Personal Information
Personality::
Something of a loner, Joshua prefers to keep to himself go about his business without the interference of others. This is sometimes helped by his blunt and honest nature, causing him to speak his mind in almost any situation that doesn't require discretion.. When he does have a conversation with someone, he tends to be easy going and able to joke easily when relaxed but serious, to the point, and sometimes outright scathing in serious situations. He does have an air of mystery about him, as he refuses to talk about his past, especially this childhood, with only the brand on the back of his right hand serving as any sort of hint.
Joshua's loyalty to his guilds and those he works with is rather high. He values their safety over his own and is willing to risk serious injury to make sure they are safe from harm. This mentality also extends to innocent bystanders, as he sees no reason for them to come to harm for something they are not a part of. This behavior borders on suicidal, as Joshua seems to have no concern for his own safety when protecting others from harm.
When it comes to life, Joshua seems to hold it in high regard, especially human life. He has never taken a single life on any of his jobs, even when under extreme stress. To him, killing is an absolute extreme last resort, that should only be used if all other options have been exhausted. The only other scenario he would consider murder an option is if it involved someone he was very close to was in danger, at which point, he has no interest in holding back.
History::
Joshua was born in the far north, a land of ice and cold where many rely on strength of arm to get by. The son of a local chieftain, Joshua received training on how to use a sword almost from the moment he could walk. His instructors included his father and his older twin siblings Tyr and Sol Jormungrand. Joshua quickly proved his talent in the art of combat, quickly picking up and mastering the style of his brethren.
When Joshua was seven, he took part in a tournament that was village tradition, pitting children from the village against each other in mock battles using a wooden replica of the weapon of their choice. Joshua had been looking forward to this event and expected to win rather easily thanks to his training and natural talent. Things went exactly that way until the final round, when he went against his best friend and primary sparring partner in the village. Still believing the win would come easily to him, Joshua was both shocked in frustrated when his friend put up a better fight then he was expecting. The match lasted a solid hour before Joshua's temper finally broke and, without knowing how, he summoned a real sword to his hand and struck down his friend in a fit of rage.
It did not take long for Joshua to be apprehended by the spectators and he was quickly thrown in a cell. Joshua himself didn't resist, as the shock of what he just did set in. Within the hour, he was brought before the village and sentenced with exile for murder and the ability to use magic, which was considered a bad omen among his people and worthy of exile alone. After having a murder's brand put on the back of his right hand and given only enough supplies to last a day or two before being pushed into the wild to fend for himself.
Resigned to what was essentially a death sentence, Joshua set out and would've met his end had it not been for a stroke of luck. A week into his exile, the young boy was found by a traveling caravan of merchants, starving and on the verge of being frozen to death. Despite not knowing a thing about the boy other then his crime of murder due to the brand on the back of his hand, the merchants took him in and nursed the boy back to health. Knowing they couldn't leave the boy in the frozen wilds, they decided to take him with them to their next stop. During their time together, Joshua slowly became friends with the merchants, quickly picking up on anything they had to teach him, especially the language of the land they were heading to. While they traveled, Joshua also tried to continue his sword training, only to find himself unable to do so, having flashbacks to the moment he had killed his friend and was unable to even hold a training sword as a result. The brand on his sword hand only made the matter worse, being just another reminder of the mistake that had cost him everything.
When the caravan eventually arrived at their destination, Joshua said his good-byes, knowing they didn't plan on taking him any further and headed out after taking a few meager supplies. Surviving in this land was much easier due to the kinder, more temperate climate and Joshua found living in the wild to be a rather peaceful way pass the days. He enjoyed being surrounded by nothing but wild plants and animals and while the dangers involved where many, he persevered and managed to get along with little effort.
After several months of wilderness trekking, Joshua came across a town and, curious of what it might have, he headed for it. When he arrived, he saw everyone gathered in the middle of town, cheering and celebrating for some event he could not see past the crowd. Moving through them, he came across a sight he hadn't expected to see in the form of a fighting tournament. Drawn in by the sight before him, Joshua watched as the participants fought each other in either unarmed or armed combat. The contestants that fascinated him the most were the swordsmen, who fought in a way that was so different from how he was taught. The whole day flew by before he realized it and Joshua, wanting to learn these new sword styles, decided to track down a master to teach him.
The next day, Joshua headed back into town and began asking around about the various styles he had seen during that day. He learned most of the fighters had been from other villages and had already left. There was one school in the village so, with no other option, Joshua headed over and paid the school a visit. He arrived in time for the morning classes and was allowed to watch and was even given a chance to spar one of the students. Joshua, eager for a challenge, accepted without taking into account his current condition. Before the match even began, just holding the practice sword brought the memories to the forefront and he found himself on the ground within seconds after the match began. Infuriated, Joshua tried to fight the student several more times but each attempt resulted in the same result of Joshua being unable to even move as his memories froze him in place.
Eventually, Joshua gave up and went back to just watching and observing for the day before returning to the wilds at night. The next week became a routine of Joshua heading down to the village to observe the classes while also trying, and failing, the beat the students in sparring matches. Eventually, on the seventh day, the Master of the dojo had Joshua stay behind while the other students left to talk to the young boy in private. The conversation lasted a while, with the Master asking about Joshua's past and his reasons for wanting to learn the way of the sword. While Joshua initially refused to talk about either of these things, he eventually gave in and admitted his past and his crime, expecting the Master to push him away as his clan had. To his surprise, the Master instead offered the take Joshua in as a student, seeing past what had happened to see it as the accident it was. He then surprised Joshua by using the same kind of magic Joshua had and explaining that it was called Requip and the concept behind the magic. He also understood Joshua's inability to wield a sword and told the boy he would help him overcome his trauma and train him on how to wield the blade without killing. Eager to gain back the ability to do the one thing he had left from his home land, Joshua agreed.
The next decade flew by for Joshua as he focused almost entirely on his training. To help with this, he moved into the dojo and helped maintain it, using even the most menial tasks as a method of training. While it still took time for time for his to be able to wield a sword without freezing in place, his teacher pushed him and Joshua was eventually able to fight normally with a wooden sword within his first year. By his third year he was able to wield a regular sword for training and by his sixth, use one for actual combat. During these years, Joshua learned not only from his Master's dojo but other dojos as well, picking up techniques at an almost frightening pace and applying them to make his own sword style, putting a heavy emphasis on speed in reflexes, which he honed to the point that some called them supernatural. To compliment this emphasis further, he focused primarily on his own dojo's form of swordsmanship, Iaido. Joshua also practiced his magic, coming to view it as an extension of himself rather then the curse he had come to believe it to be after he had killed his friend with it. Through consistent practice, he was able to dismiss and summon blades as quickly as he could draw a blade from it's sheathe, allowing him to dismiss a sword only to summon a new one and attack in one smooth motion.
As time passed, Joshua slowly grew tired of training. Wanting to atone for this mistake from over a decade ago, he wanted to go out and do something in the world that would allow him to help and protect others. To this end, he began researching and eventually found out about the Mage Guilds in the western countries. After further research, he came to the conclusion that these Guilds would be the best fir for him and approached his Master with his plans. To his surprise, his Master gave his consent, saying he had always known Joshua would set out on his own. As a parting gift, his Master gave Joshua four swords to take with him in order to protect himself and to better be called a 'mage'. Armed with both weapons and conviction, Joshua set off for the lands in the west.
Joshua arrived in Fiore a year ago and, after a bit of searching, ended up joining the Golem's Hand guild, as their beliefs lined up with his the most out of the guilds he visited. He quickly established himself as a driven individual but also a bit of a loner and became well known for his non-lethal approach for jobs that involved fighting other humans, we well as his skill with his blades. These days, he's looking forward to the Grand Magic games, hoping to compete and help his guild prove their dominance over Harpy's Wing.
