You wake up, brush your teeth, have a little breakfast, dress for your job, and make sure your gun is loaded.

This is a typical day for your average person. After all everyone needs good protection against the Pests. Pests have been a problem for as long as people remember. Life goes on as usual, but with the risk of these little abominations attacking you when you leave the house. Pests resemble giant spiders, with the added detail of having many eyes and a clump of slimy tentacles where the mouth should be.

Luckily for the human race, these disgusting creatures, who seem more numerous by the day, are held at bay thanks to the efforts of Maniacles Corporation. Maniacles is a company that deals with mercenaries as well as weapon research and development. Its because of them that you now see mercenaries in suits of power armor. Its thanks to them that an average Joe can afford a reliable gun for as little as $50. They are even responsible for keeping the peace in most places. Anywhere in the world you go, people will probably know about Maniacles.

You are a young adult in this world trying to get by, working your job, maybe studying, and killing some pests along the way.

That is, until you get in trouble with the law, see the job ad, or maybe even get kidnapped. Maniacles has made contact with a society of people able to practice "magic," but anyone is capable of learning it. This could possibly change the game with the whole Pest situation, and probably make Maniacles a nice profit if they play their cards right. This is why Maniacles is looking for participants to got to the island where these mages are, and attend an academy there which teaches magic.

This will be yes, a magic school rp, but its not your little brothers magic school rp. Oh no. Aside from the obviously chaotic situation the world is in, there are dark and powerful forces working behind the scenes.

The year is 2038. The world is overrun with disgusting little monsters called Pests. You and many other young adults are going to a unique college. Think Hogwarts meets Saints Row meets Lovecraft.

Rules

1. All human. It is a fantasy setting but low fantasy. All player characters must be human.
2. Your character knows nothing of magic or the magical aspect of the world before getting to the school. Also, it is unknown why the Pests ever appeared, where they came from, and how to get rid of them for good. Your character won't know any of these things either.
3. No god modding or controlling other player's characters. If I tell you to edit a post, do so.
4. Your characters abilities must make sense regarding your skills. A character with poor rifle skills shouldn't be getting all headshots with a sniper rifle.
5. No arguing in the ic, ooc, or with the gm. If you have a suggestion or concern, do bring it up in pm but remain civil.
6. Also, don't be shy about giving suggestions. The suggestions of the players have helped RPs do well in the past.
7. Everyone will have a gun, as everyone needs one in this world. However for now only handguns and non-automatic shotguns are allowed. Put what kind of gun you have in "other" if you read the rules.
8. If Maniacles is forcing your character into this, and one of their agents finds out you're telling people about it, they will probably seriously injure or "get rid of" your character.
9. New characters are always allowed, but you will have to hold off on posting when we are "full."

Checking in here before adding to the list, I am new to this so appreciate any directions. I'm assuming that the rp starts as the characters arrive brought together by Maniacles en route to this island. Thus, am unsure how open the backstories are and I'm willing to edit if something is wrong. I added some backstory under origin and can clarify whatever if you want but felt keeping it simple was safe for a free rp.

Name: Nbarra "Bara" Olecie
Age: 19

Origin: She hails from a rural town in Colorado, a ranch at that. While enjoying the animals and work, she was an only child expected by overbearing and borderline physically abusive parents to continue ownership of the ranch. Instead, on a day when they had struck her one too many times she lashed out and struck her father back. The situation escalated and she ended up restrained, then jailed for assault after her parents testimony claimed she was the one who started hitting first. Their wealth sealed the deal and Bara spent half a year behind bars and another half in community service. During this time, her relationship with her parents was still rocky, resentful.

Towards the end of her term, the Maniacles company approached her at their home offering mercenary training and work. She felt intrigued and even interested in something that would allow her to leave home, but when she realized her parents were the ones behind securing that offer (STILL trying to get back at her after all this time) she threw a fit and refused. When her term of community service was up she took her long time friend-- the dog Miko, a suitcase of items, her mother's handgun and ran away from home. Climbed aboard a bus ride cross country. At a rest stop in the prairie, some official looking suits approached her. They slid in across the diner booth and demanded to know why she was running from obligations. Furthermore, they said the offer to work for them was never optional. They were simply humoring her.

Flustered she decided to surrender right there and took the job. She was already free of her parents home, so why did it matter any more? At least a job may hold a future bigger than homelessness.

Appearance:

A short, compact frame that can never be intimidating strength wise but is fairly agile. She has brown skin, kinky hair and hazel eyes.

Dog:

Miko is a large working mountain dog, standing a little above waist of the average person at 29 inches high. She has thick white fur and a loyal attitude. She stays by her owners side but is otherwise very lazy unless her owner is in danger or has work for her.

Skills: * An agreeable attitude, she doesn't like to cause drama and prefers to just do her job.
* If game like terms were applied, she's not much of a fighter but she has a high agility that lends to being able to run at high speeds, or sneak around quickly. She's more of a stealth build.
* Additionally, she has a healthy adrenaline that has applications from holding out stamina while running to stuffing her face with food to keep up the high energy. This can lead to embarrassing hyper moments around people or doing MORE work than was asked of her (or work that nobody asked her to do) just to not be bored.

Reason for joining: Maniacles offered work after her parents sent them her application/info for consideration (against her knowledge or will). She ran away from this obligation only to be quickly tracked down with the intent of kidnapping her if she refused. However, she actually agreed to the job the second time around because she felt it'd work out.

Other: She carries her mother's stolen handgun. When she lived at home, her parents would often make her go outside to work without being armed. This demonstrated how little regard they held for her very life once she revealed her desire to leave the ranch. Stealing the handgun felt good. Liking to keep her companion close, Miko is often laying by her side. Both of them hate to be separated, so if she leaves the dog to go to school, she'll feel anxious and Miko will probably tear something up while she's gone.

Accepted. I considered not allowing the dog to come with her, as Maniacles wouldn't but I think it would be funny if the dog wound up coming along anyway. You may post it to the characters tab.

BTW for anyone who saw the year was 2008, no idea why I had that in there. Its 2038, a near-ish dystopian future.

Alright I am going to start the RP, and anyone who wants to join will be able to for a little while.

Well... This took me a long time to write. I never really write these detailed backstories so this was uncharted waters for me, but I did it! I knew if I didn't do it now, I would never do it and would miss out on this awesome concept! (even though this took me 3 hours to write... Lots and lots of breaks included.)

So before you read this, I made a few assumptions which is totally fine with me if I need to edit them. These may not make sense before you read my character submission, but it seemed more logical to put them up here with the rest of my 'ramblings'.
1. I made her have a Ukrainian nationality (at least until age 5). Is this possible? I don't know if air/boat travel is possible with the pests. If not, I will edit this. Otherwise I'll leave it as it is :)
2. Is poker a thing in this universe? :P Sorry, just a random thought but it is still an assumption
3. Maddox deals in illegal fire-arms. Is this possible? The Maniacles have great guns I suppose, but are there guns that are illegal? Or are there restrictions on them? I don't know if you need a permit or anything? In short, is it okay if her backstory includes her dealing in illegal fire-arms?

Lastly, after you reviewed my character (and either accept it or don't, up to you although I hope the first), is there anything that bothers you or you think is too OP or too heavily focussed on one side of the good-bad spectrum. I tried to balance it out with strengths and weaknesses since I don't want my character to come over like a generic bad person that doesn't care about anyone and just shoots the first thing they see, so I hope that's not the case. If you feel like it is, please tell me because then I will edit that a bit to sound a bit more believable.
4. I also assumed a lot about how the world is different with pests. I don't really know which year they arrived, but since you said that they were around as long as anyone can remember, I think well above 80+ years? That means that the world is different and that children will learn to defend themselves earlier. Specifically why Maddox learned to handle a gun at the mere age of 10.

So about the gun dealing/smuggling, it would make sense for this universe because while open carry firearms are now legal in most places, its still restricted to pistols and non-automatic shotguns and rifles. If someone wants an automatic pistol, they need a permit and they are very expensive. If someone wants an automatic rifle, mashinegun, or laser rifle (yes, those exist in this world) thats illegal.

Oops. I forgot to mention laser weapons, didn't I?
