First and foremost,
My greetings to you,

the reader.

I am the UndeadSpartan, usually referred to as Undead, Spartan, or just Dead.
Since Pokémon seems to be quite popular around here, and I am a fan as well, I figured I'd try running a Pokémon thing.
Another thing I'm a fan of is irregular campaigns, so rather than send you on a a quest to fight dragon-types and save princesses,
I'm hoping to interest you all in a campaign of thievery and shenanigans.

Without further ado,

The setting

Arotura,

a world in which humans have built castles for protection and Pokémon have always lived in the wild. In the past, strong Pokémon scared humans, so they built walls and towers from which they could repel Pokémon with bows and arrows. It was a dark time, and many castles were destroyed by agitated Pokémon... Nowadays, humans and Pokémon coexist, lending each other strength and taking each other to new heights. But while life has improved since the dark ages, not all is well.

In Venirin, a small kingdom once known the most prosperous in all of Arotura, the wise king Karos has recently passed away. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, as the eldest prince would inherit the throne. However, Karos' son Jurius wasn't half as kind or wise as his late father was, and as one of his first acts as king he declared the expansion of Venirin; a conquest that started with the swift assimilation of the previously unclaimed territory around Venirin. What inevitably followed was a declaration of war against the other kingdoms, as Jurius had no intention of stopping Venirin's expansion yet.

This war still rages today, but many know better than to involve themselves in it. Instead of fighting for Jurius' promised riches, they raid towns and villages, simply taking what valuables the unfortunate villagers might have. They hide in the ruins of fallen castles, dense forests or sometimes even the inhospitable Karadhor mountains, waiting for their opportunity to strike. Most of these thugs haven't known a day of honest work in their life. Some were forced into this, having been orphaned when the war started almost a decade ago, while others may simply not know any better, getting by the same way their parents had to. Whatever their reasons, they have all found themselves here, stealing to escape starvation for themselves and their Pokémon partner.

OoC Information

Still with me? Great!

As you may have deduced from the introduction, in this setting you'd play as one of these thugs and their Pokémon. Whether you want to be a laid-back thug simply living a lazy life or a Robin Hood-esque rogue who shares his spoils with the poor, it's all fine, so long as you're an outlaw in one way or another.

The technological level of the setting is roughly comparable to the 17th century, save for the development of weapons. Being a bandit/thief/thug of some sort, you'd likely have a weapon and some combat ability, which you may want/have to use in order to overpower the people you're robbing and/or defending yourself from, in case your Pokémon partner is too busy battling theirs.

Poké balls don't exist yet, so anyone is limited to a single Pokémon partner they can rely on, which they've raised, tamed or otherwise bonded with. As the story develops I may allow people to train a second Pokémon, assuming they've somehow done something to create a bond with another Pokémon during play. The same is true for mega evolution and Z-moves; you'll have to earn them during play.

At the start of the game you will have a single Pokémon partner, and some pretty basic equipment, such as a simple weapon, some form of armor, some ropes and perhaps a few torches.

The restrictions on your Pokémon partner are as follows;
  • It may not be legendary.
  • It may have any ability normally available to it. (Including hidden abilities)
  • It may be a 1st stage evolution, so long as it evolves at or before level 30. (So while you may have a Charmeleon, you may not have a Charizard or Volcarona at the start of the game.)

Furthermore, combat will not be move-based. I've found in the past that it's bad for immersion to, for example, be unable to have fire-type Pokémon light a bonfire because the only fire-type attack they know is fire blast. Therefore, if your Pokémon can do a thing, I will generally allow you to have it do that thing.

If you're still with me even now and have questions, don't hesitate to ask them. And with all of that said, I hope that I've been able to pique your interest.

P.S. I don't know how many of you will be turned away by this, but I'm hoping my playerbase can be active at a semi-daily basis. It doesn't need to be everyday, but it would be great if we could keep this thing moving at a steady pace.

@Milim Voila, a character sheet. I might add a field or two if I think of any in the future, but this should be a pretty complete version. Feel free to spruce it up with a little color if you like. (Also, the example CS is a bit barebones, but hopefully it gets the idea across.)

Overall I must admit I do very much like it, though there are a few points that caught my attention;
-You used "fuck them self" instead of "fuck themselves" or "fuck itself" and there's a few minor errors of similar nature. Not too important, but thought I'd mention.
-The image has pointy ears, however elves would not really be a thing in this setting. Since you don't mention them anywhere though, I assume he's not actually supposed to be an elf?
-The war started a decade ago, so if your character is 25, he'd have been 15 when it began.
-I don't believe that there realistically is any reason why eggs would be vibrantly colored like they are in the series. Still, there's plenty of ways to figure out it would be a Bagon egg in a Salamence's nest, so that too is mostly detail work.

I think it'd be fine to leave the first two as they are, but I'd appreciate it if you could make the changes to accomodate the last two points. Still, overall it looks like a fine sheet.

@UndeadSpartan I edited the things you asked about. Changed some ages around and the whole egg thing. The ears are definitely not part of my character, I honestly just thought the rest of it fit well enough for how i imagined him

Will be working on a CS, if I come up with something I like then I'll likely be joining you.

Question: You said we may not have final-stage evolution Pokemon from the start. I assume it is okay to have Pokemon with only one stage, such as Dunsparce or Druddigon?

Great! You are correct, I would in most cases be fine with this. Do be aware that there are certain exceptions to the rule, probably... I can't think of any yet, but if you find yourself in that unlucky spot... Well let's just hope you won't.

As for the progress;
@Th3King0fChaos@Milim@dragonpiece@Bartimaeus
I'm currently working on making the OoC, its content and its formatting. I should have it done before the end of the weekend. (hopefully before the end of Saturday, but that might be too ambitious.) Once I've finished it, I'll post it and send you guys a mention with a link.

Thanks for the interest so far! ^-^

Assuming Alolan forms are allowed, would they they still be called "Alolan"? That would assume the Alolan region has already been discovered, which I'm not sure how you want to go about that.

I also am wondering, in terms of Pokemon combat, are stats more relative? I'd like to imagine they are to some degree, as it gives "weaker" or lower-tier Pokemon (in Smogon terms) more leeway. It's a bit hard to give an example, perhaps, but if you want one I will try. @UndeadSpartan

Edit: Also, in terms of Pokemon ability, is their some sort of creative influence over them, on your part as the GM or ours as the players?
As some examples, if there is creative leeway:
A Pokemon has the ability Telepathy, as well as the ability...let's say, Technician. Would they be able to have both of them? Telepathy could be used to take orders from their trainer without verbal communication, etc. while still retaining the effects of the ability Technician.
More examples:
If a Pokemon has the ability Sheer Force, they may forego most or all technique when applying their attacks, but it makes their attacks that much more jarring for the receiver.
If a Pokemon has the ability Mold Breaker they can break more than just the abilities you could in the game, for example Excadrill(with Mold Breaker) could negate the bonus damage from Sheer Force.

This examples are based off what came up off the top of my head and do not reflect my expectations for Pokemon we will have/see.

I just wanted to ask these things to clarify, if none of this exists that's fine by me, and will not effect my likelihood to participate. ^^

Alright, so. Alolan forms will generally be allowed, but they'd most likely appear on the right side of the continent, with the swirly river and the lake. They'd have a different name, but I'll have to consult with the alphabet before I could tell you what it will be. xD

Stats will be somewhat relative, but not irrelevant. Dunsparce and the like will be more viable as a choice, but they still won't likely be top tier unless your combat roleplay is amazingly inventive.

Abilities may be subject to player and GM creativity, as a flat attack boost for technician when we barely use actual moves would be sort of lame. Instead I might be more lenient in letting you pull off maneuvers and trick shots compared to others, if you have the technician ability. I'd like to clarify though, when I said they may have any ability they normally have access to, I meant any single ability. So no combining abilities.

I took some liberties with the place of birth for the sake of filling out my character's background. I can absolutely change this if it doesn't match up with what you had in mind. Also, this is kind of a rough draft, so stuff might get changed by the time the OOC goes up.

It looks good! I've settled on names for the countries and their large cities, but there is no reason why you couldn't take some liberties with a small mining village. Korvak looks pretty good to me, and the events seem to make sense. The only thing I'd remark is that when a coal mine collapses, people would certainly be sent to save who and what they can, (generally not all that much,) and to check whether they can still use the mining site in the future... Still, that might perhaps be a good reason to skip town? Sudden influx of outside laborers and soldiers?

Additionally, the intention was to have the players form a group so you guys could take on larger heists together, so I hope the lone wolf thing won't get in the way too much for that.

@UndeadSpartan Thanks! I kind of assumed in my head the coal mining thing was a given, but I do suppose now I could have written that in there. And don’t worry, the lone wolf thing won’t prohibit her from group work; part of her character arc will be learning to get along with others and have meaningful relationships with people.

I have an idea involving a former knight of sorts and a Ralts, however I have a question. Would moves such as heal pulse and protect, ECT work on humans? If so is there a difference in the effects on humans vs Pokemon?

Right well, heal pulse would work on humans and I'd probably allow it to heal superficial damage such as cuts and bruised, but not broken bones and the like. The same will be true for using it on pokémon since I won't be using moves and etc. exactly as they appear in the game. Hitting someone with heal pulse twice when they're at the verge of collapsing and making them feel like they're in peak condition is a no-no.

As for protect, it only ever affects the user, so there's no way for humans to really benefit from it, since they can't learn (...most?) pokémon moves.

Overall, try to imagine what would be reasonable in reality and apply this.
