Standing over by the punch bowl was proving to be a pretty decent choice on Ariel's part. With each drink, she felt herself relax. By what she believed to be drink number six, Ariel had a decent sort of buzz going. If the teachers were going to get mad at her for hogging the punch and getting drunk - so be it. She didn't really want to be here anyway. Truth to be told, if it wasn't for her friends, she wouldn't be doing a lot of things right now.

Watching the crowd for Marisol, Shawna, or anyone else she could low-key lean on to pull her through this night, Ariel spotted Sawyer approach the table.

The few interactions that she had had with Sawyer had been friendly, and from what she could tell, he was actually half decent company. Since she had the tendency to ramble when she got tipsy, Ariel figured it was best to find someone to talk to other than herself. Sawyer being so close by was a God send. As luck would have it, here came Julie and Sonny too! Filling yet another cup with punch, Ariel prepared herself to spark a conversation with the familiar faces quickly surrounding her. Taking a sip as she turned around, Ariel had to fight the instinct to spit it right back out in shock.

Did Kavi seriously just attempt to start a chat with her? The audacity.

Tipping her head to the side as she silently thought about how awful his shirt was as she looked him up and down, Ariel began to feel a spark ignite inside of her - something surprising in her state of semi-numbness. What the spark was about, she didn't know quite yet. If she had to guess, she'd say it was about the growing need to slap the piss out of him and walk away. This was the first time that they had spoken face to face since everything had happened and he was asking if she was having fun? The thought made her audibly scoff.

"Fun?" she said in a questioning tone, repeating the word back to him. "If you mean forcing myself to be somewhere I don't want to be while trying to get drunk off of shit punch then yeah. I'd say I'm having fun." Shrugging her shoulders, Ariel took another drink from her cup. "What about you?"

Sawyer grabbed a paper plate and started down the line of food at the table, piling a couple pieces of pizza, a handful of doritos, a couple of Ritz peanut butter crackers, and... 'Are those strawberries? ..fuck YES!' a few strawberries added to his plate and he was off to find a place to stand against a wall and grub on his food while he watched all the drama unfold that he knew would happen tonight.

Once Sawyer found his place, it seemed his brother appeared at his side out of nowhere nearly giving Sawyer a jump-scare and causing him to drop his food. "Fuck, man! Don't do that!!" Gavin eyed him with a look from over the plastic cup he was tipping back, taking a breathe before asking, "Where's your date?" His tone was dripping in with sarcasm, and not the kind Sawyer was in the mood to laugh at at the moment. Sawyer was simply going to ignore his brother when Jack and Kol showed up at Sawyer's side with perfect timing.

"We're right here!" the boys said in complete unison, sharing a look before laughing at themselves. They always seemed to be on the same frequency, it was kind of weird, really.

Jack clapped an arm over Sawyer's shoulder, throwing the poor boy into a coughing fit as he nearly choked on a bite of pizza. "Sorry, man," he muttered to Sawyer before looking over at Gavin. "We gave up our dates to keep him company, tonight." Gavin smirked and lifted his cup to take another sip, stopping just at his lips to mumble, "Not too much company, I hope. That Lockwood brother doesn't swing that way." Gavin chuckled before wandering off into the crowd to find his own date he was attending the dance with tonight.

Kol was currently stuffing his face with pizza as well while eyeing a girl out on the dance floor, Jack shaking his head as he took a big sip from his cup, starting to crunch on his chips and dip. "Thank the gods for Jasper Fray, amirite?" Sawyer turned to glance at Jack's cup, then at his friend before asking, "You serious?"

Jack turned his gaze on Sawyer with a confused look before answering, "Did you expect anything else? What, did you not get a drink?"

Sawyer simply answered his friend's question by offering a better look of his full plate grasped in both of his hands, to which Jack nodded off back towards the table. Sawyer didn't hesitate, he quickly turned and sped off towards the table with the punch bowls lined up to get himself his drink.

April took another sip of the icy cool water as she bobbed her head idly to the (albeit not amazing) music that was playing over the speakers. Inside, she really wanted to get out onto the dance floor with Archer (and eventually Santiago) and just groove to some smooth tunes. She just wanted to relax and enjoy the night, but whoever the school picked for the DJ seemed to have a hard time getting people to properly engage. While yes, people were dancing, the songs that were picked were definitely not great for it.

Well, no better time than the present to dance to some shitty music right?

Apparently not, as just as quick as the idea popped into her head, did Stella and Santiago show up. It was definitely an improvement to an otherwise quiet and calm start to the night.

April’s face lit up as Stella and Santiago walked over, letting out a laugh as Stella complimented her dress. “Thank you so much, you have no idea how much of a pain it was to find! And you...you look absolutely stunning Stella, I love it!” April let out a happy sigh, her warm smile never leaving her face as her eyes looked to Santiago. “And of course, how could I forget my handsome man? April grinned widely before Santiago helped her up and she twirled before him, planting a quick kiss on his lips before sitting down once more next to Archer.

Her eyes slowly sauntered up and down Santiago’s muscular frame, drinking in every inch of his deep, navy blue suit. Damn he looks good tonight… she thought to herself, before snapping out of the little daydream and smiling once again. She couldn’t help but wonder now, that if that was the suit he’d picked for this dance, how the hell was he going to top it for prom?

“Well, before the night is through I would love a dance with both of you...” she motioned to Santiago and Archer as she spoke “...whenever that may occur and whenever the DJ actually puts on some decent music and gets the vibe right.”

She looked to Archer offering a hand out to him “If you’re alright with it, that is. What do ya say?”

When Danielle mentioned that her "date" slash cousin Max had disappeared to be with a certain someone, Kavan couldn't help but shudder as images of him, Ariana, and a wooden bench came flooding back in his mind. Thankfully, these images went away almost as quickly as they had appeared when none other than Jasper Fray made his way over and began to address them both. ”Kavan,” the other guy said as he came to a stop next to Danielle. ”Hows it going man?”

"Jasper, my man," Kavan said just as enthusiastically as he gave Jasper's shoulder a quick clasp. "Everything's going pretty well, I guess. No complaints, really. How about you?" Kavan's voice began to trail off at the end, however, once he noticed Danielle's reaction to Jasper's presence. The young man watched with a raised eyebrow as the two introduced themselves to each other. It was after they'd shaken hands that the two spent an additional few moments locking eyes with one another, which only made Kavan suddenly feel like an awkward third wheel.

Soon afterwards, however, Danielle returned her attention to Kavan and asked where his date was, to which he simply responded with a shrug of his shoulders. "I came with Ariel Grey. She went to get something to drink a few minutes ago..." the young man's voice trailed once again as he took a quick look around the room, searching for his red-headed friend. He spotted her pretty quickly. She was standing by the refreshment table, drinking from a paper cup just as she said she would. What momentarily caught the young man off guard, however, was who'd decided to join her just as she went to refill her cup.

"And... now she's over there speaking with her ex boyfriend. Great." While Kavan didn't necessarily have anything against Kavi Salvador, seeing the young man approach Ariel made him a little wary. To be honest, he wasn't sure how Ariel would handle the situation; as Kavan forced himself to look away and refocus his attention on the group he was now with, he couldn't help but hope that there wouldn't be yet another big scene.

It didn't take long for Chanel's best friend to find her on the crowded dancefloor; as Julie MacMillan danced against Chanel's back, she uttered a few words that made Chanel grin from ear to ear. "Awww thank you. But girl, you look even better. Yellow is definitely your color," the young woman said in response before watching her friend dance away, probably back to be with Sonny. It was after watching her friend leave that Chanel returned her attention to the poor boy she'd been gyrating against; it'd become pretty obvious that he'd be down for whatever Chanel suggested they do after the dance, but the young woman would be lying if she said that she were geniuinely interested. "Well, this was... fun." Chanel said to him as the song changed. "I think your date wants you back now!"

And before the young man could even muster up a response, Chanel quickly turned and pushed her way through the crowd. She didn't stop walking and lightly shoving until she'd found a refreshment table once again; it wasn't long before she started pouring herself another cup of punch. And after then, she was back to her people-watching.

Only a few seconds after Chanel had drained her cup, a familiar looking boy made his way over to the punch fountains. Chanel raised an eyebrow at the plate he held in his hands; he'd filled it to capacity with nearly everything that had been on the snack table. "The food here can't be that good," Chanel found herself unintentionally saying aloud. She followed her statement up with a light chuckle, hoping that she hadn't come off as rude. "You must be mad hungry... That fountain over there is spiked, by the way. Not sure who did it, though I can probably guess. They're a fucking gem for sure... Anyways, just making sure that you're aware. Uh... Sawyer, right? Gavin's brother."

As time went on, Archer was getting more and more pleased with his choice to ask April to the dance. They spent time just enjoying each other’s company bopping along to the music. Not that it was either of their tastes in music it was fun to people watch from their table. Like how Chanel riled up some poor dude on the dance floor only to leave him wanting a cold shower in the middle of it, or how Ariel and Kavi were standing 6 feet apart staring daggers at each other but with fake smiles plastered on their faces. Archer had to remind himself that it was not his business…do not get involved.

But before he had the chance to decide if he wanted to intervene or not he was interrupted by King’s Academy’s resident ball of sunshine Stella Lambert. “Oh hey Stella!” the boy greeted, trying to match her enthusiasm. “We’re having a grand old time aren’t we mama April?” he grinned at his date patting her hand. “Not much going on... yet,” he said turning his head, craning his neck to see if Mari and Rye were still getting nasty on the floor. They seemed to have left to do something else, something PG he hoped.

As Santiago arrived Archer instinctively pulled his hand off April’s. It was stupid, he was pretty sure the devil knew he was gay as fuck. His goonies had made that abundantly clear over the years. But still being near the man, made Archer nervous. Santiago had never done anything against him, but that was probably because he was best friends with Max. But when he saw how he treated April the lanky teen couldn’t help but think that he might have misjudged the devil.

When the two sharp slaps hit Archer on his back he choked on his water that he had been sipping. “Uh... No… We’ve just been sitting here observing.” he spluttered wiping the water from his shirt with a napkin.

A huge grin spread across Archer’s face as April offered him her hand. “Well… I’m not much of a dancer. My boyfriend can attest to that!” he laughed. His green eyes quickly shifted to Santiago’s face to look for some kind of reaction to his words. Paranoid he looked away before he could find anything out. “But lets to this!” he said as they stood up and made their way to the dancefloor.

For the time being, Jack's job was done (technically speaking). He'd managed to unite Shawna and Sunshine together. Now was for the Jack Goff special. Vibing by himself. Everyone seemed like they were busy at the moment with their dates. It wasn't like it was a completely new situation to him before, though. Jack had ways to figure out how to have fun by himself. But, at the same time, he couldn't have the same sort of fun he usually did at these parties, since he was also responsible for getting Shawna home safely.

Getting up and rolling his arm around, he decided he would at least get a break from the stuffy environment of the dance. Fresh air sounded good right now. Sighing, he made a beeline for the balcony, his drink in hand as he wanted to get some time to himself. He had to figure out how he was going to make the most out of a party where his date wasn't exactly his date, but he did it anyway because he wanted to be a homie. He never realized the situation it put him in.

Standing outside, he leaned on the balcony, sipping on his punch as he pondered how he could get turnt without getting turnt. He turned to a random dude, "You trying to figure out how to get turnt too?" Jack asked, rolling the cup in his hand. "Nah, I'm just here to get some air. I'm about to go back inside, actually. See ya dude." The random dude said, before getting off the railing and walking off. "Tough crowd tonight." Jack shrugged, before completely finishing his drink.

A @Bee & @Ejected collab.
Starring Nicole Milano and Carter Newton

”Damn Carter! You got some moves!” Nicole cheered, watching her lovely date work his moves on the dance floor. She never knew that Carter could bust out the moves that he could, and quite frankly it was a very welcome surprise to the cheerleader. ”You should teach me some of that.”

"Oh please," Carter said with a light chuckle and shake of his head, "You've got more moves than I do. All of this is just things I picked up from family cookouts." Carter knew he had rhythm, but to say that he was being a little out-shined by Nicole would be an understatement; But he didn't really mind it. It didn't take too much longer, however, for the young man to find himself a little parched from all the dancing. After taking a quick look around the room, Carter refocused his attention on his date and said, "You getting thirsty? Wanna go to the punch fountain?"

Carter’s proposition of going to the punch bowl was one that Nicole definitely wasn’t going to oppose. All that dancing was making her thirsty as well, on top of all the people they were around and the collective heat that radiated from them. She let out a sigh, before glancing at the punch table. ”Yeah! Take me there, Carter!”

And so, wrapping his arm around Nicole's once more, Carter led the young woman to their destination, pushing through the crowd as he did so. And when they finally reached the refreshment table, he poured both himself and Nicole their cups of punch. "Here you go," he said as he handed Nicole her cup, before going to take a sip from his own. The crimson red liquid came spewing back from his mouth and into the cup, however, only a few seconds after his lips touched the plastic. "Shit, of course someone spiked it. No thanks." Carter muttered to the young woman before throwing the entire cup into the nearby trashcan and reaching for a bottle of water instead. It was no secret that Carter was more of a smoker than he was a drinker. And, after all, he was the one who'd be driving he and Nicole home when the dance was over. He figured it'd be in both of their best interests to stay sober for the night.

Nicole was caught off guard by Carter randomly spitting out his drink and showing a face of disgust. What was wrong with the punch? Nicole looked down at her cup, which was untouched so far. ”Spiked it?” Nicole said, before looking down once more, ”Really? At a party like this? What?!” Nicole said, before she followed suit and threw the cup away. ”Good call, Carter. I can’t believe someone would even spike a drink like that.”

"I'm honestly not surprised," Carter said with a shrug of his shoulders. "I don't put it past anyone here. I just wonder how they managed to do it without some of the faculty seeing. Want a water instead?" As Carter spoke, he handed his bottle to Nicole before reaching for another for himself.

”I’d appreciate that!” Nicole beamed, before receiving the water bottle. She opened it, taking a rather long sip out of it. ”Hopefully this water is water. They can’t spike water can they?”

"No... no they can't, Nicole." Carter said with a half-smile before opening his own bottle and taking a few gulps. It was then that Carter decided to take another quick look around the room to see if he could spot any other familiar faces; it didn't take long for his eyes to land upon who he thought to be the most beautiful girl in the room.

Stella was standing with none other than the "Candy Man" himself, Santiago Fernandez. And standing with them were Kavan's boyfriend, Archer Diedrikson, and April Foster in all her pregnant glory. The small group had begun to make their way to the dance floor when Carter suddenly said, "Feel like hittin’ the dance floor again? There's someone over there that I kinda want to get a dance with before the night is over."

”You wanna dance with someone?” Nicole asked curiously, before looking over at the dance floor, ”Is it who I think it is?” Nicole smirked, looking at Carter.

Almost instantly, Carter could feel his cheeks burning a bit. The young man let out a nervous chuckle and rubbed the back of his neck before saying, "Yeah yeah, it's Stella... We're kind of a thing now. Or, well... becoming a thing, I guess." Carter hadn't really talked about this to anyone other than Chanel or his mom; It was a little hard for him to find the right words to say, which was pretty unusual if you knew Carter. So he just kept it simple. "I just really like her."

Hearing Carter explain his reasoning, Nicole’s smile grew wider. Romance was something Nicole always adored, and this was no exception to it. There was no way she was going to get in the way of Carter and his hopefully soon-to-be girlfriend. ”What are you waiting for, dude? Go for it! Follow your heart!”

"You're the best, Nicole," Carter said with a wide grin before sitting his water bottle down and starting off in Stella's direction, hoping that no one would mind him joining in.

Sawyer picked up a cup and inspected the inside of it, narrowing his eyebrows a little as he blew into it to expel whatever dust particles could've been residing there. Balancing his plate in his one hand, he carefully began to fill his cup with a randomly picked punch from the line, taking a sip. Mm. Some kind of limeade. Sawyer made a face at the aftertaste of the beverage.. bit on the sour side. Definitely wasn't a spiked one, though. The boy pressed his lips into a firm line as he looked at the other fountains before he heard a vaguely familiar voice come from behind him.

Her words forced his gaze to his plate, blushing deeply in embarrassment. Truth be told, he really hadn't paid attention to just how much he had filled his plate. Sawyer smiled sheepishly, replying, "Anything can taste amazing with help from a little bit of green." The young man chuckled, falling silent to listen to the rest of what she had to say, nodding with a slight smile. He'd definitely be sure to visit the specified punch fountain. "Yeah, that's me." 'Only known as Gavin's brother,' he thought to himself bleakly. "I'm sorry, I'm really bad with names. I know my brother hangs out with you from time to time, I've just never really paid attention to his friends. We run with two different crowds. What is your name?"

A familiar whistle and a holler from across the floor tore Sawyer's attention away a moment to glance back at his two friends who were trying to wave him back over, Sawyer waved them off with a 'hold on a minute' gesture. The boy turned his eyes back to Chanel, shaking his head. "Prime example. My brother's friends have manners and respect for others, mine clearly don't."

A @metanoia & @HaleyTheRandom Collaboration
Featuring Kavi Salvador & Ariel Grey

As he stood there, swallowing everything that was tugging at him to clap back at her, Kavi instead took it because he was better than that. He was better than the 2018 Kavi Salvador that might’ve said something underhanded that was only said out loud to bring out some kind of reaction out of her. He wasn’t that guy anymore. It didn’t matter to him if the entire school was against him nor did it matter to him.

“Right.” His response came out neutral and mostly without feeling. Kavi stopped the thought that wanted to come out and smiled. “Well, you look nice. So you have that going for you tonight at least,” he noted, keeping his eyes on her dark eyes. Those same eyes that had always been his weakness were now something that glared at him with such a disdain it brought him back to Santiago’s party at the start of last semester when she had her first freak out on him. Going from then to dating to where they were now, he often wondered what domino effect must’ve been in place to lead them to this very moment.

Leaning back on the table, Ariel rolled her eyes. She didn’t have time for fluff or fake compliments. She was done biting her tongue and filtering what she had to say.

”What do you want, Kavi? I know you didn’t come over here just to have a boring conversation and hand out compliments.”

”And what if that’s exactly what I wanted to do?” He asked her, staring her dead in her eyes. ”I mean, am I not allowed to acknowledge when you are a stone-cold fox anymore? Did I forego that right when it was decided we weren’t boyfriend and girlfriend?” Kavi knew he was being just a smidge overdramatic. Perhaps his time with King’s own drama queen was rubbing off on him. Or perhaps he was slowly easing his way into letting out all of what he buried the minute Ariel asked for the break.

”Oh please,” she scoffed, taking another sip of her drink. ”We both know that I was never really your type. But congrats on landing Chrissie! She’s a total knockout and I’m sure you two will get along fabulously.” Looking him up and down once again, she pursed her lips before speaking again. ”Maybe don’t let her dress you next time though.”

Yeah, you weren’t my type but that didn’t stop me from falling for you. Safe to say her comment actually stung and the decisive blow of him giving a shit anymore came when she mentioned Chrissie. It was in usual Ariel Grey fashion. She knew she liked him and he knew she knew he was heads over heels for her as well, but the one thing about his ex that didn’t always have an attractive appearance was her not-so-subtle way of projecting her jealousy into a hardly passive-aggressive attitude. He knew this about her because despite everything, Kavi paid attention to the things that mattered. Like right now, he knew she was moments away from blowing a gasket because she was tightening her fists in the same way she did when she broke up with him. He knew she was already at her limit because of how many times she took a sip from her solo cup. “Well don’t stop there, Ariel. Go on! Tell me how you really feel since you obviously got something to say.” No, Kavi don’t do that. It’s peace you’re trying to maintain. “But hey, maybe Great Value Kavi is rubbing off on you and you’ve lost the fire that made you stand out in a crowd.” Well, it’s not like he was good at peace talks. Bring on the war, baby!

”Don’t you even think about dragging Kavan into this,” Ariel said, her voice dripping with acid. Her left hand gripping her drink cup, she raised the right one, pointing a finger at the taller boy. ‘Great Value Kavi’? What kind of shit?! Kavan was nothing like Kavi. ”You don’t get to waltz over here and pretend like you want to have a semi-normal conversation with me in front of all these people to make yourself look like the good guy. You haven’t dared to message me in weeks, yet you want to conversate with me at the first school related thing we’re both forced in to?”

Ariel was fully aware that she was the one to call it quits and that Kavi didn’t owe her anything. It wouldn’t have killed him to answer a text or two though. ”I just don’t understand why out of all of these people - out of the whole senior class - you approach me? Why me, Kavi?” she asked, echoing her inner most thoughts. ‘Why me’ was a question that had been coming to mind a lot here lately. Maybe Kavi could shed some light on an answer for her.

“You seriously have no idea how hard it’s been for me, do you?” That was the first thing Kavi said and it was put out there before he even had a chance to think about it, but when it was, he took in a deep breath and continued, “I know, you’ll probably say ‘well look at how you were acting!? You have no idea how hard it’s been for me to be consistently humiliated by you’. And, fine, you’re right. I have no idea what it’s like, Ariel. I can’t possibly understand what it’s like inside that head of yours. I will never presume to understand how you feel or what you think on a day to day basis.” If she knew him at all, Kavi knew Ariel knew there was a but on its way. He took in a momentary breathe, letting shaking arms relax themselves a bit before continuing. “Listen, I get it. I know I could have texted or called or whatever’d you, but just because you decided we needed to take a break didn’t stop me from still loving you.”

For the second time, Kavi hadn’t realized what he just said until he took a moment to quietly reflect. When he did, he took a step back, looking first down at his hands as they tightened into loose fists. As he relaxed them, his eyes were back on Ariel. He inhaled and tried to relax himself, tried to give himself something to not make a slip of the tongue again. He hated putting himself out there when there was no guarantee that it wasn’t for nothing, but whenever he was near Ariel, he couldn’t help but feel exposed.

A wave of shock hit Ariel so forcefully that she would have sworn it nearly knocked her down. All of the things that Kavi did, all of the things that he had said - Ariel had all but chalked it up to him not loving her. He was always known for having a girl on his arm, and why Ariel had ever thought herself to be different, she didn’t know.

Turning away from him and tossing her cup in the trash in a basketball like fashion, Ariel grabbed yet another drink from the fountain. Taking her time with it so as to not look at Kavi, she took a moment to think. Eyebrows knit together in obvious confusion, the red head turned back around to do her best at looking him in the eye.

”It didn’t change it for me either but… I couldn’t put up with it anymore, Kavi. I couldn’t put up with you. I could have handled looking like a fool for a little longer if you had actually meant what you said on Christmas Eve. But that first day back at school with you calling Chanel a bitch and turning on Rye like that I just… it really didn’t make me think that you meant it. I’ve told you time and time again that you can’t just keep making me empty promises.” At this point Ariel wasn’t even sure if she was making sense. The alcohol was getting to her, and Kavi’s confessions were helping nothing. ”But it’s okay now!” she said with her best fake enthusiasm. ”You’re working to become the man you want to be, and you’re free of anyone - including me - holding you back. This isn’t a sitcom. I’m not Rachel, and you’re not Ross - you don’t owe me anything. I said for us to take a break because I just have so much shit going on right now and you aren’t helping. You weren’t helping and you standing here is just making it worse. I’ve drank and I’ve smoked and I’ve danced and I’ve written shit and I was just nearly over all this bullshit and now here you are again.”

Kavi knew he was faced with a choice. He knew what Ariel wanted him to do: to walk away and leave her in whatever half-drunk state she was in. He knew this because unlike others he had been with, he cared enough for her to know those little tidbits about her that not everyone knew. So many times in the past, Kavi had always walked away from would-be relationships. It happened with countless girls that he couldn’t remember their names. But Ariel was always different. He fought for her more times than a younger, selfish version of Kavi Salvador would have. In the past, he would have just given up after the first freak out, but time and time again, he kept coming back.

“Yes, here I am again.” Kavi felt that repeating it back to her might give him an answer or two, but all it did was make him angry that he didn’t know why. “I guess there’s no real point in saying anything now. I told you I still love you but that won’t make any difference, will it, Ariel? No amount of grand confessions or ‘empty promises’ (as you put it) will change things because you have already decided that I’m better off without you.” Kavi let out a sigh.

Pursing her lips, Ariel nodded her head as she looked towards the ceiling, quickly blinking away the forming tears of confusion. ”I don’t know what you want me to do,” she said hopelessly. ”I thought that maybe if we took a break we could think things over and it would be better.” Shrugging her shoulders, Ariel took her millionth drink for the night, the slight burn of the vodka no longer existent in her throat. ”But all I know is that you still love me and I still love you and it’s taking everything in me to not just walk to your house at three am, ask for forgiveness or whatever and be the fool again. I feel like I’m going insane - and not just because of you. There’s Trillian and the whole thing with my mom being dead and how my life is coming together and falling apart at the same time and everything is so, so confusing and then there’s you, Kavi. There’s always you. So tell me what you want from me so I can finally scratch off one of the many things from my list. Please.”

If he was paying attention at all, Kavi would see how sincere she was really being. It wasn’t that Ariel had lost her fire - she was just tired. What little buzz she had conjured was gone, and all that was left was the side of her that was pleading for an answer.

For whatever reason, while everyone around him was experiencing the best moments of their high school lives with those they knew they were going to spend their lives with, Kavi kept going around in circles, repeating the same mistakes and hardly learning from them. The person he had professed his love to multiple times or swore to be this or that ended up getting burned every time. He never intended to hurt her, but nevertheless, his actions had consequences.

“I guess I don’t know what I want.” Maybe that was the truth or perhaps it was him trying to not be selfish for once. He could say she was what he wanted. He could tell her that ever since they broke up, no matter who came at him, there was never any question who had his attention or who met more to him than Ariel Grey. But it was clear to him he was doing more harm to her mental health than anything else. And the last thing he wanted to do was be the reason she cried. “Sorry for bothering you. I’ll leave you be.” He gave her a minimal wave. “Hope you enjoy the dance,” he said, turning away in an attempt to go back to the dancefloor.

”Kavi,” she called out, reaching forward to grab him by the arm. ”I’m sorry. Really - I am.”

He smiled back at her, shaking his head. “Don’t be. You’re doing what you know is best for you.” As strange as it was, he didn’t feel sad or anything close to it. Truth be told, Kavi was happy for Ariel for focusing on herself and what she thought was best for her. If that meant being without him for a while, he could accept that. He gave it his best shot, but at the end of the day, what she needed wasn’t a proclamation of his love for her but just space. “I mean it. Don’t feel guilty for putting yourself first. You deserve to be happy, Ariel.”

Love was a complicated thing. While Ariel needed space from Kavi, and he needed space from her - they both still loved each other. Maybe at another time and place things would have worked out differently. Perhaps they’d both have their shit worked out and they would compliment each other rather than fighting all the time. Standing on her tiptoes to give him a peck on the cheek, Ariel let go of his arm and looked him in the eye one last time.

”Just know that I’m still here if you need anything, yeah?” Slapping an academy award-winning fake smile on her face, Ariel did her best to sound a little more upbeat. ”Now go enjoy the rest of your night!”

He didn’t know how he could but for her, he’d do anything. “You better have fun too!” He flashed her one last smile before disappearing into the dancefloor, his attire proving to be beneficial to him because the soft watermelon pink had blended in with the pinks and reds originating from the disco ball that hung above.

Now if I keep my eyes closed he looks just like you...

Much to Ariana’s delight, it seemed like her charm and seduction tactic was working. Max had enthusiastically kissed her back, and quickly asserted his dominance by pushing her up against the wall. Good, this was good… It meant he was in a good mood, that she’d been overreacting and that she’d had no reason to be panicking in the first place. And with how tempting he was looking under these lights and how good he was kissing her, there was no denying they'd be heading off somewhere a little more private in no time.

“But there has been one thing that has been bothering me...”

Oh no…

The brunette’s blood turned to ice, and she tensed up as quickly as she’d lowered her guard in the first place. She was thankful that Max had stepped back and was now pacing in front of her, because it meant he couldn’t feel how stiff her body had become.

“You and me both know that we are good together… But I also… do not like to share!”

OhGodOhGodOhGodOhGodOhGodOhGodOhGod...

By this point, it was taking every fiber of Ariana’s being to not go into hysterics, but she did play things off with a nervous little giggle. Max definitely knew something was going on with her-- there was no doubt about it. His comment had confirmed as much. Whether it was Jasper or Jace, she had no clue. But if he didn’t say a name or go into detail of the sin she’d committed, she sure as hell wasn’t going to be throwing out names or admitting to anything. So instead, she remained silent, nervously waiting for his next words and dreading what she knew would be coming next.

“What I am getting at is-” Max paused again, cupping her face in his hand before running it through her hair. It was a miracle he couldn’t feel her shaking nervously under his grasp. “If we want to do this, I want to do it correctly. Meaning you are mine… and I am yours.” he finally finished, closing off his proposal with a breathtaking kiss.

Oh fuck.

There were the words she always dreaded to hear when it came to her open relationships.

Although she followed his lead and kissed him back with enthusiasm, Ariana could feel her heart sinking inside her chest. It wasn’t that she didn’t care for Max, because he’d definitely always held a special place in her heart. He was quite a catch: a handsome, charming, dedicated athlete with an easygoing attitude, a quick sense of humor, a kind heart and nothing short of a beast in bed. She was certain plenty of girls would kill to be in her position. But the word commitment was not in her vocabulary, nor was the idea of tying herself down to one person when there was a whole world out there full of different individuals and so many experiences to live. That was one of the qualities that drew her to Max in the first place. How did he go from being content with their flexible arrangement to wanting to officialize their relationship? That was the million dollar question she’d definitely be asking later.

“So what do you say?”

Once the kiss had ended and he’d spoken up again, Ariana stared helplessly at Max. If he was asking her to be exclusive after so many years of him playing casanova and the fiasco with Kellie Anne, it meant he knew how he felt about her and was dead serious about what he was proposing. He wouldn’t ask just anyone to be with him, after all, and the last thing she wanted was to break the poor boy’s heart. But tying herself down like this...

“I- ” the girl began but immediately trailed off, biting her lower lip in uncertainty. God, she fucking hated to be put in the spot like this. “You do know what you’re asking for, right?” she eventually inquired, in both an attempt to stall her answer and give Max a chance to stop and really think about what he was proposing. “If I say yes, it means you don’t get to mess around with anyone else either. So, are you sure you can give up the playboy life? Because you know I don’t like sharing either.”

Please say no, please say no, please say no…

As Stella watched Archer slide in a few comments here and there, she mostly kept her eyes elsewhere, occasionally glancing towards the dancefloor. She saw Kavi and Chrissie's outrageous moves that immediately forced her to divert her gaze elsewhere. It was then she saw Marisol and that Ryland Aspen walked over to the DJ booth and seemingly talking to the man in charge of forging the dance's soundtrack. She shrugged as she danced in place, minimally rocking her hips back and forth. Pillowtalk was such a banger and even if she didn't have anyone to dance with to it, she didn't mind grooving to it as Santiago and April caught up.

Truth be told, Stella wanted to find Carter, but for humble reasons, she had convinced herself staying by Santiago's side was the right thing to do, especially since April and Archer had just excused themselves to the dancefloor. Looking at them, she smiled and she had to think that Santiago was happy as well. She didn't want to assume that she knew what he felt, but it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out Santiago. Once she got to know him a little better, his tells were as obvious as Chrissie's dress was atrocious to look at. She knew he was happy that April was enjoying herself. Stella knew that her happiness meant the world to Santiago and something about how much he loved her made the brunette giggle for some reason.

"Oh, sorry," she said, giggling still. She tried to end her giggling fit and went back into silence. She looked away from her date and around the ballroom, once more searching for Carter. To her delight and butterfly-flapping, nerve-filled stomach, there he was, looking as delicious as he was sweet. Every inch of her body that could stay standing trembled and shook with such a pulse-pounding, intense feeling that for some reason she waved at him as he talked to Nicole. "CARTER OVER HERE!" Before she could stop herself, her voice screeched out at ear-deafening levels. If he wasn't able to see her before, now she was sure he could. "Oh my god, Santiago what did I just do..." She looked at her date, seeking an answer -- and possibly advice -- about the heart-sinking mistake she just made.

Or maybe it wasn't.

Ugh, she didn't know. All she knew was that Carter was walking towards them and every step felt like she was that much closer to her grave.

From highs to lows and back up again, Ryland needed to force himself to stop sulking about every little thing that was wrong and get out of this funk. Focus on the right. Using Christmas as an excuse for his shit behavior was not going to cut it anymore. His suspension from Beverly Hills High was the catalyst to the fight his parents had on what to do with him. He barely could recall the fight, because he didn't care to remember it. At least not then.

This started a year or so ago, where he fell too far in his own head. When he shouted, the voices overpowered his own voice. His heart weighed a ton, which made it hard to aspire for more. When the expectations caused him to shut in, his depression held onto him, like a noose. For far too long he felt like a dead man walking and only now did he realize what that meant.

This move was turning out to be better for him than he expected. It was forcing him to confront this bottled up anger in him, his frustration on things he had no control over, and the emptiness he gained from being completely aimless. He didn't see his future like Zayden, his big bro, did. He could never be like his brother who mapped out everything and just knew exactly what he wanted. He needed to be his best self, by simply focusing on the present. This is the time that mattered the most. Rather than think of all the questions he didn't have answers for, he'd simply just be and live free.

As he made a special request from the DJ, he couldn't help but replay the incident that caused him to distance himself from the entire student body of King's that wasn't the misfits. People are ingrained with the belief that first impressions last forever and you never get a second chance. For a moment there, he was starting to believe that too.

With a good metaphorical slap in the face by bestgirl Marisol, he knew that wasn't what he believed and that would never be something he'd believe. That was the depression telling him he'd continue to disappoint his father, so why try. Putting so much value in first impressions was a big mistake because than it would be all downhill from there. Luckily, for him, no one held him to any standard. If anything, his year barely knew him since he joined so late in the game. That would be Rye's advantage. The fact that no one knew what to expect. Not even his friends.

There's a spark in him that shows he's indeed his father's son. Whether he is aware of it or not, this flare gets him to shine in moments like these. See, innately, he can resonate his mind with his soul and through that confidence, hard-won, yet deep and anchored in his true self, he is capable of living life and loving those around him in such a honest and raw way.

From the day he was pinned against the locker by Miss Julie Macmillan to their days that led to this dance, he questioned why he was so enthralled by her. At first, he thought it was because she made him so angry that he wanted to ruin that pretty smile right off her soft skinned face. Then he thought it was because she was undeniably gorgeous, and both him and Marisol could agree she was ideal masturbation material. First impressions and looks aside, he started noticing her and why she was considered royalty at this school.

Sure, she was self-absorbed, but so was he. She was dedicated to the things she did, and boy did she keep herself busy. While she was spoiled, she had a considerable amount of emotional warmth radiating from her toward those she trusted with her life. Falling for her grace and her poise was the easy part, admitting it to his whole damn year was something he was finding himself struggling with and for once, he was nervous.

Even with a fortunate, privileged background, he had no class. That's where they differed. He never believed to be a prince charming, and he would never pretend he could be. Part of him was attracted to how well she kept it all together. Another part of him wanted her to show him what was behind it all. What kept her going? What were the dark parts she didn't want anyone to see? What was... behind that smile?

Admitting how lovestruck he was by someone he barely knew simply because she existed was beyond anything he had ever experienced. He got bored easily, and had too much energy to contain, he jumped from one hobby to the next to keep himself busy. Then there was this girl he just couldn't get out of his mind. The most constant thought he's had in a long time. He knew this was a risk he needed to take or he'd never know. He'd never know he'd be good enough to someone who held herself to such a high standard. She who had the right blend of sweet, shy, and headstrong. He knew that he wanted her and so there was no time like the present. They were young, he was dumb, and he was going to start acting like it.

The DJ abruptly turned off the music, causing Ryland to anxiously clear his throat, which was picked up on the mic he was holding. "Hey, yeah. Can I get everyone's attention please?" After some grumbling and chatter of 'who the hell is this guy', Rye steadied his breathing, and in return his racing heartbeat. He knew these kids would lose their patience so he needed to make the speech part quick, or try to at least. "For those that don't know me, I'm Ryland Aspen, that new kid who transferred with only one semester left. I used to live here, that's why some of you, like the cool kids, Marisol, Sonny, Archer, Ariel, and Kavan know me. I'm that kid that called a good friend of mine stupid, when she was just trying to do what makes her happy." Searching in the crowd for Ariel, he waved at her, with a goofy, toothy, grin, in front of everyone, and shouted, "Fuck what everyone thinks. Do you and BE HAPPY! Sorry I can be kind of a douche and thanks for sticking around."

To keep everyone's attention on him, he spun the mic's wire to make a quick circle in front of him. While he wanted to use this opportunity to apologize to Sonny about getting in between him and his girl, he knew that this wasn't the time. Everyone knew about the shitshow that happened on the first day of classes, with Ariel, April, and the rest of them, but no one needed to know that Marisol desperately sought out her boyfriend's attention. She needed to know she was still his number one girl and that wasn't Rye's place to get in between. "NOW, for the point of all this."

With quick improvisation, and requesting a song he knew the DJ would have on his playlist, his soft gaze went from Sonny to Julie. The girl that was turning out to be the apple of his eye, as cheesy as that sounded. Truth was, she was the one thing he wanted to aim for. His destination. The worst thing that could happen was she would reject him, which would suck but he would never know if he didn't at least try. "Since I can't really explain this myself... here goes nothing."

"This is for you, Julie." The ballroom was still silent as they waited for the DJ to bring things back to normal or Rye to make a fool of himself. Instead, what broke the silence was Rye singing to nothing but the sound in his head: "I wanna follow where she goes. I think about her and she knows it. I wanna let her take control. 'Cause every time she gets close. Yeah." His voice was slightly above mediocre. This, of course, wouldn't stop him from using his voice to get his message across. LOUD and CLEAR. At this point, the DJ started to fade the song in slowly. "She pulls me in enough to keep me guessin'. Hmm. And maybe I should stop and start confessin'."

The song at full blast, surprisingly good coordination and teamwork for a last minute grand gesture, Rye decided to switch to his stronger suit. "CONFESSIN', YEAH!" No longer singing, he tossed the mic back to the DJ and let the adrenaline rush into his blood stream. Jumping off the platform, he let his body do the talking, painting a picture of the playful and vibrant soul that he was. His limbs were half liquid in perfect rhythm, and still looking strong, as he went from an air walk to a side glide, the crowd creating an opening for him. The only time dazzling grace could be seen in Rye was when he danced and here he could unleash his unyielding desire for this woman that bewitched him body and soul.

When he approached the drinking table, where both Sonny and Julie stood, and a bunch of others, he did a little shimmy in front of the two, purposely silly unlike the skill and prowess he displayed across the dance floor, "Hey Son, Sol needs you." His expression was apologetic, and it was visible that he didn't want to be involved in whatever problems those two shared in the background. It was time he focused on himself and crash into happiness. Like he was doing right now.

Oh, I've been shakin'

With limited time on his hands, and wanting to take advantage of how confused Julie probably was, he started bouncing in front of her to the beat, "I'm going to do this for the whole damn song, and night, so, yeah..."

I love it when you go crazy

He didn't want to lose the momentum and hoped she'd give him the time of day. He'd take a dance, if it meant she'd look past her first impression of him. "Care to dance?"

You take all my inhibitions

Beaming in front of her, he clapped his hands and matched Shawn Mendes' words, for the second round of the chorus, "Baby, there's nothing holding me back!" Since the song was already half way through, he did request the DJ to keep the energy high with the next selection, so he could get his crush to focus on the hype rather than think about the possibility of rejecting him.

Offering his hand to grab, while still jumping like an idiot, he gave her a puppy dog pout. Agonizingly anxious yet hiding it behind his conviction and eagerness, Rye waited for her response.

Please just take my hand.

Sonny had never witnessed a hostage-like situation before outside of films and shows on Netflix and Hulu, but watching Ryland take complete control over the dance was as close as he was ever gonna come to seeing such a thing happen. And he had to admit it took balls. Sonny didn’t care about most of the people around him. To be honest, outside of the Misfits, Stella, and even Kavi to an extent, the only other person Sonny really gave a damn about was the elegant and equally stunning redhead that towered over him. Their bond of friendship meant the world to him and he had remembered her speak about the obnoxious Ryland. He understood why she felt like that. Rye was a lot to handle at times. Even to his closest friends, he could be a bit of a douche.

So, that’s why Sonny watched Rye stand over everyone with a microphone in his hand, and his voice starting to echo like a holler in a pictureless hallway.

In the beginning, Rye demanded attention. “Yeah, like that’s anything new,” Sonny murmured, laughing under his breath as he let his friend continue. As he did, he went on to formally introduce himself as though gaining the approval of most of the asshats in their class was something he needed to do. Sonny shook his head at that and how he directly gave Ariel a wave. “Oh yeah, I’m sure she’s going to just appreciate being singled out like that.” Again, the peanut gallery had some more opinions.

The next bit was some generic Kodiak moment about being happy and all that sappy useless bullshit. He thought he was going to throw up. Whether or not that had to do with the alcohol in the punch or Ryland trying to sound like a romantic remained to be seen, but through it all, Sonny still didn’t have an inkling of where he was going with this.

Sonny was about to walk forward. He was mid-step when his idiot friend directed his attention at a very specific person. When Sonny heard his date’s name being mentioned, he stopped with his foot still in the air and his attention (as with everyone else’s) was directed on Julie.

Deep in his stomach, Sonny felt it twist and lock itself in complex knots as it donned on him just what was happening. He knew what Rye was doing and it made him sick. Not because he was against it. Lord knows he didn’t care if Rye loved Julie or not. If he did, then good for him. As long as he was happy. No, Sonny was annoyed for a different reason.

As Rye’s voice screeched and made his ears bleed, Sonny couldn’t tear his gaze away from Marisol. She appeared to be as shocked as Sonny was or maybe she wasn’t. Perhaps his girlfriend was in on this. “Of course she would be,” Sonny muttered, gritting his teeth. He tried to block out most of Rye’s singing. But something he couldn’t unsee was Ryland’s dance moves. Yeah, he wasn’t bad but did he really need to go that far. And lord knows what Julie must think of all of this…

Sonny shook his head, his eyes going between the three people who would otherwise mean the world to him but the only person he couldn’t stop worrying about was, in fact, his date. But perhaps that’s why he wasn’t told about this. How dare Sonny spend time with his date, right? How dare Sonny stick to a plan that Marisol coerced him into?

Yeah, it might be an understatement to say he wasn’t happy. Another understatement would be how close he was from reaching his breaking point, but Sonny was a chill guy. Or at least, he could learn to be chill. Maybe all of this wasn’t as it appeared to be.

And then Rye was in front of them. Of all the things he could have said to him, he dared tell him his girlfriend needs him? Why couldn’t she say that to him herself?

Chill Sonny. Don’t get worked up. Just smile.

And so he did. “Thanks for the heads up.” His voice came out neutral, though partially with a small percentage of the anger he was feeling. He turned to Julie, smiling. “Guess I’ll see you later.” Sonny offered her an apologetic smile that was filled with worry from the way his eyes focused on her and the way his lips slowly curled.

Waiting for a moment, the teen took to the parted dancefloor and quickly made his way across it. He fixed his narrowed eyes on Marisol, marching his way over to the DJ’s booth. Without so much as a warning, he grabbed his girlfriend by the wrist, pulling her away from the ballroom and to a secluded corner that was far enough away from anybody. Should the music start back up again, he knew they would be far enough so they could talk.

Once they came to a stop, Sonny glared at her. The first time they would actually be near each other since the dance started and it wasn’t a happy reunion. “Okay, start talking. What the fuck was that, huh!?” Sonny’s voice was high and cracking slightly with a rising temper in it.

When Ariana’s eyes almost bulged out of her head when he had asked her to be his and all she could do was giggle nervously, it made Max worried. It sent a chill down the burly teen’s spine and gave him a pang in his stomach he just couldn’t shake off, though he tried with one of his huge smiles. He pushed himself off the wall again just keeping eye contact with Ariana as he stood silent.

While she was mulling his question over. Max looked around at the nature that surrounded them. It was weirdly calming as he watched the trees sway in the wind. Maybe he had made a mistake of asking Ariana this. He had gotten the feeling that she wanted to be with him, but maybe he was wrong.

Max turned his attention back to the bombshell in white that was standing in front of him. Raising his eyebrows indicating he was expecting an answer from her this century, his smile still intact.

“I- ” she bagan and paused. “You do know what you’re asking for, right?” she asked.

She was stalling.

“If I say yes, it means you don’t get to mess around with anyone else either. So, are you sure you can give up the playboy life? Because you know I don’t like sharing either.”

Max just stared at her when she finished talking, he couldn’t get himself to speak. Had he not just clarified that he was ready to be with her and only her? He was known to be slow to catch on, but Ariana had always been someone he would deem as smart. “Wha…?” he began still looking at her trying to figure out what her deal was. Then it hit him… she didn’t think he was the best option for her. Yet.

He scrunched his eyebrows together “You know Ariana…” he shifted on the spot where he stood. “If you think that about me... “ he began as he started to back away from her. “You think I asked you to be with me and only me and then not follow the same rules?” he crossed his arms in front of him his large smile now replaced with a frown, a rare sight for the lacrosse captain’s face. She wasn’t unsure if he could be with only her… she was unsure if she wanted to give up on her other options. “A simple no would have been better…” he stated. This whole interaction had not gone as he had anticipated and it had taken a toll on his ego. He was starting to get frustrated and frankly… done with the whole situation.

“You know what?” he asked Ariana trying to put on his usual smile “It’s fine.” he turned on his heel and began to walk back inside. “Let me know when you figured out what you really want…” he looked back at her with a smile before going back into the valentine’s dance.

Not really knowing where to go, he decided the best way to deal with this was to go sit down with his lacrosse team and their dates. Their loud shouting and laughter would drown out whatever thoughts he had. As he sat down Max was greeted loudly with fist bumps and pats on the back. He gave minimal efforts to reciprocate, all he could do was stare at the door he had just come through.

Even though the DJ was not really pumping out the Music that Archer usually would listen to he appreciated that he did a good job of getting people pumped and out on the dancefloor. Even someone like him with two left feet enjoyed himself flopping around with his date. At least he could make April laugh with his movements. After a few dances, he realized that as much as he was enjoying dancing with April, there was one person he would like to this with the whole evening. Kavan.

When the song finished he grabbed April by the hand and lead her back to the table where Stella, Santiago, and now Carter stood. “I’ll let you take the next few dances.” he said patting the devil on the shoulder in an attempt at male bonding, which he regretted immediately. His face probably showing it. “I’m going to find my better half… see you guys later” he gave a small wave to the group as he made his way through the crowd in search of his boyfriend.

It didn’t really take that much time to spot the tall, dark, and handsome teenager standing and talking to some of their classmates. When Archer got closer he recognized the blond one as Jasper and the other one as… wait, what? Was that his cousin?! Why the hell was she here? He wracked his brain as he drew closer. He seemed to remember that his mother had mentioned that Dani and her family might be moving back. But seeing her at the dance was came as a shock.

When he arrived he snaked an arm around Kavan planting a kiss on his cheek. “Hey, Van… missed you!” he whispered to him before turning to the others. “Jasper… nice to see you.” His green eyes flicked to his cousin, confusion swimming in them. “Dani… surprised to see you here.” he began “I didn’t know you had moved already… also who brough-” then it hit him. Of course, his aunts had set up an old fashion cousin date for her and Max. Again he thanked the stars and the moon for April. If not for her maybe he was the one who had to commit social suicide and come to a dance with his cousin.

“Well… Welcome to King’s I guess!” he chuckled awkwardly. It wasn’t that he and his cousin didn’t get along. It was just that they had very little in common. And their father’s had always lumped Dani together with Warren as they both were athletic and Archer… was not. But before they could exchange more than pleasantries. The music got cut off and the room became silent and a familiar voice echoed through the speakers.

Archer’s eyes widened as Ryland spoke. What was happening? It sounded like the boy had had the realization of a lifetime. When he finished a lot happened at once, first Ryland stood awaiting Red’s response, then Torvie stood up in a huff and marched right over to Marisol and started talking very intensely.

His knee jerk reaction was to step in and defuse the situation but for the third time that evening, he had to convince himself: This is not your problem… stay out of it. Instead, he tightened his grip around his boyfriend and gave him a worried look.

“Happy Valentine…” he gave him a weak smile.

“I wonder what it’s spiked with” Julie mused holding the clear cup up to the lights as if to see if she could spot it. Of course, she couldn’t but as the only thing she could taste besides the fruit flavor was the taste of alcohol she had to assume it was bad smuggle vodka. The redhead sat down on a chair next to Sonny, even though her shoes looked amazing with her dress they hurt like hell.

When he asked her if she was having a good time she just looked up at him and smiled sweetly. “Well you can tell your mother that I am having a wonderful time” she laughed a little. But she couldn’t help but wonder why he would think otherwise. But before she could elaborate on those thoughts, a tall figure caught her and Sonny’s attention.

“What is he up to?” her date asked.

The girl rested her head on her hand “Good question…” she whispered back raising an eyebrow. She hadn’t really had much interaction with the mysterious transfer student save for their introduction where she had almost felt him up. But Julie had a keen eye she had seen and felt his intense stares whenever she had said hello to Sonny and the rest of the Misfits in the hallways of King’s. No doubt that she found him interesting, and let’s face it very good looking.

Julie looked on with an amused look on her face as Ryland started speaking about who he was and his friends. A smile spread across her face as he apologized to Ariel and ended with the sentiment to do what made you happy. And anyone who knew Julie knew that was her life motto. She almost wanted to stand up and cheer him on, but there was no time for that because he suddenly changes the tone by speaking her name.

Her head slipped of her hand in shock, her eyes wide as she looked dumbfounded towards Sonny who looked equally confused. Which at least confirmed that this wasn’t some planned prank from his side. But then Ryland started to sing. The shock had yet to wear off, and Julie could do nothing but to rise from her seat and look around. She was looking for something to make sense and finally found Chanel standing a few feet away she locked eyes with her best friend and mouthed “What is going on?” as if Chanel would have the answers. She usually did. Being the center of this kind of grand gestured made her slightly uncomfortable, usually, she was the one making it.

Soon enough he had stopped singing and had started dancing, and he danced very well. Even when he was dancing over to them where they stood dumbfounded. It was as if all sound was drowned out when he arrived as he spoke a few words to Sonny, Julie couldn’t really concentrate on anything but the dancing boy in front of her.

Her eyes traveled all over his frame. Broad shoulders, long hair, and kind eyes that crinkled as he smiled. She focused next on how he was dressed as she always did, grey casual suit paired with a striped t-shirt… I could work with that Julie thought to herself as her blue eyes traveled down and landed on a pair of white pointy-toed shoes that looked like they were from the nineties… bold.

"Care to dance?"

A small smirk crept on to Julie’s face as she tore her gaze away from those moving white vintage shoes, facing Ryland once again. She confidently grabbed his outstretched hand and took the lead towards the dance floor.

“I hope you can keep up… new kid” she said as she passed him. The onlookers whooping and clapping as they joined them dancing around.

As Gavin's brother responded to what she had to say, Chanel let her gaze sweep over the crowd once again, her eyes searching for nothing in particular. She couldn't help but smile a bit as she watched each of her friends enjoy the dance in their own ways; everything was running smoothly... for the time being. It was only after she heard the young man mention something green that she returned her focus to him. "Yeah, I know exactly what you mean..." the young woman said slowly, wondering whether or not she should ask if he had any on him. After a few moments of internal debating, however, she decided against it. She'd just have to be content with the vodka spiked punch for the night.

Chanel's head turned slightly when the sound of whistles and hollering interrupted their conversation; the young woman stared blankly in the direction of Sawyer's friends for only a split second before returning her attention to Sawyer once more. "It's fine, I'm not so great with names either. I'm Chanel," she said, offering him a half-smile. "You can go on with your friends if you want, I don't mean to hold you up or anything. Seems like they're dying for you to come back." Chanel was just about to say more when something else abruptly caught her attention.

"Hey, yeah. Can I get everyone's attention please?"

Redirecting her attention to the DJ booth, Chanel let a confused expression take over her face as she did so. She spotted none other than the guy who'd been involved in the hallway altercation a while back; it took her a second to recall his name, and she did so right before he made his own introduction. "Oh, brother..." Chanel muttered to Sawyer as she listened to the first few seconds of the boy's speech. "What the fuck is this?" It took Ryland a while to finally get to the point, but boy, when he finally did... to say that Chanel was completely shocked would be an understatement.

His singing was nothing spectacular, and it took every ounce of strength in Chanel's body to prevent her from either bursting into laughter or dying from second-hand embarrassment. When Julie's eyes met hers, Chanel simply offered the woman a shrug of her shoulders, as if to say "I have no clue." But when he started dancing, however, Chanel's jaw nearly hit the floor. She watched for a few seconds before catching her friend's eye once more and mouthing, "HELL. YES." And just like that, as Chanel watched her best friend be whisked away to the dance floor, any remaining disdain the young woman had felt towards Ryland suddenly disappeared. Chanel was the first to start off the applauding and screaming.

"Well... that was cute, wasn't it?" Chanel said with a grin as she refocused on Sawyer and poured herself another cup. "Kinda weird at first. And very, very unexpected. But... cute. I'm happy for her."

While neither of the members of their awkward pair were particularly great at dancing, that didn’t mean it wasn’t entertaining. In fact, it was the most fun part of this school-run-get-together yet. The pregnant girl dancing with her gay date, a sight truly confusing for those who only knew one of them, but an expected sight for anyone going to King’s Academy. The infamous “can’t select your own partner” KA dances, ones which every single student absolutely hated, and yet because of a few select members of the faculty, were ones that always stayed around.

And so even though the pair looked rather out of place and certainly anything but normal, at least from April’s perspective, they were having a blast. It was admittedly not terribly comfortable for the brunette--turns out having an extra bit of weight in front of you while dancing makes things a bit more difficult--but despite all that, she still tried her best to enjoy it. If not for herself, then for Archer.

When they finally went back to their table and Archer said his farewells, April looked to Santiago with a gentle smile across her lips, evidently quite happy to see him once again. She walked over slowly to him, before hugging him gently and putting her head against his chest “Have you two been having fun, mi amor?“ she asked, smiling to Stella before she called out for Carter quite loudly.

“Well...that’s one way to get his attention Stell. Now he’ll definitely notice you.” she grinned, looking back to Santiago. And just as she opened her mouth to say something, Ryland’s voice came over the microphone. A rather unexpected, but also rather unwelcomed voice in April’s mind.

And as he continued to speak, April just got more and more confused before any other emotion crossed her mind. Wasn’t he the one that Julie had just pinned to a locker not long ago? Weren’t we supposed to be hating him… April wondered to herself, looking to Julie now as Ryland danced in front of her. “That’s one way to get her attention… she mumbled to herself, before returning her attention to Santiago.

“Well, since your date is about to be preoccupied with another guy and my date is about to be preoccupied with another guy, I think I’d like to be preoccupied with my guy. April grinned, looking up Santiago’s very clean and sharp looking suit, ending on his ever so charming eyes that had always gotten the better of her. “Our kid is going to be hot.”

Normally, a sudden bout of blindness would be cause for concern, especially for a young woman at a party where covert drinking was happening. Blindness could mean any number of things. Someone poured too much moonshine into the punch. An unplanned power outage. The end of days.

“Guess who!”

Luckily for Shawna, the sound of the voice and the giggles afterwards confirmed that her temporary loss of sight was unrelated to any of those things.

“You know I wouldn’t have any clue if it weren’t for the fact that the only person I know who would giggle after doing something like this would be you, Chrissie!”

Returning the gift of sight back to her friend, Chrissie maneuvered around her to be closer to the table. She examined her options, her green gaze resting on the punch and the fountain that kids were eagerly taking drinks from. “Where’s your darling Sunshine? She was here just seconds ago.”

Momentarily, she looked around as if she cared to search for her. A girl who she didn’t know much about, yet seemed to be the new obsession for her lovely friend. Sunshine and Chrissie socialized from time to time, but nothing beyond idle chatter. “That’s too bad.” She muttered out loud, even adding a sigh for dramatic effect. Chris wanted to get to know Sunshine beyond singing musical songs together.

Pooey.

The party must’ve been passing her by, since Shawna’s current lover was no longer in sight. Perhaps, she was hidden behind one of these tall individuals. Nevertheless, Chrissie’s priorities were on her friend and how she’s been. That’s what friends truly cared about. Not their fleeting sexual and ‘romantic’ bouts. What time is it anyways? Losing interest in the topic of Shawna’s girlfriend as quick as she brought her up, Chris was back to the drink table, “The punch looks awfully sweet.”

Shawna was just as confused as Chrissie was. Sunshine had just been here not a moment ago, but she was gone without a trace. There must have been some reason for it. Maybe one of the other cheerleaders needed help with something. Who knows?

Chrissie however, it had been a while since they had a chance to have a true tete-a-tete. Not since the return of school really. That first day when Shawna and Sunshine admitted to themselves what had been happening and made it official. Chrissie had been a consultant on that progression, sure. As one of Shawna’s oldest friends at King’s she was going to get a say, but it almost seemed like they drifted a little bit.

Until now.

Chrissie asked about the punch, and what kind of person would Shawna be if she didn’t let Chrissie know about what truly lurked beneath those blood-red waves and floating orange slices? “That punch is sweet, but much like most of the people here, it packs a hidden wallop, if you catch my drift,” she informed her friend. “So if that’s your speed tonight, grab a cup and join me.” Shawna punctuated this with a sip of her own refilled beverage.

Catching the drift and taking it, the drama queen expected it to be trash liquor, which it was. Grimacing a little at the poor quality, but knowing this was the best her night was going to get, Chris decided to catch up with everyone else and chug it. Since it tasted like juice still, she was sure people were drinking it as such. This meant that sooner rather than later drunk teens would be losing all their inhibitions. For better or for worse, the Valentine’s dance would get chaotic, wild, and more importantly, exciting.

“And then catch me up? How have you been? It looks like we both lost our quote-unquote dates for this Valentine’s Day,” she said, unsure of where Jack had rumbled off to. Seemed she was about as skilled at keeping track of her companions on V-Day as she was on Halloween. “I mean, I also lost my girlfriend, but I’m sure she’ll boomerang back at some point.”

“I love my date! He’s a hoot. Probably went to talk to his ex. Yeah, seems like something he’d do.” Grabbing another cup, Chrissie noticed that Shawna’s cup was getting low so she poured her drink in her’s, and went for another. Her emerald eyes were over critical, in typical judgey Chrissie fashion, as she turned to look at the crowd. With her free hand, she slid it on her friend’s back to her hip and pulled her close.

“I’ve been just peachy. My winter slump sucked, but now I’m back to my daily routine.” Chrissie wasn’t drunk enough to bring up the problems she had with Stella. Honestly, the mere thought of her cousin soured her mood. So, like the better person that she was, she would act like she didn’t exist. “My life is a bore. Everyone is falling for someone around me. Let’s talk more about you. Lord knows I talk too much. How have you been, babe?” The little minx glanced up at her, Shawna six inches taller, and gave a kittenish smile. Regardless of how much Shawna has talked about Sunshine to her, it was obvious Chrissie still didn’t acknowledge it. To her, Sunshine was just another fling.

Shawna had almost taken another sip, but when Chrissie mentioned her date talking to an ex, that set off some major alarm bells. There were only a couple major exes that she knew about and both of them were a plethora of bad news. The thought of Chrissie being friends with either Max or Kavi was slightly revolting. Of course, there were surely people who thought that her being friendly with Jack was on that same level. Still, at least Jack had some redeeming qualities. Both Max and Kavi were textbook assholes.

Still, there would be time to probe that particular line of questioning in a second. The ball was back in her court now, and social conventions dictated an answer.

“Honestly, things have been looking up! I mean, I don’t want to drown you in details, but things with Sunshine and me have been amazing. I know, I’m sorry, more people around you that are falling for others, but it’s… it’s so different right now. You remember that first time we were discussing Austen, and realized just how much we had in common? It’s like that feeling for the first time in such a long time. Like I actually feel like my life is actually going the way I want it, and not the way my parents want it…” Shawna let out a huge sigh in bringing up that topic. “Speaking of which, now that they are back, I’m probably going to need a few more getaway days at your place, you know? I mean, I literally can’t do anything at home right now. Not with anyone. It’s amazing Jack was able to perform as well as he did to get me out of there tonight. My dad was going full Nazi Inquisitor on him.”

The more Shawna talked, the more Chrissie’s mask started to drop. Her bubbly demeanor turned dark, with a heavy, perturbed aura around her, and a sullen pout. The first account was, once again, she was hearing another friend’s happiness in the love department. While she loved to see it, she hated how it made her feel. Chrissie found it hard to accept that Sunshine gave Shawna the happiness she was seeking. Before Christmas break, Kellie broke her friend’s heart and whose bed did she go to? Her’s. The second account was the plea for a place to stay, which was genuine and sweet, but only caused Chrissie to think about the fact that she might have a place to stay with her date of the night, who she didn’t know completely well like some of these other girls that had his tongue deep in their throats. This whole dilemma showed how Stella wanted nothing to do with her, because now she was ‘better than her’ and wished her to fuck off back to Scotland.

Grinding her teeth, Chris’ hold on Shawna unintentionally tightened. She could choose to watch her words carefully, and filter, but honestly, why? Shawna didn’t deserve that and Chrissie shouldn’t take her problems out on her, “I would love for you to come over, but… I have no place anymore. So, like, no getaways for you!” Releasing her friend, she guzzled down her second drink in clear frustration, before forcibly placing the cup on the table, “It’s because of that stupid fucking bitch and her sudden change because omg Paris!”

“Stupid fucking bitch?” Shawna was a little confused before remembering that there was only one person that Paris could refer to. It was funny how quickly the entire roster of King’s Academy could be reduced to one or two people with just one word. “Stella? What did she do? Do I have to do something? I know people in West Palm Beach now, I can have some pretty nasty things done to her and/or her possessions if you want.”

It was an empty threat. Shawna hadn’t been to West Palm Beach in forever. There hadn’t been any need to visit the seedier side of the waterway with Kellie Anne and Sunshine in her life… and even Chrissie for that brief moment in time. A moment she wasn’t sure she wanted to acknowledge just because she treasured having the friendship intact after that experiment. But, it was important for Shawna to let Chrissie know that even if there were some things going on, she still had her back. After what she learned from her brief reunion with Aaliyah, she had to put some extra value on those who had seen something worth friending in her back when she was a soulless academic robot.

“More importantly, are you OK? Do you want to talk about it?” Shawna motioned to the claimed table that Jack had abandoned. It was still unoccupied, so if Chrissie wanted to sit down, she had the option.

“Yes, Stella. No, it’s okay.” Chrissie shook her head. If she stooped to her cousin's level and let her ruin her night, it would only make Stella happy. There was no way in hell that Chrissie would give her the satisfaction. “She should win a award for holding the longest grudge.” Rummaging through her clutch, she took out her phone, deciding to reroute the conversation and disregard the offer of taking a seat and having a heart to heart, “SELFIE!” She’d post how much fun she was having with her friend on Insta so Stella could SUCK it.

Well, that answered that question. Chrissie wanted to go the photo route and Shawna could at the very least oblige. She leaned in close, slightly smiling, unsure what to do with her hands but ultimately keeping one down as she was content to let her face say all she needed to say. The other wrapped around Chrissie as if to show that yes these two people were close enough to allow for this much physical contact. It was easier to do now than it was before. Plus, if her parents went snooping on social media, it was proof that things were as platonic as ever. At least platonic enough for them. They didn’t need to know anything else right now.

Once she was confident Chrissie had clicked the button enough times to get a perfect selfie, Shawna released her arm “There you go. A shot of perfection… I think,” she said, unsure of just how far her picture game had come in the past year. “Hey, I’m sorry I haven’t been… you know, in the frame for you lately. Kinda been focused on dealing with the shit at home and trying to figure out how I’m going to explain things to my parents and it’s really stressing me out, to be honest.”

Surprised at the sudden apology, Chrissie raised an eyebrow. Keeping her mind at the task at hand, she looked down at the phone, deciding to multitask. Putting a cute filter on the picture, she added a caption: Rough day, wonderful night. As she responded to her friend, she posted the pic on her instagram without any hesitation, “Babe, you gotta’ focus on you.” She shrugged, honestly not offended of the lack of support from Shawna’s end, like she was with Stella, who was blood related and should’ve been there for her.

“I should be the one saying sorry.” The fact that Chrissie was apologizing for anything meant more than most people realized. She was a prideful, arrogant princess. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to notice that. Still, she was able to admit to her faults, showing somewhere deep down, she cared. “I’ve been caught up with… Jason. I haven’t been checking up on you either.” After pocketing her phone back in her clutch, she grabbed her friend’s hand and gave it a gentle squeeze, able to calm her abrupt anger about Stella, even if momentarily. “I’m happy for you, really. And I do hope Sunshine gives you the kindness, and acceptance, you deserve.” It seemed that the alcohol was starting to hit the lightweight because while to her she sounded eloquent, her words did slur and the world started to move around her.

It meant a lot for Shawna to hear from Chrissie. She was going to need as many allies as she could muster in the coming months, and the fact that her drama queen friend still had her back, even after a time of ambivalence between two, it was huge. Still, Shawna didn’t want the situation to devolve into one sappy sorry fest that ends with them crying into the punch bowl. No one needed that.

Speaking of punch, Shawna had finished what Chrissie had given her and was debating whether she should go for more or sneak off and enjoy some more of her own private reserves. It was clear the punch was stronger than Shawna thought the way Chrissie kind of mashed acceptance and deserve together. She knew Chrissie had way better diction than that. She needed it for the stage. Still, she was happy for the mutually beneficial squeeze of the hand. The assurance of the contact provided to the taller girl and the balance provided to the shorter one served both well.

“Thank you, Chrissie. That means a lot. And hey! I know you’ll find someone that is way better than Jason could ever dream to be. Who knows? They may be in here right now…” She looked to the dance floor and tried to see if she could spot an example, but all she saw was Kavi looking like a chewed up wad of bubble gum. Ewww, no thank you. “Maybe they’re just hiding. But hey, things will work out.” I mean, I managed somehow, right? Maybe not completely, but still.

“I tink… I think I dun need love. Not now. Not eva!” It was starting to become clear that Chrissie’s liquor consumption was taking over. She turned her attention, as well as her body, to look at what was drawing Shawna in. However, before her eyes could find Kavi in the crowd, Stella shouted Carter’s name.

Chrissie’s attention immediately darted in that direction. Seeing her cousin’s face for the first time at this dance caused the thespian to scowl. The ideas sped through her head on what she could do to be petty. Petty now, petty later. She’d do something upsetting, that’s for sure! Like grab the whole punch bowl and spill it all over that gaudy green dress. Or, or, or when Stella got inevitably married, Chrissie would make sure to crash it, outshine her, and steal the show. Purposely aim to get kicked out and then laugh in her face. “Stuped betch.”

Crossing her arms, clearly upset, she went back to what Shawna had her sights on. Resting on Kavi’s face, as he left Ariel’s side, sporting a charming smile and heading straight to the dance floor, she bit her lip in shame. She contemplated her unhealthy anger and why it was so easy for Stella to get under skin. She played back the car ride in her head and their little musical duet together. He was having fun. That was good. She should do so too. That was their original plan. Have some fun and start some mayhem. To not care about what everyone else thought and just say fuck it. He was doing a far more successful job than she was Frowning, she turned to Shawna, pulling her into an intimate embrace, “I go pee, babeh. Start fire, or slap butt for me.”

If Shawna hadn’t lived the life she had over the past eight months, she wouldn’t believe it was possible to fall down the sobriety ladder as quickly as Chrissie just did. It was like Shawna’s entire flask of tequila hit Chrissie all at once. In fact, Shawna should probably be thankful that her time in the underbelly off Palm Beach had built up her tolerance as much as it did. Poor Chrissie must be swimming right now.

Or drowning, if the embrace Shawna found herself in was anything to go off of. Even when things got… steamy between the two, she never remembered Chrissie being in this kind of state. Still, at least she was aware enough of herself to know that she had to use the facilities. Shawna returned the embrace and held Chrissie close enough to know she cared. “I’ll do my best, Chris. If you need any help or anything, just text me, OK? I want to make sure you don’t get trapped in the bathroom for the rest of the night.”

“Yep! Okiedokie. I got chu on speed.” Letting go of her friend, Chrissie dismissed herself by doing finger guns, before prancing off, making sure to go around Stella, unnoticed. Or trying to, at least. Her drunk self thought the best route was through the dance floor, but if anything, it was like pushing through a mosh pit and everyone was so, so sweaty. “‘Cuse me!”

As her friend darted off to make use of the facilities, Shawna continued to look out over the throng of people, wondering just where all her other partners had wandered off to. It would be pretty difficult to lose a guy like Jack, or her beautiful girlfriend, but it appeared it happened. That new guy, he had taken over proceedings, making the floor his own private karaoke bar. Well, that's one way to get everyone's attention... The sighting of Kavi on the dance floor made her wonder how Ariel was doing. Maybe she should try and find her vibrantly-haired friend...

Eventually, Chrissie left the ballroom and rushed to the bathroom. She didn’t actually have to pee. While she was a lightweight, she knew breaking the seal would only make the rest of her night a pain because she’d have to pee every five minutes. It wasn’t that time of the night to suffer. Instead, she held herself using the sink and looked at her face in the mirror.

As unfocused as her eyesight was, she saw how flawless her makeup was, yet how sad her eyes came across. Turning the sink on, she wet her hands and patted her face. “You. Actress. Act like it!” She had been so invested in her conversation with Shawna that she wasn’t paying attention to how quickly she was drinking. There was no need to repeat the homecoming after party. A night she couldn’t even remember.

Get a grip, Chrissie.
