Only time will tell where this goes. It could be good, but it could also take a turn for the worse. And to be fair, Ghost in the Shell wasn't a total failure. ScarJo's casting was a misstep, but everything else was fairly enjoyable. As for Death Note... well, Defoe's casting was one of the few saving graces. Dragon Ball Evolution, however, was just pure crap.

Ah, this looks like it will fulfill my horrible niche taste in horror/thriller movies. If only Sony wasn't the producer, I may actually be looking forward to watching it.

So, "My Hero Academia" fans, it seems your series is getting the "Death Note in the Shell Ball: Evolution" treatment. Thoughts?

My initial thoughts is that it's funny how people always use the American live action adaptations as examples instead of the way worse Japanese ones that exist.

I liked the Ghost in the Shell movie a lot. I thought they did a tremendous service to the original, and I liked all of the cast. It was definitely one of the better western adaptations of anime that's come out. Though, to be fair I have not watched the original for over a decade, so my memory is a bit fuzzy.
It does leave me in two minds though. On one hand it shows that there's potential for more coming out that get it right, but on the other hand I don't want to see a flood of adaptations especially when it's properties that can't be adequately distilled down to a single film.

It's just unfortunate that they seem to all start out with good intentions and then they go totally off the rails and start making unnecessary changes that damage the final product.

Shame that studio oversight is a thing cuz execs will sacrifice passion for profit.

Too goddamn right.
They have the audacity to demand all these changes and then blame the director or screenwriter when it performs poorly.

"Laughed out loud with the rest of the theater, in moments I can't be sure were even intentional."

-A Horror Movie

-Halloween 2018

I'm sure that's a blurb you could put on the back of the box.

Sounds like it was a good movie, then. All the positive buzz was well earned.

My older brother thought it was the best horror movie he's seen in the past five years. (Though he shares in my opinion that this year was not a good one for movies, so take that how you will.)

If you just want a body count, you'll get that. It's not boring, which is how (YMS) and others who gave it negative reviews said it was. But people saying it was excellent? Yeah, no. Not even by horror standards.

It may have the dumbest characters in existence, which makes it impossible to feel an ounce of sincere tension. (Mostly because a lot of the cast are adults which makes the dumb/unlikable character syndrome make even less sense. But that's probably because it's also a comedy, which only makes the movie tone deaf.)

And it has some of the most predictable events/scenes in any horror movie I've seen, in which many get dragged out to near asinine lengths in attempts to build atmosphere. I hadn't watched much of Halloween's other films, so I can't really judge it on anything other than it's own merits. Really, the kindest things I can say about it is that it's competently shot and scored. (There's many points where there is no music/and there's not many overly loud jump scare stings.)

Halloween never needed sequels. This is why the best films are rhe ones that emulate the first the best.

Oh what a surprise YMS disliked a popular movie.

I have no cart in this race I'm not super huge on horror movies as a whole, I just think it's hilarious that there are like four movies all with the title 'Halloween' and this one is both a sequel and a giant fuck you to every other Halloween sequel despite several of them still having Laurie Strode in it.

Generally though I think this year has been pretty good for horror movies, discounting the whole disaster that was Slender Man and its ilk.

But also:

And it has some of the most predictable events/scenes in any horror movie I've seen, in which many get dragged out to near asinine lengths in attempts to build atmosphere.

Yeah that's just how horror movies tend to do things.

@Fabricant451 I mean I suppose that's pretty predictable too. But I can at least understand his given perspective.

I mean horror movies aren't exactly my favorite genre. But I've always enjoyed mystery/thriller stories, and horror is often the closest I can get to having those elements in my movie.

I've been meaning to watch The Quiet Place, since I've seen more good things about that. (and it also doesn't sound like the twist is trying to be clever and "give a message" like, The Babadook, Get Out, It Follows and the recent trend of horror movies attempting to insert some hamfisted point in it.) *Not speaking of their individual quality.*

There's one or two things on Netflix I may watch as well. Just to find something better, because I certainly hope that isn't the best horror movie I see this year.

@Fabricant451 It had black people in it and it covered racism. Its hamfisted propaganda by default.

Whether you like it or not, I don't want to feel (even in the sense) that I'm getting preached/lectured to in my horror movie. Your tolerance for it may vary.

If it wasn't already clear. I hadn't watched those movies I've mentioned, mostly because I almost always spoil myself to reviews to avoid watching movies that I'll likely not enjoy. But that presumption does me no favors, because the idea that there's even a possibility that "this movie was about you ya know, wag wag finger wag" is the kind of movie I don't want to see. Because at the very best, it preaches to the choir.
