the Union is irrelevant as the narrative will never see the rest of the Union in any way, shape, or form.

Well.

Eh. In light of the GM ruling, it'd be petty to keep insisting literally everything I'm uneasy about/not convinced of be changed. So.

I suppose I'll just drop it for now, in the interests of the RPG.

Nifty sci-fi pic I found, for anyone who wants to pretty up their profiles/posts.

I've been hoarding them, so I figured it was time to release one or two into the wild.

That's how Federation starships were treated straight up until DS9, when ship got all WWII Pacific Theater. Hell, the TOS Enterprise is explicitly capable of glassing planets.
Well, it differed from episode to episode. Sometimes blowing up an asteroid was an issue or even keeping pace with it required the Enterprise to use their warp drives.
Star Trek and consistency are two entirely different terms.

Anyways, I scale the power of my ships as appropriate for the situation in the NRP. I suppose my tech team can invent or pull some exotic stuff which can destroy an entire planet if that fits the narrative but usually the question, do they really want to?
In this sense I am even closer to Trek, I suppose.

On another note, my starships technically have no weapons. None. Nada.
Q-Bays aren't weapons just used as such and this function is very well veiled.
Starships are also extremely efficient at managing their power thus getting readings on their energy levels outside combat is going to be tricky.
This means if they claim to be just peaceful explorers during first contact situations, they very well appear to be as that.

EDIT:
@Keyguyperson
Alright, I am more or less finished with the required modifications to use my civ here.

Am I cleared to post this in the characters page?

Hmmm. Thinking outloud, I orginally had the Neo-Sovs consisting of humans (modified to be "ideal" or near ideal humans-they're working on that pesky aging problem, consider it almost....a disease) and uber-augmented warrior types, originally slave-soldiers for the fuckers they overthrew. So modified the Neo-Sovs consider them a separate species.

Considering extending that now-because why would the ruthless fucks they overthrew stop at augmenting soldiers? I think it'd be an interesting dynamic-the Neo-Sovs are built around trying to preserve humanity as a reaction to the excesses that led to those augmented soldiers, and the other species if I extend-but they'd also need to take care of, involve, the results of said excesses-the augments they consider separate species.

Which could be interesting to explore.

I've come to the realization that I have no idea what the Terminus' ships will be armed with. I was planning on just going with regular old laser/particle beams/plasma, but I feel like I'd be outclassed by everyone else by a significant margin.

Hmmm, maybe I'll go with something like with what the Reapers in Mass Effect have. Though I get the distinct feeling that molten metal accelerated to a significant fraction of the speed of light would do far more damage than just the big old lasers they appear to be in-game.

Depends on how much metal and what fraction of the speed of light.
But yeah, they had to be more effective than plain lasers because it's basically a water cutter engineered up to eleven. That's bound to be more damaging and incredibly more penetrating than pure DEWs.

my weapons are going to be causality and entropy benders, causing the area hit to speed up locally by a high amount time wise. Then entropy kicks in and crumbles your neat armor. Considering adding microwarp drives to them so they can warp by point defenses.

Good thing my tachyonic lightwave barriers actually protect me from such abuses.
Then again, I am probably the next most developed faction with barely any more ships than you.
And again, that doesn't make me impervious. It just means you won't ignore my defenses.

Howdy ho, I've returned from my long absence with a hankering for some sci-fi fun times. I'm assuming this is still open? There's ten pages of OOC to comb through so I'm not sure of general power levels of things yet but I should have something up that fits once I get myself up to speed.
