It was fairly obvious that Clayton didn't buy that it was 'nothing' or just the runes that Tommy experimented with, if the slight frown on the big man's lips was any indication. He looked down at at his son for a long moment, then, with a nod he gave the boy's shoulder a light squeeze before he reached across the table to pull his own plate over.

"Tell me when you're ready. You're getting near to being a man now, you can fight your own battles. A man knows when to ask for help though, alright? Ain't any shame asking for advice." He resumed his breakfast, carving off a good chunk of pancake and chewing busily. Tommy was still young, but his talent with magic was already impressive, and even The Master had been impressed with his skill at spellbinding. They'd both agreed that he would go on to do great things for the world. That said, Tommy was still a teenager, and had a lot of growing to do before he was ready to start playing the supernatural detective like his father and the rest of The Master's students on his own.

"This weekend, probably. Bodies going missing from the morgue again. Probably some kid at GCU with a grudge trying to make a flesh golem." Early on in his career, Clayton had come to know and loathe Gotham City University as the source of just under half of his late-night strolls. The campus boasted the largest collection of occult works in the United States, at least on the mortal plane of it, and while most of the student body dismissed it as hocus pocus, there were always three or four kids obsessed with it, and it almost always came down to settling grudge with other student.

Think your boyfriend or girlfriend was cheating on you? Send a big hex their way. Your sociology teacher taking their anger out on your grades because you dared to have a different opinion from them? Send a ghost to go torment them at home. This would have normally been harmless, the sort of thing that could easily be explained away by rational people and which Clayton could solve with a stern talking-to with the dumb kid who'd gone screwing around with magic. The problem with GCU, though, was that the students always seemed to insist on using the really big books, the ones way too advance for casual readers, where one wrong word would either result in the spell having absolutely no effect or summoning something hilariously beyond their control.

That was when Clayton had to take more drastic steps.

"Still early, so I doubt they'll have made much progress. I'll let you do most of the fun stuff when we find them." Clayton said with a smirk, knowing Tommy would love the sound of that.

Not waiting for a response, as he doubted whatever manner of beast had caused this would stick around for long, he began to move forward towards the man lying unconscious before him, then took notice to some of the contents of his truck. Even from where he was standing, he could see several firearms, a few of which that were definitely not covered by hunting licences. Ah, Poacher. He thought to himself, a slight snarl forming in his lip as a look of disgust spread across his face, his brow furrowing once more.

Just as he was about to continue hiking and leave nature to determine this man's fate, he heard a sound he was familiar with, the snapping of wood as a tree fell. He turned towards the source of the sound, expecting to see another tree fall. However he was surprised, to say the least, to see that rather than a crumbling tree, an opening forming in a tree's base, with a fairly large being stepping from it.

Shawn watched with a look of near childlike wonder as the being stretched his fingers, displaying a face Shawn had seen many times before, pleasure. As the being introduced himself, Shawn felt a wave of Euphoria as the pills he had taken moments ago began to take hold, and despite the bizarre scene taking place before him, he couldn't help but feel a sense of bliss and comfort. As the Vine Stalker raised the truck and apparent poacher, Shawn's eyes never strayed from the man in front of him, and approached him in awe, and didn't stop to think as words came from his mouth.

"You're breathtaking."

The hiker stared in some strange combination of wonder and bewilderment as Harris introduced himself. Harris would have raised an eyebrow had he any. He noticed the hiker's pinprick pupils and hyperventilation from a quick scan, concluding that he was on some form of drug, though he wasn't a chemist, so he couldn't exactly identify which one.

"My thanks," he offered in response to the man calling him "Breathtaking", he'd never actually seen himself before today, it wasn't as if he had a mirror handy, but the poacher's truck gave him that chance. He wouldn't call himself breathtaking, in fact he'd consider himself hideous, a monster even. He still was far from accepting this new body, and he doubted he'd ever truly be pleased with it. This man however, did see beauty in him, not that his statement was unbiased, what with his altered state.

"I presume you're here to enjoy the sights, but I'd prefer it if you could leave as soon as possible, this forest is a fragile area, and your presence may damage it," he stated, trying to avoid making an overt threat. "Human presence is not necessary or wanted here. I hope you understand."

Tommy waved off his father’s advice, ‘man this, man that, adulting,’ he meant well, but Tommy had his own ideas about what he should be doing, and he knew his limits plenty well, some random dreams weren’t his priority. No, his priority was hitting the swim team hard and fast, so fast Bex wouldn’t be able to rope him into chess club. He didn’t mind GSA, and he found endless amusement in D&D, but chess? He rolled his eyes just thinking about it; that was a dying art, just let it go already.

He was also going to have to see about stirring up some fun on his own, it was only monday, no way was he waiting a whole week for his dad to take him after some grave robbers- though getting off the leash, so to speak, would be fun. Speaking of leashes, he sent a quick text to Pads, he was going to drop by the Stadium after school, that’d be fun. “Cool,” he cheered, his brain already multitasking to envision how the weekend would go down, in addition to planning his schedule for the day. “It’ll be fun- and Dad, first day, y’know? I’ll be late- clubs yeah? Bex is already onto me, and Anna won’t join any unless I talk her into it.” he explained, carefully concealing his secret plans with Pads with his less nefarious plans with Bex and Anna as he shoved a last piece of bacon into his mouth and then darting towards the stairs.

“Oh,” he paused, turning back around, “and next time you smudge my warming rune I’m etching an ice one into your headboard!” He warned, referring to the heating hex he’d placed on the shower, drawn in permanent marker on the shower head, yet somehow always managing to rub off by the time he went to take another shower. He wasn’t a hundred percent sure it was his father, but who else could it be? If there was some kind of magical rat skulking about eating his runes he was going to be pissed.

Regardless of if his father was actually innocent he spun back around and hopped up the stairs to get ready for school.

Shawn gave a soft chuckle as the man before him asked him to leave, a smile playing on his lips, hidden by his thick beard. Looking through the foliage, he shook his head gently. Unbeknownst to his new "companion," Shawn had spent more of his life in the woods then outside of it. Having been raised in a small town just a skip from the base of the Appalachians, he had long had a relationship with the only mother he knew, Nature.

"Friend, I've been a child of the woods long before you became their protector." He stated with a smile.

Moving to stand closely with one of the larger trees nearby, he patted it almost like one would a dog, affectionately, looking up into its high branches. Inside his mind small flashbacks played of the hundreds of times he had performed the same action, his affinity for wood and their domain rivaled nearly all, though he was sure the man before him would prove to be a close competitor.

"And believe me, she's far from frail. Some of these trees have been here longer than this country, and I'm sure they'll far outlive it as well."

He paused for a minute, turning from the tree to the man before him. A tension formed in his voice, not aggression, but apprehension and refusal to the suggestion of leaving the woods.

"Necessity is bullshit. Everything that is meant to be, is.
If you'd prefer I leave I'm afraid I can not accommodate you, there are things waiting for me I'm not going to face just yet."

The Wedge; Hub City

Normally she loved talking about The Vampire Diaries with Clarissa on the way home. It was always a much-welcomed cooldown after a long day at school. As it were, it just served to distract her from the many cuts and bruises she now sported, disinfected and bandaged though they may be. She could still feel them stinging beneath their gauze patches.

“Later, Clare,” Karen waved to her friend as they stepped out of the train station.

“Later…I promise I’ll be there to have your back next time,” Clarissa reassured her, waving over her shoulder.

She would honestly rather there not be a next time. Just being around Kendra always made her day at least thirty-three percent worse than it had been before.

Continuing on her journey home, Karen was happy to see that the streets were fairly quiet this afternoon. After all the gang violence of the previous day, she had half-expected to find the neighborhood even more shot up than usual.

Aside from some homeless folk huddling around a burn barrel for warmth against the increasingly chilled autumn air, she was entirely alone. Now that she thought about it, it was actually kind of eerie here when there was nobody else around, and those hobos were just getting further and further away as she walked.

Pulling her coat closed, she released a visible sigh into the air when she passed by that old broken down bus that had been there for as long as she could remember. She had seen it so many times, and yet had never given it any real thought. All of its windows had been broken out, and an unlit burn barrel sat at its rear. Was it a leftover from back when this place wasn’t quite so bad?

"Huh?" Karen's brow knitted, a familiar yet out of place sound suddenly catching in her ear.

…Laughter.

More specifically, the laughter of children. She could hear them coming from inside…

“W-what the…” Her eyes grew wide as she instinctively backed away from the old bus.

The hiss of its now non-existent door opening now filled the area, the rumble of its engine now being clearly heard on the wind. And the voices….she could hear them so clearly. The children, the bus driver…

Shaking her head in disbelief, she finally regained enough sense to turn and run with every ounce of strength she had. She wasn’t even sure if she was going in the right direction now, all she knew is that her every instinct told her to get away from…from that.

But there seemed to be no escape, no matter how far she ran.

Every sidewalk carried the joy, anger and sorrow of people that were no longer there. Every broken store window told the tale of someone that had met their end. Grasping at her head, Karen dashed into an alleyway, desperately wishing an end to the cacophony of unearthly noise.

“Nnngh...” She pressed her head against the graffiti-ridden wall, her heart about to beat out of her chest. “What…the eff…?”

Her brow was coated in a cold sweat. The sounds were gone now, as if they had never been there to begin with. Had she…just had some kind of episode? Was the stress finally getting to her? Maybe she should forget dinner and just take a long nap when she got home. Her dad would survive.

Pushing herself back from the wall, Karen prepared to exit back onto the street when a startled scream from behind her caused her to freeze in her tracks.

Her first thought was, of course, that her hallucinations had returned…but as she slowly glanced over her shoulder, she bore witness to an old man being backed against the wall at the far end of the alleyway by some thug that looked only a handful of years older than herself. Now that was something she could understand all too clearly.

Taking a few steps closer to the terrified senior and his screaming assailant, Karen instantly felt her heart drop into her stomach when she saw that the mugger was carrying a gun. She had briefly entertained the idea of stepping in to maybe offer a distraction so the geezer could get away, but the gun changed everything. There was literally nothing she could do now.

Pressing the barrel tightly to his victim’s face, the gangbanger demanded his wallet, but the old man stood his ground.

“Just give it up, you wrinkled sack of shit!” The mugger threatened.

The old man still didn’t budge. “I made it through Vietnam and President King. I won’t be intimidated by some wet behind the ears punk like you.”

Karen shook her head in disbelief at the old coot’s stubbornness. Bravery was one thing, but that was just being foolishly prideful. He would just get himself killed at this rate. Didn’t he have children or grandkids that cared about him? What was he even doing here?!

“Last warning you old fuck, hand it over!” The thug snarled, his fist slamming into his gut.

Seeing the geezer double over and begin coughing from the attack, Karen felt herself moving towards the mugger against every ounce of common sense she had.

“Hey, back the hell off!” She shouted, virtually plowing into him with all of her strength. He barely even budged.

Swerving to face her, he stared down with apparent disbelief at the fact that a little girl had just tried to tackle him. She understood the feeling: she could hardly believe it herself. Stupid, so very, very stupid. Moreover, his shock didn’t last long.

“What the fuck? Get out of here, kid!” He barked at her. “You wanna get shot? Huh?”

Seeing him brandish the gun in her direction, she felt her blood chill. She had heard and even occasionally seen plenty of gun violence, but had never had it directed at her before. For the first time in her life, she truly realized that she could very well die in this moment.

“J-just get away from him, asshole!” She demanded, doing her best to look as intimidating as a twelve year old could.

“Hey, what are you doing? She’s just a little girl!” The old man protested, grabbing the mugger by the arm. He responded swiftly by belting him with the handle of his gun, sending the geezer to the ground.

Reacting immediately by grabbing hold of his gun, Karen strained her muscles to their limit in an effort to pry it free from his grasp. The teen resisted her easily with his far superior strength, pulling back on the pistol.

“Let go, you little bitch!” He snapped, their struggle continuing until a thunderous crack filled the alleyway.

Releasing her grip on the gun, Karen fell onto her back. No, it was more like she was blown off her feet. She couldn’t breathe in that moment, and the only thing she could see clearly was the horrified expression of the thug she had just been grappling with. Dropping her gaze, she saw that her shirt was now stained red.

Was that her blood? That was weird, it didn’t hurt at all. She always thought getting shot would hurt.

“No, no, no…FUCK!” The teen grasped his head in a panic, turning to flee despite the old man’s protests.

Crap…she was going to die, wasn’t she? She could feel an irritating heat from where the bullet had hit, now. It was slowly spreading. The old man was kneeling beside her, but it was hard to focus on him. Everything was so hazy.

Maybe if she closed her eyes for just a minute, things would be clearer…

~

Unknown Location; Unknown Time

“Uaaah?!” Karen shot up into a sitting position. Staring ahead in a daze, she slowly reached up to feel her face.

“What…where...” she lifted a hand to needle the center of her forehead, trying to gain some sense of bearing. Let’s see, she went all cray-cray in the street and started hearing voices; then ran into an alley, then decided to wrestle with an armed mugger…

“Oh shit,” she gasped, reaching down to feel her stomach. Her shirt was still wet with blood, but the burning sensation was gone. In fact, so was any evidence of a wound! She was completely uninjured, somehow. “But I know he-”

Wait.

Where the hell was she?

Shifting her gaze to the “world” around her, her jaw dropped. “Stars?!”

Thousands, perhaps millions of stars covered not only the sky above her, but the furthest horizons in any direction she dared to look in. No moon, no familiar smog clouds or light pollution. This wasn’t The Wedge. This wasn’t Hub City.

Lowering her eyes to the “ground”, she quickly noted that it was a solid, polished black. The stars easily reflected off of it, and running her hands across its surface gave her a feeling akin to marble. It also seemed to stretch on forever—or for at least quite a few miles—in all directions.

“Am I…dead?” She muttered, slowly pushing herself to her feet. “Is this some kind of afterlife?”

It was certainly unlike any she had ever heard of. No depiction of Heaven or Hell came even close to resembling this. That meant they were wrong. They were all wrong!

“Hah, suck it, dad! I knew all of that was bullshit!” She grinned.

That was mean, but she was just trying to stay in good spirits. “Pfft, spirits. Guess I am one now, huh?”

“Right, so I’m dead,” she repeated that idea, trying to reinforce it in her mind. “Crap…I’m sorry for saying that, dad. Now you’ve lost both mom and me to shootings.”

Lowering her head, she felt her eyes mist over slightly. As much as she complained about her father being needy, she never wanted him to have to go through something like this again. Karen could only imagine how he was going to take the news.

“All I’ve done lately is complain about him,” Karen muttered.

It was in that moment that a small light appeared on the otherwise immutable black surface. At first merely a single luminous rectangle in the abyss, a second and third were quick to appear. In a matter of seconds, Karen would find herself staring at a string of golden lights that stretched into the horizon. A path.

“Finally, some direction!” She smirked, following her own personal yellow brick road without hesitation.

And so she walked. For nearly ten minutes, in fact. Quietly, diligently, she pressed forward along the trail that had been so generously provided for her. Then she started to run, as her frustration grew, for there seemed to be no effing end to this thing! “Um, hello? Am I actually going anywhere—HUUAAH!“

As she briefly looked up to pose her question to the twilight sky, she felt her foot meet the naked air. Falling forward, she smacked face-first into the lighted pathway. Immediately popping up to grasp her aching nose, Karen glanced about the area. She was still on solid ground, from what she could tell, but behind her-

“A ledge...?” She muttered, peering over the edge. She could clearly see the trail of lights she had just been following, though they quickly began to vanish. It sure felt as if she stepped off a ledge, but now she was looking down it.

Karen shook her head. "Forget it. Just keep following the lights."

It was really the only option she had.

And so many more minutes of walking ensued. Glorious, silent, crushingly dull walking. Wherever she ended up, she would probably be covered in sweat when she finally arrived. Fortunately, she was paying enough attention this time to catch sight of the path abruptly ending at a rectangular alcove.

Unlike the ledge from before, the area she was standing on now continued on past this opening. The lights, however, were clearly directing her to go down into it. Indeed, when she stared down, she could see where the trail continued.

“Okay, so like before?” She questioned to no one in particular. Setting a foot inside the hole, she stumbled forward slightly as the world once again reoriented itself. “Yeah, that’ll take some getting used to.”

She was now standing at the mouth of a rectangular, marble corridor that’s sole lighting was the path before her. This, of course, meant yet more walking!

“Maybe I was wrong,” she considered. “Maybe this is Hell.”

At least she did seem to be going somewhere now. Deeper and deeper, to the point where she could no longer see the stars outside when she looked back. It was at this point, however, that a new light caught her eye: a room!

“Finally!” She exclaimed with a broad grin, charging forward despite her mounting exhaustion.

She emerged into a room that could best be described as resembling some kind of ancient temple, or maybe a museum packed with old artifacts? The floor and walls were still made of the same dark marble-like material, but there were now statues of various mythological creatures—gryphons, centaurs, the standard World of Warcraft crowd—and strange glowing orbs that clung to the walls and illuminated the vast chamber.

“Wowzers…” She muttered.

“Karen Hernandez,” a voice echoed through the room, causing her to yelp in shock, “continue to follow the light.”

"Where-" Her eyes darted about in a brief panic, but there was no one there.

After searching unsuccessfully for the source of the voice, she continued to follow her guiding light. There were hundreds, maybe thousands of bizarre artifacts contained in viewing cases strewn throughout the enormous halls. Statues, suits of armor, weapons and things she couldn’t even begin to speculate on.

“If this really is the afterlife, everyone was way off,” she concluded.

While it probably still took several more minutes of walking, it no longer felt as long thanks to the drastic change of scenery. Thanks to this, Karen was in fairly high spirits when she at last came to the end of her long trail.

She now stood in front of a vast throne made of the same black material as the rest of this place, except there were markings carved throughout it that shimmered with an azure light. More importantly, it was occupied.

“Welcome, Karen Hernandez,” the scrawny geezer spoke, his voice echoing through the chamber. “Your journey is at last at an end.”

Lightning unceasingly crackled through his form, though it didn’t appear to harm him. In his right hand he held a golden staff tipped with the unmistakable symbol of a thunderbolt. Despite sitting in his throne, it was readily apparent that he was far taller than she was. In truth, Karen was scared shitless of this weird-looking old coot, but she wasn’t about to let him know that.

“Well, it’s about time!" She folded her arms. "I feel like I had to walk for an hour or something to get here!”

“A final test,” he explained, “of your patience, of your willingness to confront a potential unknown. You failed the first time, when you fled the broken bus.”

Karen’s jaw went slack at this, her breath stolen for a long moment. “You did that? That was effin’ terrifying! Test my ass, anyone would run from that!”

“The spirits that inhabited that street were very much real, I simply allowed you to hear them,” he explained. “To hear their joy, their sorrow, their dreams, and their regrets. I had hoped it would pique your interest, compel you to delve deeper into what was undoubtedly a mystery.”

“As opposed to nearly pissing my pants?” Karen muttered, before drawing a long sigh. “Look, I know I sometimes act older than I am, but I’m still just a kid. What do you want with me? Who even are you?”

The old man smiled, showing a mouth full of crooked and missing teeth. “I am the Guardian of the Rock of Eternity and last wielder of the primordial arcane from which all magic can trace its roots. I am the wizard…

When he spoke his name, a bolt of lightning arced down to strike the extended palm of his hand, causing Karen to scream and fall onto her rear. The shadows at the edges of the vast hall had been cast aside in that instant, revealing the chambers truly monumental size.

“D-don’t just do that out of nowhere Shazeem, or whatever you said!” She clutched at her chest, her heart about ready to pound right out of it. “And you didn’t answer the most important question! Why am I here?”

Standing from his throne, the incredibly sus old wizard began to slowly descend the steps towards her. Swiftly scrambling to her feet before he could get too close, Karen maintained a healthy distance between them. “I have been observing a myriad of individuals throughout this world in order to judge their worthiness to inherit my power and my throne. Out of all of them, I have chosen you.”

Karen snorted at this, to The Wizards evident surprise. “Now I know you’re screwing with me.”

“You’re saying that you’re going to give all of this to some rando brat from the worst slum in America over literally anyone else in the world? Yeah, swipe left.”

Shazam leaned heavily on the golden staff he carried, closing his eyes. “The primordial arcane cannot be wielded by those without sorcery in their veins. You are no random child, Karen Hernandez. You are what is known in today’s world as a Homo Magi.”

“Homo wah? Sorry, I don’t really think about that stuff. Now, my friend Clarissa…” Karen recalled some of Clare’s more interesting DeviantArt projects.

“…You have the innate ability to wield magic,” he clarified. “A gift that is preciously rare in this modern age.”

She frowned skeptically at this. “You know, I think I might have noticed by now if I could cast spells.”

“Your sorcery is dormant and unrefined,” Shazam explained, a hand stroking his salt pepper beard. “And your potential is mediocre at best.”

Karen’s shoulders sunk a little at this, her arms dropping to her side. “Woah, nice. It’s like if Hagrid was all ‘Yer a Wizard ‘arry, but yer kinda shit at it too!’.”

Releasing a rumbling chuckle that caused the entire room to tremble, Shazam offered her a warm smile. “You need not possess prodigious talent to receive this gift…this burden. No, you were chosen for your benevolent heart.”

“Huh? What do you mean?” Karen tilted her head to the side.

“When you defended your friend at school to your own detriment, I decided it was time to test you, in spite of your youth,” he explained, a bolt of lightning striking out from the tip of his staff, only to shift into a crystal clear image of her “fighting” Kendra.

It then showed her fleeing from the bus. “As I said, it was a test that you failed. I was disheartened by the knowledge that I was once again was unable to find a worthy successor, and my options were dwindling. That was when I witnessed your heroism in the alleyway.”

Karen’s stomach twisted itself into a knot when the image shifted to her confrontation with the mugger. What had she been thinking? “That was really stupid. All I ended up doing was getting myself shot.”

“No,” Shazam countered. “The man you stepped in to save now lives because of your sacrifice.”

His choice of words caused a chill to dart up her spine. “S-sacrifice? Then…I am dead?”

“You were on the precipice of death,” The Wizard corrected her. “I healed your wounds and brought you here before your life could fade entirely.”

Reaching down to run her fingers across where she remembered being shot, Karen averted her eyes from Shazam. “Um…thanks, then. I guess I owe you one.”

Mind you, her gratitude was somewhat tempered by the fact that she wouldn’t have been in that alleyway to begin with if not for his little ghost trick. Then again, that old man would have probably died if she had just gone home.

Gone home…

“Oh crap,” Karen yelped, “How long have I been here? I need to get home before dad gets back!”

“Fear not,” he gently squeezed her shoulder with a weathered hand, Karen having lost her initial aversion to the strange old coot, “time within the Rock of Eternity flows as I see fit. The world outside remains precisely as you left it.”

Her eyes widened at this, her brain taking a moment to fully process what he’d just said. “So wait, you can stop time? And I’m going inherit those powers?”

Okay, she might just be starting to low-key love all of this magic crap.

“By greatly speeding the passage of time within the Rock of Eternity, the mortal plane will be seen to stand still,” Shazam explained. “But you will learn all of this in time. My ten thousand year reign is at last at its end.”

Pointing his staff directly at her, Karen didn’t even have time to scream before she was struck with a blinding flash of light. Staring down in horrified silence as electrical currents coursed through her body, her terror-stricken expression gradually settled when she realized that it didn’t hurt. Rather, in that moment, she felt incredible.

“Savage...” She whispered, staring at her hands.

“It is done,” The Wizard slumped forward, his once golden staff crumbling into dust.

Rushing forward to catch him before he could fully collapse, Karen quickly wrapped his arm over her shoulder. “Woah, take it easy! You look…well, even worse than you did before.”

“The power is yours…” He coughed, his form limp against her. “You need but speak my name with the intent to wield it, and you will become the new guardian of eternity...Lady Arcana. Yes...that is the name the power has drawn forth from your heart...”

His face was going grey at this point, and Karen could feel herself starting to panic again. “Y-you really are looking bad. We need to get you some kind of help or—“

“My time is over,” he interrupted her. “This new age of magic is yours. Protect the Earth and its people…they…”

Karen could only watch helplessly as Shazam’s body withered and became dust just as his staff had moments earlier. Before she could even register that she had just had someone die in her arms, she was once again swallowed by a blinding light.

~

The Wedge; 3:55

“…Guh!” Karen’s eyes shot open with a desperate gasp, the feeling of the cold gravel beneath her a familiar sensation.

“Stay with me, little girl,” the old man from the alley gently cradled her head. “I’ll call an ambulance, so just hold on!”

She could see the familiar grey sky above, could smell the burning rubber in the air. The wall graffiti of a bipedal moose jacking off onto a police cruiser completed the package. She was back in The Wedge.

Had that all been in her head? A fever dream after she was shot?

She quickly reached down to feel where she recalled the bullet striking her.

“Don’t touch it!” The old man snapped, trying to push her hand away.

“…There’s nothing there,” Karen muttered. “It was real...”

She began to laugh, much to the geezer’s apparent concern. Pushing herself up off the ground chilled ground, she broke into a full on cackle. “This is a hundo-effin’-p happening!”

“P-please, you need to lay back down, you’re—“

“I’m fine,” Karen cut him off, reaching down to lift up her shirt. “See? No wound.”

Seeing the old man’s eyes widen into saucers was pretty funny, but she couldn’t really blame him. She would’ve probably reacted the same way in his shoes. Since he seemed at a loss for words in that moment, she took that as an opportunity to pick her backpack up off the ground and start walking away.

“W-w-wait, don’t you want to at least—“

“Stay outta trouble, old man,” Karen waved to him over her shoulder. “The Wedge can be a really strange place.”

~

Home; 4:22

“Expelliarmus!” She jabbed her finger towards the stuffed bear on her bed to no effect. “Damn it.”

For most of the fifteen minutes she had been home, Karen had been giving her newfound magic powers a go. Which is to say she had been posing like an idiot while shouting random TV and movie spells. None of them had yet to work.

She had replaced her bloodied shirt with a clean one by this point, and stuffed it in the washer. The last thing she needed right now was her dad seeing that. Furthermore, she had removed the patches from the nurse’s office to see that all her scratches had been healed as well! Did that mean there was some kind of healing spell she could use?

“Hmm,” Karen scratched at her chin in thought. “Wait, he said I had to do something first to actually use magic, didn’t he? What was it?”

“You need to speak his name with the intent to transform,” Samantha explained while lazily slouched across the dresser in Karen's room.

“Oh right!” Karen snapped her fingers. “Thanks, Sam!”

Samantha. Samantha the cat. They had found her a couple of years ago when she was just a kitten who had been abandoned in the gutter outside their house. She was moody, and ate like a pig despite never gaining much weight. Still, she was a unique part of their family. Unique in that she was a cat and didn’t talk what the actual fuck.

“S-Sam, you talked!” Karen stammered, backing up into her dressing mirror. “Why? Since when?!”

“Since always,” Samantha replied, leaping down to the floor. “I could always talk, I was just ordered to stay silent until now.”

Staring down at her once belovedly silent furbaby, Karen shook her head. “Ordered by who—no, that Wizard?!”

“Shazam, yes,” Samantha confirmed her suspicions. “He has been observing you—and ten other ‘candidates’—for the past two years. I was to integrate with your family and offer you guidance should you be chosen…which you were. So hi!”

Just when she thought the day couldn’t possibly get more screwy, her effin’ cat turned out to be some sort of talking magical spy! She had confided things to her that she wouldn’t dare tell anyone else, under the pretense that she was, y’know, just a cat!

“I know this must be a lot to take in,” Samantha started.

“Aw, nah fam, we tight!” Karen threw her hands up in exasperation. “Thanks for letting me babble on like a moron for the past two years, thinking you couldn’t understand how pathetic I was being.”

“Karen—“

“Don’t ‘Karen’ me! What were you planning to do if I hadn’t been chosen? Just run away without a word?” She stared at the cat accusingly.

Samantha lowered her head. “Whether I stayed or not would have been my choice to make. That was a part of my deal with him. Personally, I would have chosen to stay.”

Karen scoffed at this. “Yeah? Why’s that? The free food?”

"Because while it started as something that was forced upon me, I came to regard you and your father as family,” Samantha looked back up at her.

Clenching her jaw at this, Karen glanced away. “Family doesn’t keep secrets from one another.”

“So do you plan on telling your father about everything that happened, then?”

Karen froze at this.

No. No way was she going to tell him anything about today. He could barely handle the stress of his job as it was. That’s why she hid her bloody shirt. She had never even considered telling him as a possibility.

Slowly turning to face Samantha again, Karen still carried a frown on her face. “…I just say that old Wizard’s name, then?”

“With the intent to transform, yes,” Sam confirmed.

“Fine,” Karen pursed her lips. Facing the dressing mirror, she drew a long breath.

It happened too quickly for her to properly perceive. That same flash of light that the Wizard’s staff had shot into her once again washed over body with a thunderous crack. When she was once again able to see in front of her, the mirror no longer reflected Karen Hernandez.

“Wha...but...I’m...I’m big,” Karen noted, easily able to tell she was taller than before. But that was the least of her changes. “I’m snatched!”

“And you can fly,” Samantha added.

Lightning perpetually coursed through her new body, and she could literally feel the power surging in her muscles. It was like an Adrenalin rush multiplied by a thousand, and in that moment she felt as if she could literally do anything.

“I feel like a Goddess,” she blurted out, only to blink in surprise at her own words. “Erm, okay, narcissist AF, Karen.”

Samantha released a breathy snicker at this. “That feeling isn’t without reason. You have the might of six Gods running through you right now.”

“Six?! S-so what, am I like, possessed?” Karen stared in dumbfounded awe at the black cat.

“No. You are in complete control of your faculties. It is merely their powers that have been copied onto you, just as it was with the Wizard,” Samantha explained.

Staring at her hands again for a moment, she watched the currents of electricity dance between her fingertips. Turning to look at Samantha over her shoulder, Karen grinned. “Which Gods?”

4:48, The Wedge, Spring Grove

Samantha had suggested she wait before putting her powers to the test. Said she needed training, experience with using them.

Karen kind of understood her point after a failed attempt at flying. Said attempt had ended with her taking a face-dive into the brick wall of the alley behind her house, with the wall coming out far worse for it.

So maybe flying could wait...

But come on! How could she not at least pay a visit to the guy who shot her? It wasn’t like she was going to badly hurt him or anything, just scare him into thinking twice before he tried to mug someone again.

She recognized his colors. He was one of the Spring Grove Boys.

She had never entered Spring Grove herself before, so this area was unfamiliar to her.

Her outfit would naturally make her stick out in The Wedge, or well, anywhere, really…so to remedy that, she had taken one of her mother’s old hooded long coats. It was in-season, and so it made her look mostly normal…though the bust and hips were really tight, while the waist was loose.

Sorry, mom.

An unfamiliar young woman walking alone in Spring Grove was likely to find only the very worst kind of trouble. It was something Karen would never even think to do before today. But now things were different. Now she felt untouchable.

The hard part was finding the mugger. He could be anywhere in this rundown neighborhood. She didn’t even have a name, but she could at least recall his face. To a slightly disturbing degree, in fact, as if she was seeing a photograph of him in her mind. Apparently that was one of the abilities given to her by the goddess Mnemosyne

Maybe asking someone was the best solution, one of the Spring Grove Boys.

That was a lot easier to do, after all: she just had to follow the sound of the music.

Indeed, soon enough she was standing in the driveway of a ramshackle house with three members of SGB huddled around an Audi. It didn’t take long for them to notice her.

“Damn,” one member of the trio stood, eyeing her from head to toe. “Haven’t seen you ‘round here before, baby. You lost?”

“Nah, I’m looking for someone,” Karen explained.

“Well you found ‘em,” he grinned, sliding an arm around her waist.

Suppressing her unease, she continued. “He has stringy blond hair, green eyes, scar on his left cheek. You seen him?”

“Baby, don’t worry about him,” his hand slid down to her hip, his two friends now sharing his lurid smile. “We got all you need right here.”

Karen finally smirked at this, her eyes shifting to the Audi. “Is that your car?”

“Ayy, fuck yeah it is. You wanna go for a ride?” His face seemed to glow with excitement at her apparent show of interest.

“No,” she replied, smashing her open palm down onto the hood. The Audi was immediately slammed down into the pavement of the driveway, three of its wheels popping off and rolling to the side. For a brief moment the car alarm went off, only to quickly die with a defeated groan.

“What the fuck?!” The thug staggered away from her, reaching into his over shirt pocket for a gun.

Lashing out to seize the pistol before he could even properly aim it, she crushed the cylinder and any bullets inside as if they were made of thin paper. Releasing his grip on the weapon with a scream, he turned to flee only for her to grasp the back of his shirt and throw him to the pavement.

Placing her foot on top of his chest to keep him from moving, she narrowed her eyes at him. “Where is he?”

“You fuckin’ bitch!” One of his friends came up from behind her, smashing a wooden bat over her head. Turning to glare at him, she simply raised her hand and gave him a slight smack across the face. Well, it felt slight to her at least.

The resulting crack was reminiscent of a gunshot, the thug spiraling through the air and into the side of the house, caving in the vinyl siding before falling to the ground. A small pool of blood began swelling beneath his face, causing Karen’s heart to drop into her stomach.

“I—“ Karen’s jaw fell slack. “I didn’t mean to hit him that hard...”

The remaining gangster was already running down the street, paying no mind to the fate of his pals, and leaving her alone with the man she still had trapped underfoot.

“H-hey, be cool sis, don’t hurt me!” He held his hands out to the side. “T-that guy you were talking about, his name’s Lenny Wilkes, but everybody calls him ‘Scabs’ because he’s got—“ he seemed to think better of continuing that line of conversation, “well, that’s what we call em’.”

Lifting her foot from his chest, Karen quickly turned without another word to check on the man she had struck. Placing a pair of fingers to his neck, she was thankfully able to feel a pulse. Gently picking him up off the ground, the other thug looked on in confusion but dared not offer a word of protest as she left with his friend.

Home; 5:28

“So you didn’t find him?” Samantha questioned her, the cat’s tail wrapping around her body as she sat on the kitchen floor.

Karen shook her head. “I know his name, but...well, after I ended up hurting that guy, I just focused on getting him to the hospital. I’m honestly just glad I didn’t end up killing someone.”

“That’s why I said you needed training, Karen,” Samantha admonished her. She then exhaled, a strange motion to see from a cat. “Well, hopefully you’ll listen to me now. That is why I’m here, after all, to help you learn how to wield your powers.”

Resting her face on one hand, Karen—having returned to her normal self—nodded slowly. “Fine, alright. I guess since I’m Sailor Moon now, I should listen to my cat.”

“Good,” Sam smiled...or at least Karen got the impression she was. Her mouth didn’t really work like that. “We’ll start tomorrow. After your day, you could really use a rest.”

Karen snickered at this, nodding. “RT.”

Wait. Wasn’t there something she was forgetting?

“Aw, crap! I haven’t even gotten started on supper! Dad’ll be home in less than half an hour!”

The month of November would then pass in apparent silence, with the world—on the surface—continuing with its mundane existence. But to those attuned to the forces of magic, they would have already noticed a dramatic change.

The laylines had been flooded with arcane energies once more. Spells that once took days or even months of preparation could now be cast in moments by those possessing the correct skills. The Magi, whose magic worked through the subtle manipulation of the trace amounts of magic left in the world around them, would find that their unique abilities now granted them a potential that far outstripped any firearm.

And within the shadows, old and horrible things not seen since time immemorial began to stir...their intent for mankind yet unknown.

Harris sadly shook his head as the man's refusal to leave, yes the forest seemed hardy, but humans are good at ruining such things, a single dropped object could have ramifications for the entire ecosystem. If this man refused to leave, he'd be forced to.

"I care not about your life, I care not about your opinions, all I care about is this forest, and your insistence in remaining has made it ever so clear that you lack this care," he stated firmly, clenching his fists and letting out a soft cracking like that of a falling tree. "Leave now, or you shall face nature's wrath!"

He roared intimidatingly, and the forest began to shake, the very ground shuddered as the trees began to twist and move of their own accord. A pair of wings spontaneously appeared from Harris' back, and with a single flap he took to the air, staring down at the hiker.

"This is your last chance," he called down. "Comply or be forced to!"

A ring of trees sprung up around the hiker's position, with one gap behind him to allow him to leave should he choose to. Harris really didn't wish to do this, but if he had no choice, he would do whatever was necessary to protect the forest.

Send him out

Show no mercy

He's dangerous

Whispers shot through Harris' head, those of nature itself, demanding he either kill or neutralize the man, he had no choice but to listen, no matter how much he wished he could solve this peacefully.

12 AM
November 30th
Industrial District; Hub City

A soft yellow light rested over the old factory as it lightly creaked in the night wind. The gathered men sat quietly as the masked man took to the front of the room, draped in a black cloak and emblazoned with images of eagles and swastikas. He slowly raised his arms at his sides, drawing a low hum from the mouths of those in the rafters, hiding above, rested upon metal beams and plying their trade, the songs of the German people. When the cloaked man's hands reached vertical positions above his head, the singer's voices reached an intense crescendo, echoing through the almost empty building and leaving many in the audience in a state of blissful confusion.

Finally the cloaked man lowered his arms and the singing stopped, all of the lights turning off as their voices had.

"Long ago we were strong. A people united in common love for our ideals, we to bring an end to the age of empires, an end of the inferior beings that still brought scorn upon humanity. Then our guide was slain, brutally murdered by what these Americans called 'heroes'! We were brought down, turned weak. They turned us against a common foe to keep us weak, contained, but the spirit of Germania cannot be held in a cage, neither can that of its people! I am evidence of that, thought slain, I only grow stronger with time, as does my love for my country!" Wilhelm roared to the gathered crowd, who screeched and clapped in agreement. Holding tattooed hands to their hearts and smashing at their chests. The lights shot back on, revealing Wilhelm, hands folded behind his back, staring over the room in gratitude and glee.

Wilhelm was immensely pleased, everyone in the room shared his beliefs, his love for the Aryan people, and their hatred for those who usurped their freedom. Wilhelm had thought their spirit dead, but truly nothing could kill a love for the great Reich and what it stood for. The fuhrer had always said that killing him wouldn't kill the ideal, and he was right, his ideals lived on in his people's hearts.

"So, will you allow yourselves to be silenced by the capitalist hell we are forced to live in? Or will you act as your forebears would? Strong and uncompromising in your path, moving forwards no matter the challenge? I will not back down from any challenge, as long as at the end of it stands a chance at bringing back the paradise that our leader had wished for! No sadness, no pain, only love for what we are, what brought us there, and where we're going! National socialism isn't a political position, it's an ideal, one that we all stand for!

"I have been burned, shot, brutalized and tortured in the service of my country, and I would do it all again just for a chance to see that flag once again fly over my homeland! So grab your weapons, grab your guns, blades, bats, whatever is necessary, and wreak havoc on these lesser peoples! From this day forward, no man in Hub City is safe, no woman or child, we will slay as many as necessary to seize control and establish a new home for the Aryan people!

"And if the vigilante, Question I think he is called, if he dares stand in your way, beat him within an inch of his life and toss him at my feet! No fool stands in my way if he appreciates his life, teach them that. Teach them that never again shall the German people be weak, never again shall Aryans be dominated by a lesser race, and never again shall raise a country that may challenge the greatness of our new German Reich!"

Wilhelm clicked his heels and lead the people in one final salute, bellowing out one last word that shook the very building to its core.

The Wanderer

Shawn shook his head, gazing up to the man now flying several feet above his head, a look of childlike sorrow. Even now, all he could see was beauty in the denizen threatening to force him out. Shawn had spent his entire life wishing for the forest to speak with him, and now he faced that wish, only to see it rejecting him as if he had never known or loved his domain. He nearly felt tears flooding his eyes, but he held true to his now-turned stoney expression. Don't shun me, please.

Looking down he clenched his right hand into a fist, not out of aggresion, but an almost overwhelming feeling of abandonment. Then, suddenly, he felt a sensation that was similar to feeling an invisible rope tug on his chest. Visible only to him, he saw a shimmering, near transparant trail move from his chest like a tendril, connecting to the chest of the flying man before him.

Harris

Harris looked down on the hiker waiting for him to make his decision, leave or fight. He was hoping the former, though he wasn't opposed to being forced to fight. He then noticed a small glimmer near the man's eye and his brow furrowed in confusion, it was almost as if there was some magical change in the man; he felt nature itself tense, and the whispering in his head halted.

He felt a sudden sense of familiarity with the man, weakly, as if they'd met before. He found himself struggling to maintain his composure, and he had to mentally convince himself to keep on the same path, and he could barely manage to convince himself that he could hurt this man, this hiker who he'd just met.

This feeling only got stronger and stronger, like they were old friends, like they'd known each-other far longer than Harris had been in his new form. He hesitated, struggling with himself, he kept telling himself it was preposterous, this was his new reality, stop men from harming nature, and yet one of the first times he had to do so, he couldn't. The ring of trees surrounding Shawn crumbled as Harris finally gave up his resolve, his wings doing the same. Harris landed on the ground with a loud thump, head down and staring into his hand.

"What just happened?" he questioned softly.

The Wanderer

Shawn watched the man before him, his eyes switching back and forth from the tendril in his chest to his furrowing brow. He seemed to be having some sort of internal conflict, and Shawn could recognise the emotions displayed on the mans face from having experianced it many times himself. He knew from the tone of aggresion in is voice earlier, the man intended to remove him, forcefully if neccesary, from a place he had known to be his home.

However the man before him seemed to have a change of heart, and Shawn felt a surge of relief as the trees surrounding him crumbled, and the man landed, staring at his hand. "What just happened? he asked himself internly, almost in unison with the man before him.

Stepping forward, Shawn looked to the ground for a moment, before looking into the man's eyes and speaking.

"I'm sorry, if I seemed to be a threat or upset you. I'm Shawn."

Harris

Harris turned up his chin as Shawn approached, intrigued and bewildered. There was something strange about this man, he wasn't sure what, but it was clear to Harris that he was more than normal. Harris pushed himself from the crouch he had landed in, stretching his shoulders back and scowling.

"Not necessary, Shawn, I am the one who must apologize," Harris responded, noticing that the man seemed just as confused as he. Harris flexed his fingers and looked to the sky, "I suppose I may as well give you my true name as well. I am Harris Herzog, or at least... I was," he said, punctuating his statement by looking into the palms of his hands.

He pulled up a corner of his mouth as he thought, "Perhaps you've seen a missing person's poster or a newspaper article about me, not that there's anyone who'd care enough to call the police about my whereabouts."

Harris bitterly chuckled. "Of course I have no wish to go back to civilization looking like this, and I was beseeched by either a hallucination or the spirit of the planet to defend all nature."

"It is for this reason that I was so quick to threaten you earlier, for which I again apologize," he offered, closing his eyes and giving a soft frown. "I have little to offer you in return for leaving, but I would still appreciate it, I'm not... a fan, I suppose the best term would be, of other people, especially since..." He again looked at his hands.

The Wanderer

Shawn watched Harris as he spoke, sensing his apprehension and insecurity, stepping forward again, he did something he rarely did, and embraced the man before him.

"You are still Harris, and you are still worth care and kin." He said softly, before letting go of Harris and stepping back, regaining his compusure.

"And you aren't the only one hiding out here to avoid people, nor are you the only one who isn't a fan of their prescence." He paused for a moment, before continuing with a small smile.
"If you're meant to be the protecter of nature, then perhaps you should start small. I intend no harm to this place, but it could be a chance for you to train yourself up. I doubt some companionship will do you harm."

Harris

Harris did not expect any of this. The shock of Shawn's hug left him standing awkwardly, with his hands held out in front of him. He was unsure as to what they should be doing, so he slowly lowered them to his sides. When Shawn told him that his identity was not yet lost, and that he was still worth human attention, it was almost too much for him to bear. Harris's eyelids flickered like a dying light as he desperately attempted to stop himself from crying.

Harris' mouth was stuck in a perpetual state of confused open-ness, and he had to shake his head to snap out of the confused trance he found himself in and close it. Harris listened as the man suggested that they be companions. Harris found himself unopposed to this idea, despite his usual hatred of company and fear of others' thoughts. His eyes darted around in his head as he attempted to think, letting out a few primal sounds as he did so.

Finally he collected himself and sighed.

"Perhaps you're correct, I've been alone for half a year, with nothing but the trees to keep myself company. I'd resorted to writing a journal in an attempt to keep myself from going insane."

Harris found himself unable to not chuckle at that statement.

"I always thought that people would shun me for what I've become, but you've proven me quite wrong, and I am truly thankful for that."

Harris smiled then, perhaps the first time he'd truly smiled since his transformation. He approached Shawn and offered a hand.

"If we are to be companions, then I must be able to shake your hand at the very least," he japed, feeling open, almost happy for the first time in months. He gave a toothless smile, revealing his mouth to be not full of teeth, but with hardened plant matter, connected to each jaw in an almost tooth-like manner, but without individual divisions, they were just singular "teeth".

The Wanderer

Shawn smiled through his beard, chuckling as he took Harris' hand.
"I'm always happy to prove someone wrong about their fears."

After the speedbag, it was a full circuit rotation: jump rope, mittens, 100 sits ups 100 push ups, chin ups, heavybag, squats, knees to elbows, laps around the gym. Repeat. Since becoming the champion of the Middleweight division barely three weeks earlier, his training had intensified sevenfold. Unlike past champions, and unlike many of his peers, Hayes hadn't been part of the public eye. Aside from immediate post-fight interviews following his KO over Chris Ives, Hayes had gone completely silent which was uncharacteristic of the man who's mouth was near big as his left hook. He had another fight coming up February-- a mandatory defense against the No. 1 contender, Jerome Whittaker: someone who was fast as Hayes and the best counter-puncher in the division. Odds were in Whittaker's favor 9:1. Hayes only hoped he would be around long enough to see the day when it came.

While Marvin worked on the heavybag, the gym's proprietor of 25 years--Archie "Uncle Red" Gaines, a creole man and New Orleans native who, for as long as Marvin could remember, had no variance in fashion and often dressed in soft tan silk shirts and sharply pressed slacks, watched his third pupil work on the bag from afar. Uncle Red, who was blind in one eye, felt it a good time to antagonize the first champion his small gym ever had. Unaware of Archie's approach, Marvin continued hammering the side of the bag at different angles and he threw each new punch while acquiring a new position whenever he loaded up to spring the hook into the bag. The heavybag's chain rattled with a persistent iambic beat in tune with the sequence of Hayes' punches.

Archie made his approach and sauntered to the back of the bag where his wrinkled hands held each side of the bag as Marvin hit it.

"Mo' smack in that thang, babeh", Archie rifled off in hard Louisiana drawl.
"I can't go no harder, Red! All'ese workouts killin' me!" Hayes retorted.
"I used to wrassle big ass thuteen foot alligatas, you gon' sit up in my yell'ass face an' tell me you can't punch a muhfuckin' heavybag wit' a li'l mo' pop? Soun' like ya bullshittin', nigga." Red doused Hayes' rebellious flame.

Marvin gave one final heave into the bag's side, enough power to snap the entire heavybag from its hanged position. Both Hayes and Gaines went eyes wide! Either Uncle Red's stringent training regimen was beginning to pay off, or the strange tingling in his body was indicative of something else. It was probably the former.

"Well gahtdammit boy, y'un got a good ole thang neh", one could feel pride's pulse against Red's golden-yellow teeth. Marin stroked sweat from his forehead. His hands were still fitted with white tape, his hoodie soaked in sweat.

"Think I'm gon' hit the showers and get on up outta here, Unc'."
"You be safe out deh, bo'" Red's reply was riddled with worry, though he seldom expressed such a feeling. He was a man of a different time, where a man had to handle his problems with stoic silence and closed fists.

Marvin left the gym, drenched hoodie and all and headed to a hole-in-the-wall diner. Luckily, not many people frequented this old and rugged retro diner much anymore. It was the perfect place for a mild celebrity like Hayes to eat and relax.

Until the black vans pulled up outside.

NO!

She screamed in her mind against the voice taking residency. It never shut up when she started simple robberies.

fly. fly. fly. fly. fly. fly. fly.

It was like a command prompt that kept running around her mind. She was already running as fast her legs would carry her, but the stupid sentient stone on her back would never stop trying to coerce her into drawing on it's power. She always refused, and not was no different than before.

It was petty theft, unarmed robbery. Using a cloth mask to cover her face, Patricia had walked into a gas station and promptly punched out the cashier, and had used a nearby stapler to bash the cash register open. Brute force and a still object were all that she needed to get some cash. Nothing new. Only two people were inside at the time, so she wasn't too worried about civilian involvement.

She shoved the money into the pockets of her plain black jacket and took off once more. However, things turned interesting.

Bang!

With wide eyes, Patricia looked back at the gas station with wide eyes, staring at the angry man shouting and waving around a gun in his hands. He couldn't be serious! He was actually trying to gun her down! Not even the police had opened fire on her before!

Too wild, and the Scarab's commands screamed louder in her head. She shook her head to free herself of it's thoughts. She couldn't stop now. He didn't seem to be giving chase, but plenty onlookers were calling the cops to let them know about the robbery.

She refused to stop. She needed to get away. Amnesty bay was just large enough of a small city for her to be able to hide and change out of her robbery clothes scott free. She just needed to get away and lay low.

Echo

Something was very wrong here. Ezra knew it the second he turned down the alley behind the The Small, the one that led to the unfinished subway entrance and the secret door to the alien bar. It felt like eyes were on him, a predator lurking around the corner, ready to catch him in it’s web and burn him up like a halsa’s favourite snack. It was not a pleasant feeling, and he slowed his steps as the tension mounted. He almost shrugged it off, putting it towards a return in his paranoia, which had begun to taper off over the last month, having gotten used to Jessie’s motor mouth, Yoski’s jokes about whatever was on TV, Benji’s frequent messages about new safe spaces he’d found as he moved across the country, and Lauren’s comforting smile and no-nonsense mothering she applied to everyone she met…

But he didn’t shrug it off, because there was blood in the alley way. Blue blood. Alien blood. He quickened his steps, gripping tightly to the straps of his backpack and pulling his beanie further down his face, hiding his white hair. Oh no, he thought worriedly, what happened? Is someone hurt? Were we discovered? He hurried down the steps into the subway entrance and froze at the sight that greeted him; the walls were smeared with dark blue blood, and the gory remains of a familiar yellowish-green alien, torn tentacles and mushed brain matter scattered outside the door, which had been forcibly pried open and now hung from it’s hinges awkwardly.

He didn’t bother checking on him, Yoski was definitely dead, and there were sounds coming from within the now revealed bar. He almost didn’t notice the burning green energy that gathered in his fists or burned within his eyes as he stepped faster towards the door, entering the dimly lit room. The one safe place for people like him, and now it was exposed, violated- invaded.

There were people within, and bodies. There was a dark skinned man dressed unsurprisingly in a dark suit and very clearly armed, and there were two light skinned men in unassuming hoodies and caps, looking like standard pedestrians he’d see on the street. They looked up at him as he entered, immediately going for their guns- but they didn’t get the chance. Ezra saw Lauren, and Kyle, slumped over together in a corner, they were whole, unlike Yoski, but lifeless. Ezra threw his ecto-blasts before he’d even fully comprehended their deaths. “You killed them?!” He cried out, he’d intended the words to be angry, but instead they were shocked, still reeling from the scene he’d barely had a chance to process.

One of the plain clothes men ducked behind one of the many upturned tables even as the other went down from a solid blast to the face. The man in the suit raised his gun and fired three times, each managing to hit Ezra in the chest. Overall the entire encounter took maybe three seconds at most, but while the men went to check on their fallen comrade, assuming by the lack of moving, or even breathing, that Ezra was dead, he instead was already beginning to regenerate the wounds to his form and recover from the shocking pain. After a moment of his vision spinning riotously, he simply vanished, turning intangible and invisible.

When he reappeared, leaking neon green blood from the still closing bullet wounds, he was behind the men, and absolutely furious. This time when he threw his energy attacks they caught the men off guard and were thrown to the ground without cover. He threw a few more even after they stopped moving, but managed to repress his emotions enough to stop attacking. Eventually. Even as tears were gathering his eyes, grief pushing past the rage, he knelt down and dug through the suited man’s pockets. He needed to know who had done this, and why.

He managed to get the man’s wallet, but before he could open it someone else charged into the room, a dark skinned woman with her sidearm already drawn and pointed at his head. He threw a bright green burst of energy directly at her face, turning invisible and intangible as she fired her gun. If backup was already arriving he needed to get out, now. He flew through the roof, managing to get up into the alley above in time for his stress-induced lack of focus to force him to become visible and tangible again. A pain shot through his chest as he leaned against the alley wall for support, and he saw a large hole punctured straight over where his heart would be- an energy weapon, the woman had shot him with an energy weapon.

Luckily he didn’t have a heart, or he’d be dead now. He started running, hearing boots pounding towards him from the subway entrance. Who were these people? How did they get energy weapons on Earth? How’d they find this place? Why were they killing aliens?

It was late, and Coast City was no New york, no Metropolis, but it was very big and very busy. His disguise was ruined, his eyes aglow in the rapidly approaching darkness, leaking more glowing blood from the four holes in his chest, and somehow he’d lost his beanie, revealing stark white hair to every pedestrian he pushed past. He could hear someone running after him, and he threw a glance over his shoulder to see the woman who shot him racing full tilt after him. He waited until he ploughed ahead through a street crossing, not bothering to even look for cars, and then threw an ectoblast over his shoulder, causing the woman to shout and jump out of the way as it landed at her feet. The street shortly erupted in a round of screams as pedestrians scattered in all directions. Ezra used the chaos to run straight through a building and escape to a new street, jumping into the air to get further away. The pedestrians were too distracted by the commotion to look up as he flew quick and fast towards his apartment.

Once he finally set down on the roof of Satomi Towers, he collapsed, clutching a wallet in his hands and breathing hard. He forced himself to focus on the wallet, to calm down, and study the information within. He wasn’t surprised by what he found, all his fears proving true; a symbol, an eagle- how American - overlaid on an ID. DEO. DEPARTMENT OF EXTRANORMAL OPERATIONS. Agent Hamilton. He sneered, Humans! he thought, a viciousness and resentment attached to their name he hadn’t felt before. The government did this? Of course they did, there was a reason there were a billion movies painting aliens as the bad guys, why they were always being dissected and hunted down by government agents. Because it was true.

He looked around, feeling… lost, angry… afraid.

He couldn’t do this alone.

He called in sick today. Well, he called in something. He’d been very evasive but also very tired and wretched feeling when he’d talked to his manager, something the man seemed to pick up on and let him go without too much fuss.

There was nothing in the news about Yoski, Lauren, or Kyle, or about any aliens at all, which was expected, but even his mad dash through a crowd of pedestrians and blatant use of powers refused to show up. On the TV anyway, in his ‘trending in your area’ feed he managed to find a few conversations had about that ‘glowy green dude that got chased through the street.’ Already those posts were getting random bloggers asking questions and scratching their heads. Mostly there seemed to be a lot of confusion, disbelief, and general indifference. No one seemed to have gotten a video or picture of him, yet anyway, he hoped he hadn’t run in front of a traffic camera or past a store’s security camera, and it had happened very quickly, so it was unlikely to catch anyone’s attention unless they were looking for it. Good.

He’d already redyed his hair, dug up his old pair of hipster square glasses he’d first worn when blending in on this planet, and thoroughly locked himself in his one room apartment where no one could find him. He probably wasn’t going to come out ever again.

A thought occurred to him suddenly; he should get the word out. His phone was already in hand, and he snapped a quick picture of the government agent’s ID. He sent it, and a text message, to Benji. People had to know they were actually being hunted, it wasn’t paranoia anymore, it wasn’t enough to trust no one was looking now, they had to be on their guard.

He lingered a moment on Jessie’s name, Jessie Beedle just above Benjamin Bello in his contacts list. After some hesitation, some thought, he sent her a text: won’t make it to gym today, not feeling well - better than just dropping off the face of the world with no warning, the energetic woman might come looking for him if he wasn’t where she thought he was supposed to be.

Putting it out of his mind for the moment, mostly because he didn’t want to think about how she was human and thus likely to run screaming from him, turn him into the government, or beat him up with a bat- or all three, he refocused on more important things.

He needed his people’s technology, he’d held off because he got comfortable, because the tech was complicated and dangerous… he couldn’t wait anymore. So, heavy hearted but determined, he went to the roof, slipped into the small shed, and began tinkering in the faint green-tinted light of the life pod.

The Wedge; Macaulay Drive

"P-please don't hurt me, please," the woman begged, tears flowing freely down her cheeks.

"C'mon now, baby, you're gonna love this," the thug grinned to the woman as she was held in place by two of his buddies. Pressing his switchblade to her cheek, he drew close enough that she could surely smell his breath. "Unless, of course, you make things difficult."

There were six of them in all, not counting their would-be victim. The blind alleyway was narrow and ended abruptly after the first turn, the buildings it once serviced mostly acting as places for the homeless to squat in now. The 4th Street Crew had been trying to move in on Macaulay Drive for the past couple of months, and the people there had been suffering their presence ever since. She would ensure they didn't have to suffer it for long.

"Hey guys," she called out from the entrance of the alley, "why don't you come play with me instead?"

Collectively turning at the sound of her voice, the thugs stood in silence for only a moment before they recognized her red longcoat. Before the first one could even complete his reactionary swear, she delivered a palm strike to his chin that lifted him clear off his feet and left him to fall into a cluster of wooden pallets off to the side.

Good, her coat didn't tear this time; that meant she had put the correct amount of force into her blow. The palm strike was also proving useful; thanks, youtube.

Two of them now tried to come at her from the sides, but she was quick - impossibly so - to issue them both a hook to the jaw that blasted the pair into the wall. Still no tearing. A shadow now swept over her, the largest of the group having opted to circle around behind her while the previous two were attacking. Allowing him to place her into a full nelson, she responded by ever-so-slightly jerking her head back into his face, thoroughly smashing his nose and sending him to the ground.

The next one had a gun, so he was a little more certain of his chances. They hadn't figured out that they were useless against her yet, which wasn't a bad thing. Lashing out to crush the cylinder of the gun, she followed up by palm-striking him in his sternum, his eyes rolling back as he impacted the wall.

Only one now remained, and he was doing the predictable thing: using the woman as a hostage.

"S-stay back, freak! I'll slit the bitch's throat!" He warned her, pressing his knife tightly against her neck. She was, understandably, trembling with fear. A sudden, reflexive jerk might cause him to cut her. Better wrap this up quickly.

Once more dashing forward in a blur, she pinched the blade of the knife between her thumb and index finger. She instantly felt him trying to draw it back against the lady's neck once he realized what had happened, but it wouldn't budge even a millimeter. A quick twist later, and blade was detached from hilt.

"Wah?! B-but that's-"

She palmed his face into the back wall, stealing his consciousness. "Impossible? Astonishing? Miraculous? I'll gladly accept any of those labels!"

That was six out of six. No tears in the coat, so no excessive injuries.

Her mom's coat was still just as tight on her, but that turns out to have been a blessing in disguise: it forced her to be extremely precise and subtle with her movements to avoid ripping it to pieces. She'd noticed the seams were torn after her first outing, and Samantha had insisted she wear it ever since.

Turning to the woman, who seemed to still be trying to process what had just happened, Karen offered her the most comforting smile she could manage. "Hey miss, are you alright? They didn't manage to hurt you, did they?"

"I..." she choked, slowly raising her cuff to dry her eyes. "I don't think so..."

"Come on, then," Karen extended her hand, "let's get you to a shelter."

Harris

The last month had been far more interesting than Harris could have anticipated, he and Shawn had grown far closer than he thought they would. It wasn't as if they had shared much, but Harris had grown to trust him, and he enjoyed his company far more than that of the trees.

Harris looked over Hope Springs, snow resting on the roofs and still falling, blanketing the landscape. The formerly all-encompassing sound of wildlife had gone silent, except for a singular bird every hour or so. Harris had found himself unable to avoid becoming covered, a fate Shawn did not share due to the impromptu shelter Harris had constructed from the ground up. Harris found himself unable to care about the snow, it didn't affect him anymore.

Harris turned back to Shawn.

"So, you're the boss, where should we go today?" he asked with a small smirk.

The Wanderer

"You know, for a genius, it probably wasn't your smartest move putting me in charge."

He said sarcastically, a smirk finding it's way onto his face, although masked by the significantly larger beard. He had learned a lot about the man he now considered to be his closest friend, and was happy that Harris was willing to put up with him and his affinity for opiates, going as far as to provide him with Papaver Somniferum, allowing him to have near unlimited access to fresh opium latex. Shawn had also used some of his woodworking skills to carve himself a pipe suited to using opium in.

"I think it may be time for us to move on friend."

He stated, lifting a cigarette to his mouth and lighting it. As he did so, he caught a glimpse of the transparant cord connecting himself to Harris, and felt a feeling of warmth spread throughout his body. Having had over a month to discover what it was, he had learned that Harris wasn't the only gifted being amongst them. After a lot of trial and error, he had found that he was able to make both people and animals fond of him. Incredibly so, it was more than once that he had come back to their home looking like a fantasy princess, with dozens of animals behind him. Through his training, he had learned that it's effect were not permanet, and would fade away if he put a distance of about 30 yards between himself and his "target." However despite this, the link between himself and Harris had never disappeared, even after Shawn had traveled over two miles to test it.

Shawn had grown restless in the past week or so, his innate urge to stay on the move had become overwhelming, even with his bond with Harris. He knew that he had to start moving again, but he also knew that he couldn't leave Harris, even without his fear of withdrawals, it would destroy him to be absent from his friend's side.

Harris

Harris chuckled in response to Shawn's jape, primed and ready to respond in an equally snarky way, only to hesitate when Shawn continued. His face shifted from a smile to a confused frown. He turned towards Shawn as he lit a cigarette, looking into his face in an attempt to discern more meaning from the statement. He had no clue what was meant by his statement, and his mind kept telling him to assume the worst, that Shawn was suggesting they split up and move on. Despite only knowing each-other for a short time, Harris couldn't help but feel his stomach drop in fear and anxiety at the thought of being forced to part ways with the man, he felt a strong connection, far stronger than even that which he had shared with his family, and the thought of losing that was almost too much.

"Please don't tell me that means what I think it means," he pleaded in a combination of sadness and stern anger. "I... we've been through so much, even in such a short time, I can't help but feel like this is it, I'll never get to interact with a person ever again."

He looked at Shawn, feeling angry yes, but mostly terrified.

"I was alone for so long, Shawn, it was soul crushing. I didn't dare approach anyone because of what I'd become, and I can't help but feel like you'll be the last person to approach me," his voice became less and less monotonous, dancing between octaves as his emotions ran wild.

Maybe he was just over-reacting, maybe he didn't mean that, but what else could he mean? Harris barred his teeth and squeezed his fists, letting out a wooden cracking sound as his fingers pushed against his palms.

"If you want to leave, I can go too, I don't need to stay, I'm the whole planet's defender, not just this one forest!" Harris desperately bargained, not even allowing a chance for Shawn to respond. "Just... I'm sorry," he sighed.

"I was alone, Shawn, truly alone. I won't force you to stay with me if you don't want to, but I promise that I won't ever forget what you've done for me," Harris said sadly. He hung his head and turned away, closing his eyes and waiting for Shawn to leave.

The Wanderer

Shawn stood still in near absolute horror, unable to even grasp what had just happened. Unable to think, he instead followed his insticts, and moved quickly to Harris, and stood in front of him. Shawn then wrapped his arms around him and hugged him, tightly, burying his scruffy face into Harris's neck, hiding the tears that were beggining to fall from his eyes.

"N-No, no, how could you think I'd ever leave you, how could I leave you."
Shawn continued to hold on to Harris, squeezing him tighter, and continuing.
"Don't you dare ever think that'd I'd want to be somewhere that isn't by your side Harris. You are the greatest person I've ever met, and the closest thing to actual family I've ever had."
Shawn's eyes continued to pour like a broken faucet, and even though he was sure harris would feel Shawn's tears on his bare chest, he couldn't bring himself to pull away. Shawn could feel the pain of Harris eminating throughout his entire body, and could only manage to hug him tighter.
"I promise you Harris, we'll never be alone again until the day we die."

Harris

Harris was glad he he had been turned away from Shawn when the man came to embrace him, for the cascade of emotions that were brought upon him were enough to bring a tear or two to his eyes. He listened silently as Shawn continued to pull him into an ever tighter bear-hug. Harris failed to notice how Shawn's strength seemed unnatural, instead focusing on attempting to keep his emotions in check.

"I don't know what to say... I feel the same, I promise that I'll never stop being here for you," he stated with determination on his breath. He allowed a few minutes to pass so that they could both calm down before he found himself and began to think.

"Then you mean to say we should move. I see ennui's struck you," he said, his normal taciturn method of speaking returning once more. "I cannot say I feel the same, but I would follow you to the edge of the Earth should it prove necessary."

Harris looked over Hope Springs one last time, he'd miss it while he was gone; nothing had the ambiance of a small town, but he wouldn't abandon his friend just because he didn't want to give up the ambiance, what kind of person would he be then?

"Where do you mean to take us? I'm originally from Maine, but I've always loved travelling, in fact that's what got me into this mess," he admitted, chuckling. He was much more confident about himself, Shawn was to thank for that, but he still missed what he had lost somehow, despite his new form being better in every way than a human body. He sighed and smiled at Shawn, wordlessly confirming that everything was going to be fine despite the little hiccup.

The Wanderer

Hearing Harris' voice's returning to it's normal, comforting tone brought a wave of relief onto Shawn, and he stepped back, wiping his eyes quickly. He smilled softly after a few moments had passed, and things had calmed down. He found himself feeling incredible solace in knowing that Harris planned to stay with him too, even without Shawn forcing kinship.
"Not ennui, but Wanderlust,"
He said with a soft chuckle, before continuing.
"Sadly, while my heart demands me to wander, it doesn't give me a location, just a direction. Now, it's calling me East. Perhaps we could stay in Kentucky or Illinois for a few weeks? I definitely think you're able to handle some more intense security duty, thanks to yours truly."
He said chuckling again, winking as he promoted himself shamelessly. He hadn't been in Illinois since his mother had passed away, which forced him to move to Georgia to stay with his Grandparents, who had been neglectful to say the least.
"Perhaps we could stay in the Shawnee or Hoosier forest, seems right up your alley Or well, cave I guess?" He said with a wide smirk, playfully teasing Harris.

Harris

Harris sighed in an exaggerated fashion in response to Shawn's teasing. That did sound like a fun little excursion though, he would like to see something other than forest however, he heard Hub City was at its most peaceful around Christmas time, though he'd never have thought to visit had he not become... immortal, as far as he could tell. Of course, Shawn didn't share that, but Harris had been told multiple times by the plants that Shawn wasn't normal, so maybe he could handle himself. The fact that he literally talked to trees had proven to be quite a bit of ammunition for Shawn when Harris had revealed it.

"I've been in a forest for half of a year, I'd like to see something different, honestly. If you're such a security expert, than perhaps you wouldn't mind us going to the Hub," he jabbed at Shawn. "I've heard it's less dangerous this time of year. Not that that's saying much, people do live there, so it's not as if it is an instant death zone."

He wondered why he felt so set on going to Hub City, maybe it was the fact that he had always been told not to, that which is forbidden tastes all the sweeter for it. He believed that was a quote from the Bible, he was wrong probably, he wasn't religious, very few scientists were. It wasn't as if he'd taken time out of his day to think about the wonders Hub City hid, it was just one of the places he'd hoped to visit one day, perhaps just to see if all the rumors were true.

It was liberating to realize that all those dangerous places he was too afraid to go to before were open to him now that he was whatever he was. Perhaps he'd finally be able to find that wonder bacteria he was looking for in the Everglades. It was always a possibility.

The Wanderer

Shawn raised an eyebrow in slight suprise at Harris's suggestion to go to Hub city, he then smiled widely. Shawn knew how insecure Harris was about his form, and it bought him genuine joy that he was becoming comfortable enough to seek out an area with a significant population. It reminded him that their friendship was mutually benficial, and not as one sided as he thought on the occasion that his insecurities set in.
"Well then I'd be more than happy to go to Hub city, I haven't been there before, but are you sure you'll be comfortable there?"
He asked, wanting to make sure that Harris didn't suggest it for his own sake. Ironically, despite his power he wasn't particularly fond of the vast majority of humanity.

Harris

Harris nodded.

"I'm ready for this, Shawn. About time I stopped hiding," he responded simply, examining his hand as he used to back when he had first met Shawn. "I'm not afraid of who I am."

He turned to begin walking, but stopped in his tracks as a realization crossed his mind.

"Shawn, have you ever flown before?" he asked without a hint of sarcasm or joking in his voice. "I only ask because..." A pair of wings suddenly shot out of his back.

"I've got a ticket to fly."

The Wanderer

Shawn smiled so widely that it could be seen through his beard, and stepped forward.
"I've been waiting for you to ask me that since the day we met."

This was the third time Question had found her taking out criminals. He had been rushing to the scene, having heard the woman cry out, and was just about to take action when she appeared. He couldn't see her features, she hid them well behind a hooded trench coat ('That's my look,' he had thought to himself when he first saw her), but she seemed to be a young woman. Definitely powerful, judging by the quick way she dispatched the thugs, if a bit inexperienced.

After dispatching the thugs, she offered to take the woman to a shelter. "Hurm." He hummed to himself, pulling out his journal and scribbling in a quick entry. Question's Journal, November 27th 2019, Entry #3; Following woman in red coat. Will speak with her.

Putting the journal and pen back into his pocket, he climbed down from his perch on a rooftop via a fire escape, discreetly tailing the lady in red and the other woman. He kept the brim of his fedora low, in order to avoid anyone noticing his mask, continuing to follow the two women. Before long, they reached a shelter, and the lady in red made her leave. It was then that he made his move. "Been seeing you around." He said from behind her, aiming to startle her. "Who are you?"

Sisters of Mercy Women's Shelter, Hub City

It had taken her close to fifteen minutes to walk the woman to the shelter. After her ordeal, it would've been kind of messed up to try and hurry her along. Besides, during their walk she had learned that her name was Cassandra McKenzie, an investigative reporter conducting research for an article on the surge in gang violence within The Wedge. By the time they had made it to the shelter, she had regained enough composure to ask her for an interview the next day.

She shook that off really well, she had to admit. Maybe the shelter wasn't even necessary.

Karen wasn't really sure about the whole interview thing, though. She had the reporters number, but...well, she was still learning how to use her powers. What could she even tell her?

"Eh?" She was jarred from her thoughts when a man behind her broke the silence. Turning to face him, she kept her head low...because she figured being all "mysterious" made for a good presentation. He was asking her who she was. That was a pretty good question, actually...who was she? She hadn't really chosen a hero name yet. The closest thing she had was what some local gossip articles had called her over the past few days.

"...Lady in Red," she replied with a light smile. "And you're The Question, aren't you? Big fan of your work, it's an honor."

November 30, 5:17 AM, Beedle's apartment, Coast City

@Ceta de Cloyes

Jessie woke up to the harsh sound of her phone vibrating on her crafting station. Across the room. At 5 AM. On a Saturday. Who the Hell was trying to get in touch with her at this godforsaken hour? 5 AM shouldn't be allowed to exist, she thought to herself as she carefully danced around the discarded clothing and half-finished projects taking up most of her floorspace. 5 AM should be illegal. Jessie finally made it to the source of the offending noise, wincing as the brightness of her phone screen caused her to momentarily blind herself. She stared in confusion for a moment at the message, her sleep-addled brain putting the pieces together.

Ezra didn't get sick. Though to be fair, she had only known him for like, a month. But still, a month in the middle of flu season, and not even a case of the sniffles. Though, she hadn't gotten sick either, but that was more than likely because she was what her dad called 'Metahuman' and something as stupid as the flu shouldn't bother her-- Back on track, Ezra shouldn't be sick. And if he was, he shouldn't be texting her at 5 AM. Besides, she had just seen him yesterday, before he disappeared to do whatever weird stuff he did when he disappeared.

Something felt wrong about this. Jessie didn't consider herself an expert on social situations, most people bored the crap out of her. But Ezra was the closest thing she had to a friend, and this felt... Abrupt. Sighing, Jessie sat down in her wheelie chair, setting her phone on her crafting station and putting her hands over it. She closed her eyes and focused on the intricate workings of the device, tracing the signal it had received, bouncing of cell towers, her consciousness compressing down to a fine pinpoint as he tried to get a sense of the phone that had pinged her own... It would be so much easier, incredibly simple if she just had Ezra's phone here. She could get into it with little trouble, even with a lock on it. Find everything on there, probably even get his bank info and social security number if she wanted. This way though... If she was lucky, she'd maybe get a sense of its recent activity.

Jessie was nothing if not lucky. Only one cell tower between her phone and Ezras. The signal was good, and she could feel... A phone call. A... A picture? And then a picture message, a followup text to the same line, too scrambled and far to make out where it went. And one text to her. Jessie opened her eyes and leaned back in her chair, her mind finally coming to life as adrenaline began to spike. A phone call could be explained, calling the gym to say he was sick. The text to her could be just that. But a picture message? Who was he texting a picture to, especially a long-distance one? He didn't have a girlfriend, she was confident of that. No friends that he would talk about. And why a picture? Something smelled wrong.

"What's up dude?" She replied quickly, surprising even herself. "You okay? Need some like... Soup or anything? Let me know what's up." Her fingers hit the SEND button as she watched the little text bubble pop up and she scowled at her phone. She was... Concerned. Maybe she was reading too much into it. But why would she do that? Jessie thought of herself as fairly level headed, she wasn't one to overreact much. What did it mean if she was? But what if something really was wrong? She was the coolest person she knew, and the most powerful to boot. She could help. But why? Why help Ezra? She'd only known him a month, just needed a workout buddy, and someone to do coursework with, and to vent about school and work to, and follow her around to go get weird food when the urge struck, and not look at her like she was crazy all the time, only when she was acting crazy, and oh god he was her friend that's why. She cared. If something was wrong, she needed to help. She had to add his name to her very short list. And if he wouldn't accept her help... Maybe Lightning Bug would have a slightly different debut than she intended.

Echo

Ezra hadn't been expecting an immediate reply, Benji would likely spend a few hours doing research before responding, and Jessie was definitely sleeping, she wouldn't reply until the morning. Or so he'd thought, but either she was already up or she was much more sensitive to her phone going off than he was, because when he picked up his phone a few minutes later there was a notification that she'd replied.

He'd not even noticed the time really, he hadn't been able to sleep since he got home so when he’d finally motivated himself to do stuff he'd simply done them and not thought about how early it was. He was surprised then, and a little touched, that Jessie had bothered to even look, much less reply to his message with concern. Not that that was- was- he sighed, he didn't know where that train of thought was going, but he couldn't let the actions of a few tarnish his opinion of his friend; Jessie may be human, but she wasn't a murderer, she- probably- no, she wouldn't turn on him for being an alien.

But still… it wasn't safe to drag her into this, and his disguise was thoroughly wrecked for the night. It'd be better for both of them if she remained oblivious and stayed away for a bit. With that grim and disheartening thought in mind he sent a short reply; thanks, but I'm fine, he began, its just contagious is all, not a big deal. There, downplaying the symptoms to relieve concern, playing up the risk of infection to warn her off, perfect excuse for… hiding on the roof away from humanity for a day or three.

He sighed, unsure how long he'd be able to stay here- and wasn't that a whopping question and a half? He was pretty sure he'd gotten home untracked given that no one had turned up yet, but the risk remained. It was unlikely any identification programs they had would be able to identify him if they managed to get a picture, unless they'd managed to get the technology to account for energy beings… He was probably safe, finding an energy weapon was easy compared to that kind of tech. It was still dangerous though, there were federal alien hunting agents in Coast City, so he should probably get out right? It wouldn't be hard, he could just fly away, but he'd have to leave so much behind that way, and then what? If America wasn't welcoming aliens then what about the rest of the world? Should he leave the country? The planet?

Good luck with that; this planet was obscenely difficult to get off of, there was absolutely no traffic beyond the occasional smuggled refugee, whose ship quickly left after dropping the passenger off. No one on Earth who knew anything about aliens had access to the right kinds of currency or resources to properly pay for transport back to civilized space, so they didn't linger. It was infuriating, and the brevity and infrequency of such visits meant it was impossible to contact them, predict them, or even notice them until months or years after. Ezra was also pretty sure this was a restricted planet, meaning that it was known, but peripheral and far from anyone’s focus, and also off limits to more advanced species until they reached a certain level of technology or awareness, whichever came first.

No, for now he had to stay on Earth, probably in America as well, and he didn't have to leave Coast City just yet. He did have a life here, as difficult as it had been to get attached to such an alien lifestyle it was now just as difficult to get unattached. He liked this city, it's people, or he had, but now it was just a little… scary.

Maybe he should be scary too. To protect himself maybe, but mostly to feel safe again. His eyes were drawn up from the carved ecto-plate in his hands, landing on a black and white suit hanging in the life pod. Maybe it was time for Echo to appear…

He let the idea float around in his head, but returned to tinkering rather than acting on the thought. He'd considered becoming a hero before, taking up his true look as a kind of disguise and working to give aliens a good name. Now he didn't think about that persona he'd created and think of freedom and hope, instead he thought safety and power. If he was Echo he wouldn’t think of running from those agents, he'd want to fight them, make them stop, force them to see how wrong they were, and just… fix everything. That's what Echo was supposed to be anyway, now he had different thoughts, less kind thoughts that rang clear with notes of finality and anger.

...but he wasn't at that point yet. He left the suit hanging where it was and refocused on his work. Regardless of what Echo could do, Ezra needed an Ectonian shield generator now, the rest was just wishful thinking.

1:23 AM, GCU Library, Burnley, Gotham, November 27th.

@Ceta de Cloyes

"Tommy, run!" Clayton Toombs roared as he brought the mace down onto the flesh golem's lumpy, rotting shoulder, the creature barely seeming to notice the crushing blow as bone shattered under the weight of the steel head. The monster's twisted, mutilated lips pulled back in a snarl as it almost effortlessly backhanded the necromancer across the room, with the big man slamming into a bookshelf that was almost overflowing with occult tomes, which fell around him with dull thuds drowned out by the commotion filling the library. Gritting his teeth, he stared up at the monster as it lumbered towards him, fists beginning to smoke and crackle with unholy fire as it grinned at him. He snarled right back and hurled a bolt of negative energy at the golem, trying to sap the strength from the necrotic muscles. It staggered for a moment, roaring with pain as rotting muscles were drained, but surged back up as the spirit within called on it's own power to drive it on.

It had been even worse than he'd imagined. The surge in the ley lines had taken what would should have been a mindless beast akin to Frankenstein's monster and turned it into a monster like he hadn't seen in ages. Clayton was still guessing as to what the hell had happened a few weeks prior, but ever since it seemed as though everything magical had increased in strength three-fold. It had allowed the would-be necromancer to create a body far stronger than she had ever hoped for. When he'd seen her head twenty feet from her body, he figured that she was not aware of how enticing a body like that was to the Fallen, and with the strengthening of the ley lines, so too had come a weakening of the veils between planes.

So Clayton Toombs and his son had found themselves battling a goddamn seven foot tall flesh golem with a demon spirit inside, and all the infernal power that came with it. An unlucky night to say the least, especially since all four of the library guards were dead and strewn across the room. The mage grunted and hefted the mace again, trying to figure some way of damaging the thing in a way the Fallen couldn't just patch up.

"Get the Silver Nail!" He barked at Tommy, charging forward and ducking under a massive, flame-covered fist, bringing the mace down into the back of the golem's knee. "Trunk of the car, bring it and ram it straight up this fucker's ass!"

"Hunh. Lady in Red. Makes sense, I suppose." The faceless vigilante said, reaching into his pocket to pull out a sugar cube and unwrap it. He did so, pulling his mask above his mouth to pop it in, before pulling the mask back down and munching on it, savoring the sweetness. "You're doing good job. Seen you intervene in three different crimes over last week. Powerful, but lack refinement in technique." He added the last part almost absentmindedly, crossing his arms.

"Seem young, naive, so figured just warn you: be careful. City can and will chew you up and spit you back out if impulsive. If doesn't kill you, will break you mentally." A hint of venom could be heard in Question's normally monotone voice as he shifted his body almost unconsciously, a shudder running down his spine. "Just giving warning. Don't want to go out one night and find your corpse." He paused, as if noticing something. "Also, might want to invest in a mask. Keeps identity concealed."

With that, he went silent for a moment, then asked: "Any questions?"

Karen remained silent while The Question addressed her, mostly wondering why he hadn't offered her any candy, if he had it. It had been a while since she had any kind of sugary goodness in her life. Wait, was thinking like that childish? It probably was. She was an adult right now, and needed to act like it. Goals. He also seemed to be lecturing her, which wasn't too surprising. He was, after all, an old dude. That's just what they did.

"I'm actually a native," Karen stated, when he mentioned the city chewing her up. She kind of did understand where he was coming from there, though, this place was pretty much like someone saw Mos Eisley and thought it needed to exist in the real world. "I grew up in The Wedge, so I know how ugly this place is."

She was still growing up in it, in fact, but he didn't need to know that detail. In any case, he now wanted to know if she had questions. Well, sure she did! It wasn't every day when she got to meet an Urban Legend. Though, in all honestly, she would've been a lot more excited if she hadn't already met an actual wizard and a talking cat.

"Erm...so you mentioned getting killed. Ever gotten beat up before? What mistakes did you make that caused it?" She asked, more out of simple curiosity than actual worry for her safety. He did, after all, seem like just a normal guy. He probably wasn't bulletproof or super strong, or anything like that.
