The OOC thread is used for out of character discussion not necessarily related to the RP and for coordination of ideas on collaboration, etc.

There is a Discord for this RP, hence the low OOC post count. Admission requires an approved nation sheet and first IC post within a week of acceptance.

FAQ for Nation Sheets:

Q: Nuclear weapons, to what extent do they exist?

The allies of the Cindorayi have some nukes, from being more trusted, and other nations have 'bought' or somehow obtained fewer to none but it's not well known how many. The main competitors to the Cindorayi, the Velucan, were the only other nation to possess nuclear weapons at the end of the Void War due to inheritance from the Aldabetans, and the two have stood off in a cold war for the last two decades. The Cindorayi have attempted to prevent this to limited success, but are still overpowering enough where any attempted use would likely lead to MAD, so they hold off for now.

Q: Can I develop energy shields like in Star Trek or something?

"Energy shields" as they exist in sci-fi are out of even near-future range of technology. We can't really manipulate and keep plasma hot like that, and if we did, it would burn up the people inside the shield. However, projected electromagnetic fields can repel magnetic projectiles and redirect or scatter other forms of electromagnetic energy, such as lasers. The primary drawbacks to this would be a. running out of power and b. non-magnetic projectiles, such as carbon or tungsten. Most conventional weaponry uses iron or steel, which is magnetic, however.

Alternatively, you could use an electromagnetic field to reinforce the hull of your ship, but that's still vulnerable to running out of power or to laser weapons that would melt the ship and harm the people inside with heat.

I'd imagine fairly positive, as long as the hostility over Ryuvia remained veiled behind civil diplomacy. As a Nova Dominion ally, you would have likely received some help with technology and we likely have a joint research facility or two, along with the Rafinid. Also, we probably coordinated the moon colony planning together so as to not step on each other's territorial toes, and some working relationship as far as use of orbital stations. Likely, some of the corvettes that lost their docking facilities relocated to a station of yours. A lot of it is going to depend on what nation becomes our southern neighbor, though, as right now that remains open.

Name of Nation: The Unified Soto Guilds

Nation Characteristics: The USG is a union of multiple guilds who took power after the Soto Republic collapsed. These guilds make up the core of society and create a federated system of government as the overall government is a union of these guilds who regionally control different parts of the Soto rainforest. They are, despite this, unstable and with a highly romantic culture where free thinking is heavily encouraged and civil unrest is common. Economically they are a mixture of market socialism and cosmopolitanism. Their multiculturalism goes back centuries and is the legacy of a network of ancient tropical empires that had oriented themselves along the huge river systems of the Soto region. These guilds can trace their origins back to these empires.

While the inhabitants of the Soto region once existed in rigid caste systems and very autocratic modes of governance, their whole civilization basically has been in a state of perpetual instability ever since their traditional ally, the Aldabetan Republic got destroyed by the Cindoryai.

Their current society, the USG, has already seen a major political shift towards more socialist politics and has undergone a huge spree of military spending while continuing tensions with multiple imperial societies to this day. In spite of all this, they actively work with other less authoritarian societies and have tried to spearhead various international organizations to varying degrees of success.

Their current leader is the First Citizen Somis, elected in 2052 under the Builders Guild and has maintained its coalition ever since. Somis has been a very aggressive player unlike its more pragmatic predecessor.

History:
The Soto Republic was founded in the ashes of some very dark times, mainly in the wake of a colonial revolt against occupiers from distant lands around the year 1900 which ended in the unification of the whole Soto rainforest under a single government. The Soto Republic modernized their society and dealt with decades of very tumultuous, corrupt politics for its 80 years of existence. The Republic age is mostly known for the incredible corruption and incredible opulence. The Soto Union started in 1985 after a civil war within the earlier Soto Republic caused by debt crises, which spiraled out of control and a military that ran out of money. The Violet Society became the dominant force and moved society towards a more or less conservative place as they remained staunch, but distant allies of the Republic who they still perceive a debt to.

After the Void War the current market socialist system developed after as the populous became much more radicalized due to the economic fallout of the war and a climate of extreme terror. A much more left wing political faction known as the Builders Guild was elected to power under the pragmatic leadership of Idani in 2041. The Violet Society was perceived as too submissive to the imperialists in 2041. The Builders Guild has pretty much dominated politics ever since on a general agenda of building a better world and universal freedom. They also are why market socialism became the de facto economy within the Union, the guilds and market in theory balancing each other out. In theory.

Nation Location: The rainforest region with the four rivers and single large lake. (same place)

Nation Initial Population: 107 million, 70% Sumuta, 30% other

Species Name: The Sumuta

Species Characteristics: The Sumuta are molluscoids who have adapted to an arboreal environment, they are literal airheads. They have warm colored compound eyes at the front of their mantle which see far more colors than usual. Their bodies tend to be pale blue or simply white with various stripy skin patterns. Limb-wise they have four sets of tentacles with a bilateral symmetry which themselves have four sub-tentacles they use for tool manipulation.

Their large amorphous mantle obscures their triangular beak. The Sumuta reproduce with purse eggs they hang from trees who become larvae, of whom grow under water in fresh water conditions into bigger Sumuta over time. It is during this process that the larvae develop their air bladders and adult body parts, eventually growing enough to begin floating just enough to be able to walk on land. The Sumuta are fresh water mulluscoids adapted to the tropical streams of the Soto region and the Sumuta lake which is where millions of Sumuta have lived for ages.

They’re around 7’ on average from the top of their air filled mantle to the tip of their 'toe' sub-tentacle and are remarkably dexterous and intelligent critters. Though their strength is pretty weak, making them dependant on other races and machines to due the heavily lifting.

Side Chosen in Void War: Aldabetan Republic

Technological Level: Advanced in regards to design, are very good at engineering design. However, their economy is still a manufacturing oriented one and their military spending spree has given them some innovations of note mainly in having developed computing system and whatnot. Their spacecraft are remarkably maneuverable, but lack the damage output or advanced defenses of say, the Cindoryai Empire. They inherited a fair amount of tech from their trade relations with the Aldabetans.

Tech to note:
-They have machines/drones
-Very competent with magnetics.
-They have the capability to build orbital infrastructure, most notably they have been trying to make an orbital city with some help.
-Have been working on orbital kill satellites and have launched a couple in the past year taking advantage of the Cindoryai's weakened space infrastructure.

Special Resource: Ethermaterial, a bubbly building material with aerogel-like properties they have huge stores of within the Soto highlands. Ethermaterial is used very liberally by them.

OK how zis

Name of Nation: Pokash

Nation Characteristics: Though dim-witted by many standards, the hatalmawsh of Pokash defend their homeland with ferocity and pride. The hatalmawsh's biological incapability to second-guess its own beliefs makes for a bigoted species that has trouble understanding others and engaging in diplomacy with foreign nations. Pokash disguises its every negotiation as a rancorous demand: "PROVIDE A PORT TO BUY OUR GOODS." "ENGAGE IN PEACE TALKS." "ACCEPT 3,000,000 CREDITS IN AID, DAMN YOU." Hatalmawsh culture values 'bigness' as the ultimate standard of beauty and authority. The swamp is good because it is big enough to sustain us, the trees are good because they are big enough to live in, the mountains are good because they are big enough to defend our land, and Boss Hash is the boss because he is taller than you or me.

Nation Location: Nova Mondial. Swamp area beneath southern mountains on large eastern continent. Territory also expands a little north into that mountain range, along the river. EDIT: Someone beat me to the swamps! Can I have some of that mountain region next to the yellow-orange?

Nation Initial Population: 53 million

Species Name: Hatalmawsh

Species Characteristics: The three-legged hatalmawsh strides through swamps and scales cliffsides with ease, thanks to webbed claws on each long, spindly limb. Its bulbous abdomen is covered in slimy strands of hair. Three beady black eyes, one centereed between each pair of shoulders, look out in all directions. To feed, the carnivorous hatalmawsh traps its prey with its legs and settles down to gore it with a tough beak on the underside of its spherical belly, later vomiting out the bones and waste. The creatures communicate through touch and vocalizations.

Side Chosen in Void War: Strong allegiance to the Cindorayi due to history of trade and support.

Technological Level: Pre-modern technology - the hatalmawsh have traded for modern-era devices, but have failed to implement the innovations of ideas, such as the assembly line, that would allow them to produce their own technologies at a large scale. As such, most hatalmawsh make do with what they can personally scavenge and create. The wealthy make use of luxury technologies from foreign nations, making Pokash rely heavily on imports to remain relevant on the world stage. The nation has little space presence. Every few years it launches another doomed satellite, sometimes manned by an unfortunate crew, to crash and burn and leave the hatalmawsh scientists scratching their furred abdomens over what could've gone wrong.

Special Resource: Tiger drop mushrooms, a potent narcotic native to the Pokash swamps. A profitable trade is done worldwide by smuggling the stuff into nations that outlaw it. Pokash itself allows recreational use of the drug, partially because of the profits it hauls in from the flood of tourists to its heavily-taxed tiger drop parlors.

At last!

Name of Nation: Adanaya Autonomous District (within the People's Republic of Cindorya)

Nation Characteristics:

The Void war represented a definitive break with the previous millenia of Adanaya history. Nevertheless, to understand what kind of society they have now and how it might evolve in the future, it is necessary to present the now-defunction institutions that organized Adanaya life.
The most ancient written records of urban settlements and organized government in the Adanaya lands date from the early 17th century BO (before origin, that is, the year zero of the Cindorayi calendar). The traditional start of the Adanaya calendar is the half-mythical unification of the Adanaya lands under the monarchy in 639 BO. Several dynasties ruled the empire over the course of the centuries, until the 12th century AO, when a succession of weak monarchs dying on the field of battle, in infancy, of diseases, or suffering from mental disabilities ultimately led to the de facto abolition of the function. Over time, indeed, the monarchs had established a vast bureaucracy to administer the far reaches of their empire, which became over the centuries the backbone of government, surviving civil wars, new dynasties, gaining every time more legitimacy and autonomy. By the 12th century, with the forward acceleration caused by the weakness of the monarchy, the administration had become fully autonomous, functioning without the need for any input from above. From then on, Adanaya society functioned without a political leader, governed and administrated instead by a sprawling bureaucracy and courts of law.
Adanaya society was until the Void war organized by a rigid caste system wherein birth determined occupation and social standing. The general categories were ashmirna (priests), sektan (soldiers), memirta (artisans), yashim (traders) and sid (farmers). Social life was highly codified, with social interactions, especially but not only between different castes, defined in the minutest detail.
The only major institution where the caste system did not apply was the government, where officials were hired by means of an entry exam open to all regardless of social status, where knowledge of the classics, law, religion, history and geography, as well as more specific fields relevant to each specific administration was tested (much like imperial China). The Adanaya government was divided in two independent sections: the administration, which made regulations and enforced them, which had a tendency to sprawl and to indefinitely extend its authority, and the courts, which judged compliance with regulations and with administrative statues and precedents, with a tendency to limit the administration's expansion. The courts were the first way through which the people could intervene in the political process. The administrations themselves were independent from each other, insofar as they had different fields of authority, though where there was overlap and mutual concern, coordination was ensured by countless commissions and committees. Over time, in the absence of any principle of representation, two positions had been created, the only two where elections applied: that of rajan (equivalent of Tribune of the Plebs), who represented the people as a whole, and could exercise in this capacity a wide range of discretionary powers, such as a power of veto, to propose regulations, to revoke officials, in certain conditions; that of wirani (equivalent of ombudsman), who could issue pardons and order new trials, or to revoke a judge.
Justifiably proud of their stable government, which could be traced back over 27 centuries with remarkable continuity, the Adanaya were even prouder of their culture, which had an even longer past and which had flowered over the centuries into myriad creations of the most varied nature. Regardless of the reality of their claim that theirs was by far the most accomplished culture on Nova Mondial, their lack of interest for the outside world was revelatory of the extreme cohesion of their society. Every institution served in a way to legitimate society and regulate it: the caste system naturalized the division of production, whereas the government, without any discernible conflict except the mechanism of courts, no transcendent figure such as a ruler, was not so much above society as an emanation of it, its face; religion was similarly immanent, as it was an ancestor cult which replaced every individual in an immemorial chain of beings, giving them a place in the universe.
Despite this, Adanaya society on the eve of its destruction in the Void war was already remarkably fragile. Industrialization had fragilized the bases of society, revealing the rigidities of a system that for millenia had avoided catastrophic upheaval. It had destroyed or transformed beyond recognition numerous ancient activities at the basis of the caste system, and had created new ones which had no place in it. Furthermore, the creation of vast amounts of new wealth both divided and reinforced the ruling classes: it weakened the primacy of the ashmirna class, but also concentrated industrial and financial capital in the hands of the yashim, the industrialists and bankers. But this left the other classes mired in poverty, and turned on its head the traditional mechanisms of solidarity and redistribution. Class conflict was constant and intense in the decades leading to the war.
The Void war was arguably the most significant event in Adanaya history since the end of the monarchy, if not the appearance of civilization itself. The Adanaya supported their traditional ally, the Aldabetan Republic, which resulted after their defeat in the complete destruction of both polities and their annexation by the Cindorayi empire (the Adanaya had always considered the Cindorayi to be little more than well-armed brutes). The Adanaya were evicted from their homeland and transfered to labor camps where they were forced to work for their new masters. When colonization of Cindorya was initiated in 2048, the empire took the initiative to resettle the totality of the remaining Adanaya population (save for a few thousand individuals who had found refuge in neutral states) to the planet, so as to avoid any threat of coordination with their former allies.
On Cindorya, the Adanaya were overwhelminingly put to use to exploit the exceptional mineral riches of the valley of Yasheron, in the heart of the volcanic mountain range which dominates the planet's main landmass (among which gold, silver, iron, silicon, copper, lead, titanium, and rare Earths). There, they were organized in a number of mining camps, where they were given some measure of autonomy by the Cindorayi overlords, in what amounted essentially to ghettos. The remainder of the population was used for farm work and domestic service. This was the situation when the revolution broke out, with some cooperation between the Adanaya and the Cindorayi revolutionaries beforehand. The Adanaya have suddenly been freed from their chains, and been recognized as their own political entity by the People's Republic of Cindorya, the Adanaia Autonomous district, but their society, government and culture have been nearly wiped out, leaving a terrifying and miraculous blank slate. What will arise from the ashes remains to be seen.

Nation Location: See below the map of Cindorya. The Adanaya Autonomous district (AAD) is located in the valley of Yasheron, in the center of the main landmass of the planet.

Nation Initial Population: Around 100,000 people. Due to the war, the violence exerted by the Cindorayi in the labor camps, starvation, diseases, the forced resettlement to Cindorya, over 90% of the population has been wiped out since the beginning of the Void war.

Species Name: Adanaya

Species Characteristics: See image below. The Adanaya stand on average around 1m60 to 1m80, and have a slender build. Their most noticeable physical features are their mouth from which sprout four tentacles, and their two horns/antennae, which they use to detect odors and air humidity with striking accuracy, as well as to amplify sounds they make. Their body is spotted with small black-and-green spots which are used to communicate and to express emotions using light signals of various colors. They are herbivores. The Adanaya are hermaphrodites, who can only reproduce in trios, with two individuals transmitting their fertilized material to a third.

Side Chosen in Void War: Aldabetan.
Technological Level: To the extent that they were slaves of the Cindorayi, who have now been freed, they have access to all technologies on Cindorya.

Special Resource: Yasheronian gas. It is the only known gas with magnetic properties. It emanates from the volcanic pits dominating the valley of Yesheron. It has a light blue hue, is odorless and inoffesive to living beings. It was discovered just a few months prior to the revolution.

I apologize for my inactivity, but I've learned the hard way it's really difficult to immerse yourself in writing when the muscle on your side was torn away from your ribcage. Even more so when the pharmacy and your insurance keep fighting, and you can't get your medication. *two thumbs up*
