Some call us superhumans, some call us enhanced, some even call us freaks of nature.
Over time, the ‘politically correct’ term has become Variant -- as in, a variation of the normal human genome. We’re said to have an anomaly in our genetic code that allows us to manifest certain powers or abilities.
No explanation as to how or why or where this came from...either way, it’s a major source of conflict in our world.
While the world struggles to figure out what to do with Variants, the Variants struggle to find their place in the world.
Apparently, a normal life isn’t an option for someone who can turn into ice or has armored skin or can read minds...too much to ask, it seems.
But with every struggle, there’s a story...and this is ours.
General Info
[ New Haven ]
The most ‘unique’ city in America. Vibrant culture, breathtaking architecture, rich history, festivals all year. One of the greatest cities the country has to offer...if you don't plan on staying, that is. Visiting is great; living there is a whole different story. Poverty, crime, and corruption all come to light once the veil is lifted and the allure fades away. The rich enjoy the most opulent of lives, while the poor struggle to keep food on the table. The city's rising crime rates are overwhelming local law enforcement. It's like biting into the most delicious dessert you've ever tasted...only to discover it contained a deadly poison.
Key Districts
Ville Rouge The oldest part of town which also happens to be the primary cultural hub.
Business District/Midtown The central urban area of New Haven boasting numerous skyscrapers and several rail lines.
Vines A historical neighborhood filled with mansions on large plantations located just south of Midtown.
Uptown Another wealthy district with slightly smaller estates than Vines.
The Shanty The poor area located near Ville Rouge.
Country/Bayou The rural area on the other side of the large river that borders the city.
[ N.O.V.A. ]
The National Office for Variant Affairs, more commonly referred to as N.O.V.A., is a government agency that deals with Variants involving everything from public relations to legal issues to scientific research. The agency for the most part is quite professional, though, over the years, corruption has started to make its way through the system at various levels.
Ability Classes and Danger Levels
N.O.V.A. uses a system to classify Variants based on their specific abilities and also by the potential threat to society that those abilities pose. This does not necessarily take into account the notoriety of a Variant, but an especially aggressive or abusive Variant may have a higher danger level than normal (if he/she has been identified).
Danger Levels Green - Low (oh please...are you even a Variant?) Blue - Mild (yeah, that guy kinda bothers me a bit...) Yellow - Moderate (hey now...you be careful with that, ok? we don't want any trouble) Red - High (wait...she can do what?!...yeah, we're screwed...) Black - Extreme (that's ok...we don't need the Earth anyway, right?)
Class 1 - Enhancements These are powers that usually only affect the person using them. They come in the form of things like heightened senses, superhuman strength, accelerated healing, and even immortality. Class 1 abilities are usually of very little danger to others when they aren't being specifically abused.
Class 2 - Alteration Though Class 2 abilities are similar to Class 1 in the fact that they affect only the user, the difference lies in the nature of how they work. While Class 1 abilities are passive, Class 2 are alternatively more active. These abilities allow a person to alter their bodies, both partially and fully. Some examples would be a physical transformation, a manifestation of an elemental force, or adopting the physiology of a non-human creature. This classification isn't limited to changes in physical appearance. Altering one’s natural ability to adapt to certain situations or environments also falls into this category.
Class 3 - Mental Powers This category of abilities involves those linked with the mind. Standard psychic powers such as telepathy, telekinesis, and ESP fall into this class as well as powers based on auras, sleep, emotions, and intuition. Other examples of Class 3 abilities would be dream manipulation, astral projection, super-enhanced learning, and illusions.
Class 4 - Manipulation/Creation Though there may be a few abilities that blur the line between Class 3 and Class 4, Class 4 abilities primarily deal with the manipulation and/or creation of matter and energies outside of the body; however, the creation abilities are of a very specific and limited nature. This class quite possibly contains the widest variety of powers such as the power to manipulate the elements or organic matter, the power to control something more abstract such as color, and even limited power over space-time.
Class 5 - Almighty Powers This category is reserved for powers that many would consider to be 'godlike’. These abilities are almost -- if not completely -- impossible to control or counter and, at times, have the potential to alter reality or cause an apocalypse. Oftentimes, they can be highly extreme versions of abilities from other classes such as the creation of highly complex life forms or the ability to gain infinite knowledge. The ability to manipulate intangible concepts like probability or physics also fall under this category. Because of their catastrophic potential, the powers in this class are always considered to be of the highest danger level.
Class 6 - Multi-Powered This is a special designation for sets of powers that fall into multiple categories. This doesn't include a single power that has multiple uses.
Notoriety
One of the primary goals of N.O.V.A. is to identify and register all Variants living within the nation's borders. As one would expect, not all Variants are willing to comply with the agency's agenda, whether out of privacy or sheer rebellion. For these reasons, every Variant has a certain level of notoriety with N.O.V.A., whether officially or unofficially.
Variants who have yet to be identified by N.O.V.A. are considered Unknown.
Confirmed Variants fall into three categories: Watched, Wanted, and Missing. Those who have been identified but have not registered -- as Variants have no legal obligation to do so -- are put on a Watch list. Variants who are known to misuse their abilities and pose a threat to the well-being and quality of life of others are considered Wanted. Vigilantes operating outside of the law are also considered Wanted as oftentimes their actions can cause collateral damage to people or property. Variants on the Watch list whose whereabouts are currently unknown but who aren't as high of a priority to find as those who are Wanted are considered Missing.
Variants who register with N.O.V.A. do so under the obligation that they will gain or have already gained employment -- whether through their own means or through one of N.O.V.A.’s programs. This is to ensure that Variants who are compliant are ‘productive members of society’. While several Variants see the registration as a step toward tagging and tracking, others (usually the less fortunate) see it as a way to guarantee themselves a job in a world that has mixed opinions on the treatment of those with powers. Employed Variants must renew their registration once a year and are also subject to ‘check-ins’ with N.O.V.A., which is a large part of why many Variants choose not to register.
Manhattan McClain/Inverse -- Gravity Manipulation

Rules/Notes
- This is taking place in the year 2126 and the general vibe of the RP is more dystopian. - We are basically going to be a ragtag bunch of vigilantes trying to fight crime in the city. Not all characters have to be vigilantes (i.e. NPCs), but they should be significant. - Though there is a class for almighty powers, it does not open the door for OP characters. Please take caution if you plan on dabbling into this territory. - If your character is unknown, the class and level of their powers still apply. - Character limit is TBD. - A good bit of our discussion will happen in Discord chat. Being active in chat will make sure you don't get left behind, so it is a must. - Have fun!!!!!
Since the enhanced hearing and reflexes would be more or less a 'side effect' of what I assume is a transformation ability, it would still count as Class 2 because the transformation is the actual 'main' ability. So, yeah, that all sounds fine. :-)
Name: Jason Graves Alias: Overclock Age: 24 Gender: Male Appearance: Occupation: Part-Time retail Family: Emma Graves (Sister), Johan Graves (Father) Personality: Jason is often cold upon his first meeting. He keeps very professional and businesslike, often not exchanging many words at all. Once he begins to warm up to a person however, another side of him comes out. Jason will begin smiling and joking more, enagaging in conversation and sharing stories of his life. He doesn't have many people he would consider a friend, but those he does he would give his life for.
Enemies, on the other hand, see a completely reversed Jason. They see someone who will sit and take a beating, any punishment they can dole out while laughing in their face. Criminals know fear as Overclock begins to taunt them as he gets up and uses the force of their own blows to beat them senseless. Those who seek to do him harm see a cold, hard face with an icy stare before a booted sole darkens their vision, sometimes for the last time.
Notoriety: Watched Class/Level: Class 4, Level Yellow Powers/Abilities: ((So far, Jason only has access to the Kinetic portion of his powerset, the rest will evolve over time.))
Jason describes himself as an 'energy vampire'. He can absorb, deflect, and redirect many different types of energy, and by 'charging' his weapons with stored energy he can make his hits much harder. For example, if he were to absorb the energy of a car wreck, charge his staff with it, and hit you with the staff, it would be as if you were hit by the force of the staff driven by a car. He can store up to two different types of energy at once, although this shortens the duration he can safely store them. He can also charge objects with different types of energy as well, giving them different properties when they're released, or the energy reaches its limit. Different types of energy also grant him different 'buffs', which, while much weaker than true superhuman levels, put him at a higher tier than most normal humans.
-Kinetic: Kinetic energy is the most common type of energy Jason uses, as it's the first he discovered, and the one with the least benefit to him. This allows him to absorb the energy of a physical attack he is aware of, rendering it null, and redirecting the attack by charging his weapons with it, essentially hitting you with your own force.
-Electrical: By storing electrical energy in his body, Jason can enhance his physical speed, running a maximum of 20-30 MPH. When not burning off that energy, he is extremely hyper. Using this energy for an attack makes it a lightning attack.
-Heat: By storing energy from fire or heat from the surrounding air, Jason can enhance his physical toughness, making it more difficult to be hurt. He becomes hot to the touch while storing this energy. Using this energy for an attack manifests in a fire attack.
-Light: By storing energy specifically from sunlight, Jason can warp light around himself. He can become invisible, though this removes his ability to see. He glows slightly while storing this energy. Using this energy for attacking creates a flash of bright light.
-Sound: Aborsbing this energy has a twofold effect. In addition to allowing Jason to alter the sounds he makes, whatever object he's absorbing from, which must be making noise, is silenced. When used as an attack, it creates a loud cracking noise.
Jason has been unable to absorb biochemical energy, and is both unwilling and unable to even attempt absorbing nuclear energy.
This power also comes with an inherent weakness, the more energy Overclock stores, the more quickly it becomes unstable. Unstable energy will cause Jason immense pain, and finally reach a critical failing point, resulting in an explosive breakdown of energy wherever it's stored, to disastrous results.
Other Skills: Jason is a mediocre baseball player, and is a good violin player. Equipment: Jason carries a folding staff that fits into his pocket when he folds it down. He carries a pocket full of rubber bands.
Bio: Jason was born into a poor immigrant family from Europe, who wanted nothing more than to see their boy become a famous American baseball player (Which is, of course, the American dream). His life was dominated by the sport, from playing catch with his father in the back yard using stones when they couldn't afford a new ball, to joining a local little league team as soon as he was big enough. Jason't family had always been low on money, but his mother and father managed to scrape together everything Jason needed for the team. Unfortunately, it seemed Jason was doomed to a life of mediocre sports talent. He never really shone on the field, making a few nice plays and a good hit here or there, but not reaching the standards his parents hoped he would.
Jason's life changed for the first time at the age of 12. During one of the final baseball games of the season, he stood a bit too close to the plate in an all-planned effort to hit the ball with more force. His left hand was struck by the pitch, a fastball right to his knuckles, though Jason felt no pain. He soon forgot the incident however, until a week or two later, when his hand began to ache. Not able to afford a doctor, his parents looked at it, said it seemed fine, and wrapped it with soft cloth, to try and sooth the paid. Soon after, Jason's hand exploded in a flash of purple, the decaying energy from the baseball weeks prior finally taking its toll. The family was introduced to one of the facets of the 'American Dream'; privatized healthcare. The bills from the hospitals, all the tests done, and getting even the cheapest prosthetic they could find all but bankrupted the family. Each parents was forced to take another job just to survive, and that was when Jason's life changed again.
Late one night, walking home form work in an attempt to save money on bus fare, Jason's mother was jumped by a group of muggers. Desperately trying to defend her hard-earned money, she fought back against her attackers, who decided it was easier to simply pull a knife. Jason got the news before leaving for school the next day; his mother had been killed. This sent the boy's father into a spiraling depression, he barely ate or slept, and stopped talking to anybody at all. Jason did everything he could to help, but his father was left a broken shell of a man. Soon after, Jason swore vengeance on the criminals of his city, vowing to use his newfound powers to destroy the people who had taken both his parents from him and ruined his life.
Name: Emma Graves Alias: Angel/Demon Age: 20 Gender: Female Appearance: Occupation: Public Relations intern with Kasimir Realty Family: Jason Graves (Brother), Johan Graves (Father) Personality: Emma is a very passionate person, giving everything she does everything she has. She is dedicated to making life better for as many people as she can, and views her purpose in life to be helping others. Emma's family is very important to her, and she would do anything for those she loves.
Underneath her bubbly appearance though, lies an internal conflict. Given her father's clear preference of her brother Jason, Emma has learned to keep her opinion and feelings to herself, as some part of her believes nobody will care. This can manifest in a short temper and a desire to get her way.
Emma has an interesting relationship with conflict, hating and loving it at the same time. Her power allows her to defuse most situations before they escalate, but some primal part of her enjoys seeing verbal sparring escalate to near-physical levels, especially when it's about her. Which, given her appearance happens quite a bit.
Notoriety: Watched Class/Level: Class 2, Level Blue Powers/Abilities: 'Angel Mode'.
Flight: Using her massive wings, Emma can take to the air, granting her great speed and maneuverability.
Enhanced Physical Ability: Emma's strength, toughness, stamina, and speed are enhanced while in Angel Mode, not to technical superhuman levels, but moresoe than the average human.
Aura of Peace: A passive ability of Emma's, she has the ability to instill peaceful feelings and desires among people who are not directly opposed to her.
Combat Tactics: Emma has an innate knowledge of how to use her sword and shield while in Angel Mode, not at master level but enough to fight with.
Emma doesn't have much in the way of actual offensive abilities, most of her powers are focused on defense. Her wings mean she is practically useless in enclosed spaces as well, and fighting indoors is nearly impossible.
'Demon Mode'
This form differs from the Angel form in that it is triggered by strong negative emotions. When Emma taps into the darker feelings inside her Her Angel form darkens and corrupts, leaving her a red-skinned demon with leathery wings.
Aura of Hate: Demon is able to instill feelings of hate and fear in anyone around her, causing infighting or terror.
Hellfire: Demon can shoot fireballs from her hands that burn hotter and brighter than normal fire, as well as being harder to put out.
Claws: Demons fingers end in six-inch long, razor sharp claws that can cut through most materials softer than steel.
Graves Bypass: Demon is the only known being able to counter the abilities of the Graves family, IE she can harm Jason despite his powers making him near-invulnerable.
Other Skills: Emma has been training in different weapons in an effort to improve her combat expertise. Emma has a beautiful singing voice. Equipment: Short Sword, Buckler shield, Light armor
Bio: Emma was born a few years after Jason was, and wasn't given as much attention as her older brother. She wasn't neglected, but he was certainly the star of the show in their family. Much of her life was dominated by what Jason was doing. Things would have likely gotten better for her during her teenage years were it not for the back to back tragedies that struck her family. After Jason's accident she stayed by him in the hospital as much as she possibly could, her anger at his unintentional attention hogging being bottled away as she saw the struggles her family went through.
Emma discovered her powers at a young age, her angel wings being a source of comfort for her in her younger years. It wasn't until after her mother's death that she accidentally discovered the darker side to her powers. In an argument with her father, who had turned more and more to drinking, Emma accidentally activated her Demon form and trashed their apartment. Jason attempted to calm her down, but her razor-sharp claws cut into him, leaving him unable to get close to her. She realized what she had done later on, after calming down, and set to work trying to make things right.
Emma tries to do what she believes to be the right thing, defusing situations before they get out of hand and trying to make the best of a bad situation. She is terrified of the monster inside of her and does everything she can to keep it from coming out. The only people who know of Demon are herself, Jason, and their father.
Name: Oscar Fontaine Alias: None Age: 38 Gender: Male Appearance: Occupation: Police Officer Family: None Personality: Oscar has a no-nonsense attitude. He believes in doing the right thing above all, and demands the same of those around him. This does not always mean following the letter of the law though, only in doing what is best for everyone else.
Oscar is slow to trust, but incredibly loyal once trust is gained. He has little trust in the government of the city, but attempts to work from within to root out corruption and fix the system.
Notoriety: Unknown Class/Level: Class 1, Level Yellow Powers/Abilities: Super strength, enhanced toughness, enhanced speed, flight, superhuman reflexes. Other Skills: Oscar has impeccable aim and is skilled in hand-to-hand combat. Equipment: Stun gun, policeman's firearm, baton.
Bio: Oscar was born in New Haven and has spent his entire life there. His family has been in the city for many generations, and are an established name. His parents taught him from a young age to always respect others and do the right thing. They trained him to stand up for the weak and helpless and to act as a shield for those under fire. What they never told him were they they were Variants.
Oscar's parents died when he was 17, killed in an attempt to defend a city block from an attack by one of the newly reveal Variant supervillians. Though they were successful, they paid dearly for their efforts. Oscar was left alone in the world with only his parents legacy to comfort him. Soon after he enrolled in Police Academy, determined to put the lessons his parents taught him to good use. It was there that he discovered his own latent Variant gene, and decided it was best to keep it a secret. the world was beginning to crack down on Variants, and Oscar knew that he would be better served in hiding his gifts than being bent to the rules of those who didn't know him.
Oscar has become one of the most successful officers in the city, widely respected by the citizens and envied by the rest of the force. In any dangerous situation, Oscar has a reputation of diving ahead and pulling the best outcome form the jaws of defeat.
Girard stands at 6'8" and weighs well over 400lbs thanks to his power. He tends to wear whatever is comfortable normally whether it be short sleeves and jeans or some other combo. When he becomes Tank a dark green bomber jacket, a black shirt underneath, with grey camo pants are his preference, tough/comfortable and plenty of storage, including a large military helmet with a face cover.
Personality: Girard appears to be a rather friendly guy mostly carefree though is serious when necessary. He will talk to anyone who will listen provided he has something to say or will listen to anyone if the subject is good. He tends to be careful and relatively peaceful but he is no gentle giant and if someone starts something it won't take him long to step in and give them what they have coming while not killing them in the process. He is far more concerned with other people than himself trying to help out where he can with a smile on his face mostly because he can. He is more than willing to work with other vigilantes though his forward and aggressive style doesn't always mesh. He might have looked up to at one point but to him its people like him and others who are willing to go further that really keep the criminals on edge. The big man is extremely careful about his powers at most times acting as if he were walking on eggshells through his daily life up until he changes to Tank were he puts it to work though even then he hesitates to use a great deal of his power.
Criminals are one of the few things that Girard detests and cleaning up the city one gang at a time is his way of dealing with it. He doesn't always expect much out of them but he fully expects them to try and surprise crime fighters so he values patience for keeping him out of trouble. For him there are no restrictions on what kind of activity to stop though some warrant less force than others which he is keenly aware of. Despite his approach to the bad element serious collateral damage is something he avoids whenever possible, no need to make it harder on the people and families who live in the city like him. He intends to protect and clean up the city to make it better for him, his family, and every good hearted person left in it.
Girard is normally a happy and calm person but even he can be pushed to his limit and he tends to let loose on whoever managed to break through to him though it takes something severely bad or extremely personal to cause him to get into such a state. Pity to the person who brings out the beast because he is very unlikely to stop until he deals with them.
Notoriety: Unknown(Girard), Wanted(Tank). Class/Level: Class 1, Level Red.
Powers/Abilities: Supernaturally dense tissue resulting in a myriad of side effects many of which Girard does his best to control, suppress, or hide.
Enhanced strength and stamina- Tank's condition could be easily confused with super strength as he is usually on par with most of said individuals on the mid-to-high range scale and his stamina allows him to make the best use of it while simultaneously balancing out his body mass/weight most of the time. He honestly doesn't know the upper limit to either of these and is rarely in control of himself when they could be gauged but he does have one for certain.
Extreme physical durability and increased weight- Tank can be said to be nigh on invulnerable to most conventional weaponry and physical forces as his body is either too thick/hard to crack or disperses force so well that has next to no effect on him at most times. This more or less allows him to act as his namesake, not to mention a wrecking ball, shrugging off incredible amounts of punishment while using his strength to return the favor to his opponents. Its entirely possible to harm him by other means like electricity, poison, or mental powers to name a few. While his weight slows him down and causes him plenty of environmental problems, when he isn't being careful, it also gives him one hell of a momentum once he gets moving, one which he can end up at the mercy of.
Other Skills: Girard is very good at noting structural integrity of a building and knows where and what walls or bits can be messed with to cause different effects. Like non load-bearing walls which he usually uses if he has to make a noisy entrance or the good old main support beam if he absolutely has to bring it down quickly. His job has also given him some experience with the use and makeup of explosives of which he uses some small homemade ones occasionally when out crime-fighting.
Equipment: His getup and the occasional explosive, small or bigger depending on the need. Otherwise he has been known to improvise a weapon out of his environment.
Bio: Girard's parents met at a local diner, Morning Glory, in the city and had a few arguments before they really got talking but it was uphill from there and the two have been inseparable since. They managed to carve out a nice life by the time their first son was born and they were amazed when he was. While Girard wouldn't have fully developed powers until he was well into his teens they had an impact on his size from day one. He had a rather good life never much to complain about, his father also being quite a big guy and a noted temper with troublemakers, warding off plenty of trouble with his siblings only making it better. If his parents weren't there he was looking after them and would continue to do so through his life seeing his family as the most important thing he had. His parents actually bought the diner and it did good for a while but continually less people came when some local gang members started targeting it driving people away as well as making life harder for the family. Girard now with some years under his belt found out most of them were around his age and being the guy he was intervened once roughing a couple of them up in the process to which they stopped coming for a bit but it wouldn't last.
The leader had taken particular offense to it, his cousin having taken a beating in the intervention, came back and put several shots through the diner's front hitting a couple patrons as well as his brother also grazing his sister who was nearby. It was one of the few moments Girard couldn't recall because he rushed out after them in a rage having no intention of them getting away. He probably should have know it would be a trap but there was little to no thinking at the time in his mind when he walked into an opening in-between finding seven vengeful gangers though only the leader had a gun. Girard admits he remembers very little of what happened but it ended very badly for the seven who tried with everything they had to bring him down only to find they couldn't because he was shrugging off pipes, chains, hell even the leader's pistol barely left a mark on him with repeated shots. Most of the aggressors were on death's door before some semblance of control came back to the big man which horrified him. After he reined himself in he got out of there to go and check on his family who were glad to see him alive after his pursuit. It was part of the reason he would later become Tank but for some years it calmed down and law enforcement never caught on to what Girard did because of a lack of witnesses and the silence from the now imprisoned gangers who either were planning an eventual comeback or scared shitless by the semi some of them thought they got hit by and had no want to go anywhere near him again.
His brother and sister recovered, his brother lost some range of motion in his left arm but he lived, but thing got back to being more normal if not more close between the family. It had occurred more than ever that Girard was something special and they told him that it was his choice how to handle his 'gift'. Of course he did his best to conceal if not so much hide it for a time not sure what to do but he would eventually seeing more and worse crimes as he got older. He couldn't let the horror that happened to his family just go on or show up else where especially not after one of his best friends nearly got mugged among other continued attempts on people he cared about or around him. Since then he has done his best to keep a good balance between being him and being Tank who is far less forgiving than him and has put more than a little fear into the cities criminal population. His efforts haven't been appreciated by all, particularly the government who would much rather have their own doing what he does, but he won't stop on that account. He hopes at one point or another that some of the other vigilantes and like minded variants might get together to tackle some of the bigger problems which would be the highlight of his day.
Name: Donovan McMillian. Alias: Abomination is the one he hears the most. Age: 26. Gender: Male. Appearance:
Don stands at about 6ft and looks to be on the thin side only weighing in at about 160lbs counting only his own weight. His eyes faintly glow a pale green in low light as well as his veins on close inspection and he is quite pale from his time spent underground. There are some rather large pore like holes in his lower back which he prefers not to talk about and likely won't when pressed.
Occupation: None, unless you consider stealing or scavenging a job. Family: His worms are the closest thing after he was disowned.
Personality: Donovan tends to be a very cold and detached person to strangers though he warms up enough to ease victims of the criminals he deals with. Trust is not a well used part of his vocabulary nor is charity so the guy tends to do everything himself and has no qualms if it keeps him breathing for another day provided it doesn't cause too much trouble for other people but he doesn't believe for a second anyone would stick a neck out and do the same for him. He is very much the cynic and sarcastic to boot when he actually decides to involve himself with other people which has been more common recently but not something he entirely enjoys, it being far simpler to stay out of sight and mind.
However, if there is one thing he particularly hates it would be NOVA's pet attack dogs who have been sent to hunt people like him down several times before. To him the fact that Variants could allow themselves to be used like they are, not to mention the fact they don't seem opposed to it frustrates Don to no end. As for the rest of the powered community he tends to stay on neutral terms if possible though he has squared off with a few in the past. His overall tendency to stay out of the way and well hidden helps with this as far as hes concerned, not to mention when the visitors are looking for trouble. He has a soft spot for other Varients in his position, most of whom he figures are in even worse straits than him, and has been known to give them a place to rest in one of the safe spots he knows of to make things a bit easier.
Notoriety: Wanted. Class/Level: Class 6, Level Red.
Powers/Abilities: Donovan is host to and controls about one hundred worm creatures which are quite ravenous, not to mention with a wide variety of poisons, toxins, and venom flowing through them. It has caused some large scale changes to his body to compensate though some are his own doing. Needless to say his symbiotes are excellent at digging but their jaws are filled to the brim with teeth capable of ripping through most animals, including humans, with ease though most are fairly small requiring them to mass to cause extensive damage. There are few that measure more than foot and a half long with the largest and oldest being three feet long, Don named him Anthrax as a bit of a joke and it stuck, while being shockingly intelligent as they seem to grow older due to connection with Donovan.
Enhanced metabolism and immune system- Don has been "blessed" with an appetite that could probably hold over three to four people give or take and his body is capable of breaking down said food/liquids extremely fast. In fact it happens to quickly and efficiently most harmful substances have no time to cause damage before they are digested, those that do however find a gauntlet of an immune system backing it up attacking all harmful invaders immediately or assimilating them to prevent further problems from that specific organism/material. This effectively allows him to heal faster as well since his body runs so much quicker than an average person but he is only marginally tougher to injure than one. His symbiosis with the worms gave another perk in the form of total immunity to most poisons, toxins and venom though the only reason he is vulnerable to some is that his body hasn't been exposed to it yet.
Rapid evolution and adaption- This facet is often what allows him to survive in the elements. His body tends to instinctively adjust to the surrounding temperature and environment though it is usually internal like thickening of tissue in the winter for insulation. Those changes tend to be quite small requiring little energy expenditure but something like growth of regenerating chitin spines on an arm or storage glands, which Don finds extremely useful, takes much more effort and energy. The largest limitation of this particular point is how much available food there is to allow for the changes which is the major reason Donovan hasn't done more potent ones.
Hive mind telepathy and control of the worms- Part of the symbiosis Don has with the worms is due to telepathy between him and all of them at once which at first confused him trying to sort which thought were his own among the wave of information. Over time he has found it allows him precision control of individuals and even lets him see what they see allowing him to know what better is going on around him. The most interesting side effect so far with this is his ability to send short messages to other people around him with it, though it has to be a simple sentence or it puts a lot of strain on his mind where his symbiotes don't. His control of the worms allows him to determine which changes and adaptations they do or don't get drawing from the same energy pool for himself. Between this and his adaptations Donovan has figured out how to develop a tremor sense for himself allowing him to feel vibrations around him and know the where and what of objects or people around him. A downside is if he decides to focus specifically on it his normal vision tends to get screwy for a bit afterwards.
Other Skills: If there is one man who knows the city's underground like the back of his hand, Don is definitely it, because he can get you damn near anywhere in the city via the various tunnels/passages underneath the streets. He is a good ear to the ground being able to pass for some random homeless guy or listening from below the streets and buildings where he tends to pick up useful information. Is quite good at enacting and detecting ambushes due to his powers but also years of practice using the very same tactic.
Equipment: None.
Bio: Donovan was born an only child to his parents and while it doesn't seem like it now his life wasn't bad at that time. They hadn't exactly been ready for him when he was born and ended up sacrificing a lot to keep him cared for but in that time they wouldn't have done it any other way. He made it easy for them too being cheerful and not needing much to keep entertained, just them being around usually. It was a good thing too since for awhile there wasn't much to go around and went hungry a couple of times if either parent's work dried up. As time went on the situation improved when the father got a government job of interviewing Variants who came in and it paid fairly well. It took up a fair bit of time away from his family but he was known as a compassionate but impartial man in most cases putting more stock in the person than the power which prevented some bad eggs from getting farther up the chain as well as letting some through who otherwise wouldn't have passed because he saw the good in them. It wasn't a popular position among his coworkers but he had less of an issue with powered people then most of them but didn't prevent him from doing his job well.
Don became a more competitive boy as he got older finding sports to his liking with the atmosphere but also science finding it equally interesting because he enjoyed how much there was to wrap his head around. He was particularly fond of running and swimming which both parents encouraged because he seemed to really enjoy it, not to mention it kept him healthy which was a concern as money for a doctor was short at the best of times. His mother ended up as a police officer during this time as more Variants were starting to pop up in the same area which wasn't too much of an issue at first but became worst as time went on. Unknown to the family his own powers were slowly beginning to creep out starting with notably his appetite getting larger which since he was still growing wasn't so surprising but the rate which it kept going was hinting at something more. Both parents tried to figure out if it was medical or not first without resorting to a doctor but he seemed perfectly healthy just hungrier than usual. There wasn't much spare time to check in on it as they're jobs were requiring more time as crime rates went up and over time his mother became more and more bitter with the powered population seeing casualties on the force as well as civilians in the face of the higher classed Variants. This had also begun effecting the father who was having more trouble distinguishing who could be trusted or not among the applicants not to mention how upset it had been making his wife colored his perception.
Donovan's worms had started appearing around the house some time later often trying to get access to food or just moving about, a couple had even killed a mouse in the kitchen while his father was home causing him to crush and kill most of them. This had actually caused his son some pain as every time the worms were threatened they ran back to him or his room and he had come to like them despite all the confusion they caused more or less because they were a part of him. He was still their son but eventually neither parent wanted anything to do with him and they tried to turn him in to NOVA to get rid of him. Needless to say Don felt extremely betrayed which led him to outright refuse to go along with that decision to which they tried to force him. Anthrax though not nearly the size he currently is retaliated alongside some of the more aggressive worms and gave their host enough time to get out before what was left of them followed suit. That was ten years earlier and Donovan has stopped acknowledging them as anything since almost never using his last name.
The boy then and man now have worked to survive living with no home or anyone to rely on but themselves which got easier as time passed. However, as much as Don sometimes wants to he cannot deny the fact he hates seeing other people get hurt so he helps where he can attacking and stealing from local criminals benefiting himself in the process. There are other like him wandering the tunnels or streets, more now than then, which makes him feel less alone in a way as he knows of a few small groups doing much what he does barring the helping normals part as the rest of them don't much care for them anymore. Donovan has done his best to help out when it suited him as well as dodge the police/government workers hunting for people like him and has seen other Variants living more normal lives get their hands dirty to help clean up the streets which he respects but has yet to contact or work with any of them directly. Though he is more and more considering the idea recently but it would still take some convincing if they even bother to ask.
Quote:"One should never fear the dark. Just enjoy the light you have left."
Alias: Raven tale Age: 22 Gender: female Notoriety: Missing Level: yellow Family: Father: Rick Lorell, Mother: Sarah Lorell Occupation: Horse trainer and retired Olympic rider.
Appearance:
Aurora is seen to be a beauty. With a lean build and fair skin standing in at around 5,2. Her eyes are what really set her apart besides the snowy form. Red and clouded as though in a veil of mist she almost always keeps them closed due to being bullied as a child. Many saying they are unnerving to look at.
Method of Operation: No one knows that its truly her. Those that have gained her help have only seen the creatures that she calls forth. Usually beasts from mythology that have few features. If shes forced to be seen she stays silent, trying to keep her age and gender a secret. If anyone found out who she was, the world would find out everything about her in minutes. Instead she uses her tour as a way to keep her location foggy. Being a world and Olympic rider, she has been to all corners of the world. Each one earning a job or two from her. Her method of transportation is a horse she had conjured herself, what she sees as the only link one could give her. Still she reminds herself that she should never get involved with things too big, but the chance to use her abilities has always been too tempting.
Superpower: Aurora has the ability to conjure beasts from stories she has read or been told. Using a leather bound journal as a catalyst to recite the right lines to call forth her companions. She found that the larger impact a story holds to her, the easier it is to call her creatures. Though strange enough she has found that it is more difficult to create that which is already in this world. Being able to make a wraith she has massive difficult in creating a bird. Many would think this ability is limitless. Sadly Aurora must read or hear the tale in which her conjure is being made from. Even than she can't always make them unless it had a impact on her in some way. Because of this she has a habit of asking others for stories. Any kind hoping that she could advance her abilities further. Her biggest weakness is that this only works when she has a sound mind and when the book is open. Growing up taming thousand pound animals has made her difficult to frighten. But if she falls pray to fear, the companions she had called would turn on her. If her book is closed her train of thought would break, causing the creatures to disperse and leave her side.
Skills: an amazing horse back rider, her hearing is better than most. Memory is above average. Shes been told that her voice is rather calming due to her nature. Shes also had a good chance of catching a lie so long as it's spoken.
Equipment: Book of tales.
Every story is written in Braille. Because of this she keeps it hidden from view and no one has yet to look through it's pages. If someone found out what was inside than the trail would be short in finding out that Aurora is the owner.
Personality: Aurora is a seeker of knowledge. Someone who needs to know things small and large. Heavy and light. This was due to the fact that she was born blind, growing up with being sheltered and lead around she found herself growing tired of the treatment quickly. Even though she would have a pilot smile when someone offers to take her hand or tell her where something is, she would find herself loathing on the inside. Wanting to be as independent as she can be. Pushing herself to be better at what she dose to prove to those around her that she dose not need her eyes in order to live her life. She thinks that many who help her do it not for herself, but so they could feel better. Thinking that they would be a hero for a small moment, she can not stand the thought of being a tool used in someone's self need to feel important. And thus it has only added to her independence.
Yet even with the quite demands of independence, Aurora is a calming presence. Soft spoken shes not one to raise her voice. When it comes to her friends, she is usually the one to end a fight with words alone. Comforting others when they are in need not using sayings of encouragement, but sitting at their side in silence. She had an interesting habit though. When in good company she tends to speak in riddles, thinking that it's due to the stories she obsesses over, she tries her best to keep it under wraps. Even so, those who she calls friends will tell her she slipped back into her odd way of speaking. Her greatest fear is being in absolute silence, she also tends to tap her finger on her cane. Sound is her greatest asset and without it she turns into a shell of her usual self. Fumbling over words and sometimes not able to use her powers safely.
Biography: Aurora was born into the business of horses. Her father a trick rider and her mother a cross country racer, the two were a power house in the equestrian world. Before she was even born they were getting her ready with what style and what horse she would ride, only for their dreams to be crushed when they saw her for the first time. A tiny albino who's retinas never even developed leaving her blind.
Yet that did not stop the girl from living up to her family's potential. She became connected with the animals that her family made a living from. Every fall she went through, she would stand from, no injury would ever scare her away. The feeling of power a horse would give was too great to leave. Where in any other situation she would be led around and treated like a child. In the arena she was expected to handle things herself and for once she herself could be the leader. At age six she was competing in not only trick riding, but cross country and dressage. Having a love for the stories that her mother would read her. Aurora began to print Braille in her own journal, often reading them out loud to her horse. After all, he was the only one that could deal with a 13 year old speaking for hours at a time. Sleeping in the stalls with her books clutched in hand the journal only grew thicker, and heavier. Till eventually the words she recited caused the animal to spook. Thrashing in the box and causing her to scramble out, screams of rage and fear ringing through the stable. Before she knew it her parents were at her side, asking her what was wrong yet whatever had caused the damage was gone. Again and again it had happened, each time with her reading. Its taken her two full months to find out that the cause of her horse’s spooking was the conjuration of creatures from her own words. Her own abilities.
Another idea that she could gain independence she began to work. Conducting experiments to figure out the rights and wrongs of her abilities. Its taken her years to find things out on her own. By the time she was 17 she was a competitor in the Olympics. Finally a chance where she was away from those who thought she needed them. All she needed was her book and her cane. Once walking through the stable halls at night. Checking her companion to make sure their first run in the Olympics would be fine. Yet as she opened the door she found something was wrong. Her stallion named Beauty in a Shadow, was gone.
Her first thought was to contact the security to find him. Fear gripping her mind she could still remember the sweat that ran down her palms as she gripped her cane. Yet when she clicked it on the stone ground she made up her mind. Her book in hand she ran her finger across the pages. "With eyes made for night, and fire as fierce as a devil's light. He tracked down hunters of his land. And made them swear he could never stand." The sound of light feet pattering next to her she found a smile on her lips when the sound of a ragged fox was found at her side. To her eyes there was blank. Yet to anyone who saw it was a fox with two tails, told in Japanese lore to be the devil in a different skin, with eyes of lit green and a scroll strapped to it's back. "Find Beauty." It was all she said, and it was all she needed to. That night she took matters into her own hands as the fox lead her through the halls. Away from the stable and out to the parking lot to hear the half drugged screams of her stallion.
That night something snapped, she no longer used her abilities to gain a smile, as she called forth a crimson wraith from the tale "a wife in the bog." The gut wrenching shrieks and screams rang true to her ears. the creature she chosen playing on their fear, having them see a different story as it led them away, leaving her stallion. Yet her story, while seeming to end at a good note. Her stallion back in safety and ready to ride again. The next morning she found herself plastered in headlines, she had been accused of being a variant right before she road into the arena. By the very humans who tried to steal her companion.
She left after that, the heart warming tale of Aurora Lorell that was supposed to end in happiness was forever marred with slander. She left her home that same week, taking her savings and her reputation to find a place that would somehow accept her. It was a man named Damion who became her salvation. He had property for horses and knew nothing of them, or cared for them. She had passion and a wish for a new place to stay. Fallen from grace, Aurora now runs Beauty ranch. She keeps her head down and work professional, training horses that seem untouchable. Yet even with this new start that she still embraces at age 24, she finds herself still heart broken over the family that she left behind. Wanting nothing more than to be thought of as human again. A wish so great that she refuses to ever show her ability to anyone again. That is unless she has her mask, some things you just can't give up.
Theme outside of battle: battle theme:
Extra:
A friesian stallion who she named Loki as a barn name he was registered as Beauty in Shadow. He's the only living creature who knows Aurora has abilities.
Here's a thing. Tell me if shit is op or too grimdark or transhuman or edgy, I have a weakness for that. Reposting from a smurf account.
Name: MOSHE BIN JEOCHIM Alias: UBER Age: 16 Gender: MALE
Ideology: Unaligned - He wants to first wait and see how things shall unfold without making a decision. He shall hold onto his allegiance for as long as it is possible and decide on it only if he is backed up against a wall or sees it resonate with his being, and this strongly depends on influence of people he trusts.
Occupation: Most of the time, nothing. When he really requires money, Uber sells his tissues and fluids to research organizations or becomes subject to research himself for a compensation.
APPEARANCE
Height: 190 CM
Length: 307(W/Tail) CM
Weight: 550 KG, APPROX.
Hair Color: N/A
Eye Color: Amber
Ethnicity: N/A.
Physical Appearance: A hexapodal monstrosity looking equal parts like a scorpion, lion, very angry kraken and a granite statue, Uber is beastly in his countenance and visage. Six mighty paws ending in vicious retractable claws uphold a sizeable trunk bristling with spikes, quills, armour-plates and eyes and vestigial tentacles bursting through small chinks in the chitinous armour and rock-hard skin, rear end of it transitioning into a thick tail with a vicious stinger whilst the front seamlessly fuses into a neckless, heavily armoured head armed with a slightly protruding beak-like mouth full of hook-teeth and split tongues seeping acidic saliva. From the front of his body, just beneath the massive head, grow two long, spindly but powerful multi-jointed and vaguely human-like hands with six digits each and two opposed thumbs.
Preferred Attire: Nothing.
PERSONALITY
Outward personality: Uber is calm, friendly and overall maybe at times a bit too condescending to others, seeing as he likes to flaunt his superiority a bit. He is competitive, energetic and also often starved for attention due to the nature of his powers and as such clings tightly and carefully to all acquaintances he makes in order not to lose touch with them or destroy his friendships. However upon deciding to resort to hostilities, his bestial side shows - he relishes in his own superiority and finds perverse pleasure in inflicting damage and suffering without any retaliation. This both extremely horrifies and exhilarates him - and he is conflicted on which emotion is stronger.
Innate Traits: Competitive, Enduring, Confidant, Slow To Decide On Important Matters, Reliable(Once Befriended), Sadistic(Subconsciously).
Fears/Weakness: Being introduced to his family once again would probably inflict great suffering on Uber. He also quietly fears to one day find something that can truly kill him. Additionally, Uber likes to believe the niceness of people, making him quite easy to manipulate through attention and displays of affection.
Hobbies/Interests: Reading, Modern Music, Amateur Biological Research And Experimentation, Cheesy Comedies, Hurting Himself In New Imaginative Ways, Seeking Unscrupulous Romantic Interests
SUPERPOWERS
Class: 2, not quite sure of the colour.
Notoriety: Watched - Uber does his part. He is ready to assist with hunting the rogues, commits to the research of Variants and rarely starts trouble. However, ultimately he holds no loyalty to the organisation as a whole and is only invested due to the ease of survival that registration provides. This fact is not a secret.
Power: Adaptive Regeneration - Whatever doesn't kill Better, makes him harder, better, faster and stronger. He posesses an absolutely horrifying regenerative capabilities that knit even the most horrible wounds in matter of seconds at best and days at worst - but this is not the best thing about his ability. The true blessing, and at the same time curse is the fact, that his organism does not merely regenerate to the default form, but instead changes his body to be more resistant to the received damage in future, more able to avoid or overcome it, often in very strange ways - basically, after regenerating from a bad enough wound multiple times, he eventually becomes nigh-immune to whatever made him regenerate in the first place. He can be affected by mind-warping powers of ESPers, but will grow more and more resistant to them as time goes. Burns give his hide rubber-like and heat-resistant qualities, bullets cause his body to develop redundant organs, his meat and bone to become denser and to be provided with protection in form of a biological sort of combat armour and improve his reflexes in order to notice the incoming fire and react in time. Exposure to blinding light and long periods of nocturnal activity eventually made him develop a natural octopus-like cloaking system and his eyes to see in the dark and quickly recover after being disabled - and in addition, these eyes grow all over the body for that extremely useful 360-degree all-around awareness. After having to survive in the wilderness a long time his digestive system and metabolism changed to safely consume all organic matter, breaking it down to a swallowable state through extremely powerful acidic saliva - you get the general gist of it.
Side Effects(They don't outweigh the usefulness): One: Uber is HORRIBLY, GODAWFULLY, UNNATURALLY UGLY. He lost his human form a long, long time ago, and only gets more monstrous as the time passes. This puts most people off really quick and really hard. Uber himself too, suffers from bouts of self-consciousness at times. Two: His gigantic form requires LOTS of sustenance. A district he inhabits quickly finds its population of stray and even domestic animals dwindling and their garbage dumps unnaturally clean of all organic waste. He could probably adapt to it if he starved himself to near-death, but Uber doesn't want to check that one at all - hunger TORMENTS him. Three: He sometimes gets... feral urges. Direct, harsh and evil mockery or disrespect might cause him to involuntarily frenzy and assert his dominance by spitting a glob of flesh-melting acid at the offender or such. His spine and large nerve clusters of the vegetative nervous system grew thick and powerful to compensate for the main brain in case it gets destroyed or damaged and as such at times he reacts faster than he can think - swiping his deadly tail at something that startles him by somehow sneaking up from behind or waking him from sleep, even if it is actually an ally.
BACKGROUND
History: Writing a big and well, properly written thing in a pad rn, here's a short version: he was a good studious little boy from a jewish-american family who once went out camping with his parents and friends. Guy went for a walk, got lost in the woods, stumbled on a bear and after running away from it for several hours got mauled by it horribly and for a very long time - the animal was rabid and unusually cruel, maybe affected by some Variant influence or just plain vicious. As he was torn by the bear and living through the horrible pain that JUST DIDN'T STOP his grip on reality loosened and his latent power awakened. Then the pain continued for several another hour during which Moshe just COULD NOT DIE, but eventually the bear did took him for dead and left him in the middle of nowhere with one arm and leg missing, other two broken, face torn off and ribcage crushed. Then he somehow found in himself power to drag himself with his fractured arm, finding horrible pain to be energizing and sort of just... just crawled away to try and get out of the forest, all while noting with some strangely dull interest how his stumps and wounds blacken, crust over and grow into... something - like it wasn't happening to him and he just viewed that from the side. Long story short, Mr. Jeochim never found his son - but the rangers spoke about sighting horribly mutilated forest beasts and an even more horrible-looking animal of unknown species darting between the trees. Moshe was kinda traumatized by the experience. A lot, really. He couldn't even THINK about what his parents would say or think if he returned to him the way he was now - but he thought long and hard about how they will probably stop loving him and will hate him instead. Tortured by these thoughts, he was hiding for a long, long while, ever-morphing and growing ever more troubled mentally. After some time and some self-analysis he sort of snapped a little bit and decided to embrace his condition instead of just sulking about how sad and miserable he is and hiding away from the world in forests. Thus, he was reborn as Uber - a laughably obvious name, but nevertheless a fitting one. He removed himself from solitude and attempted to enter the civilized world as a completely new person, and make something of the new life and new chances he is given. He now actively SEEKS harm and danger and pain because they improve him and attempts to enjoy all the benefits his new existence provides whilst trying to forget and push away all unwanted or sad thoughts and memories.
@Demous - Awesome! Excited to see what you come up with!
@CloseEnough - Needs notoriety, class/level and she'll be good! (Also...do eet!)
@Keksalot - If I'm being honest (and I always try to be), this character confuses me. I'm not quite sure I understand how this little boy turned into a 6 ft tall, 10 ft long, half-ton monstrosity, and I'm kind of wondering where he fits in this setting. It's not like a rejection or anything, I just need some clarification. As far as the powers go, the immunity to psychic powers and the 360 awareness might be a bit much.
@malmshodes - Yep, just go ahead and throw a CS up and I'll let you know if it's approved.
@MeowGoesKat - Because there are so many types of powers allowed (as I'm trying not to be too restrictive unless it's needed), it's kind of tough to pin down exactly what's OP without actually seeing it. It's more of a case by case basis. Just test the waters and see...you'll know if you might be going overboard.
Seems like 'Missing' would be a subcategory of 'Watched' since it looks like she's been exposed as a Variant but her whereabouts are unknown. So, yes, 'Missing' could work. As a matter of fact, I'm gonna officially add it. (Also...I would put her powers at yellow level. ;-) )
@Artifex Oh, a little boy turned into this monstrosity because his power of "adaptive regeneration" is always-on and he pretty much abused it for several years by constantly damaging and mutilating himself in order to grow stronger - and because the adaptations get more and more extreme the more harm is inflicted.
As to where he fits in - well, I was thinking to explore the classic trashy transhumanism problems, powers separating Variants from normal people, changing them into something greater yet something less than human if they cannot control them, both mentally and in Uber's case physically.
@Keksalot - Mmkay! He will definitely be an interesting character for sure...but yeah, I think he might need those few adjustments I mentioned, so that he's not stepping into OP territory. Also, I think he would be red level just based on how he looks and the fact that he spits acid.
@MeowGoesKat - Invisibility is completely fine. :D
@CloseEnough - You never know...that day might come... :P
On a side note to everyone: if your characters get approved, you can go ahead and move them over to the character section.
Occupation: Music Artist Family: John Green (father) Fiona Green (Mother)

Her music taking a divers style that fits her road to life she's been known to be a spokesperson for Variants, even though she's 100% normal. Her contracts ask her time and time again to stop standing by Variants because it hurts her views but the woman is as stubborn as a ocean rock. Though at first she may seem intimidating, she'll be quick to give you a kind word when she sees you deserve it.
Notoriety: none Class/Level: none Powers/Abilities: It's rumoured that she is a Variant due to her wide range of music.
Other Skills: Song writer, musician, dancer, okay at drawing.
Equipment: she is almost never seen without some kind of instrument case.
Bio: Kaite was born in a normal family, as a child she was put into Equestrian 4H and made a very interesting friend. A little blind girl by the name of Aurora Lorell. Every competition they every went against each other in though, has caused Aurora to always leave Kaite in the dust. Annoyed, frustrated and even a little jealous, Kaite found herself putting a strain on their friendship, she found that music calmed her down a bit. Yet it was pushed even further when one day as she was walking down the street with her mother, the red head saw a public piano, sitting down at that bench for the first time, having her fingers gracing the keys woke something new in that girl. With some encouragement from Aurora, Kaite left 4H and went to music full time. Every emotion she ever felt was turned to a song. Every object ever brought into her hand had turned into grand and shocking music. A young musician and song writer she caught the eye of multiple companies and her career launched in a storm while Aurora was riding in the Olympics. No matter how big the two got though, they stayed friends. Yet the same day Kit Kat released her new album, she found out her best friend was all over the news. Swarming the story of how she was accused of being a Variant. Her best friend since childhood having the ability to cause nightmares, at least that's what a few thugs said. And like that, out of no where, she was gone. Kit was alone and she never saw her her friend since.
That caused a monster to show up. Her songs became stronger, angrier, powerful. She went to rallies, riots, she became a warrior in the music industry. Working with Variants in her songs, her videos, her shows. Defending any story of people being slandered because of the abilities they were born with. It was a bold move, but it caused her to become a feared face in New Haven's entertainment industry.
