name: Mus Rattanson - nickname ‘Bumface’
age: 19
occupation: shepherd

description:
hair color: dark brown (see eyebrows)
eye color: deep brown
skin color: fair, lightly tanned

Mus is a bear of a young man. And he sure reminds you of one; of an overweight, chained up dancing bear. Regardless of his bulk, Mus Rattanson misses the confidence to stand up proud and claim space for himself. Usually he tiptoes, dances and fidgets about nervously.

In a culture where abundant facial hair is seen as a sign of power and masculinity, Mus lacks even the smallest shimmer of a moustache or beard. He get’s teased with that daily and the taunting nickname ‘Bumface’ has stuck to him like droppings to a sheep’s curly-haired behind.

The youngster is timid and soft spoken. His voice higher than you’d expect from a man of his size. To make matters worse, it has the most annoying tendency to shoot up a couple of octaves when emotions, nervousness or fear take over.

Usually Bumface...errr....Mus wears a warm woolen shirt beneath a sheepskin coat, trousers or a kilt (depending on the season) and sturdy leather boots. Around his waist a belt hangs, with a footlong knife and a pouch with the necessities of a shepherd. He owns a battle axe, but through lack of courage, use and maintenance it has dulled and is starting to rust.

temperament:
Mus is self conscious and timid. He tends to shrink into the background as he doesn’t like too much attention. Surprisingly, for a man of his size, he’s really good at lingering in the shadows. Mus is most content when he can spend his day in the meadows with his herd.

When Mus has a bad hair day, his tendency to take off and hide away becomes an urging he can’t ignore. Luckily these off-days are rare. When people leave him be, he is most content. If one takes the time to sit and talk to Mus, one will discover that the babyface hides a solid set of brains. Yes, Mus is pretty smart and - if you get him started - well spoken and chatty.

If you really want to discover who Mus Rattanson is, you have to earn his trust. A hard feat. With a history of harassment, Mus has learned to protect himself behind a thick thorn ring.

abilities:
Talents:
  • hiding in the shadows
  • gaining trust with innocents (sheep, children...)
  • raising a herd of sheep
  • using a knife and sling
  • surviving in the wild

Mus sucks at:
  • standing up for himself
  • swinging an axe
  • talking to girls
  • gaining respect from his peers and elders

precious belongings:
  • a small but healthy herd of sheep of 3 rams, 14 ewes
  • his grandma’s old chainmail shirt, slightly to small for him, except at his chest where it is too wide (well kept, oiled and hidden away in a coffer)
  • a helmet with curled rams horns
  • a small wardrobe: 1 good and 1 worn woolen pair of trousers, 1 kilt, 2 worn woolen shirts, a pair of sturdy leather boots, a heavy sheepskin coat, a knitted, woolen bonnet

background:
Rattanson and Rattansdaughter is a prominent name in the clan. It is an old family of warriors which traces it’s lineage back several hundreds of years. Usually the members of the Rattan family are wiry, sturdy people, with a slight tendency for backstabbing.

Although people whisper that Mus must be the product of an extramarital escapade, none dare say it out loud. Nobody in his or her right mind would accuse Rattan Rattanson’s fallen wife of such a thing! Still, most do agree that Mus is an apple who fell mighty far from the proverbial tree. His father is, as was Mus’ mother, an exemplary Viking warrior, with a terrible temper. Rattan prefers bashing to bantering, marching to strolling and war cries to the soft bleating of sheep. Night and day, I say you, night and day. With not much in common, any true relationship between the two is pretty much non-existent.

Mus has few friends. Only when it is the annual misfit unite evening - which seems to occur more often of late - Mus finds an uncomfortable sense of camaraderie and acceptance. If you ask him bluntly, Mus Rattanson will admit that he considers his herd to be his family and friends. This is expressed in a fierce loyalty between them.

dragon: I have ideas, but they haven’t quite crystallized yet.
