I think I scared everyone but you away. Ailyn seemed entertained by her bit on the phone though, so at least my madness contributes to society.

So you're a British accent girl, ey? Fair enough.

As long as you're warm; that's what matters.

I'm aware my last PM was pretty long; I posted something longer in one of the interest check discussions an hour ago.

@Shoryu Magami I think I do that a lot xD

Yep. Well, any accent really. I just love accents. Unless it's a Yankee accent. I'm a weirdo.

True.

Oh hey, no problem. I'm kinda working on a response as my thoughts are sorting themselves. Link me because I'm lazy?

Most people are weird. How weird is where we differ. Then again weird is subjective. Did I mention I turn absolutely everything into a philosophy lesson somehow? Just sayin'... I'm insane.

Disclaimer: Warning, this will probably bore you if you don't find a discussion about how combat mechanics in role-play should be implemented interesting, so don't bother with it if that's the case. I get really irritated when people are bias about this sort of discussion so I feel the need to present the other side of the debate.

@Shoryu Magami No worries. I get what you're saying.

We're all a little insane. Some of us are just more open about it than others.

In that case... you just linked me for nothing xD I may check it out if I get bored, but definitely not at this second.

Sanity is overrated anyway. There's a fine line between madness and genius. No clue where I fall.

Perhaps me going off at the idiocy in the off-topic discussion forum "bitchfest" thread would've been more entertaining then (though since it was all drama maybe not), but c'est la vie. How're you holding up?

I probably shouldn't have said "combat mechanics"; more like I think RPG mechanics being implemented into a role-play basically ruin the depth and complexity of a battle and prevent a genuinely compelling "battle of wits" narrative from taking place, even more so when supernatural powers come into play. I've got a whole database containing thousands (probably; might be hundreds but I've lost track of them all) of notepads devoted to power-scaling all the "broken" (read: nearly everyone) characters in my project, so I know my shit when it comes to this stuff.

Well yeah that is the case for a story that is not meant to be taken as if it were an rpg, but for a story based on such things (like my story) it would be appropriate for dice-rolling and other game mechanics. Though, I do like controlling my characters' fates without basing it on luck. So I'd basically only use dice for things outside of battle like mining ores and cutting wood similar to a way in an rpg.

It makes sense in a game version, but it isn't like you'd actually use dice rolls (while actually writing the story) to determine the outcomes of fight scenes instead of the actual characters' own wits and strategy and use of their powers, right? Surely the story you want to write decides the narrative, not dice.

Yeah like I said I do not like the idea of using dice for that stuff. Stuff like the monster drops (being an rpg type world, it would make sense that they have a drop table with rarities) and professions like lumberjack and mining are what I'd control by dice if anything at all. Of course, I can understand why someone would use dice (especially in a D&D styled rp) for basically everything, though that's not my thing.

I understand the idea behind using the dice in your story, but I'm more thinking along the lines of how you write it. When you're writing a scene, do you let dice (like, literally) decide if a character obtains a drop or do you let the story determine it based on whether they need that drop to move the plot forward? I wasn't actually telling the GM in that thread that it was wrong for him to use dice; I mostly posted up the things I did in response to what I saw as a very bias argument. Even if I oppose a view I don't believe I go about debating it in a manner that's bias.

If there is an item needed, I will definitely give them the item (probably make it take forever because torture is fun amirite) so they can be on their way. Other than that, I don't see any purpose not to make the drops be random.

That's the important part; the mechanics are there but they don't invade on the narrative. When it comes to role-playing a fight scene and you involving RPG mechanics; it always invades the narrative. They don't make things realistic at all.

I mean, I still have game mechanics for fights, but not dice. This is explained in chapter one, sort of like a demo battle, but when two people get into a battle, after making a pact for the fight (which otherwise it would be illegal) and there form an invisible wall circled around them of which displays each fighter's HP, XP, Mana for mages, etc. Though the wall is basically only one sided, in that an outsider may not come in, but someone inside can leave whenever they want (forfeiting the match)

So in a way, there are game mechanics, just implemented in a way that would work for my story. There is also a hub, similar to that of a game, but it's within phones, watches, etc. Just mobile electronic devices.

The invisible wall idea reminds me of some of the concepts I use with my characters' various magic systems, though it's still quite different and I think what you've done makes sense for something that works like an MMORPG with a lot of its mechanics. I didn't know that people had to accept matches, but that's interesting. I like the idea of having a mobile phone work as a hub too; I don't know if an anime has done that explicitly before or not but it's clever and fits the setting you're going for.

I don't think the hub thing has been done before, at least not from what I've seen. SAO just has them holding their hand out or whatever for the hub I can't remember if Log Horizon even has a hub, but I wouldn't doubt it does. Yeah laws and shit. You can't just go around killing people in a guarded area and not expect punishment. Especially in the starter city that the twins arrive in.

Holy sheit I just came up with an idea that may work. I'll tell you later, for now I'm going to take a shower.

It's a good idea at any rate, though it also makes it fairly different to most MMORPG stories where PKs are all over the place. Anyway, I need to finally get some rest, so all the best. If you end up wanting to let me know about that idea you had then I'll read it when I've woken up.

All right I'll post it soon. But yeah, there are pkers (many of which get away with it, especially outside of Milmil). Basically all laws are disregarded outside of guarded areas since they can get the murder past the guards very easily (since the area is not guarded lel) so they'd mostly fight away from a city, town, etc.
