Chapter 0

Prelude

It's always calm before a storm. Unbeknownst to most, disaster will strike soon. This will be an optional slice of life interaction period, to those that want to engage in some pre-disaster interactions feel free to run some collabs with people. You don't have to participate, this is mostly just to pad out some time for those that still haven't made their sheets but give something to the players that are waiting. If you wanna wait for the big event TM that is perfectly fine. Your social collabs can include time periods from the first week prior to friday, or the week prior with the closing of summer break. Friday the 13th at 12:15 is the cut off point to where the main event will happen.
Solo posts can generally be about whatever too, recommended to situate yourself near that event time, especially to those not at the school. If you also want some solo posts with npc's or want npcs in your collab feel free to hit me up. Keep in mind you are allowed to make your own minor npc's provided they are just ordinary people.

For collabs I recommend using this
pad.riseup.net
and contacting whoever you wish to collab with. You may also join in other collabs if you feel like you'd want your character there or to show up, just feel free to communicate among yourselves n all that. Make your posts in the pad and someone will be in charge of posting the whole thing here.
Any questions feel free to pm me, especially to characters who aren't in the school and need direction.
Chapter one will start next monday in real time to close off this interaction period, that should give enough time for those to finish their characters and get out your social interactions; however delays can happen if there are those that still need time for characters and/or posting. If you feel like you can't get your character up within the week that is fine, but we will be moving on without you. You are still free to join in later of course!

Savannah was, after a fashion, entirely normal. But she didn’t want to tell people that she was afraid of showering today. She was ashamed of it, to be honest, because she had never been a dirty person. Really, it was the opposite, she had always been very clean and tidy, kept good care of her room, did her dishes as soon as she done was them, and she’d even taken her showers on the long side. In excess of twenty minutes. Very thorough.

But she thought of the last time, and all the blood and the panic, and she didn’t want to do it again.

She’d skipped the last couple of days and felt greasy, especially in her hair, and just wrong all over. She’d been using powder shampoo and washing her hair in the sink, but it just wasn’t the same. But today was the first day of school and she was laying in bed and she knew she had to do it. There was no choice. She rolled over in her bed, and there was a half-yip because she’d woken up Simba, who was sleeping on her chest. Which he insisted was merely a tactic to better blend in as the creature which he was disguised as, and he always said that word ‘creature’ with that venomous emphasis. And her train of thought was interrupted when he said, “My name is not Simba. It is Nemeos.”

“Okay, fine, I just want to sleep,” she said. She didn’t sound happy, didn’t sound awake, it was more of a grumble than a statement.

“You’ll have to get up eventually.”

“And what if I just don’t?”

“You’ll atrophy away and I’ll be left without a human host. So, get up. That is an order.”

She sighed. Deeply, heavily. He was right. And besides, if she wasted away she wouldn’t be able to tell her parents that she just slipped and split her head open anymore because they’d know something was wrong. They already did, really, she knew that they looked at her and just saw something wrong. So she sat up.

Her room was exceedingly plain. She kept no paintings, had no trophies, mementos, collectibles, or anything like that. Her parents had tried, in the past, to give her gifts and things to put in there but they didn’t really interest her. All she thought she needed was a bed, a desk with her computer, and the sofa that she laid on for a lot of days reading. The rest could exist outside of her space. This was how she was comfortable. In fact, she didn’t detest any of the things her parents gave her, they merely found other places in the house to occupy where she was quite happy with them.

There was one other thing in her room, though. One poster. It was of Van Gogh’s The Starry Night. She’d always been a little ashamed of liking it so much because it was just a little too pop, but she still felt good when she saw it. In fact, when she saw it she thought her and Vincent might not have been so different. Because there was this window in Savannah’s room, and she spent a lot of time viewing the world from it. The second-floor view wasn’t so bad. She lived deep in the suburbs, buried there in the houses and neat lawns where children played outside a lot like she used to, people waked dogs, ice cream trucks passed by playing that jingle, but today none of that was happening because it was the first day of school and it was cloudy all over which is how she liked it to be. She liked it when it rained, too, and she wished it was snowing already. She had her own secret names for all the people she saw on the street every day.

She took another deep breath and got up just a few seconds before her alarm would ring, because she hated that noise. She turned it off and went right away to the bathroom, Nemeos following shortly behind. He said, “You know, I can’t imagine being afraid of water. It’s just water.”

“It’s less the water and more the memories. Seems like I always think about things in the shower.”

He didn’t say anything to that. He just sat in the corner of the bathroom, curled up and she thought it was funny because for all his insistence that he wasn’t a dog he acted just like one and wouldn’t stop following her. Reminded her of the clingy old pug she had that would whine if you locked him out of the bathroom.

The bathroom was quiet and clean, the porcelain and tile polished, the light bright and white. It felt like a horrible place to her then, a horrible horrible place. She undressed and turned the shower on hot and her head felt dizzy just hearing the rush of the water and seeing the first wisps of hot steam, and it was so inviting and nice but she just felt all wrong for it. But then again, if she couldn’t do this what could she do?

She stepped in and she was breathing fast. She went through the motions quickly, feeling like she was floating away; shampoo, then condition, and soap, then she turned it off and left and grabbed a towel and started frantically drying herself. Very quickly. She was breathing fast. She almost didn’t know what she was doing anymore because her vision was spotty and she was going to fall over, so instead she just collapsed against the wall and let herself sit down and she tried to focus on her breath just like she read online. One two three four five. There. One two three four five. Nemeos was looking up from the corner, and he came over and sat against her, but didn’t say anything and she wondered if a spirit just wasn’t equipped for such a pointless personal and human struggle.

This was going to be a normal thing now, she supposed. She was having panic attacks in the shower and had absolutely no idea why. They weren’t her first, but this was the first time they’d been reoccurring so regularly.

She sat there for maybe twenty minutes just trying to breath before she knew that she had to get up because she’d timed getting up early, just in case this had happened, but soon her parents would be stirring and she’d have to get ready for school. So, she stood up and still felt like she was floating in nothing. She walked back to her room and put on the clothes she had set aside for today. And then she looked at her poster before going downstairs and getting a bowl of cereal.

Her parents would get up later and wish her a good first day, and she’d just nod.

"A-are you sure?"

The sharp teeth on the small doll perched on her shoulder made her flinch for a moment, as it grinned widely.

"Cmon, little girl. You want to improve yourself, don't you? Be braver?" A small hand reached out to her cheeks squeezing hard enough to sting a little, her eyes following those small razor sharp teeth as the doll inched its face closer to hers. "Do it. Do it or I will devour you myself."

Fran gulped, and started walking out of her home, wearing a much less conservative outfit than her usual. It was just a simple dress under a short long sleeved jacket, but it was not the usual baggy stuffy clothing she wore. It was very much a much less restrained look, but it was setting off all sorts of alarms in Fran's head. What if she wasn't cute enough to pull this off? Won't she just look ridiculous? Would people just stare at her rather unglamorous hair? The class president had a much glossier hair which-

A sharp pain in her cheeks as the doll pulled harder.

"Oi... Let's go already. Or I'll tear you off piece by piece until you move."

Her breath caught in her throat, as she moved jerkily, finally getting out of her home's boundaries. Trying to be less shy wasn't an easy journey, but at least she had taken her first steps.

The Foxhole | Monday | 8:00 AM

Mornings in the Foxhole were always different from the rest of the day.

Ravenna hummed softly to herself, the smell of hot coffee wafting through the establishment even in the earliest hours of the cafe's opening. In the afternoon, the little shop was already in the swing of things, and if she were completely honest, typically had more teens than other age groups. The woman didn't mind, of course, but there was something pleasant about the mornings, where the only people around were the regulars that came in a set schedule. The shop would be bustling later, but in the morning, it was a quiet domain. Peaceful, maybe.

That was probably why she'd seen familiar faces coming by more often than not, if she were honest. There had been unrest in the city as of late, a stark uptick in crime coming in response to paranoia, terrorism, and people that simply...vanished. That, added to the sudden groups of religious extremists and theorists, had probably been enough for anyone to seek out the comfort of routine. Better than routine, even, considering the decided lack of any attempts to invade the Foxhole, as far as the public was aware.

Ravenna couldn't really take credit for that though. Not with Rust being Rust.

"Hmmm, Ron will want a scone with extra jam, and Laura will want her bagel untoasted..." Those two were like clockwork. Every morning at the same time, the same order. After a while, the barista had managed to get the timing for having their orders ready as soon as they walked through the door. "Must be a fulfilling routine..."

Speaking of which, the school year was starting up again, wasn't it? That would mean a lot of returning business after the lengthy summer holidays, wouldn't it? She hummed to herself ever the more as she thought of how productive the mornings were bound to become.

There was a jingle at the door, the sign of a customer. A familiar brown haired man in a tank top and sweat pants had arrived, right on schedule. He took his usual seat at the bar, smiling with a wave toward the barista. "Morning Rav, I'll have my usual." The gym teacher leaned back in his stool, with one hand idly moving through his own messy brown hair. He had a bit of stubble yet to be shaved, and his eyes showed hints of improper sleep. Typical from his summer habits of a night owl.

On schedule, as always... if a little more unkempt than usual. Ravenna flashed a smile at John as she removed a portion of said usual from the toaster oven.

"Morning, Digiorno. Coming back to being diurnal?" A cup of fresh coffee was poured and set in its usual place, the light teasing note in Ravenna's voice impossible to miss even while she busied herself with plating the rest of the gym teacher's breakfast.

He was never able to avoid a smile hearing that stupid nickname, with an exaggerated sigh and eye roll that followed like a routine. "I swear if you didn't have this cafe I would have abandoned mornings altogether." He humored, taking a sip of his coffee. "I don't know how you can get yourself every morning for this."

"Could be plenty of reasons," Ravenna started. Plates and utensils were set with a sense of familiarity that came with years of practice, the sound minimal despite the movement. "Like maybe I look forward to seeing your cute face in the morning?"

A laugh fell upon the mildly tan teacher, his cheeks lightly flushed. "Always so forward Rav. You're lucky you don't have any other customers at the moment."

"My, my, saying I'm lucky to be spending a morning alone with you? And you call me forward." The barista chuckled, a soft melodic sound that didn't disturb the peace of the cafe. "So, what have you been doing all summer, John? Thinking of new ways to make sure your kids are tired and hungry after class?"

"If I was that dedicated I should have went for a drill sergeant." He took another sip of his coffee after a quick chuckle. "What about you? How has your summer been?"

"Hmm, nothing too different. I missed a few regulars, I guess." Ravenna claimed, the easy smile still lingering on her lips as she returned to the task of prepping for the next regulars that would inevitably come through the door. "Luckily, it looks like crime doesn't like my little shop."

She smiled at her first customer of the day, even as she heard some semblance of a scoff resound in her head. Tyet had never been much for the small talk.

"But it is less lonely in the mornings with all the Lakewood High regulars on their way back. I guess I should welcome you home."

"Well I missed you too Rav." He said with a smile as he downed the rest of his morning brew. "Maybe we could catch a movie sometime. You free friday night?"

"Only with a coupon," Ravenna teased in response. "But I can make an exception just for you. Friday night sounds lovely."

"Alright, I'll pick you up at 8." He finished his morning fix, and already started to fish in his pockets for his wallets. "That work for you?" He'd pay his usual bill with a 20% tip, teacher's salaries be damned.

""More than enough, Digiorno."

The teacher gave a smirk at her once last time before waving his hand as he left the store.

Scarlet Leone

"I feel like I've been here before."

Scarlet's week had been pretty sub-par, honestly. To start off, on Monday she had been late for school and ended up deciding to skip her first class entirely because of it, spending the time sneaking around the school to figure out where things were, making a mental map of all the water fountains and general areas. Other than that, it was a normal day for a seemingly normal student, albeit one who never talked to anyone and sat in an obscure hallway to eat her lunch.

Wednesday she forgot her lunch and had to actually eat the garbage the school called a lunch. Not horrifying, but not very good either. She ate the little she already knew she'd like from what she was given and threw the rest away, spending the rest of the time exploring the school some more instead of sitting alone in the cafeteria.

And now on Friday it seemed that someone had reached into her mind and brought out her worst fears. She stood in shock in the cafeteria as an arthropod-like creature crawled along the window. After the wall broke and the crowd began swarming around, she found herself stuck between the creatures and the horde of teenagers behind her. Her eyes closed and she took a deep breath, calming herself as much as she could. She opened them to see the lunch lady get impaled by one of the monsters. Not the worst thing she'd ever seen, but it was still a different beast to see it happen in person rather than on a video, and she nearly passed out despite her best efforts.

As she faded in and out of consciousness, the world around Scarlet seemed to drip into nothingness around her to be replaced with a small padded room, about 15 cubic feet in size. The smell of blood permeated the area and as she looked around, she found that the ceiling was made of glass, showing stars above it. There was a small knife on the ground in front of her.

Mortal. I have a offer for you. A cold, almost metallic voice echoed through Scarlet's mind.

"Mortal? Great, so not only do monsters exist, but immortals too? What is this, a manga? Where am I, anyway?"

You are in your mind, though an area that is in my control.

"And... who are you?"

I am known as Kokou.

"And your offer is...?"

Form a pact with me, and I will grant you my power so that you may survive.

"A pact?"

In return for my power, you will give me your spiritual energy.

"I have that?"

Yes.

"Interesting. So you'd be able to slaughter those damn bugs?"

With my power, it should be a simple matter for you.

"Heh. Alright, where do I sign?"

Simply swallow the knife before you and our contract will be complete.

"... That's weird. You're weird."

I grow tired of using your human language. Hurry and form the contract, or don't and die to those creatures.

"Tch. Alright. Guess maybe dying is better than definitely dying."

With that, she reached down to grab the knife, about six inches long in total, lifted her head straight up and dropped the blade into her mouth. As it cut its way through her tongue and mouth, the pain and blood choked her, forcing her awake as the room faded around her like fog. As the pain faded the world returned to the cafeteria she was in.

"Shit that hurt." She glared across at one of the creatures that had the lunch lady impaled on its tail. "Okay, how do we do this?"

Instead of a response, Kokou forced her instincts to cry out, allowing her to know how to channel it. She followed them and red markings formed over her body and a scythe formed in her hand. "Whoa! That's awesome!" Scarlet said as she spun the scythe around between her hands. She jumped from foot to foot and noticed that she was moving faster than she intended to. After a few seconds of mental adjustment, she charged the nearest monster, the one that killed the lunch lady. With its tail occupied, it was forced to shoot its tongue at Scarlet, who was able to use her increased speed to knock it out of the way with the side of her scythe. Unfortunately, when she got to the creature she was unable to slow down correctly, her reaction time being off-sync with her speed, and she jumped well over the creature, smashing into a wall behind it.

"Owww..." she said as she stood up and turned around in time to see the creature about to fire its tongue at her again.

Watch out. Use your shield.

"Shield?"

Once again, Kokou showed Scarlet how to use its power through her instincts, forming a red dome of small hexagons in front of her that blocked the creature's second attempt to impale her with its tongue. "Whoa, shit! That was close!" Scarlet said when the shield faded after about a second. This time she wasn't going to make the same mistake. She rushed the creature at a slower speed, this time pausing before she got to where she wanted to get to in order to actually stop there, and then jumped onto the creature's back.

"Heh, this is awesome!" she said as she lowered her scythe under the creature and pulled it upwards, slicing its head off. Scarlet looked around the room. There seemed to be four other monsters in the area as well, but many of the students had dispersed, leaving her an exit. As much as she wanted to kill the bug things, she knew better than to risk taking on all four at once. She allowed herself to relax, the red markings on her body disappearing before she slowly backed out of the cafeteria, looking behind her every few steps to make sure not to run into another monstrosity.

"Amber, what's going on?" Thea asked as she was pushed through the halls of the school at a breakneck pace. She'd only come here to interview students, her line of thinking being that perhaps some of the younger residents would have some insights into the strange events occurring. Instead she was currently drifting through dark halls with her assistant, wondering why she could hear screaming from not too far away. "Maybe we should see if someone needs help?"

"That is none of our concern, your safety is my priority." Amber responded, its tone as flat as the floor Thea's wheelchair was skidding across.

"But..."

"I refuse."

Thea was silent for a moment, until she rolled past a man crawling on the floor by the entrance. She pulled the brake on her wheelchair, which at the speed she was going resulted in her being flung from it. She slowly stood to her feet, the impact taking a lot out of her already. Amber watched her peer around the corner. "He's hurt really badly, we need to- GAH!" She screamed as a giant crustacean slammed it's body against the school entrance. Thea pulled out a small notepad with a pen and began shakily scribbling in it. She was mumbling what sounded like a summary of what was happening in front of her, like a verbal stenographer. She was a reporter after all. Amber walked over to her and glanced at her writing.

"You're just writing the word 'gross' over and over." Amber let out a sigh, a motion it had only recently picked up. The human form was so overly complex, it took days just to remember that blinking was necessary. "If it will ease your panicking, I will assist." Amber walked over to the man begging for help, she knelled down to his level and stretched her mouth into what one would assume was meant to me a reassuring smile. "You will be fine, do not struggle." She grabbed the man and put him into a sleeper hold. He quickly lost consciousness.

"How is that helping!?" Thea shouted, having already gotten back in her chair. Amber produced a syringe and stuck the man with it, his wounded leg began to rapidly heal. She then tossed him onto her shoulder. "Are you that paranoid about someone finding out about us?"

"Yes, now let us go."

Alex groaned as he slumped against a cafeteria table, tapping at his nonfunctional phone. He knew it had battery left, so there was no reason for it to not work. Cell towers were probably down because of the storm, but that didn't explain why it wouldn't even turn on.

"That doesn't even make sense," He grumbled as he dropped the device on the table and buried his face in his arms.

'This isn't a natural storm,' The gruff voice of his spirit 'companion' rumbled through his mind ominously, as if sensing his frustration.

Alex lifted his head back up and adjusted his skewed glasses to look around. Nope, no one watching; he'd be free to whisper back at The Ram without looking like a crazy person talking to himself. Small victories.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

'Trouble. Go to that room you use to relieve yourself and make sure you aren't followed.'

"The bathroom? Why?"

'Is my order interrupting the riveting conversation you were having? By all means then, continue.'

Alex merely groaned again. He was sitting alone at the moment, with his last social interaction having been a few shallow comments about the weather and the crappy lunch conditions exchanged with the students a few seats away. That was a solid five minutes ago. Spirits were mean.

He rose from his seat, pocketing his phone before he made his way out of the cafeteria. The bathroom nearby would no doubt be occupied, so Alex detoured to one slightly farther away to meet The Ram's privacy request. When he arrived, Alex pushed the door open and crouched down, peeking under the stalls for any sign of occupancy.

"Okay, we're clear. What's up?" He asked at a normal volume now as he rose back to his feet and paced nervously.

'There will be an attack soon, if there hasn't been one already. This veritable buffet of fresh young souls huddled so tightly together is bound to attract whatever is causing this storm eventually,' The Ram explained in a calm monotone, 'This lockdown is troublesome but not insurmountable. Once you transform you should be able to exit the building without any witnesses.'

"Attack?! Th-this is one of your kind, isn't it? If it's coming here, shouldn't we stay inside? People could get hurt!" Alex found himself on edge every time The Ram made cryptic predictions of spirits popping up and causing mayhem - and it liked to make them a lot - but even the amount of forewarning he'd been given didn't dull the sudden panic he was feeling.

'Precisely why I want to take a proactive approach. We're at a disadvantage if we're fighting in the presence of the cattle; you'll be too busy whining about collateral damage to listen to my direction.' It responded pointedly. Alex reasoned The Ram must be feeling tense; it wasn't usually this insulting to him. Of course, that only worsened his panic as he realized that even the terrifying death ghost living in his head had misgivings about the situation. He felt a little lightheaded, and he couldn't determine if it was shock or hyperventilation causing it. Good thing no one was around to see.

Alex almost had his breathing under control when the muffled sound of shattering glass and screaming echoed through the halls outside. "Wha-what- what was that?!"

'Your cue. You're a predator now, act like it.'

That's right; The Ram was powerful. He was powerful. He had nothing to worry about. Alex shoved a shaky hand down his collar to pull out the ram's head medallion that he kept nestled under his shirt and gripped it in a tightly balled fist. Hyphoid tendrils sprouted from between his fingers, criss-crossing into a grotesque web around his hand. The biomass then expanded into what looked like a reddish slime mold that tingled on his skin as it rapidly spread to engulf Alex's entire body. The Ram always assured him he didn't need to hold his breath for this part, but the simple thought of any of that getting in his mouth was enough to make him gag. The muculent film writhed against his flesh for only a second or two, but he spent the whole time dealing with cold shivers and tight-feeling muscles, and there was always a throbbing soreness behind his eyes. But, it was worth it when his cocoon finally flaked off into dust. He felt good. Energized. Powerful.

Alex had, admittedly, never gotten a good look at himself when he transformed before. The Ram had instructed him to venture out into some isolated corner of the woods and get used to the form before, but Alex was always back to normal before he got home. In the bathroom mirror, the person staring back at him was decidedly not Alex Kozlov. He saw the resemblance behind the dumb costume, sure, but the guy in the mirror was bigger and, more importantly, didn't have a trace of hair dye on him.

'Stop gawking, no one will recognize you.'

"Huh? Uh, yes, my Lord!" Alex meekly yelped before barreling through the bathroom door. The hallway was unoccupied but there were sounds of quickly approaching footsteps; he needed to hurry before the panicking crowd arrived. They were clearly fleeing from something, which means he needed to flank back around to kill it. Assuming he could kill it. A needling flare of impatience shot through his head at the thought, indicating The Ram's displeasure at Alex's hesitation. Never one to disappoint when he could help it, Alex promptly bolted for the nearest exit.

"Amber, where are you going to put him?" Thea asked of her spirit as it carried the unconscious man through the school hall.

"Since you refused to leave him in the supply closet, I plan to place him in a sufficiently large locker."

"That's worse!"

"Nothing but complaints, if you have a better sou-" Amber abruptly stopped talking and careened her gaze towards a girl and a floating spirit. She dropped the man to the floor with a thud. "Who are you?" She asked, her question directed at the spirit.

Thea gasped, wide eyed at the girl. She was hurt badly, this wasn't the time for questions. "Amber, she's bleeding!"

"I can see that." The spirit said, it's face unmoving. "I have no reason to trust them."
