Can't say I'm a big fan of that idea myself. The plot seems to basically be that this girl died, hated the real world, overthrew the ruler of 'dreamland' and wants these dream seeds to essentially unify the dreamworld with the real world in order to take her revenge. If you want to avoid a darker role play such a setting for the villain is a bit on the darker side. Also just the setting of essentially after-lifers trying to mess up the real world is not really a great theme in my book. A lot of magical girl type shows usually have some aspect of chaos or some force that wants to take away good things, or even just plain greedy, as the evil force. Your plot more aligns with the recent flood of magical girl vs magical girl type shows that seem to have been popping up since the main villain is a girl who died without love which messed up her personality to hate the real world and then got powerful.

@Sorrelmyst

Tokyo Mew-Mew was decent though...I thought the twists at the end were kind of stupid though but overall it was a lighthearted type show. As for the Precure, well that really depends on which precure you look at. Some seasons are really great while some leave quite a bit to be desired though in general they have a very light hearted mood throughout the series. Precure really likes to use a unifying theme for each of their iterations of the series which is reflected in the cure names and the villains which is kind of neat in its own way.

Tokyo Mew-Mew = Endangered Species/Eco issues.

Pretty Cure/Pretty Cure Max Heart = Opposites like Darkness and Light and how if you can work together and compromise, things can work out.

Pretty Cure Splash Star = I didn't watch much of this one but its nature based.

Yes! Precure 5! = Dreams vs Nightmares. How to bring one's dreams into reality.

Yes! Precure 5! GoGo! = This one was a bit strange as the main villain was essentially an insane collector who wanted to collect everything, especially a certain woman.

Fresh Pretty Cure = Dancing, strangely enough and I think many consider this one of the weaker seasons.

HeartCatch Precure = All about the flowers of the heart and how it needs to be nurtured in order to foster ones talents and passions. Had a very interesting mechanic where the villains would use a person's 'flower' to create creatures that were embodiments of their deepest fears toward achieving their goals. A lot of people had to get used to the artstyle but many consider this one as one of their best seasons.

Suite Precure = Music and how it can bring people together.

Fresh Pretty Cure = Dancing, strangely enough and I think many consider this one of the weaker seasons.

Smile Precure = Theme around Fairy Tales and I would say probably one of the most colorful and bright of the series. About how everyone wants to achieve their own fairy tale ending.

DokiDoki Precure = The theme was about human emotions and the different aspects that make up a person. Also used a playing card theme for characters like alice in wonderland which was interesting.

Happiness Charge Precure = The main theme was love which was quite an interesting topic for a magical girl show. I liked this series for attempting such a topic though it messed up some of what could have been really interesting plot developments.

Go! Princess PreCure = I did not watch this one cause I hated the 'princess school' setting. Every girl can be a princess kind of thing but the school for training princesses was just like...wait what? Like why? XD

Mahousukai Precure = Magic, catering to magical school type trends. Pretty fun overall.

KiraKira PreCure A La Mode = Cooking, its just started and I find the animal theme outfits cute but it is a strange one to be sure.

Anyway, there are a lot of Precure and some are better than others. Then of course there are all the movies too but you can forget them for the most part. The series does give a lot of ideas for magical girl type role plays though.

Funnily enough, when I thought up of my idea, I was thinking more about Precure, though without the pure evil big bad.

Well, I was in another RP that involved the Magical Girl Raising Project. It eventually met its eventual end for being inactive. I had a male character turn into a magical girl. I probably want to do another Mahou Shoujo RP. I have a slight interest depending on the plot. I prefer the whole urban settings of the genre rather than fantastical settings with knights and dragons.

@IceHeart

I've actually watched Go! Princess Precure in its entirety. It's too bad that you skipped it. I've quite enjoyed that season. It had a rather complex story for kids regarding dreams, as in following your dreams to do whatever you are passionate about. The enemies in that story was literally despair (a common theme). But, how despair was used in this series was to target students or people with big aspirations in life and locking them away in a cage. They would feel like "It's too hard to follow your dreams, so why bother?" type of mindset. It teaches kids (little girls) that even if you have the biggest dream you want to pursue, it's always met with some sort of hardship or despair to obtain it. The final battle of the series basically sums up the whole series nicely, I believe. It was a powerful moment.

You have to keep working at it, success or failure. I'm sure we all been through that.

I digress though. It's one of my favorite series.

Interested, depending on which era of Mahou Shoujo we're going with. Personally, my favorite era was the Cardcaptor Sakura one, followed closely by Lyrical Nanoha up until ViVid, sans Record. Of course, I just really wanna do a Mahou Shoujo RP. If you want, I can link an old RP I did (that kinda died out due to inactivity but whatever) for reference.

A long time ago I remember thinking about magical girl stuff, especially Pretty Cure with their various themes, and came up with a stupid idea. Well you know how they have all these nice names like Cure Lovely, Cure Blossom, Cure Black (well that one is a bit neutral), etc. I was like, what if instead they had like really bad names based on character flaws with a special ability based on that name.

For example: (I decided to use French just because)

Fille Plain - the ability to normalize everything. So Super Ultra Punch gets downgraded to Normal Punch.
Fille Envy - the ability to make enemies envious of each other and cause internal strife.
ETC

Basically a spoof on the traditional magical girl formula for comedic effect and a way to make the flaw an integral part of the character and story.

Mostly just wanted to throw that out there for the lols, but with some tweaking could be fashioned into something.

I would do a magical girl RP, though I would prefer magical girl raising project or madoka magica style, doesn't have to be exact but I'd at least prefer something with higher stakes. But I seem to be the minority on that one.

@SleepingSilenceI dunno, stuff like Sailor Moon, Precure and Symphogear often involve the destruction of Earth (at the very least; the last arc of Sailor Moon had the fate of the universe at stake) as the villain's endgame plan. Not sure how the stakes could be higher than that.

I mean hell, even Nanoha's second season involved something that would probably have destroyed Earth if it wasn't stopped.

..Hasn't the whole point of most of this discussion been that you can do a decent Mahou Shojou plot without taking tone cues from those two shows?

Typically magical girl series have very high stakes towards the end, like any given Precure series, Nanoha, Symphogear, Sailor Moon... Quite a few others, really.

In fact vaguely from what I know(Magical Girl Raising Project seems like a waste of really great designs and ideas to me unfortunately), they're all higher stakes then that one.

Yeah, "Magical Girl Hunger Games" isn't that world-ending really.

My favorite kind of magical girl series is the type that's got a pretty serious main plot but not overly dark.

That's why my favorites tend to be stuff like Nanoha or Symphogear.

@Lost Cause No, I agree with you. But that's why I said that's why I was in the minority. I like dark shit. What can I say? XP I figured I'd throw my two cents.

@Rin I'll admit, I haven't watch a lot of Precure, but it seemed very childish to me. Some of the Nanoha's series had some darker moments in it. I'm just saying, I'd prefer more dramatic aspect than slice of life stuff.

@VitaVitaAR I honestly really liked the anime for that one, only real flaw imo was the mascot was tryharding a bit too much. And the manga apparently gets better. True, though I'd prefer to start where the action begins, if you feel me. :P
