@Trainerblue192Obviously it's dependant on how you want to do your character and you can't just start of an unstoppable bad-ass from the beginning. Many of the characters accepted have their strengths and weaknesses, you could play the roleplay via improving your characters weaknesses but not necessarily strengthening their magical abilities.
Does your character have full access to all their abilities? Then they should be overwhelmed by their magic and be easily drained when fighting. What I and I assume a few others have done, is started their character with only one of their skills unlocked, though a duration of the story they'll unlock more abilities.
You can think of unlocking abilities along the lines of something like this;
Weak Character > Intense Fighting > Skill Unlocked
Unlocked Skill(s) > Training > Strengthened Skills
