Where to even start... Hello there, I'm Strange. I'm actually VERY new to roleplay, but I am not new to writing, or forums for that matter. I've written and published a few books whose names will remain anonymous, so I'd like to think I'm pretty okay at it. I'm obviously not a God tier writer, but I couldn't imagine roleplay being horribly different right? Same concept, similar mechanics, etc. I'm kind of rambling, but uh...

That being said, I'd like if someone were to show me the ropes? Maybe do a practice run with me, something of the sort?

Welcome :)

This can get you going on the site, and this can get you going on roleplaying. Feel free to shoot a PM for questions or further ideas.

The most basic idea of roleplaying is that it is a collaborative story, typically told in back and forth segments from the perspectives of the characters under your control and then from the perspectives of the characters under the other player's control.

I like to think of roleplaying as collaborative writing. :p

Is it relatively active? The closest thing to roleplay I've done is probably DnD, so that's all I have to go off of.

Is it possible to find people who can just sit down and collaborate on their writing for hours, as opposed to sitting around for posts?

All those questions depends on the partners you find. There will always be people who ghost you eventually. It's just how the world works.

It is possible to find someone sit down collaborate. Are you talking about something like sharing a google doc?

I'm in favor of waiting for posts, allowing you feel time to relax and brainstorm, but I can't complain either about the collaborative thing, since I haven't really tried it.

Hmmmm... I guess.

I just don't want to get trapped into waiting a week for a post. I'd like to have at least a couple a day or something.

Welcome welcome. If you've done DnD, role playing really isn't all that different. There's just a lot less uh... Chance. What genres are you looking for, anyways?

@Strange

That definitely depends on the partners you find. Some people post 1-6 times a day, while other might post 1-2 a week. :p

@tex Genre wise, I want to try avoiding the sci fi sort of stuff. I personally have nothing against it, but it's what all my writing has been so far and I would like to branch out. Maybe a bit of a cutesy slice of life, or some kind of medieval thing?

I'll have to find someone somewhat active anyhow.

Roleplaying is inherently a pretty active activity, but it makes up in burst activity with the fact that people have easily dwindling interests. Expect to be dumped once, twice, one hundred times, often without warning, or if you're lucky with a polite 'I have no time/interest anymore, sorry'. I've lost count of the failed gigs. I don't even care about the count. It's the few successful gigs that do come together that keep me interested; kinda like how a true relationship works.

Burst posting, speed posting, etc sounds along the alley of what you're looking for, which certainly happens, though good luck finding someone who does that and produces something with fair quality. Chat roleplaying is probably the better method for you, which again has that stipulation that chat roleplaying is often of lesser quality/effort per post (though not always, depends on who you get). In any case, it's relatively unusual for how the site works, and so it is something you'd want to make an interest check for. From there you'll need patience. Even when you get someone, you'll still need patience.

And if you're dropped by someone, well, I find the best mechanism for that is to simply take whatever was created in what little was put together and stick it into my own lore. No loss when it's all blended into your content in the end.

@Strange If you're looking for active writers, especially people willing to post more than once a day, you're going to have a hard time finding any group RPs. If you're looking for a semi-active group, I am hosting a mid-low fantasy gig and my current crew at least posts semi-daily. I'm also open for 1x1's assuming a concept grabs my attention, but I stray far away from slice of life. Just pm me if you have any ideas.

Otherwise, check 1x1's for fast partners. I only know a few, and I've more or less abducted them for all my stuff recently.

Not speedposting, if it means having a sentence or two.

I was thinking maybe a paragraph or two. Action > Reaction > thoughts / descriptions.

The issue here is the rare chance of this actually being viable to find. Not impossible, but I'd be a little surprised if you found this on a regular basis, in the right timezone, and with the right degree of quality for ya.

Something that I think is prevalent on this site is the fact that people simply don't have the time to sit down and crank out a paragraph of good material frequently during the day, as that's time that is typically spent on the job or whatnot. Otherwise, chat platforms (though good luck for finding the expected quality) may be a good direction to look into alongside hte guild.

That's true. I should have taken other people's occupations into account.

I'm an author, and self employed at that, and coupled with an ADD brain I do a lot of stuff at once, mostly constant typing.

Guys, we found Sarah J. Maas's alias! *gasp*

Pfft! I wish...

Anyhow, CSes (character sheets) are probably the biggest hurdle to get over if you're new to RP). Check out @Lady Amalthea's CS templatesto start. They are amazingly detailed and I love them. If she wore a ring IRL, I would kiss it as if I was meeting the Pope instead.

If I was Sarah J. Maas, I'd be sure to tell everybody ^^

Sadly, I'm not really famous for anything.

@Strange Welcome to our little slice of insanity. Padded rooms are on the right, straitjackets are on the left. As far as jumping off, yes, being an author will help you with this. Just think of this as a collaborate book than a single author and you should do fine. There are finer points to learn but it will vary by each GM. In my signature are links to several tutorials and other resources, a more complete list can be found in the articles section in the index. Have any questions, just drop a line to myself or one of the numerous people on the forum. It's a great place.

@Mistiel Oh I just gotta ~wanders over and gives Mistiel a huge hug~ You are such a doll!
