For clarification: Our characters are soldiers/whatnot from just about any walk of life, working(more or less) together to stop the X from taking over the entire world, correct?

@GarlandDaHero Replace 'world' with 'galaxy', or 'known space'. Planets are already in jeopardy, just not the core worlds yet.

I'm interested, though I'm kinda iffy on fighting something as virulent as the X with a bunch of ragtag Mercs.

@ArmorPlated The idea was that the mercs are being well-equipped to handle situuations and that they're not sending an army because that could potentially feed the enemy. Risk VS Reward kind of thinking behind that. It's not that you guys are The Plan. You are working TO the plan, to more directly attack the threat and to make it possible for a full-scale annihilation of the enemy to occur.

What? That doesn't really explain how a small team of mercs are going to survive a run-in with a hyperaggressive parasitic organism like the X, let alone fend them off or destroy them.

And what is this talk of "the plan"? How do you directly attack a plague other than firebombing entire planets?

@ArmorPlated First of all, protection: They have developed a personal containment field which they are attempting to get around worlds to keep them safe, but that's alot of work, and may do no good if the X get like a destructive space-faring army or something. Second, although this is stuff to be spoken about in the IC-briefing of the RP, I'll give you the general idea. Firebombing infected worlds has been going down already. These are delay-tactics to keep massive outbreaks from endangering the galaxy, but they need people to go find the heavy-hitters who have been dropping X down on the planets, otherwise you're just following the arsonist setting fire to everything and breaking down houses to stop the neighborhood from going up...while he's still setting fires. Basically, the military is doing military things, but they need a small group with modified weapons to catch up to the bastards, find out the precise nature of the problem, and then preoceed to the proper scragging phase. Why not just blow whatever ships and planets up that are involved too? Because they don't know where it all is. The X survived and they don't know exactly where they all are, except for places getting plague-bombed. They need information, first-hand data, and they want 'The Last Metroid' for both the vaccine and for their own purposes. Make no mistake, there is significant reason not to trust the Galactic Federation, but you have to work with them because the alternative right now is pretty damn terrible. The worst what-ifs of the series are happening right now: A huge outbreak and no Samus to help them. Does that clear things up a little?

Yeah, that clears a lot up. So the protective shields keep X from infecting a host as long as they've got Energy? I'm guessing that means run-ins with X will turn them into persistent threats, since they can re-form? That'll be a neat setpiece to work around.

I can see how this is going to work. I'll try to piece together a character for the setting.

@ArmorPlated Good to know. And yes, part of the threat is that you're making sure you keep your energy up so that the X don't just swarm you in blob form and infect the hell out of you. Whereas Samus' suit could explode, this is a case of losing containment and being at severe risk of immediately becoming food.

This is what I have so far. He is a powerful being but not unstoppable and his Aegis doesn't cover the parasites since they're very hush hush.
