The Tip of the Spear

May 9th, The Illesian Capitol of Regoth, The Presidium, Military High Command

Major General Gareth D'Amos stood solemnly as the elevator ascended to the top floor of the Presidium. The 49-year-old officer's hair had entirely grayed by this point in his life, though much of it had been cut a few millimeters from the scalp. Crease lines adorned his somewhat olive-colored face and seemed to concentrate around his ever-squinted brown eyes. D'Amos was universally recognized within the Illesian Army as perhaps the most experienced and capable infantry commander they had, though that wasn't enormous praise considering the general state of the defensive-minded Illesians.

Nonetheless, D'Amos walked faithfully into the conference room, startled for a moment as he recognized King Avandre VII as well as the entire Marshall and Naval Triumvirates. Stepping into the center of the curved table, all seven of their faces looked at him expectantly, to which D'Amos pounded his chest with his right hand and bowed deeply, nearly causing his military cap to fall off.

King Avandre declared, "Welcome, Illesian brother and Major General D'Amos. We of High Command have a special military operation for you to carry out, of the utmost national importance."

D'Amos finally lifted his bow, "I am ready as always to serve Illesia."

The King motioned towards one of the Marshall Triumvir, Michielle Hontas, who slid a folder towards D'Amos. D'Amos picked it up, leafed through it for a few moments, raising his eyebrows as he remarked, "The King and the Triumvirate is certain they wish to send Illesian forces onto Toubrian soil, in what is one of the first offensive foreign actions we've done in a very long time?"

"The King and the Empress of Toubres are to be married in three months. Their soil may not be de jure Illesia, but it might as well be. The same goes for our soil," responded Triumvir Hontas.

Deciding to add Hontas' words, Avandre spoke, "This is to be the beginning of a new era for Illesia, Major General, and you are the tip of the spear."

Appearing to give no emotion, the Major General once more pounded his chest and bowed, "Yes, My Lord. I will exercise your Will as best I can."

Brothers Raymond and Gustaf Relmanto of the Julian Homeguard saying goodbye to their parents.

Foreign Minister Tyler Guborilli had been dispatched to the Helrox empire, with a guard of 12 Julian policemen as his security detail the old man had been dispatched through Melgaria and through Cadia to Helrox to avoid any unnecessary incidents should they occur. Meanwhile in the war room Viscount Zach Nato had finally got off his ass, his shoulder now sore and tight from the injury which was dubbed "The wake up call" Zach Nato had finally sent out the force the people had been asking for. Ironically though as he dealt with the refugees he may aswell of sent them back to Vigentino considered where they were relocated and what became of that location in such a sort peroid of time.

Meanwhile near Zilorno, clean up began of almost two thousand Vigentino soldiers who met a untimely demise. Julian Guardsmen who had rarely ever seen combat pat themselves on the back at such an accomplishment for a defensive force. The Thambers are set up after the battle and it's anyone's idea of what Commander... Nicholas Fabreezo would do, he wasn't a grizzled vet like Killigan not like the old guard at all. Things settled down for the day as the dead were looted (for military purposes) and disposed of. Unbeknownst to the unit, in the west a push was coming for the capital.

"Why do we have to go to Helrox" Complained senior constable Luis Martinez of the Julian constables. The minister was silent as they continued in his carriage under guard to Cadia through Melgaria. Hoping to turn the corner when they made it to Cadia and up to Helrox. "This war is a cruel, terrible war. I want this to end as much as you do, but we have to take the orders we're given. Lest we become Vigentinions or something worse."

(1905--)

Turn 5
May, 1905

May 9th
On May 9th, Forino Estadi Automobili unveiled the Forino Saetta. Johann Cogatti, the newest engineer employed out of Tyrian Helroxi (won in the Tyro-Helroxi War--thus making Johann a Tyrian born Helroxi citizen working in Vigentino), was principally responsible for the design. The Saetta was the first of it's kind--unlike the Fifth Continent coupes: sleek, light and fast, the Saetta was desired for comfort and modest luxury. Capable of seating four, it was shown off in Cogoli on May 9th. In anticipation for the move, $250,000 had been spent on opening a new factory in Cogoli across the street from the F.E.A. Plant manufacturing the Forino 4HP.

The Forino Saetta, May 1905

By the end of the month of May, in Cogoli and the surrounding towns, 346 Saetta's would be sold--netting F.E.A. profits in the range of just under $500,000. F.E.A. was grateful it was not called to manufacture weapons, for it may have been unable to finish the design components for it's first automobile. Powered by the Forino 4HP, the Saetta was capable of achieving 13 MPH on Vigentan roads and 15 MPH in Cogoli paved roads.

May 10th
Similarly, on May 10th the automobile company Segaso in the Republic of Ustrela unveils it's plan to enter the modern market of it's Northern Neighbor, the Republic of Paraka. By the end of May, a 175 Segaso Modello I's had been purchased by Parakan citizens--upper middle class citizens. Additionally, the Design Team of Segaso began development of the world's first race auto, specifically designed to win designed races on a track.

High Kingdom of Itherae

The ambition for Néo Méros

The colonial period of Itherae had begun roughly in May - June, 1905, when Philios Inaros, third-generation owner of the Inaros Trading Company, had used his influence in the Supra Dobranie and called in a personal favor with Queen Athena to grant him a charter to establish a colony in northern Serrenthia. Philios would call his ambition to colonize a portion of northern Serrenthia a “boon to the start Itheraen trade prominence in Eurania” as the colonial area that he sought to bring into Itheraen hands, while not directly on the entrance to Southern Eurania it was on the way from any ships coming from more southern lands. It was with this geographical location that Philios would believe that a prime Itheraen trading hub would be established, it was his dream to see this as an increase in sales profits and finally expand his company in a larger, grandeur fashion.

While the Itheraen economy was largely uncompetitive on the world market, Philios also believed that, should this colony be successful, it would increase Itheraen power in the world market, as well as make his nation seem more of a greater power than even their Tyrian neighbor. While many later criticize his claims, due to the instability of the region, they would eventually agree that his argument had some basis with Itherae being able to rise in power comparative to its neighbors. However, there was still the hope that an empire such as Tara or Toubres would simply use their overwhelming naval superiority to seize the colony or deter colonial ships from even landing as they made the sail from southern Itherae.

Furthermore, Itherae, at the time, had barely any navy to speak of at the time, and what few ships they did have, were unarmed merchant ships, which further increased the worry that the colony would not be able to be properly defended. However, Itheraen official Leoprepes Alcon, a foreign minister one of the few that fully supported Philios in his ambition to bring Serrenthia into Itheraen hands, would go to barter with the Etelian government in order to purchase three destroyers from them with a budget of $5 Million in Itheraen Jewels from the royal treasury around the same time his ambition would begin.

With that, the colonial interest of Philios would be somewhat secured over the course of his dream. Then, there was the issue of Kahmar Mustafa, who had recently risen up and taken Tourbres Serrenthia by storm in early february of 1905. That was where Philios would have the idea of using his own personal funds to hire retired Itheraen volunteers, many of which had the Type 91 rifles that they had used in their service, in order to form a garrison of for the colony once it had landed, though he was only able to acrew 51 able bodied men to take up the task, a number that would never be able to fight against Mustafa’s numbers. He would have to leave it up to chance whether the Itheraen army would send a proper garrison or not.

Philios would go on to recruit over 1,000 individuals to settle the colony with him, promising each man a total fifty acres of land should they go on the perilous journey. With government funds and encouragement at his back and all of Serrenthia before him, Philios “Colonialist” Inaros would go on to be known for his ambitions and pursuit of the Serrenthian dream.

The following is a exert taken from “The Nations of Eurania; their Leadership, Culture and Beliefs, 5th Edition” by Manfred Petzold, the esteemed explorer, traveller and writer.

Chapter Seven – The Empire of Toubres

A Brief Overview

The region that has come to be known as the Empire of Toubres was a seething mass of warring nations as recently as three centuries ago, unified only by their common linguistic traditions. One of the nations, the first to bear the name of Toubres, was led by a charismatic noble by the name Ivo Bastos and centred around the coastal city of Amzores.

Through a series of diplomatic masterstrokes and a string of alliances, Ivo Bastos was able to unite the majority of the nations together under his banner, and those that resisted were quickly swept away, allowing Bastos to bring the land together as the Empire of Toubres.
The only ruminants of these warring nations is the rich cultural history and identity that each of the cities and major towns of Toubres possess. These can be found detailed on the map included below this introduction.

Following the unification of the Empire of Toubres, and Ivo Bastos’s announcement as the Emperor, Toubres quickly formed an identity for itself. Due to it’s long coastline, the nation naturally leant towards the development of a powerful navy, although they soon found themselves overshadowed by the Coastal Empire of Tara, their neighbour over the water. Toubres still managed to forge its identity as a naval power, and this reputation continues up to the current ruler, Empress Maia Bastos. Inspecting the map of Toubres, it is clear how central the water is to the culture of the Empire, as majority of the key towns and cities line the coast.

The Empress is a charismatic, young ruler and although she is largely untested, she is a breath of fresh air after the long reign of her well-liked, but slow to act father, Emperor Luciano Bastos. In the coming years, how the Empress handles the issues and events that will occur in and around Toubres will be fascinating to observe. I will be sure to visit Toubres again.

Read on for a deeper insight into the cultural identity of Toubres, a detailed chronology of the Imperial Ancestry, a history of Toubres from it’s unification to modern day, and an account of my travels across the nation in the year 1904.

A Map of Paraka

The history of Paraka starts way before the colonization of the continent by Euranians, it starts with the Atwantar Empire which had unified many of the fledgling kingdoms on the region, however, as soon as it reached its prime disease ravaged the empire and what remained was a shadow of its former self, which would have been conquered by the Euranian colonial powers of the time if not for the staunch resistance of its population and pretty much lots of luck, from invasion fleets sunk by a storm to a famine because of colonists not adapting quickly enough to the conditions of the continent.

Once it became clear that the Atwantar empire wasn't leaving, the Euranians decide to negotiate be it for treaty ports, labor, etc, which the Atwantar empire had to accept for it lacked much of the necessary strength to really expulse them from the continent, as such, the Atwantar empire tried to thrive in harsh conditions and it recovered to a certain extent, however, with time Euranian values travelled to Paraka and they were welcomed by the mixed population of the coastal cities, which soon enough prospered and started the freedom movements against the authoritarian council that had taken hold of the empire politics, it is enough to say that they won albeit at the cost of becoming almost a puppet of the Euranians who had supported said movement for more financial gains.

It was only until 1792 after a war in Eurania that kept most of the nations there busy that the protectorate of Paraka became the Republic of Paraka and thus declared itself independent, however, it was only after 1812 that the Euranians finally recognized Parakan independence and thus the modern history of Paraka started.

PD: Cities in yellow are the most important cities within Paraka.

Tarian Dock workers, May 1905 as they start on the Tyson Class

In the Steelcastle Shipyards after a brief meeting with navy officials the factories supervisors and managers hold a floor meeting with the almost five thousand workers on the floor. Work had been slow in the recent months due to a lack of demand for naval ships for the navy, however things changed today when Admiral Tanik Reganzi appeared with orders to draw upon the skills and strength of the workers of Steel Castle Shipyards Dock #1 to begin the construction of a Tyson battleship. The workers cheered as a resurgence of work would help break the mental menial work of creating rods, hot works and the other general duties a factory worker had been performing for the few months of inaction they did incur.

Recruiting offices opended in the captial and other cities such as Eugai, Yaron-North, Yaron-South, Dundas, Sheperdville & Topez. A new campaign calling for peacekeeping forces and a strong military echoed the sentiment of naval and army recruiters, with a call for enlisted men some men showed up in Rio Carzano today to inquire about the military. One Taran, aged 17 named Kali spoke to a reporter. "I'm from Rio Carzano and I want to kill Toubrian rebels!" when asked why Kali responded with "They'll come for the Tarantine and then us, someone has to stop them, someone has to save those Toubrians." In the Tarantine Serranthia in the colonial (provincial) captial of Kazorski a recruiting office opended up aswell as satielle sites in villages in the Serranthia. The offices are opended nine to five, the government hopes for a increased volunteer military to help boost colonial holdings and international operations abroad, while unknown as of yet some Tarans hope that the adventure will take them to other parts of the world were they can help people.

Holy Empire of Vigentino

10th of May, 1905

Bacco Schiavoni nodded curtly as the two soldiers of the Imperial Guard quickly saluted him. The two guards were young, but they stood to attention well, and their grips on their rifles were of seasoned fighters, not of nervous recruits. As they lowered their hands, the Minister of Foreign Affairs frowned slightly.

“Well met. But it’s not necessary to salute a Minister.”

The two guards glanced at each other for a moment, before the older of the two soldiers, although only it could only have been by a year or two, replied, his voice thick with the distinctive accent of northern Vigentino.

“With respect, sir, we weren’t saluting you as a minister. Rather we were saluting you as an officer of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade, sir. ‘Pope’s Guard’.”

Bacco allowed himself a smile, he hadn’t been a cavalry office for several years, both old age and a nasty gunshot wound sustained in the last border troubles forcing him to hang up his sabre. But he was still fiercely proud of his years spent in the ‘Pope’s Guard’, and his exploits while a cavalryman were well-known. He nodded slightly to both men in thanks.

“An honour to serve. Is Capitano Crivelli in?”

The same guard, obviously taking the role of the spokesman of the two, nodded, moving to open the door behind them as he spoke.

“He is, sir. I believe he’s expecting you.”

The soldier pulled the door open and gestured for the Minister to step through. Bacco nodded in thanks and stepped through, hearing the door being carefully closed behind him.

Capitano Benino Crivelli was sat at his desk, pouring over a pile of papers, but at the sound of the door he glanced up, and his face broke into a wide smile.

“Bacco Schiavoni, as I live and breathe!”

Bacco smiled at his friends reaction, stepping further into the room and holding out his hand as he laughed, the noise deep and hearty.

“It’s good to see you too, Benino. How is our Cadian guest?”

The smile faded from Benino’s face slightly at the Minister’s question, and he shrugged as he rose from his desk and shook Bacco’s extended hand.

“Difficult, unfortunately. We’ve given him every luxury, but all he does is demand that his message be returned to him, and that he be allowed to continue on to Julia to deliver it.”

Bacco frowned, shaking his head slightly as he released Benino’s hand.

“I feared as much. Do we know his name?”

Benino visibly hesitated for a moment, struggling to find the right words, before he finally spoke.

“We do, sir. Graham.”

Raising an eyebrow, Bacco watched Benino’s face.

“Graham what?”

The Capitano shrugged helplessly.

“That’s all he’ll say.”

Bacco was silent for a moment before suddenly speaking.

“We can’t allow a trade agreement that directly harms Vigentino to pass by us. Escort Mr Graham to the border with Melgaria, give him enough food and water to reach Cadia, and a fresh horse. Politely request that he not return until the Julian issue has been resolved.”

Graham???

May 13th, 1905

Today was the return of Graham, Camereon Graham the foriegn affairs minister of Cadia. He took a knee when he saw King Roy Carl, the man looked roughed and a bit fucked up. Perhaps Vigentino fuckery with his minister, he spoke hoarsly to the King. "Sah... The Vigentinos captured me for going to Julia and they held me.. Held me for a while." King Roy Carl was red like a cherry at the moment, not only was the trade agreement now corpsed but so was his foriegn minister. He screamed for a messenger "Messenger!!!!!" a young man about age 20 appeared and the King spoke to him briefly before he left, where to? Cogoli the captial of Vigentino, things were about to escalate.

Graham was tended too by the medics on site at the palace, he was tired and a bit hungry since he was not fed high quality wine or food but bread and water. Meanwhile in Markus where that library was being built the first plank was placed down today, the foundation would be worked on later aswell a sign of what's to come. King Roy Carl was seriously pissed with Vigentino, if they didn't aheed to the demands now being sent to them they could face a new war... From a stronger enemy.

An Engineer With A Vision

It was a humid May night as Charles Amlore and the engineering team that currently composed Yorvagr Motor Company remained hard at work after hours in the shop. One Segaso Modello 1 sat untouched in the corner of the workshop that composed Northman Machining, with multiple drawing boards next to it that held replications of its design and Segaso Systéme 3.2HP engine, all labeled carefully as well as the way in which the order in which every part was added. Not far away was the undisturbed Karqasia Model V with its K.A. 6HP engine and associated diagrams as well as a still-assembled Forino 4HP motor.

About twenty yards away, nestled against the wall of the shop and surrounded by numerous machines to create parts as well as a number of blank drawing boards and the men of Yorvagr, were the mostly disassembled models of each automobile and the Forino engine. Amlore in particular stood in front of each of the three competing engines' parts, looking at each in detail as he took a slow drag on his cigar. After exhaling a plume of smoke that only added to that which already hung in the air from his fellow engineers, the man pointed at each one, "What do you each of you see in common with these engines?"

For a few moments, everyone looked at each of them before Harold Yngold, the burly near-Dwarf muttered, "They're too bloody hard to take apart."

Amlore chuckled, nodding at the same time before adding, "That is true. But there is more."

"They all use two cylinders," noted Samuelle.

To that, the Chief Engineer nodded again, taking another puff of the cigar, "Also correct. Put simply, these engines are a bitch to maintain and they're also rather inefficient in a way." Slowly circling the three engines he spoke, motioning to each one occasionally, "The K.A. is essentially just a replica of the Forino, and the Segaso isn't much different either. They're all made of an astonishing number of parts, and it would take even an intelligent person quite a while to disassemble them if something went wrong and say, a valve needed to be replaced. I've been reading up on the theory behind how these engines work as well, and I've come to the conclusion that we need to expand to four cylinders."

Harold stroked his beard for a moment, taking a draught of beer afterwards before asking, "What makes you say that, boss?"

Smiling, Amlore raised a hand to reveal four fingers, "There are fundamentally four processes that a cylinder undergoes when it operates. Fuel and air come in, they get compressed and then ignited by the spark plugs, then this hot gas pushes against the valve of the cylinder and is eventually expelled to be replaced with fresh air and fuel. So what might happen with two cylinders?"

The youngest engineer, Robére, slowly said as if unsure, "They get mixed together."
Clapping his hands together before forcefully pointing at Robére, Amlore continued, "That's absolutely the right answer. Mixed together to the point where, if you think about it, the old, spent fuel and air gets mixed with the new air-fuel mixture. That means the engine isn't as powerful as it could be. Now, if we design an engine that isolates intake of the new fuel-air mixture from the old, compression, ignition and power stroke, followed by exhaust of the spent fuel-air mixture, the result should be a much more efficient, powerful engine. And if we take it one step further," once more, the man brought those four fingers out, "we can have a cylinder doing each process at one time. So there will always be a cylinder performing the power stroke, followed by exhaust, and so on!"

Brushing his grayed hair back over his head, Amlore continued to pace, rubbing his chin thoroughly, "We've also got to reduce the complexity of the engine. We need to keep it simple. Keep everything simple. The more simple it is, the easier it is to build, maintain, and the less it'll cost. Every part we don't need needs to be stripped or fused into another. We'll make the cylinders be fused together into a single cast iron engine block, and then have the head be detachable so engineers and mechanics can more easily fix problems inside and so the car can be assembled faster... We'll strip all the unnecessary crap off the car, then try to use simpler materials instead of extravagant leather for instance. The cheaper it is to build in terms of material costs, the better, but," Amlore waved outwards towards the team, encompassing all of them, "labor needs to be taken into account too. The Segaso is mass manufactured, so we'll do the same, but we're going to do it even better!"

Taking a deep breath before stopping in front of the crew, Amlore finished his half speech half rant with, "And the objective is simple: not only meet the expectations of the contest, but attempt to go beyond them. I want us to revolutionize the automobile, even more than our competitors have revolutionized it. I want to make the automobile so affordable that even beggars will drive them. And everyone will want one. And we'll all be rich beyond our wildest imaginations!"

There was a chorus of "Here here" as the men raised their glasses and cigars, quickly setting about work attempting to revolutionize the fledging industry. From a simple machining workshop in the quiet city of Ynghold, in the quiet nation of Illesia, six men had a fair chance to succeed enormously.

Shaping an Army

A group of young Illesian recruits gathered together in the morning of May 17th for their daily meeting, some of them sipping mugs of ale and talking amongst themselves when the group was quieted with an aggressive shout, "At-ten-tion! Get in formation!"

Haphazardly and frantically, the group tried to align themselves and take up the position of attention as the sergeant approached, clutching a piece of paper in his right hand that he unraveled, yelling, "Alright, recr- Jamey, shut your goddamn mouth, now! And put down that fucking mug of ale! Now, listen up: The Illesian military is beginning to undergo a long series of changes with the goal of adhering to the following standards, handed down by the Marshall Triumvirate themselves. When we were focused entirely on defense, we became complacent. From now, we are going to push ourselves, all of us, together, to be the absolute best we can possibly be. And that starts today, here, with all of you. All of your fellow soldiers will also immediately be put into harsh physical training as well, so don't worry. Now, the standards that we are going to push your sorry asses to meet are as follows," the sergeant began reading directly from the parchment,

"1. Ability to lift at least 120 pounds of weight above the Soldier's head.
2. Ability to carry at least 80 pounds of total gear and equipment on the Soldier's body and march with it for at least six hours while covering at least twenty miles with few breaks for rest.
3. Ability to run three miles unencumbered within thirty minutes.
4. Ability to sprint 300 yards within 70 seconds.
5. Ability to perform ten pull-ups without resting.
6. Ability to perform fifty crunches without resting.
7. Ability to pass a marksmanship course that presents a Soldier with man-sized targets at 200, 300, and 400 yards. Every Soldier gets 50 rounds to use, and there are 20 targets at 200 yards, 20 targets at 300 yards, and 10 targets at 400 yards. To pass, the Soldier must hit at least thirty-five targets. To receive the distinction of 'Marksman' with accompanying ribbon and 10% more pay per month, the Soldier must hit at least forty-two targets. To receive the distinction of 'Eagle' with accompanying ribbon and 30% more pay per month, the Soldier must hit forty-eight targets.
8. Ability to disassemble and reassemble the Soldier's rifle within four minutes, blindfolded.
9. Ability to quickly re-establish chain of command when the Soldier's commanding officer is incapacitated.
10. Ability to stand at attention, in formation, without moving or talking, for at minimum three hours.
11. Ability to understand and execute the orders of the Soldier's commanding officer nearly flawlessly.
12. Ability to identify all ranks within the Illesian Army and respond accordingly.
13. Ability to perform basic live-saving first aid on a fellow Soldier.
14. Ability to properly wear the dress uniform of the Illesian Army.
15. It is unacceptable for a Soldier to be Drunk, Disorderly, Insubordinate, to Assault a Fellow Soldier or Officer, or to perform any other activity deemed unsavory by their commanding officers or the Military as a whole while on duty and ideally while off duty as well."

For a few minutes, the sergeant remained quiet, letting his words sink into the group as some of their faces paled. Many of them had initially signed up believing that a job with the Illesian military was an easy one, considering they had barely fought anyone for longer than most could remember. That belief died that day. In the ensuing months, a number of Illesians would fail to push themselves hard enough to make acceptable progress towards the standards and be replaced with fresh bodies, but Illesia would eventually persevere as every Illesian soldier was ordered to begin a significant amount of physical and mental conditioning.

Arming an Army

Alexander Felize stood before the Committee on National Finances which had convened with the Marshall Triumvirate and King Avandre VII present on May 23rd. Felize was quite the elder businessman, having performed the job of CEO of Tournesol Armureries for decades. Tournesol was literally the oldest arms manufacturer in the world, and it was in dire straits. Debt was up enormously and only piling on more and more as the interest weighed in while no one seemed to be buying their outdated rifles anymore. And so, Felize had decided to come before the government in person, essentially begging for work in order to save the company, its employees, and the lineage that Tournesol represented.

King Avandre himself had appeared, a fact which thoroughly surprised the old CEO as the King slid a paper towards Felize to pick up and read, "The Marshall Triumvirate, the Committee on National Finances, and myself, have inspected your request, Mister Felize, and we have come to a simple conclusion..." Felize's heart weighed heavily in his chest during that long pause Avandre gave, "and that is, that your rifles are obsolete. It's been, what, a decade since you designed a new rifle?" For a moment, Felize began to correct him before Avandre forcefully continued, "Exactly how long doesn't matter. The point is, Illesia needs a new rifle. We also want to try out some of these new machine guns that have been getting passed around, so that contract is fairly straightforward. If Tournesol Armureries can license the most up to date, effective and best rifle and machine guns designs from another private company, even a foreign one, within three months, for at least a period of one year of production, Illesia will buy every single rifle, machine gun, and round of ammunition your company can produce. Of course, we expect all of these items to be in working order."

Eyes going wide, Felize slowly stepped towards the paper and took hold of it, signing his name where it was supposed to go, binding the government to its promise. As the man signed though, Avandre leaned forward and placed a single hand upon the paper, "Mister Felize, do not give the government of Illesia subpar weapons. It may not end well for you. We hope for your success. Oh, and, I want you to think carefully about this and ask your engineers, then inform us within a month whether or not your company can design rifle, machine gun, and field gun designs on par or better than current designs. Within a reasonable period of time, of course. If you can pull it off, Illesia will likely give Tournesol a contract for the production of those weapons. And don't lie to me, Mister Felize. I will personally take affront to it if you do." Avandre smiled and leaned back in his seat, releasing the paper.

Gulping profusely, Alexander Felize bowed multiple times to the assembled men, "Yes, your Majesty. I will get right on all of your requests. Tournesol will do all that they can to not fail you."

Forgotten Deadlines

Fitzgerald was sitting quietly in the Committee on Infrastructure's conference room on May 25th when he received a paper from his secretary emblazoned with the King's own seal. Opening it, he quietly summed it up for the assembled Committee, "The King wishes to receive reports on our progress every two months, and informs us that we have six months to disburse all $5,000,000."

A wriggly old turtle of a man, Saribold, shrugged next to Fitzgerald, "Alright. I was a bit surprised that the rest of the government had forgotten their deadline when they formed our Committee. Usually they're more clear.

The World Undone

(1905--)

Turn 5
May, 1905

May 9th
The Republic of Paraka's attempts to pass the Transcontinental Railway Act seemed doomed from the start. Initially designed to connect the vast country by an intricate network of rails, the bill became a pork bill filled to the brim with nonsensical and non-related law changes and adjustments that did very little to benefit the production of any railway in Paraka. Instead, a 3% cut to Corporate Taxes was instituted and the incentive for railways companies was largely mitigated by the fact that the regulations instituted were so difficult, many private entrepreneurs were uncertain whether such a task could be completed with things as stringent as a "40 hour work week" and "all employees must utilize basic safety protocols."

The Fifth Continent's automakers influence was not understated nor was it too strong, but corruption in the Parakan administration was not to be underestimated. Legislative attempts to pass another bill without so much nonsense would go down in flames later in the month. Given the size of Paraka, it was inevitable that bids would be placed for the contract.

Joseph Lesting finishes his move to Cogoli, Vigentino. A famed Cadian writer of some repute, his last two novels went down in flames and Lesting's wife--also his third cousin--Henrietta, wrote in her diary: "The Vigentan air is good for all, but especially Joseph, who knows he still has one last great novel in him." Whether she would prove to be prophetic or not remained unseen.

Corporate Expansion

Mikhail sat in his desk as he looked over the paperwork of his business. The head of a small weapons development and production company which normally would be chaotic and always busy due to competition. Being state owned however and without competition the company was slowly making due. His secretary Terry Walsh knocked on the door, Mikhail waved him in. “What is man, I am busy here looking over the accounts.” The Secretary said nothing just handed a slip of paper and walked back out. Mikhail looked confused and hastily opened the letter

Mikhail slowly set down the paper and was shaken. This was something big the company would finally expand and be made useful. The future looked bright.

(Across town, the same order was set out for Nikolai Verkalov of Kamerin Naganta to expand in the same two cities)

A Fancy Paper

The Kaiser sat in a huff with the cabinet in session now with one member absent, the Minister of Commerce and with the deputy still away, the entire ministry is in disaree. “The King of Tyria thinks he can fight us once more. Well I’ll show him, I shan’t even respond and should he bring war, it’s a war he’ll lose. Just like before. Don’t you all agree!” The Kaisers eyes furrowed as he looked around the room, “Of course, we’re in full support your majesty. The Tyrians are clearly in the wrong and if they wish to lose two wars in less than a decade let them.” The Minister of Finance said. “Good, Casper, go call the High Command again. We must prepare in case the tyrians are stupid enough to war.” The Kaiser stood up and walked out in a huff.

In the Coastal Empire of Tara, the Peacekeeper is laid down. A Tyson-class battleship, she will be the third in her class and the largest, most sophisticated warship in the known world at over 12,400 tons. She is expected to finish in roughly two and a half years time. The Steel Castle Shipyards, one of the premier shipyards in Tara, had also completed one of the two former Tyson-class battleships currently in the Tarantese Fleet. With control of the Known Seas, and the only nation with any apparent intent to develop it's shipbuilding capabilities, Tara continues a long held tradition of naval supremacy.

With Tournesol Armureries in dire financial straits, the CEO of the company, Alexander Felize, sends a request to the Illesian government for work. After short discussion by the Marshall Triumvirate and the Committee on National Finances, with the approval of the King, the Illesian government issues a contract to

To Tournesol Armureries,
Tournesol Armureries is to license the best rifle design and machine gun design it can from another private company for at least one year of production. If able to successful license the designs within three months, the Illesian government will purchase as many rifles, machine guns, and rifle and machine gun ammunition as Tournesol Armureries can produce every month, so long as all of the items are in working order, for a period of two years.

If Tournesol Armureries believes that it can design equivalent or better rifle and machine gun designs as currently available rifles and machine guns, with at most a year and a half of development time, it is to report this belief to the government, after which considerations will be made for the establishment of bids to develop such designs and future contracts. The government also wishes to inquire as to Tournesol Armureries' ability to design and manufacture field artillery equivalent to modern examples if they were given a contract for production of field artillery and associated ammunition.

Without any other government--domestic or international--contracts, Tournesol Armureries accepts the job.

The Tyrian Empire

"Unbowed and Unbroken"
May, 1905

The Emperor's Address

"To my people. It was my fervent wish to consecrate these past years of my reign to works of peace and the protection of my people from the heavy sacrifices and burdens of war. Providence, in its wisdom, has otherwise decreed for the intrigues of a malicious and spiteful foe compel me, in the defense of the honor of my Monarchy and this nation, for the protection of its dignity and welfare, and for the security of its possessions, to grasp the sword and once more turn to war.

The Helroxi Empire, whom have for years trodden the path of open hostility to Tyria have made their ambitions evident with less and less disguise. The flame of its hatred for this nation and international peace has blazed always higher and has now been made manifest with the stationing of it's armed forces upon the consecrated borders of several nations including our hallowed own. Unjustified and unmerited, such an act speaks only of a dark heart and violent intent towards the people whom I hold in dear and paternal affection.

A halt must be called to these intolerable proceedings and an end must be put to the incessant provocations of Helrox which threatens to undo that noble peace currently enjoyed by our nations. In vain did my Government make a last attempt to accomplish this noble goal by peaceful means and to induce Helrox, by means of a serious ultimatum, to desist. Helrox in it's belligerence has rejected the just and moderate demands of my Government and refused to conform to those obligations which form the natural and necessary foundation of peace between states. We are left therefore, with no other option but to proceed by force of arms to secure tranquility and lasting peace for this nation.

In this solemn hour I am fully conscious of the significance of my words and stand assured in my resolve and responsibility. I have examined and weighed everything, and with a serene conscience I set out on the path to which my duty now points. I trust in my people to rally in unity and loyalty to my throne and this nation. I trust in Tyria's brave and devoted forces, and I trust in the righteousness of our cause to give victory to our arms."

- Transcript of the Emperor Adalar von Wolfram's speech before an assembled crowd of international journalists, diplomats and the public, hours following the deadline set by the Tyrian Ultimatum to the Helroxi Empire and the subsequent mobilization of the Imperial Tyrian Army.

The Tri-Academy

Running the rounds through the Imperial Diet since the dawn of May had been the 'Tri-Academy Proposal' proposed by the Itheraen Kingdom. After several weeks of deliberation the proposal for a multinational military academy had been accepted by the Imperial Diet and the Emperor but not without amendments proposed by the Tyrian government which had in turn been accepted by both the Itheraen and Cydernian delegations.

Who was placing these railroad tracks was almost as cause as much confusion as to how much they were going to get paid to place them. The government of the Helrox, already severely in debt--had to print the entirety of the $8,000,000,000 for distribution. Price of a loaf of bread in Flegleen was $0.03. By the end of May it would be nearly $2.00 (or 2.5% of a Helroxi's yearly income).(

May 24th
The government of the Empire of Toubrés put out a request for a design of a bridge that could cross the waters between Toubres and Tara at it's narrowest point, allow for the reliable bearing of an active railway, without warping of breaking, and will not hinder the travel of shipping through the strait. The design request is open to any architects or engineers within Toubres and should include an estimated cost and build time. The deadline for submissions is placed in twelve months time. A conference is planned for the date of the submission deadlines, where all those who submit will be invited to present their designs to their peers, and allow for open discussion and input. From this conference, the top five designs will be selected, both by the judgement of their peers, and by the judgement of Armando Ros, the Minister of Transportation and a keen and accomplished engineer in his own right. The selected designs will then be submitted to the Empress, for her approval or dismissal.

In order to do so, the following standards must be met within four months of enlistment or within four months of the passing of these standards, depending on if the Soldier joined after the passing of these Standards or before:

These Standards are absolute and apply to all Enlisted men in the Illesian Army, regardless of age. Officers are subject to similar though fairly relaxed physical standards due to their typically much greater age, but are held to much higher mental standards. The Marshall Triumvirate orders all Soldiers to meet these standards within four months, or face immediate discharge. It is recommended that a daily course of physical training be adopted effective immediately and indefinitely by all men of the Illesian Army, unless they are engaged in combat operations that see them enduring regular marches and battle.

In the Tyrian Empire, the Colonial Department, previously a subdivision of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs is to be elevated by Imperial Decree to a central authority and ministry in it's own right. The new authority, dubbed the Imperial Colonial Office will be relocated to it's own ministry building within the capital of Landorf and will be headed by the Colonial Minister Yannik von Schonfeld. This new government agency is to be tasked with the administration of future Tyrian overseas territories.

The Imperial Colonial Office will be granted a budget of $5,000,000 Krones. With part of this budget they are to fund the Anderle Expedition whom have been tasked with exploring and mapping out any regions currently unclaimed by any nation on the east Serranthian coastline. So called the Anderle Expedition because of Eckart Anderle, an official from the Colonial Office who is to be attached to the expedition and whose primary task is to oversee the establishment of positive relations with any natives they might come across. To guide and lead the expedition the Office will put out an offer to hire the services of a Euranian or Serranthian explorer willing to accept provided they are of not-inconsiderable expertise and prestige in the exploratory line of work.

Julo-Vigentan War

Julo-Vigentan War, June, 1905

Divided into two Operational Fronts, the Julo-Vigentan War was split into the Western Front and Eastern Front. On the Eastern Front, the Julo-Vigentan Armies had met in full force. Julian units were well dug in, with field artillery sighted in appropriately on Vigentan positions. A single probing offensive carried out began the siege like Battle of Zilorno where soldiers in individual fox holes weather intermittent artillery barrages. The weather was hot and musty even for Euranian summers, but for the first time in as many months the Julians were in good spirits. The Zilorno battle drew the entirety of both armies across the Julo-Vigentan border and by the end of May the battle lines had been effectively drawn.

The Western Front was a mad dash to Julia, with no soldiers defending the Western reaches. Surprisingly, the Vigentan advance was slowed by a massive influx of refugees attempting to flee Southwest. Without any defenses, it was expected that the Vigentans would be at the Western Wall of the City-State of Julia by the end of the first week of June.

With the borders pressing in on the western front Zach Nato looked out the window of his estate to the city that once was Julia. The city had become fortified with the garrison standing tall as it had cleared out the refugees only to be ironically sent in the direction of the enemy. However, with the refugees now flooding the Vigentino army and had bogged them down from apparent reports from the west. On the eastern front, things were about to heat up like a volcanic Cadian King. The evacuation began for the women and children to head east towards Melgaria to avoid the savagery of the Vigentino Horde.

His son, Zach Nato the second also was among those fleeing the city for he should not have to see the brutality of war at home. Perhaps he'd make it to Melgaria but fate would serve the boy as long as it was in the Nato's favor. Returning to his throne room (which was relatively empty now) Nato reflected on what's led up to this, Etelo the agitator, poor government and choices, not de-escalating. It didn't really matter now, the walls from the west were closing in and alot of people could die.

Work was still left to be done, Nato got up and began to speak to the minister that still were around or alive. Maybe Foreign Minister makes it to the Helrox Empire alive, it will take a while but he may come back with success. Smoke billows in the west, the pillaging had begun on the western Julians, no one ever would of expected the Vigentians to attack from the west but now things had to be corrected. Quickly before the country fell to a religious fanatic who could possibly destabilize all of the region.

Military Meeting

The Kaiser and his military officials had been in the meeting room all night with constant arguing about the best course of action should be done. Finally, an ideal plan was set out and reports were sent out the the required units. Meanwhile the navy was informed of their orders. The Kaiser however had to prepare himself and his staff for the war. His father had won the war just 5 years earlier, but times were different then the economy was on track and people adored his father, the same could not be said for him. However he believed that with a swift victory against the Tyrians, he would win the people’s support and anything they acquired would help fix the economy, but the Kaiser went to bed that night with dark and vivid dreams uncertain of the future.

A middle-aged Illesian sat reading the paper as hundreds of people strolled past him on foot and in horse-drawn carriages in the city of Regoth. Sprawled across it were the words, "Second War In The West!" His eyebrows furrowed as he looked closer at the article, mentally remarking how distance the Vigento-Julian war had seemed. And yet, another war had erupted in the West. Slowly, it appeared as if conflict was crawling its way East, and that was not something the man wanted. So long as Illesia stayed out of the distant conflict between giants, the man was at least somewhat at ease.

High Kingdom of Itherae

The Queen and her cars

With the unveiling of the Saetta in May 9th, Queen Athena Tyroli, an already avid viewer of the automobile development, would later go on to dispatch an offer to the company of Forino Estadi Automobil, to buy several automobiles for herself and the royal family almost immediately after its unvieling. However, the Supra Dobranie would attempt to block the queen from exercising her power of using state money in such a ludicrous and selfish manner that would not benefit the people of Itherae as a whole. This would begin a fifteen day debate between the Queen and elements within the Supra Dobranie, due to seats within the Supra Dobranie being held by a majority of conservative politicians. Yet, towards the end of the debates, Queen Athena would compromise with the Supra Dobranie to buy a total of three hundred cars.

The cars would then be given those who would enter a free raffle in Thermydon and a total of 290 people would be chosen to have cars. While the raffle would be limited to those living in Thermydon, it would still keep the Supra Dobranie for the time being. It would not be until June when Queen Athena would send the offer to the F.E.A to buy 300 Saetta automobiles for a total of $375,000.

She would also state in her autobiography, Two Parties, "...the Supra Dobranie would, typically, engage in this type of idiotic warfare with me. Sometimes, I believed, that they would limit my power to walk around the streets or talk to a relative. While I would always want to despise the Supra Dobranie for always trying to trap me in their jaws, I would not try to limit their rights for I follow our Constitution. They should be happy I am not some iron-fisted overlord like the Helroxi dogs."
