Says the guy who pointed a crossbow at him the moment they met him. Well, to not prove his point, Robert kept his mouth shut with his usual smartass reply, but instead a genuine smile and a thank you for the two of them. "I'm glad I have all your trust. The village has some nice peaceful surroundings to catch up, and good food. You'll need it. Then, I'll show you the leads."

After all, he had a similar experience to these reincarnated anyway. It's better that he returned the favor somehow, at least spiritually.

But then...

"I'm not weak..."

He heard the young hotshot mumbled behind him. He turned around, saw the same look that MacKenzie saw in him, and immediately had his finger raised. "Don't even think about it, you-" But it was too late. MacKenzie immediately followed him, before Robert could even say anything to her. His hands covered his head as he saw them disappeared from his vision as fast as they left. These people! He just had their composures, and now they're already doing the dumb things a confused and uninformed person should NOT do! This is not a fairy tale.

"You might be doing dumb things, but I'd follow you to the ends of it to pull you out."

Fine........

"I'm following both of them. If you wanna stay out of this, just follow the road to the village outside the city."

Whoever would want to follow him are also welcome to do so. At this point, they're a team now.

Unfortunately for Robert, he was not the age where he could break an elephant's tusk anymore. He was not a physical fighter. His style was always passive, letting people or machines do the work for him. His stamina was low, and he was pretty much forced on the 'long' path. Not long after he departed to catch up to Yakeru, Robert was already far behind. To make the whole thing worse, above the scared civilians were on the opposite path as he was, running past and even into him, a few large wyverns was circling around him. Now that Yakeru provoked them once again, they have all the reasons to have his head here.

Robert found himself next to a human couple, who were also tired from running as he was, scared and seemingly hopeless as they gazed at the sky, thinking that the flying beasts were there to get them finally. The husband quickly shielded his young wife, trying to remain strong in the face of their imminent doom. For a moment, what the sarcastic and smartass logical man that Robert was known to be, acted automatically, standing right between them and the wyverns, his hands raised and casted a barrier to fend off the arrows from the wyvern-riders, meanwhile, his other hand would try to signal for the other civilians to get in the barrier.

Because he used to do it too...

"Hee hee, this expedition's just a good one, that's all," Afki said, receiving her share of the treasure. She did find it odd that there were no creatures in sight. The scout's report only heightened her growing concern. Afki's experience told her that if something was this far out of the norm, unexplored area or no, there was something wrong with the situation. She unstrung her bow and placed it in her quiver; if there was something truly dangerous, then a normal weapon wouldn't cut it. She unsheathed her swords at her hips, flipping one over to use her battle-ready style: left blade with a reverse grip and right blade in a standard grip. Her expression grew serious, and she responded to Teleus, "Sure, but let's stay alert. We don't know what we'll find here."

Well now, you don't write, you don't call... I was beginning to think you'd forgotten about me, a familiar voice rang in her head. Of course, it was her ever-trusty partner, Parshath. The two blades in her hands were more than mere weapons; they were a sentient being who had bonded with her. Ever since their fateful encounter, the two had become inseparable, and she was reassured to have his power in this unsettling event. While she didn't always understand the sayings Parshath used, she knew he was only concerned for her wellbeing.

Sorry about that, Parshath, but things got a little boring. Hardly worth your time, Afki responded in her mind.

Yeah, no kidding. No mobs in sight for several days in a row? In a place like this? Not likely. Somethin's up. Parshath said, on edge.

I thought the same thing, Afki said. Never hurts to be too careful.

If anybody else had spoken to Yakeru, in his current state, as Mackensie had done just know he would have straight up ignored it or tell them to fuck off and be on his merry way. But it was just because these words came from Mackensie that they seemed to reach him and strike him deep where it counts. He had not expected this from her. She had been the first friendly face he had seen after waking up in this world and now she was scolding him making him feel like an idiot. Of course he cared! Could she not understand why he had done all this? He opened his mouth but words failed to come out.

Even if you could save just one life, it would have made fighting more than worth it, even when it costs your life in the process.

Seeing the anger in her eyes and sense it in her voice, he refrained from saying this out loud. It would probably just make her more angry. He closed his mouth and turned his gaze away from her. She was right of course, he had let his emotions take over and as he thought back on his actions it was clear he had not been thinking very rationally. Perhaps he still wasn't completely but at least she had gotten his attention.

“I...”

He got interrupted by a loud screeching sound. A flying creature, Yakeru vaguely recognized as something like a wyvern made its way towards them. From where they were standing, he could see the grin on the face of the goblin pilot as he aimed his crossbow. At least Yakeru was not alone to deal with this new problem, though he felt bad that he had dragged Mackensie into this. He made a mental note to apologize to her a thousand times, if they somehow made it out of this whole ordeal alive.

“I'll be decoy and try to lure it toward me. Get behind some cover and shoot it down when you have the chance.”

He pushed her gently out of the way to give his words some force and waved his sword at the incoming creature. “Here you monster! Did you want to get a piece of this? Come and get it!”
He deflected an incoming bolt and stared the goblin pilot straight in the eyes. He had expected another bolt coming his way but suddenly the wyvern veered off and flew away, the goblin shaking his fist at them. It seemed the goblin had received different orders, which could only mean that they had gotten the attention of the Witch. Again.

Oh damn.

“Humans! No more fighting, you make worse. Chatak already talk to Witch. Free humans of town. No be stupid, yes? No waste new life so quick.”

A voice spoke up behind them catching Yakeru by surprise. More so because it was a goblin who spoke to them. A goblin? Who they could understand? Asking them to stop fighting...Yakeru scoffed.

“Did the Witch now send one of her minions to talk to us? I'm sure she could not be bothered with us.” He raised an eyebrow at the man who stood next to the goblin, shifting his weight from one leg to the other. From the uniform, Yakeru could make out that he had been a guard. It all seemed like a very strange situation. This goblin had claimed to have talked to her on behalf of the prisoners, somehow Yakeru found that hard to believe.

“Why don't you tell her...”
To go fuck herself? Or better yet, to come here, kneel down before you and beg for forgiveness for all the carnage and for all the innocents she and her army have killed? Yeah that worked well last time, genius.

Yakeru sighed as he massaged his nosebridge, something he used to do when he felt annoyed or tired. Now he felt both.

“I will only believe that when I see it happen. Not before.”

He sheathed his sword and crossed his arms.

"I'm following both of them, if you wanna stay out of this, just follow the road to the village outside the city." with those words setting over them, the older man went off toward the city glowing orange in the sky that slowly grew dark with the sun disappearing over the horizon. Now in the silence between the screams of civilians escaping the city as it burned 'All of this was that woman's doing,' the thought made his blood boil yet he wasn't about to give in to his inner demons, so he tried to collect himself 'She will pay someday.'

If it weren't for his somewhat damaged pride the short little demon would have hesitated and considered the implications of following the older gentleman back towards the city lighting up the night sky, yet he was set on trying to prove himself. Dexter checked his newly acquired weapon and inspected it closely. "I'm going wit-" these words were more than enough to get his attention, snapping the knight out of his day dream "No you aren't, I am." the boy now even more embarrassed but sighed loudly, he was in way over his head but failed to see the risks until the knight spoke up "I've gotta do something useful!" Jared was readying himself and the demon boy raised his voice in protest, and gave pause to the handsome faced knight.

"If you want to help, go find the old man. Better you stick with him than me." Jared said after a moment of silence, and without another word he rushed towards the burning city with the sound of metal booted footsteps fading in the distance. Dexter spared no time standing around once the knight disappeared, except to grumble about being treated like a child as he ran in a different direction where he saw Robert went.

* * *

Fumbling with the crossbow in his hands Dexter sprinted towards the older gentleman after finding him near the city gates helping evacuate a family "I'll cover you!" the boy rushed to Roberts side, loading his crossbow and holding it at the ready. Dexter could sense the fear in the evacuee's and got a gut feeling like he was supposed to say or do something to help them cope with the horror.

"Don't worry folks we'll get you to safety." the boy gave the family a sweet little smile, and used the well of mana he possessed to fill the poor people with a feeling of reassurance and hope. This was his power, the ability to sense emotions and fill people with positive emotions.

* * *

In the distance one perceptive enough would be able to discern the unmistakable sound of heavy-metal boots clattering ever closer.

'Kill them, the two are in danger.' said the voice reverberating in his skull 'Kill the pathetic green-skinned whelps.' the hunger in the Revenant's voice was almost palpable to Jared but he gritted his teeth instead 'No, this time we do things my way.' for a moment Jared thought the creature would not respond but a sneer resounded from the back of his mind 'You need me, never forget it.' then it went silent.

Before he could respond a voice up ahead echoed through the sound of the roaring flames "Humans! No more fighting, you make worse. Chatak already talk to Witch. Free humans of town. No be stupid, yes? No waste life so quick?" and as if he had appeared from the shadows himself Jared soon stepped out from the ash and smoke directly in view of the pathetic creature "Tell me," he took a step towards the goblin "Why I shouldn't cut you down, for even speaking to that wretch." the knight was scowling at Chatak as he moved to stand in front of the short green-skinned humanoid "Tell me..." Jared said pausing as he reached for his sheathe.

Shing as quick as a flash his blade was pointed down at Chatak "Why I should show mercy to the same creatures that are slaughtering countless innocents in this burning city." Jared sneered looking at Chatak with contempt.

David looked at the little goblin who claimed to spoke to the witch. Part of him felt bad for the goblin. Maybe they were more victims then it seemed. I mean when the person your serving is a evil bitch who looked like she coul it your throat without hesitation. Who has a 7 foot tall woman with a giant sword at her beckon call, he’s probably serve them too.

“Whoever or whatever The Witch is, she needs to be taken down. I’m not gonna stand here and die. We need to think of a plan” David said looking at the group. Then he stopped, cursing as he felt a sudden sting in his head. Like someone was driving a spike into it. Suddenly he was hit, by a vision of some sort. A woman.

Her face was soft and kind, her eyes blue and hair dark like his. She smiled at him and told him. Don’t worry, it will be ok. Don’t worry about things you can’t change, but do something about the things you can.

Seeing the looks he was getting from everyone, he shook his head and said “Sorry, I don’t know what came over me. I’ll be fine…I think.”

Looking at the goblin who came to him, and Yakeru. They could at least understand him. “Why are you serving her? It doesn’t seem like the best option for you. Take a stand against her. You have the numbers to stand up to her. If you help us, we can bring her down.” David said, hoping to come through to the creature.

Looking at the rest of them, “I think if we’re going to take on The Witch, we need to make a point to her. To show her we’re not going to back down or compromise with her. I think we should begin by taking out outposts run by her. First thing we need is a map of this place. Because I don’t think any of us know where the hell anything is.”

"Sure, but let's stay alert. We don't know what we'll find out here," Afki warned.
Teleus nodded and waved his hand. "Will do, ma'am. Make sure to squash any bugs come this way."

The Formic Hive looked as if its inhabitants had left in a hurry. The houses still had (rotting) food out of storage, like they didn't even have time to eat it. The War Greaves they typically wore on their legs were all missing. All the storage chests were still locked tight.

Teleus and team made for the queen's lair, where the treasury could be found. The place reeked of rotten food, but the treasury was surprisingly full - not with money, but with ore and scrap metal. The bugs were preparing for war. There were a few "hidden gems" among the scraps, including a couple pieces of adamantine gear, doubtless salvaged from unlucky adventurers. Afki got the adamantine gauntlets, Teleus the adamantine shield, and the other 9 adventurers their choice of equipment.

They returned to the city entrance. "Everybody ready?" Teleus called out.

Afki might have been the first to notice something...

There were signs of life everywhere, but not a single living creature was actually found. Afki found it really unsettling, and had her guard up constantly. Her eyes darted around, watching the shadows for anything suspicious. Despite, or perhaps because of, her vigilance, nothing seemed to have appeared, even on their path the queen's lair. She did enjoy the new gauntlets, though, and put them on after a brief inspection to make sure there was nothing inside. Afki was about to relax as they headed back to the city entrance when Parshath asked her, Afki, how many people were in our party?

What? We... uh... Afki responded hesitantly, having realized that she never bothered to count the number of people in her party. T-ten-

Twelve. You, the pally, and the other 10 mooks, Parshath answered. We had that many people in our party. Now we have eleven. Get what I'm sayin'?

Realized dawned on Afki's face as the puzzle pieces in her mind clicked together. She had thought something was a little off during the last loot sharing, but she had been too distracted by the concern for her own safety to notice. "We're missing someone," Afki said out loud.

Chatak Claybitah

Chatak raised a brow for a moment at the humans confronting him, both the original pair and a couple of newcomers. Were they all reincarnations, or were some of them normal humans? He couldn't really tell honestly, but it was clear that none of them seemed to think much of him. Probably. Again, he wasn't great at common, but that seemed to be the general vibe he was getting from them.

Also the sword in his face. That definitely gave him the feeling they weren't big goblin fans.

"Oh? And why Chatak not talk, hm?" He asked, still looking fairly confident. He didn't feel that way, but he certainly faked it well. "Chatak want witch let humans go. What Chatak do? Fight? Witch have army. Chatak have Chatak. If Chatak fight, he die. So he talk. Simple, no?"

He looked to Yakeru now, 'calmly' stepping past the knight as he did his best not to show the fear he felt. He would just have to trust that Patches and the Alchemist had found Shaktak already, and they were watching from a hidden spot somewhere nearby for if something went wrong. The fact that the man hadn't killed him on the spot though seemed like a decent sign though, and if he kept up this facade of confidence, they'd be more likely to at least see where the conversation went.

"And if you not believe, how matter?" He asked. "What you do? Fight? Yes, you kill gobs on way here. Small groups. But you have same problem as Chatak. One person against whole army, very heroic, but only in stories. Maybe you strong, maybe you good with sword, but only one sword. Enemy have many. If gobs surround human, attack together? You talented, but you block twenty blade at once? No! You almost die right now to Wyvern! You fight now, you throw life away, change nothing. That why you have no choice but hope witch agree, like Chatak."

Finally, he turned to the third man. Thankfully, this one seemed reasonable enough to actually consider negotiations instead of just insulting and threatening him right out of the gate, so he could at least trust one of them to be mature.

"Chatak thank human for offer, but cannot accept." He said. "Humans think Chatak serve Witch, but he not. Chatak just Chatak. But Chatak not think other gobs agree either."

He sighed.

"You say serving Witch not gobs best option, but you wrong. Gob not welcome in world. Other race see gobs, they kill. No... what is word... mercy? No talk. Not try. Goblin filthy like rat. Need live in wild instead, where other race not look. Then gobs only worry about be eaten by animals, or die of cold, or hot, or hungry. If you live that life, but then human appear who not just not kill, but care, show kindyness, you would betray?"

He looked at the whole group now, the fear of being killed fading as four years of indignation and anger entered his voice.

"This problem human make. Witch human like you. But no, you good human! You not like Witch, you own person! But Goblin, no, not people, evil monsters! All same! Kill by hundreds with friends! Find cave full of gobs? It dungeon, not home. They all enemy fighter, not scared tribe! Men, women, baby, what different? No different! No need feel bad, just monsters to guard loot! You think goblin fight with Witch for no reason? Goblins have every reason to turn on humans!"

His glare was practically burning at this point, fuelled by the rage of an entire race. Alongside it though was something else. A confidence that not only matched, but surpassed the original facade he'd put up.

"And even then, Chatak still ask Witch to free humans. You know why? Because Chatak believes in human, even if humans not believe in Chatak back. Even when most humans stupid, cruel, insult Chatak, Chatak still know some human good. Chatak hope some human good. Chatak want world where human, gob, and all other race not fight, work together. But that world not happen on own, so Chatak make happen. Start today. Here. So you stop fight, before make worse. No more dead today."

MacKensie stalled a moment before moving to Jared and putting a hand on his sword-arm. It didn't occur to her that she couldn't stop the hulking knight, even if she tried, but after hearing the promise of a peaceful resolution, she wanted to hear Chatak out.

The little goblin in front of them spoke with an eloquence that was completely unexpected by MacKensie. Perhaps 'eloquence' was not the right word, the young woman wasn't sure, but beyond the broken English was a confident, persuasive poise and logic that felt eerily reminiscent of the best orators she'd ever heard. Chatak was a charming individual and clearly very smart.

She listened to his parly with David, about the plight of his goblin kin, and a pang of guilt ran through her. These goblins looked ugly and terrifying. Even without this massive battle, she would've no doubt assumed they were monsters, and not batted an eyelid to hear about them being exterminated in caves for their treasure. This guilt, however, did not exceed the assessment of the current situation. The goblin armies of the Witch had just decimated an entire city of humans. And it would seem that this war against the Empire of Hume was not over. In her heart, she'd already picked a side.

"Sir Chatak," she started, walking up to him, not too close so she could look the little goblin in the eyes. With a proper curtsy - a little drawn out to make sure the respect was shown - she continued. "My name is MacKensie Trydant and I thank you for coming to speak with us." She flicked a stern look at Jared and Yakeru before settling back on Chatak. "You speak with great wisdom and a good heart. That much is certain. And thus, we will heed your words and trust that the prisoners will be set free. You have my gratitude for coming to a peaceful negotiation with the Witch."

She returned to Yakeru's side and placed a gentle hand on his shoulder, showing she was on his side but hoping he'd calmed down, for his own good and theirs. Looking at David, who seemed the only other one of their group who was looking at the bigger picture, she said, "Now's probably not the best time to talk strategy. We need to get the hell out of here." Then back to Chatak. "Do the prisoners have somewhere to go? There's a village just outside the city." She pointed in the direction of the gate they'd come through. "We can escort them to safety if necessary." Then she let out a deep breath and got snarky real fast. "If not, then I'd like to rid myself of this awful vista."

If there was any signal that the refugees didn't need an escort, MacKensie would glady walk off back towards the city gate. Down that long market street, she could see Robert and Dexter, and amidst a cacophony of competing thoughts, a lone concept popped up above them all.

Fish night.

Her stomach grumbled.

By the time the wyvern riders were done, Robert was hella out of his elements, as the barrier he created faltered almost immediately. But thankfully, it was resolved without bloodshed, and the couple thanked both Dexter and Robert for their assistance. The artificer patted the husband on the shoulder, had a firm grip before nodding in approval as he watched the two followed the trail to the village that he spoke of. Turning over to Dexter, who, for all his cowardice earlier, bravely helped him in the face of danger there, he too gave the young demon a nod.

"Thank you for the help, young one."

He might seem like a kid, but Robert found the act at least the mark of a man.

A while later, seeing MacKenzie along with the group of prisoners made Robert sigh in relief, but he was too tired to really make a scene or anything. "I hope yall are now ready to go to the village, because I sure did." Was his only remark, not really to anyone, but his side-glance to Yakeru was meant to be an indirect jab at the youngster's rashness. He might not get it right here, but later he would, because the artificer would not let this slide so easily. For now, he just wanted some fish.

He spent most of the trip back to the village in silence. Only once he reached there would he speak, mostly to the village chief, who promptly agreed to let the refugees and the reincarnated to stay there, but it will probably take a bit of time to get everything ready, because of the sudden influx of people coming in. Then, Robert would excuse himself for a couple of while or so as the village was getting ready. If one were to follow the man, they'd find quite a large house stationed in an obscure corner of the village, easily missed and hidden. It looked primitive, but make no mistake, it was very mystical once you step inside it. The ticks and clasps of wood or metal together made for a very surreal experience, as all sorts of machineries, powered by physics and a little bit of magic touch made the house lively even if no one was living there except Robert. For those attentive, there was a checkered board of 64 squares on one of the desks near the doorway, filled with pieces that might be familiar to the reincarnated. Does this game also exist in this world too?

Location: Sealed Tower
Interaction:

Enya, a tiny flame sprite that had pledged herself to the Witch, found herself sitting on the inner sill of a stony window adjacent to the coffin room that she had dubbed the Room of Tombs. It had been turned into a makeshift office, but Office of Tombs just didn't hit the same way. It was the rhyme for sure.

With her casually kicking her legs and her head resting in her palms, Enya would fail at lying about being bored. She was not a warrior and her pyromancy was pretty at best. Sure, she could start a mean fire… a happy fire too but the time and effort it took was not something to brag about. And so she was not out fighting like the cool guys… and gals!

"I will give you an even greater flame!" Enya had promised the Witch when she had made her pledge while having so little to give. Why had she even said that? With such confidence too. A sigh escaped the sprite as she briefly shut her eyes as she thought of her future in the ranks of the Witch. Briefly, because her eyes suddenly shot open.

"IT'S HERE!" Enya's face displayed excitement as she jumped off of the sill and hovered in place. Her head swiveled back and forth, searching for what she was feeling until she watched both the Witch and the goblin she was meeting make a slow exit from the Room of Tombs.

[“Before we go, I want to make you a deal. If you can persuade even one nation to prepare for the coming apocalypse, I shall call off my invasion.”]

[“Ideally you’d end it now, before you weaken both sides beyond the point of recovery, but fine. I’ll do you one better. You want an empire that can hold off the Void, I’ll do it myself.”]

Ugh goblin speak is so gross sounding. Might as well shake a box of stones. She wince but couldn't help but notice herself being drawn to the room the two stepped out of.

[“I’ll show you the path you should’ve taken yourself.”]

And with that, the two of them strode out of the room, flanked by the alchemist, Patches, and a no doubt rather confused Melvin. Enya also took the moment as a chance to trespass into the office, taking advantage of the Witch and the goblin being the center of attention.

Upon flying into the office, she honestly didn't know what to look for. The greater flame was here, but what was it even? She simply felt it. Her wish. Her promise.

"Come on come on come on come on. Where is it? It's supposed to be in here! How hard is it to find a Greater flame? Hmm… OH! I feel it over here!" Enya flew to and hovered over an untouched coffin. "Oooh wait a sec! It's a re-"

Lex pushed open the coffin with a loud grunt and sat up. Confusion was painted on his face as he looked at his surroundings, but his eyes widened when his sights rested on Enya who stared back, perplexed.

"Uh…" He didn't know what to even say. To Lex, everything seemed real, but he figured this had to be a dream. Meanwhile, Enya cocked her head to the side.

"You're not…" She hovered around him, studying him. "You're just a human… I guess the Witch will want ya, but why do I feel like we've met? Have we met?'

Considering the circumstances, the sprite spoke much too fast. Lex blinked rapidly and even rubbed his eyes… and nothing. This was very real… so far anyway.

"I don't… I don't think so but wait. A witch? What is going on right now?"

"You… Honestly, I don't even know how it works, but you're in a new world now. Our world. This world. Aion. Probably the best world from what I hear. Anyway, I'm Enya and it is pretty cool to be the first one to meet you. Pretty cool for you too." She smiled big as she gave him her tiny hand to shake.

With an uneasy smile, he reached out with his right thumb and index finger considering Enya's size. The moment the two touched a bright light momentarily flashed on contact, causing both of them to wince. Once the flash vanished, the two locked eyes with Enya pointing at Lex.

"Did we just become…"

"Best friends?" He was just trying to follow the white rabbit to some semblance of reality. Why did he even say that?

"Ew no! Pacted… or Pact mates…Or… Anyway, we have a pact now!" She shouted excitedly while flying about before hovering in place with a pensive look on her face. "How do I know that? I've never pacted up before… Maybe it's like when you know you're hungry."

What the hell is going on right now?

Goblins always had the reputation of being bad, mischievous, vile and evil creature in folklore and legends. Which is the reason why in many stories they are depicted as such. Even in the stories that Yakeru had written in his past life. They would murder or kidnap people, raid homes and settlements or be a general nuisance to the hero and his party and if someone would ask why they did it, the natural reply would be because they were evil. No one really looked beyond that point of view. Hearing the words of Chatak, would you think or believe that this was all a big misconception of an entire race of mo...creatures? It had certainly not helped being woken up to an entire army of goblins, killing people left and right. Yakeru could understand that being bullied, hunted and killed for sport for generation was enough to fuel the anger of the goblins. Enough to rise up against the humans who had treated them like this but it was not a solid reason to start killing innocents.

An eye for an eye should not be the way it should go but then again isn't that what Yakeru had just done?

All of them had killed goblins but that was out of self-defence. He on the other hand had, after they had gotten safe passage out of the city, returned and slaughtered every goblin on his path until he had reached this point, meaning he was no better than the humans who treated the goblins as such.
Chatak's speech and Mackensie's look and words had put an everlasting impression on him, making the feeling that he had been wrong even stronger.

The soft touch of her hand on his shoulder felt strangely soothing. He took a deep breath and relaxed, turning his head towards her and with a slight smile, gave her a grateful nod.

This Chatak had certainly a gifted tongue. If his words were true and if there were more goblins just like Chatak, then perhaps all hope was not yet lost for this world. It seemed that this goblin was more than meets the eye. Just like Jared, the hulking knight, Dexter the demon boy and even mister Avant. This world, its inhabitants and lore seemed to be more than meets the eye. Yakeru knew too little of it yet to fully understand what was going on yet he was intent to find it all out. Maybe he would find out there was a deeper meaning behind all this.

“Very well.” Yakeru bowed his head to Chatak before turning on his heels and following Mackensie down the road. He could sense they were being watched and not only by Chatak. It was her presence, somewhere close by though still he kept walking, trying to ignore it.

Robert and Dexter were waiting for them and though it seemed that Robert was remaining his calm composure, the tone in his voice revealed annoyance. This was not over, Yakeru understood.

Great...

So far all his actions had led him to getting scolded. Not how it should have been in a story or a fairy tale. It made him think that he should stop acting as if he was in one, no matter how fantastic this world was, and react more rationally.

The group, together with the refugees and prisoners, had grown into a small army though the prisoners who appeared to be all soldiers would probably move on soon. There were some wounded among them though but Yakeru was certain they would get help in the nearby village.

He walked in relative silence beside the old man after he had spoken with the village alderman, Robert didn't make it known to the others that he was taking his leave. Curious to see where the man was heading Dexter hurried after him and caught up with Robert as he reached what one could only assume was his domicile. It looked like the old house had stood here for many years, possibly a decade or so. "Been here awhile?" the boy cleared his throat to get Robert's attention, looking up at him with a questioning glance before continuing "I won't pry mister, you got your privacy and I got mine." Dexter shrugged and gave the man a knowing look.

"But could you tell me one thing?" the boy shifted the crossbow to a more comfortable position on his shoulders "What the hell is that?" pointing at the checkered board looking at it like some kind of alien technology.

He thought he was already being secretive enough, quietly blending into the background amongs the refugees and taking his leave silently. Apparently not though; the demon boy was behind him as the reclusive Robert was unpacking his stuffs. Well, for his reclusiveness, he didn't actually have a lot of problems with having someone else inside his house. If one were to be mindful, the house did seem to be designed for more than one person, like the large bed, two chairs next to a decorative helix structure model, etc.

"A few years, yes. Some poor salesman couldn't wait to get rid of this place, but one didn't know how to clean it up." He replied, as he turned around. "Just don't bother the machines. The rest feel free to crash."

Robert was recharging some of the machines in the room like the heaters or the clock, which had been running quite low on power for a week now - any later and the clock would need to be recalibrated - when Dexter asked about the board he had there. On the contrary to the rather casual and non-interested tone he had earlier, Robert's tone suddenly grew a bit more excited that someone took an interest in it. He walked to Dexter and stood right next to the board. "It's a game. A very tactical game, you take turns and move your pieces in a way to capture this piece here." He pointed at the tallest piece on the board with a cross above it. "Each of these pieces have their own movement rules. I can give a quick crash course if you want."

Enya's eyes drew back to Lex as she felt his discomfort.

]"Listen, this is just as weird for me as it is for you… Well…" She actually thought about it for a moment. "Okay maybe it's a little worse on your end, but look you got me, the greatest flame sprite, Enya!" Enya landed on the edge of the coffin and performed a short bow. As great as she thought her gesture and greeting were, Lex still felt a bit uneasy, especially right now.

"What are you lookin' at?" Enya questioned as she noticed Lex looking past her.

"Her." He quickly answered while nodding towards the tall masked and cloaked woman who stole his attention. To say he wasn't a bit startled would be a lie. And he still didn't know what was going on or where he was. However, he tried not to show it. At most, he simply appeared cautious and alert.

Enya had peered over her shoulder seeing the Witch in the doorway. Her initial expression displayed fear. Like a child caught with their hand in the cookie jar. She decided to smile big. She had done something good after all. Right?

"You are the ninth." Her statement caused him to narrow his eyes as he tried to piece together the little bit of context he could gather. His worries managed to settle some when he was offered a hand by the white-masked stranger. There was just something about her that he couldn't quite place. Is this the witch?

"Seventh to awaken within this tower. You are not alone in having reincarnated here. Welcome to Aion. I trust you have some questions." And he had plenty.

Getting up, he faced the stranger, his eyes fixed on hers through the mask. He had already slightly digested some of what was going on, despite being in calm disbelief. So far he knew he was the seventh person to be reincarnated in this place that happened to be a tower. Not only that, he was in a completely different world known as Aion.

"Way too many if I'm going to be honest." Lex answered casually. As odd as everything was, would it be so bad to just go along with it. Best case, he was in an epic lucid dream. Worst case, he was really reincarnated into a world similar to many he had designed on the pages of comic books. The range of best and worst weren't all that bad, and the realization almost eased his mood a bit.

"I think the two best questions to ask would be, why was I 'awoken' here? And is there some kind of crisis I should know about?" He instinctively patted his pants pockets. A grin spread across his lips as he felt a single pack of cigarettes and a lighter too! "It's usually the deal in stories like this." Lex leaned heavily on his knowledge of literature... How could he not? He retrieved a cigarette and held it close to his lips. "Name's Lex by the way." He then lit the cigarette with his lighter. It would help him relax some more.

She looked on with some envy as he lit up a cigarette.
Why the hell not.
The Witch removed her hood and touched her fingers to the edges of the mask. When the latches disconnected, she removed it.

The woman seated herself cross-legged beside him, leaned forward a little, and leveled her gaze at him. A slight half-smile played on her lips. "I'll trade you the story, the plan, and my name for a cigarette."

@Thinslayer Afki took a quick wide scan of the current party, her mind deep in thought, and quickly made a conclusion, "Let's form 3 groups of three. We'll each search a different area of the city for Cho and come back within, say, an hour and a half." Parshath silently agreed with Afki's proposal. If his train of thought was correct, the group of three rule was perfect for ensuring maximum search coverage while maintaining a sense of safety in numbers. Theoretically, at least one member would be able to rejoin the main party even in the worst case scenario. "We should keep an eye out for each other, as well as for Cho. And if we don't find him with the time limit, we can discuss what to do after we regroup. How's that sound?"

As he listened to the man explain the basics of the game, not missing the sudden excitement in Robert's voice which surprised Dexter a little because the old tinkerer had spoken in a rather casual and disinterested manner "Guess you don't get a chance to play very often?" seeing as he seemed to live awhile from the village Dexter assumed that Robert didn't get very many visitors "Sounds interesting, teach away mister."

Dexter set the crossbow slung across his back down on the floor, making sure it wasn't loaded in the process before pulling up a chair across from Robert and sitting looking at the old man expectantly as he waited for Robert to begin.

Meanwhile In the village...

Makeshift tents and campfires were erected over the course of an hour, refugees huddled together mourning the loss of their homes and the lives lost on this fateful night. It was a woeful sight to see soldiers weeping and children silent with haunted expressions on their youthful faces, so many people displaced on this most horrific of nights. On this night the cold wind carried the voices of the despaired, a symposium of melancholy that reached the ears of all within miles as it was a grim reminder of this most tragic of nights. Jared watched the people as they wandered aimlessly, fury and guilt in his heart 'These people never deserved this,' the knight slumped against the wall of a building overlooking the impromptu refugee camp, Jared put his head in the palms of his hands 'They had lives, families and homes to return to but now...' lifting his face from his hands Jared once again looked down at the people in the camp, his eyes were full of tears 'These people have nothing, no hope in this cursed world.'

'Jared.'

Jared was startled by the sudden return of the Revenant's voice, it had gone silent since the confrontation with that goblin Chatak. He wanted to respond but his voice was lost as the other's filled his mind for all but a moment 'Jared can give hope, Jared give people hope.' hearing these words from the voice of a monster was strange, to him there was a suspicion welling up within his heart yet even if the monster had a motive nothing about the words were false. Jared would lay down his life to protect those who are unable to protect themselves, and something told him maybe that was his reason for being here.

A burning determination filled his heart that replaced the despair clouding his mind, a flame of hope to beat back the darkness. Jared was that fire, a white hot flame that would never die as long as the knight still breathed.

It was on this most fateful of nights the huddled masses would mourn no longer, the winds would no longer carry the cold touch of hopelessness and despair, no this night was not the end of hope but the beginning of it. "Listen to my words, and listen well." the knight stepped from the shadows his voice silencing the cries of the crestfallen "Look at me and see who I am!" his glowing eyes flashed in the flickering firelight "Am I still standing?" now Jared's voice boomed echoing off the small cottages that dotted the village "Do I look like I have given up?" some voices cried back from the darkness "NO" "Do I look like I'm ready to lie down defeated?" then more voices arose in answer "NO"

Jared pulled his broadsword from it's sheathe with a metallic hiss and a flash of light, his jaw was hard set and his eyes burning with a fiery rage fuelled by a determination to do justice for these victims of a conflict much larger than them. "THIS BLADE I WIELD IS IT TO FIGHT WITH?" now the cries became a symphony that rolled across the hills thundering a reply.

"YES"

"THIS SHIELD IS IT TO PROTECT WITH?" he banged his sword against the old faded steel of the antiquated shield

"YES"

"I WILL NOT GIVE UP, I WILL END THIS SUFFERING" Jared's voice was getting hoarse but he continued and raised his blade high "I WILL RISE UP TO FIGHT, NOW WILL YOU?" the question hung in the air.

Lex's eyebrows rose with the first inhale of his cigarette as he watched the mysterious woman remove her hood. Her strands of hair caught his eyes. Silver and wispy… a great difference from gray and thinned. When her hands reached for her mask, he kept his eyes fixed on her. Enya stared too, remaining quiet to respect their conversation. It's not like she had anything to add. In fact, she desired to learn something from this interaction, from both the Witch and Lex.

He exhaled out of the side of his mouth as the mask was removed, and beneath it, a face was revealed. Her face. He blinked a few times, staring straight ahead while the woman took a seat beside him. His mind briefly flashed to the partially drawn sketch he worked on just before this. What really did this world mean to him? What did this woman mean to him?

He met her gaze and smiled back at the Witch. Her proposal seemed fair enough.

"I'll trade you the story, the plan, and my name for a cigarette."

"Deal. Nothing like a cigarette with company." He did wonder about the value of a single cigarette in this world. The woman knew what it was, sure, but maybe it wasn't a luxury here. "Good company." He added, still smiling as he passed her a cigarette. He held up the lighter, prepared to charitably light her cigarette with it.

Ha! I picked the coolest reincarnation ever! He might fight for us for sure! I just have to make sure he remembers who he's made a pact with. ME! I mean the Witch is great, but she has to come second. It's just the way these things work.
