This thread is not for memes (do not post them)

As for my least favorite, it'd have to be Kalos. The region is neat and the games have cool features like megas, but honestly the story and gameplay was a snooze fest and I didn't really have a challenge beating any part of it.

Haven't gotten around to X & Y yet as I never invested in a 3DS. Feel like I ought to since its becoming easier to do so now.

Let the record show that for whatever faults Sword and Shield have, the music isn't one of them.

This slaps every fucking time.

Yeah, now might be the best time. Although if you don't want the 3D effects that come with a 3DS, you can just invest in a 2DS. They should be cheaper than a 3DS but still able to do anything a 3DS can.

Yeah, the music is one of the few things I like from Sword and Shield, honestly. The rest has largely been disappointment, but then again, I was already somewhat disappointed before the games were even released.

Sun and Moon had an amazingly awesome elite four track, but am I right that sword and shield doesn't have an elite four?

Mild progression spoilers.

Yes and no? There's no Elite Four + Champion but in keeping with the theme of the region, getting all 8 badges doesn't mean you get to challenge the Champion, you have to qualify by winning a semifinal tournament wherein you face your rivals one last time and then an actual finals tournament against three gym leaders who now are fighting with their actual teams and not just their weak gym challenge teams. THEN you face the Champion.

So while there is no Elite Four, after you get all 8 badges you have to face six trainers/Gym Leaders that may as well be an Elite Four before facing the Champion. Basically, Sword and Shield is the tournament arc of Pokemon.

It even has an appropriately 'epic final trainer battle' theme

The tournament thing is inspired by the anime, which is kind of neat honestly.

If only the games also had all the pokemon like the anime and the reboot

That music really takes me back to dreamcast/playstation-era adventure games for some reason.

I borrowed Shield from a friend. It was a cute game! But I don't think it was worth $60, and I'm glad I didn't pay for it. it seemed kinda lacking for a switch game.

Online trading is the freaking worst though. It's so hard to trade with a friend directly. The game is still decent and feel good, but trading is one of the worst features and really takes away from the game's overall values. I want a galarian ponyta :/

Been doing some gen 8 random battles on showdown and I honestly don't find dynamax an enjoyable experience. Maybe they're still trying to work out all the kinks when it comes to simulating the new generation, but megas and z-moves were much more fun to use. Being obliterated by a dynamax pokemon in a single hit with them either getting a stat boost or you getting stat debuffs is honestly not fun to play with. Yeah, it lasts three turns, but by the end of it you've probably lost a chunk of your team and have to fight against a pokemon with several boosts.

Can I just say that Galar being based on Scotland (I think) makes me dissapointed with how things turned out, and the third legendary looked like the pokemon equivalent to Lovecraft?

@Majoras End UK in general, not just Scotland. Maybe it's because I'm a Brit myself but I'm curious as to how the location specifically affected your experience? (Haven't played the game myself but watching stream)

Good to know. And I meant like I actually wanted to play it, see how they did with the new region (irish decent here.), but like I said, or meant to say, I'm a bit unmotivated with all the hate the game's getting.

If it's any consolation, outside of the localization the setting doesn't really do a lot to invoke that UK feel apart from the obvious like gyms being football stadiums and the last location being Pokemon London in the same way Lumiose was Pokemon Paris and Castelia was Pokemon Manhattan.

Also the game isn't even bad

Most of the complaints I see on youtube and all are kinda...stupid. It's like people expected gen 8 to be revolutionary, but got hissy when they didn't get their open world exploration and all. To me? It seem like just another pokemon game, following the formula, ya know? Though I do think if they worked on the B/W remake that people wanted so much on the side, that they could have spent more time polishing up SwSh. Unless it's the other way around. If that's the case, then wow.

And in my opinion, cutting off half the pokedex isn't a problem. If people really have that much time to catch over a thousand pokemon, kudos to them. But for me, it just gives more breathing room to catch what I can.

Then again, I never catch 'em all to begin with. :P

Can't really say much with the story since I haven't watched it through. But...yeah, they could've made a better team than Team Yell, or atleast made them more interesting, or give them a better name. :/ (and im not just saying that since I favor Team Aqua more.)

The concept for the rival is good, being related to the champion, but Hop seems a bit annoying over time.

Graphics are great, who cares about how the trees look. Glad customization is back too.

I reinstate the fact that the third legend is on Lovecraft levels of WTF.

Aaaand who gives a rattata's tail that GameFreak lied? They probably did that so that people will stop harassing them for a while. The attacking and defending people are already close combating each other to death as is.

Mini review/rant over. I just feel sorta neutral about this, overall.

Team Yell makes sense in context - they're not really evil they're just hooligans/megafans of one of your rivals. The antagonist thing in this game is the worst part of the already thin story because it quite literally comes out of nowhere and is introduced/wrapped up in about twenty minutes.

BUT on the topic of rivals - that's one aspect of the narrative that I would say is done well. Or well enough for a Pokemon game. Hop is annoying, yes, but he and your other two rivals have their own arcs to go through and they mostly work. Hop has to learn to stop living in the shadow of his brother, Bede has his thing, Marnie has hers, and while Hop never quite escapes the 'annoying friendly rival' thing that has been a staple of Pokemon far longer than this weird 'mean asshole rival' that people are nostalgic for he DOES at least grow beyond 'MY BROTHER IS THE BEST SO I'M ALSO AWESOME BECAUSE MY BROTHERRRRRRR'.

In short: the main narrative is weak but the side narrative with the three rivals is good.

This. I approve of this.

Though now i'm curious as to which rival is everyone's favorite. I'm probably gonna be stuck with Wally as my favorite. (Gen 3 AND remake. Yes im slightly playing favoritism since I mostly grew up with Hoenn, but I never really got to play gen 4 and 5 , and 6-7 didn't really stick with me much so I wouldn't know.)

Well, SWSH was already in development before Let's Go, so we're talking 2016-2017.
