There's always a point when enough is enough. You and your kinsfolk are sent to work all day and return home with just enough to get by, but you've heard rumors that the local Duke is going to raises taxes again soon. Looking out of your window, you can see an emaciated man laying out on the sidewalk. You don't recognize him, but he's not an unfamiliar sight. He's just one of the many hungry, homeless. Those not lucky enough to have a stable wage.
At the market, you can hear the owner complain about how he has to buy expensive Philia-manufactured goods, which hikes prices up and drives his profit down significantly. He appears to be a well-off man, but it wouldn't surprise anyone if it turned out he could be mere months away from having to declare bankruptcy, unable to keep his store afloat amid heavy business taxes and tariffs restricting local production of goods.
Where this money goes is no mystery. At night you can look towards the Northeast to see the brightly lit mansions of the aristocracy. The upper class drink, carouse and grow fat during their lavish parties. They party on, hoping to forget the unrest buzzing a scant few miles away. But it goes even further than that. Even the nobles that govern the planet are beholden to another set of masters on a far-off dying planet. The taxes imposed on you and the resources exploited from your work are taken off planet to be spent on the petty wars and exorbitant luxuries of an ineffectual, buffoon of a monarch.
There are whispers of a rebellion. The origins of these rumors is unknown, but they are spread without regard for class or occupation. Who will lash out first is unknown, but ultimately irrelevant. The current order is held together by a scant few pieces of tape, and the arrival of the King tomorrow is set to rip them clean off.
Overview
Location: The Planet Georgia Time period: The year 2371 Age Requirement: Characters must be at least 18 years old, and at most 70
Common Sense is a Post Post Apocalyptic RP, a setting in which it has been so long since the apocalypse has occurred that humanity has managed to rebuild and continue on with society almost as if nothing had ever happened. The Apocalypse in question here began in the year 2007, when the dead began to rise, not quite living and with a hunger for human flesh. In the generations to follow the crash of society, humanity managed to regroup, largely rid themselves of the walking dead and get back to business fighting each other over the planet's dwindling resources.
Two of the Earth's most powerful countries, based in what was the United States and China respectively have started back up the colony business, this time exploring off into space and finding two separate habitable planets to colonize. The planet of interest for this RP is Georgia, colonized by the kingdom of Philia (centered in what was New England), and named after the reigning monarch at the time George the First. A couple generations more have passed and the planet is well populated and being drained of wealth and resources by its colonizing power, and almost nobody on the planet is happy with this situation. That's where you come in.
Characters of this game are inhabitants of Georgia's capital city, New Cardiff, which is currently preparing for the imminent arrival of the current reigning monarch: Albert II and his wife Liliya of Newnan. Albert is an almost universally unpopular candidate for his hedonistic lifestyle, arrogant demeanor, and warlike tendencies, yet he seems unaware of this fact and if visiting the planet for one of his many vacations. The entire city is on edge, and the result of this vacation could irrevocably alter the fate of the galaxy.
That apocalyse sound familiar? Well that's because it is. Common Sense is technically a hybrid fandom RP, serving as a bridge between The Walking Dead and Firefly. I don't actually watch either of these series or know all that much about them aside from the research I've conducted to make this RP possible. Aside from a few bits and pieces here, the setting is more or less mine and you don't need knowledge of either franchise to take part. Perhaps more significantly, this RP is canon for @Lady Amalthea's Shared Universe, working as the unifier for her Alternate Timeline games The Walking Dead – Year Three, and After Miranda. If you've been in one of her Rps, you'll have a general idea of what to expect with this game. That said, this is also my game, and I do things a bit differently.
State of the Monarchy
For all your more in-depth lore needs, feel free to read the below to get a better understanding of the setting.
In the year 2007, the dead stopped staying down. They swarmed the streets en masse and quickly triggered a series of societal collapses around the world better known as an apocalypse. However, mankind is no so easily put down, even by themselves. This catastrophic event did not completely wipe out the human race, and an estimated 40% of the total global population managed to avoid dying in the chaos. (The number changes depending on which historian you're asking the specific geographic area. War-torn, urban and under developed locations got hit the hardest, with rural, sparsely populated areas able to pull through without too much loss of life Some estimates are as low as 16% and others are as high as 63%.)
Within scant few years, survivors formed their own settlements, pooling resources and labor to eke out something of a stable living. These settlements quickly grew in size and number, growing from mere villages into full blown civilizations. After more or less bringing the rampant banditry of the post-apocalypse to a halt, these settlements focused on solving that pesky zombie issue permanently.
Now armed with knowledge of how to kill the walking dead and appropriate tactics, the hordes of undead were steadily whittled down in a fashion not unlike any sort of dangerous animal species that was deemed as troublesome. They couldn't be quite hunted to extinction for obvious reasons, but no longer were they a threat on any scale outside of the personal.
Around this point roughly 60 years had passed since the apocalypse first occurred and humanity had resolved most of the issues brought about by that event. So clearly the next step was to turn on each other for wealth and resources.
The two super-powers to emerge from the ensuing battles showed themselves to be the Kingdom of Philia based in what was the New England area and the Republic of Wei, centered around Hong Kong. Relations between the two countries started out as strained, but over time escalated into a full-blown cold war.
One of the biggest points of contention between the two superpowers is the level of technological supremacy possessed, so when Philia developed interplanetary travel, Shu was not far behind. Ironically, the establishment of colony planets within the same system was done by both sides with no knowledge of the others'. It was a stroke of luck that both countries discovered separate habitable planets within the same star system, but one that is not being wasted.
It's been 53 years since both colonies have been opened up to the public, which is the point we find ourselves at when the RP begins.
The planet Earth is doing much the same as it has been for billions of years. It still orbits around the sun and makes a single revolution in 365.25(ish) days. Where things get more tricky is when you get to the parts of the Earth that are less eternal that organic beings care about: food, water, diversity of species in plants and animal. Most of those things are in short supply for a variety of reasons, but the simplest explanation that covers most bases is that overpopulation and pollution are finally catching up to bite humanity in the ass. The amount of food and clean water able to be produced is dwindling while the demand continues to increase ever upward. Furthermore, the chemical makeup of the very air is altering, becoming increasingly toxic and gradually transforming the atmosphere into a pressure cooker.
The Earth is still a livable environment, but it will not remain such for very long. How much longer is a question of debate, with some arguing that the planet will become uninhabitable within the next ten years, and others saying it could be another century and a half before continued habitation becomes untenable. However, it's an unspoken agreement that the end of the Earth is coming and soon. In the grand scheme of life on the planet, the clock reads 2 minutes to midnight.
The Earth's encroaching death shapes much of the current state affairs of the planet itself, along with the social apocalypse that humanity just recently pulled itself out of. Most of the larger countries that had composed the world have since broken up into smaller nation-states during the social breakdown and restructuring of the zombie apocalypse. Democracies and republics are mostly a thing of the past, although they are not entirely unheard of. However, most governments are monarchies, dictatorships, aristocracies or theocracies with varying amounts of authoritarianism from nation to nation.
The first and foremost thing every nation is occupied with is hoarding as many resources it can, namely fresh water and agricultural seed. Water is considered the most important good a nation can have, such that is more valuable than any of the traditionally desired precious metals or possessing large quantities of fossil fuels. Given the growing scarcity of basic resources, any given country is faced with a few choices: wage war to take someone else's water/land/resources, search for any potentially hidden sources of water or food sources within your own borders, or find some other way of obtaining much needed goods. Most elect to pick the first option, and if either of the other choices are selected, it is usually in conjunction with the first as well.
Only two countries have thus far managed to have any success with the third option: Philia and Wei have both managed to establish off-world colonies and used them to acquire more water than would be possible on Earth, thus becoming fabulously wealthy and the de facto superpowers of the world. Other countries, seeing the success the other two have had are scrambling to catch up in the space race, but if any major leeway has been had, none of it is publicly known.
The Kingdom of Philia, based in what was the New England area and the Eastern coast of Canada of North America is known for two things: trading and sea travel. Originally a nation of little importance, Philia set itself apart with their extensive trade networks and over the course of decades strengthened their military might to defend their economic ventures from privateers and pirates. However, Philia did not truly being a top player until they managed to find and settle the planet Georgia, setting themselves as the first interplanetary power and deriving previously forgotten amounts of wealth and power. Nowadays, the Philian navy is the strongest navy on Earth, and through this navy the royal crown has expanded their kingdom into an empire with a major foothold in every continent except Asia, Oceania and Antarctica. Culturally, Philia has inherited the values and practices of America and Europe (namely Great Britain), but strained through a filter of hardship to produce a hardworking and loyal group of people that don't tolerate overt selfishness among peers.
Despite having the word “Republic” in its name, the Republic of Wei is not even close to being a democratic nation. Instead, Wei is a Kritarchy, a form of government where the power is held by judges, who exert their authority by enacting legislation through jurisdiction. Located in what was Southeasten China , Wei was the predominant force on the global scale before Philia came onto the stage. They were quick to catch up with the upstart nation's exploration and managed to settle a coincidentally nearby planet (now known as Xinon (pronounced SHI-non)) before the Kingdom could expand their extraterrestrial empire even further. However, Xinon's recent revolt and overthrowal of the Wei powers has put the nation in a vulnerable position: one that could potentially spell their end as a superpower. China was hit the hardest by the zombie outbreak given both the sheer scope of its population and the density in which they're concentrated. Those that managed to survive did so by creating focused groups that looked after the good of the group over all else. The culture of the Wei promotes unity over all else: forces/characteristics that disrupt harmony and order are shunned and every person is expected to stay in their lane.
The short of what Georgia is like from a geological perspective is “virtually identical to Earth.” There isn't the looming threat of environmental collapse, nor are there 5 continents and a supercontinent and there are a lot of little differences that are to be expected, but anyone traveling to or from Earth will have very little to adjust to, assuming they arrive at a location similar to their native environment.
The relationship between the Earth and her offspring is something of a love-hate ordeal. Most people born and raised on Georgia see the Earth as an integral piece of the Big Picture, but one that is ultimately waning in importance that acts more important than it truly is. The higher classes view the Earth as a valued equal, the proletariat see Earth as an oppressive force throwing its weight around.
The Earth despite its declining state contains the majority of the human population, the most high-end technology available, and more high-skilled labor than anywhere else. Up until the past couple of decades or so, immigration from Earth was the greatest source of population growth, and trade with Earth is the most profitable relationship available to any enterprising entrepreneur.
This attitude is not shared with Earth-born people. They view extraterrestrial planets as a resource, and don't take colonists as seriously as they would other terrans. However, this attitude has begun to shift since the Xinon revolution for better or worse. Now instead of just being backwater hicks, colonists are potentially dangerous backwater hicks and on an individual level are treated with a slightly greater degree of caution than before. However, Georgia is stick given the short end of stick by the royal crown, and resentment is rife under the red heel by blue bloods and red necks alike.
Georgia is treated as more of a conquered peoples than citizens of the Kingdom of Philia. Most of the aristocrats that populate Georgia are sent from Earth, and every member of the highest political offices are Earth born members of important families.
The highest ranked members of Georgian government are Lords & Ladys who rule over large bodies of land (anything roughly the size of a continent) with effectively absolute power and answer directly to the King. They are supposed to act as his eyes and ears, but spend more time plotting against each other than they do actually doing their stated job.
Underneath a Lord or Lady is a Minister, who is given a piece of land the size of a large country (think about the size of Sudan) to rule. They have less power than their boss, but are still very powerful figures who have extensive legislative powers at their disposal. The Minister is also the highest ranking office a Georgian native has been known to hold.
Below a Minister is a Governor, who controls the law enforcement and civil disputes of sections of land approximately the size of a small country (like Belgium). There are fewer Governors than Ministers, for they are only appointed to places with large enough populations to justify their existence, mostly cities and towns. Outside of a capital city like New Cardiff, the Governor is likely the only member of the Imperial government to be visible to the common folk.
At levels of government below the Governors, Georgians are allowed to decide for themselves so long as they do not attempt to infringe upon the powers of higher ranks of government, and at these levels are where you will find most native Georgian politicians. Here you will find your mayors and local judges and town representatives. Interestingly enough, despite the abuse of power found at the top levels of government, the distance from Earth, the sheer amount of landmass needed to be governed and amount of stratification of powers caused by the former factor has lead to Georgians in many ways having more political freedoms than their brethren on Earth.
The setting of this RP, New Cardiff is the capital city of Georgia, and the largest city on the planet, boasting a total population of 3.6 million people. Considered the default landing location for those traveling to the planet, New Cardiff is home to 3 different varieties of ports: space, air and water. The city is located at the intersection of two major rivers, the Langlois (pronounced lawng-less) and Warner, which not only provides ample trade routes and travel methods, but also large amounts of fertile land to support much of the population in the city and be shipped back to Earth for Philian citizens.
New Cardiff is the center of all government, where every Lord and Lady and most of the aristocracy live. Near the center of the city is the Royal Court: the official government building that stands tall and stone, looking over the colonists in the stead of the King. However, despite officially living there, most of the nobles do not actually reside within the urban center itself. Instead they deign to reside outside of the city proper on lavish estates funded by royal funds, but still close enough to the city to have access to most of its conveniences.
Inside the city reside mostly working and middle class peoples who find themselves confronted with the realities of the urban condition. Albert imposes high duties upon all goods being traded to Earth (that being most goods that are produced on planet) to fund wars “back home”, which makes it economically unviable for business owners to turn much of a profit if any, results in mass unemployment, and even those proletariat people with full-time employment barely making enough to scrape by in the best of times. That said, New Cardiff is not a lawless city. At least not at the moment. With the incoming arrival of the King and Queen, the Royal government has taken to cleaning up the city by any means possible. The Armed Forces on planet have been put to the use of law enforcement, supplanting the colonial police and ensuring that any legal infraction will be punished beyond the full extent of the law.
Although they were the cause of the greatest loss in human population from a single event, zombies have become almost a non-issue in modern times on Earth and is even less of an issue on the extraterrestrial planets. The main reasons zombies wreaked as much havoc as they did was the ignorance of what they were and the rate at which they multiplied. Nowadays, a zombie is seen as about as dangerous as a rabid animal and treated in a similar fashion.
The modern medical terminology for zombism is Post-Mortem Reanimation Syndrome (PMRS), and the causes and mechanics of such are now common knowledge both in the medical world and among the general public. The agent to blame for zombies is a bacteria dubbed pupa homocorpus (abbr. p. Corpus), a bacteria that is located within water soluble solutions. While living, the bacteria does not affect carriers, but upon death a chain reaction takes affect. The bacteria works its way into the brain stem in about the space of 8 hours and gains control of the dead body, using it as a medium to spread itself to other human bodies.
P. corpus is spread through consuming liquids containing it and through the swapping of bodily fluids (such as kissing a carrier of P. Corpus or being bitten by a zombie); however, an important detail discovered was that p. corpus can only survive in on Earth. When taken out into space or another habitable planet like Xinon, the bacteria slows activity and then dies within the space of a few minutes. Carriers of the bacteria are mostly unaffected, the human body acting as a shield against the alien conditions, although some studies indicate than extended periods of time spent off of Earth (a minimum of 2 decades) can reduce or even eliminate the number of p. corpus found in the carrier's body.
Furthermore, a deceased carrier of p. corpus can be prevented from undergoing PMRS if the brain stem is severed from the rest of the brain. For this purpose, specially made devices to “euthanize” a corpse are widely available for free or very low cost. These devices are a handheld tube about the size of a ballpoint pen, and when a button located at one end is pressed, a very thin, sharp blade is launched from the other end. When placed at the proper angle and brace against the neck at the base of the skull, the blade will sever the brain stem and remain in the head, cleanly and easily preventing new zombies from arising. These “death-confirmation” devices are occasionally used against living people for criminal acts, but these instances are viewed as an unfortunate, but accepted cost for keeping the zombie problem under control.
Occasionally, a zombie will come to rise, and at this point it is up to law enforcement to deal with the dead body, usually meted out with a swift bullet through the head. Very rarely on Earth a zombie outbreak will manage to go unchecked to the point of becoming a hoard and it is at this point that military force is called in to quell the uprising before it can potentially snowball into an international disaster.
Some key words you might want to know Terran – Refers to anyone from planet Earth Pony – Derogatory term for a citizen of the Kingdom of Philia Alien – Refers to anyone from a planet that is not Earth George – Derogatory term for Georgians used by terran Philians. Used in place of a name. Way – Corruption of “Wei.” Used to refer to citizens of the Republic of Wei. Chen – Nickname for Wei and Xinon people alike, usually applied to men. Not derogatory, but often annoying for the recipient. An – Pronounced like “Anne.” Term for a zombie. Short for “Reanimated body” The Black – The vast amount of space where there is nothing Kong – The Wei/Xinon term for The Black. Means “empty” in Mandarin AU – Short for “astronomical unit,” 1 AU is the distance between the Sun and the Earth. Used to measure “near space” between planets within a system. There are roughly 62,000 AU in a single light year, so light years and parsecs are used to measure “far space” in between stars in the galaxy.
Recently on Earth, paintings and artifacts from the 18th Century have been rediscovered and fashion has shifted to represent the cultural fascination with the Rococo style. White wigs have become fashionable, usually produced from synthetic material, although high-end wigs are produce from human hair. Palettes favor light, pastel colors over dull or high-saturated hues. Women's hips are emphasized in clothes (padded underclothes are available to those not born with the genes for them) and tight pants are the norm for men. The degree to which individuals adhere to these fashion principles varies, but in general the higher class someone is, the more likely they are to dress like someone from the 1700s while lower class people are more likely to dress in a style akin to modern day wear.
Surprisingly little information was truly lost during the zombie apocalypse. A great deal of technology and literature survived the ordeal, and most secrets that were forgotten were rediscovered within a couple generations. Since the recovery of society, science has made leaps and bounds, but most of the benefits derived from this work is “invisible:” new construction materials that are stronger and lighter than conventional fare, more efficient engines, improved armor for soldiers and police officers.
The most accessible visible advances are in space travel and hover technology. Commercial space flight is accessible, but is expensive and takes a great deal of time: it takes about a month to travel from Earth to Georgia one way, however it is still a cornerstone of the current state of the galaxy. Hover technology has largely supplanted wheels and treads in vehicles, which allow for greater mobility across terrains than ever before. “High tech” gadgets like a cloak that actively camouflages the wearer or laser-based weaponry are known to exist, but are largely experimental and/or owned by government entities.

@The Fated Fallen I've been lurking hoping someone would post their CS first but no-one has, so I'm thinking I may have to take that bullet :P!
Yeah, I'm putting time into making one but I've been a bit busy (which no-one seems to believe :S). I know I'll have it up by the end of the week, and someone making one prior to me would help a lot (since this universe is totally new to me and the reading doesn't seem to flesh out much upon my first reading)
Don't worry too much about contradicting lore or anything like that. If it helps to think of it a certain way, treat it like modern times, just with hovercars and commercial spaceflight around. And sometimes zombies.
Name: Sunie Jamison Marks Sobriquet: Smith, Goldie Age: 37 Birthday: March 4th Gender: Female Ethnicity: Caucasian Social Class: Working Class Birth Planet: Georgia Occupation: Weapons Smith Citizenship: Philian Allegiance: Separatist
Appearance
Height: 5'11" Weight: 145lbs Build: Slender and toned Skin Tone: Fair Eye Color: Blue-green with flakes of gold Hair/Wig: Light blonde, wavy with course texture, kept relatively short Scars/Tattoos/Piercings: Numerous scars from various missions, small tattoo of an anvil on her right inner wrist, long scar that runs around her left shoulder and underarm. Misc: Left arm is completely clear of all scars (it is a complete bio enhanced cybernetic replacement from her shoulder down) Style of Apparel: Sunie prefers to dress for comfort and usually dresses in tones of yellow and gold clothing. Pants, loose fitting shirts or tank tops, boots, long duster jacket she wears when she leaves the shop. She can dress more high end and blend in well but prefers comfort and function over form.
Personality: Sunie tends to keep to herself, always have. The life of a Merc made her develop a walled heart and soul; one that still remains to this day. She will rarely speak about how she feels if it is dealing with something personal. Work related however and just general chit chat she can be a bit of a motor mouth. She leaps before she thinks much of the time, especially if it comes to someone she is loyal to. Her loyalty runs deep when it comes to the few people breathing she calls friends.
Ever adaptable she can usually come up with some out of the box idea quickly to get the job done. It has helped her a great deal with her smithing, becoming one of the top weapons smiths in the area. Her skills are high sought after but she tries to only sell to a select group of people, all of her weapons are customized for the user. Yet times being what they are, sometimes you just have to sell to whoever has the money. Underneath everything, even that fiery temper and cold persona, she is actually a very kind and loving person. This can make things intense at times; especially if she is trying to keep those feelings under wraps. Self-Image: Sunie sees herself as a work in progress, one that has crashed and burned many times before. Like with the weapons she creates and perfects, there is always a long trail of failures. Such is the same with her life. She has tried so much but as she fails as one thing it points her in a new direction. She sees herself as 10,000 ways on how not to live. Sexuality: Heterosexual Relationship Status: Divorced Hobbies:
Tinkering
Tics:
Smoking, constantly keeping one between her lips in her hands or behind her hear to fidget with
Chewing on her bottom lip

History
Opinions on Revolution:Revolution is never an easy thing, you have to be willing to sacrifice everything for something larger than yourself. This means laying your life on the line as well as others but the thing is you have to walk that tightrope carefully to ensure you don't become the very thing you hate. Am I for a revolution? Yes. I'm tired of seeing the streets where I was born and raised be nothing but a walking mausoleum. I see the footsteps of the dead before they even draw their last breath. The people should be allowed to breathe the fresh air without worrying that it will be their last. It's time. History: Sunie was born in New Cardiff, in what she refers to as Cheap Side. A poor industrial side of town to Megan and Chris Marks. She is the eldest of three sisters and all of them were unwanted. Not completely unwanted but it put a harder strain on their parents than they were able to deal with. Growing up on the streets and fending for herself and her sisters taught her quickly how to get what she needed, or at least how to get enough to keep them with food in their bellies.
By the time she came of age Sunie was working as an apprentice in weapons smithing shop. It was nothing spectacular but it provided some income for her family as well as some weapons to be able to defend themselves against the more desperate in the area. Her sisters followed in her footsteps, learning how to take care of themselves but they were a tad more sheltered thanks to Sunie than Sunie had been. Both her parents having lost all hope became the girls responsibility. Their age catching up with them has not helped and they look at themselves as useless which just adds to the work that Sunie and her sisters have to do to keep things running.
Sunies mentor died some ten years ago in a shop accident which left Sunie without her left arm. This was devastating but there was a small light at the end of the tunnel, her mentor left the shop to Sunie since he did not have any children. This was a godsend and a curse. Sure, now they had a better grasp on financials for a while and allowed her to get a state of the art replacement but being a weapons smith is not easy, especially when you are wanting to be part of a revolution. Having so many from the government coming in and demanding pieces is not easy, especially since they refuse to pay what each piece is worth. They are barely able to keep their heads above water right now and it is leaving a foul taste in Sunies mouth. It is only a matter of time before Sunie either snaps or their drown.

@Dragoknighte Fantastic. Another question. Would Lockpicking be General or Action? After that, I should be able to finish my sheet and send it for approval
The stars align and I get to be part of a rare event tomorrow, a day off (only the one though)! If I'm still not too busy trying to sort out my wreck of a house in that time I'll sort a CS out
