Jack looked over the files of the targets. While the Mantis would probably be the biggest known threat, having little information on the others wasn't excatly great. He remembered from his Father's teachings that Insect Youkai could be surprisingly tough, with carapaces forming chitin-like armour especially for the more monstrous Youkai. Jack listened to everyone's ideas and the general consensus was that they should stick togethe, which was probably a smart move. While splitting up might be more efficient, there is a real possibility that the dossier could be incomplete and there could be more Youkai. An ambush would not be fun.

The Brit watched as Sensei Kazama began to get up from his desk. It was probably time to get a move on. He overheard a couple of students talking about getting the train, which would be probably be easiest. Except for Jack. He approached Shuro, the girl who first mentioned the train, and bowed his head. "Please excuse the interruption... I was wondering if I could tag along?" He asked politely, although he began to rub the back of his head. "I... uhh... kinda don't know where it is." He admitted, chuckling a little.

"The same as always," Isana frowned as she said to herself before tucking her hands into her sleeves and turning towards the door.

"Such loyalty is admirable coming from you," she said in a sarcastic tone after listening to Shuro's dismissal of Soga's question.

"Either, even though I dislike to agree with the words of a delinquent, the only way to know what lies in someone else's heart is to ask them on your own," she said to the boy.

Her frown deepened with she heard their Instructor's lack of faith in their capabilities. However, she refrained to speak anything about that. If he thought they could "screw up" this mission, he shouldn't have given it to them in the first place. That said, Keiji's comment made it clear that not all of this lack of faith wasn't unwarranted.

"A warrior who has no confidence in his blade is as useless as a hammer that'll crack on the first blow. A battle is won or lost before it even begins, your lack of faith is the same as admitting defeat; a shame both to you and your opponent," she said.

"Anyway, we should get going already. We won't gain anything from standing around now that we are sure of what to do," Isana said as she left the club room after bowing one last time to their instructor.

The next train to the city's outskirts was going to wait for them if they weren't at the station when it arrived after all.

Well, it wasn’t like she could drive all of them there anyways.

Folding up the handout into a neat little square, Sorano tucked it into the inner pocket of her uniform and motioned for Seishiro and Yayoi to follow after her. Neither of them particularly stood out as important to form any meaningful relationship with yet, one looking like an absolute punk and the other being an absolute slob, so the bespectacled Hunter maintained her usual fast pace, not particularly caring whether or not they lagged behind. If they couldn’t walk that fast, just jog.

Two minutes and fifteen seconds later, they were at the school parking lot. Sorano walked up to a beat-up, garishly painted Jeep, its boxy design at odds with the smooth curves of the other vehicles in the lot. It had been second-hand, or perhaps even third-hand, but the vehicle was cheap, could handle rough terrain, and she wasn’t particularly attached to it in any fashion. If she was going to have to launch this into a giant youkai, she wouldn’t feel too bad about it at all. The doors unlocked with a twist of the key, and she slipped into the spotless interior, devoid of crumbs or dust or anything else that would appear unseemly. As she adjusted her mirrors and seat, the sharp-eyed girl had but a couple ground rules.

“Put on your seat belts, put away your snacks, don’t use your phone, and don’t sleep. If you need to use a restroom, hold it in until we arrive. If you’re loud or distracting, I’ll be ejecting you. Understand?”

Soga Emishro

Talks To: @GingerBoi123 @TheWindel

The forthcoming answers did little to assuage Emishro’s concerns. They, in accordance to Hunter doctrine would err on the side of a dead youkai, rather than pursue the question of motive further. Perhaps they were correct in that mindset, after all most of them had been fighting the supernatural beings since the age of fourteen, while he himself hadn’t so much as seen one. Only the brief descriptions from his mother, and the papers clutched in his hands at that moment gave him insight into the mysterious youkai. Emishro glanced down at the mantis’ name, marked in standard ink upon the page. Shuro’s and Isana’s suggestions were earnest to be sure, but how likely would it be that he could talk to Gin? Wouldn’t the Bakekonchu resist their efforts to kill the hive leader Kumogori? Or would Gin stand by and do nothing as justice was dealt? Emishro did not know much about Bakekonchu, but surely a member of a communal species wouldn’t allow its leader and hive-mates to be slaughtered while holding a conversation explaining his actions with some curious human child. The whole thing sounded ridiculous Emishro’s head. Kazama-Sensei’s uncertain guess at an explanation would probably be the best answer Emishro was going to get, and it weighed heavily on his young mind. Would it be right to kill the burgeoning colony, Gin, Kumogori, and all the others on the basis of a probable threat? No jury, no judge, only young executioners following orders.

Nevertheless, Emishro kept his reservations to himself. He was new, the rookie, what did he know compared to these more experienced hunters? His reputation was already on thin ice and mumbling about moral objections about creatures who could very well be planning the mass slaughter of innocents surely wouldn’t help his case.

Outwardly Emishro frowned and nodded, acting as if it all made sense to him now and he had no further questions. “If I can, I shall surely follow your advice.” He said simply, giving Shuro the quickest of glances before forcing his eyes to rest somewhere else, anywhere else and that happened to be the foreigner. He was a Westerner, that much was obvious. Emishro had seen enough television to recognize the accent as that of an English speaker, though whether that meant Oceania, the English Isles, or America he could not say. Giving a good-natured laugh he rested a friendly hand on Jack’s shoulder. He’d heard somewhere Westerners appreciated physical contact. Or was it some other culture?

Crud! Too late now.

“You and I can be lost together friend; I have no idea how to navigate these streets. I’m Emishro by the way.” Emishro said, trying his best to keep the introduction from slipping into awkward territory. He discreetly slid his hand off Jack’s shoulder clasping both of his hands behind his back. “Best we stick to someone more streetwise than us, erm, if you don’t mind of course?” The last part being directed at both Shuro and Jack. Talking to people had always been so easy back home, where he’d known every one of his neighbors. This was different somehow, new territory that left him feeling nervous and awkward like he’d never felt before. Taking a deep breath Emishro released the pent-up energy with a silent exhale, trying to convince his body and mind to relax. He was here, meeting other Hunters, and about to set off to go fight Youkai as he had always dreamed. Things could be worse, he just needed to get out of his own head, that was all.

Seishiro was surprised at the rate at which the bespectacled girl took off, and jammed his printout into his jacket pocket to follow after her. He was forced to pick up his pace so that she didn't leave him behind, and his boots slamming against the floors echoed through the hallway. When they finally reached her car, he was surprised by the make of it. He was expecting someone so clean-cut to be driving a pristine sedan or compact; something with really good gas mileage or similarly boring yet practical features. He was quite familiar with off-roaders, tractors, and similar vehicles from his time living in the country.

However, as soon as she started laying into them with a laundry list of rules, his mouth tightened in irritation. This wasn't just an affectation of his carefully constructed punk persona, he was just genuinely annoyed by being bossed around. His father, while strict with training and when the two of them were in battle, was surprisingly lax when it came to disciplining Seishiro himself. He took care of the house and his chores without prodding, since he knew they needed to be done, and was generally left to his own reconnaissance.

"Come on," he groaned, climbing into the car's passenger seat, "If you spend any more time giving us a bunch of frickin' rules we're gonna be late." He reached under the seat to adjust its position, and immediately slammed it back as far as it would go. Comfortable with this amount of legroom, he propped his heavy boots up on the dashboard. Looking back at the driver, he clapped his hands in a goading gesture. "Let's get this show on the road!"

Following Sorano was pretty easy. Her brisk pace was nothing compared to her own menace of a hallway ass hustling. In fact, it was actually considerably slower. Though the speed at which she left the classroom was noteworthy. Usually, people stood around for a considerable amount of time, like some sort middle-class family that had just finished their meal at a restaurant. The jeep that Sorano took the two of them two was similar to her, in some respects. It was probably chosen for purely its utility. But it was pretty weird how there was one in Ayabukuro, considering how rare import cars were. It would have probably made sense to use a T*yota H*lux. Those things were even used in wars.

Of course, her ground rules were simple. Don't be turd was a pretty easy instruction to follow. Yayoi may have been a slob, but she wasn't a goober that disregarded all rules.

After a brief crumb dust-off outside, she entered the backseat of the jeep. She was instantly greeted by the hardhitting disrespect of the punk. In an effort of not getting booted from the car, she put on the seatbelt and lifted her hands up in surrender. It was as if she was saying "I have nothing to do with this man". Though, her face still looked as though she were a dead fish. Body language was hard when one's face constantly was the visual representation of white noise.

Shuro met Soga’s gaze when an answer was given, and her sights remained on him even as he turned away. Whether she was satisfied with it was difficult to pinpoint and it wasn’t like any of them had any mind-reading powers. She almost wished she did when their Sensei mentioned Gin’s past and she wondered if that would have any relevance in their mission tonight. After all, a cornered Youkai was usually a dangerous one in their experience.

With their Sensei leaving the classroom, it was indication that they all should start moving out. Shuro was just about to leave herself when Keiji announced he was taking the train too. And given how Isana had already clarified the running ones right now, that meant they’d be sharing a third passenger. Much to her annoyance.

“Whatever, three’s a good crowd number I guess-” Then the foreigner walked up to her, Jack stating his intent to tag along for the ride. “Well, that’s not-” Then Soga immediately returned to give his opinion on the matter, clearly wanting to take the train too. “Hold on, you can’t all just come along. Hey Sorano, you got two more-” The bespectacled Hunter was already walking out the classroom with her own group to follow. “Isana, you can’t just-” There went the shrine maiden not long after.

“Uggggghh. Fine, do whatever,” Shuro said with a heavy, bemoaning shrug. She didn’t think she’d be babysitting a bunch of people who didn’t know where they were going, but here she was. “Yeah, yeah, just make sure you don’t get any more lost than you already are, cause I’m not going out my way to track you down.” Not at all too happy with the situation she was lumped in, Shuro was quick to catch up with Isana and assumed the three boys would follow her towards the train station. By some means, the group of two sprouted into five now. It wasn’t too long before she caught up with Isana, nor would it be to get to the train station.

Sorano looked at Seishiro, her gray eyes neutral, her countenance blank. Five seconds passed before she pointed towards the seatbelt that the punk had neglected to clip on.

"Your seatbelt, Yamamura-chan. You understand how to put it on, yes? Or would you like to be taught how to?"

They may be Hunters, but they were still humans. And getting tagged by traffic cops would certainly be a hell of a way to make an impression on their newest advisor.

Orihara Keiji

Keiji let out an exasperated sigh as Isana chastised him for an apparent lack of confidence in the battle. He swore that girl was born in the wrong era. She would probably have fit in better as a samurai or something. "Geez, haven't you read this little book called The Art of War," he retorted. "Know thy enemy, know thyself... We definitely don't know our enemy yet and charging in blindly is just going to get us killed." He shook his head. Arguing with her was usually pointless. She was pretty set in her ways, and he'd just have to do his best to get the information to his companions before she charged headlong into a trap.

Shuro was the next to vent her frustrations. Apparently she she preferred train rides in solitude. But, he just let out a small chuckle and turned to the new guys. "She's rough around the edges, but she's totally dependable in a fight. Just give her some time to warm up to you. I'll show you around if you need help finding anything." He offered a hand first to Soga, and then to Jack. "Welcome to Ayabukuro. Let's go fight some youkai." He flashed them a grin and then headed off towards the train station. He wasn't worried about catching up with Shuro or Isana. He knew his way around and didn't care if they ended up in a separate car.

Kazama Ushio

Kazama took his own car to meet up with the hunters at the forest. However, he stopped along the way to make a call to Hunter HQ...

"Yes, this is Kazama... Well, they certainly don't seem too nervous about it. Just another job to them. But I'm here if it turns out to be more than we expected... You know my philosophy. Trial by fire. If they can't handle something like this, then they're not cut out to be hunters... No, we haven't discerned the identity of the other bakekonchu yet, but honestly I'm not worried about them. This Kumogori, though. Just who is he that someone like Gin would follow? That's what I'm more worried about... Ah, the train should be arriving soon. Gotta go."

It was good that HQ was concerned about the wellbeing of their young hunters. However, he didn't believe this mission was beyond them. He'd dealt with worse at their age.

Seishiro merely stared back at Sorano as she eyed him, and then gestured to his seatbelt. He sighed, reaching over and clicking it on. He wasn't used to city driving, and genuinely forgot about it. He didn't like being bossed around, but he also genuinely didn't want to be late. Despite her veneer of diligence, she was starting to give him the impression that she would be vindictive if he didn't bow to her orders. That would be time-consuming. In any case, if they got into a crash, he would probably be the only one to live out of the three of them.

"Clock's ticking," he grumbled, "Goddamn youkai are gonna already be dead by the time we get there."

"And thus spoke Sun Tzu: 'A victorious general wins first and then goes to war. A failed one goes to war first and then seeks to win'," Isana quoted in a dignified tone —which made her sound like some sort of modern-day Takeda Shingen— to none other than Keiji while the group that formed around Shuro and herself waited for the train to arrive at the station.

"If you step on a battlefield with a mindset that you might face defeat, your enemies will have won half of the battle," she added a moment later.

While the train didn't have the convenience of letting them get as near to the forest as possible, it was also faster than going by car and, barring any unforeseen disasters, always on time.

It was no surprise that Isana would be the first to disembark and, still with her hands folded within her sleeves, begin her way to the forest. Determination was evident in each of her steps as she made her way to the quite literal youkai hive.

"Thank you for your consideration."

With that, Sorano twisted the ignition key and drove off, the seats rumbling alongside the engine as the radio chattered on softly about traffic news and meteorology reports. Clear skies were nice, and there were no real problems in traffic to worry about, beyond the usual afternoon congestion, which was easy enough to avoid by taking to the side streets. The drive was quiet beyond the radio chatter, and they progressed at a fast, if legal, speed, soon arriving at the allocated parking lot for entering this particular forest. Few cars were present, and the bespectacled Hunter backed in with one smooth turn of the steering wheel. Sorano was certainly a competent, if perhaps excessively vigilant , driver, constantly checking all three mirrors as she drove, even when it was clear at a glance that there were no other vehicles on the road.

She stepped out soon after, waiting for the others to exit as well.

The train probably arrived at the stop faster, but the car stopped close enough to the entrance of the forest that the difference was more or less negligible. Grabbing a couple packages from the back of the Jeep, Sorano secured them to her uniform, before locking the vehicle and marching off.

Her schedule for eating her almond-cashew mix was off, but it was basically trail mix anyways, perfectly fine for eating while on a hike towards the monsters' den.

Soga Emishro

The woodland environment created a familiar, if somewhat foreboding green wall of plant life, being the first separation from Ayabukuro and the cold mountain wilderness beyond. Here in the calm stillness all knowledge of the city might have just been an energetic dream, broken at last by the crisp air, and lingering quiet. The constant chatter and sounds of city life that Emishro had already began to zone out faded with every step their small party took from the train station. Crossing patches of cultivated grass swards, beneath park trimmed trees, they entered into the rugged forest proper beyond. Across a small parking lot, they rendezvoused with the rest of their Club by Sorano’s jeep, parked on the edge of a tourist path, seemingly abandoned at that early evening hour leaving the seven them alone. Except for Sensei-Kazama, though Emishro could not see him, and could not say whether their Sensei would be joining them directly or watching quietly from the sidelines.

An eagerness hung over them, anyone could sense it, and Emishro was not about to wait a second more. Giving the parking lot one last look over to ensure their continued privacy Emishro slipped his spectacles off his nose, folding each delicate arm in turn before slipping the glasses into his jacket pocket. The effect was immediate. Emishro’s heart rate slowed, each beat sounding louder and louder in his enhanced hearing, until it grew and intermingled with seven heartbeats of his surrounding clubmates. His vision sharpened, every detail becoming obvious and forging a world whose brilliance made his previous magically void experience seem dull by comparison. Blood flowed through his limbs, energizing them until Emishro flexed his fingers, feeling a new strength there, like he could crush anything with a pincer grip. He waited, allowing the brief high to wash away as his body adjusted. Not for the first time his internal subjective mind wondered why it ever let his objective consciousness smother this feeling of power behind the limiter. He could take the glasses even now, smash them to dust and be free of that lifeless, boring world he’d left behind!

Emishro took control at once, staying his wayward hand, not allowing the euphoria to dictate his actions. He recalled the first lessons his mother had given him, to be in command, always at the wheel and in perfect harmony with his senses. He took a deep breath, relaxing his pent-up muscles which longed to spring into action and run, or climb, or do something. He looked to the others, seeing them all in various states of anticipation, he could practically smell the excitement off some of them, though it was weak compared to the heavy aroma of maple from the nearby trees.

“Should we…?” Emishro frowned, without Kazama-Sensei they did not have a leader. Or at least not one he knew of. No one to step up and take command, to give orders and instructions. He knew how to fight, and how to sneak and act, but the actual hunting part was new territory. He glanced from one Hunter to the next, wondering which one would take charge, and whether the other veterans would adhere. Somehow, he couldn’t image Yayoi or Isana follow each other’s orders willingly. Jack was new, like himself and ruled out. His gaze went to Seishiro and Sorano. Both seemed likely to him, though he would have to get to know them better to be certain. He stopped at Shuro, she had been a reluctant leader already, allowing the rookies to accompany her, showing the way to the train. Reluctant though and more of a loner, Emishro and Keiji had moved to a different part of the train car to give her space. Keiji perhaps? The two of them had been engrossed in conversation on the ride, and already Emishro quite liked the younger hunter. He was smart, and easy to talk to and ever since he shook Emishro’s hand back at the club room the two had been getting along rather well.

Uncertain, but curious Emishro waited. Maybe they already had a chosen leader, or maybe everyone acted individually of one another. He would have to wait and see.

“Wow, now ain’t that poetic. You memorize that yourself, nerd?” Shuro cared naught of the bluntness aimed at Isana. After all, if she was going to open herself so easily to insult, she should have expected such an outcome anyway. Regardless, the remainder of the train ride towards the forest was relatively smooth. No one went out of their way to bother her and that was the way Shuro liked it. She almost dozed off into a complete nap but managed to keep one eye open in case she missed their stop. It was better than doing so and listening to one of Isana’s lectures.

By choice or chance, all the Hunters for the most part were gathered up, finding each other rather easily in the forest. Sorano’s group looked as lively as ever, though to be fair, their own wasn’t looking too excited either. Shuro eyed up the darkened vastness just beyond the trees, knowing full well that the only thing keeping her interest on the matter at hand was the act of hunting, to commit to what their blood was meant to do. Even as she held these thoughts, she could see Soga was being swept away by similar sensations, to a degree.

She caught his gaze as he posed his half-given question, looking about at the gathered Hunters before them. “Should we? Of course we should; we’re Hunters. So we hunt.” Despite her tone, Shuro flashed the boy a toothy grin, spinning around a blackened keychain around her ring finger idly. “Sure, we could wait for Sensei to give us the go ahead. But you guys think he’s the type to hold our hands? Or the type to throw us in the middle of the woods at night and have at it. Don’t know about you, but I think it’s the latter.”

Still, she could see his concerns. Different strokes for different folks, and all that. So with a sigh, Shuro turned right back to the two “studious” types, same as before. “Alright Isana, Sorano. Before you get on my ass about it, again, let’s decide here and now before anything stupid happens. We doing group work or off on our own?” It was more for her own benefit than the others, Shuro very much wanting to avoid being yelled at by either of them for being a lone wolf with no regard for others. Again.
