In the modern world, if someone spoke about evil spirits and conjuring out in the open, people would most likely send them to a mental hospital. The occult isn’t something publicized or celebrated, in some places it’s even forbidden, and yet the ideas of the supernatural have struggled on throughout the years.

Simply look to the Japanese shrines for proof. These buildings have been standing for hundreds of years, and are still visited on the daily. Right by your home in the growing city of Kokona, there is one in particular that gets the most hushed talk among peers. It is said that the shrine, known as the Obake Shrine, is a dimension which connects this world to that of the dead. Rumors have it that the gentle woman who is the leader of the shrine is an onmyoji, as well as all of the shamans and priestesses below her.

Disbelieving this, you decide to investigate. Late at night, you trespass into the Obake shrine. As soon as you pass through a peculiar looking torii gate guarding the back entrance, you have signed yourself down to never go back to your old life ever again.

Hiya!

I’ve been looking for a Japanese mythology/demon hunter type role play for a bit now but couldn’t find one, so I decided to make my own!

The premise is either you are onmyoji who works at the shrine, or you are a student who had trespassed out of curiousity. The students who enter will have their third eye opened, and thus will now be able to see and hear spirits— both good and malicious.

They will be adapted into the shrine as “part timers”, which truly means they will be fighting side by side with their shinigami to protect the city!

Sounds pretty amusing as a concept. I'm most certainly interested in playing an omniyoji character, just not sure if I'll be able to finish a character that early since the period of the year is pretty busy for me.

This is a super interesting concept. I think I'd be in, but I'd want to see a full OOC first before I decide one way or another.

Hmm, would it be possible to play a spirit of some sort? Perhaps someone possessed by something, rather.

@Veradana Yup that’s perfectly okay! There’s a lot of wiggle room for character creation, and that sounds neat. Maybe that was the reason your character was interested in the first place?

@Rune_Alchemist Youre getting ahead of me, dear. But yes, spirits themselves will be playable characters. A possessed person might be okay, but of course I’d have to see the details.

@Raging Fenrir Spirits will be playable, as previously mentioned. They are either shikigami or just solitary yokai. If you wish to be a servant, then your character will have to be a shikigami, so just leave your “onmyouji” slot blank until it’s filled.

I sure hope you're brushing up on Shintoism for this, because I don't think Shinto priests or exorcists fought alongside shinigami.

@Sho Minazuki shikigami*, and I’m more going on the idea that many priests and exorcists were Onmyouji as was believed years ago. Shintoism originally derived many practices from Taoism, including onmyodo. Im going by this as my main reference.
