It’s not that he can’t make a decision, though, it’s just that he can see so many options and alternatives that it takes time for him to sort through them all. His intelligence also makes him absentminded at times. He’s got so much going on in there that even he can’t always keep up with himself. Maybe that’s why he got into gardening.
Oliver is honest, open, warm and trustworthy, and expected the rest of the world to be the same. He was bullied a lot in school, and soon found out that the world is not the haven he envisioned. How did you discover your powers: Chlorokinesis: Oliver always grew plants that were larger than others, and his garden always yielded a bigger crop than others, but he and his family never thought anything of it. Oliver had green fingers, and that was it. He didn’t realise it could be anything else until he discovered his other powers. He started experimenting with Chlorokinesis and Terrakinesis when he did.
Nature Enhancement: Oliver had lived a happy, rather sheltered life until he started going to school. The strange, serious boy who always knew all the answers and had strong opinions on how plants and animals should be treated didn’t fit in very well. This led to a stressful time for Oliver, which only got worse when he got older. Alone and rejected, Oliver spent a lot of time in the woods with the family dog, a border collie named Joe. One day, when Oliver was 16, Joe ran out into the street to greet him as he came home from school. He never saw the car that hit him, and all Oliver could do was watch in horror as the horrible scene unfolded.
At first it had seemed as if Joe had managed to jump out of the way, but Oliver soon realised it was the sheer force of the impact that had sent the dog flying. Joe landed by the side of the road as the car sped on, never even slowing down. Oliver ran to his friend and dropped down in the dirt next to the dog. He could tell there was nothing he could do, so he stroked his best friend and sat there, waiting for it to be over. He looked up a few times, but it appeared nobody had noticed the event that shook his world. After a few seconds, Joe started breathing more easily, and even placed his head on Oliver’s knee. Oliver was sure it would all be over soon, but over the next few minutes, Joe kept getting stronger and stronger and fifteen minutes later, the dog got to its feet, barked happily and started licking Oliver’s face.
Shocked, Oliver spent a few minutes checking Joe for injuries, but could find nothing wrong with him. He kept a close watch on the dog the rest of the day, but Joe seemed his old self again.
General History: Oliver is an only child. His parents, Olivia and James, had almost given up hope on ever having children when his mother got pregnant with Oliver. Oliver’s parents adored him, and his mother stayed home to take care of him. It was a strain on the family budget, but as Olivia’s skills as a gardener saved them a lot of money on groceries, and even made them some money during harvest seasons. Oliver soon joined his mother in the garden, and harvests were more bountiful every year.
When Oliver started school, he left the cocoon he’d been raised in, and was confronted with the harsh reality of life. At school, nobody adored him. They thought he was weird and were perhaps a little intimidated by him. That little boy who always knew the answer to every question and asked such strange questions in return. That little boy who spent all his free time in the garden or camping in the woods. That strange boy who talked to plants and animals. That strange boy who seemed so confident, so secure in his right and reason for being.
His parents saw Oliver’s bewilderment, but there was little they could do. They could not conjure up any friends for him, but they did realise his need for companionship and acceptance. For his 13th birthday, they bought him Joe, a beautiful short haired border collie. Within a week, Joe and Oliver were as thick as thieves. Oliver was his own happy self again, life in the Young house returned to normal, and all was right with the world. Until of course that faithful day when Oliver was 16 and Joe got hit by a car.
After the incident, Oliver and Joe entered the house as if nothing had happened. The bus had been a few minutes early, so his mother hadn’t missed them yet. Under the guise of a mountain of homework, Oliver fled upstairs, with Joe on his heels. He simply needed some time to compose himself. They’d learned about mutants in school, and Oliver didn’t think it would increase his popularity if his classmates had another reason to fear him. He turned on his computer and googled animal healing, and soon came across the term Nature Enhancement. He liked the term and what came with it. He cross-referenced Nature Enhancement with gardening and came across Chlorokinesis. He smiled to himself as he realised that that was why their garden was always doing so well. That evening, he sat down with his parents, and they had a long talk. The outcome was that Oliver was to hide his powers for as long as possible.
Oliver had always been fond of camping and hiking, but after his discovery, he started spending even more time in the woods. He spent his time experimenting with his powers and discovered that plants could be used as both defensive and offensive weapons. On one occasion he even managed to make the ground itself move. He wondered if he could affect the earth itself, but he could not say for certain whether he was influencing the earth or the roots of the grass growing on the clearing. Knowing that he could defend himself against his bullies if he wanted to, however, made him care even less about how they treated him. He also experimented with his capacity to heal animals and plants and was dismayed to discover that he could only heal, not recover. Once a living being ceased to be a living being, there was nothing Oliver could do about it.
When Oliver was 18 and finished with high school, his path seemed clear. He was to become a landscape architect and enrolled into college with high hopes. Before he could start, however, Charles Xavier came to his house and offered him a place among his students. He wanted Oliver’s help in bringing down Experiment X. His parents were afraid for his safety, but Oliver knew what it was to be bullied and abused and decided to join the cause.
