Makes sense to me. Who do you think would have proposed the pact initially, War Chief Kam'Till or King Childeric? I'm working on a write-up on Chancellor Vulmar, and I was planning on including a bit about his work negotiating it.

I'm doing very well, now that the server seems to be cooperating again. How are you?

As to your question, I would say in terms of historical European development, Viexmeur's tech level (and the rest of the known world) would be roughly that of early Renneaisance or a little before. About 1250-1350. Windmills, mechanical clocks, and wood-based paper all exist. No gunpowder, though.

Doing pretty well as well, also since the site is now useable again.

So would fully armored knights still be a common thing?

Oh yeah, definitely. Especially in the Crownlands and other populous, well-developed regions. They might be less common in areas that are less advanced, or where skilled smiths and iron are in shorter supply.

I was hoping Maximillian Laurens III was the one who proposed it, while trying to forge trade links with the tribals. :D

They might be less common in areas that are less advanced, or where skilled smiths and iron are in shorter supply.

They aren't as common in Laurensia either, since the dense forests make it difficult for a fully armoured person to navigate quickly. Most armoured knights who enter the area tends to wander out again several weeks later, minus their armour and with their arms filled with 'magical' items.

No gunpowder, though.

Trader: "Gunpowder? Do you mean huoyao? If you do, I think I know a man who can get some for you."

Ooc is 87 posts long, is this still open? :).

I'd like to join as an ambassador from Acirum, the land beyond the sea of stars, is such a spot still viable?

Im okay with this. It could be that they sent many different negotiators into the forest. Low ranking of course due to the high mortality rate. But one would have come back with a name kam'till, and that he was willing to negotiate terms. Kam'till would have also wanted to keep this pact alive and by forming a blood oath with the king insures that his clan would be obligated by honor to continue to help the king. The only thing that would break this pact is the obliteration of one of the two the blood lines.

I think we've lost at least one interested party from the interest checks, so I don't see why not. Though, we've already got someone interested in playing an ambassador from a foreign power, and the idea, really, is for players to represent one of the Great Provincial Houses of Viexmeur. Plus, Acirum's far enough away that contact with Viexmeur is sporadic, at best. I'd be glad to have you in if you wanted to play a province, though.

Makes sense to me. Let's say Laurensia initially proposed the pact, and was largely responsible for mediating the discussions. Kam'Till was interested in a closer relationship with the Kingdom, and Chancellor Vulmar convinced Childeric of the usefulness of having allies in Aborim. And I agree with the pact binding succeeding generations, as well. It gives Vulmar added incentive for making sure Gisela got the Crown in the first place, since she's Childeric's only living heir and without her the deal would no longer be valid. Which would have made the whole thing a waste of time.

They aren't as common in Laurensia either, since the dense forests make it difficult for a fully armoured person to navigate quickly. Most armoured knights who enter the area tends to wander out again several weeks later, minus their armour and with their arms filled with 'magical' items.

That makes sense, and would probably explain why Viexmeur never bothered to try and conquer Laurensia in the first place.

Well, armored knights will be more common in Vrenal I think. The steel and what not mined in the mountains near Vrenal, and enough blacksmiths with the knowledge to make fully armored knights a regular. Also fits in with them being constantly on a war footing.

Makes sense to me. Let's say Laurensia initially proposed the pact, and was largely responsible for mediating the discussions.

From Lauensia's history, on my CS, they've been sending tradered and merchants into the wild woods for years trying to find opportunities for profit. Looks like one of them finally managed to make it back out alive, and in good enough shape to want to go back for more.

While they were involved the 'mediations' would've been a little more like:
"See this nice sharp, shiny sword? I'll give it to you if you give me some of those worthless stones your people dig up out of the ground. And if you promise not to stab me with it."
Laurensi Trader
By the time Maxie became invovled there would've been a good line of communication with the tribe, from the string of merchants seeing their competition colleagues returning with gems overflowing from their pockets and stampeding their way into the jungle to see if they could get in on the action.

When the Crown found out what was happening Vulmar would most likely have quickly prompted King Childeric to make a formal alliance with the tribe, before the Laurensi did something to soil the waters.

Well, armored knights will be more common in Vrenal I think. The steel and what not mined in the mountains near Vrenal, and enough blacksmiths with the knowledge to make fully armored knights a regular.

Not just knights. Anyone with enougth money to pay a blacksmith could get themselves a suit of armour, and if the province was always warring with the Aborim tribes that would be seen as a necessity in their lands for people wanting to get involve in the fight and make a name for themselves.

Also, not forgetting the metals provided by the Kam. The Vrenal would have a good reason to keep the trade routes open for the tribe if they made use of metals provided from them to make stronger, alloyed armours.

I see. Tnks for replying to me still, but I think I'll give this one a second look in the future - none of the provinces called out to me as intruiging as a place where reeds give honey and trees grow wool. Bid you all have a jolly time!

That's only because we haven't had a player stake a claim on the coastal province to the west, where the honey reed and wool tree seed have spread over the sea and taken root in the marshes.

As long as it doesn't break what's already been made I wouldn't see a problem with someone coming up with something like that, how anout you @Major Sharpe?

EDIT: There's even an island on the map just south of Pridania still up for grabs where the foreign plants could have been growing for decades without anyone noticing.

If it doesn't get settled soon we might end up with a bunch of pirates building a free port out there to start preying on our naval trade routes, and that certainly wouldn't make the Laurensi very happy.
Except the ones who have shares in the shipbuilding industry.

You could always have a legion of golems smash said free port to bits. You'd only have to foot the bill for a wacky experiment that will most likely explode.

Sure, I don't see why not. As an aside, the mention of wool trees and honey reeds was inspired by the ancient Greeks' belief that those things could be found in Bactria and India. If I remember correctly, historians are pretty sure they were referring to cotton and sugarcane, respectively.

~quickly checks the CSs in the Characters thread~
Well, I would do, but at the moment we don't have anyone crafting golems for us so we don't have a readily available supply to work with. :P

Wouldn't golems struggle to deal with pirate ships after they've sailed out of port?

You'd only have to foot the bill for a wacky experiment that will most likely explode.

Carmella: "Hmm... ..pay a bill, or sit on the sidelines and watch as my rival's fleet of trade ships is destroyed leaving the way open for me to move in and secure new routes for myself. Decision, decisions..."
