It has not been established whether there is permadeath or not, no?

(Really hoping that there is not, though...)

Rereading the OP, I realize that my idea might not be able to work in its scifi/cyberpunk apperance, that said I feel like a magician-like character could probably pull off the core idea pretty well.

Personally I'm all for permadeath (or some penalty for dying), gives the RP a feel of weight; running head first guns blazing again and again can only be so interesting. Plus actual character deaths do provide good plot elements.

Honestly, I am against permadeath as well.

@ClocktowerEchos
Considering my Character is going to be a Berserker who does just that...xP

Well, yeah. But, seeing what SAO made out of that idea compared to how it is done in Log Horizon, for example, I find the prospect of permadeath a bit... bleh. Bland, I guess.
Penalty for dying, sure, maybe.

Also... I find it hard to believe that in such a world, if, like in SAO, player killers are seemingly pretty common, people would still trust each other to not slaughter you in your sleep or something xD

Wait, the shock and awe with loud noises and bright colors? Damn, time to go make something new up.
Might do an Onion Knight from Dark Souls for shits and giggles though

No, silly.

The running in guns blazing thing. Personally, I find that sort of play style more interesting and challenging.

Wuh! I disappear for an hour and this place blows up.

I'm not too confident in our current party makeup, but I don't think we have that many DPS casters. We have Tis, who is a warrior archetype, so some parts tanky some parts damagey, we have Rael the rogue/dex tank. Gopnik the traditional tank. My character Allune was designed to be a support caster instead of a DPS caster- earth shield and stalagmite for defense, the summon for more offense/defense, and then planned on picking up more utility spells like an earth-based heal, stone armor for the party, maybe sand spray to blind enemies. We got Xander who i dont really know what he's gonna do, maybe shooty? Tengu is some life steal sneaky shadow person- survivable but not tanky and probably not too high on dps.

Thats all the characters I remember off the top of my head anyway.

I'ma mention that Tis is definitely gonna be more DPS. Her entire class build is gonna be built for pure offensive strategies and high damage dealing abilities. She's gonna hit really, really, hard probably.

Now, she's gonna have like zero armor and defense, and only a higher pool of HP to help negate that, but details details.

@McHaggis
...pay Tis enough and she'll consider it.

In regards to permadeath, I find there's pros and cons to both sides of the argument. With permadeath, our characters would be considerably more cautious about a number of things. It raises the possibility of player killing which, although SAO doesn't touch upon it a lot, would have to be met with harsh justice which would be interesting to see playing it. Y'know, gritty and shit.

Non permadeath, on the other hand, makes death a bad idea but not an irreversible one. It has some meaning in that you could be watching your friends slowly slip further and further away from reality. It's a bit more intelligent and long-lasting but it obviously wouldn't carry such an emotional punch; a la Moonlit Black Cats.

Ultimately, however, as Jabber mentioned, we're having more of a focus on Log Horizon than SAO. Plus it could be said that unlike the creator showing up in Ep1 of SAO and telling them that if they die in the game, they die in real life, the Dark Lord did not mention death at all. I reckon we're going for non-permadeath then.

Alsssooooo, if we're talking about a lack of roles, I think there definitely could be a debate raised for having 2 characters max per person.
