Sigh meta-gaming... Anytime I want to write a thief, or someone who is up to no good, the other person just magically knows they're somehow not a good person or they have something up their sleeve. Always...

Just make a character who's not actually a thief but acts like they're doing something nefarious all the time or just are always in the wrong place at the wrong time and it makes sense for the rest of their character. OUT GAME THE META GAME

I hate it when people bring up this whole god damn gender issue thing in roleplays, or in games. I don't really care if the character, and or person wants to identify their character as an attack helecopter. Do they want to play as a male, or female character? Anything else can go into personality, and or history sections in roleplays.

I agree to a certain extent, but leave room open for Intersex or Transgender.

@AngelofOctoberAll of that is fair game for their personality, or possibly race. There can be aliens with multiple genders like say Asari from mass effect. I really don't care if a person plays, or is gay/transsexual but Morgol The Eater of Souls is still going to call you 'little boy/girl' when he insults you and is only going to look at you funny if you try to correct him.

I don't think when anybody puts in the gender section male/female, they're specifically trying to exclude those people, just put it in if you need to lol

I just put Sex on my character sheets instead of gender. I'm sympathetic to gender identity and what not, but I also don't know what half the terms are and I kind of feel it can be rather divisive at times if one player is insisting in pronouns that aren't he/ she, and I always worry that there may not be a separation between player character and the player themselves that might cause a bit of conflict between players.

It's just one of those hot button current issues that has to be handled with more tact than I think you're going to find in any particular group, and I like to keep my roleplays separate from current political climates.

For instance, on another site I stumbled across a roleplay that had a premise, and I am not exaggerating, that it was a dystopian future where heterosexual cisgendered whites ruled society and the nation and the player characters were required to be rebels who were ethnic and gender minorities; the GM was not accepting straight or white characters. No idea if that game ever got traction, but it always struck me as a roleplay that was needlessly combative and politically motivated.

A general rule of thumb I have as a GM is to let players make the characters they want to play and help them refine those ideas into something that fits the game. If I were taking that game at face value, I'd kind of expect them to let players play either a character from the villainous group or a sympathizer, ao long as it worked for the group. Personally, I don't see what bearing having a game that emphasizes gender identity or sexual orientation has on like 95% of roleplays unless it's A) a romance game or B) is a game that has a central theme of discrimination, which to be fair seemed to be the case for this example, but it's also an incredibly sensitive topic. There's a comfortable degree of separation between real life and fantasy, so it's one thing about playing something like an elven alienage in Dragon Age as a setting, or a forbidden gay romance in a setting that is against that (say a Game of Thrones RP where nobles are expected to produce heirs) verses something like a game set during the holocaust in real life, or making a game that is inspired by controversial current events. All I'm saying is it's a lot easier to explore heavy and difficult themes if players don't have a personal stake in it or an agenda and the use of methaphorical stand ins verses contemporary things (what sounds easier and less controversial to write about; elven or Jewish genocide at the hands of a dictatorship?).

Ultimately, people write to enjoy themselves, tell a story, and for some people it's escapism. Roleplaying is a bit different than writing a novel because you really have to factor in the fact you're a part of a writing community and with it comes a certain amount of tact. Novels are something that you are only accountable to yourself.

What's up with the majority of new/rarely seen people on the Guild (old account, low post count) becoming self-entitled bastard GMs, and very incompetent ones to boot?

I mean, being a serious/harsh GM is one thing, being a downright idiot who has no respect for anyone/doesn't understand how forum RPing normally works is a completely different story. The worst part is that the Guild is full of them these last few months. I may not be particularly acquainted with some of the older members around here, thanks to my own preferences and style, but at least I feel that there's a sense of respect between the veterans.

These new kids, they just suck...

I don’t know the members you’re mentioning, but here’s my two cents. I was a terrible GM when I started doing my first self-directed role-plays in 2003, full stop. It takes time, effort, and peers to make a person develop as a director and I wasn’t any different. The best thing to consider is most of the people who are new and “bad” will get better through time. You don’t have to help them get better, mind you, but consider what it was like when you started and when you “got good” at the medium and how.

Thank you. I hate it when people use dark colored text. Use the top row of the provided color pallete or something equivalent, or GTFO.

I dislike it in general since I don't see the point of it most times. I always see dialogue being coloured when it's in a block of text, but if you just paragraphed stuff out like you're supposed to (new speaker=new paragraph etc.) then you wouldn't need to use colours.

But yeah, if you're going to use colour, please make sure it can be read without having to highlight the text.

I generally use it for thoughts and dialogue. It doesn't so much make it more legible as just make it a bit more presentable; makes it pop, you might say. I don't have a problem as long as you can actually read it.

I spend several edits making sure the color is legible. I like to use it mostly for headers or to define something that is important.

Most people I think are complimentary colors blind.

I find coloring dialogue/thoughts, especially since I'm mostly an "advanced" roleplayer with humongous post size 99% of the time, a trouble I don't like to go through. I'd still do it if everyone else in the RP is doing that for consistency sake overall; otherwise I'm more than happy not to bother wasting my time coloring dem lines.

Besides, with good paragraphing and sentence structuring, coloring lines is just unnecessary; sometimes it actually makes reading the posts more difficult and distracting.

I didn’t use colored text until I came to RPG. Now I find it a comfortable aesthetic when used and formatted correctly. A lot of people on RPG think colors are an excuse to create technical errors and nonsense that are generally frustrating to read. If you use colors at least know when to hit the fucking enter button. In fact, such lack of use of the enter button is my top grievance with this community.

It's not hard.

As someone who loves to dress up his posts, I have no problem with using colors in my posts. However, I do refrain from using colors for my non-dialogue text. The only exception to this would be using either gray or silver. I'm probably in the minority here, but I find colors gives posts a bit more life. Though, it depends on what RP I'm in. If other people are using colors, then I will approach it like I always have, but if I see no one adding color to their character's dialogue, then I will make that one special exception since I don't want to make my posts stand out(not in that way, at least).

But hey! I'm aesthetic trash, so what do I know?
