@JbcoolWell when he took control of the equipment/weapons for selling stuff, as well as when he was a law enforcer, he'd gotten familiar with various types of equipment. Though I could have him become the quartermaster of his unit when he was in the military.
I would like to forward my interest, specifically in filling a hole that doesn't look like it has been considered, and put forth an application for a medic. But I do have a few questions that you may have answered and I missed, so forgive me if any these are redundant:
How advanced is technology? I know you listed several series that I am unfamiliar with, but just a galactic average on computer science, data storage, food processing, flight technology, etc, would be neat. I understand GURPS Tech Levels, if that helps.
You did say that aliens were okay, but also said you wanted a mostly human team. Xenobiology would kind of be necessary either way, I suppose, but how many species are well known enough for a human to learn medical practises for them?
More on tech: How are you getting around the travel times between stars? FTL, cold storage, something else fun and exciting?
If I do end up making an alien, precisely how truly alien can I get? Size would be a problem on a human built ship, as would certain biological issues, so that question becomes somewhat important.

And lastly, how do you feel about AIs?
Good questions, and I'll try to answer them as much as I can;
1. Technology, at the highest level, is beyond much of what we have today - I'd say Star Trek/Wars level of technology for a reference point. It does vary from place-to-place and civilisation to another one, meaning that some planets are still stuck in the Stone Age while others could annihilate them with supersonic bombs or such.
2. As many as you want, this is as much my narrative as your own, so if you wish for there to be a few that are well known then that's fine. Humanity has spread far-and-wide, so as long as they're not exceedingly high numbers it'd make sense.
3. FTL is the usual mode of transport, using said 'gates' as way-points and strategic choke points, like 'warp travel' but more restricted and less random.
4. Again, as alien or non-alien as you like, we've not even started the actual narrative yet, so we'd be able to wrangle some specifics for the character before going forward I'd think.
5. AI is fine, if rarer than usual - mostly depends on what you mean, as in sentient robots or nano-tech.
I realise I'm not helping much, and I apologise, but the specifics of many things are going to be decided within the IC itself; if you've got more questions, or want me to extrapolate on some points then I can.
Ahk-krat-rahz(only a close representation that humans can pronounce) is from a long-lived and intelligent race of apex predators that has been a member state of the Valnaur Empire for a very long time. While most people tend to assume the Zkz'Karnis are insects due to their hexipedal, carapace covered bodies and mandibled faces, but are actually more a cross between a theropod and an amphibious crustacean, though using either of those words to describe one within earshot may get you killed. Despite their average size of ten feet, with a length of fifteen, and a mass that makes star travel somewhat obnoxious for them, they took to it like Frzi-zashs to liquid nourishment. Tool use is possible because of both very fine motor skills with mandibles and a pair of dangling forelimbs located just beneath where the long neck meets the main body. The head is balanced out by a stubby tail, developed in evolution for that singular purpose. Their heads are generally covered in elaborate crests except for immediately after mating season, though the females tend to keep them on their entire lives. While their carapace makes them impossible to bring down for most of the other species on their homeworld, it turns out that larger calibre modern arms, and especially energy weapons, have little issue killing them. The first years after their conquering by the Empire were particularly difficult, as they do not have many hatchlings during any successful breeding.
Ahk's carapace is mottled with light and dark browns, reds, and greys. Scarring across her thick carapace from multiple sources she does not discuss shines like the inside of an abalone shell, from minerals deposits that cause its growth, and give her a grizzled appearance. Unusual for her species, there are no clan markings painted onto her sides or armoured legs, and she wears no crest at all, leaving the top of her head bare except for the ridged carapace plates there.
The Zkz'Karnis are a caste system society, mostly based on logic and merit. However, Ahk was unfortunate enough to be hatched to the lowest class on the planet, those that are sand-coloured. While originally because food was scare and their colouring made it difficult to hunt well in the jungles, the stigma has stuck with this particular caste so much that they are actually being bred out slowly, as it is rare that they find a mate with their normally green brethren.
Seeing no opportunity for a mate nor a good life on her homeworld, Ahk studied hard at university, in topics as diverse as engineering, art, sociology, and archaeology, once she found out that her university was one of the best for xenobiology, and offered a transfer program to other systems, she knew she had found her answer. Thirty years later, she is a very accomplished xenobiologist and surgeon, capable of performing life saving techniques and stopping virulent plagues in most of the known system. However, no hospital has so far been willing to hire a giant, flesh-eating insect for their medical programs, and she had to do her entire residencies by virtual reality interfaces. To pay for the extremely costly education, Ahk has had to rely on her other well-developed skillset, programming. She is capable of developing tools for several of the most universal languages, and has developed her own assistant AI for dealing with diagnoses and day-to-day problems encountered with communications. The species is not capable of naturally speaking Humanitas, and must rely on translators, something the Empire has used as an economic dampener on their growth by making them prohibitively expensive. Ahk has gotten around this by making her own.
But programming is not allowing her to catch up on her bills, and criminal activity is not in nature. The Empire would make her a grunt were she to try and join the military, as no other species seems to recognise that the Zkz'Karnis are actually smarter than the beasts they look like. So she has put out her name into the mercenary circles, hoping that some enterprising leader will take a chance on one of the more accomplished doctors in the sector. Others were swift to point her to the planet of Taenarum, and seeing no other option, she has added to her already considerable debt to make it there and set herself up in the tiniest possible rooms while awaiting with trepidation for someone to hire her despite her lack of combat experience.
I am looking for some sort of art to help with visualisation, but it's been somewhat difficult to find anything that isn't a damn bug.
Edit:
Height: 8'4", capable of lowering her head down to 6'10" to fit through human sized passages with difficulty. Length: 13' width: 9' 6", legs can squeeze in to fit corridors as small as 6'6" with difficulty. Forelimbs have six digits with four joints each, that fold up into pockets on the carapace for protection. Ends of legs are blunt, but capable of driving into wood for climbing purposes, though too heavy to climb very high. The two foremost legs are thicker to allow for burrowing. The mouth is framed by four mandibles with a light carapace plating, capable of finger-like manipulation. Tipped with tooth-ish protrusions. The head is very much like a Tyrannosaurus, though plated with carapace. The species evolved on a high gravity planet, so low-grav environs tend to be extremely uncomfortable.
@Jbcool And here he is. Fair warning to those of you who mentioned elves earlier, his race is based on the nordic version of light elves. What can I say? *shrug* I like to use mythology for inspiration.
Amaranth comes from a race of people where skin pigmentation widely varies, not just relegated to the usual variations of brown white and cream, but also such colors as reds, blues, green, and purples. Even silver or metallic pigmentation. Eye colors are much the same as skin. Amaranth himself, however, has an appearance that is closer to human, but his mismatched gold and violet eyes, pointed canines and slightly pointed ears give him away. As well as his incredible height of six feet, eight inches. His long, straight black hair has nine braids on his dominant right side, while the left has six and it accentuates high cheekbones, strong jawline and slightly crooked nose, and has the same violet tint that his tawny skin does, and his lean frame boasts of broad shoulders, slim hips and sleek muscle. His pupils expand and contract like those of a cat, allowing him to see with very little light.
Amaranth's home planet, Ga'iya, is similar to Earth, but is in much much better shape due to it's inhabitants having a great respect for the flora and fauna, and having a deep connection as well. The connection is so deep that it's genetic, allowing many Ga'iyan's the ability to shapechange into animals native there, or to take on the qualities of stone or bark or some other such thing. Their main, humanoid shapes usually have at least two characteristics of their secondary shapes, like slit pupils, pointed ears, long canine teeth, and sometimes even a tail or gills. Only a few have ever been recorded as having wings in their main shape before. Amaranth's secondary shape is what his people call a Shadowpelt-a huge black cat that's eight feet long and six feet tall. it resembles the Earthen Panther, but unlike that cat, it does not have any of the darker spots. Only a tint to it's fur that matches whatever tint is in the main shape's hair. It's roughly 1200 pounds.
Many of his people are a nomadic, often wandering around Ga'iya, but many who do not like to wander as much as their brothers and sisters keep up the cities and imports, and they have strict rules regarding how one uses what the plants and animals provide. The punishment for breaking one of those rules or many is often harsh, and teaches respect for their home, if not an understanding of what it means to take care of the flora and fauna. Even those who are not nomadic live in tribes or groups, and they have a sort of police force called the Whards, who act much like Rangers do, protecting the forests, animals and natural resources, and bringing any rule breakers to the towns for justice.
Not only do they practice forestry, the have public amphitheaters where they teach fine arts, medicine, mathematics, sciences, weaponry, hand to hand combat and foreign languages. There are many different dialects of the main language of Ga'iya, and Amaranth was always quick at picking them up, often translating for visitors. His mother, seeing his natural talent, sent him to the amphitheaters to learn the different languages of the Empire, though they themselves are not part of it. There, he has learned ten different languages as well as weaponry and combat, both of which he excels at.
The technology on Ga'iya is one of the top kinds, but they don't have cities made of it, preferring to use it to carve homes out of trees, mountains and hardened earth. They use them for weapons and educational tools, especially in the medical realms, and none of them use fire or artificial chemicals, instead using many of the deadly toxins that can be found around almost every corner, which is why they advise visitors not to eat something that they have found unless a guide or host says it is okay to eat. Many a visitor has been found in the paved stone streets, dead, foaming at the mouth, unnaturally blue skinned or having their limbs twisted at impossible angles, all results of eating one of the toxic plants.
Ga'iyans have many traditions such as the belief that all good things come in multiples of three, and many Ga'iyans distinguish their main profession by how many small braids they put into their hair on their dominant side. One braid is a student of the amphitheater, two braids indicate one of the fine arts, which is then distinguished by how many smaller braids that the two main ones divide into, three is a medical professional, four is a scientist, five is a teacher, six is a warrior, seven is a weapons master, eight is a Whard, and nine is a linguist. on their non dominant side, they put their second profession.
Seeing that there was not many things he could do linguistically at home, he left to see what he could do. Not wanting to get stuck in the contracts that so often screw the employee, he sent word out to the mercenary circles that he was a willing fighter and translator looking for work. He also let them know that he was a Ga'iyan capable of turning into a huge cat that could bite someone's head off with little to no effort.
He has heightened senses, agility flexibility and strength, his healing is 3x faster than that of a human, but healing still takes time, and his shadowpelt form has lethally sharp claws and teeth. However, extreme smells, sounds and light can make him feel ill, and his shadowpelt is as prone to injury as his human shape.
@Indy Cooper That is a pretty much perfect sheet, something I rarely see (including in my own writing!) So all I can say is that you and your character are both very welcome to the RP. Feel free to post it up in the Char tab when you like.
@POOHEAD189 and @Tsar Gatto, your sheets are also good to go, so feel free to post them up as well.
@IrishAngelQueen Not sure anyone mentioned Elves And, while some of the profile does seem a wee bit too 'magical' for a sci-fi based RP, I'll allow it, since none of it really defies anything. There's shape-changers in other sci-fi genres, so I can let it slide as long as you don't go overboard with it.
Apart from that, all these sheets look good, can all be posted in the Char tab when you're all ready, and I shall see about getting an initial IC post up within the next few days.
Hello gents. This RP looks like what I have been craving for for a while. I have checked over all the open positions on the ship, but I see a lack of Security post/resident brawler.
@Jbcool Alright, sweet. I did say that the shapechanger ability was genetic, though, did I not? Pretty sure I did. Anyway...I'll Put Amaranth in the Character tab.
On my way home now and gonna polish up the sheet a little more prior to moving him across, but definitely liking the look of the cast coming together.
@Synthorian fairly certain they are indeed as long as they fit the whole theme and whatnot, however our 'mostly human' cast isn't turning out that way - so I'd wait to see what @Jbcool reccomends.
@Tsar Gatto I do have a custom race in mind that would suit this wonderfully. Tylons are soldiers from birth, so seeking war for them is second nature. Money, not so much. They don't understand how virtual numbers or paper notes have any value.
@Jbcool Hi. So I still have a human linguist character from a civilization basically inspired by the Bonfire of the Vanities. I see that role is taken now, perhaps I could rewrite them to fit another role if you're still accepting?
@Iuniper Pretty sure we are? But I'm not in charge, so...
@Synthorian So just, like, love of battle? Mercenary work is definitely the way to go. I don't know the regular armies would like bloodthirst so much as obedience.
@Indy Cooper Exactly that. Their species thrives on war. So mercenary work for them tends to be the best option if they are exiled or if they get bored of civilian life
Not quite sure if I can count this morning (as I am missing my glasses), but it seems there is: a medic, linguist/interpreter, quartermaster, scout (what I seemed to read from Tsar's sheet), and a straight-mercenary. Not sure if engineer and paymaster are still reserved as Jeyma had taken an interest in them.
I think Jeyma is still working on a CS, so until that is up I have no idea which of those roles they'd take. The rest of that count is probably more accurate than anything I'd come up with.
