Speciality = Tactical Marine, Apothecary, Chaplain, Devastator Marine etc

Rank = Where they are in the hierarchy of their parent Chapter I.E. Brother-Sergeant, Captain, Honour Guard, Sanguinary Priest, and so on and so forth.

This page (reddit.com/r/40krpg/comments/210lfr/de..) pretty much explains what I'd expect in better terms than I can...especially these gems:

"It has a the heaviest 40k-lore requirement to play from both the players and the GM."

"It's hard for the players to conceptualise what it's like to be a superhuman killing machine. Most attempts to roleplay this mindset result in them being one-dimensional and assume that their personalities are completely robbed from them by the SM creation process. This creates a situation where you have a bunch of super powerful arthurian knights that are all about duty killing stuff. This is not necessarily true. Space Marines are duty-bound, sure, but if this were 100% the case, you'd never have renegades or traitor marines. Furthermore, every chapter is different and has their own different ways of doing things. These difference may be small, but the players need to dial up their reaction towards those differences to at least 10 (if not 11) due to their chapter's own sacrosanct beliefs."

So, yea.

Most of the time though it'll equate to a similar thing, especially with the progression of Scout-Devastator-Assault-Tactical etc. But I see what you mean and will edit accordingly.

those are not necessarily one and the same in deathwatch, using the definition of a deathwatch devastator from the wiki as an example:

Deathwatch Devastator Marine - Devastator Marines are those Battle-Brothers tasked with manning the heaviest and most powerful of portable weapons. In his parent Chapter, the Devastator Marine might recently have ascended from the 10th Scout Company, and therefore be undertaking a crucial stage in the process of mastering all of the arts of war. In the Deathwatch, however, it is more likely that the Devastator Marine has already served in his parent Chapter as a Devastator, Assault Marine, and Tactical Marine, and is returning to the role he most excels in -- the application of overwhelming firepower.

I dropped the idea of a Carcharadon when I realized they're so mysterious and enigmatic and edgy that I have no idea how to play one. If anyone else wants to give it a go, feel free.

@Andreyich@DracoLunaris Draco is correct!

@FinDragon That's cool, no problemo.

@Hank As long as I get a sheet, you can choose whatever Chapter you like. :)

@Jbcool I'll most likely convert Corneo into an Assault Marine. Takes a bit more imagination to write anything interesting about them, but I'll manage. Or die trying.

In that case, mind if I snatch up the Apothecary role?

Alas, yes. DeadCruiser has already nabbed the role, which is why Fin is changing his own in the first place.

@FinDragon Fair enough, Assault is fine.

Oh. I thought you meant rank and specialty pre-Deathwatch - within their Chapter.

According to this this article, the Deathwatch maintains its own Scout Armor. Seems to me that Kurt's carapace armor would therefore not be blue. Thoughts? @Andreyich

Haha, no need to read it all. I'll paste the quote for you.

"Based on the Scout Armour fielded by all Space Marine Chapters, Deathwatch Scout Armour is a lightweight, non-powered suit of armour modified by Watch Fortress Erioch Deathwatch armourers specifically to suit the needs of their unique mission. Similar to the armour worn by sniper Scouts of Chapters like the Raven Guard, Deathwatch Scout Armour is composed of a hardened ceramite chestplate that covers the Space Marine's torso, shoulders and groin area worn over a reinforced body glove. Armoured, elbow-length gauntlets protect the wearer's hands, while heavily reinforced, Ceramite-toed Grox-hide boots keep his feet safe and dry. Since Deathwatch Scout Armour is essentially a half-suit over a form-fitted body glove, and is made of light materials, it does not hinder the wearer's movement and allows him to retain his natural agility and stealthiness while still providing excellent protection. This armour is often worn in conjunction with Cameleoline Cloaks."

After realizing that I don't want to essentially invent an entire chapter, I'm dialing my sauce quotient back to "Flesh Tearer."

Working on a CS as we speak.

That's exactly what I meant - in the Deathwatch you get a whole new hierarchy (and pretty much begin as equals), but it's good to know what level each character is at in their own parent Chapter.

@Hank is correct, and has given you the relevant quote, that I also sent you in the PM I wrote in response to you...which you seem not to have read. I will state this once more, and please pay attention:

Please read them both, I'm not asking for everyone to be experts in 40k lore, or even Marine lore, but if you know nothing about Marines and simply like them for the coolness factor (which is fine in itself) then you're going to have a hard time with this RP.

The Deathwatch are a specific group of specific marines with specific stuff to do. If you've no idea about them, then there's no point you joining.

The scout armour can, if you like, be from his Ultramarine days...he'll still need to paint it black anyway, just like everyone else; that just makes it kind of redundant.

@Dead Cruiser Aaaaaaw Fair enough, I can understand that! I look forward to the sheet.

May as well get writing my own then.

Good stuff thus far people, keep it up.

I'm moderately interested in this. I'll have to think of a character that would be different somehow.
