Girlie1Bomba Now with new and improved tongue!

Heya!

Your Girlie here.

So I been here a few months now and only now have I seen this thing called 'High Casual.' At first I laughed when I saw it because I thought it was a joke regarding a certain whacky-tabacky green plant ๐Ÿ˜˜ But upon a seeing it a bit more and doing a bit more investigation, it actually has nothing to do with getting high and it's actually... like some kinda' writing level in the Casual section for Advanced writers...? Am I reading that correctly?

I lurked the ICs of the 'High Casual' and they are pretty much Advanced posts but termed 'High' for some reason in the Casual section? Like wut...? Why not post up your RP in the Advanced section?

So is this a thing where Advanced RPers just wanted to advertise and snag peeps in the Casual section since the numbers are greater there and it just became known as 'High Casual' as in 'Higher (Elevated) Level of Writing?' Kinda' sorta' makes sense to me. But anyways...

Just curious as to how it's all tiered up in Casual. Because I'm thinking I'll just join in 'High Casual' RPs too then ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜Š

@Girlie1Bomba Blame the system and how everyone gravitates to Casual. Free and Advanced are rather barren, mainly because most people prefer the section where everyone is. After all, something posted in Casual is likely to be seen by more people since that is simply where the core of RPG is. This has created a "tier-like" system, where you have Low Casual (which is basically Free), Casual, and High Casual (which is more or less Advanced).

Though, regarding everyone's opinions on Low Casual/Casual/High Causal, I imagine that topic is a beaten dead horse now. There was a thread a few months ago that brought the system into light, but I doubt it really went anywhere.

Before this topic gets closed because this debate tends to draw a rather... volatile clash of opinions... going to throw in my two cents.

There are a lot of reasons and they vary for everyone. This can include but is not limited to..
  • Wanting faster posting than what is normally done in Advanced.
  • Drawing a larger crowd.
  • Not enough confidence in ones own writing.
  • A bad experience dealing with Advanced Rpers.
  • Teaching.
  • Where they are used to writing.
  • Rp started more casual and progressed over time.
  • Where their friends feel comfortable.

For me, it is a complicated issue but I tend to house a vast majority of mine there because I put a lot of teaching and mentoring into my Rps on top of the complexity of them. To me part of a Gm's job is to teach, so I do that. In casual I do that much more than in Advanced. Rpers tend to be more open to learning I have found in Casual than Advanced. That is just me personally.

@Lady Amalthea@Sola

Thanks for answers!

Wow. So this seems like a touchy subject if I'm reading into this correctly?

I just found it curious is all. I understand all points brought up but still... It just sounds to me like High Casual qualifies as Advanced level. And it may seem to newcomers that the two separated as such may create a sense of one being better than the other. Also perhaps newcomers seeing tiers in a catchall category may feel like they may be joining an 'inferior' RP seeing High and Low descriptors. Interesting.

But anyways... thank you for clearing up my confusion and yeeeeeah for sure I can roll with all of it๐Ÿ˜˜

Yeah. The majority of guild is there.

Be a fool to go off mining in advanced when the ores so much richer in the casual mines.

Also there's various levels in a RP.
Some might have less advanced worlds, more advanced plots, but some parts might be casual, while others advanced not quite fit in the other. Charceters, words, plots and writing may be at different levels.

High casual is a good summery for one's that are not quite one or the other.
Best of a few worlds.

'High Casual; is a redundant title that's become somewhat ingrained into the site but no one's willing to do anything about it, so here we are. Cheers.

I disagree.

But mostly because I struggle with grammar and exact super details adavamvmced requires. Plus the more serious nature.

I prefer a alittle lighter hearted, and am a little loose on my grammar. Heorver I do also write some pretty long, detailed posts with decent amounts of backstory and so.

So... It's a mix. I have casual and advanced elaments in my writing. But not one fully.

Obviously none of the "rules" for each section are actually set in stone and enforced. But let's say they were. Subsequently the Advanced section has four guidelines for quality, and I quote:
  • longer posts
  • in-depth plots
  • character development
  • extensive settings/lore
Now, again, pretending these are actually enforced, you cannot pick and choose, at your leisure, which rules you like and which you don't. If your story does not or cannot adhere to all four characteristics then it is not an Advanced RP, simply put.

Perhaps "High Casual," then, is a failsafe for the wary player. He acknowledges that his game follows some, or most, of these guidelines, but does not wish to deceive anyone into thinking it follows all of them. So he calls it High Casual and leaves it where it actually meets Section standards, albeit exceeding them in some measures.

For me personally "High Casual" means Advanced in every way except post length because my experience with players is writing more than they read, and long posts tending toward the redundant side moreover. If two pieces of writing manage to convey precisely the same emotions and events, but one is 800 words long while the other is 2,200, the shorter one will have richer prose, and a richer story, every time.
