Kai wanted answers now, but it looks like the Kid expected more guests to show up. Not too far behind her another man came through the door, but he was off. His skin was grey and pallor. Her eyes tracked him, because she didn’t trust that he wasn’t something other than who he says he is. When he passed her, she got a whiff of him. He smelled like the frog she dissected when she was in high school. Like formaldehyde. No one was that pale and she’s seen some pale fuckers in her day. The type that burned in the sun, but he looked like if he burned, he’d rot. The more she thought about it, the more he seemed like a corpse. And only the undead could walk around and talk. She doesn’t believe in spiritual shit, but tell her there’s a zombie apocalypse and she’ll be the first to grab a gun. She backed away from him, moving closer to the man in the coat, ‘cause if he turned ravenous it’s better someone else’s ass and not hers.

There had to be more coming, but Gavin didn’t seem like he wanted to wait. As soon as the corpse came in she wasn’t all that patient for this either. He said the coat man’s name, Archer, and she hoped he wouldn’t say hers, which he didn’t. Good. As far as she’s concerned, her name was Brenda, until she tells anyone otherwise. What she didn’t expect was for Gavin to call the corpse’s bluff. So there’s more of them out there with some ringleader controlling them all. Fan-fucking-tastic. Just what she needed. There’s not enough people here to feast on if she needed to make a run. The corpse went to a corner of the room just as someone else came in and she stunk up the room something awful. Kai had to stop herself from vomiting, the smell was that bad. She got as far as she could and sank into an armchair with her shirt collar covering her nose.

He spouted bullshit about magic and chosen by angels or whatever. The more he spoke the more it sounded like those wiccan recruitment meetings her parents used to go to when she was little. Oooohhh. This had to be the work of her parents. Still trying to get her to believe in their pagan bullshit. The stinky girl had the right idea, before she took a hard left towards Christ. Fuck sakes, she’s stuck with a bible thumper, a pagan, and two other people that’s buying what he’s selling. She sighed.

“Look, okay, I don’t know why my parents gave you my information to recruit me for whatever pagan sect you’re part of, but I don’t believe in all this magic shit you’re talking about.” Her voice was muffled by her shirt, cause like hell she’s removing it. “Now hand over my contact information, forget my name, and pretend that I don’t exist. Think you can do that?”

“Pagan what now?” Mike’s eyebrows show upwards as he gripped the handle and broke the seal on the door, gently letting himself half-into the room.

His face was stubbles and there were bags under his eyes - the eyes themselves only just slightly more than half open - and he probably stank a little. Not too bad, not so much you could smell it from a distance. He was just looking forwards to a shower in the morning, assuming they were staying here.Behind the facade, as thick and well practiced and half-real as it was, his mind was buzzing with action. Some of that kind of brain activity you can’t really hide - but then who wouldn’t be thinking some pretty wild shit at this point?

The first this he registered was the people in the room. Younger than him for the most part, and inclusive of the young girl he’d given a quantum tenner to earlier, but not her apparent stalk-

The second, and more abrupt sensation that registered, was the smell of formaldehyde. It wasn’t that strong, but then it’s not really meant to be the kind of thing you smell in these places at all; and more than that, it wasn’t the smell of clean, bottled stuff, it was the smell of a body that had been worked on.He turned his head to the source.Ah. One of that guy’s men. Stinking of used formaldehyde. Ok.Not a red flag at all. “Uh... yeah nah I don’t know about pagan shit guys.” He began, his face scrunching a bit as he glanced behind himself, looking for an exit.

“I’m not really into that pagan stuff, buddy- uh, not that I’m judgin' or anything, I’m a Lutheran. Sorry.” He continued, a faint - maybe even distant - southern drawl coming out. "I'm sorry, my name's Mike, I'm an electrician, and uh, look, I'll admit I'm kinda curious about what y'all got going on here, but I'm in no hurry to like, join up or anything. Especially pagan shit - I'm real sorry but my ma would shoot me." He moved to put his blue trucker's cap back on.

The young woman had the right idea, he thought. The entire thing was terribly suspect - enough to merit being on your guard.

“Good, that’s one answer,” Gavin says to Zephyr, even as he noticed Dennis’ body language slump in presumed despair and resignation. He blinks, then says to the Undead, “Sorry. Got myself hopped up on my own power there for a minute - Not literally, of course, but metaphorically. And sorry too for the, umm… Suspicion. I do apologize for being too quick to dismiss you and ask for Haydrian.”

I just feel creeped out by zombies and the undead. Alexander wouldn’t be as much, though, He thought as he turned to Abigail and said, “All right, you can go - I won’t stop you.”

But it was his hope that someone else might. As for Kai, Gavin didn’t know how to respond, as he did not have a copy of her personal information on paper or on his own phone and even if he did, she was less expendable than Abigail and thus can’t be easily let go of. So he decided to let others take care of that problem as well... For one second.

The ball of silver fire on his other hand continued to float, but Gavin decided to shut it off and do another show of magical power, one harder to deny. Waving his right arm, he created a portal - Two portals, actually - the height and width of a normal person. Said portals led to a small log cabin with the tell-tale signs of an underground bunker underneath (and outside the log cabin, there was someone who fit the photo of Abigail’s uncle) and another gas station, one in the middle of the desert that Kai can recognize.

“As I said, go, I won’t stop you,” Gavin’s tone was heated. This, even though it was clear that Abigail’s destination was more desirable than Kai’s. Gavin was guileless enough to believe it’d work, but it was clear he was developing some base cunning.

Then at Mike’s entrance and subsequent words, Gavin decided to open a third portal at considerable expense to his reserves of magical energy, a portal that led to the outskirts of the city, “I am not a Pagan, I believe in just one God! Go believe whatever you all believe, I am starting to not care anymore - I’ll take whoever is willing to save the world with me and you can all go!”

Gavin knew Mike was lying, and also knew about Mike’s true identity. He was past caring.

“Aw now holy heck, boy!” Mike jumped out of his skin as the portals popped into existence, “look if I wanted to just up ‘n’ leave them I’d do it myself, you hear? I said I was curious, I just don’t know precisely what you’re talkin’ about is all. Ain’t exactly occurred to me before that I could go about saving the world or nothing, you know what I mean?”

Mike stepped inside the room and let the door close behind him as he took a few steps forwards and to the side - keeping the door in his view.

“Please, I didn’t mean to offend or nothing, I just don’t know what’s going on. None of us do. Say what you like about divine intervention or vision quests, but whatever it was we all saw was awful cryptic about it.” He held his hands up nonthreateningly, making his way further into the room, making clear his intentions to stay - at least for now - without saying it out loud.

“I’m interested in what you have to say about all this. I think on some level we all are - we all gotta be, at least. I think anyone would want an explanation, in our scenario, y’know what I mean?”

Abigail watched the spectacle with disillusionment. She shook her head. "N-nah. This ain't it. I ain't following a senior student with a short temper and no answers, and I'm 'specially not trustin' any weird wormholes he makes up. That's some devil-worship type shit right there." Tugging on her backpack straps, she turned to address Archer with a suitably politer tone. "It's mighty kind of you mister, but I don't think I want any dealin' with that kid over there, and if you're already signed up for his hijinks then I'm gonna have to decline. Y'all stay safe in your-...world savin' missions, I'm going home."

She nodded politely and left the motel, humming under her breath as she took the road southwest out of town.
