I feel like bad ideas introduced by the show shouldn't be a justification for using those bad ideas in the RP.
I don't think introducing concepts like magic and extensive cybernetics are bad ideas, it's just at the time we had no idea how such things could be implemented. I do admit, I do like RWBY to have a less... Supernatural bent to it? I mean it's one thing to have lore about the Four Maidens, but now it seems like a magical arms race to get their powers. I never liked it when shows that has these crazy weapons like gun scythes, minigun handbags, nunchuck-shotgun-staff-Sansetsukon, and giant mechs and other silly sci-fi technology focuses their efforts backwards and try to reclaim some lost magical power far beyond whatever could be made now.
Still, it's obvious that magic itself isn't really too common place. The closest to that is people using their semblance, and even dust is more like fantasy chemistry than the wizardly that seems to now be occurring. And yet it's still possible, not extinct or impossible to do. It's just that a lot of people don't know how to use it. It'd be nice to know that it's an option, rather then being told that we can only play with certain toys and build only certain things.
