Character Creation Competition

The Character Creation Competition is a challenge that takes us back to the routes of roleplaying, where each participant who enters will submit a unique character in the hopes of winning as the crowd favourite. Each round will begin with a theme and/or scenario for our entrants to use as they design their character concept, all the while ensuring that any requirements and restrictions are fully obeyed and fulfilled.
Details to Note

Once a character sheet has been completed, the entrant’s submission must be PMed to @RPGC with a message title that matches the same title name of this thread — we don’t want your submission getting lost do we? Unlike other competitions public posting of your work is NOT allowed and doing so may forfeit that particular character submission.

When all the Character Sheets have been submitted — and as soon as the due date has passed — a new thread will be created where you can see everyone's submission for the first time, cast your vote, and provide feedback for others. Only one vote per person will be accepted, but feel free to give as much constructive feedback as you want to those who have entered; discussing attributes such as positives and negatives, as well as areas where improvements could have been made. From there a winner will be announced and they will be given the opportunity to choose a theme/scenario for the next round.

By providing an interesting challenge to everyone we can hope to hone our skills to improve our skills in character creations without fully committing to an ongoing roleplay.
Rules and Guidelines

  • This contest will give you creative freedom with what layout and information you feel is relevant. If you feel the need to include or omit details then that is completely up to you.
  • Only newly designed characters will be accepted. Characters found as previous creations will be forfeited or disqualified. Any plagiarism will be an instant disqualification and may be dealt with at a moderator level.
  • If you have any questions you can talk to @NuttsnBolts. He may, or may not, be running this competition...
  • These rules may be subject to change over time or due to member feedback.

CCC # 1
Due Date: July 31st (Approx 3 weeks)
Theme chosen by: NuttsnBolts

Theme/Scenario

This round's theme will be of someone who sails the seven seas, an adventurer who is after treasure and bounds booty, a scallywag who pillages and plunders... The theme is none other than Pirates!
Requirements

  • A pirate cannot be a pirate without a pirate name. Even if they have a real name every entry must have a title for which they are known or feared by.
Restrictions

  • No magical traits such as voodoo, witchcraft, or rune magic.
  • No superhero style abilities like what you may expect from One Piece.
  • Maritime pirates only, therefore no out of time period characters such as space pirates or steampunk.

So get creative and submit those entries!

Oh, dear, gosh. There is no defined parameters for how exactly the presentation of the character is supposed to be written.

Whelp. This should be potentially chaotic and amusing. Hah.

Geesh, restrictions, how did you know I instantly thought of space pirates!? XD

I might actually do this one.

Who am I kidding. I'll procrastinate for several days then forget all about it until the deadline.

Edit: Question: What is your policy with faceclaims? People who can draw their own art, or afford a commission are at a decent advantage.

Short of a rule that outright bans non-original faceclaims, I'd say the ones who pay for a faceclaim for the sake of this contest or spend the effort drawing a decent one probably deserve that advantage if present.

Is there a rule against using an image that isn't one you made or paid for? Is it fine so long as you credit the original artist/wherever it came from?

I hope that it works the same way as any other CS does on this site, the implicit idea that unless stated otherwise, you are probably not the person who made the image. If a source is requested that would be reasonable as well.

But that is a question only @NuttsnBolts can answer, as I'm no organizer in this.

@Crimson Raven Not to speak for the contest creator in question, but since the entire point is character creation. I kind of figured you'd be expected to be pedantically detailed and use words to describe your character's look over a mere picture...because that sort of feels a bit lazy for this kind of contest. Least my two cents/expectations on the subject. Isn't the contest suppose to be your work alone? Not someone else's? You'd figure (or I figured at least) that included the character's appearance.

Generally GMs will setup CS templates with attributes such as:
  • Name
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Bio

That's usually the necessities, but if I were to place things like trinkets, weapons, quotes, or even a prologue snippit, then I'm steering it towards my style of writing rather than your own. Does it make the process chaotic and amusing... hell yes, but isn't that what makes Character creation fun when you have random tidbits of info!

Question: What is your policy with faceclaims? People who can draw their own art, or afford a commission are at a decent advantage.

How you design the CS is your decision. Many people are happy to use faceclaims in a normal RP situation so there is no reason why you cannot do it here. Remember though, people will most likely be judging your CS on the information clarity and not just the fancy BB coding — although a general presentation will be better than a cramped block of text.

On that token, if you happen to be someone who is judging another — and voting for them — based on design style alone, then you are probably missing the objective of the competition (that is to hone your skills in creating interesting and balanced playable characters).

As for commissions... Your money, your choice. This is nothing more than a jellybean raffle. Personally I wouldn't pay for a faceclaim, but you may have a different outlook on that subject. If you do obtain a commission though, make sure you credit the artist.

I do realise that some hiccups and questions may be around for a while until we narrow down the right setup.

Hm, I don't have a pirate in my collection of OC's yet. Maybe I should give this a try :)

Edit: my character has been created.
Thanks, now I need a pirate RP to use this character in XD

Just bumping to remind everyone to PM any entries to @RPGC. Even if it isn't 100% complete it may still be worth a shot in order to get some feedback for your ideas.

Some things have come up this week for me so may be a tad late with closing off and publishing the submissions, so Wednesday afternoon Australian time is the current target.

I'm surprised to see there is only one other entry, aside from my own.

Anyway, I am planning to use my new character in a rp or story somehow. It would be a shame to create a character and then never use her.

One more vote would be appreciated as it would help to tie up the comp to a close.
