At a young age, Lucky was abandoned at a gas station by Avalon Hughes, a woman of wealth, though all he can remember is her face, her first name, and the memories. This moment in his life would end up changing how he perceived the world and people, and how he would behave from this point on. After joining an orphanage with questionable practices, he was adopted by a seemingly average family. A good family. At least to the eyes of the public.
Their flaw? They're severely "religious" and yet, burdened with the guilt of their sins. The man of the house, Tobias Cross, continuously commits adultery. The woman of the house, Blake Lively-Cross, is an alcoholic and never fails to take out her misery on her adopted children, since her sin is being barren. His little sister, Tallulah Cross, is a scared little girl, brainwashed so easily, becoming the perfect, obedient, and complacent daughter to the "good" Samaritans that are their parents. To him, Lula's just a bitch that picked up the behavior of their mother.
It's an overall unpleasant living situation.

A few things Lucky used as a form of escapism were playing card games, teaching himself coding, stealing his mother's meds, breaking things with his baseball bat, and failing to abide to the strict rules and regulations of his parents and of society. He did try, when they made him join the mathletes and chess club in grade school, but that was short lived when he was disqualified for disorderly conduct and harrassment. Afterwards, they tried to get him into a competitive sport, baseball, in hopes that would help with his pent up anger. That led to them having to take further disciplinary action in raising him.
Punishing his little sister was easy for them, like locking her in the basement without supper, because she was afraid of the dark, but for him, violence and verbal abuse was the only method they believed could get through to him. His mother would continuously say he was abandoned for a reason and that he would never be worth loving unless he submitted, while his father went straight to getting physical. Though, always avoiding the face. Of course, none of that worked and he became a boy in a bubble, where the pain normalized. Pain was something he started to like, due to how it made them feel. They were never satisfied. No matter how hard they tried to get their point across.
Eventually, his parents just gave up on him, putting all their energy in Lula, which in return caused his sister to despise him. Now, he's seen as the family ghost. They can't necessarily give him up because Lucky has told them he would take them to court, having gathered enough evidence over the years to ruin them (it's with one of his friends). While the evidence is not a bluff, taking them to court is, because he doesn't want his sister to be taken by child services. Regardless, they believe him, and that's what matters.
While they do provide him a place to stay and food to eat, they don't treat him like he's part of the family or even acknowledge when he's home. All their pictures online completely erase him, as if they only have one child. And he's perfectly fine with that. He doesn't need a presence on the web. Anyways, because he has pride, he's gotten a part time job as a cook's assistant for a local diner and doesn't depend on them for anything. Occasionally, he sleeps over his friends' houses when he needs to get away. Even without the job, he knows how to get money if he needs to. If he was being honest with himself, the only place that feels like home is his school and that's not saying much... it's only a matter of time until he'll turn eighteen and be free as a bird, forgetting his past ever existed.
