Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should.
Ian Malcolm, Jurassic Park, 1993

The 21st century was the dawn of humanity's advancement. Technology had expanded at rapid pace, benefiting humanity's future, especially those who were living in developing third-world nations across the globe. Diseases thought to be incurable were able to be cured, and species were saved from the brink of extinction caused by human encroachment upon their natural habits. The 21st century seemed like a nice era to live in, and it only continued to be better century to live in as the years went on.

Seemed.

Whilst the 21st century was a century of technological marvel, it was also one of political turmoil. Countries found themselves at odds over nuclear technology and terrorism, rocking the political climate of the globe. With nations bickering over tariffs and economic issues, some conspiracy theorists considered the chance of another world war taking place, and in the end, the conspiracies they had established would prove to be partly true.

The United States, despite having the strongest military power on Earth, were sure that tensions with countries like Russia and China would break out into open warfare. They knew they had an edge over their political rivals, yet the United States wanted more. Project JX-04132, otherwise known as Project Nimbus, was a military project aimed at controlling teleportation for the American military. Would it had been successful, the United States would've been able to teleport entire armies and fleets to different fronts.

Despite their attempts at harnessing godly powers, the United States were unable to control what they created. Unbeknownst to the scientists working on Project Nimbus, a small error in their calculations opened a connection to an ancient timeline hosting an prehistoric Earth. Time rifts appeared throughout the planet, sending nations into panic as dinosaurs and other primordial creatures walked through the portals confused and hungry. Society as it was known began to collapse, and the world population begun to plummet until it was barely a blimp on the radar.

Now, after several decades, the 22nd century is rolling around the corner. Earth has been ravaged by dangerous beasts, and humanity still struggles on to regain its place at the top of the food chain with mini settlements scattered throughout the globe. However, you aren't some important settlement figure, such as the leader or a doctor. You are a youth trying to live how a kid should live, having fun with your childhood and getting into mischief despite knowing nothing of the world that came before.

The only issue is that with mischief comes trouble–five and half to eight metric tons of trouble.

PLEASE tell me you can play as a dinosaur (ik it says human but still). If you can, I shall loose my shit and make something cool. (And no not simply a T-Rex or Raptor - but something unique)

I have a few questions tho:

is the apocalypse solely due to dinosaurs, or is their something bigger at play? i.e. massive power outage/planned apocalypse

are the dinosaurs giant, featherless monsters a la jurassic park or calm, aggressive animals like in real life? Either way is cool, but I'm wondering.

@PandaLizard I'm not speaking for @Sola, but if the art in the top is applied, the dinosaurs will be relatively accurate, based on the artist's work.

Fun fact: this picture by the artist is currently my desktop background.

I would prefer everyone to be human. That being said, I won't stop anyone from having something to do with a dinosaur (within reason). As of right now, I'm thinking of my own character being like a falconer, training an Archaeopteryx or some other feathered bird-like dinosaur.

The apocalypse is mainly due to the sudden appearance of dinosaurs. You'd have them wrecking havoc on civilization, mainly due to the surprise effect. Dinosaurs have been extinct for 65 million years and now they're suddenly in a "lost world," confused and stressed by the change in the surrounding area. I imagine there would be power outages and other aspects of an apocalypse due to neglect caused by the forced departure of civilian workers, and/or any battles that might take place between military vs. dinosaurs. Someone has to protect the civilians from those carnivores, after all. There might even be those like the DPG in JW:FK, who would be trying to protect the dinosaurs and, as a result, gather information from a living creature rather than fossilized bone.

In regards to your other question, I would imagine the latter. I'm a sucker for the Jurassic franchise, but even I know that the Velociraptors in the franchise aren't true Velociraptors even with frog DNA, being more along the lines of Deinonychus, and were also feathered. However, since the world of Dinosaurs is ever changing (like the T.Rex being a scavenger or hunter debate), I may rely on the Jurassic franchise somewhat since it exists as a simplified platform for some species, barely changing from film to film. Plus, it might help with writing dinosaur and human interaction.

Something that jumped to mind recently was the dinosaurs that will be appearing. Could fictional species possibly appear, with the justification being how (relatively) rare fossilization is? As an example: Terra Nova's Acceraptor/"Slasher", among the series' other fictional species?

Terra Nova

I'm not sure as of right now. I'd have to think about it.

You got me interested, especially since all the possibilities of humans with dinosaurs. Ankylosaurus bulldozers, Parasaurolophus steeds, Dilophosaurus hunting assistants... Personally, I'm thinking of perhaps a kid that has a troodon similar to a pet dog, or who's family breed and slaughter thescelosaurus.

The novels and junior novels are significantly better than the miniseries, as much as I loved it as a kid.

That aside, I think "tame" dinosaurs is a bad idea, but I suppose it all depends on how much time has passed since everything went bad. For example, it would be exceedingly difficult to tame large carnivores.

I was thinking that it would depend on mostly size. Smaller creatures (maybe like Compsognathus) would be easier to tame, with larger creatures being less likely. For instance, the Hadrosaurids might be possible, since they're somewhat like big cows. Large carnivores would be an absolute no, however.

My thinking, more or less. After all, I seriously doubt an eight-ton predator would take the not-even-two-hundred-pound humans as more than a snack, unless it had dealt with humans that had firearms or other weapons powerful enough to hurt it. A one-pound insectivore/scavenger is definitely a lot more likely.
