Well Im sort of they guy that is sort of over the newbe stage (as some call it) into the intermediate stage that where you dont have to have characters to back up characters as often but still needs some help on keeping them alive throughout most of the campain. klingeltonemp3.info
If you have any tips or a book there has what a gamer should and shouldnt do tell me so I wont have to make new characters too often.

It's really a matter of predicting circumstance and using "common sense" in the context of your character; have him think ahead to his own survival before rushing into decisions.

I suppose I'd need more of a context to say anything with more detail.

I'm in agreement with @ArenaSnow, particularly in the sense that we need more context (not that they're wrong about the other stuff -- just that sometimes rushing ahead might be appropriate behaviour for the characters and - generally speaking - role-playing a character against their personality for the sake of success or survival is 'power gaming' and generally bad writing).

Are you talking about a Tabletop campaign that involves dice, or a more writing-orientated role-play? The sort of tips and tricks that could be detailed to you will change drastically depending on the type of role-play you're taking part in, and I'm not only talking about the example I just gave. If you'd like advice, getting more specifics about the type of role-play is useful -- otherwise all people will give you is a textbook 'don't do anything stupid' or 'think ahead' one-liner response.

Edit: Since the opening poster hasn't seen this post yet, I figured I'd add this here instead of post again. I can understand why someone would want to know this sort of thing, since building and developing a character's very important to role-plays and - frankly - those who actually give a shit about their characters probably won't have much interest in a role-play if they know their character could be killed at any moment and then they're expected to just replace them like a lifeless pawn. That being said, there's little advice that can be given that'll apply to every situation -- hence why I asked for specifics.

More seriously though, common sense and not going too far usually does it... but in some settings, not going far enough can be lethal. There is no single answer, as it all depends on what is happening, who is around, etc.

The best strategy I've always found is to say that you'll commit suicide if your OC dies or argue with the GM over and over again.

Actual answer, it's complicated. You get different GMs with different ideas of what's "realistically" surviveable. Some might not even care and let you do whatever you want. For rps that follow a somewhat "realistic" mindset, the basic goal of any plan should be for it to end with you surviving. This means, if the plan most likely to succeed is also the most deadly to your person, it's going to likely end with you dying. You should go with a plan that has at least a small chance of succeeding with least chance of death, always. It's better to roll the dice 5,000 times than to roll the dice once with huge stakes, if your goal is survival. You should also opt to take any plan you see that has absolutely no chance of failure.

Then again, sometimes you have to roll the dice to succeed in very dangerous situations. So it's a crapshoot, really. Your best bet is to become game theory en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_theory.
