I abhor RE4 and what it did to the series. Also, more of a Claire kind of gal.

RE 4 didn't do anything to the series. You cant blame a fresh idea for the crap that follows it.

Claire deserved better than that god awful Code Veronica.

And you still haven't answered my question, sir.

I was so pissed when they changed her voice actress, lol.

Code Veronica is still one of my favorites of the classic RE games. I'm less critical on the "action era" of Resident Evil, but I definitely see the issues and I actually prefer them to Capcom ripping off Amnesia and similar games when they made the recent one.

Agreed, Alyson Court is actually a really cool person too. I didn't get a chance to interview her, though I did sit in on the interview with D.C Douglas. A lot of people disliked Code Veronica because it had too much backtracking, allegedly. See, here's an unpopular opinion for you - more games need backtracking in them (and tank controls). I still play RE2 even today, twenty years on. They should have kept Alfred on as a recurring antagonist, he was amazing. He chewed the scenery and loved life.

Oh, and fuck the Albinoid. They overhyped that thing, all these files saying "Whoa, it's some really dangerous shit that'll mess your day up!" and it's just some salamander thing in a pool that jobs out.

I like the backtracking in Code Veronica, Outbreak, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil, and all of those type of games. I still go back to Code Veronica and Zero to this day because of how engaging they were as games and how immersed I was in this kooky b-movie like story that was as bombastic as it was tense.

Outbreak, man. I remember hooking up the ethernet cable on the PS2 and getting the internet to work on it just so I could play that online with some friends. Games need more places like the Spencer mansion, just this big house that you have to investigate and explore, and solve puzzles in - with monsters.

The ironic and tragic thing is Resident Evil: Outbreak in today’s internet-centric market would sell really ridiculously well.

I've said it many times before, the biggest tragedy of Outbreak is that it was ahead of its time. It was released when the online architecture it needed, didn't exist yet.

Indeed. The best thing you can do is find sketchy private servers these days, but I’d honestly just prefer an Outbreak remake. Capcom has no idea what they are sitting on.

Code Veronica is my favorite. Four does not even make my top list of Resident Evil titles, lol.

Also, I did not like the newest incarnation of the series.

I feel like Resident Evil 7 doesn’t become “Resident Evil” until the second half of the game and by then a lot of my enjoyment tends to be curbed by the fatigue of tolerating the approach and direction that was decided upon by the developers. In fact, if you looked at the second half of Resident Evil 7 and take away all of the first person-oriented corridor horror influences and shifted it back to the actual roots of the series (third person perspective, eccentric overtones, absurdist horror, grindhouse exploitation, etc) it’d probably be a relatively good fit. However, with that said, I would like to point out that I am not adverse to Resident Evil’s evolution from a survival horror series to an action horror series—though there is a lot to criticize in the titles within the latter if you prefer the former. I believe the spirit of Resident Evil is a little more than “survival horror” or “action horror” but more to do with the themes, quirks, set pieces, and tone.

I like Resident Evil 4, parts of Resident Evil 6, and a good portion of Resident Evil 5 despite it being centered on unengaging characters as protagonists. But at the heart of it my favorite Resident Evil games will always be Code Veronica, Zero, the Remake/Original, and the second game. They were just more interesting, had better level designs, more dynamic boss designs, and better usage of horror and b-movie tropes put through a Japanese perspective. I also spent a lot of time on Outbreak. God that was a blast. They should do a new one of those.

Thanks, eight months ago version of me. Looks like I've talked about this subject to death here and forgot for five minutes. Funny that.

Could be worse, you could drastically change your opinion on backtracking. D:

Resident Evil 4 had the best enemies and bosses by a country mile. Even if you liked the designs of the bosses in REmake and Zero (oh look a big verson on of an animal) the isn't much strategy in fighting them. Its a war of attration, just have enough health and ammo to tank hits and shoot them a lot.

If you want to say Resident Evil 4 had uninteresting characters, you cant then retro-actively praise Leon and Ada in 2. Either they are good characters or they arent.

Resident Evil 4 having uninteresting characters is in line with the series as a whole. Resident Evil is a series that has 'iconic' characters and not a single one of them is actually a good or interesting character.

Only reason I care about Wesker is because he stole Spiderman's "Maximum Spider" super from the entire Marvel vs Capcom series once he appeared in MvC 3.

Unfortunately I have to yell "MAXIMUM WESKER" For him because apparently it's referred to as "Phantom Dance" in the files. smh

You do know I enjoy Resident Evil 4 wholeheartedly, right? Did you miss that being smug or something?

Look. I know Resident Evil has tacky, kitsch-type characters that would be laughable in anything but a B-Movie atmosphere. I’ve been playing this series since it came out in 1996, so you don’t need to tell me that it’s a niche series with stupid plots and even more imbecilic characters. It’s a schlocky B-Movie horror series ramped up to 11 seen through a Japanese lens. That’s what makes it interesting to me. I am consistent in what I like about Resident Evil.
