One thing I've been working on is a massive upgrade to the Guild's underwhelming
/chat
server: by turning it into an official Discord server.
The Guild already has a 10-month-old, community-run, unofficial chat server running on Discord which will continue to exist. The community-run Discord server has been an essential part of the Guild for a while now and I'm thankful that the community took it upon itself to create and run it.
But an official Discord server lets me do some interesting, automated things by integrating into the Guild and programmatically linking Guild accounts with Discord accounts since I have API access.
Right now, the Guild staff have been testing it since it's proven to be an amazing tool for moderators.
Also, on the official Discord server, nickname changes are disabled since GuildBot automatically gives you your Guild username once you authenticate with the server. Some people will not like this, but I currently don't see a way of allowing custom Discord nicknames while also displaying your Guild username so that people know who you are.
I will launch it soon for public testing, and I will replace the "Chat" link in the header with a link to the Discord server along with updating it so that it shows how many Discord users are online:
I'll keep the /chat server around until it naturally fizzles out to zero users since it's running on a free server IIRC (I'll have to double-check
).
But I would like to shut it down eventually since it lets me delete a bunch of code, and that's always a good thing.
If you want to test out the official Discord server, just visit this link:
roleplayerguild.com/discord (You'll need a Discord account)
If you're having any issues, like landing on a "FORBIDDEN" page, please PM me on the unofficial Discord server.
