Survival

Aftering having helped Oswald with some lumber, Gren assisted the others in chopping down trees. For once the chainsaw function of Annabeth was used for its original agricultural origins instead of its ad hoc weaponized purpose. He had cleared away a lot of the trees and stumps, getting a bit concerned about what they should be doing now. He could deforest this entire island by tomorrow, but that won’t help them against the coming storm or getting out of this place. He could only hope that Oswald or the others were devising a plan to get them off this island while Gren and everyone else worked on a temporary shelter.

As Gren was about to cut down another tree he heard a small voice shout at him over the roar of his chainsaw. Turning the screaming blade off he turned to see Yue, the weird brown maid girl. He hasn’t really interacted with her much since the parent’s day meeting. He walked over to her since she seemed to have an idea. Gren had an idea too, so if her plan sucks he’d suggest his own. ”Hey, wussup?”

While both Gren and Yue’s weapons were pretty well suited for chopping down the surrounding forestry and providing large amounts of wood and lumber for the group, Robert’s wasn’t. When he came to realize that trying to hack through was doing more damage to the blade then it was to the actual tree, he would resign himself to collecting what the others had brought down and gathering it all together as best as he could, rolling what he could and dragging what wouldn’t fit between the stumps left in their path.

As he wiped the sweat from his brow with the sleeve of his hoodie, he heard the voice of Yue call out over the raucous sound of the orc’s chainsaw. Regrouping with the two of them, he greeted his classmates with a simple, ”What’s up?”

Yue looked to the two boys and gulped. Normally she wasn’t one to lead projects like this, however her mother had told her that once she becomes the head maid of the Schnee family, it would be her responsibility to organize and direct others. She just hadn’t expected to do something like this so soon. Clearing her throat Yue bowed at Gren and Robert before speaking. ”I have an idea how we could build the shelter. First, I need Gren to carve out some notches on those trees over there.” Yue pointed towards four fairly stout tree they haven’t cut down yet.

”Those four trees will be the corners of the shelter we’ll be building. What I was thinking is that we could use wood joining to put these logs together, and hopefully that would keep them stable enough to survive the monsoon. Robert, you and I will need to work on the lumber together. I’ll shave the bark and excess wood off, but only your blades would be small enough to handle the finer carving.”

Kneeling on the ground Yue picked up a stick and made a sketch of what she needed Robert to carve. ”If you ever played with lincoln logs, it’s something like that. Except instead of a slanted roof, it’ll just have to be a flat one. My sword is too big to carve out the notches needed for the logs, but I think your weapon is better at that Robert.” Then Yue looked to Gren, going over to a nearby tree and taking out her sword. She hacked a few notches into it, but only on one side. ”Gren I need you to make notches similarly to this, on one side of the trees, and then on the opposite side of the other tree. We need to make the shelter on those trees in order to protect it from flooding. It won’t be perfect but with any luck it’ll be stable.” Yue looked to the two and gulped. She hoped they understood what she wanted and didn’t mind her ordering them around. This would be the first time she’s ever done so on her own initiative.

Gren thought about Yue’s idea and it wasn’t bad. It was almost like his plan, except he intended to dug holes to put the timber through himself, since he didn't trust the foundation of just laying down lumber. He had some questions about Yue’s idea and worried that without any nails, rope, or other binding agents, the entire thing was going to collapse in on itself once too much weight was put onto it. But it wasn’t a bad idea. ”Aight, I’m down with that plan. But I’m worried that it won’t be strong enough to support all of our weight. I mean, I’m a pretty heavy guy just by myself. Maybe a few more logs or two to make sure that the whole thing doesn’t collapse on us. Still, I’ll go ahead and notch up those trees.” Walking over to the tree that Yue had hacked up he examined the cut and turned to Yue. ”Like this? Except maybe cleaner? I can do that.”

Gren flexed his arms as he approached the four trees Yue had pointed out. Activating his semblance he started walking up the tree and as he walked he revved up his saw. He’ll have to be careful: this time he doesn’t want to cut completely through the tree. Splinters and sawdust went flying as he went to work on making this log house hideout.

As Yue explained her idea, Robert nodded along while listening. He recalled reading about wood joining once at his local library and how several civilisations would use it to create buildings if they lived in an area that lacked resources like iron to create nails. Reading about it and actually putting it into action were two very different things though, so he hoped that he’d be able to do his job correctly. He didn’t want to let everyone else down.

Despite the doubt that he had in his own ability, the boy gave the young maid a bright smile and an enthusiastic thumbs up. ”You can count on me!” he told her before setting off back to the pile of lumber he had created with what the two had cut down earlier. The boy would patiently wait for her to begin shaving off the branches and bark, smoothing out the first log before he would begin the delicate work of carving out the small indentations. For a first time woodcarver, it was actually pretty decent, though not enough that he’d be winning any awards any time soon.

Yui smiled as the two agreed to her plan. It really gave her hope that this wasn’t as silly as she thought. As Gren went to work, she and Robert went to some wood piles to start carving. THey had timber of various girths, but she wanted to make sure she can use all of them. Thus, that meant they needed to conform to the smallest of the logs. When she found what looked like the thinnest Yui went to work shaving off the branches and bark with precision, slicing a clean parallel cut into the log until it was a long cube instead of a cylinder. This would be the base in which all of the logs will be shaped.

After that Yue gave the square lumber to Robert to cut while she started to shape the other logs. She used some fire dust to heat her blade, not enough to cause the logs to catch on fire. Just enough to dry them out so they’d be stiff when they’re stacked up instead of flexible and thus bend. The last thing she wants is for the wood to warp when they’re putting this building together.

The work was long and arduous, but soon after carving up all of the lumber and finishing the prep, they had laid down the first “floor” of the shelter. Securing the square timber into the notches Gren made, then stacking the logs Robert had carved, they had created a base five feet above the ground, and then filled the gap with more carved logs and had a floor. All they needed now was to keep building up and eventually make a roof. However they were going to need more wood.

”Good job you two! But we’re not done yet. We need more wood to stack up for walls and a roof. I think maybe… Ten high on three sides, And then fifteen or so more lengthwise for the roof. As like Gren mentioned, maybe if we can we could fit a few logs underneath at the center to help stabilize the shelter. Oh! And I know we’re going to need some filler in between. This way we don’t have any cracks. So Gren and I will go back to cutting more timber down, Robert, could you make use some mortar? Water, rocks, sand, that sort of thing. It’s a dirty job but I’m relying on you to handle it, okay?” Yui handed Robert the plastic tarp she had taken from the ship. Hopefully that would help transport the mortar and keep the process clean.

”Alright, I’ll get right on it,” Robert agreed, taking the tarp and heading back to the beach where he knew there would be plenty of sand and water. He’d start searching for other materials to add to the mortar afterward. While exiting the forest, who’s branches and leaves had been catching a lot of the small droplets descending from the sky, the red haired boy finally noticed just how much time had passed. Within a few minutes, he was sure these small drops of rain would become painful as they’d begin pelting the students that now occupied this small island. They would need to pick up their pace as soon as possible.

Physical Education, RED Team

(@Krayzikk @HereComesTheSnow @FlitterFaux @Plank Sinatra @Kaithas @Awesomoman64 @Tominas @Abillioncats)

Fortunately for all involved, the teacher stepped in to still the chaos. Ferris received his red brace and put it on. He idly considered turning it inward so the color could not be seen easily, but he decided against it, citing that it could cause his teamates as much as the enemy. To the slow speaking, but well meaning faunus,-Blaine, that was his name- Ferris nodded. "I don't think that will be a problem, for all intents and purposes, my metal arm and my leg are part of me, just as much as the ones I was born with." Ferris didn't move back as Blain leaned in a bit too close and spoke too loudly. Instead he smiled confidently at the big guy. "I could do with an irritated red-head. They can be quite feisty in--"

The whistle blew. Woops, game time, Gameface on. Ferris back-peddled into a defensive position, taking the advice given. He was in position just as the ball flew into the air. It was passed down the right side to Triad, who passed it to Selena, who jumped and tossed it to Krysanthe. Amy was the closest, so Ferris hung back to cover anyone who would be close enough for Krysanthe to pass to.

-1 Minute Prior-

Blaine.

Blaine, buddy...

I'm not gonna call myself ugly or anything, but I had a feeling that anyone distracted by me was gonna get just as distracted by Ben, if not more. I'm shorter and scrawnier, even if I've gotten a lot of progress out of Mom's training program.

...

Ben's jacket shirt wordlessly joined the small pile of clothes. As his second-in-command, was I, the right hand man, truly willing to not show solidarity? This was athletic, physical competition. As you're well aware, I'm far from a show-off, but could I leave him to his lonesome like that?

My hoodie followed.

Even if I was to be outshined?

My white, school-issued cotton tee, size M, followed

Even if I was to look foolish beneath the blacksmith's forged iron?

...Just my go-to undershirt left. A nondescript wifebeater, that had in all honestly seen the bedsheets more than anything like daylight.

To turn back now would be to admit defeat.

I may be a quitter.

I may halfass everything I do.

I may have a horrendous habit of self-defeat, be it psychologically or through my own misguided action.

I am all of those things and I do all of those things, as you're painfully aware.

However.

The image of Priscilla Montgomery, aura completely drained and riddled with slices, flashed through my mind.

...I refuse to bring these to bear when I have everyone else on the line. If I backed out, that would be weakness broadcast to everyone on the field— the enemy and my own comrades. Sports are as much psychological as they are physical, and the image I needed to project is none other than that of a man who knows what he's doing.

Who knows what he is capable of.

Who knows he will not, can not, and must not fear those that stand in his path to victory.

I will bolster. I will support.

I'll have to fight, for their sakes if not my own.

This was football.

In 2009, the USDA placed a ban on the import of all Japanese beef to prevent the Japan foot-and-mouth outbreak from reaching US shores. The ban was relaxed in August 2012. Shortly thereafter, Kobe beef was imported into the US for the first time.[11]

"Red, huh?"

I caught my bracer, applying it rather snugly to my wrist. If I was going to be shirtless, I didn't want anything loose bugging me and feeling out of place.

"Works for me."

Come to think of it, I'd always favored red over blue when the choice presented itself, even if I had no qualms with the latter. Maybe it had something to do with the trim of my high school's uniforms. Maybe it was the forests to the south in the autumn, and how beautiful I always found them. Maybe...

We'll push those Sandrakers off our world.

...Shazbot
.

In any case, I had little time to mull it over.

Coach Roy had seen enough, and was ready for the game to begin in earnest

The shrill, classically gym-associated whistle sounded.

It was time.

I burst into action—

Moments too slow. Trad's team had possesion.

Quite literally, I had to switch gears straight out the gate. I'd intended a run down the side, but was forced to cut to a hard stop and react instead to the enemy's pace.

They'd set it. Not good.

"EVERYONE ON SOMEBODY!"

“Selena! Pass to Krysanthe!”

Was Trad's plan to call out passes? A risky one if I ever saw them...

He was his team's tank. It's a risky job, I would know, but not one that you did if you were dumb.

I needed to see if a pattern would emerge before I told people to start listening for his callouts. If I pulled that too early, I'd expect to be feinted within the next three passes.

For my part, I kept my eyes on the throng, trying to make sure that I filled whoever would end up as the gap in our defenses.

Red Team: The Side with Slightly Less Initiative

@Crimson Raven@Norschtalen@Abillioncats@Kaithas@Plank Sinatra@Krayzikk@HereComesTheSnow@FlitterFaux

It was time.

Breaking huddle, the two teams set up positions on the field. Blaine walked up to the midway line with a solemn grace unfitting of his size, one foot in front of the other. Scooping up a red brace, the faunus cinched it tight against his left ankle. The less he gave the opponents to catch onto during marks, the better.

Squaring up behind the line, Blaine felt his nerves clutching at his mind, sinking their claws into his stomach… He closed his eyes, took one deep breath, settling his mind into a smooth corridor of stone, one goal, a start and a finish. There was victory on the opposite side, glory and a good impression and possibly lunch, it had been a while since breakfast… But no, he had to focus on the task at hand! Right now, he had one job, and one job alone: get the ball from one side of the field to the oth-

The whistle gave a shrill blast. Trad was in the air already, his well-defined musculature sending the ball screaming towards Selena. Both teams were already moving, Blaine’s moment of resolution costing him the first heartbeat of action. Swiftly, his eyes rocketed back open, his head swiveling to follow the ball. Others were already moving, Selena was soaring in the sky with the composed grace of a particularly confident dodo from a catapult, Krysanthe was bolting down the pitch for a catch, but Selena was hesitating, eyes flitting around the pitch. The defenders were doing their jobs, just as Blaine knew they would.

Blaine was a simple man, generally quick on his feet, and the rules were exceedingly clear on what happened when someone was tackled. He could jump after her, but he knew that speed was her forte. That being said, if nothing was done, she would pass and the moment would be gone, the ball well on its way towards the dreaded Blue Team's first six points.

Unthinkable.

Thinking quickly, he made his decision. The shoe was worth it.

With the precision of a well-oiled machine, the student lowered his bulk to the ground, lined his foot up, braced his right foot against the back of his left shoe’s heel, dug his toe into the turf, and felt his aura drain as he activated his semblance.

A loud popping noise signaled his launch, his shoe exploding from a size thirteen to a ten-foot long elevator, the rapid expansion paired with the thrust from his right leg launching him bodily towards his silver-haired opponent in the same trajectory as a graceful, one-winged eagle made of lead and dreams. It wasn't pretty, but it would get the job done. If she came from a catapult, he would enter the field from a cannon, the school-issue footwear falling off like the first stage of a rocket launch, falling back to the earth at its normal size with an anticlimactic thud.

This was for the Temple of Iron.

This was for the Red Team!

This was for FOOTBALL!!!

Oswald Connoly- Survival

Yep, that...that was about what he expected. He'd heard a bit about this girl. Nothing truly bad, but enough to know that conversing with her wouldn't lead to a..."normal" conversation. As he looked at Sangue, some wood started piling up, courtesy of his lovely assistants. Kneeling down to grab a few bits that he could cut down to serve as tinder, Oswald drew his sword as he started to speak.

"I'm Oswald...Oswald Connoly." Taking a short breath as he began peeling strips of bark off to serve as tinder, Oswald glanced back at Sangue. "Would you be able to help? I'm...trying to start a signal fire. I need...leaves, anything that makes smoke. Could you get something for me?" Talking, especially while doing something, was starting to get a bit tiresome.

He could not wait until he was done healing.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Blue Team

Krysanthe was pleased to see their team had won the ball and it was swiftly moved to Selena(who had decided to keep her shirt) with the plan to pass the ball to Krysanthe herself. There was a rush of movement all around the field as all the players tried to figure out where to be, what to do, who to cover, when to move. The two of them however, moved down the field with definite purpose. Selena seemed to spend a moment in consideration before leaping into the air with a sudden shout. It seemed she wanted to pass to Krysanthe without risking interception by those around her, a bold move. There was a moment for Krysanthe to react, in which one of the enemy team took the chance to try to intercept Selena. "Go over!" Krysanthe shouted in response, and a moment later she rocketed into the air as well, her liberal application of gravity allowing herself to surpass the two in height. She could only hope that Selena would managed to get the ball over the blocker and to Krysanthe. Given she did, Krysanthe had no intention of giving the other team the chance to react, and planned on bicycle kicking the ball high into the air over the enemy's goal. After all, it didn't matter how high the ball went, forbearing hitting the ceiling, as long as it went in-between the goal posts. Plus the higher up it was, the harder it would be to guard it.

Skye read through the pamphlet carefully as the pregame shenanigans unfolded around her. I'm sure we played this variant in Rokhang once or twice. It wasn't very popular though and I'm not sure this is quite the same. I think I'll just have to fo my best. At least this isn't a cliff challenge. But I think this... might be fun. It's been a long time since I got to play a game.

A cold shiver brought the soaked faunus back to reality. She realized she had been standing there absorbed by the rulebook for quite some time. Apparently in that time one of the players from the other side had switched to theirs and several people on both sides had gotten rid of their shirts. Skye realized her own wet shirt and jacket were probably sapping more heat than they were holding im. But- Wait. Is that same girl on both teams? Am I delerious? She rubbed her eyes and shook her head, then concentrated hard on each girl. They were the same person, in looks at least. What... did I miss? And where is Jericho?

Skye was about to ask what was going on but it looked like the game was about to start. She vaguely recalled something about being assigned a defensive role once more so she backed up and found what looked like a good position.

She watched the start of the game intently and felt a rush of excitement as the opposing team quickly gained the advantage. It would be up to defense to keep that advantage from turning into a goal.

For the moment Skye forgot her weariness and discomfort and pain, focusing intently on the ball.

A Crash at the Horizon

@Crimmy@Silvan Haven@Lucius Cypher@Azereiah@Guess Who@Ryonara@Abillioncats@Ayazi@Plank Sinatra

Stella watched, amusingly plucking the pen from its resting point on her lip and creasing her mouth into a gentle smile, ever so slightly closing her eyes and allowing her head to sink just a little. Her hands effortlessly glided down to her blouses top button. Stella’s hair was tossed around her, dripping in front of her eyes and over her chest, but she sat frozen with a smile on her face. Her lesson was working and her students were growing.

She fiddled with her outfit incessantly, but her eyes were transfixed on her students. There was one obvious outlier in the group in more ways than one that caught her eye, but she focused her eyes on the home they were building. It looked like a good foundation, but wood would have a hard time standing up against torrential rain without leaking furiously.

The goal was twofold, of course. There are two options presented to a group of shipwrecked students there is something that will be perceived as the easy way out, signalling a ship in order to be lifted to rescue, or the hard way. The monsoon. But it seemed as though the students ruled out the ability to use one of their potential escapes. That much was untrue.

Stella, with renewed vigor and zeal strutted her way to examine the coming events, closing the small door behind her.

The students on the beach would hear a massive boom, any who glanced up would notice the airship approaching the island head on, and it would be there in a matter of one to two minutes. As it approached, however, the storm clouds also began to roll in. What they did next would partially decide their fate. Until next class, anyway. The house the students had begun constructing would obviously not be enough to signal the ship, which meant that if they wanted to escape they would have to put their trust in that hurricane of a woman standing there confidently on the beach facing her exit.

Once more Stella's voice would breach the clouds and be audible to all students once more. She commanded their attention as the physical manifestation of their choices approached.

"It is time for you all to make your choice to flee or fly." She said, making sure that the students knew this was a choice they would have to commit to.

Everything happened quickly and Selena wasn't given much time to think about it. Her plan to be the only one in the air was about to be shot down like she was as someone from the opposing team was rocketing towards her. However she also saw Krysanthe also jump super high into the air. If she just had a few more seconds Selena could easily pass the ball to Krysanthe and land safely, but in this split-second moment she had to choose to protect herself or the ball. "Krysanthe!" Selena passed the ball high into the air where Krysanthe would hopefully catch it. Unfortunately it wasn't a clean pass either and went a little wide. Selena couldn't do much about it before Blaine's head rammed right into her chest, knocking Selena out of the air and sending her back to the ground. She recovered only enough to land on her feet but immediately took a knee. The blow was heavy and knocked the wind right out of her and would leaving her stunned for a precious few seconds. She could only hope that Krystane or the others could recover and score because for a moment Selena was out of commission.

Gratia Mindaro - Survival

Lorena Negasi, the Mistralese girl decided, was batshit insane. Her proposal was ridiculous in every way, beyond the bounds of what the assignment had likely expected of them. The risks involved were many, and had they been in a real world situation instead of a false, lobotomised version of reality, it would have likely ended in the woman's organs staining the sand red like a failed mother splattering a miscarriage across her bathroom floor. In this limited simulacrum, however, the points of failure were significantly minimised, and given the determination she could see in those blazing, angry eyes, something Gratia had to acknowledge as possible. It was laughable that there was appeal to some retarded plan her classmate likely shat out within minutes, but there was truth to the fact that the alternatives were pathetic and toothless.

In what fucking world did she live in that she was willing to implement it?

"Fine." Her hand grasped onto Lorena's. "I'll follow your lead."

If nothing else, it would be something tangible.

Survival

He didn't seem well.

Nevertheless, Sangue nodded as she turned away to find some leaves. There were some that were with the branches brought to Oswald, though they were probably not enough to start a fire. She glanced at his direction before heading off her way.

She went missing the midst of the trees that had yet to be cut down.

A few good minutes passed before she eventually returned, the front of her torso and head covered by a giant bushel of leaves.

Slowly approaching Oswald, she steadily held onto the leaves. Rain had begun to fall by small droplets by the time she put them down near him. Normally, she wouldn’t be able to carry that much, but the prosthetic helped her ability to carry things quite noticeably. The addition of an arm made its differences.

She remained silent, taking note of how his condition appeared to be.

Glancing at the wood he held, she watched him peel them for a split moment. Without a word, she quietly sat across him. Slipping out the claw from her prosthetic, she let it form into shape before she peeled the wood with him.

She noticed the rain got harder. Glancing at Oswald, she took note that there was apparently a ship heading towards them. Sangue did not leave him, however, as she seemed intent with staying by his side for the time being.

I’m a new soul, I came to this strange world, hoping I could learn a bit about how to give and take.

Tanner took a drag off his cigarette, his boots thumping against the stone floor of the cavern. The ember glowed a little brighter as he inhaled, illuminating the cave walls in spiraling orange. Skypiercer was loose in his left hand, occasionally flicking left and right in easy swipes to swat away smaller Grimm.

He came by a side passage, the tromp of his boots pausing as he looked down it--the marks of tooling were obvious on the sides, not a natural cave like the rest of this place. He took one more drag off his cigarette, glancing down as it reached the filter. The Hunter rolled his eyes, throwing it on the ground and grinding it out on the stone floor.

These things always took too long. And knowing his luck, they’d get dragged out yet longer by whatever stupidity they had planned for him at the end of this tunnel.

But since I came here, felt the joy and the fear, found myself making every possible mistake.

He hummed softly as he continued on, his eyes glowing softly red. The pack of cigarettes found their way out of his pocket, one carefully extending and sticking in the corner of his mouth. He didn’t light it yet--no reason to spook his prey of sorts. He’d read the file on this mess--usual stuff, in all honesty, bunch of kooky people who had gathered around some Grausam class Grimm and were worshipping it. Ordinarily that was a self-rectifying issue--Grimm cared about as much for their human and Faunus allies as they did for their enemies--but these particular loons had found an Infernal Argus. Which was an issue. Because the damn thing was likely to just sit there and sleep until something irritated it, at which point it would become a Horrible Problem. And cultists had a way of being irritating.

La-la la la, la-la-la-la la la

Another pause in the steady procession of his boots, a slight glow coming from down the hall. His eyes flicked up to the ceiling of the cavern, Skypiercer following his gaze to the apex and knocking some dirt free--

Conduit. Fairly cleverly hidden under a dirty part of the ceiling, but once you’ve been to one evil cult cave hideout you’ve been to them all. Also helps when you have such an intimate familiarity with the leader of a particular band.

A click and his blade started to hum with electricity, then stabbed the cable--

And it all went dark.

***
William Essersmit was not having the best of days. Cult Security Breach #4 had happened, and by the looks of things this might be the last one. He’d gotten word through the usual channels that Beacon was sending some kind of Grimm expert out to deal with their little operation, and while that was easily enough dealt with… You didn’t kill a Hunter and remain inconspicuous.

Now that selfsame Hunter had managed to find their hideout and shut off the power with disturbing ease.

It was no matter. They had backup lighting and power would be back online as soon as the others could get the generator started. The Argus stood far behind him, motionless, their offerings heaped at its feet. The Hunter couldn’t be allowed to kill it while it slept, nor awaken it before the prophesied day.

The red glow of lighting didn’t really reach into the tunnel, William’s eyes straining to make out the form of the Hunter he knew had to be coming--he could hear the thump, thump, thump of boots.

Then it stopped, and a flame flickered to life in the tunnel, illuminating a man’s face, his eyes glowing red as he lit a cigarette, taking a single draw off of it while he put his lighter away, a grin coming to his face.

“I don’t suppose we could talk this out? I’d like to share the good word with ya, William.”

Essersmit was already in motion, his blade cleaving out for the Hunter’s neck, arm, side--and was met with a calm bend backward, step to the side, and deflection with the other man’s spear, each looking almost lazy and tired.

“Figures. Didn’t think you’d go for it, but still had to try.”

Tanner’s spear leapt up, its tip diving for William’s chest, twisting to the side as he tried to pivot away, the tip flaring to life with a concussive blast and slamming into his flesh--

His Aura rose to meet it--

”No, Will!” his sister’s voice called out, as the Griever ripped into her--

--and shattered, the blade piercing him deep. He fell to his knees on the cave floor, looking up with a snarl at the other man. To his surprise, the Hunter didn’t finish him, looking out across the cave, the glow of his eyes intensifying.

“Think my friend’ll take care of the rest of your little band o’ heathens. Can’t beat all of you at once, you know.”

A terrible grinding sound echoed through the cave, making the spatter of feet cease--and the Argus began to move. Its battle axe arose from the cave floor, light gleaming off the wicked edge.

Then the screams started. Stopped.

The grinding came closer.

And closer.

And stopped.

***

Tanner puffed again, looking up at the imposing monster of metal and hate looming over him, the eviscerated corpse of the cultist--William Essersmit, the file said--below it, providing a gruesome cushion for its horrible blade. He hated dealing with Argus, on the whole--he couldn’t really control them, just wake them up, calm them down a bit, and make them unconscious of his presence.

Luckily, this one seemed fairly young.

He started to hum again as he turned away and walked back down the tunnel, pausing once he reached daylight once more, his eyes looking over the assorted explosives he’d set at the entrance. Now that he knew where the Argus was, he could be certain it wouldn’t be disturbed by an explosion of the size he was intending. His fingers grasped the cigarette, lighting the fuse on the initial charge as he walked away.

A series of explosions rocked the cave entrance, sealing it forever.

Sure, an electronic detonator might be more practical. But you’d lose the style points.

Back at Beacon, the tromping of boots met linoleum floors. Mission complete.

Tanner stuck his hands in his coat pockets, looking up at the ceiling of the hall. Was odd he didn’t have to turn anything in this go round--normally he’d have something for Port. Still, he couldn’t complain. Less complicated, the better, especially for something that wasn't a usual mission. He was less “catch the bad guy”, more “catch the cool critter for class.”

Damn, he wish that Essersmit guy had been willing to talk. Introspection was only good for so long, then you wanted a conversation partner.

The loud sound of turbines howling out as the craft approached the mooring at Beacon. Blaire stared out the window at the massive academy complex. Replacing her sister at the academy had seemed really silly at first, but as usual, Skyra was very good at convincing people... well, mostly her. Apparently, her convincing skills weren't as refined when it came to others. But in the end, going to Beacon was the only legal way to become a huntress, so she had to go here and Skyra offering her place up in exchange was a good deal for both of them. Especially now that Skyra had missions to do.

With a bit of a jerk, the docking clamps caught the aircraft and Blaire had to concentrate to not fall over, but she managed.
Why did they have to make this docking jerky like this...

She shook her head and proceeded to disembark, her blade clinking a bit as she moved across the gangway and onto the cobblestones of Beacon.
Looking around, she saw that everything lay quiet, probably because Blaire did in face come to the school during 5th period and not before or after a period.

Whatever, it didn't really matter. Steadily and assuredly, Blaire marched towards the entrance of the academy hoping to find something there that would lead her to wherever she was needed to report in.

In the lobby, though, she encountered somebody she presumed to be a teacher, a gruff dude, sure, but he did not seem like a student at all.
"Hey, you. Are you a teacher here? New student here, I was told to report in somewhere. Where do I need to head to?", she casually asked the man. Rank did not seem to matter to Blaire much and as such, she seemed rather crude and impolite.

Survival

It took them a little while, but the cabin was nearly done. With Gren and Robert’s help, Yue was able to accomplish much more than she thought she could. More support to keep the cabin stable, a pewter mortar to keep the cabin water tight, she even made it space and homely with a makeshift fireplace and chimney. Not exactly a luxury getaway retreat, but for surviving the monsoon, it’ll have to do. Normally drying the mortal would take hours that they didn’t have, but Yue was nothing if not efficient. Taking out a dust card from her pocket Yue imbue her blade with fire. Compared to some others, Yue might not be as skilled with a sword, or have their sheer ability, but when it came to manipulating dust, Yue liked to think she was second to none.

And using her control over dust, her blade radiates warmth. But not just that, but she was evaporating the moisture in the mortal, to solidify them. She did the same to the wood itself to make them stiffer and stronger for the coming storm, so that they wouldn’t bend or break as they get pounded by the rain for who knows how long. And this all only took her a few minutes to do, even as the rain started to pour in. If needed she could even do this for the next few hours. However she did notice something amiss. There was no smoke; she wasn’t sure if maybe whoever was responsible for the signal fire wasn’t able to complete it or simply did it somewhere she couldn’t see. But Yue was worried that the airship she saw earlier wouldn’t be able to find them.

Yue knew what she had to do. After finishing the cabin, she ran out to the beaches and called out to everyone as loud as she could. ”The cabin is finished! Get inside before you get caught in the rain!” And as she said this, Yue raised her blade into the air. Concentrating on the dust in her blade, Yue fired off a weak, but very vibrant, very long beam of fire from her sword. An attack like this was flashy but lacked punch behind it. But she wasn’t trying to hurt anything, but get the attention of any airship around here. She’d maintain this beam of fire for as long as the dust in her blade could, which was about ten straight minutes. She hopes that someone would come to investigate the mysterious pillar of flame on this island.

Oswald Connoly- Survival

And now began the rain. Of course. Because nothing could go well for him, huh?

Sighing, Oswald dropped the wood. He wasn't even going to bother. "Well...unless we wanna waste some burn dust...this shit ain't lighting." His face clearly betrayed his frustration. "Just great...and this was actually going alright." Jerking his head in the direction of the shelter the others were building, Oswald sighed. "Might as well see what we can do to help them before the rain gets unbearable."

Standing up, Oswald groaned in pain as his ribs cried out. "Mother of...." Gods, he was pain. Trying to hide it didn't help, either. Instead, he turned to the girl near him. "Sorry. Broken ribs..." Making sure he had his gear, Oswald hobbled over to the makeshift shelters.

"Fire's fucked. At least this thing got finished, I guess...thanks." A pained cough punctuated his greeting.

Great.

She nodded.

Putting down the wood, she trailed after Oswald. He did seem hurt, though it was apparent that it was a lot worse than she initially thought. A quick bow was sent to his way, though it was easy to miss it.

Sangue stuck closer to Oswald than before, glancing at him occasionally as they walked over to the shelters. As she drew near the shelters, however, a thought struck Sangue as she looked around her surroundings momentarily.

She wondered where Lauren had gone to.

While a Huntress launched a beam of fire into the air, Sangue glanced at the shelters. It was raining, and Lauren was nowhere to be seen. There were people, some she had grown a bit more familiar with, around the shelters.

Sangue had slain many Grimm on the boat, and she stayed by Oswald's side. But now there were a good amount of people nearby.

...I should find her...

Without a word, she turned to Oswald once more, whether or not he had noticed her, and made another bow- almost apologetically. She then silently walked past the shelter.

The rain splashed against her skin and clothes as she headed in the direction of where she had last seen her friend. Her wet clothes weighed and clung onto her body, but it wasn't discouraging her from walking in the rain.

Beacon Academy-Survival Class-Beryl Harken

"Keep going, I'm going to try something."

The half shouted words came from a couple yards to Yue's left. Beryl stood with arms outstretched above her, her legs planted solidly against the raising wind. The other girl's face showed intense concentration as the otter faunus all but glared up at the dark sky above.

Rain hissed as it impacted the shining column of flame. First only the occasional drop, then more and more as they were supernaturally redirected. Beryl gritted her teeth as she reached out with her semblance. This was hard. she wasn't used to dealing with so many distinct pieces of water , nor could she effect it along the entire length of the beam.

So she chose a spot as high as she could reach and started concentrating water around it. Collecting globs of the liquid and then letting the beam boil it away in massive clouds of steam. Not too much at once or it could douse the fire. She couldn't be overly cautious either, as the wind of the monsoon was tearing away the steam as soon as it was made.

The end result was a bright glowing beam with a twisted and chaotic white cloud starting midway up that glowed with an internal light. Perhaps not Beryl's best work, but it was certainly noticeable. Even if the effort was likely to drain her aura almost completely.

"Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaah..." Emerald's chest rose up and down as she lay on the beach, looking straight at the airship everyone was getting all excited about.

She may have overdone the flying a bit, she was feeling a bit tuckered out. She was thinking about just laying there for a while longer when it started to rain. "Drat."

With a sigh she got up on her feet, dusting off any sand that clinged to her body. She glanced around, looking for familiar faces. Luckily for her, she spotted Oswald not too far away. He was pretty easy to spot, he had this depressing aura around him.

She sprinted over towards him, "Heeeeey Oswald, what ya doing?"

Lauren's grin sharpened as her hand shook the Mistralian girl's confidently, but their moment of Jacobin female bonding was broken by the twin thunderclaps of an arriving airship and - well, arriving thunder. Ever the people person, Lauren's prediction of Estelle's duplicitous nature had come true before the eyes of the class. Leave it to a white bitch to come five minutes too soon.

"Weeeeell," Lauren drawled, stretching out her word and her limbs, back arching as she drew up to her full height and withdrew the folded weapon from beneath her jacket. Lauren drew her arms through the sleeves of the leather garment and felt the familiar, snug fit against her body with a grin. Whether they were in a sim or not, her jacket was endearingly real - and so was her new gat.

Lauren flicked her tongue along the tip of her thumb and held it up in the direction of the airship, testing the impending storm winds that tousled her hair with greater and greater insistence.

"I think that's our cue, friend-o mine. Hold onto something tight, and--"

Gratia, from behind Lauren, grabbed onto the con artist's breasts with all the finesse and passion of a fundamentalist's training bra.

"-wew, and let go when you think is best, yeah? We're not gonna have much of a timetable here, Grat, so wherever you think you can stick the jump you go for it. The hatch we're looking for will be near the bow of the ship, but the noses on these things are weirdly elongated, so once we're inside we'll need to take a quick stroll to the cockpit. Got it? A-one-fuckin' awesome. Testing, testing, Hautdesert!"

The package Lauren Negasi had been carrying under one arm for most of class, much like her team captain's, was an astonishing grower.

What had been a rectangular, beam-shaped wedge about the length of an arm had transformed twice - first unfurling into an exceedingly pretty one-bladed axe, ornamented in a jade color lighter than Lauren's eyes and burnished with brass and gold ivy leaves along the shaft, and then transforming yet again into an enormous projectile weapon that could only be described as a jumbo fucking ballista. It planted itself in the sands as they slowly turned to mush beneath the oncoming torrent, with a crank vaguely reminiscent of one of Ben's original tonfa jutting out towards the back of the weapon. Lauren, easily lugging the symbiotic, expressionless Gratia over her shoulders, planted her feet squarely along the center of the weapon, pulling the crank back and twisting it a couple times. Off in the distance, she saw a pillar of steam attempting valiantly to signal the airship. Lauren grinned. As long as Beryl could keep it up, she would have the perfect landing zone in a minute.

"Oh yeah, Grat, and the most important thing is to--FUCK--"

A large beam of energy was starting to glow from the back of Lauren's newly christened wave motion bolt thrower. Liftoff was inevitable now, whether either girl was beginning to silently have second thoughts about this arrangement or not.

The sands gave way into a pillar of their own as Hautdesert took flight for the first time, a screaming, jubilant pilot riding astride her as a normal twenty-one year old girl might ride a skateboard. Together, Lauren and Grat soared like the superheroes they had each always idolized, and there was not a storm god worshipped on Remnant whose fury could pluck the two Huntresses from the sky, nor could any of them match the valor of Lorena Negasi's hysterical cry.

Not even the wind itself could rip the volume from that cry.

"yyyyyyyeeeeeEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA H A H A H A H A H A H A H A H A H A H A H A H A H A H A H A H A H A H A ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! "

While a storm god certainly had no chance of knocking the two girls out of the sky, a little bit of bad luck could certainly do wonders for sending their plan nose diving back to the ground that once lay beneath their feet.

...

It was a good thing than that the redhaired boy, who's semblance made him more dangerous than a black cat crossing your path while walking under a ladder and dropping a mirror, hadn't been paying much attention to his surroundings. "Did you guys hear that?" he asked no one in particular, looking around at his surroundings. He turned to the left to see if he could find the source of the noise. Then right. Nothing. "Ah well, must not be anything important."
