How did you even manage to survive the three day down time? A kid on my block went outside for the first time as it happened and he exploded.

Pretty sure from memory I was either playing No Man's Sky, Borderlands 3 if that was out then, or just working. Lol

So, with the Game Awards tomorrow and the year quickly coming to a close I figure now's a good a time as any for everyone's favorite topic.

Hey, guys, what is your Game of the Year for 2019? If it's too hard to pick one, feel free to make a list. Or make a list anyway. What games from 2019 are the ones you look back on the most fondly?

Honestly? I don't think so. RE4, for better or worse (in the fandom, anyway, I've heard many a fan who dislike RE4), was a monumentally influential game both for the RE series and games at the time, and its legacy is such that it is constantly ported to the point where RE4 is pretty much on any system out there and for relatively cheap. Unlike the PS1 games which were products of their time, RE4 is still fairly modern so what's there to remake in it, really? If anything I'd assume next on the list for remake is Code Veronica.

It'd be great if the best Resident Evil game got a remake proper, but then they would ruin it by making a bad actress try to replicate Alyson Court just like RE2, and I'm still happy with the remaster I got for the 360. I'd love if they just ported that to the PC, ngl.

My top contenders per my personal taste would be The Outer Worlds, Dead or Alive 6, and Trails of Cold Steel II, though I would be the first to admit I've missed a lot of indie games.

There's been plenty of discourse and push for CODE Veronica to be the next remake, even talk about them remaking the RE1 remake with the controls from RE2 remake (how many times can I say remake?). Personally, if they go ahead with it and once it's done then I think that should be the end of any more remakes from them so they can move on to the hypothetical RE8. That being said, as much as I don't want them to do it because it's not really necessary, I guarantee you that an RE4 remake is on the cards at some point. The funny thing about RE4 though is that it's one of those unique once-in-a-generation game changers that you can't exactly emulate or recreate, even though plenty have tried (and failed). Should it be remade? No. Will it be remade? Most definitely.

Speaking of that CVX remaster, if you're in the EU (or PAL regions in general) then avoid the PS4 release of the CVX remaster. It runs at 50hz, just like the original PS2 release rather than at the 60hz you get in the NTSC version. Basically, the game runs far slower, feels like your character is running through treacle and makes the cannon puzzle way more trouble than it needs to be.

On the topic of Alyson Court, you're absolutely bang on. It's a real shame they didn't bring her back for the RE2 remake, but Stephanie Panisello did a decent enough job.

The Outer Worlds was decent, still have yet to finish it but so far it's been far better than any of Bethesda's recent offerings. I haven't played much this year, but if I had to say? Fire Emblem: Three Houses would probably be my Game of the Year. Borderlands 3 was better than I was expecting, and I'm disappointed that Ace Combat 7 didn't even get a nomination for Best VR Game - even though to be fair there's only like what, three VR missions in the game?

Resident Evil 6's biggest problem was it was too ambitious. It took the formula of 5 and expanded upon it and tried to give three fully-realized stories representing three different moods/eras. Unfortunately, it just ended up being a mismanaged, sloppy, and glitch-ridden conceptualization. I like Resident Evil 6, but its a hot mess that is only saved from mediocrity by cooperative play.

Purists never really understood why 6 makes the most sense and you put it down aptly--Resident Evil is a Japanese director misunderstanding cheesy [American] low-budget action movies and grindhouse horror beats. It gives it that folksy "Resident Evil" charm.

The tricky thing about that game is that as long as you don't view it as an RE game but as fun, stupid Japanese shit with an action movie narrative then you'll have a blast with it (even if all the other RE games are fun, stupid Japanese shit too). Definitely more enjoyable as a co-op experience though, namely because the AI isn't the best from my own experience. For the past decade or so, RE has been in something of an identity crisis - does it want to be action, or horror? Or both? RE6 is just a fun, silly adventure. I always viewed RE6 as the embodiment of something designed by committee rather than a singular vision. Like you said it was far too ambitious. RE works best when it's small scale and self-contained, like say in a spooky mansion in the woods.

Now if you really wanted to play a bad RE game, look at Survivor or Umbrella Corps.

Fucking Umbrella Corps.

resident evil 2 and modern warfare are games that i look back upon very fondly when i think of 2019 (out of ones that i've played that were relesed this year)

i felt that resident evil 2 remake was done very, very well and brought the series to the campy ass horror that it's supposed to be. everything about the game was absolutely gorgeous and the presence of mr. x did a good job at scaring the shit out of me.

modern warfare, on the other hand, despite its issues, is a very, very fun game and a welcome return to classic call of duty. it is also the second best campaign i've ever played in an FPS (the first being titanfall 2), and i've put more time into it than i would like to admit.

I'm sad to say that the only 2019 game I played this year was Borderlands 3, and I don't really feel like that counts. I'm just a few hours in and while I'd like to finish it, final fantasy 14 keeps stealing my attention away. Just got to post Stormblood.

The game I look back on with the most fondness is probably Celeste. Yes, it's a 2018 game, but I put off getting it because I thought it would just be another Meatboy clone. Only to get it over a steam sale and realize it was so much more. I still have to get all the strawberries and beat about half of the challenge levels, but that game rekindled my love for the ultra hard platformer.

And the music was amazing, as I'm sure all of you are likely aware. I enjoy all the music, but this is probably my favorite track in the game.

You already know my thoughts on Ace Combat 7. It really needed to get at least one nomination, maybe for VR or best music. Game of the Year though? I dunno, hard to say. I want to say Fire Emblem: Three Houses, I enjoyed that a lot. Put well over a hundred hours into it. RE2 remake is up there though, and I wanted to like Astral Chain more but for some reason that game kept giving me headaches.

Borderlands 3 gets an honourable mention because it was far better than I was expecting it to be, and it was plenty of fun.

The Division 2...eh, I just couldn't get into that game at all. I really tried, but it just didn't really hook me like the first game did.

Also, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 was a surprise. Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

I will agree with you on the RE2 remake, and I'm glad they didn't make it an exact copy of the original game but instead added new things, gave it a twist on the original. I'm still expecting them to make some sort of Director's Cut. What are your thoughts on RE3 remake? Looking forward to it?

Lot of disconnects in matchmaking and the big audio issue, yeah. Some framerate issues when said audio issues come up, too.

Is that like Skyrim modding except at the end of it Reach is actually fun to play so you don't just uninstall it after an hour

I mean like downloading mods for Skyrim which can take hours and then you play Skyrim for an hour with the mods and it's still Skyrim so you uninstall.

I know nothing about game modes and maps for Reach so I was just wondering if the process is similar except at the end of it Reach is fun so you actually play it.

I actually play Skyrim with Mods every few months, but IDK I got a lot of nostalgia with TES.

I try to play Skyrim with mods more often than I care to admit. I recently bought Skyrim for like the hundredth time on the Switch a few weeks ago and I genuinely found myself playing more of that than I thought so maybe I just wanted to play it vanilla. Something about the winter just makes that game feel cozy.

I picked up the Mooncrash DLC for Prey.

Prey is a great game that I wish more people played.
