Real simple, state one video game you think is underrated and one that you think is overrated, feel free to give as much or as little detail as you want.

Here are mine

Underrated: Ninja Gaiden 2
I dont think this game is criminally underrated, I think most people who played it think it was a good game, but goddamn if it doesn't get left out of the conversation all the time. I mean when talking about games in the combat/hack and slash adventure genre, you have Devil May Cry, God Of War, Bayonetta and Darksiders (bleh) brought up a lot, but ninja gaiden, with its extremely tight controls, good straight forward story, strong difficulty, and excellent combo system seems to just go unnoticed. I wonder if its because its made by team ninja "and they are responsibles for teh boobie game 0/10" or that its the difficulty, but this title seriously needs a 2nd opinion.

Overrated: The Last Of Us
Might be an easy target, but the game is just good, not amazing. Its very pretty and has some well acted/voiced cut scenes (FOR A VIDEO GAME) and the story is mostly compelling. But lets not pretend if the gameplay is anything more than just functional to enjoyable and that the pacing doesn't seriously drag at multiple times in the game. Again with the acting, as good as it is, if this wasn't a video game it would probably only reach the level of a fairly well received netflix movie. I think it gets blown out of proportion because it did one or two things very well and didn't do anything horribly but a 10/10 game that does not make.

Oh cool, I'll hop on this train.

I agree, Last of Us is super overrated, and I generally hated every character involved in that story.

Though for me,

Underrated
"Airships, Conquer the Skies"
This is a side scrolling, 2D, sandbox, RTS that is currently an Indie game on Steam. It's got all the awesome things you want in a Steampunk airship based RTS where you can build your own airships from scratch, planning out the placement of coal, suspensium, repair tools, corridors, you fucking name it. It's still in early access and is being developed by one Swiss guy. But damn, its coming along real nicely, to a point that this was the first game I ever gotten into Modding (Check out the DocPeabody's mod pack if you want something more than 17 century cannons on your airship, *cough cough* Yamato Guns *cough cough*). It's a cheap, up and coming indie game that is a lot of fun to waste a few hours in.

Overrated
"Undertale"
Now hold on! Put away those knives and Ghaster Blasters and hear me out! I love Undertale for the unique and interesting story and the wonderful soundtrack. What I don't like is everyone talking like its the second coming of christ. This game has been extensively overrated and while it is certainly an amazing game, it still has some incredibly irritating flaws such as the pacifist run bullshit with the fish lady and the nerd who needs to die. It is also incredibly cringe levels of mushy cheesyness with the pacifist run and sometimes pretends to be more deep than it actually is. But the moment anyone tries to provide legitimate criticism, the autistic fanbase that has now latched onto it eats you alive.

@Skepic Airships huh? that reminds me of a aviation based RP I was GMing...

Real talk though I obviously agree with you on undertale, but as for you underrated examples its probably best to chose slightly better known examples, only so the reviews they have gotten can be compared and examined more easily, as there is a difference between underrated and relatively obscure or fairly new and still gaining traction.

For example there is a game I consider a gem called Firo & Klawd

but its one of those very few games that was released in europe but NOT in america so a huge chunk of the gaming community never had access to the damn thing. I wouldn't be fair to call it underrated because damn near no one got to rate it at all.

Also I think spiderman 2 is overrated, a functional swinging mechanic cant save boring missions and buggy combat.

Underrated:

The Darkness. Go check it out. Online blows, but it's one of the most entertaining story-centric first person shooters I've ever experienced.

Also, it provides one of the greatest video game lines of all time.

Overrated:

Going with perspective here. Modern Warfare 2. It received a ten, everyone loved it, but man, the online play was a serious step down from the original imho. This was the beginning of the end, you could see the signs of cookie cutter fuckery before the series descended into bleh.

For underrated I'm going with Lost Odyssey. It's a JRPG made by the same guys who made FF7. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJWZlqLxiLg&t. Don't have any games that come to mind for me that are overrated.

No but seriously, which games do you feel are the most overrated? I know probably 80% of those games get really low critic scores.

Damn I love that game, voice acting and the backstories were so intense (1000 year dreams)
Also did you ever notice that the map music changes around 1:38?

My next overrated pick would be Killzone and my underrated would be the dead or alive fighting games.

Underrated: The Banner Saga

It was a good game, your decisions could mean losing your strongest warrior, or most liked one if you make the wrong decision. Every action could lead to a change in the story considering you are fighting monsters far stronger and far more numerous than your own characters. Going down in battle leads to injuries which makes the characters weaker and forces you to switch them out for the next battle.

Overrated: Payday 2

A game which is only difficult when your allies are stupid and don't know how to properly do a mission or you decide to select too hard of a mission without the proper preparation. It is nice, don't get me wrong there, but damn is it simple.

Underrated: Battleborn

Man, I actually had a ton of fun with this game, but alas it had to come out I think a week before Overwatch. Mind you, Battleborn is a different game, but they both look like class-based shooters from a distance. Not to take anything away from Overwatch, as that game is also fantastic, but Battleborn was far better than it got credit for.

Overrated: Every TellTale Game Ever

Okay this isn't exactly fair, and I know that. Sure, they have great stories, but the games are so formulaic at this point. You can see where the decisions you make don't honestly matter later on, or worse, you can see the game pause for a split second and load previous decisions just to show you how much your "options mattered". They are good, but I just feel like the engine has been so overdone at this point that they really need to re-work it. But they won't because they can crank out games incredibly fast because the engine will not ever change.

Underrated: Murder Miners
Even I don't know what the hell this game is, but it's definitely one of the best games I've ever played with friends.

Underrated: Assassin Creed: Chronicles
The rest of the series is basically a carbon copy of itself, but Chronicles is unique in the sense that it acts more like a platformer and strategy game than anything else. If it didn't have the Assassin Creed title attached to it, I feel like it would actually be a fairly successful game especially with the gorgeous art style that it has.

Underrated: Always Sometimes Monsters
I forget how much this game costs, but the fact that it DOES cost money and has pixel sprites might be an automatic turnoff for most people. The game is also fairly short, but it does have high replayability value. I've beaten this game several times now and it's honestly such an interesting and twisted tale that acts as a realistic glimpse into human desperation. The characters may appear shallow and one-dimensional, but the more I played this game, the more I learned about my character, the characters around them, and a little bit about humanity in general.

Overrated: Minecraft (?)
I genuinely love Minecraft and had spent my early teenage years playing it with family friends, but it has had so many updates and renditions that it's slowly becoming unrecognizable. I loved the game when you could simply build underground houses and awesome forts with a worry of creepers and skeletons instead of having to care about witches, potions, and whatever else. I know that much of these expansions are optional, but the game feels somewhat empty if I ignore them. I wish Minecraft would revert to its more original form meaning that Microsoft would not have their grubby mitts on it anymore.

Underrated: Grim Dawn

I didn't even know this game existed until I had bought a monthly bundle from Humblebundle. Even then, didn't even play it till now, months later. Made in the old school style of dungeon crawling with the likes of Diablo, Grim Dawn can be very repetitive like them. It doesn't detract from the value of the game though as this means you are less willing to die far from your most recent Rift Gate or have to walk all the way back through the dungeon you just went through to try and kill a boss again. Which will very well happen as, if you are too low of a level or simply get bad luck with your heals, you can die in an instant. Even the mobs can kill you purely by swarming you, though there are certain classes that deal well with this.

Overrated: Stardew Valley

Like repetitive games where you have to learn the hard way how to do things properly or you'll end up broke before you know it and can't do shit for the special events? Well, Stardew Valley is for you then. Play a farmer who use to work in a city for the JoJo corporation, the big evil corporation that definitely adds value to the game. Totally not sarcasm, I swear. Anyway, you pretty much spend half your time building up the shit you have so that you can have more than enough money to afford shit. Oh yeah, apparently a chicken coop costs about 50k gold in that world to fuckin build it. Not to mention she only needs some wood for you otherwise.

Underrated: Spec Ops: The Line

This game will fuck you up. What starts as an unremarkable and basic 3rd person shooter devolves into a downward spiral of atrocities against humanity before you know it; each misstep and calamitous act quickly writing itself off as "he did it", and so the game continues. The farther you get the crazier it gets, and you begin to realize how fucked up the main character really is, until it finally comes to the end and every single thing that you did is deconstructed and thrown in your face, almost as if the game is fully aware of your existence as a player and is telling you you did all of this. It's definitely a very self-aware game that has a very linear path with a couple of moral choices here and there that have absolutely fuck-all effect on the final outcome; as if it's trying to tell you that these isolated acts of goodness don't begin to compare to everything else you've done. It's only after the damage is done that your choices have any effect on the outcome. The gameplay is as unremarkable as ever, but the storyline is one for the books.

Overrated: Battlefield 1

Let's be honest, the Battlefield franchise is starting to suffer from the same cookie-cutter fuckery that Call of Duty is (thank you @Dark Wind for that particular turn of phrase, lol). Arguably, it has been since Battlefield 4. I mean come on, it was basically the same as Battlefield 3, but with re-modeled and re-skinned vehicles and weapons, and some different maps. BF1 isn't too different, and despite the fact that it takes place in World War 1, there's a lot of pretty exotic weapons with some attachments that were pretty exotic for the time. At least there's nothing that could be called an anachronism in BF3 or 4, but for fuck's sake, reflex sights in the early 1900s? I mean, it's not truly an anachronism, but they weren't exactly fucking commonplace either. Like, shit, BF3 and 4 didn't have attachments that aren't already in mainstream production. Plus it plays very much like the two prior Battlefield games, showing a lack of innovation which I solely blame on EA. Fuck EA!

Underrated: Hotline Miami
If you've even caught a glimpse of me on Roleplayer Guild, there's no doubt that you'll come to one logical conclusion: I absolutely love the Hotline Miami games. I love it all - the fast-paced ultraviolence, the retro pixel aesthetics, the glorious soundtrack that plays as you punch, shoot, and slice your way through Russian mobsters, it's all fantastic. The sequel (Hotline Miami 2 - Wrong Number) did everything that the original did, but improved on it drastically. HM2 reduced the amount of masks but improved their abilities, it expanded the levels and gave us more unique and thought-out level design, and it was just a general step up in difficulty. Dennaton knew they'd given the game a controversial ending, so what did they do? They added a level editor so the game could live on spiritually, imagined in the eyes of the fans! Hotline Miami 2 just hit the ball out of the park in terms of what a sequel should do.

Despite this, I still have a nostalgic pull towards the original game. It's just as solid as HM2, and it definitely made a big boom in the gaming world. Hotline Miami caused an increase in top-down, adrenaline pumped shooters, even if we did get a few bad eggs like Hatred and Bloodbath Kavkaz. Perhaps it's just the fact that the game first introduced me to this awesome new world of 80s aesthetics and hardcore shooters? Who knows, but I will forever idolise this game as one of the best in the indie games industry, if not the entire gaming industry, triple A games and all.

Overrated: The Witcher 3
Now, don't get me wrong. Am I denying that this game is good? No. I am simply saying that this isn't "the best game ever created", according to some people. I know, I know, it's ironic coming from the person who worships a bunch of pixels like it's a god. The Witcher 3 is simply good. It's a good, solid RPG, and it has everything you could expect from an RPG. Now, if you can't handle anything other than utmost praise for this game, I'd recommend ignoring the rest of this post.

Despite being a good, solid RPG, lots of things that the game is praised for are inherently flawed. The questline is boring and bland, with no real originality, given the fact it's hours of "Go here to find Ciri, oh wait, your princess is in another castl- I mean, Ciri ain't here, my dude". I've seen lots of people praising this game for its' rich story and narrative, but that's hard to appreciate when it's strung together by endless fetch quests and walking from point A to B to find out it was completely useless. Sure, there's lots of side quests to complete, but again, they're incredibly lacking in variety when you strip them down to the bare essentials.

Now, another thing I've seen is people saying that The Witcher 3 is "prettier than most other games". Graphically? Hell yes, it is. CD Projekt Red outdid themselves with the graphical quality of the game, even if it did give way to elitist gamers whining that they can't imagine themselves petting uber-realistic dog fur in other games. However, everything else was average; what you'd expect from a game. Environment? Your average fantasy world formula: lots of grass, a few trees, some rocks, a few villages with the same house structure for every house, and then you might see some lakes and even some mountains if you're lucky. People? Average population growth formula: repeat the same general 4 NPC types, dress them all up in different clothes (not too similar, you've got to trick players into thinking there's variety!), and then copy/paste them into each town.

I'm not gonna go into much more detail, since I've got a Character Sheet to finish, but here's what I'll end with: The Witcher 3 is average. Nothing more, nothing less. I'm not saying it does worse than other games, and I'm not necessarily saying that any game has done better than it, but it's what you'd expect from an RPG. People who hold it as "the pinnacle of gaming" are probably the reason that "no other games have come close to it" - if a developer can get the entire gaming community to jizz everywhere simply by sending out a standard RPG with pretty graphics, then why should anyone else bother?

If anything, the credit for the game's success should go to the author of the Witcher universe, as it's his imagination and creativity that gave the game any sense of individuality. Practically all the monsters, lore and cool weapons and items are a result of his work, not CD Projekt Red, who simply digitized it and wowed everyone with "look, every blade of grass is individually animated!"[overexaggeration].

TL;DR: The Witcher 3 is widely viewed as the pinnacle of gaming, when it's really just an average - yet good - game, with everything you should expect from an RPG.

It's a highly rated indie game, but a lot of people I know didn't know it existed until I told them about it. Also, the game is criticised for the amount of praise it gets, saying that it doesn't really deserve that much and it's mediocre at best. It's kind of like how I feel towards The Witcher 3. Sure, most people may not see that criticism, but I used to read into it a lot.

Hotline miami still has it's drawbacks. There are plenty of levels that are hard for the sake of being hard, which makes the game frustrating at points rather than "fun".
