"Finishing" a Man (and Getting Away With It)

As a young girl, Visia lived on the street by herself for five years. When she was ten, she met another lost, homeless girl who was only seven at the time. Her name was Penelope, but Visia called her "Pepper". The two girls became incredibly close friends and, as the grew up, a very formidable duo. Pepper was the brains, Visia was the brawn. Pepper would orchestrate plans to steal food and supplies and Visia would execute those plans. While both girls could certainly survive on their own, they work better together. While Visia (who was sixteen at the time) was coming home from a mission - a mission she successfully completed - she came to find the home Pepper and she stayed at was up in flames. She ran inside, trying to find any sign of her best friend. When she finally found her friend, it was too late. Pepper was being held hostage by a man dressed in dark clothing. He carried a sword that he held at Pepper's neck. Visia was unable to save her friend. The mysterious man made off with Pepper before Visia was then ambushed by several people dressed in dark clothes. She was able to fight off all of them (though not without difficulty, as these people were using some weapons she'd never seen before), but she felt as if she had still failed. The only person she had ever cared about was gone and she hadn't been able to save her. From then on out, Visia not only vowed to avenge her friend (whom she assumed to be dead) by killing the man that took Pepper away, but she also vowed to kill him with a weapon that was all-too-familiar with… a sword. Visia devoted so much of her time to learn how to swordfight after losing Penelope. Around that time, a woman from Madame Geraldine's Finishing School for Young Ladies of Quality came by. She saw incredible potential in Visia and took her to Madame Geraldine's Finishing School. Visia felt very uncomfortable at first. She was never one for "skirts" and "petticoats". She preferred to wear trousers and blazers. However, she grew to love the school, especially since it taught her more ways to fight, among other very useful skills. Since Visia arrived so very late to the school she had to work extra hard to be able to graduate (graduation was only two years away). She enjoyed the challenge, though. All of her hard work paid off and Visia graduated at the top of a majority of her classes.

Penelope was born into a very wealthy and respected family. There was nothing to complain about the luxurious life she lived while with her family. Unbeknownst to her, however, her family was illegally selling weapons on the black market and giving secret intel to different groups of criminals, gangs, and other scum. Her parents often secretly met with black market salesmen. They're usually very good at persuasion. They almost always got their way… until one day where everything went wrong. They met with a man who they were unable to persuade. They got into a big argument and ended up leaving the meeting without having sold anything. Penelope's parents thought that was it. They thought they would never hear from or see the man again. And in a way, they didn't but the man still got the last laugh. He sent two of his best agents to Penelope's home. They killed a maid and butler and dressed in their clothes. They ended up putting poison in Penelope's parent's drinks, killing them. They shot and killed everyone else that worked there… except young Penelope. They left the poor, seven-year-old girl alone. She then wandered outside of the house and onto the streets. She soon met another girl named Visia and two of them became best friends. Always looking for one another, always working together. Visia even gave Penelope the nickname "Pepper". There was rarely a moment where they were on their own. Until one day, at the old, run-down home Visia and Penelope lived in, Penelope was ambushed by the same man who orchestrated the murder of Penelope's parents (though Penelope did not know that at the time). He took Pepper away and eventually she found herself at the Polytechnique Institute of Arts and Sciences. There she became skilled at making poisons and potions as well as making and building weapons. She never actually used what she made. Pepper was never a fighter. She was always better at more "behind the scenes" work, though she did learn how to fight while at the school. Minister Maxwell Chandler visited the school from time to time and was always impressed by Penelope's gift for making potions and weapons. When she graduated from the school, he not only asked her to be part of the Craftsman Guild (which he is the head of) but also offered her a high-ranking job at one of his munitions factories, to which she accepted both offers. All through-out Penelope's time at the Polytechnique Institute, she had to masquerade as a guy. She still currently has to masquerade as one or she might lose her job (or worse).

1. Would you mind elaborating on Visia and Penelope's powers under the "gifts" section? I'm assuming Visia's gift is communicating w/ machines and Penelope's gift is manipulating metal right now based on their guilds (?)

2. I'm also assuming that Penelope masqueraded as a boy to go to the Polytechnique Institute (seeing as it's an all-boys' school and the headmaster really doesn't like it when girls from Madame Geraldine's sneak over); is the secret out that Penelope is actually a girl?

1. Yes, Visia does have the ability to communicate with machines, especially ones that are of the flying variety. Penelope's is manipulating metal and easily turning it into some kind of weapon (which is a gift she hates to have).

2. I'm going to pretend I didn't forget about the Polytechnique Institute being an all-boys school in my quest to finish my character sheets asap and say yes, Pepper masqueraded as a boy while at the school (so her hair was not as long as it is in the photos I attached then). She has not revealed herself to be a woman yet, though I wouldn't be surprised if a few people suspect she may be hiding something.
