Angela stood away from Bakuto, keeping her fists up. Her legs felt as if they would have in at any second from exhaustion and pain, but she was still going. She about hardened her skin out of pure instinct at the sound of Bakuto's decree, and as he pulled his fist back she had raised her arms to block whatever he was about to throw at her, but nothing happened. Angela looked past her arms to see Bakuto collapse onto his back, defeated from pure exhaustion. And his words assured her that he was down and out. The crowds of people watching the event cheered loudly at the sight of the winner.

"I... I won? I... I actually won?" Angela was slightly shocked that she had done it. She looked around at the cheering audience, was this how it felt to win? She turned her attention back to Bakuto and walked over to him, kneeling down next to him. She winced in pain from kneeling down but she didn't care much. "That... Was a fun fight... I'm glad that I got to fight someone as strong as you." she said with a smile as she offered her hand to him.

An incredible fight...!

Niko stood watching, his arms crossed as he waited for it to start, always studying form and fighting style with his eyes. He was, as a sniper, quite good at following targets to make sure that he could predict their movements and take them down in the line of duty. Honestly, he wished it were him that was up there, right now, but he admired the girl's spirit. Angela had as much a reason to win as he did, it seemed. Maybe he'd get to hear it some time. Maybe he'd get to even hear why Bakuto came to this tournament himself. Who knows? Niko found that he rather liked these poeple. They were a real breath of fresh air.

Anyway, the final battle started, and Bakuto was taking no chances with Angela at all! 'He must've been just as impressed by our battles as I was of him.' When they all had their decisive victories - Lee over Michael, Bakuto over Lee, himself over Rica, and Angela over him - these were clear indicators of how the battles were playing out, showing some real skill. Angela must've managed to read him well, and it was small wonder, because apparently the prize-fighter girl was exceptional at taking his and delivering back. She was hit, but bouncing back, and she showed a technique to keep her defenses as strong as stone in the face of Bakuto, though he'd hurt her with his swift techniques.

They were pulling out all the stops, and Niko really saw why his speed counted for nothing. Angela was a monolith, unmovable. It was intense! She took hit after hit, and Bakuto - though physically healthy - was wearing down. Impressive! 'If she'd joined the army, I think Athena would like her too.' Not that she would. As the fighting continued, Niko joined in the chant, himself. He wanted Angela to win. She put her heart and soul into this. Either one of them had what it took to become champion, but he was pretty sure that she could pull it off. After the fight with him? Oh yeah!

And then...she did it!

Bakuto was preparing to throw another punch, when...he suddenly fell back, having lost his balance! He couldn't move, or was too weak to do so. The man seemed to struggle to do so for a second, but conceded that he was patently unable to. He was being a good sport about it, which Niko felt was at least proper enough. Much the same way he didn't have any regret for his own fight for not holding back, Bakuto was prepared to acknowledge officially that he'd lost, and this honestly surprised Angela. The audience cheered, Niko along with them, and here the two drained fighters appeared to be talking. Niko smirked and leapt over some of the audience to the nearby tournament staff, before holding out his hand.

"Gentlemen, if I may."

A second later, Senzu Beans in hand, Niko soon joined the three and gave them both the beans. Bakuto kind of needed a direct deposit, which was not a problem. He gave Angela a friendly smile now.

"I'm not a career fighter, like you are, but I could definitely get to like this. I'll be challenging you again, though I'm obviously gonna have to learn to duck."

Papaya Island, Saturday, July 16th, Dawn

The sun rose in the distance, and as it did so it cast its morning light over the shadows of the waning night. On the edge of a bluff overlooking the shore, a young man sat beneath a nearby tree. He was facing the East, as if waiting to greet the rising sun. He was cross-legged, appearing to be in a meditative state. But just as the morning sunlight washed over him, he slowly began to write something down on a parchment. The note was short, and read thusly:

Night gives way to dawn
The Morning Sun warms the shore
We greet the new day

It was a haiku, of all things. Composing them was said to be an effective way to ensure clarity of the mind, and it partnered well as a hobby alongside the art of meditation. The greater clarity a mind has, the more easily it can be at ease with itself. At least, that was what the young man was taught by his great-grandfather before the latter's passing. But soon the young man opened his eyes, sensing someone's arrival without any need to look in their direction, "Good. You're on time." he said, voice low and his tone sounding almost eerily peaceful.

The man who had approached was a bit older, and wore a business suit. He even carried a briefcase with him to complete the utterly stereotypical image. He looked somewhat annoyed, "You picked a strange time and place for a meeting like this, you know that?" his apparent irritation was reflected by his tone.

"There's no one here. It's quiet. It's peaceful. It's private. What more do you need?" the young man's response kept the same tone, appearing to indicate that he was not bothered by the other's manners, "You should try this yourself some time, you look like you need it."

The businessman huffed, taking another step forward and noticing the parchment with the haiku scripted onto it, "I'll pass. I've got too much on my plate to waste time sitting under trees and writing poems. But let's get to business." he opened the briefcase and retrieved a folder from it before handing it over to the younger man, "That's your target. Everything you need to know about him is included there."

The file appeared to be a dossier. The Target's name was included, as was his go-to alias: Niko Renzo, aka Eclipse. According to the dossier he was in armed services, as a sniper and stealth operations specialist. And evidently he was no slouch in martial arts combat either. The dossier went on to give accounts of Renzo's ops, painting a picture of a sniper that appeared to grow increasingly dissatisfied with a soldier's pay and thus turned to selling intelligence as something of a side gig. "Strange... isn't this the sort of thing the government is meant to deal with?"

The suit cleared his throat before answering, "That's classified. The point is, your target is guilty of treason. That falls well within your perimeter, does it not?"

The dossier snapped shut, "Death comes for everyone. Me? I'm just the messenger." he handed the folder back to the man and he stood from his position.

"...is that a yes?" the suit held out the briefcase, which he revealed contained a large amount of Zeni in it, "That's half, the other half comes upon completion, per your terms."

The younger man didn't say another word. Instead he silently took the briefcase from the older man and calmly began to walk away. The meeting, as far as he was concerned, was concluded. He had only one destination after this, and that was the Tournament Grounds. Hopefully he would make it in time to sign up. But even if he didn't, the plan was clear. The dossier directed him to this Tournament as the place where Niko Renzo would be. Of course, assassinating him there would be foolish, but if the target was competing then what better way to observe him and study his skill level than as a member of the spectating audience?

Later that Evening

The World Martial Arts Tournament had reached its conclusion. The final bout was dangerously close to ending in a tie, but it seemed the girl had just managed to eke out a win over her opponent. Most of the matches early on were nothing special, in fact Han only truly became interested when it was narrowed down to the final 16. Of course, he'd been watching the matches of a certain someone more closely than others. That someone had made it all the way to the Semi-Finals before being eliminated by the girl who went on to become the Champion. A few of the unrelated matches piqued Han's interest. For instance, Angela's match against Ace, as while most of the viewing audience were shocked and awed by its conclusion Han remained seemingly unsurprised by it. From her stance to the way she moved, it was obvious to him that Ace was entirely self-taught, no formal instruction whatsoever. As for where that apparent strength of hers came from, he couldn't say. But her eventual concession seemed to him at least to be a sign that she very likely didn't have control over it in some fashion and may well have been afraid of seriously hurting someone.

Another fighter whose matches were interesting was the other finalist, Bakuto. His speed was clearly unmatched, as evidenced by the appearance of his Afterimages. In fact it was seeing that technique in action that made Han all the more disappointed that he missed the sign up deadline, because he was almost certain he could have countered that move fairly easily with his own technique. Oh well, there was no sense dwelling on it or obsessing over it. Perhaps it could happen at the next World Tournament? One could always hope, anyway.

And then there was Niko Renzo. This was the competitor whose matches Han watched the most closely. Early on it almost seemed like Niko was having to make a conscious effort to adjust his strikes so that they would be non-lethal. This made a lot of sense, given his background. Combat techniques in the military were designed first and foremost to stop opponents swiftly and efficiently, even if that meant potentially killing them. In fact, Han speculated that had he managed to sign up for this Tournament, he himself may have actually had a similar issue with toning down the lethality of his own techniques. But by the time Niko had made it to the Semi-Finals it became most clear to Han. His target was enjoying himself here, and doing so genuinely. And that fact struct Han as quite odd. If Niko was really after only money as the dossier claimed, then where was this sudden passion and sportsmanship coming from?

It seems I'm going to need to learn a bit more about you before I make a move. And in the world of martial arts there is only one way for a fighter to truly gauge who another is...

Han had decided that as soon as an opportunity presented itself, he would present himself directly to Niko Renzo... and challenge him to a match.

The Grand Festival

The crowd's roar could be heard well after the fight between Angela and Bakuto concluded. The two of them, now rejuvinated from senzu beans, walked with Niko back to the fighter's building. There they found Lee standing near a woman with grey hair but an otherwise healthy body. The woman wore a long red skirt and a white blouse. She somehow looked ready for a business meeting or a party, at the same time.

She greeted the three fighters as they approached and stood near Lee. "Thank you all for a wonderful show! Some of you may recognize me, but I'd understand if you don't. My name is Pan, and I'm the granddaughter of the legendary Mr. Satan, the longest reigning champion in tournament history. I even won the title twice myself. So no, Ms. Angela, you are not the first woman champion, I'm sorry to say." The woman's confident smile was heartwarming as she continued to give her speech. "That was quite a few years ago now, I'm afraid. I still keep up with my training, as much as my aging body will allow, but I no longer compete on stage. These days, I am the silent chairwoman of the World Martial Art's Tournament. And it is my solemn duty to let you all know that your day has not ended quite yet. This old tournament is filled with traditions, including the post celebratory festival that will start in less than an hour."

Pan watched the reactions of the four fighters and gave a look of understanding. "I know, it's a drag. Do you think I want to be wearing this skirt? No way. I've never grown out of being a tomboy, but alas, it's all part of it. Now, of course, those fans out there would love to see all four of you, but as long as my two finalists here make an appearance, that will do."

Lee stepped forward, bowing in respect. "So I may leave then?"

"Yes, but I would encourage you to-"

"I'm sorry." He interrupted, bowing once more. He then disappeared on the spot, using a serious burst of speed. Of course, surrounded by fighters on his level, they would have seen him run away, had they been in fighting mode and expecting the sudden exit.

"Well then," Pan sighed. "That's the quickest one a semifinalist has disappeared from being in the festival. As for the rest of you, there are showering rooms and a changing rooms filled with clothes from all over the world. I encourage you to find something that suits the occasion and your own style. One of the tournament staff can help you pick out your look if you like."

With that, two women and a man stepped out from the corner of the room. They wore extravagant yet elegant clothing: colorful dresses on the ladies and a fine suit on the man.

The tournament was over, but the event itself was not. After he had helped the other two, they wwere met by an older woman who looked to be in excellent shape, despite the age, the way Michael Miocic did. She was there to congratulate them, introducing herself as the granddaughter of Mr. Satan, a man who Niko's father had said that 'He was suppose to have destroyed a very powerful enemy to the Earth after becoming World Champion.'. Many records of that time were lost or - Niko suspected - classified, as those times reflected a bizarre chaos that was difficult to explain. Still, one thing that IS known was that Mr. Satan was indeed World Martial Arts Champion for a while, and that's about all Niko knew because he'd seen a commercial on TV of a curiously afro'd strongman who looked a bit silly to him as a kid.

Out of respect for the aging martial artist, Niko refrained from commenting on this, and instead just greeted her normally. Because now...in a funny way...they were equals. It was a difficult thing to wrap around his head, this crazy kind of prestige in the martial artist's world. He wasn't sure he was ready for it. He was a low rank in the army, just a Corporal, but here... He felt the need to humble it, to not make it a big fuss. He couldn't allow this to color him. Maybe if he had become Champion, he'd settle into the role, but he had made mistakes along the way and Angela had really proven himself in his eyes, Bakuto too. These were good people, and perhaps he'd see them later and-

Wait, what?

A festival? Fancy dress? Fans from all over the- No no no no no no no... He wasn't ready for that. Lee had left because he had no reason to stay and no-doubt didn't like occasions like this to begin with - a very serious man, him - but Niko felt intimidated by the whole affair. He wasn't the finalist. He wasn't ready for the limelight. He couldn't do that. This power and skill may be impressive, but...that wasn't his purpose here, merely a side-effect. He shook his head at the elder lady.

"I'm sorry, Miss Satan, but...I can't. A long-anticipated anxiety has reared its ugly head, and I must retreat for now. Thank you for having me, and I'll do better next time."

He turned to Bakuto and Angela.

"Live it up, you two. You earned it. If you ever wanna talk or fight, I'm in the army database somewhere."

And with that, he left. However, he did so at walking speed until he was out of their respective sights. Pan, who probably had senses beyond that of normal people, probably felt him speed up after he turned a corner. He wasn't kidding about that anxiety. He had to go, get out of all of this, get away... Niko ran and jumped and did not stop until he was out on the beach somewhere, trying to calm himself. He stood under a full moon, now, watching the waves come up the sands. It helped, a little. He wanted to call Athena, who would probably reassure him while in a mellow sort of mood from a few beers. His teacher was capable of great things, and after seeing what people here were capable of, he wondered about enemies with that kind of ability. The foe that his father mentioned, the rumored victory of Mr. Satan... What was it? Maybe he would ask her some time, but...not tonight.

Tonight, he felt both over-and-underwhelmed by the whole situation. He was a little disappointed in his own performance against Angela, but then Angela proved to be very hearty an opponent, able to stand up to Bakuto's relentless assault. They were all different from each other, and they had beaten all the other competition. Huh... That's weird. Why was he thinking of them as a trio? Lee was just as good as any of them, having beaten the former Champion and fought Bakuto himself. Maybe it was because the solitary warrior was only ever close, it seemed, to Rica...who might've been trying to kill him. That was a very near thing. Some apparently take these alot more seriously than others. In any case, he was both proud of his accomplishment, but also...strangely nervous of what that all meant. The implications of being able to tear apart solid stone or kill people with his bare hands was a bit much.

I need better control of myself, more careful precision in my actions. As a sniper, I have immaculate control of a gun, but this is far different. I have this level of ability now, and it will probably grow like it did with Athena, and I need to be ready for it if I'm ever to use it against the MMC. Even if didn't win, I have a goal and an opportunity. I have a chance...but I need to have the courage to seize it and the will to control it!

Here, Niko decided that he should at least get in contact with his brother, but strangely...he couldn't reach him. That's odd...

As the post-Tournament festivities prepared to begin, an elder woman introduced herself to the four semifinalists. Mr. Satan... the name certainly rang familiar to anyone who studied the history of the World Tournament, as Han certainly had. And yet his was not the only noteworthy name associated with the Tournament. Before Satan's time, there was another Champion, an enigmatic old man known only as Jackie Chun. Though he had only won the championship a single time, that championship battle was recorded as one of the greatest in the Tournament's history. And yet, despite returning to defend his title, the old man simply forfeited his match early on during the semifinals, and stranger still was never seen or heard from again. Perhaps he desired a quiet retirement? Han supposed that only the old man himself would've ever known the answer to that question.

After Ms. Pan's speech, two of the four semifinalists appeared in quite a rush to leave. And unfortunately, Han's target was one of them. While Lee vanished in a burst of speed, Renzo instead walked calmly away. At least until he was out of sight, then he was gone at a greater speed after that. Perfect, approaching the target privately was going to be the most ideal way for Han to move forward with his plan. And so, he too slipped out of the festival, and was able to do so with no fuss to boot as he was not among the important guests present. Despite the head start, Han was able to pick up Renzo's trail and followed him to the shore. His target was on the beach, seemingly in deep thought with himself.

Looking up, Han took in the view of the full moon. Part of him was reminded of his meditation that morning, at a similar beach while briefly under the light of the moon. This time, it seemed ominously reversed, as a dark night approached instead of a hopeful new day. In fact, a new haiku made itself known in Han's thoughts. But as he had no implements on his person to write it down, the next best thing was to verbalize it.

"The Sun lays to rest
The Night Sky envelopes All
ruled now, by The Moon"

That, of course, would no doubt tip Niko off to Han's presence. But, Han was never planning an ambush anyway, so this would have to do for an introduction, "Forgive me." he said, offering a bow, "When a haiku comes to me in moments of peace, sometimes I can't help myself but to share it. It helps to clear the mind, you know, keeps you at peace." he maintained a polite tone in his voice, and warm expression on his face. He wanted this meeting to be amicable, at the very least until he learned what he needed to learn from it, "Ah, right, I forget my manners. I am Wu Han. I watched you fight in the Tournament. I tried to sign up myself, but alas, I arrived too late. I hope you'll forgive my forwardness, Niko Renzo, but I followed you in here in the hopes you would honor me with a match." Han said nothing more, and from here allowed his actions to speak for him instead.

Han entered his Shinigami Stance, likely not one that Riko or most people had ever seen unless they were well versed in martial arts folklore. He appeared to make a lunge forward to strike, but what would have been a torso-aimed kicked instead stopped mid way - revealing itself to merely be a feint - so that Han could push himself back a few inches, tightening his guard and keeping his footwork quick and light as a feather.

He was just checking on the connection on his phone - yup, four bars and satallite backup - when he heard an unfamiliar voice. The instinct of a soldier and that of a sniper who hates the disturbance of his peace and quiet had Niko turning on a dime, not entirely relaxing since this newcomer caught him at a bad moment. When he apologized, the young sniper did calm down. It was just this man's way of engaging a flair for the dramatics, it seemed. Well, there was nothing wrong with that, he supposed. The timing was a bit strange, though, finding someone about his age coming up to him. After all, he was neither the semi-finalist, nor the champion, and this didn't look like someone from the military either. In fact, he looked like a proper martial artist, and he was definitely into zen and the art of the haiku.

"Not really one of my pasttimes. Poetry, I mean. More of a novel-reader, myself."

Or compilations books. As long as it told a story, that was more a format for him. And he was aware that some poems were stories, like The Raven, but what he meant was chapter and paragraph over stanza and verse. In any case, the newcomer explained his presence before him. Wu Han had apparently come to enter the tournament, but didn't make it in time for the sign-up. That was a shame, but...wait a minute, he wanted to WHAT?

"Hold on, why do you wa- HEY!"

Niko was suddenly on guard, not because of the request put to him, but because the one asking it didn't wait for an answer and obviously wasn't taking 'No' as a possibility! All at once, Wu had taken an unusual stance and thrust forward with a kick-

-but he was going to be surprised afterwards that the kick never reached him or the hands that he had readied to grab and effectively force a man to twist or spin down to the ground by controlling their motions via the ankle. This was going to be...a little different, it seemed.

Han vs. Niko

The battle between Niko and Han started off with a stall, a fake out that didn't put Niko off his guard. Then it happened again, and again, and again. Han moved like a killer, but when it came right down to it, he would abandon his attack. Despite Niko's best efforts, he couldn't get close enough to counter attack.

The trained soldier knew one thing though. This was no matter to take lightly. This man was a trained killer...

The beginning was a test, more than anything else. Han was looking to measure up his opponent by taking stock of how he reacted to potential attacks coming from various angles. But this wasn't something Han could keep up forever, he could sense an ever-so-slight difference between the two of them, though he did not know if Renzo was aware of this difference. If Han wanted things to go smoothly, then he needed to make sure every move counted, and that not a single motion or movement was put to waste. With that in mind, he came in for one last feint attack, a chop that would have otherwise been aimed for the back of the neck had it not been backed out of. Instead Han maneuvered himself in front of Niko and willingly allowed his footwork to slow a bit.

"You know what you're doing. Good. Little wonder you made it to the Semifinals." By this point Han had allowed himself to stand still. Gone was his light footwork. Instead, ever-so-subtly, he had shifted his stance in a slightly different direction. His feet were more firmly planted on the ground and his guard appeared to be even more fortified than it previously was. The art of Defense was a two-sided coin, one of Evasion and one of Guarding. Han had previously just showcased the former side to that coin, and now it was time to showcase the latter. He readied himself, not to dodge, but to catch whatever blow came his way like an unbending oak.

These feints... They were testing his reflexes, his reactions. He was on guard, maybe a little on edge. Was he overreacting or reacting just enough? It was hard to tell. What did Wu Han want from him? Niko had no idea who he was or what he did, apart from his name and martial arts fighting. Was he just trying to see what he was capable of, or was it more than that? No answers, no ideas, and yet there was this uneasy feeling that it was somehow a little more about him, in particular, unless Wu just didn't fancy his chances against Lee. The other man slowed down and spoke up again, complimenting him, and then changed his tact. Instead of being ready to take flight, like Niko would, he was now standing his ground, looking more prepared.

Wait, like Angela? Maybe not a technique, but he definitely looks more secure, although he HAS made a mistake...

He looked prepared to be the rock that breaks the crashing waves, but there was a problem in where he was standing: It was loose sand. It affected traction for both of them, but more-so for trying to keep still when a force is acting upon you than to be getting a move on. He wouldn't be able to necessarily stop himself if he was hit hard enough. The question was more about his balance. Would he be able to keep it in this case, or would he lose it and falter when he needed to stay upright and in control. The fact that they were basically surrounded by sand also meant that Niko could do other things, but he didn't want to bring techniques into it before it was necessary.

What he DID do was decide that the terrain and his speed could be put to good use here. Suddenly, Niko vanished. From the average person's perspective, anyway. Wu might've been able to follow it, or perhaps he was just more focused on enduring an attack. Except...Niko wasn't attacking. Not exactly. He wasn't going to try to hurt him, per se. In fact, the proper term might be to hurtle him, to throw Wu Han via grabbing and pulling him at speed, so that the force of his momentum would drag him off of his feet and toss him at the lapping waves of the ocean when he came to a stop at the ocean's edge. Only the landing could cause any harm. Niko was inflicting very little himself, in this case.

Han vs. Niko

Han stood and waited as Niko charged. His guard was up, but it did little to stop Niko's attack, because he wasn't looking to break that guard. He was after something else...

And it worked! Han went flying out into the water. With a big splash, he landed in the water. It would take time to swim back, time that Niko could use to plan his next move or perhaps... run away?

A wise strategist once said that the battle plan was always the first casualty of any engagement. An oversimplification, to be sure, but the logic was sound and the idea behind it was not without well deserved merit. This was one of those times. Han's initial plan would not survive this particular clash, but that in itself did not immediately mean failure. Yet another wise man once reasoned that there were occasional moments in time when one had to make a split-second decision, or else that moment - and the opportunity it provided - would be lost forever. That wise man also happened to be Han's great-grandfather, and like most everything else he learned from him, Han took that lesson to heart. This, he felt, was one such moment described by his great-grandfather's advice. A split-second decision was made, one that would decide the success or failure of this skirmish.

While Han had returned the dossier to the representative at the meeting, what that man hadn't realized was that 3 of the pages from that dossier had been slipped out of the folder. Those pages were now in Han's possession, and in the fraction of a second that it took Han to realize that his footing slipped, he acted as quickly on the draw as he possibly could. A hand slipped into his Gi, grabbed the three pages and let them fly from his possession as his body flew back. He went out into the water, was even submerged for a moment.

Now to end this, hopefully my ploy has done its job.

The ploy, in retrospect at least, was a rather simple one. Those 3 pages contained accounts of alleged transactions involving Niko, and the sale of military information to foreign entities. The way Han saw it, one of two things was likely to happen. If those accounts were indeed genuine, then most likely Niko would grab the pages and run or he would wait for Han to return to shore and attempt to get more information from him, possibly even try to silence him. Or the other possibility, should Han's suspicions prove true, was that Niko's curiosity would be piqued and he would similarly stay around to question Han for further information. No matter which outcome happened, Han would have been able to learn all he needed to decide on his next course of action for the contract.

Han had swam a short distance before surfacing. He walked upright on the shore, no longer maintaining any battle stance. If Niko had stuck around, this at least would be enough to signal an end to their brief fight. A smile would be Han's face, as he continued to maintain the warm and friendly vibe he had begun this encounter with, "I suppose I owe you some answers now, don't I?" he would ask, provided that Niko had not run away and was still present.

I gotcha!

In his sudden burst of speed, he managed to grab Wu Han, pull him off his feet, and thrust him into the waiting ocean. He made a big splash as he hit the waves, and Niko felt a certain satifaction at the accomplishment. 'That was where I went wrong back there. I was so focused on fighting Angela that I didn't think about the possibility of a ring-out.' Every single opponent he'd fought in the tournament had been knocked out, up until his fight with her. The possibility had never even occurred to him, even though it was completely viable. Maybe it was due to the fact that he'd wanted to fight the now-Champion, that he wanted to see what she had, and didn't want to disappoint her after the weird forfeit by Ace. Well...no matter. What's done is done, and what he learned from the fight he lost and the one he was in now would no-doubt aid his growth and understanding of the martial artist's world.

He knew that Wu would be fine after he hit the water. Braced as he was against attack, he'd be perfectly fine and recover in no time. That said, Niko was kind of surprised that - during the toss - some possessions flew free of the man's outfit. 'They call that a Gi, right? I think so...' He caught the things out of mid-air, so they wouldn't land in the water. They were all papers, which would be ruined if that occurred. He was just organizing them for the man when he...he saw his name on one, on all of them! What the hell was this? These papers all painted him as some kind of soldier of fortune, a mercenary and information-broker selling to the highest bidder. These accounts, these accusations of heinous crimes, this outright falsified data... What did they think he was? A dirty government hatchman? A war profiteer? A bonded hitman? What the hell? Who did this, and why? Niko turned to face the returning Wu Han, his face operating under the guidance of the WTF Foundation, as that was his expression.

The match was over, but clearly something else had started. This meeting was not a coincidence. The other man was now making his way back ashore in high spirits. He saw Niko with the papers and the general look about him and asked if perhaps now was a good time for some answers. He gave them man a nod.

"That would be preferred. Who are you, really? And why're you trying to frame me? Or was your aim something a little different?"

His eyes had narrowed suddenly at that last question, as he was starting to put it together. A strong fighter with a desire to see what he was made of...with that in his pockets...might have something a bit more final in mind for him, assuming he was not the one responsible for such information...but rather the recipient. Had he just found a bonded hitman, himself?

After everything was said and done, Angela was brought back to the fighters building with Bakuto and Niko. Lee was waiting there, along with a seemingly elderly but very healthy lady. She introduced herself as Pan, granddaughter of longest reigning champ, Mr. Satan, and a two time title holder herself. Angela was beyond impressed that she was meeting with such a person, she was practically a tournament legend. She mentioned an extravagant festival was to take place in a bit and that she wanted them to come. Lee and Niko though had other ideas, Lee practically booking it out of the room after apologizing and Niko just left casual, though Angela could feel that he took off quickly after he was out of view. Now it was just her and Bakuto.

She looked at Bakuto and shrugged before looking back at Pan. "It would be an honor to participate in the festival. But... I'm kinda in your shoes here, Ma'am... I'm not much for wearing dresses, never have been." She explained as she put her hands into the pockets of her hoodie. "But... As this is an important event... I guess I can bear with it." she said as she gave a sigh. "What do you think of this, Bakuto?" she asked him.

Bakuto

The End of the Finals and The Festival Begins!
Location: World Martial Arts Tournament, Planet Earth
Time: Saturday, July 16th, 2500

After the fight, Bakuto had let Niko and Angela help him get back to his feet even accepted the senzu bean given to him. He stood up carefully as he went from having neary no energy left to move to his recovered was a bit uneasy at first. He didnt hurt bad but his pride did take quite a hit from the fight but he felt stronger from the experience he had from the tournament. He stood in the ring with the strongest fighter and gave it his all. Bakuto gave the crowd a bow then his opponent out of respect then went to the back initially after the fight before the festival,

Moments Later At the Festival

At the festival Bakuto dreaded even showing up. He strongly disliked social events like these. Social gatherings where people dressed fancy pretending they are high class or trying to show they are better socially then others. Bakuto met this woman along with the others Pan. He had heard her name before or at least the name of her grand father Hercule. He was a legendary fighter, it was hard not to hear about him on his way to this tournament.

She offered to have her officials get them what suits them. Before he could speak Niko was gone and so was Lee, the semi finalists left, Bakuto wish he could leave but he made it to the finals. His burden that he created for himself by his own success. Then Angela spoke before he could then asked him what did he think Bakuto without a second thought with a rather serious, "I'm not wearing a suit. I'll wear my own fighting gear if I am allowed, but I wont wear a suit. The fancy suits isnt for me, I am a fighter not a businessman or some sort of rich tycoon type and I will present myself as such. I see this is an important event, and my clothing that I wear is important to me, and that all that matters."

His attitude quickly dropped and he smiled then said cheerfully, "But that's just me. This is a party still and one should celebrate. Especially you. Champ! I mean you just won the whole tournament that is worth plenty of celebrating before people start lining back up to fight you again for you to see how they match up to the new World Martial Arts Tournament champion. Maybe after a few round of drinks, maybe a lot of few rounds of drinks this kind of party wont be so weird." His cheerful energetic tone he had during the tournament was back as he was finally accepting his loss. In the end he was still a finalist even if he was just the runner up and he had a bit of pride in that.

It worked. Just as Han planned, the ploy was enough to keep Niko from leaving. The look of utter confusion on his face served as the final nail in the coffin. Han's suspicions were correct after all. Niko was clearly not guilty of any of the crimes alleged by the pages of the dossier, and so whatever intention Han had of killing him was gone in an instant. Assassin though he may, he only targeted a certain type of individual, and Niko was clearly not it.

"I hadn't lied. My name really is Wu Han, and my intention really was to challenge you to a match." he had said, offering a quick bow, "But I did withhold the full story from you. I needed to see for myself just what kind of person you are, and you have shown me that, throughout the Tournament and in our match just now." he took the pages if allowed to and shook his head. He seemed a bit ashamed of himself.

"I am an assassin by trade." he said, fairly bluntly. He maintained his respectful tone but the warmth seemed to be slowly freezing up into something a bit more cold, "I was hired to kill you, I'm afraid." he gave Niko a brief moment to take in the revelation, but knew he needed to explain further to avoid inciting his wrath, "Originally I watched you in the tournament to observe your skill level so that I could plan accordingly, but... the more I watched you the more the information I was given didn't sit right with me. By the tournament's end I needed to find out for myself just who 'Niko Renzo' truly was before going ahead with the contract. That was why I challenged you just now. Everything that has transpired has told me all I need to know. You, Niko Renzo, are not the man I was to led to believe you to be. It seems I was manipulated by whomever wanted you dead."

He resumed eye contact with Niko by this point, "I've only been paid half the agreed upon sum, but that money is yours if you want it. Think of it as an apology. I should not have let myself be lied to so easily. Only the truly wicked in this world become my targets, and however briefly, I thought the same of you. My deepest and humblest apologies."

"I wish I could name the client for you, but I'm afraid that's impossible. They insisted on remaining anonymous. An unfortunate commonality for this business. But what I can tell you amounts to this: I don't believe them to be a single individual. The man I negotiated with was clearly not there of his own accord, and was likely following someone else's instructions." it was a shame Han couldn't offer much more information than that about the client. He preferred forthrightness but also understood the necessity of anonymity in a profession like this, "If you intend to discover the identity of this client, then perhaps you would accept my assistance? I don't take too kindly to being used."

Festival Time!!!

The festival was in full swing. Smells of foods from across the world filled the air, along with the sounds of music from three different stages. The occasional firework lit up the sky, coming from random spots all around the festival. Yet even still, the climax of the festival had not arrived.

Per tradition, the champion and the runner up would be asked to take the main stage, side-by-side. All the music would stop, and they would both make a speech. The runner up would speak first, and the champion would go second. Their faces would be displayed on giant screens behind them and broadcast out into space. After their speech ended, the largest fireworks of the night would light up the sky in every direction surrounding the festival. It was a spectacle, viewable from satellites in space.

Bakuto and Angela stood just behind the main stage, waiting for their cue to go on. The bands at the other two stages had already stopped playing, and the band on the main stage was in the middle of their last song...

Bakuto

The Festival!
Location: World Martial Arts Tournament, Planet Earth
Time: Saturday, July 16th, 2500

The festival had begun Bakuto wasn't fond of these kind of get together. The thing he did enjoy seeing was all the food and from where he was from food was always a reward after a fight for him from his village but this was different. This was a party to celebrate this tournament but many people who didn't even take part in the tournament was partying in this celebration. This was something Bakuto had to accept but this was still strange to him.

The night started and to his own surprise he had to give a speech. Before he could object to this he was up in front of everyone who expected something from him. With a grumble and a groan he stood there and said, "Well I guess I don't have a choice do I? If I had gotten one then I wouldn't be giving any sort of silly speech. So I wont take long, it was an honor to fight in this tournament. I didn't win, but I didn't have to enjoy the fights I was in. Now when ever is the next tournament whether it be five years from now or whenever I will be here again and next time I will be stronger!"

With what little he had said. He gave Angela her turn to do the speech he dreaded himself. He said quietly to her, "If I ever have to do something like this again, it will be too soon. Good luck out there."

Angela was in awe of the festival. So many people eating, cheering, chatting, and playing music. The occasional firework lighting up the sky, it was a nice sight. Some people even recognized Angela as the champion, despite her looking different. Rather than wear her normal clothes, she went along with the festival and worry a more extravagant attire. A beautiful blue kimono with a flower pattern design on it, with matching footwear. She even had her hair put up in a bun. She blushed a bit from all the attention, if her mother and sister could see her now.

Eventually the festival lead up to her and Bakuto being taken to the back of a stage. Minutes later, it was clear for them to come out, a massive crowd sitting in front of them. Apparently they had to give some sort of speech about the experiences and plans for the future, or something like that. Bakuto went up and gave his speech, pretty much just stating that next time he'll be stronger and how honored he was to participate and make it as far as he did. He finished and walked back past her, commenting on the situation. She gave a small sigh. "You and me both... I'm not good with speeches..." She mumbled as she stepped forward.

She was quiet for a second, trying to figure out what to say before taking a deep breath. "What can I really say? Heh... Well... I guess the first thing I can say is that this was honestly my first major tournament... Well, to be more precise, my first ever real fight... I entered this tournament for an important reason, to help my family, and I'm happy to say that I can finally do just that. This tournament had some strong fighters, really strong. I'm proud to have gotten to face them." She said, looking around the crowd. "And you can bet I'll be here for the next tournament... Whenever that happens." She added before stepping back. "Ugh... My heart is pounding..." She mumbled to herself. The sound of fireworks caught her attention as a massive showing of fireworks lit up the night sky above the festival. "Dang... Sis would love this..."

Confused though he was, Niko's mind was fasttracking its way out of that and away from his previous anxiety to carefully determine whether or not he was hearing a truthful tale. The man was currently under suspicion, so he'd have to make a pretty convincing case. That Wu Han was testing his character and had come to some sort of decision on that was, on its own, not very helpful. No, it was the fact that he admitted to being an assassin hired to kill him started the ball rolling, because the assassin was not currently assassinating. He had put a hold on his job, pending inquiries into the true nature of his target, of which he subsequentally discovered that his target was a narrative fiction put to Niko Renzo in like the frame of a painting. Someone slandered, big time, to get the murder put on him. But wait! It gets better! Because apparently Wu was not merely an assassin, but an assassin with a conscience, a man with a personal code to live by. Niko found such people to be a little sketchy, because it was effectively the notion that they were drawing the line at certain actions, all which being a murderer for hire. That said, since this guy's code was apparently 'I know kill terrible people', and Niko himself was a soldier trained to do just about same...it was clear that the difference between them at the end of the day was minimal, at best. There'd be some question of the legalities of whay Wu did in life, less about Niko's actions, basically.

Anyway, the honor code that he lived by was such that he felt bad for even taking the money for the job in which he was lied to on, and so he was offering it to him. Niko thought for a moment, 'Might be a decent consolation prize for my efforts.', but then he stopped that thought as Wu got tot he part about his client... It was probably a company who'd sent a man in as their contact, and that alone tipped him off, because...Niko could count on basically one hand the kinds of people who would really want a piece of him. As a soldier, he entertained a degree of anonimity, and none of his COs had really anything against him. In fact, the kinds of people in the military who would be pissed off enough to want him dead wouldn't bother with a paid assassin. They could put together a good Black Ops team to do it. No, this was probably the work of 'people with connections', and that narrowed the field to about ONE, which he sadly had no evidence for...but Wu was willing to help on. That was a definite sign that he could be trusted. Because a professional assassin wouldn't bother with something like this if he'd failed and was looking for a better opportunity. He'd be popping off of Niko's radar to catch him off-guard. So, he must have been an honorable assassin and not simply lying to cover his ass.

"I won't be taking the money. You can take it something of a consultant's fee because I need your help to get at the bottom of this. I think I know who did it, but I want to confirm it, at least from the man who hired you. And if there's any connection to who I think it is, I might ask for a little help on a raid I've been thinking of, if you're up for it. It's just for information from the guilty party, to add to this obvious slander. What do you say? Deal?"

He held out his hand, eyes on Wu to see what he'd do.
