"Our Liege, the Duke of Brittony, has charged us with a grand Quest to rival the tales of old!"
—Ser Giles de Cerneau, Knight of the Duke's Household

The Dukedom of Brittony is only a small peninsula, jutting out the side of the much larger landmass that makes up the powerful Kingdom of Gaulle, but it is one of the most influential demesnes on the continent. Its industry is nearly equal to that of Gaulle, its banks and merchant guilds some of the largest and most powerful in the land, and its noble court famous from war-torn Hispania to the Imperial lands in Thraecia.

The Duke of Brittony and the King of Gaulle have long been at odds with one another. The latter views Brittony as nothing more but a rightful extension of his realm, his avarice only multipled by the great wealth of the Dukedom. On the other hand, the Dukes of Brittony have fiercely protected their independence for generations, all the way back to the times when the Old Empire held dominion over most of Gaulle.

Their latest feud concerns the Duke of Brittony's betrothal to the daughter of the Count of Savoy, a rich and powerful lord to the south of Gaulle, near Italia. The King of Gaulle has held ambitions of marrying his son to the Savoyard Princess, and had made several very expensive diplomatic overtures to that end. Thus her betrothal to a different lord, and none other than the Duke of Brittony, represents an intolerable insult to the Gaullish King and his dynasty.

Now word has reached the Duke's court that his would-be bride has been intercepted on her way to Brest, the capital of Brittony, by agents of the King of Gaulle, and is now being held in the royal Gaullic court of Lutecia. Rumour has it that the King plans on forcibly marrying the Princess and his son as soon as the latter is of age.

This is where your tale begins. As a prestigious, well-respected member of the Duke's court, you have been charged by his Grace, along with several other of his courtiers, to rescue his bride and see her safely to Brest. Your unique skills will make you indispensable to this small party; perhaps you are an arcane mage, a learned priest, a famous knight or trusted guardsman, an influential aristocrat, or even a wealthy merchant.

Whatever your background, you and your party face a daunting task ahead of you, but one fit for the tales of old. You will face down any number of challenges and obstacles, travel across Gaulle and perhaps beyond, and meet all manner of man and beast. Fame, glory, riches, and the goodwill of one of the most powerful lords in medieval Europe will be awarded to you upon your success; for this is the Duke's Quest.

Duke's Quest is a small-party quest-style roleplay inspired by 14th century Europe, with a few historical tweaks for flavor. The full setting can be found under the "setting" tab. Gameplay will focus on this small party as they travel across Europe, defeating & outsmarting adversaries and overcoming obstacles in their quest to save the Princess of Savoy and return her to Brittony. I have a tentative plot in place, but I'm open to divergence from it depending on what everyone feels.

As for characters, I'm looking to have a small but diverse set of no more than six. When creating your character, feel free to be liberal with the setting, within reason of course. By that I mean you can whip up any kind of background within the setting, just don't go creating new kingdoms or super advanced technologies or whatever. If your character fits in a fantasy 14th century Europe, you should be good to go!

I suppose I have a question regarding the state of the plagues of the 14th century and how prevalent they are in this version of the world with mild magery and clerical power actually existing. My initial plan is to make a doctor, but if the mundane doctors are obsolete due to magery then I have a few backup ideas.

@Fading Memory Physicians are still very much in demand. Disease and pestilences are still highly misunderstood and thus difficult to treat with magic, and the plague was still a calamitous event, though perhaps not as much as it was historically thanks to magecraft.

Quick question: as my character is probably gonna be an illusion-based hedge mage type, what is your stance on someone having a fantastic creature in their lineage? Say, they're a changeling, stolen away in their youth by the faeries; or a distant relative is one of the mythical, secretive dwarves of Norse mythology?

Essentially, the magic may come from study, but may also have something to do with their blood.

@Chicken I'm okay with you having it in your character's mythos, though I'd say keep the relation distant.

Cool! I'll write something up in the morning. If I'm applying with a mage, I want my mage to be distinct from the other one both in personality, specialty, and how he conducts his magic.

I may still roll up a not-a-mage. We'll see. But distant inhuman ancestry leaves a lot of possibilities either way.

Would it be okay if I took a small while regarding my char application? I'm in a bit of a jar of pickles, but it won't delay things too long. I just need to de-stress and get some homework done (unfortunately, not simultaneously.)

See now I feel a bit guilty, because as I was doing research and digging for the physician idea, I suddenly got heavily inspired by re-reading the setting info and had a different idea entirely take precedence in my mind. I'll be writing up a character today and unless I gets sidetracked should have it up today as well.

The rampant paganism in England is what triggered this sudden inspiration.

Do note: I am perfectly open to making a more traditional knight character in light of all the seemingly more cerebral characters we'll be having. It's not a big deal for me to draft up a new character concept. And I understand Raffaele is a bit of an oddball himself, so it's cool if you would just rather not have him! Adhering to the themes of the story comes first.

I've got an incomplete sheet to show. I'll pause it for now as I realize we may need a more martially inclined character, but to give a general impression of what I was originally going for, click the hider below. But again, I am perfectly willing to make a knightly member of the court instead.

The rough summary: he's an illusionist and overall prankster with an academic background and a distant Fey heritage that displays via dwarfism, an odd appearance, and a talent for trickery-focused magic. He's not a member of the Court, but I'm thinking he has a friendly relationship to someone in court (perhaps the Duke or the Court Mage?) and has volunteered to help save the Princess as a favor for a friend.

Once I know whether I should continue making this character or make a knight, I'll get to work again.

Have no fear, I should have stated this clearly before; In Lieu of a physician, I opted for a Knights Templar. Touching on similar themes as the doctor [paganism, plague, sickness, etc], but going about them differently and bringing what is essentially a religious knight into the group.

All these mages had me amused and itching to be something heavily juxtaposed

@VoiD Would it be possible for my character to be from a Welsh town? :) It's not quite clear on your map how small Wales actually is!

I didn't know if an idea I had would be passable to fit within your restraints, but for my character I was thinking of including a 'Failed Crusade For England' if you think it's appropriate to have had such a thing happen in recent years. A Knights Templar character reeling off of a failed crusade being sent on a quest for the duke of his land is roughly the gist for the character I've been writing up.

If you don't want such a big thing to be added, then I have other angles I can focus on and it's not a problem, but I wanted to pitch it first to see what you thought.

@EldarionI Sure!

@Fading Memory I like the idea, how about it turned out somewhat like the Crusade for Alexandria? I.E. It failed to garner enough support among powerful lords, and ended up being a failed attack on a city in England.

@Bazmund I'll look over this soon, along with the previous CS!

I really like this idea. My biggest question and concern though is what level of advanced this will be.

I'm only able to work from a cell phone right now, so anything to crazy and I won't be able to keep up.

As a role player I can keep up with any skill level, this is more of a thumbs hurting and phone spell check/grammar problem. Lol.

I have an idea for a character that I'd like to run by. They'd basically be a Provence Princess that is looking to marry into Gaulle to try and become the next Queen of France when the current ruler's son inherits the throne. Assisting the cause to rescue the Savoyard Princess would be very much in her interests, as removing her from the marriage options would could force Gaulle into a situation where she is now the marriage target for the Prince.
