Related somewhat, but it drives me nuts when people post WIP sheets, especially when they don't have any of the fields filled out. Just keep it in a Word file or Gdoc (or the character sheet subforum on this very site); it looks a lot better when you submit a finished sheet for review rather than forcing the GM to dig through pages of OOC to find the damn thing.

Aww heck no. WIP appears in my OOC, I have a mod delete it. (And that will usually strike the person out from being able to join since my rules states no WIP's. If they can't even follow that, I don't want to bother with them.)

Oh man is that a thing people do? Like, just post [WIP Post] with nothing else in it? Doesn't that basically grind the RPG to a halt while you're waiting on that one person to finish their post?

A WIP post? You're joking right? People actually do that? ~facepalms~ And here I thought I had heard of it all, this is a first for that one....

Imma join in on the whole WIP thing, I've seen in some RPs and ones I have GMed in the past. Some people have actually written in their personality and bio sections as TBR (to be role played) that just annoys the crap out of me, I want to know what makes the character tick they fill everything else out. To me it feels like they halfassed it.

Maybe it is not a good idea to make an interest check if you are going to be away for almost a week.

While I can certainly appreciate characters changing from what you originally envisioned personality wise, I absolutely agree. When I'm GMing, I tell people if there's stuff they want to keep secret, the GMs need to know about it. There's no excuses for not filling out a character history if it's requested.

It's a little petty, but since this thread's about bitching...

Continuously having people talk about OCs you don't know all the time can get tiresome and make you feel unwelcome. Might as well have a "Hello my name is Fifth Wheel" tag on your shirt.

it may just be me but it does grind my gears a little when I get a comment from somebody something along the lines of "I don't like the outfit you chose for your character"
...Well, they're my character and I do like it so just accept that's what I picked? Didn't realise I needed somebody else to decide my characters wardrobe for me.

I have never, ever run into this. That is ridiculous that someone would be vain enough to be bothered by someone else's aesthetic choices.

Unless it doesn't make sense for the setting (like motorcycle gear in a medieval RP) or very 18+ material, I don't see why you have to change a character's attire just because the GM doesn't like it.

As for personality, I like laying down the groundwork for my OCs to develop. And then I see my OCs taking a slow turn away from the original intention and it's usually too late to realize.
For example...
Umbreon makes a villain OC that's supposed to be unpredictable and tyrannical.
Many pages later, Umbreon realizes that the villain OC turned out to be an affably evil character that follows a gentlemen policy.
Umbreon wonders what the f*** happened there.
I get that sometimes the characterization of a character can change from the original intention, but this has happened to me many times in my RPing career.

I honestly think the biggest problem a majority of the roleplayers on this site face is that they can't grasp "Show, don't tell."

Examples I have seen recently;

"Gosh! My character is so smart and clever, even though I've done nothing to suggest that!"

"My character's a reeeeeal edgy dick, lemme just have him sulk in a corner instead of taking a perfect opportunity for him to be an asshole!"

Something I've seen pop up a couple of times over the years with different people, but why is it such a big deal for some people to accept that some female characters DON'T have to have an interest in having kids? O.O not everyone is cut out to be a mother and the whole stereotype that every woman should immediately desire to have offspring is kind of sucky.

Can't count the times I've made characters who REALLY didn't want/shouldn't have babies, have them, because the person I was writing with insisted upon pairing everyone up and having them all produce offspring. People can be in a happy relationship and never entertain the thought of children and be just as happy as people with kids.

I agree. I am guilty of this in the past, but after playing a few games and writing a few stories it has become much easier to handle. Learning how to show and not tell could provide a bit of suspense, because if noone knows how they'll act or react, then you can catch them offguard!

It takes a genius to play a genius accurately, but anyone can play a dumbass.

Going on a tangent here but I remember seeing a video about the original Alien movie and how it was able to portray horror so well. It came down to the environment that was built, the expression of what is unseen can be more feared than the seen, and it tapped into elements that were disturbing to viewers but never in a slaughterfest like the saw movies.

So the reason I bring this up is because it follows the same road as what you are discussing in roleplays. Several people want to tell us how the characters should feel, act and be portrayed and yet they don't set up those ground basics for the character. If someone is smart you can use mannerisms and descriptions on appearance rather than dialogue on how flux capacitors work. Don't tell us that alien is scary, let us believe that it might be worse than what you are leading on.

Every time I want to play a good themed character I end up.... well see an example.

GM:"You encounter a baby on the road"
My character:

GM:"Mid air the robes peel away from the "baby" to reveal that it actually was a goblin in disguise. An ambush! A few more goblins jump from their hiding..."
Team:"Nice call man, how did you know?"
Me:"Of course I knew...pure instinct"

I absolutely HAAAATTTEEEE having a small roleplaying pool. The only active person I have right now as a friend is currently working on finishing school and graduating,so I won't be posting much on our threads until then. I have tried before to find people interested in the things I like, but I think I have covered that annoyance before on this thread or another. And while I do want to roleplay more, I have many things that are stressing me out-School,my D&D club, writing my stories and working on a one shot campaign. Otherwise,if I didn't have any of these,I'd be more active in my search.

(yes,I had more to add.)

Am I wrong though. Whenever people play a supposed genius they just meta-game the shit out of everything to make the character seem smart.
