Commonly they like to weight the different responses, usually against Trump, meaning that often the final numbers would look especially bad for him. This was especially rampant in the months leading up to election, where looking at these surveys would often show that Trump had comparable or superior favorability to Clinton but weighing the results would change the numbers. The abstracts of surveys, as well as all the sites that report on them, do not go into the methodology or look at the actual numbers. They report the final percentages. If you want to cite one of these surveys, make sure to check the survey itself first. You might be surprised what the data actually shows.
