Excellent post here...
It was hot work, easy to fuck off on, and the local plant life was vivid, beautiful and very distracting at first sight, but daydreaming was not his way. Instead, he counted. Steps, features of the terrain, taking note of the ground as they passed it for future reference. When he had a good position of concealment, he took a knee and took stock of the area. And it was as they were moving through those trees with that feathery leaf type, that Danny made the signal for the entire squad to freeze.

I like this. Counting. When I was in the Infantry Officer Basic Course, we would walk a 600 meter path along a specific trail in the woods of Fort Benning, Georgia. As we walked, we would count our left steps. The purpose was to determine our “Pace Count”. This pace count is used by Infantry leaders, Officers and NCOs to determine how far they have traveled. By using the pace count as well as measuring distance on the map, the two confirmed one another or helped to tell you, you were lost. After counting one’s steps, you divide the number by six and that tells you how many left steps you take in 100 meters. For me, this number was 64.

…the signal for the entire squad to freeze, would be a clenched fist held up with the non-firing arm at a right angle. Every member of the patrol repeats the hand and arm signal and movement ceases. Do not take a knee, do not point weapons in the appropriate direction, simply stop moving. This is different from the halt hand and arm signal. When this signal is given, take a knee and point weapons out and away from the impromptu “cigar-shaped” perimeter the squad assumes when it halts.

@Trivval Excellent character. I love the detail you put into Pieter Gunn. I am also a fan of Ebeen Barlow's Executive Outcomes. What they did in Angola and Sierra Leone were outstanding. The rest of the world were clueless in forcing the legitimate government to boot them from their nations. The UN Protection Force (UNPROFOR) that replaced them were useless to stop the UNITA and RUF rebels from taking over. There is a documentary about mercenaries, focusing on EO, I've seen it a number of times on the Military History Channel. It is excellent. I'm sure it is on YouTube.

Yeah I'm still not sure whether I should put my character in one of the fireteams here or just make an NPC team for him to roll with seeing as we're a platoon. Honestly a squad would have been fine imo.

Rhodesians / South Africa have been an area of interest of mine for a while. Did you know the SADF still had horse mounted cavalry up until 2012. Cool blokes.

Either that or platoon level leadership, such as Collins' commo guy. So he probably got a taste from the Fountain of Youth, as it were.

LOL...I've been training in Krav Maga for the past four years. It is a lot like that fountain of youth Pieter is sippin' on. Oh yea, I'm older than Pieter btw. :/

EDIT: I remember when I did WWII re-enactments about 17 - 20 years ago, I once had a 60 year old retired infantry officer in my rifle squad. HE was frickin' hard core. The old dudes don't fall out. They are tough and keep up.

Yeah, reminds me of an old Korean War USMC mustang, a battlefield commission, that I met. Two war vet, retired at colonel. Infantry all the way. Hardcore dude. Old Marines stay pretty active, and they seem to preserve well.

Here we go. Got a preliminary sheet up here. If it looks good, I'll move it over. I'm still working through on a fair bit of it, but I'm pretty well close to finished with it short of anything looking horribly out of place.

Depends on the training you've been given. The SAF teaches recruits in training to always take a knee when out in the field. Lower your profile, preferably behind solid cover in case you're spotted. Especially in jungle terrain. The platoon leader will indicate fire direction and movement as needed

I'm down with this character, go ahead and proceed with a post in the character sheet tab.

I posted. If any of you would like to pull the trigger on the Ambush, or make like the Salvesh heard/saw our preparations and begin firing before we are in position, go for it. We can react to contact and fight it as though it were a Hasty Ambush regardless. Have fun!

If anyone would like to do a collaboration or take on the role (create a character sheet) of the Company Commander go ahead. He is a former US Army Infantry Major who spent time in the 75th Ranger Regiment and the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii. He also has earned a fifth degree black belt in Krav Maga, black belt in Muay Thai and a First Dan (black belt) in taekwando as well as competed in some amateur MMA UFC fights.

@Cara Would you like to place Sergeant Laurent in C Team 2nd Squad? there are already three other people there. I should inform you that I am something of a Francophile and RP as a veteran of the French Foreign Legion or the 1er régiment de parachutistes d'infanterie de marine (1st Marine Parachute Infantry Regiment) also known as the French Special Air Service on occasion. Je suis de descendance française, mais américaine.

@JDolan, Istálló János looks squared away. I actually spent some time in Budapest, Hungary 15 years ago. I was assigned to Multi-National Division (North), a US Lead organization part of the NATO Operation Joint Forge contribution to the Stabilization Force (SFOR) in Bosnia-Herzegovina. I worked in the Division Headquarters. I went to Budapest on pass as well as an R&R facility at Kaposvar, Hungary near the border with Croatia. It was a fun trip. Bosnia was boring as hell.

@GuntherYeah, Budapest is a beautiful city - been there a few times myself over the past three years or so. I loved the time there, and wish I could have spent a lot more time there, but such is life. Hopefully I'll get a chance to get back there at some point soon. More broadly speaking, I have a soft spot for Eastern and Central Europe writ large.

Just to get a little clarification before I post, I'm with @CaptainBritton and the dog (which honestly is the reason I chose that squad xD), so we are already in the squad together during the first mission?

Yes! You also have the Russian character, [@Depressed Soviet] as your Team Leader and @Hellis' character, HEDBERG as your squad leader. I typically have brown rice with my chicken and Broccoli! ;)
