A @NeoAJ & @LovelyComplex Collaboration, Part 2 Present Time || Featuring: Jillian O'Brien & Danilo Belmonte

The people around him had mixed feelings about his presence, including the girls he saw as friends. He could lie and say he didn’t care, but he did. He cared a lot. Danny used to be the king of this very court right here, but now? He was a highschool has-been, probably a future gas station attendant, or at least, a guy who had no idea what he was going to do for the rest of his life. Maybe, he’d settle with a food service job because conveniently his family owned two businesses.

Sadly, Danny ruined his chances to join the big leagues and just lived the past couple years on auto-pilot, with routine and pattern, so he could always be there for his family and loved ones whenever they needed him. His life was on hold because it seemed the worst years had yet to come for the Belmonte family. His eldest sister was bound to get a divorce sooner or later, Elisa probably would overwork herself to death, Tiffanie would get fucked to death, and he was sure there were more issues behind the curtain of the Belmonte show.

If he was being honest with himself, even younger Danilo knew basketball wasn’t his future, but part of him wanted to believe basketball was everything he loved and dreamed of doing. Part of him wanted to believe life was that simple and he had everything planned out from start to finish. Part of him believed he would be a star forever. But, he wasn’t a complete idiot and he knew that wasn’t a life meant for him.

He knew even on the court, sure, he made the girls go wild and everyone praised him, but he didn’t feel fulfilled. It was like he was walking this meaningless life, always trying to impress and make his parents proud. He tried to justify this feeling of emptiness. Did it root back to when his twin, Natalia, started distancing herself? Or when Cece came to him crying and he realized there was more to life than looking cool? Or did it happen when he met Marco and found that up until he met this goofy boy he was just playing pretend? Like the real him was stuck in a box and only Marco could open it…

He had no idea but he knew, after the end of sophomore year, with Francis, Rhett, and all those in Allison’s year already gone, her ghost lingering in the hallways of Edenridge High, that basketball wasn’t his forever. He just knew... there was something more for him, but what was it? What was his forever? He had no idea of his destination but it certainly wasn’t being in the NBL, which he was told he would be part of ever since he was a little kid.

Now in his feelings, when his eyes locked with his childhood friend, Jillian, Danny cleared his throat and approached her. Kylee had walked away, leaving an open space beside her. Placing his hand on the back of his neck, like he had done at Marco’s house, he offered an olive branch, hoping she would take it. Danny knew she was still mad that he slept with her sister, Grace, the same year when he no longer had Francis to look up to, but he also wanted his friend back.

Even an inkling of what she used to be, he missed, and so he approached her, with no hesitation. Hoping things could be like it used to be, but knowing very well it can never be, he asserted,  “It’s good to see you, Jillybean. Um,” He could smell the strong stench of booze coming off of her and he gave her a genuine concerned look,  “... are you sure you can handle this?” He didn’t want to discredit his friend, but she’s been through so much already and this might just add to all her inner turmoil. Unfortunately, before she could respond the montage of Allison Davies started playing.

Her attempts to put up some sort of psychic wall or call the ghosts to her aid to block Danny Belmonte had failed, and now Jillian O’Brien had a lot more to deal with than how many hits Aaron Cox could take from a vodka bottle and which one would break first. She wanted to scream at Danny. She wanted an apology for what he did to their friendship when he did her sister. She wanted an apology for not even bothering to check in while she was recovering from the attack that dashed her hopes of having a family of her own to look forward to. She wanted an apology for stealing the Pokemon cards out of her Happy Meal when they were nine. She wanted Danny to be fucking sorry.

But there was no time for any of that. Apparently the ghosts were busy rigging up the audio/visual tech in this shell of a school, blaring the projection of one of their own. Allison Davies in happier times, with a future to look forward to that was seemingly limitless with its possibilities, her smile beaming. Back before that mouth was filled with foam and death. That optimistic look was one that Jill used to have herself. Now it filled her with pain to even imagine smiling that wide. As much as the strains of “Summer Long Gone” that filled the room. She couldn’t think about that song anymore. It was like someone had designed a PowerPoint of torture. Like most PowerPoint presentations. Jillian closed her eyes shut, not wanting to submit to it anymore. Not wanting to give whoever was doing this the satisfaction of drawing emotion out of her. Emotions were a thing of the past. They had to be.

As the gunshots rang out, Jillian opened her eyes again as the music video came to an end with the cryptic “Callahan 16-7-5” message. It had to be Roddy. Roddy was the last person to see Charlie Decker alive. He had to be tied to this. But Jill couldn’t be sure. Those emotions that were supposed to be a thing of the past? Anger was still a very prominent part of her present.

Danny though. Danny was still standing there, seemingly looking for an answer from her. Unfortunately, the one that came during the video wasn’t great. So Jill needed another one. “Handle this?” she slurred. “The only handle I gotta worry about is tha handle of this bottle not breaking while I beat the shit out of whatever braindead motherfucker thought this was a fucking funny joke! Dragging us here for this bullshit! Dragging up shit from the past like it’s a fucking game!” Hanging out with Mei as much as she did now had clearly given Jillian some of her bravado, and her penchant for swearing. “Fucking A/V nerd here being an asshole. What the fuck even happened on July 5, 2016?”

As the once star jock observed his friend with one hell of a sailor mouth now, Danny found himself cupping his chin and covering his mouth with his left hand. For a moment or two, he was stuck in a state of shock. Shock of what was projected on the wall and shock at how horrible his old friend’s state was. Jillian was barely understandable and living life in her primitive brain, behaving accordingly.

More often than not, Danilo Belmonte had encountered his friend, and her family members, on numerous occasions since the fall out. Rarely was she sober and if she was, at least up until sophomore year, she wanted nothing to do with him. This though. This Jillian was ten times worse. When did her perpetual state remind him of poison? When did it get so bad? Six months ago? When she lost...

That feeling, that turned his emotions jagged, curled up in his stomach and chest. This feeling that seemed to be his new normal as of late continued to make his insides tight. And he felt powerless. Guilty. This was all his fault.

When Danny looked at Jillian, who peered at him with emptiness in her eyes, those eyes that refused to connect and let him in, he could only stand there and watch. Her emotional pain, as much as she tried to hide it, seeped out in her words and he could feel her hurt. He could see her invisible scars so raw, with no skin to cover up the pain.

He only had himself to blame. None of his gifts were received, either thrown out or refused or stolen right off her porch. All Grace suggested was to give her sister space and time to heal, as if she had done nothing wrong and this was all on him. When really, it takes two to tango, but that one mistake made Jillian feel the ultimate betrayal so maybe Grace was right, this was all on him. Maybe he was a fool for thinking with his dick instead of his heart at the age of sixteen.

Danny wasn’t pleading to be the best guy in the world, especially not during highschool, but this felt drawn out and he hated seeing her get worse and worse by the day. It seemed no one cared about her state, not her family, not her so-called friends, no one. She was drowning herself in alcohol, cursing and yelling at the world because hurt people hurt people, and just… looking sickly. Slowly killing herself.

He royally messed up. He knew that. Danny had thought, at the time, that Grace would be a big win not only in his and Quinn’s game but also he thought, maybe Grace could cure him of his ‘disease’. He was wrong and if anything, he lost Jillian and found men more attractive than he had before. That was neither here nor there because what he was presently witnessing was Jillian’s skin looking dull and grey, her eyes being completely bloodshot, and her hair clearly thinning. Did no one know that too much alcohol dehydrates you?

Just when he was finally going to respond, his green eyes went back to the still image on the wall and those numbers. At that point in time, his mind was taken away from worrying too much about his old friend who hated his guts to the numbers before him — the feeling of nostalgia flooding over him. Why were those numbers so familiar? Why did he feel like this clue was only possible if he had come tonight? Who knew he would come tonight? Lost in thought, but still directing his words to Jillian, Danny freed his mouth from the hand that was covering it and snapped his finger, as if this would help jog his memory, “I think, I think I know those numbers.”

Knew those numbers? That would mean Danny knew something meant something, and that was not a track record he had established in the past. It meant he would do things like not sleep with a friend’s sister.

It seemed petty for Jillian to still harbor such a grudge over something so long ago that apparently meant more to her than any of the other parties involved. But it still hurt. Grace was the closest sibling to her in age and with the other three now moved out of the house, it should have been the stronger bond. Instead, in the wake of their dad’s passing, dishonor happened. Her relationship with Grace had gone from a frenemy sibling bond to a frost-coated bridge that neither of them had been willing to cross since. She didn’t even know what Grace was doing to support herself or if her mom was charging rent. Jillian didn’t care to find out. Grace clearly didn’t care either.

Danilo Belmonte? Even now he seemed as clueless as ever. Rubbing the back of his neck trying to figure out what to do next. How many times had Jillian offered him advice? How many times had she kept him in check for his own good? Except the one time there was going to be no chance of her involvement, and he failed. And kept failing. Was there anything behind those eyes? It didn’t seem like there was for a while. Until he decided to snap his fingers and proclaim he knew the connection.

“Know what? What the fuck those numbers have to do with anything? And how are you knowing shit? It’s Roddy’s family up on the board! Why isn’t he coming up with tha number one answer? Huh?!?” Jillian wasn’t worried about volume control at this point, so the Callahan boy probably heard what she was yelling about. Good. Him and Lanie can bond over how much they hate her. Might as well join in with the cosmos. “What the fuck happened that fucking summer?”

Jesus Christ. All these curse words and the pressure of Jillian yelling at him was reminding him how the coach or his father would talk to him when they countlessly told him to pass the ball. To say he was getting increasingly annoyed by this was an understatement. He was trying to do a good thing but she was treating him like garbage. Jillian had changed and honestly? He was wondering why he cared about her in the first place.

“Would you shut up!”

A @LovelyComplex, @NeoAJ, & @BrutalBx Collaboration || Featuring: Kylee Grimm, Roddy Callahan, Danilo Belmonte, Jillian O'Brien
____________________________________________________________________________________________

“Would you shut up!” As if matters couldn’t get worse, all eyes were on them, or well, him, which caused Danny to sweat. Danny from highschool would love the limelight but this Danny, he was anxious and nervous because knowing these numbers meant somehow he was tied to this and he didn’t like that. On top of that, Kylee and, goddammit, Roddy decided to insert themselves.

“Is everything okay?” The Mayor’s daughter smiled with faux concern, while releasing Roddy from her hold. “I couldn’t help but overhear… you might know what the numbers mean?” The minx that was Kylee Grimm ate up all this tension and poked the bear a little more. She wanted him to spit it out already so they could go to their next lead.

“It’s just a hunch...” Danny’s mind was kind of distracted with how harsh Jillian was to him, but there was no turning back. He didn’t want to give her another chance to scream at him. Even if he messed up sophomore year, he didn’t think he deserved any of this. She was just being a bitch and taking out her misery on someone that still legitimately cared about her. Maybe the only person that wanted to save her.

“A hunch? Hm. Well we’re all ears.” Kylee gestured to them four but also the people around them. His whole class. “A hunch is better than what we have.”

Okay.

Having stared at those numbers for a bit, from when they went on the wall to when Jillian screamed at him, Danny did find himself in a memory, freshman year, where he was talking to Francis early in the morning. It was one of those memories that at the time, all Danny could see was that beaming smile, but somehow, he looked past the miraculously handsome jock’s face and saw his senior open his locker.

Combination 16-7-5.

Even through all the idle chatter and listening to Francis’ laugh, Danny Belmonte was able to ingrain this in his mind and that made him panic. Why of all the details about Francis did he remember this? It made him seem like a creep. He wasn’t a creep! He was just head over heels for the guy at the time. Clearing his throat, and cracking his knuckles, he looked from Jillian, to Kylee, and ended his green gaze on Roddy. If anyone needed closure, it was Roddy Callahan. This was probably eating him alive, when really, it was just a simple answer. The next lead was Allison’s boyfriend’s locker. Made perfect sense and didn’t take a rocket scientist.

Danny was nervous people would look too deep into him knowing this. Like instead of thinking oh maybe Francis needed Danny to open his locker in the past, they’ll immediately jump to Danny’s gay. The thought of being ridiculed and judged…

He didn’t want that. Especially not after Jillian made his ears bleed. But, if he acted like this bothered him, or changed the tone of his voice in any way, then someone, like Kylee, who was good at picking up things, would definitely catch on that he was in the closet. He had to act normal. Maybe they’d leave it alone and not ask why. “I’m pretty certain we have to go to your brother’s locker, Roddy. That’s his combination.”

“I thought you said a hunch!” Kylee became totally flabbergasted. And yet, she still wasn’t done talking, intrigued at the fact that Danny of all people, knew this was Francis’ combo, “Why the hell do YOU know this?” The exact question that Danny didn’t want to be asked, the gossip girl was quick to ask. “Like come on, were you really THAT close to Francis?”

“I don’t know… I just do.”

Roddy was unsure what to make of this revelation. Why would Danny know Francis’ locker combo? For all intents and purposes and as far as Rod was concerned, they’re relationship didn’t extend beyond sports. It was a long standing theory that Danny was Francis’ heir apparent to the crown of Eden’s premier jock. Danny, like Fran, was not an out and out duck like the guys you see in movies. He was genuine and caring, had his faults sure, but was a decent human being nonetheless.

“I would just call him and ask but…” Even in such a confusing time, Roddy was trying to be rational and logical. He was not an outwardly emotional person and often thought about life in ones and zeroes. It was this aspect of him that really created the great divide that separated him from his peers. Some even teased him with the nome de plum of Robo Roddy. “Fran and Joaquin are somewhere in the fucking mountains right now shooting. I’d need a satellite phone to get in touch with them.”

Francis had met Joaquin his first year at Yale. Having come out as gay but still trying to find himself, he wasn’t expecting to meet his soulmate at the first party of the year but that’s what happened. By all accounts, aspiring filmmaker Joaquin made the first move. Whatever the case, the two just worked together and when Fran brought home his new beau (not that one) the Callahans were impressed and just as smitten.

If Danny’s demand for silence didn’t stun Jill, him being able to nail down exactly what those numbers were certainly did the trick. Would anyone have been able to pull that answer out of thin air? Shoot, Jill was still trying to remember what she did that summer. It was getting harder to remember things. Ask her what flavor was on the wings she had earlier, she’d be hard-pressed to tell you. But she knew there was no way Danny should have had that kind of answer to that question.

Luckily, Kylee was there to ask the questions that Jill wanted answered. Granted, Jill could have asked them herself, but it probably wouldn’t have been that eloquent. “My colleague from the daily paper raises a very good point, Danny boy. How’djya get that locker combination in the first place? Let alone remember it years later?”

In these moments, the cold exterior that Marco had witnessed countless times when people pressured Danny too much started washing over him. Balling his fists, digging his nails into his skin, Danny reiterated, “Like I said, I don’t know. And does it even matter? Or have you—” he specifically directed this to Jillian, “—forgotten why we’re here?”

Annoyed now, Danny eased his way through the crowded group and took charge, “We’re here because of the letters and look, there’s a dead girl on the wall. Let’s stop wasting time and just see if I’m right.” Why call Francis when they could just check themselves?

If Danny wasn’t caught up in his head, angry at feeling cornered, he would’ve looked for Marco and helped him out. Right now though? He just needed to leave. Marco was with Lanie anyways. He would be fine. Danny, however, could no longer be in this gym that should be filled with good memories but only reminded him of how much of a disappointment he was.

From getting reacquainted with his ex, to him hurting Tiffanie’s feelings, to Jillian’s hollering, to Francis’ stupid locker combination, today was not his day. He was ready for it all to be over. The sooner they got to the bottom of this, the better.

Sigh.

Roddy placed his hands upon his hips and shook his head. Maybe the purpose of all this was to drive some sort of wedge between the kids of Edenridge? For what purpose he wasn’t sure but one thing that Rod was certain of was that whoever was doing this, under the guise of truth and justice, did not have the best interest of these people at heart.

”Lets just go to the locker, it can’t hurt any.”

Without a second thought, the second born son of Callahan span on his heel and pushed his way out of the gym and into the derelict halls of Edenridge High.

A Flashback Collaboration between @BrutalBx & @metanoia || featuring Charlie Decker & Jade Taylor

The unease which Charlie felt in that moment was palpable and could easily be cut with a knife. Not only was he in enemy territory in Pinehurst with an eye out for Fear Gorda. Not only was he running Decky’s corner for him and the terrifying Rey Rey Gonzalez. Not only was he trying to find the courage to finally express how his heart only beats for one Penelope James. He was getting his photo taken by some little geek on the other side of the Monarchs gym and it was pissing him off.

”I swear if that curly haired little fuck takes one more photo of me I’m gonna shove that camera up his ass”

Charlie hissed. It wasn’t rocket science to understand why pictures were being taken of the southsider. Even at the tender age of fourteen he stood out with his tall, lanky frame, sleepless face and decked out in gang colours and a flannel shirt. Plus he had the added benefit of sitting next to the bombshell that was Jade Taylor, which really was an excuse for anyone to take photos.

“Yeah.”

Jade had barely registered Charlie’s comment. She heard his voice and it sounded like he was complaining. Truth be told, the blonde was trying not to speak because she was still pretty frustrated at not only the dumbass, whose head was thicker than a milkshake, sitting next to her, but also at Poppy not going further. Maybe it was a mix of both. Or maybe Jade was just impatient overall.

All of it were valid possibilities, but she liked putting the blame on her sister and brother.

Jade turned to face Charlie, practically ignoring anything that wasn’t in front of her blue-green gaze. “Be straight with me: everything good?” The blonde asked. She was never known for her scalpel approach and, honestly, if he wasn’t suffering from some bad, life-ending disease, she was going to lose it, even with someone as close to her that Charlie Decker was.

”Besides that twerp taking pictures of me and the fact that ReyRey Gonzalez may murder me if I fuck up tonight? I’m copacetic baby”

Jade was one of the extreme few that Charlie was able to let his guard down with. A lot of the time he felt like multiple different people being pulled in multiple different directions. Somewhere between school, home, the southies and the serpents, there was a real Charlie Decker, he just wasn’t sure who that was. He felt however that the closest version was the one he was when he was with Jade, Poppy and Decky.

”The way you’re looking at me, I’m guessing I’ve already fucked up somehow?”

What was your first clue?

Jade couldn’t help but allow a chuckle escape through her cherry lips, one that was admittedly proud in the way her lips curled into an almost-smirk. “Fucked up is such a harsh way of putting it.” One moment of looking at each other and Jade just nodded. “But yeah, you might’ve. But unlike with most things, you’re not out of the match just yet, Charlie.”

Sure, Jade might be known for her brutal honesty and even bitchier personality, but when it came to two of her closest friends, she wasn’t like that. She was supportive of what she knew would be an amazing thing to happen, but since neither were willing to take that first step, she’d have to shove them into the deep end and hoped they wouldn’t drown. Like stated, Jade never knew the meaning of careful scalpel. It was best she just took a mace or a warhammer to their face.

“You got knocked out, but it’s only the first round, Charlie.” Jade blames her uncle for her recent obsession with boxing. “Where do you think you went wrong?”

”Did I not pay her outfit enough attention? I mean she looks, I mean she’s amazing. How else do I even say it?” For someone who loved the written word, Charlie was pretty useless at using words of his own volition. He was not well versed in the ways of the woman and it showed quite obviously. He had seen how the jocks like O’Hara and Belmonte played hearts like fiddles and all Charlie could play was his PlayStation. ”Help me out here JT”

"Well just because you asked so nicely." Jade half smirked at Charlie.

It made her happy that he wanted to right his ignorant wrong. It showed that not everything she and Maxine worked so hard in trying to accomplish went over his head. Sure, it would have been ideal if Charlie realized tonight wasn't some ordinary night and that poppy, of all people, rarely ever put in the effort to look as hot as she did tonight. It wasn't as though she wasn't beautiful, because she was, but for as long as jade had known her, she never went this far.

So maybe that's where most of Jade's frustrations came from.

"First off, if anyone looks different than they normally do, especially if it's in a way that’s significantly out of the norm for them, throw them a compliment. Maybe 'hey you look nice'. Sure, it might not seem like much, but trust me it will go a long way. Jade looked at Charlie, holding her gaze on him for a few seconds. "Also maybe don't ignore her presence? Let her know you acknowledge her. She put in the work so pay attention to her. Really see her. Coming from a girl, we are pulling double duty. So if we put the effort in, then boys not at least acknowledging us is, like, twice as bad on us, ya know?" Jade was confident that Charlie knew by now, even when she helped, she didn’t sugar coat it. If she was going to be of any help, better to rip the bandaid than make him suffer.

As Charlie did his best to soak in the info that Jade was giving him, he switched his phone back on and watched it light up with a series of messages that took his anxiety and multiplied it ten fold.

R: Lexington and 5th. 8pm. No Later

Mom: Love you sweetie, have a nice evening. Be safe

H: She looks pretty tonight. Don’t fuck it up”

He exhaled sharply before stuffing the cell back into his jacket pocket and checking the clock on the Monarch’s wall. In that moment, even in a crowded room such as the one he was in, Charlie felt alone. He locked his fingers together across his knees and squeezed his hands together as if he was trying to force the pain out through his palms. ”I really don’t wanna mess this up, JT. Any of it”

And it was in that moment Jade might’ve realized that her usual blunt force approach to giving advice might not be well suited for Charlie. She couldn’t help it sometimes. It was how she came up. Growing up around hardened bikers who showed as much emotional vulnerability as a porcupine with their pins up, ready to attack. Her uncle was the softest person she knew and even he had trouble opening up when she was around.

Granted, Jade was fourteen and not many thirty-five year olds were willing to open up their deepest, very adult secrets to a teenager.

But the Charlie next to her was a different case and maybe Jade had to use a gentler touch.

As she had been somewhat frowning the entire time that she looked at Charlie, she put a reassuring hand on his shoulder, kicking it upside down into a half smirk. “Now, don’t beat yourself over all of it, alright? You haven’t wrecked anything up. So stop saying you did and put your head in the game, Decker! You still have plenty of time to bring this back around and might even get what both of you want.” She half-grinned and lightly punched his shoulder.

”Thanks Jade”

Some might sit and wonder how anyone could be friends with Jade Taylor? The suicide blonde was a living, breathing smoke show and any man would find it hard to resist succumbing to her charms. Charlie? He had seen the girl behind the makeup and the leather a long time ago. He knew her heart and her soul and that was why he could see past the superficial things that his peers would drool over. Beyond the Courtney Love look, there was a girl whose light was much brighter than maybe she herself thought it was. She was an illuminating presence in the darkness that was the life of Charlie Decker.

He glanced across the court once more and was greeted by the immaculate visage of Penelope James on her way to rejoin them. He looked over to Jade for reassurance and inhaled sharply once again. ”I got this”

A @metanoia & @Venus Collaboration || Featuring Marco Brady & Lanie Lancaster
________________________________________________________________________________

The memory of hers and Mordechai’s first time together came rushing into Elaine’s mind like an overflowing river, flooding the young woman with feelings she wasn’t prepared to handle. While she had been prepared to face the death glares and snide comments from her former cheerleading friends, she hadn’t imagined in her wildest dreams that Decky would choose this moment to return to town. By now, she was holding Roddy’s hand so tightly she was surprised he hadn’t said anything. She knew that her face was probably reflecting the many feelings wreaking havoc in her chest, but keeping a stoic expression was the least of her worries. She was angry, she was upset, she was hurting, she was betrayed. Let the whole world see it.

In the past, Marco wasn’t known for his awareness. And he sure as hell wasn’t all that known for taking into account social queues. Maybe you could chalk that up to Marco being blissfully aware of how sometimes people wanted some privacy and how sometimes, even if he didn’t intend to, not knowing when to leave and when to just stay put made people become frustrated with him. It led to some roll their eyes when they had to leave instead.

But that was no longer the case. Now Marco understood when he needed to take the neon sign hint that his friends wanted to be alone.

Or, honestly, just wanted to have a private conversation.

And when he let Jade, Poppy, and Decky -- that was his name, right? Kai or something like that. Honestly, it had been so long since Marco had seen his face around Edenridge that he found himself blanking on his name when he was limping down the bleachers.

God, why did Marco decide to climb so high? With how his bones were cracking and his limbs likely cursing him all the same, he shouldn’t have done it.

But it was okay. All he had to do was go down about five levels and he could limp safely on the ground. How Marco managed to do that without dropping the box of cannolis that Danny entrusted him with was beyond any scope of comprehension Marco, past or present, was capable of. What mattered was that he could walk.

Or, well whatever Marco’s one-step limp could be called.

“Hey, that's actually clever. Marco One-Step Brady! I can start a troupe. We can tour Boston and make some money.”

Oh, the things Marco did to entertain his mind as he somewhat aimlessly wandered around the gymnasium. He had lost sight of basically everyone he met when coming here. He didn’t see Danny anywhere. He definitely lost sight of Jade and the others as the bleachers were kind of blocked by the mess of former students of their senior class, who Marco remembered being a lot shorter.

Then again, him having a slouched stature nowadays, maybe that’s why he thought that.

Anyway, he had to sit down soon. His legs were starting to ache again.

Guess Marco One Step isn’t ready for the stage yet.

Marco took a quick glance around, initially because he wanted to find a seat, but what he got was something better.

Next to his PT bud was one of his closest friends. Right behind his family, Danny tied with two other people: Roddy Callahan and Lanie Lancaster. Roddy and Marco were recovering at the same hospital and had their physical therapy aligned around the same time, so they had a lot of time to get to know each other. Their love for sports was honestly what really made Marco a fan of his. Of course, he didn’t like that Marco called soccer football and American football the fake news of football.

And next to him was Lanie.

Lanie was just...God, where did Marco even begin? How many times had they been there for each other? How many times had Marco confided in her? How many times had they pigged out to whatever he felt like cooking? It was impossible to list just how much he loved her. Lanie was his platonic soulmate and that was a fact. He was Rylie’s godfather-- and whenever she needed him to watch Rylie or if she had to do anything, Lanie always knew that she could leave the little girl with him. She was as important to him as her mother was.

And when he saw the look on her face, that cocktail of pain and heartbreak and sheer anger, he didn’t even think about how much his legs were hurting nor how many steps it was from where he was and where she was, he just limped to her.

And every bone that could ache did. But Marco didn’t care.

And then he was in front of her, offering her not only a smile but he lifted up the box of cannoli’s up to her as if offering her it. “You look like you can use some comfort food.”

Lost as she was in the memories of a happier time, it took some time for Elaine to acknowledge Marco approaching her. It wasn’t until he heard his soft voice accompanied by the kindest of smiles that she was able to snap out of her thoughts and be gently brought back to reality. In response, Lanie offered her best friend a tearful smile and nodded in agreement with his words. She needed a hell of a lot more than just some comfort food, and Mac knew it. She turned to Roddy to politely excuse herself before letting go of his hand, locking her arm with Marco’s, and slowly walked off to a place where they could talk more privately.

“You have no idea how thankful I am for your friendship right now, Marco,” Lanie told the boy sweetly. She could feel tears of gratitude starting to pool up in her eyes again, so she looked away and blinked hard in an attempt to get rid of them before looking at her best friend again. The last thing she wanted was to let any of the vultures in this room see her cry-- grateful or not. “Are you okay, though? Do you need to sit down? I saw you were limping a little bit. I don’t want you to get hurt in any way!”

“Oh, don’t sweat it! I’m okay!” Marco waved away Lanie’s concern.

But it was well-placed because he was aching all over. Maybe it was his athletic perseverance that sometimes had him almost sabotage himself. If he was with Danny right now, not only would he catch it, but he always had a way of getting Marco to do what was best for Marco, even if Marco didn’t like it at first.

And maybe it was his stubbornness that made him not want to do what might be best for his own physical well-being, but he couldn’t let that plague his mind right now, not when it seemed like Lanie was in need of that special brand of sunshine that Marco Brady was known for.

Choosing the lesser of two evils, Marco temporarily switched positions by putting most of his weight on the leg that wasn’t as bad as his recently recovered one. “So!” He grimaced slightly, though he turned it into a forced smile. “What’s going on, Lanes? Did you want to go somewhere and talk? I mean, you can have as many cannoli’s as you want if you don’t feel up to talking.”

Lanie shook her head at his offer. As delicious as she knew cannolis were, mixing the sweets up with the alcohol and unpleasant feelings bubbling up in her stomach didn’t seem like a sensible idea. Throwing up and embarrassing herself tonight wasn’t part of the agenda. “I’m okay, Mac. It’s just…” She trailed off again after a long sigh, shifting her eyes down to stare at the shiny purple lacquer on her toenails. When she finally spoke again, the higher pitch brought upon by aching heartbreak and nervousness rang clear in her voice. “When Roddy first asked me to come, I told him he could piss off. I had no intention of being anywhere near this building tonight. But when he explained his reasoning for wanting to be here, I couldn’t say no. Even with the way things ended between us, I just can’t let Rod do anything that could hurt him if I have the power to intervene or help him somehow, you know? My conscience doesn’t let me. I love him: he’s my daughter’s dad, and I would do anything for him. I just didn’t think he was going to be here too. If I knew he would be, I wouldn’t have come.”

He bit his lip almost as a gut instinct when he not only heard the pain in Lanie’s voice, but his legs aching aside, he felt it. It was in his stomach, it tossed like he ate a bad batch of tacos, like someone had actually punched him, dug their fingers into his entrails, and got them twisted up for good measure. But he also felt it when he just looked at her. The way she was talking about Roddy, he found himself just standing there, alternating from good leg to bad to good and he wanted to say something, but by the time she finished, all he could do was grab her hand.

“Lanie…” He squeezed it, half-frowning, half-smiling at her. He knew who she meant. He didn’t have to ask because he had seen Decky earlier before he ached his way down the bleachers. “We...we can leave. Or go elsewhere that’s not here if you want.”

Lanie shook her head again, turning to Marco with tears in her eyes once more. “I can’t leave Roddy here,” she whispered sadly, looking back over her shoulder at Roddy and spotting him already caught up in conversation with Kylee Grimm.

Although Lanie was aware that there was nothing between them beyond a platonic friendship like the one she and Marco shared, seeing Roddy and Kylee together felt like another kick to her already injured stomach. Flinching slightly, Lanie looked at her own best friend again. “Even if that Kylee girl is here and is probably very eager to take my place, I can’t just leave him, you know? I mean, he asked me to come here with him for a reason, right? If he wanted her to be the one he came here with, he would’ve asked her. Right?” Elaine knew that she was purposely hyperfocusing on something extremely meaningless, but she didn’t care as long as it kept her mind from trailing back to the presence of her ex-boyfriend.

It wasn’t that Marco felt helpless, but any attempt he made to help her seemed to fail. So he had to go back to the drawing board. “Well, you know that’s simply not true. You could never be replaced. You two share something that nobody in this entire world could ever breach.” Marco’s eyes darted over towards Kylee and Roddy, even if it was for a quick moment. There was nothing negative in the way he looked at them. If anything, it was more of a visual reminder that they were, in fact, over there. Going back to Lanie, he continued, “But he did ask you to come with him, so that has to tell you something.”

The blonde nodded, and for the first time since her eyes had landed on Decky, she gave Marco a small smile. “Did I tell you he said he’d move to Texas with Ryls and I?” She confessed, that smile still playing around on her lips. “I’m trying not to get my hopes up, of course, but it would still be a really nice thing to have him close enough to be an active part of Rylie’s life.”

“No, I don’t believe you ever mentioned that,” Marco admitted, almost laughing for a second. He had known Roddy as the type to never make empty promises. That was something that Marco had always admired about him. Regardless of the situation, he always got the sense that he was a man of his word. So if he said that to Lanie, especially if it seemed that he wanted to move with them, then it must be true. “Roddy has never been the type to say something if it wasn’t true. Or at least, I never got that vibe from him. And I have to imagine, too, that being near you and Rylie is probably one of the most important things to him right now. My gut is telling me that he means this.” Marco always went with his gut feeling.

Before Lanie could get a word out, Mei Ramsey’s voice suddenly echoed across the room, aggressively demanding for the culprit behind this unwelcome class reunion to reveal themselves. As if on queue, the lights in the gym suddenly went off, and Lanie instinctively grabbed onto Marco’s arm. And when Allison’s voice began to ring out from the old building’s sound system, followed by the interchanging images of her deceased best friend along to the tune of “Summer Long Gone”, it took every ounce of the blonde’s strength to not succumb to the sudden wave of grief and pain that was threatening to send her funneling to the ground.

“Wait, is that…?” Marco’s voice was low and especially low compared to the voice playing loud enough that everyone heard.

It took him almost five seconds to register whose voice he heard and his immediate thought was about why Allison Davies’ voice was playing. He didn’t know her well enough to be bothered by hearing her voice. Granted, he was barely a freshman when she died, so Marco wasn’t engrossed in that side of Edenridge High’s social circles. He just knew that Lanie and her were close.

And when he began to think about it, he felt her grip on his arm tighten. And then it got tighter and tighter. It was more than just your usual comfort squeeze. Something about it alerted Marco to look at her and he just said “it’s okay, I’m here” without even thinking. And he said it loud enough so that she not only heard him, but made sure to wait until she was looking at him (or in his general direction) so that she knew he meant it, too.

For what seemed like the millionth time that night, Lanie’s eyes had filled up with tears. Frankly, she was starting to feel pathetic at this point. She hadn’t cried this much since her breakup with Roddy months ago. Thankfully, she had Marco to keep her somewhat grounded to reality. She barely managed to mouth an inaudible thank you to the Brady-Castillo boy when another piercing voice rang across the room.

This time, it was Jillian the one making the scene, clearly intoxicated and seemingly taking a page out of Mei’s book judging by the amount of threats and profanities coming out of her mouth. As much as she wanted to feel sorry for her old friend considering the terrible cards life had played her, there was a secret part of Elaine that couldn’t help but feel relieved that she had extricated herself out of the situation when she did. When Roddy had broken up with her, with no warning, it had left Lanie feeling destroyed. Jillian’s presence, with her happy relationship at the time and her budding pregnancy, had only served as a bitter reminder of what the blonde had lost. She had found herself resenting the redhead more and more with each passing day, until she finally decided to burn all the bridges that could potentially trigger her in one way or another. And although she felt guilty about severing ties when she heard about Jill’s hardships, the redhead’s current behavior was a sign that Lanie had done the right thing. She had her own messed-up life and an infant daughter to worry about. Getting sucked into Edenridge drama of any sorts would be counterproductive in her quest for self-betterment.

Next thing she knew, Jillian was name-dropping Roddy in her rant, and Lanie immediately felt herself tense up. It was one thing for Jill to go around being angry at the world (and rightfully so). But it was another thing if she tried to use the innocent Roddy as a punching bag, because this would mean that Lanie would get herself involved. That, of course, would not be in anyone’s best interests.

Everything was so tense right now. Everyone was on edge.

And it wasn't like Marco didn’t understand it. He was feeling similar emotions. But he felt somewhat disconnected by the strife a lot of people were feeling. Lanie had Decky Boaz being here, Roddy, Roddy’s being blamed for that Alison Davies audio, especially since it was his surname that was showcased, and just...everything else. And then there was Jillian O’Brien, who Marco could only surmise was drunk.

But then there was Marco. He felt like he didn’t really belong here, not really. The only reason he was here was that Danny more or less forced him to come. And even then, he couldn’t think of a genuine reason why he was here, but he knew why he was staying.

For her. His eyes went to Lanie. She needed him more than ever.

As they would both watch Danny, Roddy, Jill, and that Kylee Grimm girl leave the gym, there was a part of Marco that was relieved. It wasn’t so much for him, but for Lanie. The ease that the absence of their forms would bring had to be at least something, right? But then he thought about those numbers and if those four were getting heated over something and then they left, what if they were onto something?

“Maybe...we should follow.” His suggestion came after several moments of being silent. He kept his eyes on Lanie. He understood that what he suggested was practically asking her to do something that he was assuming she didn’t want to.

But deep down, the young man also knew that he wouldn’t leave her side. It didn’t matter how much his legs hurt or were hurting, just because it would be hard for the both of them, didn’t mean they’d have to do it alone. “I know you don’t want to, but if I learned anything from this past year, running away from what might hurt you the most will only delay your suffering. You have to face it head-on. Just know that whatever happens, I’m not going anywhere. Sure, I might not be as directly affected, but you have me, Lanes. You have me until you don’t need or want me anymore.”

Now that the majority of the event attendees had left the gym, Lanie finally felt safe enough to allow a few of the tears she’d been holding back to run down her cheeks. “I’ll always need you, Mac. Always,” she told him softly, her heart swelling with the immense amount of love and gratitude she felt for her friend.

And like the four that went before them, albeit at a slower pace because Marco’s leg was really starting to give him problems, they went towards the haunted halls of Edenridge. Who knew what ghosts they might find there, but what they both knew was neither of them would tackle it alone.

Walking through the once bustling halls of his alma mater was a strange and almost chilling feeling. What was once so full of life and energy now was painted in darkness and a sinking sensation. This was not the place that sat resolute in Roddy’s memories. A fresh coat of paint and a few classroom remodels after Charlie’s rampage was a failed attempt at reviving a school that was already on life support. Had it been up to the students, they likely would’ve signed a DNR.

A thousand and four questions were flying around Rod’s head as he approached the west wing of Edenridge High with his ragtag group of fellow sleuths behind him. What was it they were going to find, if anything at all, in Francis’ locker? Surely anything pertaining to Allison would’ve been long gone since people would’ve used the locker in the years after the elder Callahan’s graduation? Who was making them go on this twisted scavenger hunt? And more importantly why? What did any of this have to do with Decker and his diary?

So many questions.

Mei was all but ready to slap a bitch. Aaron had slunk off somewhere, no doubt to try and cover his tracks in some kind of business he was involved in but the goth girl was sure that he wasn’t the person behind what was happening with the letters. He didn’t have the smarts for it. She was following Callahan and his crowd closely. If they found anything she would latch onto it like a dog with a bone. This was Allison they were talking about. Mei had spent much of her youth emulating the brunette girl, trying to be just like her. She always knew there was a dark side, of course there was, there always was yet that didn’t matter. Ally was more than just the Queen of the school. She was someone’s sister, someone’s daughter and dying the way she did, it wasn’t right and it wasn’t fair.

Like some sort of bodyguard, Mei brought up the rear, her dark eyes looking at every corner with the false chemical courage she and Jillian had imbibed in pushing her forward. She was nowhere near as fearless as people assumed she was and the booze was helping to keep that facade going. When they reached the locker, Mei had no choice but to wiggle her way to the front; she was fairly small after all.

Roddy took a deep breath and began to turn the dial as instructed: 16-7-5. It felt like an eternity but finally there it was, the click of the lock. Danny was right! When the green steel door opened, the speakers kicked into life once again as a haunting song started to play. Rod, doing his best to annoy the creepy soundtrack, lifted up his phone and turned on the torch to peer inside. Starting at the top of the locker, he traced the light down every inch of the frame to see if there was anything written or tucked away. Finally as the torch illuminated the bottom of the locker it revealed a sunflower and what looked like a photograph.

Picking up both, he handed the yellow plant to Jill. ”Anybody got anything on Allison and Sunflowers?” Before he could continue, his eyes were drawn to the contents of the photograph. It was very obviously a party, a hardcore one by the looks of it. His gaze focused on two men in the foreground, they were deep in what seemed like a romantic embrace. Roddy recognised one of the boys immediately; it was Francis. Turning over the photo, there was something scribbled on the back.

Francis & Russ

13 Carlisle Avenue

”Wait…Fran wasn’t….he was still in the closet at this point…why is he?… Flabbergasted; Roddy turned to the crowd and showed them the back of the photo. He was trying to remain calm but the deeper this went, the worse he began to feel. He glanced at Lanie seeking some kind of reassurance. ”Does anybody know what address this is?”

A @Venus & @LovelyComplex Collaboration
Featuring Caitlin Cleary & Niles Sinclair

When Niles Sinclair had asked Caitlin Cleary to pick him up from the airport so they could hang out in the city, the redhead was more than happy to oblige. After getting wind of how the last Decker letter was inviting all of its recipients to the old Edenridge that evening, the young woman had been eager to get away. Unlike some of her former classmates, Caitlin had no reasons, interest or even the slightest bit of curiosity to attend such a morbid event. Charlie’s death hadn’t affected her in the same ways it had her old schoolmates. She didn't have to spend months in rehab like Marco Brady and Roddy Callahan. She didn’t have to walk with a cane for the rest of her life like Aaron Cox. She didn’t get shot in the neck like Mei Ramsey, or have to watch a loved one die like Kylee Grimm, Jillian or Decky Boaz. Hell, she didn’t even have to live with the guilt of surviving such a traumatic event when her loved ones hadn’t, like Lanie Lancaster, Natalia Belmonte and her best friend Danny Belmonte struggled with. When the bullets were flying across the high school, Cece had been an hour away, safely sitting beside her mother inside a waiting room at a doctor’s office in the city. Because of this, she had always been considered one of the luckiest girls at Edenridge. The last thing she wanted was to tempt fate by doing as that letter said.

So while a handful of her ex-classmates were waiting at the old gymnasium for anything that could help their healing journeys, Caitlin was anxiously standing at the arrivals section of Boston Logan International Airport, her blue eyes peeled for any sign of her long-distance friend.

Waiting for his luggage, Niles Sinclair, the legacy of Sinclair Health, peered down at his wrist watch. As he waited in anticipation, having gotten off a direct flight from Chicago to Boston, he thought about the girl waiting for him. In high school, they were not in the same social circle and rarely had many encounters to talk to one another. On top of that, they both had introverted mentalities and avoided people, for their sanity, which left them little to no room to find each other.

As an underclassman, he was getting himself into fights, detention, and spending time with his ex-best friend. Funny how Natalia could drop him like yesterday’s trash all because she caught feelings and he didn’t. He thought he did a good thing, stopping their arrangement because he knew he wasn’t in a place to take things further than sex. But to Natalia, he was a piece of shit who didn’t care about anyone but himself. That whole relationship taught Niles that casual sex comes with a price, especially if it’s with someone whose the only person that tried to understand his grief at the time.

As an upperclassman, he had gotten in such a bad place mentally that he started convincing himself the best solution was him being dead. The moment he and Natalia broke ties, she thrived and went into the light, which was an obvious sign that he weighed her down. He was a burden and because of him, she would never be popular. Niles knew he made the right decision but he hated that his actions hurt her to the point that she felt the need to treat him like he no longer existed, like he was invisible. He deserved it. He knew it. That doesn’t mean it didn’t hurt any less.

As you can see, at the time, there was too much turmoil in Niles to notice such a beautiful soul that was Caitlin Clearly. So, they didn’t get close until after graduation and he was delighted that he took the chance to message her first. Past aside, he had been waiting to come home for longer than he’d ever admit. They had been talking for about six months, but even before then, they were liking each other’s pictures and showing subtle signals that they were interested.

When they started video chatting with one another, that was a game changer. He knew the moment she spoke, she would be the sweetest melody to him. Her words were calming, yet full of drive and focus. Her presence was intensely bright and full of emotional worth. There was so much passion behind this woman that he was completely and utterly enthralled. From that point on, he knew they had a tangible thread even before they spoke. All they needed to do was look at each other and it was clear as day the attraction they shared spoke enough for them.

Scary really, how one moment could change everything. What would’ve happened if he never sent that message? Would he have been more open to romance from someone at his college? He didn’t know what went over him that night. All he could think of was he wanted to know the woman whose smile had a hint of sadness to it. Who was Caitlin Cleary and why hadn’t he seen her like this before? Most people wouldn’t have noticed that detail because in that specific picture that drew him in, she looked happy and surrounded by love.

Somehow though, he thought within the family portrait, it was a Christmas picture in front of her family’s tree, she was incredibly lonely. She looked sad or maybe that’s what he wanted to believe. He wanted to believe there was someone out there that could relate to him. That there was someone who understood that no matter how many people there were around you, there was always this sinking feeling. He was emotionally starving for real companionship, which caused him to fixate on her while he studied to become a doctor.

Even so, he was absolutely terrified of emotional vulnerability and knew he was still holding back. With Cece... she made him feel like he didn’t need to carry the weight by himself, that he didn’t need to walk alone. This was a feeling he hadn’t experienced before because even while he had Natalia in his life, he still felt incredibly lonely.

With his suitcase rolling on the ground, Niles strode to the arrival area, taking extra precaution to contain the overwhelming nervousness and excitement he was feeling. Years ago, he wouldn’t have noticed her. Now all he could do was think about her. While he had no reason to mask his emotions, he still struggled at being fully transparent with others. He knew how to smile more than he ever did growing up and he knew how to use his charm to navigate through business and social events.

Still, he struggled at lowering his shield, trusting his strengths, and unlocking the door of his own cage. He wasn’t nearly as bad as he was during the peak of his grief, but if he wanted to survive this world and look ahead, always ahead, he had to pick and choose who was worth his time and who deserved to see him for him. He didn’t want just anyone to know how much emotional pain resided in him, but with Cece, he could see himself embracing the future freely, in a healthy way.

Stopping in his tracks, he felt the oxygen leave his body when he saw her. Finally. They could see each other. Niles would never claim to be a perfect lover, since he was heavily flawed, but here he knew he would work to prove himself and hoped she’d let him do just that. Caught off guard at how breathtaking she was in person, Niles found himself standing there like an idiot and just staring.

God, she was beautiful.

Focus.

Snapping out of it, he called out, which was probably the loudest he’s ever gotten in his whole life (he wasn’t one known for getting loud): “Caitlin!”

When Caitlin heard her name being called out, she immediately froze. Wide-eyed and frazzled, she looked around in the general direction of the voice she would recognize even if she was blindfolded. Eventually, she caught sight of the person she had been waiting for, and felt her legs turn into jelly underneath her for all the right reasons. Pictures and video chatting didn’t do Niles Sinclair justice. He hadn’t grown a significant amount since high school, but that didn’t take away from how graciously puberty had treated him in regards to everything else. His jaw appeared stronger and more defined, while his lanky frame had filled out with muscle, bulking his figure up in all the right places. His sense of fashion had also evolved in a positive way, with him swapping out the hoodie he always wore back then for a more stylish, favorable ensemble. He seemed to carry himself in a different way, too: taller, straighter, with confidence and determination. But even with all of these changes, it was still that breathtaking smile, and the gentleness behind his green eyes, what had truly captivated Caitlin’s heart.

From there, Niles focused on catching up to Cece without making it seem like he wanted to go into a full on run, just so he can pull her into a tight embrace. There was no need to come off too strong. As he got closer, he searched in her eyes to see if she’d let him. He wasn’t going to grab her if she didn’t feel comfortable, but he hoped she wanted to because he sure as hell wanted to.

Thankfully, he didn’t have to wait long for her response. Before he knew it, the beaming redhead was throwing her slender arms around him and wrapping him up into the tight hug they had been so desperately craving for months. She closed her eyes and allowed herself to simply melt into their shared embrace, taking in the smell of his expensive cologne and the feeling of safety provided by his strong arms.

When Caitlin had initially received Niles’ requests on her social media platforms over a year previously, she had hesitated in accepting them. It was no secret that Niles was (or had been) Natalia Belmonte’s best friend. It was also no secret that Talia wasn’t fond of her in the slightest, and the last thing Cece needed was to give Danny’s sister more reasons to hate her. But the more the redhead thought about it, the more she wanted to kick herself for even taking Natalia into consideration in the first place. High school was over: Talia wasn’t the center of the universe anymore, and all of them were adults with more important things to worry about than former classmates adding each other on social media. So, after a few more minutes of mulling things over and coming to a decision, Cece took a deep breath and accepted every single one of Niles’ requests. It wasn’t as if she was going to actively interact with him anyway, right?

Wrong.

Neither of them knew how long they stood there, arms tightly wrapped around each other like long-lost lovers. But finally, it was Caitlin who moved back just enough to be face to face with the young man who had made her believe

“Hi.” she breathed out softly, staring up at Niles with big, sparkling blue eyes while still keeping her arms locked tightly around him.

This. This he could get used to. All they needed to connect were their eyes, no words. Even if they couldn’t speak, their feelings would speak for themselves, staying all the same. In the heat of their embrace, there were welding sparks. Tracing his fingers on her back, he gave her a cheeky smirk, “Hi.” He had imagined this moment multiple times a week but nothing beats the reality. His imagination would always get carried away, but here, he wasn’t thinking of the what ifs. His mind was enraptured by her and all he could see was the moment. Them, together.

Instead of going for her lips, not necessarily ready to take that step, unsure of how far they were going to take things today, he leaned in and let his lips alight on her forehead. With his lingering kiss, causing passersby to stop and look in awe, he held her there like a desperate prayer for them to succeed.

Niles wasn’t great with saying how he felt, but he could show it, in his own way. To him, this told her he cared about her and he didn’t want her to get hurt. This told her he was serious and wanted to protect and respect her, not make her feel like a sexual object. This told her from this point on he would get in between anything that tried to bring her discomfort and harm. This told her… a promise.

Delicately, he pulled away and decided there was no better time than now to ask her the question his whole family had been waiting for. “Caitlin Cleary, please don’t feel pressured to say yes, I just… need to know. I can’t say I’ll be perfect, I’m still working on things, but what I can say is I’ll be there for you. This right here has made me realize I really don’t want to let you go. What if I don’t? And give you a place in my heart permanently? What I’m trying to say is...”

Cece had opted to remain silent as he spoke, her smile still in place as she listened to what the dark-haired man had to say. Her heart swelled with joy with each word he spoke, each sentence resonating with her in ways she couldn’t quite explain. The anxiousness in Niles' voice was evident, and Caitlin understood that better than anyone. Among the many things they had in common, the fear of falling in love and getting hurt was certainly high up on their list. Both had loved and lost important people in their lives, and the remaining guilt that haunted them to this very day served as a warning to think twice before allowing someone to get so close to them again.

But, with her, Niles had nothing to worry about. No matter what path their relationship took, Cece would make sure that he was always certain of that.

Eventually, when words began to fail him, the redhead decided it was her turn to express her own feelings. But, as everyone knew, actions spoke louder than words. And before she could stop herself, Caitlin placed a hand on the nape of his neck, pulled his face towards hers and pressed her soft, crimson-colored lips to his.

Before he could ask her if she wanted to be his girlfriend, Niles found the space between them non-existent. Her lips had sealed the deal. In that moment, he knew their chemistry was steeped in a passion that ignites. Feeling her lips, he could see why a kiss was something eternal. Something dangerous. Something that could make you think that there was forever, even after death. This was more than he anticipated.

Honestly, Niles was shocked how good kissing Caitlin felt, like he should’ve expected a kiss with the prolonged stares, but he didn’t really go into this expecting one, let alone imagining how it felt. There was no point in getting his hopes up if it led to a dead end. Still, he wasn’t going to complain. Emotional and physical intimacy aside, there was an electric shock radiating from the both of them, coursing through their bodies and straight to each other’s lips.

Interlocking his fingers with one another, his rough stubble scratching against her chin, Niles shamelessly pulled her in, deep, direct, and undoubtedly desperate. Amorously, he held her in place and for a long suspended moment, their uneven breathing rocked one another, in tandem. This was all she needed to do to get her feelings across and he would lead. He just needed a silent confirmation that she wanted him to. Clearly, she did.

When he thought he had come with a clear head, and so far, he was starting to believe he did, a question unexpectedly crossed his mind. Is it okay to be happy? Niles saw his mother’s teary smile as she was being rushed to the car. The butterflies turned into a gut-twisting knife feeling as he entertained the idea of letting his mother go.

If he committed to Caitlin, he felt like he was leaving his mother behind. Even so, how would he ever be happy if he had his mother’s ghost constantly hanging over him? For the first time ever, he was tired of compromising his happiness because of his grief. For now, he built enough strength to let his mother’s memory fade so he can be present and mindful to the beautiful woman that stood before him.

Releasing Cece’s lips, catching his breath, Niles’ green eyes softened and focused on her eager gaze. Unapologetic to their surroundings, and with enough passion built up, he unhesitantly asked, “Be mine?” Those were the only two words he needed to use.

Cece vehemently nodded with the brightest of smiles. “Yes! Yes! Of course!” she said excitedly, trying to hold back the happy tears threatening to spill from her blue eyes and roll down her flushed cheeks.

In retrospect, Caitlin had come into this date with the mentality that it was simply a much-awaited get together between two long-distance friends who had been connecting with each other for six months. Even with the undeniable attraction they felt towards each other and the lighthearted flirting they had exchanged, she had never imagined that, less than five minutes before their first meeting, she would be accepting Niles’ proposal to be his girlfriend.

To other people, this entire exchange would seem rushed, impulsive, and maybe even a little bit reckless. But in Caitlin's mind, everything felt right. It was as if the missing pieces of the puzzle that was her life were finally coming to place, filling up the empty spaces of her heart with a magical joy she never thought she would experience again. Her only hope going forward was that she’d be able to make her boyfriend feel the same way.

An @Aces Away, @LovelyComplex, & @metanoia Collaboration || Featuring The Lost Trio
____________________________________________________________________________________________

As a Southie who had been in Juvie while the cheerleader- who seemed to enrapture every other group in the gym- died, Mordechai was immediately disinterested in the little audio-visual show that took place about her and her mysterious death. Ha, like there wasn't enough death in this town without throwing in mystery. Insert Jazz Hands here. But it obviously riled everyone else up enough to head to some locker that Danny Belmonte recognized the combo to.

Which. Stalk much? Why were Southies considered more fucked up again?

Shaking his head, Mordechai glared at the retreating backs before nodding at Poppy and Jade, still holding Poppy to his side like a lifeline. Likewise, he had a feeling he wasn't getting that hoodie back from her. Given the fact that it was his only other long sleeved piece of clothing he had aside from his old Serpent jacket, he was oddly okay with losing it.

"We lurkin' after them like the shadow creatures we are?" He asked with a small smirk, remembering how easy it was for the Southies to hide and jump out at unsuspecting Northie students, eliciting screams and jumps of impressive heights. Those times seemed so much more complicated, yet simpler in a way. He couldn't explain the twist of emotions he felt when he remembered those two and a half years he was out before Charlie snapped. The smirk he wore turned into a grimace and he turned his head away. "Looks like Belmonte was onto somethin'."

Jade peered her head in the direction of the fleeting mob of Northies, especially those who seemed especially affected by that show they were blessed/cursed (depending on which hill you stood on). But as noted by Decky’s less-than-enthused reaction, Jade also didn’t feel obligated to follow the herd of Northies. “Yeah, it seems like it,” she commented absentmindedly.

In true Poppy fashion, Decky would not be getting back his hoodie. With his hoodie resting on her shoulders, and Charlie’s hoodie hiding her frame, she felt completely and utterly safe. It felt like the two boys she loved the most were shielding her from what was to come and she liked that notion. She was able to press on, well, sorta, because Decky was still holding onto her tight. If they followed the group, he would have to release his grasp because walking in tandem with him as he squeezed her to death would end up being a difficult task at hand.

Squirming in his arms, Penelope looked between her friends and struggled her way out of the hold. Once she was in a standing position, she dropped down. After landing on a lower bench, Poppy took her friend’s hoodie off and tied it around her waist, stating her claim over it without saying it outloud. When the last of the northies trailed out, she turned on her heel to look at her best friends and scowled, “What the fuck does Charlie have to do with Francis’ locker?”

Her dark eyes burned with passion and determination, and if Jade, who had watched her friend’s journey, was paying close attention, she could see Penelope James changing right in front of her. Slowly but surely, the James girl was burying her grief and entering her anger phase. She was ready to face her demons head on and her friends could come join her or go fuck themselves. “If this is going to prove that Charlie didn’t lace Allison’s drugs, which he DIDN’T, we need to go. Allison was a sad girl who was scared to graduate. She knew there was nothing more waiting for her. She was at her peak. And that made her turn to drugs. But no. No one ever talks about that. All those motherfuckers—”

Poppy took a moment to gesture to the exit of the gym where every Northsider left from, putting an emphasis on all those that led to the deaths of many who attended Edenridge High. All those motherfuckers. They failed them. Everyone, including her, Decky, and Jade, failed them.

Them as in: Charlie, Allison, Maxine, Danny, Amanda, and all those that died that awful day— this whole damn school failed them. “—talked about the boy that gave the most popular girl drugs, putting all the blame on him. No one talks about the damage that girl went through. No one talks about WHY Allison turned to drugs.”

After her tangent, Poppy crossed her arms and expectantly looked at her friends to get off their asses so they could get to the bottom of this. She didn’t care who got hurt at this point, she needed answers and her friends could be with her or they can get out of her fucking way, “Well?”

Mordechai grinned and rolled his eyes as Poppy staked her official claim on his hoodie before he really tuned into what she was saying. She was right of course; everyone talked about Charlie like they knew him, talked about all the Southies like their lives were just a tv show for Northie entertainment, never mind whether the truth was in there or not. He had let Poppy go easily, quickly recognizing the girl getting riled up and knowing not to try and tame the energy. Poppy could always be damn terrifying when she wanted to, and it had taken Mordechai a little longer to learn than most. He's definitely learned by now.

"I ain't bout'a pretend that I care about that Allison girl," He spoke up, taking the first steps after pulling himself up off the bleachers. "but you're right, Street Angel, ain't nobody here allowed to put any more dirt on Hard Times' name, I-" his voice trembled before he cleared it, getting it back under control. "I failed him in high school, I wasn't the Brother I was supposed to be because I was too focused on consequences." he looked into the eyes of his girls, an apology there for them alongside the one for Charlie.

"Fuck consequences now. I'll take 'em all to get some damn clarity with him."

Both Decky and Poppy became fired up, something that she was particularly shocked to see in Poppy. Of course, the blonde knew her sister was adamant in getting to the bottom of this whole mystery. And of course, she wanted to know as well. That wasn’t what kept Jade from externally showing it. She couldn’t say what it was exactly.

But what she knew for certain was that, no matter how she was feeling internally, doing this for Charlie -- that is, finding out the truth and truly seeing if they could clear his name -- that’s what was most important. And as she stood up, looking between both Poppy and Decky once more, where a vulnerable loss of life had been present on Jade’s face and in her blue-green eyes, a sense of determination and conviction to see this through had taken its place. “For Charlie,” she found herself saying almost as a call to arms like she was Braveheart or some shit.

“For us.” Penelope gently corrected. While clearing the stains in Charlie’s name was a good motivator, she knew they all needed this. They needed closure so they could stop clinging to the past and all the guilt. This would be the first step in the right direction and it was time for Poppy to take the lead. And so she did. After rushing down the bleachers, she looked back at them and adjusted her face mask. As much as she wanted to get ahead of herself and run to the next clue, she knew she was just on an adrenaline high and who knows if being amongst the crowd once more would put her body through a state of shock. But at least… She had her friends and they had her.

Instead of going ahead, she waited for them to join her so she can latch onto them both once more, “Fuck consequences.” Poppy reiterated Decky’s words. Together, they could handle whatever was ahead of them. As long as they had each other, they would be fine. No matter how daunting the truth may be, together, they’d be okay.

Together.

"For us." Mordechai reiterated, following after Poppy with one last look to make sure Jade was also moving. The quick walk down the halls was silent, and Mordechai could feel himself tensing up and pulling ahead. He didn’t like the way the school felt, and he really didn’t like the moldy smell of the damp hallways; his throat was feeling tight and he could feel a migraine coming on. He wanted this night over already. He wanted to go curl up with Sonny in the Serpent’s Den at EoS, he wanted to beat the shit out of whoever was doing this, he wanted to catch up with Poppy and Jade and maybe even visit Danny’s grave. Maybe even visit Charlie’s.

He wanted to cry.

Instead, he and his girls made their silent way to the rest of the group that was huddled around a photo with an air of confusion, and he caught the last bit of conversation. Unable to quell his curiosity, Mordechai came up behind Jill and peered over her shoulder to see what was causing such a fuss.

"The fuck was your brother doing in a Serpent house, Callahan?" He spoke up from directly behind them, eyes sharp on the recognizable background in the photo. "Not for nothin’, but 13 Carlisle ain’t exactly a Northie-friendly residence."

Big Rey Gonzalez had just passed his sixtieth birthday and age had seemingly transformed him into an introspective man. Definitely in the last few months he had found himself drifting further into the warm embrace of nostalgia.

The Southside Serpents we’re not his legacy despite what people may think. The Triple S was formed by his father Gory when he had gotten back from the Vietnam war. Along with some like minded forgotten sons, they were men who did not recognise the “home” they had returned to. They found a home on the road and riding their bikes. Outlaws yes but a makeshift family there had never been one closer. Whatever the Serpents were now, they were Gory’s legacy. He would be remiss not to wonder if his own father thought of him and his younger brother Pedro like Rey did his own children, Reynaldo Junior, Aleyda and Mikhael? Big Rey considered them his legacy, not the club.

In some ways, he was jealous of his younger brother for escaping. His memory may have been fading but he still remembered the day that Pedro announced that he was moving back to Mexico with his mother. She had offered Gory an ultimatum; get out of the game or she was getting out of his life. Needless to say, by that point Gory Gonzalez did not bleed red anymore, he bled green. God, Rey was so proud of his little hermano, Pedro then. The way he stood up to the man even being as young as he was at sixteen. He wished that he had that kind of courage. Even though their paths diverged, Rey never lost touch with Pedro. He was now the owner of a nice restaurant, married to a gorgeous wife and had a son named Enrique that was making waves in the music scene. Whatever pain Reynaldo had suffered, he considered it worth it for Pedro and his family to lead a blessed life.

Far from blessed was his own family, cursed like most who dwell within the cobbled streets of Edenridge and it’s deeply fractured south side. His natural born son, ReyRey as most know him, was a loose cannon in every sense of the word and he held more power in his hand than just a gun. Aleyda had been through such troubles in her young life, more than any young woman should. Poor Mika, Big Rey took him in to protect him but was he a failure at that too? One wondered.

”You ok Pop? I got your message” Emerging into his fathers beautifully maintained garden, ReyRey scanned the area quickly, as if looking for threats before taking a seat opposite his old man at the family picnic table. ”Mom not here?”

The hulking elder man shook his head. ”She’s with your sister at her place. Something about a cake, I don’t know” He took a sip from his coffee, a roast lovingly prepared by his friend Beau and dropped off by Sly. ”That’s a nasty wound, kid. You get that doing the Lucha mask gimmick?” He let out a slight chuckle, his baby boy did love the theatrics of the business. Sighing through his nose, following his laugh, Big Rey glanced down at a pile of papers that lay in front of him before sliding them towards his son. ”I won’t take up too much of your time mijo but we got some problems that you need to know about”

ReyRey began reading the pages that his senior had slipped to him before letting them slip from his fingers and back into the table in a breeze of lackadaisy. ”Why does this matter? Everyone in town has been getting these letters. It’s just some creepy fuck looking for a rise”

”Maybe; but just maybe they know the truth about what happened that night. You might want to think about that and act accordingly, ReyRey. That one is on you”

R2 hissed through his teeth. It was five years ago and this was still hanging over his head like a guillotine over a war criminal. He had to think deep on this. He looked back to his father as he began to fiddle with the gold chain around his neck, a nervous habit of his. The chain was a gift from Aleyda, a birthday present for her big brother when she realised that he liked his bling more than his Dunkin’ Doughnuts. ”You said problems, what else you got Pop?”

”I heard a rumour, we may get a visitor soon. A real heavy player from Baltimore, goes by Soulman. You heard of him?” When his son shook his head, Big Rey continued. ”Treyvon Marcus; a nasty asesino. Apparently deep into that voodoo shit. I’ve done a few deals with him in the past before he got locked up. He’s got a kid who just got signed for the Patriots, so there’s talk of him coming here for obvious reasons. Keep your ears to the ground, mijo. He’s a worker but one devious motherfucker”

A dim light switched on inside ReyRey’s brain. He began to somewhat remember the name of Soulman. He remembers a story that Mikhail once told him of a player who was so savage and efficient that even the Nation was scared to take him down. A soul taker. ”Anything else?”

”Diablo Hermosa” Rey stated in quote possibly the most blunt fashion possible. ”He’s getting out. It’s likely he’ll be back in town by month's end. Do not touch him, Reynaldo. You hear me boy?” He did not want to say these words. We’re it up to him, the subject of this conversation would be dead and buried and forgotten but such was life and the way the Lord wills it. Monsters are fearsome and strong. This monster had protection.

”I can’t promise that. He hurt the familia. He deserves death”

“He does but taking him out will cause too many issues, mijo. You’re playing football, Reynaldo. This is a chess game, patience is a virtue and a skill”

Father and son looked at each other for a minute in silence. Tension and rage whirled around them like a tsunami of machismo. This was no surprise. ReyRey was his fathers son but he did not hold his fathers cool temperament. He was a being of pure and unbridled passion and rage. ”If I see him in the street, he’ll die in the street like the vermin he is” He spat out into the floor and immediately regretted considering how much time his mother spent on her garden. He locked eyes with his father and the two men sat in a silence and understanding that was just so thick.

”The world is yours, mijo. Just don’t let it eat you alive”

There were many things that were getting on Jillian’s nerves at the moment. Nerves that should have been dulled at this point to anything other than finding the sick SOB that was putting out these garbage diary pages and force-feeding them every gymnasium floorboard the assembled mob could pull up. But there were too many hooks pulling up things that she wanted to forget. Lanie showing up and acting like she didn’t need to be here. The mocking tributes to Alison Davies. Danny. Everything Danny. She spent so long trying to forget the past that having the various ghosts burst through the fog she spent the entire day carefully crafting were getting to her. But nothing could distract her enough from what was happening. This Danny was far different than the one she last spoke to in anger and hurt.

Not that she had changed her tactics much since then. Danny did though. He was never the take-charge serious type before… well, he stopped being a lovable doofus and became an untrustworthy asshole. She still didn’t see any sign of the latter yet. But at least he was leading a party out of this god-forsaken gym. Right now, the Edenridge gym was the last place Jillian wanted to be in the world. Aside from maybe the Pinehurst gym. She still hated them too. So she followed the growing Scooby squad around Danny as he led the way to the lockers to see if his hypothesis was right.

Walking the hallways again was giving Jill the shivers. The recent nightmares weren’t helping matters either. The tiles still looked the same, alternating pale and dark as they did when she got the up close look at them when she fell. Every time. Seeing the floor and the wall of lockers in reality were reducing any effect her liquid courage was having. She looked back, as if to try and find an exit, but only saw Mei walking behind her. Mei wasn’t scared. Why would she be scared? She wasn’t reliving those horrors over and over. She was reliving different horrors over and over. At least she was doing it by choice. Jillian swallowed a gulp as the grip on the nearly-empty bottle turned her knuckles white.

It turned out Roddy was going to be the one to open up his brother’s locker. It made sense, even if for some reason it was Danny that had come up with the combination. Jillian thought that she couldn’t get more tense than she already was but hearing the clicks of the lock seemingly amplified by the hollow resonance of the halls was ratcheting up the pressure in her mind. Yet Roddy was able to open the lock with the given numbers. Jill half expected a boom or a jump scare to pop out of the locker when Roddy opened it.

Instead, there was just more music. Fucking A/V nerd was really enjoying themselves with this soundtracking.

As the Callahan boy searched through what used to be his brother’s storage space, the only things he found didn’t seem to pertain to him. Roddy pulled out a photo and a sunflower, a wilted remnant of former cheery glory. How apt that he handed it off to Jillian. She stood there holding the plant, trying to figure out what it had to do with Allison as Roddy requested, but she was drawing a blank at the moment. I don’t know what sunflowers had to do with Allison. I don’t remember her being gung-ho about them. She didn’t have earrings or anything…”

Roddy held up the photograph though, and being right next to him, Jillian was first to grab that from him as well. She shifted the flower into her bottle hand and stared at the photo. She barely recognized young Francis Callahan but got there after a few seconds. Forgot how hot he was back then… Flipping it over though, her heart continued to sink. This hook was barbed, and it was pulling her back down with ease.

Jillian crashed back-first into the lockers and slid down to the floor, the bottle making an empty thud on the ground as she stared at the back. It was Francis, and some dude named Russ, but that wasn’t the key detail for her that triggered her fall. But it would circle back in a second.

The date was ominous enough. Everyone in Edenridge knew that day. That was the day that the innocence died. When the picturesque world of high school was shattered like… well Jill at that moment. In more ways than one.

It was the night that young Jillian O’Brien got her first taste of high-school partying. It was where she got her first taste of alcohol, courtesy her sister grabbing some Breezers for the rest of the freshman cheerleaders to partake while the seniors and juniors went for the harder stuff. She could still remember the syrupy-sweet strawberry flavor that seemed to herald sweet success for a fleeting couple of hours.

It was an address that she knew very well, having stopped by the place more than a few times lately. Whenever she thought confronting the ghosts head on would convince them to leave her alone for a moment’s peace, and when that didn’t work, to drink until she forgot they were haunting her. There was one ghost in particular she wanted to try and talk to and exorcise, and yet she couldn’t be shaken. She was here tonight after all. And that picture on the front may explain the unfinished business.

Jill muttered softly at first to herself. ”That was the night…” She looked up to see the rest of her former classmates staring at her. It was probably a mix of 20% confusion, 60% pity and 20% anger. She couldn’t tell where in particular the emotions were coming from, but as her glassed-over eyes stared up at everyone, tears forming, breakdown surely coming, she did her best to stammer out as she handed the photograph off to her partner-in-crime, Miss Midnight.

Say something! Everyone’s looking at you to say something!

Jill closed her eyes, trying to flush the sadness so she could explain herself. “That was the night…” she said louder this time, but still at a whimper’s decibel level. “While Francis was in the arms of another man… that was the night. That was the place. That’s when Ally died… There was no respite now. No courage. No bravado. No swear words for defense. The depression and regret was fully in control and there was nothing Jillian could do about it. ”That’s when it all went downhill…” The flower was getting watered and the bottle started to regain some volume as a hundred bottles’ worth of liquor started to be shed for the first time in a while.

As Mika sat on the stoop of the Gonzalez front porch, he watched cars with mismatching sections of paint and one to two cars without rims pass the house and members of the Serpents acknowledged Mika with a nod with a somewhat content expression on his face. He was out there for the past thirty minutes, just ten more than when Natalia Belmonte left.

And for those thirty minutes, he had been staring almost aimlessly, deep in thought, deep in a stasis that seemed to be only enhanced every time he found himself drifting into his own mind.

Mika wasn’t the type to let himself think about the past too much. It wasn’t as though he was immune to it, but regrets rarely played a factor into who Mika was. One might say he was like Dominic Torretto in that way as he truly embodied the philosophy of living life from point A to point b. One might say this was due to the nature of the Southside life and the life that Mikhail Zima had known as long as he could remember.

Mika stood up and took a few steps away from the stoop he spent the past half hour sitting on. As he got up, his ass felt numb from being mostly still for so long, so he had to walk it off. He pushed the gate that surrounded the front yard and it made a creaking noise when he pushed it open. He walked towards the left and heard it naturally crash against the latch. The echo it made grew fainter the further Mika was from the house.

He went only to the corner and just stood there, hands in his pockets. In one pocket, he felt his keys and moved them around to pass the immediate time; in the other was his phone. After a few moments, he pulled his phone out. Seeing the time only reminded him of where everyone probably was right now.

And that made Honey Badger slightly ticked off.

Why care about the past like that? Mika thought it was stupid. Mika thought that being so caught up in whatever secrets may or may come out was idiotic. Knowing what people hid wouldn’t bring back the dead and it wouldn’t remove the guilt some felt for that damn shooting. And it sure as hell wouldn’t bring back Kai’s brother nor anyone else who suffered.

Yeah, Mika was now in a bad mood.

“Goddamn it all!” He cursed and made his way back to the house, though he wouldn't go back inside.

As he hopped into his Tacoma and it roared down the street, Mika blared whatever was on his preferred rock station. He blared it so loud that the custom bass-heavy speakers vibrated in and out of his truck. He took chances with the lights; speeding past yellow to red lights, green lights to yellow, and so on and so forth. In doing so, he not only made it out of Fear Grota territory without anyone actually knowing that Big Rey Gonzalez’s adopted son had done what nobody dared to with Heisenberg, Mika took the chance because it was the quickest way to get to the Northside.

Honey Badger really didn’t care.

In the back of his mind he was counting his blessings. The fact remained that it could have gone terribly horrid for him. Even if he had his 9mm in his glove box and a rifle in his trunk (covered up by a blanket of course), it was still a risk some might call not worth the reward.

Mika drove down Main Street at a controlled speed, no longer needing the urgent speeding one might find on abandoned backroads by street racers. Or from one adrenaline junkie who favored risk over controlled substances. As he did so, the late night that blessed Edenridge’s marketplace with minimal citizen presence made it apparent that the stench that fear and paranoia brought from that cursed shooting and its anniversary.

Perhaps that wasn’t the majority opinion, but it was Mika’s interpretation of it, stemming from his own personal feelings about the tragedy.

God, how he hated weakness in the people he shared this town with.

That selective disgust carried Mika into a blind drive down main and only would come to a stop when he pulled in front of the old stomping ground. He had parked across the street and mulled over just exactly what he should do. There was an undoubtedly large presence of people he knew, including Natalia. Just about everyone he knew was in there and he contemplated going inside. He contemplated indulging in this wild goose chase of trying to find out the culprit behind the letters.

But the longer he sat there in his truck, looking at the parking lot and centering his gaze at the main gymnasium, the less it became about wanting to know what happened and more about he became justified in his opinion that everyone was still trapped in the past. Nothing good came from being involved in the events of the past.

Cementing his resolve, though he wouldn’t drive off immediately, Mika would look at his phone. Scrolling through a few apps, Mika contracted his resolve and found himself on a page. And he saw a geotagged location.

How surreal it was. He rarely went on Instagram and thus his activity was practically nonexistent post-high school, so of course, those he followed and those who followed him remained the same. It allowed him to occasionally check up on people that might not be on good terms with. And because of this, there was one person he wronged that, no matter how hard he tried, Mika just couldn’t forget about her.

“Boston Logan International Airport,” he muttered.

That wasn’t very far from where he was.

As he spent a couple of minutes contemplating, something that Mika has been doing frequently in recent weeks, his mind was made up when he started up his truck.

How contradictory was it of him to shame those who clung to the ghost of Charlie Decker, yet Mika is doing the very same with someone he claimed not to care about. He always wondered what could’ve happened if he didn’t choose the coward’s way out? He could even hear their voice when he decided to not return their feelings.

Or rather, when he lied to their face.

He still didn’t know if he would return them, but in the year that’s passed, Mika’s changed...somewhat. He still has those demons that like to come to the surface sometimes. It’s a constant struggle, but he’s better than he was a year ago.

As he continued to drive down the I-90, those thoughts kept persisting, so Mika blocked them out to the sounds of Machine Head. This is the End proved to be an almost biblical soundtrack for what was undoubtedly a mistake in the making, but he didn’t care. Mika knew what he was doing even if everything in him that from a year ago was telling him to turn back.

He took the nearest exit that led him down a road. He took a left and circled around the terminals. There were four and, honestly, Mika was having an internal struggle about whether or not he should do this. It wasn’t so late that he couldn’t go back home and forget any of this happened. It wasn't as though anyone of importance saw him. And by circling around, which at this point he’s done so twice, he was wasting gas. If anything was going to make his decision, it would have to be something so glaringly obvious that he couldn’t just ignore it.

Glancing at his phone and coming to a stop across the way from Terminal C, Mika just waited.

I shouldn’t be here, he thought as he didn’t budge.

In an evening where Mikhail had spent the majority of it mulling over how everyone he knew was still stuck in the past, here he was waiting for a sign from his. He needed to know that he was doing the right thing.

Soon, he learned God had impeccable timing.

Coming through the entrance, hands interlocked, there he saw Caitlin Cleary. She was as sexy as he remembered. But she wasn’t alone. As he gripped the leather covering of his steering wheel, Mika gritted his jealous teeth when he saw who she was with. IT didn’t matter to him that she was happy.

“Niles Sinclair…” Mika cursed his name into oblivion, curses that his father taught him. He cursed it with green envy as they kissed, the grip on his steering wheel getting so tight that parts of the covering ripped.

Mika would follow them wherever they went. Tonight would not be a celebration for anyone.

A @LovelyComplex, @Venus, & @metanoia collaboration
Featuring Kylee Grimm, Natalia Belmonte, Danny Belmonte, Marco Brady, Lanie Lancaster

________________________________________________________________________________

With Roddy leading the charge, Kylee Grimm tailed the group, walking in a slower pace so she could watch the scene unfold from behind. She wasn’t focused on the ominous presence the old hallways she used to walk gave nor was she paying attention to the words being thrown here and there by her peers to break the ice. She kept her eyes on Danilo Belmonte, who had caught her eye when he mentioned such a detailed fact about the charming ex-boyfriend of Allison Davies.

Crossing her arms and leaning on a locker not too far from the main investigative group, she listened to her best friend try to justify the contents, all the while smirking at the Italian boy. Honestly, it would make sense. Such a strong, grounded boy like Danny… Why wouldn’t he have a secret? Even strong boys like Danny have deep wounds.

It would make sense if there was more behind the veil, seeing how he had a twin, who was audaciously open about her sexuality. Hilariously, Mr. and Mrs. Belmonte still didn’t get the hint. What was it that Father Joe said during one of the many services Kylee attended with her dear daddy to keep up their image? Ah, yes. It’s not that belief is blind, it’s just that belief blinds people.

Danny was good at hiding behind a handsome smile, but oh how Kylee wanted to know his deepest, darkest fears. How fun would it be to break his hard exterior and find his soft center. How fun would it be to peel the layers of this once-upon-a-time-star and discover what makes him tick. What drives him mad. How fun would it be to see Danny cry. Perhaps, she was getting ahead of herself but oh how she wondered.

When Roddy mentioned the polaroid and how Francis wasn’t yet out the closet Kylee reactively sighed at how naive her best friend was. See, Roddy, that’s the thing about being in the closet. Sometimes you choose to hide in plain sight, sometimes you bottle it all up until you explode, and sometimes you get tired of playing pretend and decide to get lost in the moment.

In the picture, Francis looked free, which made her believe the latter for him. He wanted to get lost in the moment. Kylee’s story was a little different than his, seeing how she had no idea what she liked until Mei kissed her. Even so, it was nice to see Francis not burdened by chains. Being in the closet… meant many things, depending on who you ask.

Her own journey aside, her gaze glinted at Danny. Was he sweating? Did he notice her staring? Was he hoping everyone forgot about him knowing the combination of some hot jock? So many questions and so little time. When the Southsiders walked past her and Decky chimed in, Kylee broke the distance between her and Danny. Like the curious minx that she was, the mayor’s daughter tapped on his shoulder, ready to pester him about a certain topic.

"The fuck was your brother doing in a Serpent house, Callahan? Not for nothin’, but 13 Carlisle ain’t exactly a Northie-friendly residence."

“It is if you know the right Southie.”

The familiar voice of a female voice echoed across the halls of the building, followed by the sound of heels clicking against the concrete floors of the old high school. With every step they took towards the light, their features became more distinguishable. The fair-skinned newcomer was of above-average height, slim figure dressed in a white terrycloth, spaghetti-strapped romper paired with a Chanel belt and knee-high, black leather boots. Her slightly wavy, dark brown hair cascaded down her shoulders, resting a few inches above from the middle of her back. A pair of intense blue eyes rested underneath thick, groomed eyebrows, and below a dainty button nose were a pair of full, terracotta-colored lips. When grouped together, the features in question correspond to one prolific, young Edenridge woman: Natalia Belmonte.

Smirking, the former queen bee of the Edenridge class of 2020 took position across from Kylee Grimm and the rest of the cheerleader, crossing her arms in front of her chest. “What’s going on at 13 Carlisle? Hopefully nothing, because I just left the place,” she told the group, putting up her blue ombre vaporizer up to her terracotta-tinted lips, taking a long, lazy drag from it and exhaling a cloud of cotton candy scented smoke away from the faces of the group around her.

Rolling her eyes at the new arrival, Kylee’s mood was immediately soured and she didn’t waste any time to make a slight, “Of course you did.” Kylee and Natalia’s relationship was complicated and at this point in time, Kylee wanted nothing to do with the good-for-nothing bitch. “If you came on time, like the rest of us, maybe you would know some context.”

Natalia could only grin at the dark-haired girl's response. She should’ve expected this type of reaction from Kylee Grimm of all people. "Baby girl, I had other things I needed to do before I came here. I'm sorry if that bothers you so much.” she immediately responded in the most unbothered, nonchalant way she could.

It wasn’t a secret that Nat and Ky had been involved in a rather torrid and passionate affair-turned-relationship during the last leg of their senior year. And it also wasn’t a secret that things between the two of them hadn’t exactly ended on the best of terms. While Tal had gotten her exit ticket out of town when she earned her highly coveted athletic college scholarship, Kylee had been forced to stay in Edenridge when she didn’t get accepted into hers. Instead of being honest about her feelings, the mayor’s daughter had opted to be a child. Immediately after going on vacation with her family, she’d ghosted Natalia with no warning or explanation. And being the temperamental, impulsive bitch she was whenever hurt by someone she loved and trusted, Nat had sent the other girl a long, heated break-up text before blocking her from all methods of contact and social media accounts. By the time Kylee returned home, she was dead and buried in Natalia Belmonte’s eyes: nothing more than a petty, bitter ghost from the past.

After the girls’ quick exchange, Jillian muttered something under her breath. When she spoke louder, Kylee looked away from her ex to her friend. Pouting at the sight of how pathetic Jillian had become, Kylee attentively listened to her broken words, hoping this would be a good distraction from Natalia.

Honestly, if Danny was on good terms with his twin, he would defend her from Kylee. If he was on good terms with Jillian, he would go to her side and help her stand. But in this instant, he couldn’t find himself caring for either. Knowing Natalia, she deserved it and as much as he still did care for Jillian, he had enough of her for one night and wasn’t going to throw her a pity party. Mei was beside her, she could be the support Jillian needed. Clearly, his old friend wanted nothing to do with him, so there really wasn’t much he could do.

As for his sister, Natalia had a way of making problems when there were none, and getting on the bad side of the mayor’s daughter was just asking for trouble. Then again his sister liked getting a rise in others so she probably liked it. Instead of acknowledging Natalia, since she didn’t give a damn about him and ignored him while they lived in the same household, he added, “Viv carried her polaroid a lot back then… she was probably there.” Well, it would be silly if his older sister wasn’t there. She was one of Allison’s best friends, after all.

If this truly had to do with Allison and how she died, this meant it had to be an event that caused a ripple effect. What happened on that day? “I can’t say I knew Allison well, but wherever she went, everyone else followed. December 4th. I think I vaguely remember it. At least everything before the party… because I kinda’ got—

“Wasted. And yes, that’s the day Allison died. The game. The cheer competition. The after party. I’m guessing our answers might be at this address. But what do the sunflowers mean?” Kylee scanned the crowd to see if anyone had any clue for that one. It was clear both Kylee and Danny were not in the mood for Natalia, and both in their own way chose to act like she wasn’t even there, giving her a taste of her own medicine.

____________________________________________________________________________________________

____________________________________________________________________________________________

Lanie, who had purposely been standing a few steps away from the crowd doing her best to fly under the radar, raised a timid hand and suddenly piped up, “I know what it means.” And when every eye in the hall turned towards her, she elaborated. “The Davises used to call Ally their sunflower because it was her favorite flower since she was little.”

As much as he empathised with their grief over what might’ve been triggered since the sound of Allison’s voice filled the silence of the gym, he wasn’t affected in the way they were. And that was because Marco didn’t know Allison like they did. But that didn’t mean he couldn’t feel the shock they all felt. And what was probably the most important thing, Marco was here for them: Lanie, Roddy, and probably most of all, Danny. And maybe it was for that reason why he didn’t have anything to add. He just stood there, next to Lanie, looking around, though mainly looking at the others’ reaction to what Lanie had just said.

“Sooooooooo… Does this mean we have to go to 13 Carlisle and find a sunflower or something to figure out what’s actually happening here with all this nonsense?” Natalia pointedly asked the group, taking another long, deep drag from her vaporizer.

“I don’t know, weren’t you just there? Can’t remember something as simple as sunflowers or were you too busy fucking a snake?” Kylee spat when Natalia decided to chime in. If there was one thing she didn’t understand, it was why she was even here. It wasn’t like she liked Allison or anything. She was too caught up with that twink kid to hang with the popular kids.

No matter how hard she tried, Natalia couldn’t help but snort and shrug her shoulders. She knew the smug expression on her face was bound to infuriate Kylee further, but she wasn’t about to just let her keep mouthing off without doing something about it. “You are absolutely correct, Kylee. The snake that was screwing me kept me way too busy to look for something I didn’t even know I was supposed to be looking for. But, please, carry on.”

With Kylee’s sudden outburst, Danny’s expression became a little shooketh. More out of astonishment than anything. It seemed she didn’t take well to the break up with his twin. He didn’t know the exact details of their fall out, but damn, it was clear that Kylee was hurt and couldn’t stand being near his sister. And then, Natalia instigated instead of calming the already furious brunette. “Natalia, no one needs to know your business.”

Natalia raised an amused eyebrow towards her twin brother and shrugged. Dumping her for Jillian and Caitlin was one thing, but siding with her ex-girlfriend? Really? “I was just answering KyKy’s question, Danilo. Chill.”

Unfortunately, Kylee was already in full reactive mode. “Not surprised, since you’re such a fucking slut.”

Okay.

No.

“Woah, woah, woah! You two. Stop.” Danny made sure to block the snickering Natalia from getting anywhere near Kylee, before adding, “This isn’t about your guys’ baggage. Okay? This is about Allison. If you don’t care, then just go home. You’ll be doing us a favor because honestly, making this about yourselves is just kind of stupid.”

Thoroughly entertained at this point, Natalia turned her attention to her twin again, but not before obnoxiously blowing a cloud of vape smoke right at Kylee’s face. “First of all, I wasn’t the one who came in taking jabs at people because I’m still butthurt they got into college when I didn’t. And second of all, who are you to say I don’t care? For all you know, Allison and I had something-”

“Let me stop you right there!”

Elaine had watched the scene between the two girls with a growing sense of frustration and a deep-rooted anger. The only reason she had set foot in this decrepit building in the first place was to help Roddy find closure from the traumatic event that had marked him for life. Unfortunately, as it often seemed to happen in her life whenever she attempted to do a good deed, it all went to hell. Not only had she had to deal with her ex-friends shooting daggers at her across the room and the ex-boyfriend who had abandoned her without so much as a warning. But now she had to deal with Natalia dragging Allison into whatever feud she had with Kylee Grimm?

Not under her watch.

Fuming, Lanie stepped away from Marco to stand her ground in front of Kylee and Natalia. The height difference between her and the two other girls was noticeable, but it was the last thing on the blonde’s back. When your actions were fuelled by anger, things like that were the least of your worries. “I don’t know what ‘issues’ the two of you have going on, but they need to stop right now. I didn’t leave my baby with her grandparents and come all the way here to hear you guys bickering about some bullshit that happened years ago, or to have Allison roped up into it. All I want to know is what actually happened to my best friend, and who’s the asshole who thought it was a good idea to pull this little stunt. Can we at least find out that much before the two of you start fighting again?”

As much as Natalia wanted to tell Lanie that nobody forced her to leave her kid to come here and play mediator, she figured it was best to finally hold her tongue. Elaine Lancaster and her weren’t exactly friends, but she respected the other girl enough to refrain from doing or saying anything else that could potentially hurt her.

As such, the dark-haired woman raised her arms in defeat. “Hey: that’s fine by me, Lanie. I’m sorry if I upset you, sweetheart.”

“Yeah, you don’t have to worry about a thing because I’m going home.” Kylee had drowned out most of Lanie’s words because after Natalia clapped back and mentioned she might’ve had something with Allison, she was no longer mentally into the case. Looking at Roddy, she frowned, “Sorry, Shaggy, but I can’t stand being here anymore.” Mei and Jillian would find their way home or call her when they needed a ride, so instead of saying goodbye to anyone else, Kylee started walking back where they came from. She was absolutely done with this, she’ll just find out everything another day.

Deeply sighing, Danny made his way to the closest locker and leaned his back on it. Today was exhausting. He had no more words left in him after hearing Lanie spill her heart out. She made it clear why he had to be here. For him, it didn’t matter if this hit home or not. He wasn’t close to Charlie like the southies were. He wasn’t even that close to Allison like all the cheerleaders were. Still, this was his home and he had to be here. If not for closure than to support those where he could.

He did care though because Francis cared about Allison. At one point in time, Danny would’ve done anything for Francis. In addition to that, although he didn’t know Charlie himself, he felt like that kid didn’t deserve this. He did a terrible thing. Don’t get him wrong. Danny should be mad about the first day of senior year, but he couldn’t. Tonight wasn’t just about Allison. This was about all of them and why their town suffered so much.

A few long moments of forced, awkward silence later, Marco let his eyes go clockwise around the group. Between his ex and his twin, Lanie and the now departed Kylee (not to mention the others who joined him on #teamspectator), he felt an incredible amount of tension rising along his spine, causing parts of his forehead to sweat just from the nervousness he felt. But at the same time, Marco was relieved in a weird way. Considering the way things could have gone, perhaps what actually did happen was the lesser of two evils.

“So...” Marco’s voice trailed off into silence as he scratched the back of his neck. There was the subtle trace of a grimace on his face as the air wasn’t the only thing that felt tense. With everything happening, Marco had forgotten that his legs were really starting to ache past the point of being a minor annoyance. “What happens now?” Marco would ask as he limped over to the nearest wall, doing his best to first forward and crush what remained of the cannoli’s. He really needed to take the pressure off his leg. Unbeknownst to him, he had chosen a spot just a few feet away from Danny.

Allison would like to have said that she couldn’t believe her eyes; but she could. She had long suspected.

Tonight was supposed to be their night. She had finally won the Shining Star after four years and she had done so with a freshmen squad with little to no experience. He had netted a record for forty points against Pinehurst, a record which was doubtful to ever be duplicated. They were the celebrity power couple of Massachusetts and life was supposed to be good….

Yet there Francis was, in the arms of his teammate Russell Lord, embraced in a way in which Allison only dreamed that the golden Callahan would be with her. Her eyes drifted to the flashing light of a camera taking the ”couples” photograph. To the curly haired shutterbug, this probably wasn’t out of the norm, just a beautiful shot of beautiful people doing a beautiful thing. They probably didn’t realise that within the frames of that photo, they had caught the crumbling of her perfect world.

For the briefest of moments, her mind fluttered to the thought of photographs and their contents. So many little pictures in the world that sealed moments in time, both good and bad. She thought of how many of her photos were so posed, to portray the life that she wanted but not the life she had. She considered the strangers in the background, the ones whose lives she would never know but who were caught in that one snapshot, potentially in their own moment where their dreams came true or died a death by a thousand cuts.

Funny thing about photographs…

When Francis and Russell broke their kiss, his eyes finally met with Allison as she stood watching him. They did not exchange heated words of rage or passion, just a knowing stare. Francis was now free to be who he was supposed to be. Ally always knew that whatever they were and whatever the world's perception, they were not perfect. She loved him, in a way but their lives together had always been preordained by the law of Americana: the popular girl and the popular boy destined for each other from the moment the social hierarchy in the community was born. This was the end of that.

As the tears began to well up in her eyes, Allison spun on her heels and hurried out of the living room and into the decrepit kitchen where she had left her squad. She looked upon her baby team and the place they were in. This was wrong. She shouldn’t have dragged them here, especially not to this side of town.

“Go home, girls. Party is over for you”

She hurried past them and out into the garden, heading towards a small shed at the rear.

“FUCK!”

Charlie was panicking now; everything was fucked. He had spaced on Poppy and ReyRey was probably preparing to murder him in that moment. It was supposed to be simple really. An impromptu party at Rey’s needed a dealer, so Charlie was pulled off of the corner and placed in the garden to be the designated pusher. All he did was go to the bathroom and some drunken idiot had messed with the set up. Charlie didn’t know what had been mixed with what, which was incredibly dangerous. As he scrambled on the floor, trying to place everything back into its rightful container, the door to the shed swung open and in stepped the undisputed queen of Edenridge High.

”Well well” Allison placed her hands on her hips, still dressed in her cheerleading uniform she glanced at the boy on his knees, her lips into the slight wry smile that she was famous for. ”You Charlie? I hear you’re the man with the product tonight. Didn’t think I’d find it all over the floor though”

Jumping up to his feet while fumbling around with the chemicals he had pulled from the floor, the freshman boy threw everything onto the table. ”I…erm…yeah I got stuff but I don’t think I can give you anything, weed maybe? The stuff is mixed and I don’t think it’s safe”

”Honey pie” Allison placed a gentle hand on Charlie’s cheek; her almond shaped eyes singing to him as they did with everyone. ”Today has been a very difficult day for me. My Mom is a criminal, my boyfriend is gay, none of my friends are here, I didn’t get into college and I’m sleeping with my best friends boyfriend who also just so happens to be your fucking boss. I do not care about safe right now. Give me something that is going to help me escape this fucking town or so help me God, Charlie I will send ReyRey in here and you will be dropped in a barrel and buried alive”

Taken aback by the sheer forcefulness that Allison was showing, Charlie didn’t know what to do. ”Allison, I really…” Without another word, the cheerleader snatched away a baggy from the dealers pile and shoved him back into the table. She was half his size but that didn’t matter. There was no strength behind her action, only fury and rage. She stormed back out towards the house.

Charlie hurried out of the shed, nearly knocking his friend Jade out with the door. He looked towards the blonde, who had seen everything and began to run his hands through his messy dark hair.

”I think I just fucked up”

”I hear this is the room where it happens”

Allison entered the bedroom where ReyRey already was laying and she climbed up onto the bed and then straddled his waist. She shook the little bag that she had taken from Charlie before spreading it out across the Latino man's chest. ”No Vivia tonight”

”Not tonight, I’m all yours mami”

For a moment, she was transported back to the bathroom she had shared with Penelope James earlier that evening and reminded of something she had said to the younger girl ”It's all yours” Was it really? That was supposed to be the plan. Everything was supposed to be here but now, all she had was glory that would soon fade away. With every second, she could feel herself slipping, disappearing, being forgotten. Who cares anyway?

She bit her lip and began to move ever so lightly to tease the gangster. As ReyRey caressed her soft, silky legs, Ally formed lines from the drugs that lay before. She grabbed an already rolled up dollar bill and snorted the lines from R2’s chest. More and more she inhaled until it was all gone. She lifted off her shirt and leaned down to press their chests and lips together.

For the girl who had everything….

CRACK

“I’ll tell you what happens now” Mei bashed her weapon across the lockers with a loud thud. “We’re gonna go to Carlisle and we’re gonna burn the place to the goddamn ground!”

The Demon Dream Girl had finally had enough of all the bullshit. The collected Scooby crew had all known each other for twenty years; from diapers to high school and some beyond. They were being stalked by someone who had seen one too many horror movies and thought they were punishing these sinners for some perceived slight. Maybe they counted on old wounds and deep set issues to surface and prevent them from solving and surviving this little game.

She didn’t care for whatever nonsense was happening with Kylee and the recently arrived Natalia. Despite her own deep history with the Grimm girl and dance they danced together, tonight was about one thing in Mei’s mind; finding out the truth behind the letters and why someone was trying to clear Charlie Decker’s name. Regardless of whether the school shooter purposely laced the drugs or not, Allison wound up dead. Charlie wound up dead. Nine other people wound up dead and it all stemmed from this long bad night in December of 2016. Mei had long thought that had that night not happened, a lot of things that plagued those that were with her now may not have happened. What could’ve been…

Kneeling down to Jillian’s level, Miss Midnight planted a soft kiss on her red headed bestie's forehead. ”Come on, baby. We’re gonna end this” Getting back to her feet, she moved to the centre of the assembled group and looked around at them all with fierce determination. ”All of you need to stop. Drop your personal shit. If you wanna rehash who fucked who and who did what back in high school, the year book room is just down the way, say hi to Quinton Woods ghost for me. I’m going to Carlisle, I’m going to kick down the door and I’m going to end this. If you want to come with me, great. If not, I really don’t give a shit”

Somehow, someway Mei had wound up as the leader of the Merry band of misfits and had brought them the twenty minute walk from the remnants of Edenridge High and were now making their way over the thin line between heaven and hell as they entered the mythical south side.

OFFCOMERS GO HOME

That had been sprayed across a nearby billboard. It had been there forever, nobody knew who did it or even when it was put up there but there it was; the warning to all northsiders and outsiders, don’t go there. Crossing the literal train tracks that separates the north and south sides of Eden, one might think they were breaking through an invisible barrier. Trees that were once blossomed were dead, prosperous businesses now sat decrepit and homes of small families looked despondent.

Mei was well versed in urban legends, it was kind of her thing. There was one that explained why the south of town was the way it was. It started centuries ago, when the first families of what would come to be Edenridge settled into the area. The Massachusett Tribe welcomed the outsiders onto the land and they broke bread. Then something changed, something dark happened. Versions of the story vary from storyteller to storyteller but the common thread is that innocent blood was spilled and the land was cursed to be living death from then on. The founding families moved a quarter mile down the road and built north Eden, whilst the tribe built the south of the city. Most traces of the Massachusett tribe had all but faded into history, though Mei seemed to remember a class project years ago where Charlie claimed direct heritage to them. She always thought that Charlie might’ve believed the world owed him something for the lot he had in life; now seeing how things were turning out, perhaps they did…

Serpent jackets were everywhere and in a weird way, Mei felt that this was a good thing. As much as most people hated the southsiders for whatever reason they could think of at the time, they were a community that looked out for one another, not like the northies who in reality may have been the actual snakes. Mei had no issues crossing the line, she wondered how many of the Scooby crew did however. Some of them were Northies through and through and hated this side of town with a deep passion. On the flip side, they also had southsiders amongst their ranks who had to deal with crossing the border to even just go to school; Mei had never even considered how they felt. If the mystery man behind the letters and tonight’s scavenger hunt's goal was to shed light on truth, it was kind of working.

Like a scene from the 1979 classic The Warriors Mei Midnight and her gang of phantom thieves entered into enemy territory and came face to face with number 13 Carlisle Avenue. It was a somewhat large house, supposedly uninhabited yet it was a known party location. It’s large size and huge garden surrounded by dense shrubbery meant a perfect amount of privacy for the imperfect youth of their idyllic Boston town. As they reached the gate to the property, the porch light ignited into life and the front door swung open. Emerging from the shadows, the baddest man on the block, ReyRey Gonzalez.

“I’ve been waiting for you, kiddos. Let’s get this shit over with. Come in”

The Party: December 4, 2016, Edenridge, MA
____________________________________________________________________________________________

The more the party progressed, the more she wanted to crawl back into her shell. Her conversation with Allison gave her a high that only lasted as long as the game did. Unfortunately, the more she tried to smile and impress, the more he looked at his phone. That fucking phone. Before Poppy knew it, Charlie had left the game early, leaving her and Jade behind.

Penelope James wanted Allison’s courage. She wanted the head cheerleader’s lipstick to mask her weakness and create something that she wasn’t, which was a girl who had everything. Sadly, the more Charlie didn’t see her, the more invisible she felt. The more lonely she realized she was. Even here, at 13 Carlisle Avenue, where everyone was drinking and celebrating the Celtics win, she was alone.

Where did Jade go?

The Wallflower kept quiet, holding tightly onto her red cup of this strong, kind of disgusting punch. She found herself fading in the background, as she watched everyone enjoy themselves. Her green gaze went from Danilo Belmonte doing a keg stand with his seniors to Kylee Grimm taking selfies with the surrounding drunk people that she barely knew.

While Poppy did find it interesting how hard her peers tried to fit in with the upperclassmen, she also felt sad for them. In return, she felt sad for herself. Was this what highschool would be like for the next four years? All of them trying to fit in even if they were just kids whose only job was to be young and dumb? Danny would certainly end up puking all night and Kylee probably wouldn’t even remember the names of all these strangers she pretended to like.

Heavily sighing, Poppy took a seat next to two jocks, not even bothering to take in their features or anything. She sat there staring deep into the liquid courage she barely drank. Her heart ached. Penelope didn’t understand why no one wanted to be with her tonight. It was selfish of her to think Jade would spend this entire night with her, babysitting, when her friend loved to party, and it was selfish of her to think Charlie would prioritize her for once. The punch in her cup rippled as one of her tears fell into it.

No.

She wasn’t going to cry.

Nervously, the youngest James girl ran her finger under her left eye to make sure the water didn't cause her makeup to flake. Continuously, Penelope replayed Allison’s words from earlier today. There was only one her and she was unique. A fox even. Charlie was stupid. So stupid. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Why would she cry over him?

If Allison could hide her feelings through lipstick, so could she. At least that’s what she wanted to keep telling herself. The party had other plans for her as her thoughts were interrupted with a gentle and accidental bump. She turned to see the boys next to her only to realize how intimate they were. Together.

Francis was lost. Lost in the moment. Lost in his mind. Lost in his heart. He was trying to be what everyone expected him to be and had been for so damn long; it was killing him. He loved Allison, he truly did but just not in the way that it was supposed to be. For too long he had been Francis Callahan, the golden boy of Edenridge, MA. Pride of the Celtics. Few and far between were the moments he just got to be Francis Callahan; boy.

Something about tonight had inspired him. Maybe it was shooting for all those points? Maybe it was because he set a record that would stand for years? Maybe it was because he finally got to see Roddy enjoy himself for a change and not be so wrapped up in the fate of the world? Or maybe, just maybe it was because he knew that Allison, his darling sunflower, was going through a tough time and now was as good a time as any to finally be who he was meant to be? He wasn’t sure how it started or when it would end, all Fran knew was that he and Russell Lord, fellow jock and alpha male were ensconced in an embrace like he had never felt before.

“What is this, Russ?” The Butcher's Boy asked.

The golden haired Adonis who held him close, brushed his dark bangs to the side and smiled with a quiet confidence. “It's your prize, Callahan, one night only. A free pass to Nirvana.”

Frowning, Penelope couldn’t help but watch the boys feel each other, touch each other, kiss each other. Not only was she made uncomfortable with how close they were doing this next to her but she also found herself swallowing hard in envy. The desire for her to try something like this with Charlie was so strong yet she held herself back time and time again. It was only when the blonde teen ran his fingers into the dark haired boy’s locks that Penelope realized who one of those boys were. Absent-mindedly and bewildered, she whispered, “Aren’t you… Allison’s boyfriend?”

Alarms set off when she realized she was ruining their moment and if she spoke any louder, she would bring attention to them and herself. What would Allison feel if she saw this? She didn’t want to know, but for Poppy, the sight of such a love story taking a turn for the worse, abruptly crashing like a trainwreck, absolutely devastated her and any romantic notion she had left in her teen heart.

Her parents were far from perfect and honestly, at times, Poppy wondered if they still had love left in them for each other because they barely spent time with one another. This though? Was love even possible if the golden boy could cheat on the girl who had everything? What did this mean for her and Charlie? Swiftly, Poppy got up and ran into the crowd, hoping neither boy noticed her.

Hearing a girl's voice, Francis turned in a sharp spin to see a small thing in a red dress hurrying out of the room. A wash of panic began to run through his body, calmed by Russell’s hand on his, he looked to the other boy and sighed. He knew that the pretends had to be up soon and that he had to live his truth. For his sake, for Allison’s, for everyone.

“Relax, Fran. Pretty sure it was a Pinehurst kid. You’re fine. Now come here, I gave you one free pass and it expires at midnight.” As the two resumed kissing, the clicking shutter of a camera was drowned out by the pounding music of the party.

“Maxine, please. I want to go home. I can’t find Jade, can we please go home?” Penelope interrupted her older sister who was playing spin the bottle upstairs with faces she couldn’t make out. The only face she did recognize was Nolan.

Irritated, clearly with an objective in mind, the eldest James daughter glared at her sister, “I said no, Penelope. I’m having fun, just call mom or something.” Undoubtedly annoyed, Maxine’s eyes never left the bottle when Nolan reached for it, getting ready to spin it. Her tone opened the floor for unneeded discussion. The group of drunkards came in like a wrecking ball, ready to be rude.

“Yeah, stop being a baby.” A faceless boy insulted.

“The baby didn’t drink enough. Go cry to mommy!” A dimwitted girl teased.

“Max, that’s your sister? She’s fucking whack.” Another stranger complained.

Instead of defending her, like her sister usually did, Max matched her surroundings. After taking a sip of her beer, she laughed and sarcastically responded, “Come on guys, she is a child. I guess this party is for big kids only!” There was a moment Max and Nolan looked at each other, but not in a tender and loving way. Disappointment washed over his face, which only caused Max to look away and continue to joke with those who would forget her name tomorrow.

Nolan stopped himself from spinning the bottle. No longer interested in this game or party. Standing up, he shyly dismissed himself, “I’m out.” The group grumbled and bitched in displeasure as the empathetic boy took his leave without hesitation.

“Wait, Nol'!” After jumping up, Maxine took a moment to balance herself, inebriated. When she stood up tall and steady, she chased after her friend. Rushing past her little sister, Maxine dejectedly muttered, “Thanks a lot,” before leaving Penelope's sight.

She wasn’t going to cry. She wasn’t going to cry. She wasn’t going to cry.

Refusing to surrender to her emotional pain, Penelope walked down the stairs and defeatedly shuffled to the front door. When she reached for the door, she immediately pulled her hand back and jumped. Someone, a girl and an upperclassman, threw the door open with reckless abandon. With absolutely no fucks. And her expression was that of a mad woman. Penelope did note, however, that this stranger was hot.

“Where the fuck is he?” The blonde hissed under her breath. Unbeknownst to Penelope, she was staring at the furious and headstrong Vivia Belmonte. Danny and Natalia Belmonte’s older sister and Allison Davis’ best friend. In addition to all that, she was Reyrey’s “sex kitten” with tempting, sinful tinted eyes. That was kept a secret to everyone but Allison.

The two girls were an iconic duo and coexisted together, one as a preppy cheerleader and the other as an inspiring artist. Both were some of the hottest girls in their year and knew each other since diapers. Their friendship lasted through all the trials of adolescence and not even their separate passions could keep them apart. They trusted each other wholeheartedly and if Vivia had to choose between someone and Allison, she would always choose Allison. That was just the kind of friendship they had.

Stepping out of her way, Poppy watched the walking barbie saunter in and continue her pursuit of finding whoever 'he' was. Finally, the petite girl exited the building and walked down the sidewalk, aiming to get further and further away from the party. The park wasn’t too far from here. Thankful to the angry blonde for giving her a distraction from almost having a breakdown, Poppy picked up her phone and called her father a bit more composed than she had been before…

“Dad… can you pick me up?”

December 4, 2016, South Boston Juvenile Detention Facility
_____________________________________________________________________________

"This is bullshit," Decky grumbled into his folded arms, his upper body slumped onto the cafeteria table. His crew exchanged eye rolls around him, used to their boss and his pouting that he seemed to reserve for them. Decky and Sonny had been the youngest of the crew to get arrested that night almost a full year and a half ago, and most of the crew- while they still followed the two as Captain and Lieutenant- viewed the two as younger brothers, and dealt with their tantrums and such as only aggrieved older siblings could.

"C'mon Mob," Sonny put in from Decky's left once he was done shoveling the shit they pass for food around here down his throat. "You knew there was that stupid game tonight, and Decker's been runnin' 'round for you and ReyRey for a minute now-"

"So of course they couldn't make the drive out for visitation today." Prof cut in from Decky's right side, halting Sunshine before he could devolve into one of his well known rambles. Said rambler glared at his elder over the back of their Captain, sticking his tongue out at the young genius.

"Yeah, cheer up boss, ya got next week." Added Jonie from across the table, plate already cleared and pushed to the side. Next to him, Creed was holding back a smirk as he propped his cheek onto his hand.

"And the week after that…and that...and that-"

"This is why Jokes is my nickname," Jonie muttered before turning a grin back to an unresponsive Decky. "Point is, it's one day you didn't get to see them, how much could happen 'til next week?"

That got a response, though not the one the older boy had been expecting. Decky lifted his face from his arms to level an impressive glare at Jonie while the others grimaced and looked away, already aware of how that comment was gonna go down.

"Oh gee Jokes, I dunno," Decky started up with a sarcastic drawl. "S'not like we all got locked up in one night, or that it only takes one night for literally anything to fuckin' change. S'not like we all joined the Serpents in one night, or lost our fuckin' virginities in one day, or-"

"Okay Boss I got it!" Jokes protested quickly, hands up against his ears after the last example. "Fuckin' sorry, shit."

Seeing that Decky was taking a deep breath to keep going, Sunshine jumped in. "How bout you guys clear out, yeah? Mob's gotta finish his food and y'all gotta get ta the showers and clean 'em out." he pressed gently, tilting his head at Decky in warning.

"Yeah, I love how it ain't child labor if they lock us up first." Creed said as a parting shot, lightly shoving Jokes out of his seat and towards the showers, Ransom and Molotov trailing after silently. The other three that had been arrested that night- totalling ten of them all together- had come of age and been processed out to the Massachusetts Correctional Institution in Concord halfway through last year, leaving the Serpent crew on the inside a little lighter than most of them were comfortable with.

With all but Sunshine and Prof gone, Decky pushed at his slop a little bit with a sneer.

"Sure you'll even taste it with all that bitterness on your tongue?" Prof asked with an eyeroll. "You were a little harsh on Jokes, we've never exactly kept him around for his forethought."

"Shut up," the bitter boy responded before shoveling a spoonful into his mouth with a grimace. Instead of shutting up as ordered, Prof simply looked over to Sunshine and exchanged a look of exasperation.

"Nah, sorry bud, you ain't gettin' off that easy. This can't just be about Charlie and your girls outside the Serpents, they've missed visitation before." Another grumble met Prof's needling and he put a hand up to his ear. "Sorry, what was that? I don't speak mouth-full."

Decky glared again as he swallowed the food before responding. "Danny and Phil got sick with some bug, they couldn't come either," he admitted, going back to pushing his food around. "Phil called and the guards let me know when I got there, bastards were grinnin' like it was funny to make me walk there for nothin'," he lifted up his tray and swung his legs over the bench, standing up. "M'just pissed is all, why all on the same day?"

"Which explains the blow up at Jokes," Sunshine jumped in agreeingly, turning to Prof who rolled his eyes like he was getting paid to.

"Apologize later, you little asshole, I'm gonna go read." he berated, getting up himself and heading for the stairs on the other side of the cafeteria, none of the three Serpents noticing the eyes that counted them down as they left.

"Why does he always act like our father?" Sonny asked petulantly, getting a harsh scoff in return.

"Neither of our fathers act like that, Sunshine," he denied, heading to the trash as Sonny's annoyed protests bounced off his back.

Sonny going silent should have been his first clue.

No chatter from the guards should have been his second.

Unfortunately, he was too busy mentally bemoaning the loss of his time with those he called family, and he was unprepared when his arms were grabbed and twisted behind him by two pairs of hands. He began thrashing violently before his tray had even hit the floor, but the hands holding him in place were firm and large, definitely belonging to the older boys from another crew. They turned him around so he could see Sunshine being held down by another guy over at their table, a hand keeping his head to the table as the other one held his wrists behind his back.

The rest of the cafeteria had been cleared out, no other inmates or guards to witness what was happening. As he was taking in all the new information, someone stepped into his line of sight and landed a heavy right hook on his cheek. His head swung to the side before returning to its original position staring at the new person's chest. He raised his head to glare at the newcomer, only for a small blade to nestle itself under his now exposed jaw, making him freeze as Sunshine began to thrash against his own captor.

"Shift changes, y'know?" The one holding the shiv spoke up casually, his shrug pressing the blade more into the underside of his jaw. "It's amazin’ how easy it is to get the guards to fuck auff." Especially in this shithole. Now the guards on duty were in the breakroom having a circle jerk or something. Anything was better than watching these good for nothing kids.

Decky kept silent, unwilling to move the blade any closer than it already was. He knew this kid from his knowledge of the Fear Gorta well enough to know that you can't talk your way around crazy anyways. At least whatever the older boy does, it'll be over quick; this guy was known more for his play-with-your-food predator attitude than a villain-on-a-monologue one, so Decky was willing to just wait it out and hope the medical wing would at least keep him for a couple days.

"Yer ReyRey's lil' pet project, yeah?" He drew the knife out from under Decky's chin, his manic gaze tracing the red line it created. At the sight of his blood, Sunshine renewed his thrashing with vigor, and Decky took note that the asshole holding him down was actually struggling a bit now. Good. While not thrilled about being called either pet or project, let alone both, he took the shallow slice for the warning it was and left the question to remain rhetorical.

"Fuckin’ hell. Thought you'd be a bit more fun, but yer just a fuckin’ cunt.” Disappointment washed over the stranger’s face. He hated an anticlimactic meeting. Even with the increasing boredom, the mad man’s hungry eyes never faltered away from Decky’s. “This the same twat that beat the fuck auut auf Scissors his first day in?” That was rhetorical too. He knew who Mordecai was, he did his research, but man, meeting the kid in person was probably the biggest let down he’s ever experienced. “It was lookin' promisin'," his eyes seemed to lose all light as they stared into his captive's, and suddenly Decky realized that maybe the medical wing wasn't even going to be in his cards. "But looks don’t mean shit. Yer just a pup that likes tickling Reyrey’s balls for shits and giggles—"

Instinct took over at that point, and the punch to the face was about as expected as all the others he'd ever received in his life, so Decky let the momentum take his head and half his upper body to the side. "—Fuckin’ child’s play.” The guys holding him up slackened their grip enough for him to keep the momentum going and tear out of their grasp, backing up against one of the support pillars at the edge of the cafeteria area. His chest was heaving as he stared at the psycho and his goons closing back in on him, a line of sweat mixing with the blood at his throat and soaking his collar in the few precious seconds he had.

"Did you just corner yerself?" The older boy tsk'd with a miffed head shake, the edge of his blade glinting harshly as he toyed with it under the fluorescents. And yeah, it may have looked like that, but Decky already had a lifetime of experiences that told him the best thing when you have no one to watch your back is to face it to the wall. The pillar here would have to do for now though. Decky braced against it for a moment before coiling up and striking like the serpent he'd claimed for years, avoiding the leader with the knife and focusing on goons one and two instead. He used his size to his advantage and managed to take the smaller of the two to the floor and get in a few good punches before he was wrenched off of him by the other.

He was turned back towards the leader a second after he saw Sonny finally break out of his captors’ grip and immediately drag his tray off the table and swing it around into the final Fear Gorta's head, continuing even as he hit the ground. Alarms began blasting and Decky could have sighed in relief if he weren't still at the mercy of that blade. A disgusted look had crossed the leader's face as he watched Sunshine beat the daylights out of one of his goons with a lunch tray, and the alarms and lights twisted the look into something demonic before a grin took over like it had always been there.

"Looks like we outta time, babes," he spoke, just loud enough to be heard over the alarms and pounding boots of the guards down the hall. Between one flash of light and the next, the boy was in Decky's space and the blade was in his side. Cheek to cheek, his assailant whispered into his ear, "Tell ReyRey that Hatch sends his regards. Train the lil’ bitch bedda. If ya can’t..." He tore the blade out of him with a twist and chuckled, “...Oopsies. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronga. Ain’t that right, pups?” The one that had been holding him in place released his grip, and Decky's knees cracked against the floor as his hand flew to the wound. He glared one more time up into the older boy's eyes before a kick sent him careening to the side, a trail of blood smearing after him.

“...well fuck.” He finally coughed out.

"Mob!" Sonny screamed, vaulting over the table and running towards him with his tray still in his hand. He had almost made it when he was tackled to the side by the first guard on the scene. It was the last detail Decky remembered before things started to get fuzzy, the lights and alarms becoming bright blurs and ringing until everything faded to black.

Aaron was a very confused man right now. His entire evening had been turned upside down. He had travelled to the gym to try and relax and try to forget all of the emotions that had been reawoken inside his heart. In a small moment his entire peace had been shattered. Phantoms of the past had come rushing in. One by one, until a large group had formed. It didn't help that the first person he saw was Mei. Literally anyone but her. He hasn't kept up with the affairs of his peers after high school, so seeing them all again was something of a shock to the system.

For the most part he has no idea what they were upto. Or what they were doing for that matter. Sure he kept an eye on Jade from afar with social media when he could but that was mostly it. Everyone else in that room was a complete mystery. He was fairly sure that he could say the same about everyone towards him. There was no one in that group that would particularly care about Aaron and his actions, or see any need to keep up with the goings on in his life. Aaron just didn't fit in.

This was true before the fire too. Staring at his fellow former classmates. Aaron knew all too well that High School had not been kind to him. He had ended up staying outside of any social circles, but that was kind of his choice, as well as fate pushing him aside. The popular guy in middle school, wasn't always destined for greatness in High School it seemed. That was his junior year. Coming to the realisation that over the course of the summer vacation everyone around him had grown up. And he hadn't changed at all. Suddenly the guy who had been the centre of life at school, found himself an outcast.

It wasn't any of their faults though; the people standing Infront of Aaron. He wasn't even sure if it was entirely his fault. More a product of circumstance. That was why the tragic death of Alison didn't affect Aaron in the same way as others. He was on the outskirts of school life then, imposing a kind of self isolation on himself In order to protect himself. The presentation went on and Aaron didn't care much for it. If anything he was more annoyed that someone else had invaded his fortress of solitude as well. The group would eventually leave the gym, a slither at a time, until Aaron was once again left on his own. He would continue to sit there in the silence for a good twenty minutes before he began to feel the twinging of muscles in his lower back, which caused several groans of pain to escape his lips.

Reaching over to the bag he had bought with him, he pulled out his new box of tablets. Taking two out, he swallowed them dry with zero liquids. The whole event had forced him to miss his tablet taking time by thirty minutes, so now he was in pain and he had to go home. With several heavy grunts, and one failed attempt, Aaron found himself on his feet. He took his first few steps forward, the first five or so we're always the most awkward. His damaged leg always struggled to find its rhythm.when he started walking. It would eventually even up and Aaron was back to his normal shuffle. He has considered going to investigate the audio visual setup. Perhaps it would reveal who had been sneaking in to set all of this up. However that would mean staying here longer. Aaron wasn't sure he wanted that.

So instead, Aaron shuffled out the way he came and left out through the gym door to the outside world. He wasn't sure of the status of people who had decided to go investigate, unsure if they were even on the school grounds anymore. They could handle themselves however. Aaron wasn't worried. Darkness had started to take over the Edenridge sky and now Aaron needed to get home safely. He already has his route planned. He had come up with a route that used shortcuts, small gaps in trees and other assorted alleyways, to build up a rapid route from his house to the school and vice versa where he was as hidden as he could be. That way he could avoid the general public and avoid any gang members who could make his life a living hell.

Still he wasn't exactly the biggest fan of the dark. It was far easier to be ambushed. Not that it mattered though. Aaron wouldn't be able to properly defend himself even if they came upto him and declared their intentions in broad daylight. Thankfully the journey home was safe and quiet. Just painful. It took him a solid forty minutes to get home and by that time the darkness had truly settled in for the night. His mother would still be at the diner, not she back until about midnight when she was relieved by some out of town uni student who agreed to do graveyard shifts on low pay.

Aaron hobbled into his bedroom and laydown on the bed. He couldn't be bothered with taking his clothes off. That would cause way too much pain. So instead he just stared at the ceiling. Someone was going around and digging up the past of Edenridge. Was it just the Alison event they were going through? Or were they going to start digging up the past year by year? If that was the case…. A dry lump formed in the centre of his non-vocalising throat…. Don't think about it. Just forget about it. It will be fine. You will be fine.

A @metanoia & @Venus Collaboration
Featuring Mikhail Zima & Natalia Belmonte
Location: The Party | December 4th, 2016 | Edenridge, MA

For the past few months since he had come to live with his godfather, Mika had felt out of place for obvious reasons. The feeling of abandonment from his father was still fresh in his mind. Being sent off to live with a family that, while they weren't unfamiliar to him and he could say that he felt safe with them, they weren't his family - not really, anyway. The Gonzalez's were their own and as much as Mika had wanted to treat it as if he had lived with them his whole life, he didn't belong here.

He wanted to be back in New York living in the house he grew up in. He wanted to be back in New York hanging out with the friends he made. It didn't matter to him that they were children of mobsters. They were his семья - his family.

And maybe that's why he was fucking miserable at this party.

It had been nearly an hour and the most interaction that Mika had was forced conversation with some hyperactive idiots from Pinehurst who confused him for one of their friends. He was trying not to explode on people, but between their annoying excitement and his shorter-than-usual fuse, he felt like a bomb that could go off at any moment.

Mika was leaning against the wall, the hood part of his sweatshirt jacket over his head and he watched as the idiots from Pinehurst made fools of themselves with the fools from Edenridge. He watched almost every inch of the main party floor as a few games were starting. Between beer pong, a makeshift spin the bottle circle, and a few others, Mika rolled his eyes at all of them.

Nearby, there was another one of them trying to get started and he overheard someone mention Seven Minutes In Heaven. “Well that’s fucking stupid,” he commented. He thought he spoke quietly but he couldn’t help but notice the stare of a girl. She looked Italian or maybe she was Spanish? She was pretty hot, though.

For someone who wanted to attend the party of the semester so badly, Natalia Belmonte was having a good time. After her many failed attempts to convince her best friend Niles Sinclair to partake in this experience with her, Tal had opted for tagging along with the girls of the volleyball team. So far, she’d had a drink, chatted with her girlfriends and even danced along to a few songs. But a good time wasn’t the same as having an amazing, memorable night, which was what the Belmonte girl was looking for.

During one of her dancing breaks, the dark-haired girl noticed a boy standing against the wall, jacket hood up and the tell-tale expression of someone who didn’t really want to be there painted all over his handsome face. The displeased attitude he was giving off reminded Nat of Niles, and how he would be acting if he were here. She was internally debating on whether she should when the unknown boy turned to look at her. And as soon as they locked eyes for the first time, Nat knew that she’d found her partner in crime for the night.

Just then, the group of Edenridge students around them began to call out for anyone interested in playing Seven Minutes in Heaven: the perfect opportunity to make the first move in getting to know this moody guy. Without wasting any time after the announcement was made, the daring Belmonte girl stepped forward and raised her hand.

“We’ll go first!” Natalia confidently called out to the upperclassmen, grabbing the arm of the sullen young man next to her and pulling him towards her with surprising strength. Her declaration was met with wolf-whistling and jeers from the older kids, but the unfazed Talia simply shrugged her shoulders and continued to stand tall and confident, her pale, slender arm still paired with that of the nameless boy.

When his arm was tugged on, there was a moment before most of the force from this girl who had abnormal strength tried to pull him in a direction she wanted him to go that he looked at her. Up close he could tell that she wasn’t like most of these idiots, but he wasn’t budging. She might’ve been strong and if he were in any other mood that wasn’t fuckall, he might’ve even gone with her willingly, but the fact of the matter was that HB just didn’t feel like complying.

So, naturally, he asserted his own strength by forcing a stalemate between them. He shook off her hold of him and said, “Sorry, but I’ll pass. Whatever this is--” Mika gestured to the circlejerk of upperclassmen looking at them with partially-invested gazes, “--I’m not interested.”

Any regular girl would’ve been put off and even mortified by the way the nameless boy had shot them down in front of a small crowd of older (and probably more popular) kids of both Edenridge and Pinehurst students. Natalia, however, was not like most girls. She was strong, determined and fierce: and if she wanted something, she was getting that something.

So instead of waving the white flag of surrender, she smirked at the dark-haired teen and crossed her arms in front of her chest. “I don’t remember asking whether you were interested or not. I am telling you that we are taking the first turn of this game.”

Consider Mika unamused by this little show of dramatics.

Between the way she was unyielding in this...stubborn-like quality she seemed to possess and Mika’s impatience feeling like a pot of near-boiling water ready to burst, the desire for him to play a stupid game that he had virtually zero interest in playing was mindboggling to him. He didn’t even want to be here for reasons he knew she wouldn’t understand, let alone accept (he knew her type well), Mika knew he had to do something that’d send the message clear.

“And I’m telling--”

“Is it happening or what?” Connor, one of the upperclassmen asked, tapping his hands on a nearby table. There was an expression of impatience on his face, partly quelled by the glare Natalia shot his way.

And there were a few more people who chimed in, or at least Mika assumed because he blocked them out as he inhaled a few deep breaths. Anything outside his head became mostly muted. This feeling of frustration was familiar because his mother and sisters were the same way: strong-willed and stubborn as all hell.

And so was he to an extent.

And so was this bitch in front of him who refused to budge.

Chert voz'mi,” Mika cursed under a breath in his father’s tongue. He glared at the brunette and shrugged the smallest shrug he could. “Whatever, i’ll play your stupid game.”

The dark-haired girl's green eyes came alight, and her face broke in a triumphant grin. Of course she had gotten her way: she was a Belmonte, after all. Her daddy had taught her to never stop fighting for what she truly wanted in life, be it a small or big victory.

With that grin still in place, Natalia grabbed the boy's arm (albeit a lot less forceful this time) and dragged him to the rather large linen closet where the game was to take place, making sure to close and lock the door behind them. But once they were both face to face inside the closet, the Belmonte girl’s expression softened significantly.

“Are you okay?" the girl asked earnestly, her brows furrowing a little with concern. She knew she was probably prying too much considering the way this whole interaction had started, but how else was she supposed to know how to lighten up the boy’s mood? “I'm sorry if I was a bit much out there, but you looked like you weren't having too much fun, and I figured this could be a good way to start," she began, extending her hand out to him. “I'm Natalia Belmonte, king jock Danilo's prettier, smarter and older twin. What's your name?"

He contemplated smacking her hand away. With how Natalia acted towards him, if he was truly feeling like the asshole he was struggling to keep caged up, Mika would do exactly that and not calm down. But as his Godfather had tried to grill into his head in recent weeks, holding onto anger, when not rightly channeled, will swell up his cojones. And considering they were locked inside this closet for the next seven minutes, maybe he could entertain it.

This was what Mika has been wanting: a space to get the fuck away from the madness of the party.

With a smile, he shook her hand (albeit quickly). “Mika,” he said after a few moments of silence. Part of him wanted to not hide his name. Why hide that he was a Zima? But he just couldn’t. As proud as he was, Mika was still livid at his father for sending him away and he sure as hell wasn’t going to expose himself as an O’Hara yet. “My name’s Mika Gonzalez.” Saying it out loud to someone who wasn’t actually part of the Gonzalez family felt strange, yet a small smile curled itself on his face as if proud of the way it flowed off his tongue.

The mention of the famous (or infamous, depending who you asked) last name earned this Mika boy a questioning expression from Natalia. “Gonzalez as in related to Big Rey Gonzalez?” she asked him, curiosity getting the better of her. She was born and raised in Edenridge, and had not once heard about the existence of this Mika Gonzalez boy standing in front of her. “I didn’t know he had a white kid…” she absentmindedly muttered under her breath.

“I know, right?” Mika contained the urge to laugh as he leaned back against the wall behind him. “Here I was, living peacefully in Brooklyn and then suddenly I’m shipped off to live in this shithole with my Mexican papi--” He paused and laughed again when he realized he just insulted her hometown, “--No offense.”

Natalia pursed her lips together, biting back a laugh of her own when she heard Mika refer to the big bad Rey Gonzalez as his ‘Mexican papi’. For as long as she could remember, the name of the former Southside Serpents boss was one that incited fear and respect, and a trip to the ER or an early grave for those who mocked it. If this kid was willing to joke around with Big Rey’s name like this, then it meant that he truly was related to him somehow.

As for the dig at Edenridge, Nat only shrugged. “I mean, I’d be pretty pissed too if I was forced to leave somewhere as diverse as Brooklyn to move here,” she admitted with another small shrug. “Don’t get me wrong: I love my hometown to death. But we both know there’s a whole world of possibilities outside of this small town, and I plan to take advantage of them when I’m ready.”

“Not the reaction I was expecting,” Mika admitted with another laugh. But she was right, though. He was pissed that he couldn’t stay living in New York. Hell, he knew Katie and Stacy were probably just as peeved as he was, though maybe they couldn’t understand the gravity of the situation. Even Mika didn’t have all of the facts.

Mika shook his thoughts about that away and refocused on the here and now. “The worst part is this town doesn’t have much to offer, but I guess it’s cool to know my...father is some hot shot.” God, that felt weird saying. Even if he was embellishing the truth a bit, the fact was that Rey was the closest thing Mika had to a father since his real one wasn’t around. “And I guess the south side has a certain charm to it, too.” He wasn’t lying about that and the half-smirk on his face showed that.

The last two comments piqued Natalia’s interest, and gave her even more questions. She didn’t miss the way Mika hesitated when calling Big Rey his father, or how he smirked when saying that, of all places, the south side of town was ‘charming’. “The southside? Charming? Our southside? You’re definitely an outtatowner…” Talia commented. Even though she had never set foot anywhere beyond the train tracks that separated her beloved northside from the south, the stories had been enough to paint an unflattering and unappealing picture of the unexplored side of town.

“Wow, you’re really observant!” Mika’s reply came with a chuckle as he stepped away from the wall. “You should be a detective.” He let the comment sink in as looked at Natalia, who rolled her eyes at him. He did his best not to do a complete head to toe onceover of her, but he did let his eyes wander. “But yes, I’m from out of town. Only been here for four months. Maybe my experience with this town isn't what yours is, but it’s not bad. Or maybe it’s the fact I’m living with the boss that gives me a bit of an advantage.” Mika shrugged, not really caring what the reason was. “And what about you? From the way you talk about it and...carry yourself--” Unlike last time, Mika definitely did the full up and down of Nat, “--You’re obviously not from the Southside.”

Natalia grinned at Mika. “Look at you, making correct assumptions about me based on my looks! I guess that means you can be my detective partner now,” the girl joked with a sly smirk, followed by a cheeky laugh. “I’ve lived in the northside of town my whole life. My four older sisters moved here when they were kids, but Danny, Mira and I were born and raised here. My parents own the fancy Italian restaurant in town, Palermo, and my oldest sister owns The Godmother deli down in Main Street. Best sandwiches in town-- in a non-biased way.”

“Not biased, she says,” Mika laughed, cracking an amused smirk, which Natalia answered with a smile of her own. “Sure, I’ll just take your word for it. But that Godmother Deli?” Mika could only laugh at the name. “Yeah, I know it. Probably the only place I know that makes a classic reuben almost as good as my Mamushka used to.”

“I'll make sure to pass the compliments along to my sister. She's going to freak. She's a slut for compliments," Talia replied with a small laugh.

There were a few moments of silence before Mika pieced together something and he couldn’t resist from commenting on it. “Also I have to admit, I didn’t peg you for Italian when I first saw you.”

“Oh yeah? And what did you think I was?" she asked him with a raised eyebrow and a curious smile.

“Spanish,” Mika admitted without missing a beat.

Spanish?" Nat repeated in disbelief, searching Mika's eyes for any signs that he was pulling her chain and bursting out in a fit of laughter when she realized he wasn't. “Sweetheart, I'm out here looking like Snow White's prettier sister. I have a better chance of being Scottish or Irish than I do of being Spanish."

Mika laughed, stepping forward. He grabbed a nearby hanger and held it vertically, positioning it under his chin as if it was a microphone, and looked Natalia in the eyes as he said, “Ladies and gentleman of the closet, we present Detective Whitey, who is in fact not Spanish!” After he spoke, he imitated the cheering uproar one might hear from a stadium audience. He emphasized it by repeatedly raising his hands as he stepped a little closer to Natalia, lessening the gap between them.

After her new wave of laughter had passed, Natalia playfully grabbed the 'microphone' from Mika's hand and positioned it under her own chin, imitating her fellow closet-dweller in both stance and speech. “And with me we have fellow Detective Milky, who is the whitest fucking Mexican I have everrrrrrrr known!" she declared in between giggles, holding onto Mika's shoulders for support and unable to keep a straight face as she said her line.

The laughter from both was palpable but that wasn’t what seemed to catch Mika’s attention. It wasn’t even the fact she called him Milky, which that alone might’ve been something that would’ve most definitely made him die of laughter. No, it was the fact she was so close to him that he could smell something fruity or whatever that scent was; it was soothing, almost completely quelling any residual anger he was still latching onto from earlier. And it was also the fact she was close to him and her hands on his shoulder, this closeness allowed him to properly look into her eyes for the first time, those green eyes that even made someone like him start to feel things.

Goddamn it…

He took control of himself and slightly shook his head.

taptaptap

The knocks that came immediately snapped Mika out of whatever fucking daze he was locked in and his gaze darted quickly to the door. “The fuck?” He seemed to ask himself, though he looked to Natalia to see if she could shed some light. His experience with Seven Minutes in Heaven was practically nonexistent. Even as a concept, he didn’t know the ins and outs of it.

The knocks on the door helped Natalia's fit come to an end, albeit not fully. She was still somewhat laughing when she answered Mika's bewildered reaction. “Looks like our time is coming up," Nat announced, taking her hands away from Mika's shoulders and looking him straight in the eyes. “We've got a little over a minute left here, Chief. What's the plan?"

“You tell me,” Mika remarked, “you’re the one who started this.”

And it was true. Even though he wasn’t regretting it because, obviously, she was a lot cooler than he first gave her credit for, but Mika wasn’t exactly a seasoned veteren when it came to this or any party games. That just wasn’t his speed. Since Natalia was the one who dragged him into it. “From where I’m standing--” Mika emphasized by pointing to the ground like the smartass he was, “--since you started it, you should tell me the game plan. I mean, it’s only right, Snow White.” Though he absolutely wanted her to do that, he found himself taking her hand. Part of his mind knew what he wanted but the rest of him wasn’t sure if that was a two-way street.

Natalia wasn’t exactly well versed in the art of flirting, nor did she have the experience her older sisters or her brother had. But she wasn’t clueless enough not to realize that Mika was definitely flirting with her. Tal knew how to read people, and she could notice the signs that the dark-haired boy standing in front of her was interested in her.

And you know what? She was sorta, kinda interested in him too.

Smiling, Natalia took Mika’s other hand in hers, never once taking her eyes off him. “Would you be cool with hanging around the party with me for the rest of the night?” the girl asked him, her bold demeanor turning uncharacteristically shy as she realized how good the young man standing in front of her looked under the dim light coming from underneath the door illuminating his broad figure. “You said you were new here, so I want to make sure you have a good time-- even if you think Edenridge is a shithole,” she teased with a small laugh.

Mika laughed at her last comment. "Yeah and I doubt my opinion will change, but even shitholes have hidden gems."

Mika started to rub Natalia's hand, running his thumb along it in a slow motion. Even though time was limited in the closet, it seemed to slow down, or at least that's how it felt. He had no doubt that his earlier feeling of uncertainty about whether or not she might've felt the spark that he did no longer held a place between them. Mika also knew he wanted to see what she had to offer. He might be young -- hell, they both were -- but that didn't mean he didn't have some idea of what he wanted, even if it was the hormonal desires of a teenager.

"Sure, why not? If I'm gonna be forced to be at this party, might as well kick it with the only other cool bitch here."

“I guess we got ourselves a plan, then,” Natalia replied with a small smile, tearing her eyes away from Mika while being thankful he couldn’t see the way heat rose to her pink-tinted cheeks.

He didn’t say anything, not at first, anyway. He watched her for a few moments, seeing her look away for some reason and then he thought to himself wonder why she did that? And thinking about it, didn’t he do similar things just a minute ago? Yeah, he did and that was because he thought whatever fucking spark he felt wasn’t mutual. But she didn’t pull away when he made a gesture, so why the hell was Nat darting away from his direct gaze?

God, girls are confusing.

“So, uh--”

Before Mika could finish his thought, he was silenced by the door opening, which prompted both him and Natalia to turn and face the group of juniors and seniors looking at them. Some of them had half-smirks and others were chuckling to themselves. Mika felt like a deer in headlights when he saw one of the older girls whisper something to her girlfriend (at least that’s what Mika thought she was). He saw Connor, the senior from before who had spoken up look between him and Natalia. Mika was partially blushing being in the spotlight.

And that’s when Connor’s grin fell into something that resembled disappointment.

“For shame, my man! For shame!” Connor dipped his head and shoulders down in a dramatic fashion, turning around. “They didn’t do anything!” He exclaimed, which judging from the way he spoke to the rest of them, they believed him.

Great.

Whether it was the pressure of having all eyes on him or just to get this asswipe to shut the fuck up, Mika quickly turned to Natalia and kissed her. And the act alone stopped the collective disappointing moans from the older kids, but it was how Mika kissed her that seemed to draw some attention. He pushed her back into the wall and for a few long moments, there was nothing but the kiss.

And after Mika realized how long it was, he pulled away, feeling his heart tha-thump tha-thump so hard that he had to breathe in and out deeply to relax it. “I-” He looked at Nat, not sure what to say, and then glared at Connor. “Happy?”

He didn’t say anything and Mika’s gaze returned to Natalia, unsure what he could really say. This wasn’t his first kiss, but it certainly felt like it was the first one he had some control over, which he found funny since it came as a response of having control taken away from him.

Meanwhile, Natalia was awestruck and on cloud nine: it showed all over her wide eyes and half-open lips. Before today, she had only ever kissed one boy in her life, and the kisses they’d exchanged had a hesitant, explorative, gentle nature to them. But Mika’s kiss, however, was worlds different from the others she’d had. It was heated, passionate and with an intensity she hadn’t experienced before. There was no denying there was a spark between them, but there was also no dismissing the pang of guilt on Tal’s stomach when she thought of Niles.

Before she could go down that rabbit hole, Natalia brought herself back to reality. Without allowing a chance for stupid Connor to respond, the dark-haired girl grabbed Mika’s hand and gently tugged on his shoulder, jerking her head in the direction of the rest of the party.

“Come on, detective. Let’s go have some fun at this shithole that’s your new home now.”

Trigger Warning: Suicide Attempt

December 4, 2016, Edenridge High at Night
________________________________________________________________________________

The night was a special kind of darkness. Some people found comfort wrapped in the pure black blanket, some got lost in their fears, insecurities, and nightmares, and others came to life. There was something about the spirit of Edenridge High, stoic and sober, aware of itself, of the history that echoed within these halls, that drew Niles Sinclair in.

At night, the school chose solitude, like an almost abandoned house, in a surreal, timeless state. As weird as it may seem, this was Niles’ cherished place where everything he suppresses throughout the day comes out, unrestrained and unfiltered. This was the only time he truly felt free and himself. Not even in front of his closest loved ones did he feel like he could say everything he needed to say and not feel like a burden.

His father wouldn’t be home, working unpredictable hours at the hospital, and his sisters, they had Cat or Nina Belmonte’s places to stay at, if they absolutely needed a babysitter. Thankfully, neither Autumn or Carrie wanted him home so they never tattled about his night endeavors.

Once in a blue moon, he could have the school all to himself. No false pretense. No popularity contests. No drama. Just him, the school, and, well, Frank, but Frank sucked at his job.

Niles liked the quiet and he liked that he knew where every camera was and the exact times the overnight security guard, Mr. Frank Turner, would take a nap, watch porn, or leave the building, propping the front door open, for one of many smoke breaks. He also liked how easy it was to pickpocket the dude and make a copy of the master key to every room in this godforsaken place. He liked how easy it was to get in and do what he wanted. He liked… having the school to himself.

Rolling the master key in his knuckles, casually walking down the hallway in a black hoodie and skinny jeans to match, as he had done many times before, Niles lurked through the halls of his school, seeking his destination like a creature of the night.

Tonight he was especially annoyed because he knew a certain someone was having the time of her life at a party that he refused to go to. Whether he was annoyed at himself or knowing well enough what she’d be doing at this party was yet to be determined.

As he silently roamed, his faded eyes rarely blinked and his expression looked effortlessly dead. Lost in the in the inbetween, his reality and the reality around him, Niles found himself struggling with his raging demons and PTSD.

What triggered him today?

Was it the fact that Autumn found out their father was sleeping with a woman that wasn’t their mother? Or the fact that Carrie cried in Niles’ arms a few hours ago seeking advice only a mother could give? Or was it that he could feel himself forgetting his mother’s smile as he replaced it with someone else’s?

Regardless of what it was, he felt guilty, unworthy, and incredibly sad. He would never admit it though. Being honest outloud wasn’t his forte. Instead, he locked it deep inside his heart, refusing to give anyone the combination.

If people asked him about the year his mother died, he wouldn’t be able to answer it. Niles had no recollection of that year at all. The thing about grief was, it felt easier to turn away from it and not take power over the painful memories. Easier, but not healthier. Even if he wanted to, he knew he could never truly move on from his past. From her. How could he when she was everything and more? She was his mother.

People didn’t understand. They wouldn’t. The hurt would never stop. Not now, not later, not ever. There was this constant piercing pain he felt. It may have been a couple years since her passing, but it still hurt like a bitch. His heart couldn’t suddenly mend because someone believed he and his family had grieved long enough. He would never stop loving his mother and he knew until the day he died, he would think of her and hurt like hell.

Fuck, it hurt like hell.

When he registered where he was, Niles looked at his hand. It was now holding a can of bloody red spray paint. When did he take that out of his backpack? His green gaze went from the can to the white wall in front of him.

In big letters it read:

Out of shock, he dropped the can and stepped back, eyes widened and watering. That wasn’t what he wanted to write. He… he couldn’t stop thinking about the drifting image of the woman he loved. The most important person to him. If there was some kind of God out there, that man was an asshole, who ripped a compassionate and driven mother away from three children and a doting, hard-working husband.

And after?

This town, this fucking cursed town, only spat on her memory. She wasn’t born and raised in Edenridge. She was always seen as an outsider. Yet she did more for this fucking place than anyone else did. All she wanted was a place to call home and a family, but this town… this fucking town…

“Who’s there?!”

“Shit.” Seeing the flashlight turn the corner, down the hall, Niles swiftly picked up the can and darted in the opposite direction, making a harsh turn.

“Hey get back here, you little shit!”

Switching his survival instincts on, the scrawny boy ran every which way, opening a classroom door to misdirect the security guard.

“Fuckin’ snake, come out. This ain’t a playground!”

Turning his head, Niles didn’t see Frank, but knew he was coming close, so he had to be fast. For a fat guy, Frank could run, but not fast enough for the boy that ran around town a lot, constantly getting away from sticky situations.

Steady and fast, Niles unlocked a door and closed it quietly behind him. Peering in the peep window, Niles saw the flashlight and instinctively ducked down. After waiting a few minutes, inhaling and exhaling, Niles went from a crouch to a standing position, peeking out once more. He could see Frank in the other room, scanning the surrounding area with his flashlight.

Sighing in relief, the lost boy knew he was in the clear and that Frank probably didn’t think whoever he was dealing with had a master key. Turning to see what was in front of him, Niles immediately knew where he was and shuffled his way up the stairs that led to the main building’s roof.

When he reached outside, Niles pocketed the key, placed the can back in the bag, dropped his bag on the ground, and made his way to the ledge. Weird how natural it was for him to come here, out of all places. Absent-mindedly, he wandered to the brick half wall at the edge of the roof.

Latching onto it, Niles pulled himself up until he was standing on top of it, staring at the gym, the football field, and beyond. Past that was the little town of Edenridge. The place that was his so-called home.

His eyes went from the stars to the blacktop streets. Something this beautiful, you’d think it would be enough to calm his soul. Something this beautiful, you’d think it would force him to reflect. Something this beautiful, you’d think it would help make it all stop.

Make it stop.

Finally, his empty gaze went to the cement floor below him, which was a distance away in height.

Just do it. Jump. Stop pretending. No one likes you. Jump. No one’s going to miss you. Just fucking do it. Jump. Coward. Pussy. Bitch boy. Jump. Just fucking die already. JUMP!

He could feel himself lifting his foot and moving forward, a sweet surrender to be free and see his mother again. He could feel relief at the idea of ending it all. He could feel… “You’re my best friend in the whole wide world,” he lethargically turned, looking over his shoulder, to see an image of Natalia Belmonte. She walked to the wall and offered her hand, “I don’t know what I would do without you.”

When he reached for it, she disappeared.

“Heh.”

Of course she’d appear when he needed her the most.

Dropping back down on the rooftop, he pulled out his phone and called the person that just saved his life. When she didn’t answer, he left her a message, “Hey. Can you… when you’re done… come see me? I, uh… just come by.” *Click.*

Fuck. Was he going to say he missed her? Yeah, right. That would be so not him… and pathetic… and mushy… and shit.

Nervously, he went and sent a text immediately after: I got cookies.

Shoving his phone back in his pocket, the lost boy slapped his forehead in embarrassment, “Cookies? Seriously?”

____________________________________________________________________________________________

____________________________________________________________________________________________

This was not how ReyRey had intended to spend his evening; explaining to a bunch of wannabe detectives a sordid night in his past but that’s how it was supposed to be. He led the group that had assembled on the front lawn of his party house and brought them into the garden where there were a few derelict looking picnic benches. At the rear of it all was a shed that had been burned out; no doubt to cover tracks. That was, for all intents and purposes the scene of a crime. “Take a seat, young’uns. It’s story time.”

As the amassed group begrudgingly complied, the tension in the air was real. ReyRey was no joke. He was someone to be feared and irregardless of the bravado shown by some of the gang, there was no denying the twin feelings of anxiety and uncertainty that their current situation had birthed. Rey could just as easily have his minions like Prof and Sonny emerge from the shadows, gun them all down and bury them in the very garden they now sat in. Who would know? Who could stop it? There was more to this story, more twists, more turns, more hard truths no doubt. Where would it all end?

“First off, I’m not the guy behind the letters. I’ve been getting them, same as you and then some” R2 pulled one of those damn Polaroids from the back pocket of his jeans and threw it onto one of the tables. This image was far clearer than the one found in Francis Callahan’s locker. It was still the party but the lights had been turned on and in the centre of it all was Allison, lying on her back in the bathroom, her green and white skirt had fallen up her leg to expose her bloomers. Thick white foam was billowing from her mouth and blood pouring from her nose.

This was it. This was the moment that innocence died. And there besides her was ReyRey Gonzalez. On his knees, crying.

“None of you were supposed to be there that night. There wasn’t even supposed to be a party…”

Afternoon - Edenridge, MA. December 4th 2016

It was a great day for business.

Whenever there was any kind of athletic event in Eden, the town was always a buzz. It was something that everyone looked forward to and it just changed the atmosphere to something of positivity, even in Southie. It took Rey back to his own school days which weren’t really that long ago. He remembered game days vividly, as a former standout on the wrestling team he was always one to receive the adulation of the masses and it felt so, damn, good. It was through that avenue that he met a certain person, one who evokes a certain feeling when thought about.

With everyone in a good mood and looking to celebrate a sure fire victory against the Pinehurst Pinheads, El Hijo del Rey knew that people would be looking to score and he was the man that had everything that they could ever want. No matter the score tonight, people would migrate back to Eden and probably to Southie since that’s where all the good parties were and he would be waiting; a serpent on every corner ready to strike and make some cold hard cash.

Sitting on his burner phone, ReyRey began to arrange everything. Moving the pieces of the board like a chess master, he began placing dealers at the hotspots, he was making sure every base was covered. School had let out, so there was no doubt that the town was getting ready to make the short drive to Pinehurst. Most shops and businesses would be empty, meaning the inmates would truly control the asylum tonight. Alerted by the opening of a door, R2 reached down to his side. A gun was never far away; in his line of work he had to be prepared to take someone out at the drop of a dime. This was especially true in recent times as the Fear Gorta seemed to get braver and more bold with every passing day.

“Who’s there?”

Rolling her eyes, Vivia closed the door behind her and sarcastically mocked, “You’d think by now you would know your girlfriend’s voice.” By the way the middle Belmonte child held herself, she was not here for a good fuck. She was one of the few people that tested her boundaries with the serpent king. Whether it was the mafia blood coursing through her veins or her addiction to nothing he sold but everything he was, Vivia had a problem and she was glaring at it.

As her gray purse dangled at her side, she wore a dainty white dress under her light pink hooded overcoat. Her lips were red, just like her best friend’s always were. The expression written on her face showed a hint of anger, but also that she was up to something, which would undoubtedly lead to an argument. For once, she was holding her tongue, which isn’t something a Belmonte woman does often.

Without asking for an invite, she took off her coat and placed it on the rack, all the while keeping her purse nice and close to her. “I’m allowed to check on you, so here I am. Checking on you. How’s my man?” Turning on her heel to face him, she beamed at R2, continuing to drag out the purpose of her visit, intentionally.

He knew this smile well, it was flirtatious yet vindictive. It was far from genuine, yet still appealing to the eye. If it wasn’t for his hold on her, who knows what trouble Vivia would get herself into. She was a she-devil disguised as an angel and became unhinged when she was attached to something. In this case scenario, she was completely devoted to the most dangerous man in town. For better or for worse, Reyrey was her addiction.

ReyRey had played this game too many times to count. In a lot of ways he regretted ever dipping his toe in the infinity pool that was Vivia Belmonte’s; why? Because there were bloodthirsty sharks hidden in the water. She had caused him so many problems that it had started giving him migraines but he just couldn’t quit her. As much of a walking daddy issue as the girl was, she always came back and she saw the man behind the persona, as much of it as he was willing to share at least.

He couldn’t really remember how they had even started. Normally he wouldn’t go for high school girls but Vivia in that little uniform was dynamite and so were all her friends. He wished the cheerleaders in his school days looked that damn good. Taking his hand off of his gun, he returned his attention to his phone and began texting once again.

“So what’s up that tight little ass today, mi amore?” R2 didn’t even look at her.

Typical. Dodging her question with a question. On top of that, he knew how to press the right buttons to get her riled up. She hated being treated like second rate and there he was glued to his phone choosing work over her. “I don’t know. You tell me.” Breaking the distance between them, deeply gazing at him with her hazel eyes, perturbed at how easy he can brush her aside, Viv probed, “Hiding something from me?”

“Of course I am!” He shook his head as if his answer should surprise her. “I run the biggest drug op this side of Boston. I know people and I know things. Why would I not hide shit from you? I love you babe but you’ve got a mouth like a leaky fucking sink.” He finished sending a text before putting his phone down and leaning back against the sofa, hand over his chocolate eyes. This was exhausting. Viv was like a dog with a bone and he knew it. Whatever was stuck in her craw, they were going to talk about it at that moment. She wouldn’t just sit on it or let it lie. She just had to talk, talk, talk.

“So, I’ll ask again. What’s up babe?”

“Oh-my-fucking-god. You know damn right I wasn’t talking about your business.” As much as Viv wanted to continue this dance, she knew he wasn’t going to budge until she spoke her peace, so instead of saying anything immediately she went into her purse and pulled out a ziplock bag with a small black lace thong and tossed it on his lap. “Explain that, mi corazón, or should I even call you that anymore?” At this point, Viv threw her purse across the room and growled, “Who’s the bitch, asswipe?!”

“Allison.” He said bluntly.

It was not a one time thing and it certainly wasn’t a new thing. Allison had been coming to ReyRey for around a year. It all started after one of he and Viv’s tremendous rows. He went to drown his sorrows at the Sin and who should turn up but the Queen of Edenridge High looking to score some coke. Apparently her boyfriend was hooking up with another guy, her brother had been shipped off to camp and her mom was being a super bitch or whatever. Plus by some amazement Viv had also pissed her off. Needless to say, one thing led to another multiple times and has done ever since. Allison always regretted it. Rey really didn’t give a fuck.

“She likes to come over for coke and cunnilingus when her boyfriend is busy blowing the varsity squad.”

“Shut up, Reyrey.” Viv glowered in disdain. No matter how truthful he was being, the barbie doll refused to believe any of it. This was her best friend he was talking about and while she knew about Allison’s need for a good fix, she would not tolerate him spewing lies that he slept with her. If that was true, then he was telling her right now to her face that Allison was better than her. She already dealt with that at school, she didn’t need that added grief from the guy that said he loved her. “Well if this is the game you want to play.”

Viv walked around the couch to get her purse and pulled out her phone, “I have plenty of guys waiting on call to fuck me. You’re lucky I even saved myself for you!” Appalled at his audacity, she scrolled through her contacts and found one of her classmates, Luke Barlowe. “Since you’re going to do what you want, I’m going to do the same. Have fun with your new side piece because we’re done.” At this point, Viv was already making her way to the door, retrieving her things and writing a text to this varsity jock that had been waiting on her with bated breath. She was pretty sure he was madly in love with her since grade school.

“I’ll see you tonight, Mi corazón.”

He called out to her before grabbing his phone again. Fuck it. He thought to himself. He didn’t need this shit today. It was one of the busiest days of the year and Vivi was on one of her shit on the world days. He texted Allison telling her to bring the party to 13 Carlisle after the game. Vivia wanted to play games. Nobody was better than ReyRey.

Nobody.

The Party - Edenridge, MA. December 4th 2016

ReyRey, hearing a ruckus downstairs (or at least a more obvious one) he pulled on his jeans and vest before hurrying out of the bedroom.

Allison too redressed herself before eyeing up the bag on the bedside table. Her head was already fuzzy and the sweats were starting to set in. She reached for a glass of water but was overcome by a feeling of dread. The image of Francis & Russ. Her mother, Vinny. Vivia. It was all too much. Charlie’s words echoed in her mind like a call in a theatre “I don’t think it’s safe” Her hand moved to the left and she grabbed the bag, storming off to the bathroom.

She noted an off color to the powder but she really didn’t care. She lined up the drugs and rolled up a dollar bill. Her eyes were puffy and red and all she could think about was just how much her life seemed to have just stopped. In the annals of Americana it was true what they always said: the popular girl does peak in high school. With every line that she began to snort, Ally could hear the whispers in the halls of how she would never make it out of high school alive. What talent did she have? She wasn’t bright. Her boyfriend had been living a lie and she had perpetuated it across the community. Her brother was a waste of space who wouldn’t amount to anything just like her, how could he? Allison was not a good template to model oneself after. She had betrayed her best friend and then there was her mother, in the pocket of the Angels, the Serpents and who knows who else?

As the final line entered her system; Allison began to feel her throat burn and her chest tighten. She glanced at her face in the bathroom mirror and was appalled at the sight. Everyone always told her how beautiful she was; ”look at you now” she thought to herself. The urge to vomit was overwhelming but the sunflower held it in. She gripped the bathroom counter tightly as the room began to spin like the Merry go round at the park. All of a sudden something akin to a bolt of lightning struck Allison’s heart and she dropped to her knees, hitting her forehead on the rim of the toilet. Unable to control herself, she began to vomit but as she opened her eyes, she began to panic. Ally was not throwing up sick, it was foam and blood. Her head began to throb even more as she pulled herself to her feet and dragged herself out of the bathroom.

“Rey?!” She called out between spurts of bloody coughs. “REY?! ANYONE?!” There was no response; her screams drowned out by the pounding music that filled the rooms of the derelict house. Allison looked once more at her reflection, hanging in the air around her was a black cloud, a shroud with hands ready to drag her to hell. She stumbled forward towards the dresser but her feet gave way and she fell backwards into the bathroom. Her eyes had welled up with more tears, she could feel the blood pooling beneath her skull and as she stared up at the light, her vision began to darken. Allison reached up towards it but her strength had left her.

”I don’t want to die...”

Charlie looked at Jade with a look of fear in his face. ”Jade, what the fuck do I do?!” The tall boy put his hands behind his head and kicked a large chunk of dirt across the garden and into a canoodling couple on the corner. ”I’m pretty sure all those drugs are fucked and I just gave some to the queen of the goddamn town! Oh fuck!”

“First thing you’re going to do is calm down, okay?” That wasn’t a question that left Jade’s heavy red lipstick-covered lips, but a highly-encouraged suggestion that was followed by Jade’s usual stern glare from her raccoon eyes. She understood that the situation was fucked. Jade knew that the queen herself getting drugs in general was bad. And she knew if anyone found out what happened, they were both screwed.

Jade refocused her attention from the gravity of the situation to back on Charlie. “Does anyone else know?” Jade found herself asking Charlie point-blank, a sense of partial dread in her voice. She looked at Charlie’s absent gaze and snapped in front of his face. Charlie! Does anyone know about the drugs?” Jade had an idea, as vague as it was, if anyone else found out. So she had to make sure the only ones who knew were the two of them.

Charlie tried to run through the day's events in his head, piling his thoughts together and trying to work out who knew what. “Everyone. Jade I’ve sold so much shit today. There isn’t a kid in this town that doesn’t know I was dealing today.” The boy placed his hands upon his head and exhaled deeply, as if blowing fire from his lungs. “Somebody messed with that shit, JT. I went to take a piss, came back and everything was mixed and messed up. I sell another ounce and bodies will be hitting the floor.”

As she tried to understand the extent of what Charlie was saying, the only thing that Jade could think about was making sure that Charlie was going to be okay. Everyone else who might’ve taken the drugs, if they were smart, wouldn’t snort it all in one go. Jade didn’t pretend to know everything about it, but she had some faith that they were semi-responsible partygoers.

Inside the house, Vivia Belmonte was on a rampage and she honestly didn’t care if any of her siblings saw her and told their father she was starting shit. In this moment of time, she didn’t even care if her family knew she was fucking ReyRey Gonzales. Lucky for her, Natalia was nowhere to be found and neither was Danny. When she saw her boyfriend coming down the stairs, noting how his pants were unbuttoned and how generally sloppy he looked, Viv gritted her teeth, “The bitch is upstairs, isn’t she?”

Some random stranger placed their hand on her arm to calm her down, baffled at the way she was talking to R2. Slapping his nasty hand off of her, the she-devil hissed, “Touch me again and I’ll slit your throat.” There was an accumulation of frustration that led to this point. With R2 not picking up her calls or answering her texts and her making an empty threat that she would sleep with someone that wasn’t him, Viv was angry. Angry at him. Angry at the world. But most of all, angry at herself. For being caught up with a good for nothing piece of shit like the man standing in front of her.

“I’m really not in the mood for your shit, mami.” ReyRey blocked the stairs with his large frame and eyed the stranger that had tried to touch Vivi. As innocent as it may have been, she was still his property; no one was to lay a finger on her except for him. “Which bitch might you be referring to, Vivi? Huh? Only bitch upstairs is the one in the photo on my dresser…oh wait that’s you right?” He really didn’t want to air out his stuff in public but he was high on his own supply and the Belmonte girl had pissed him off something fierce. ”You wanna go upstairs Vivi? Go right ahead. You’ll find people fighting and fucking in every room, pretty sure your girl Allison is up there too and not with Francis.” His words were poisoned with venom and malice as he stepped aside and offered her the staircase. As he did so, a large thud came from one of the rooms; his room.

With the sound of a large thud, Vivi’s eyes widened, still in complete denial that Reyrey was sleeping with Allison. Instead, her mind thought of other possibilities and women he could have in his room. He was offering her passage which meant he didn’t care enough to hide his dirty little secret. Still, her heart sunk at the reality of the possible truth. Not breaking face, refusing to show any sign of insecurity, she rolled her eyes at her boyfriend but indeed shut her trap. No matter how much fire Vivi had in her, R2 was always able to simmer her down by a simple look on his face. His words were cold and heartless, which reminded her that as much as she loved him, there were limits to his love for her.

Sauntering upstairs, feeling the eyes of the party on her and R2, Vivi found herself facing his bedroom door. If she hesitated now, he would know she was coming to terms with how insignificant and weak she was to him. There was no way in hell she’d show that. She was a Belmonte at the end of the day and she could handle whatever bullshit life threw at her with iron and steel.

Casually opening the door, she peered in, her eyes scanning the room for any sign of undergarments and women. When her eyes went to the floor, her heart dropped and everything she was thinking about before about R2 and his cheating went right out the window. “B-baby.” Vivi breathlessly muttered before running to the convulsing body of her best friend, “Baby!” Allison was gasping, losing air, her fingertips were blue, her lips were blue, her skin… clammy.

Oh god no.

Rey followed Viv into the room, fully expecting a war to erupt between the two friends; instead he found a sight that even struck him to silence. Allison was on the floor, blood pooled around her and her beautiful face smudged and tainted with all manner of unspeakables. His hand came up to cover his mouth as he took in the scene. She has said that something was off with the drugs, he didn’t believe her considering he cut them himself before they were sent out for sale. Hearing Vivia’s cry and the look on her face, it was enough to thaw ReyRey’s icy cold heart.

He took a step forward and knelt down next to Vi and Ally: his eyes awash with growing tears. The clicking of a camera snapped him from his trance as he snapped his head towards the door and saw the photographer. Jumping back to his feet, R2 charged towards the child like a behemoth and pushed him hard against the hallway wall. “Burn those photos or so help me God I will murder you and your entire family. Get the fuck outta here.” He tossed the kid down the stairs like it was nothing and went back into the bedroom, closing the door behind him.

This wasn’t the time or place for Vivi to break down. Allison needed her. Reyrey needed her. All those that loved Allison needed her. Swallowing her tears, stomaching the grotesque visual that was the Queen bee, Vivi took off her pink jacket and laid it on the pool of blood, while whispering, “Baby, it’s going to be okay. Can you still hear me?” Viv wasn’t one to dabble in hard drugs herself, but the moment she started dating R2 she wanted to be ready for anything since this was his kingdom.

No one is ever ready for something like this, but she had to be.

Quickly, she pulled out her phone and dialed 911, putting it on speaker. Putting her phone to the side, she first tried to wake up her friend, but she knew at this point they were too late. Allison Davis had lost all consciousness. Soon after, she grabbed Allison’s wrist to check for a pulse. She was no doctor but she could feel the life leaving her friend’s body, quickly.

How long had she been like that? Panicking internally, Vivi didn’t know if she should turn her friend’s body over from choking first or perform chest compressions… still, she wanted to be safe and so she started with chest compressions, in hopes that she could get Allison’s heart pumping once more. As she did so a dispatcher answered.

Her voice was shaky but she did her best to say the needed information: “Please come to 13 Carlisle Ave. My best friend… I think she stopped breathing. She’s no longer conscious. There’s blood and vomit everywhere.” She knew the mention of overdose or drugs would summon the police, along with EMS. She also knew that the police were barely a threat to the serpents since they had snakes working on the inside. Reformed or not, once a serpent always a serpent.

With a calming yet serious voice, the dispatcher directed Vivi while asking standard questions. Shaking her head, as she gently turned her friend’s body to the side, laying her on her pink jacket, now stained in blood, Viv cried, “Please, we don’t have much time. Baby, wake up. I love you. I’ll always love you.”

ReyRey had remained silent as Vivia dealt with the chaos around him. He did not have the words at that moment for anything that was happening. Not only was there a dead girl in the bedroom of one of his properties, it was Allison Davies. Vivia’s best friend, Edenridge’s golden girl and his DNA was literally everywhere. At best he would have to get his father to call in some favours and get this covered up as your run of the mill overdose. Yet something was niggling at him, something that had been said earlier, something about the drugs being tainted. It was then, a moment of clarity occurred.

“Decker.”

ReyRey damn near pulled the door off of its hinges as he called for everyone to get out of the house. He yelled absurdities and off color remarks, anything to force the partygoers to get out of there fast. Decky had sworn by Charlie. He had vouched for him. He can handle it. Hard Times is a good guy. A good guy? then why on Earth was he mixing coke and heroine into fucking speedballs and giving them to high schoolers?! Entranced in a rage beyond all comparison R2 stormed down the stairs, through the living room and towards the back door. Charlie was going to answer for this crime.

Jade took his hands, forcing him to not only squeeze them but to look at her. “Eyes on me, okay?” Jade bit her lip, feeling her heart beating from the tension of what Charlie said. “This isn’t your fault. In whatever worse case happens, that isn’t your fault. It’s..” She felt herself hesitate for a moment and shook her head, her hands squeezing Charlie’s as if to validate her resolve. “The person who mixed this shit — they’re the ones to blame.” She understood what she was saying. If people died from this, Jade would keep it a secret. And maybe that was bad, but for better or worse, Jade Taylor was there for her friends. “This is staying between us, alright? Tell me you understand!”

He was doing his best to remain calm but the fear in Charlie was starting to build. Jade’s hands on his were a calming presence but they weren’t doing enough. His mind drifted to his happy place, anywhere where Poppy James was. Tonight was supposed to be their night. He was going to tell her that she was his heart and the only thing keeping him from losing his mind in this cursed town they called home was her. He needed her. His Mom was getting worse which just so happened to coincide with Decky getting pinched by the police and his spit opening up on the corner; a void which an inexperienced Charlie offered to fill purely for the money. He regretted that decision wholeheartedly.

“Tha…”

Before the boy could continue, the back door of the house swung open, violently hitting the back wall of the house as a bleary eyed ReyRey emerged from the kitchen. The King Snake pushed past multiple partygoers knocking them to the floor as he marched towards Charlie and Jade. The look in his eye was not a pleasant one, it was something that Charlie couldn’t even begin to describe. For someone so adept at wordplay, he was speechless.

ReyRey completely ignored Jade before grabbing Charlie by the throat and ramming him against the door of the shed. “What the fuck did you do? THE FUCK DID YOU DO TO HER?!!” His hiss was followed by a bark so loud that time itself stopped. He glared at Jade, as if daring her to even try something.

“Her?”

She didn’t know if it was the thunderous boom that carried from Rey-Rey’s person, targeted at Charlie that paralyzed her or if it was that venomous glare that he shot at her. Jade had come to know him as a somewhat ill-mannered guy, who had a mouth but never made Jade feel...frightened. He was somebody that everyone in the Southside knew and especially someone her uncle often said was a guy that you could depend on. But maybe for the first time, Jade felt an actual terror crawl up her skin and spine, chills of the worst kind freezing her.

“Don’t..please..” She heard herself say, though it was lacking so much volume that it might as well be barely a whisper.

Yanking open the shed, R2 threw Charlie inside and then climbed in himself before slamming the door shut.

“Please, Rey what…”

A loud grunt followed by a thud.

“…i didn’t know….”

More grunts and more smacking sounds followed by tears, palpable and real. The tears of a child…

A @metanoia & @LovelyComplex Collaboration || Featuring Marco Brady, Kylee Grimm, Danny Belmonte & special appearance by Rhett Cleary

____________________________________________________________________________________________

For the longest time, Marco -- and the rest of his family on both sides -- have always been avid fans of sports of all kinds. It didn’t matter if it was baseball, American football, real football, cricket, gymnastic, professional wrestling, if it could be perceived as a sport and it brought out that competitive nature in both player and fan, the odds of the Castillo and Brady clans gathering around the flat screen to cheer and boo and yell and groan were high.

And even though he was the only Castillo-Brady at the Pinehurst-Edenridge game, this couldn’t be any truer than the sounds of Marco standing up, cheering for the Celtics after they took an incredible lead of sixty points. Francis Callahan was amazing and an amazing shot, but he wouldn’t be the one MArco kept his eyes on.

For nearly the entirety of the game (at least when he wasn’t entertaining some people near him who wanted to chat during breaks), Marco found himself feeling the team spirit - or as Robin from Young justice would say, feeling the aster.

(Feeling the aster is good.)

And feel it he did. That euphoric feeling Marco felt crawl up his spine and the blood rushing to his head when he stood up as his arms went up high every time he saw #27 Belmonte scored either via assist or managed to get the shot himself. And every time that happened, when it was done, Marco felt his entire body go hot like a spark under his ass went off every time that he saw Danny Belmonte look his way. He knew he wasn’t actually looking at him, but for a moment, their eyes did meet. And maybe it was the high Marco felt himself under the influence of, but he waved.

It had been at that moment that he smiled and it was also at that moment that he realized that while Danny Belmonte had caught his eye, Marco’s waving managed to catch the attention of one of the Pinehurst Cheerleaders.

When the game came to a close and Marco panicked his way into trying to figure out how he was going to escape before, well a certain strawberry blonde cheerleader found him, it was too late. The girl who he would later find out was a Sophomore at Pinehurst named Theresa O’Connor, had practically invited him to a party that most of her squad were going. Marco didn’t know how to handle it. He didn’t want to be rude, either, so he sort of just went along with it.

And Tessa, which was what she told him to call her, was cute. So, in the back of his mind he was flattered that she liked him but, as Marco sat on the couch at this party at a southside house and TEssa was somewhere, likely being pulled away from him by her squad, Marco just sat there in a daze. He thought about how this happened. And thinking about that led Marco spending several minutes looking over at a group of jocks.

Danny was with them.

And he was being tipped upside down.

“7!” The boys surrounding Danny loudly roared.

In all that was holy, Danny’s shirt flew over his face and Marco saw what could only be described as something that would bless his dreams for the entire week that followed. He wasn’t toned like the rest of them, but Danny was the only one that caught Marco Brady’s gawking gaze and the only reason why Marco’s entire face went hot and red like a roasted tomato.

“8!”

“Keep calm, keep calm.” Marco repeated to himself, speaking as low as he could. Thankfully the music playing didn’t make it too obvious that he was gazing at Danny as if Marco even stood a chance. He wasn’t out and he didn’t even know if Danny swung that way. So it was hardly something that Marco should be doing, yet he couldn’t help it.

“9!”

Okay, Danny. Man up or go home.

Having used his arm and body strength, Danny found himself doing a handstand on the keg stand, with two of his teammates holding him up and another one of his teammates releasing the valve, letting the beer stream into the freshman’s mouth. This would be the second time Danny’s tried this within his first semester of high school and boy, he needed to beat his last record because any respectable man would get to at least thirty.

“10!”

Then again, his peers knew he was the youngest and thankfully, most didn’t pressure him to go beyond what he could handle. He didn’t drink as much as his twin, even at home. Still, Danny was stubborn and had no idea what his limits were! Plus, he wanted to be cool and show off. If not for himself, perhaps to get Francis’ attention… wherever he was. Last party, he could only do 10 seconds before choking. The team had a good laugh and taught him a few techniques after. Let’s see if he can put them in good use and get to twenty.

“11!”

With a red cup in her hand, Kylee Grimm shimmied to the EDM music, moving through the crowd. From a distance she saw her history nextdoor desk neighbor sitting on a couch and staring at… oh, the big doof in her spanish class. Danilo Belmonte. Probably on a high from the big win tonight. Sure, Francis Callaghan carried the team, like he usually did, but honestly, Danny kept up with his seniors, which impressed her, even scoring more than most of them. She was sure it impressed others too, like it clearly impressed Marco Castillo-Brady.

“12!”

Conveniently, the spot next to Marco opened and she slid herself on the chair right into him, playfully and mischievously bumping into his side, “You like what you see!” The mayor’s daughter loudly spoke over the music. While that should’ve been a question, it wasn’t because when Marco turned his attention to her, her dark gaze fell to his pants which revealed how interested he was in the italian basketball player. “I get it. Give him another year or so and he’s gonna be HOT, HOT, HOT! You should talk to him!”

“13!”

“What?”

Marco’s body jerked itself in a startled fashion when he heard a girl’s voice. Turning around, he saw it was Kylee Grimm. He had her in social studies. He couldn’t say that they were exceptionally close, but he has talked to her a few times and they even had a small project at the start of the semester, so Marco was almost used to her, but he was in such a daze watching Danny excelling at...whatever he was excelling at that he wasn’t ready for her.

Against his better judgement, Marco partially turned away from Danny. “Oh, hey Kylee,” he said after a few seconds of gathering himself. “I don’t think that will be a good idea,” he admitted, half-frowning at the girl. “Besides, I’m..fine right where I am.”

“Are you?” While her hazel eyes scrutinized, Kylee watched Marco in pity. Taking a sip of her drink, her gaze went from him to the basketball team. Their counting and drunk roaring turned into background noise as she continued to visually explore the party. For a moment, her dark gaze rested on the big wrestler senior, Rhett, overseeing the drinking game in silence. He was a dreamboat and so nice to look at. And yet, she’d be lying if she said she wasn’t a little intimidated by him.

Shaking the hopeful thoughts out of her head, she continued examining the area and finding anything that intrigued her. Turning her head to the makeshift dance floor, she saw a boy she had a music elective with, Pierce Mercer. He glanced over at her, through the hustle and bustle of the party, and she returned his stare with a smile.

He was cute, she liked cute.

Bringing her attention back to her couch buddy, she dramatically sighed, annoyed at how lackluster he was acting at the party of the year. “Want some advice from me, Marc?” That was a rhetorical question. “I’ve lived here for like a little over three years and meeting people is a hardcore bitch. I’m still considered an outsider even if my dad was born and raised here. But that’s beside the point!” This girl was loquacious to say the least, but she meant well. “One thing I decided the moment my dad was like pack your bags, we’re leaving Boston, was: I’m not going to be a bystander. Especially not at an Allison Davies’ party. Neither should you!”

As meddlesome as Kylee can be, she still cared about people in her own fucked up kind of way. She simply was using the tools her parents gave her to figure shit out as she went. She was persistent and demanding but she was also incredibly lonely. Thankfully, shortly after her move, she met Roddy and that helped her maneuver through adolescence. “You want to know something? Do your own research. You want that something? Go get it. You clearly seem interested in Danny boy. Stop sitting there with that hard on and think about carpe diem or some shit! What’s the worst that can happen?”

Marco’s embarrassment took central stage when he had a slight shade of red on his pale cheeks. So much so that he shifted his position on the couch somewhat to cross his legs in a way that hid what Kylee just pointed out. “What makes you think I’m even interested in him?” Marco asked. He wasn’t out and, while he didn’t peg Kylee as the homophobic type, he didn’t want to risk anything. “Maybe I’m just aroused by the--”

He looked around in a panic as if trying to find something very close to where Danny was that could explain it.

“--the keg. I mean it’s very…”

Dang it, Marco was looking at Danny again.

“...Sturdy.”

“Mmm, yeah. Sturdy.” Playfully, Kylee rolled her eyes and decided for Marco’s sake to use the keg as an analogy. “Just look how it shines. Such a nice looking keg. Why wouldn’t you be interested? I wonder if that beer has been imported. From Italy or something. Such fine beer.” Her smile went into a wide grin, now completely curious about Marco's reaction. “Don’t you just want to suck the tap yourself.”

“I-”

Marco’s cheeks went from strawberry to full on cherry red and he stumbled on whatever words he was going to say. He shook his head in an attempt to gather himself, trying to completely rid himself of the mental image that Kylee seemed to imply. It wasn’t the implication itself that made his embarrassment meter crack but just the fact she was pushing for something that he wasn’t even sure he was ready for. Marco was never great at approaching anyone that, for a lack of better words, interested him. Whether that was a girl or otherwise, he was always hesitant because he’d get lost in his own head before he’d ever consider a scenario that they wouldn’t immediately recoil from him making a move.

It’s why he was content in just looking at Danny do jock things from a distance and it’s why he felt especially awkward and tense as Kylee pushed and pushed.

With a sigh, he let a few moments of silence pass before he had to force his gaze away from Danny. “I’ve got no interest in doing that.” Part of that was the truth but only because Marco didn’t even know what he felt whenever he kept looking back at Danny. Jesus, how many times did that make it now? Five since Kylee started talking to him?

Garret “Rhett” Cleary, Caitlin Cleary’s older brother, and good friends with Francis Callaghan was quick to interject when he could tell that the freshman boy was exceeding his limits. When they reached 17 count, he grabbed ahold of the smaller kid, pulling the tap away from his lips. Danny started coughing profusely as he hung on Cece's brother’s shoulder. He didn’t even remember becoming upright. Everything happened so fast but the next thing he knew, Rhett was giving the basketball team a lecture about pressuring children.

Everything was dizzy and he was trying to register how far he went in the drinking game, if he made it to 20, but the next thing he knew Rhett had handed him a glass of water and told him to eat some bread. “Wait, Rhett, where’s Cece?” He hadn’t seen his best friend all day… which was weird now that he was thinking about it.

“Caught a ride with some friends.” Rhett firmly responded, visibly exhausted with all the babysitting he was doing for one night. The older boy said a couple of other things but Danny was too busy staring at Rhett’s wrestler muscles to really listen.

Did he pick me up?

Reality was feeling like a dream, maybe he did drink too much.

“Okay, okay! Sorry I overstepped but like, you could at least talk to him. To get to know him. I don’t understand the stigma of cliques. This town is small, so I feel like…” Her voice trailed off when she noticed the devil himself was making his way to them. Sure, he didn’t look like he was walking straight, but he was beaming, his smile reaching from ear to ear, and had an energetic bounce to his step. Completely caught off guard, Kylee muttered, “Uh…”

“Is this seat taken!?” The young jock slurred. Kylee looked between her and Marco, sitting on a loveseat. There was no extra seat, unless he meant the armrests. Or did he want? Seeing him staring at her, Kylee tilted her head, thinking she got the memo.

Oh, okay.

“I was… just getting up.” Turning to Marco, Kylee showed her teeth in excitement but also confusion. She wasn’t going to ruin this moment for him, so all she did was give him a thumbs up for good luck and got off the seat, going to her next objective: Pierce.

“Perfect. Awesome.” Danny slumped beside Marco and stared at the ceiling, watching the world spin. “Do you know why people like drinking so much? It’s so weird. It makes the world go round, and round, and round.”

thathumpthathumpthathump

Marco’s heartbeat was going especially fast. Hell, it became alarmed when Danny had spoke and caught Marco by surprise, but when Kylee excused herself and Danny took her spot (albeit plopping rather than sitting down) and all he could think about was how close Danny Belmonte was to him. The person Marco had spent most of the night watching was next to him and talking about drinking and what it was like.

“Y-yeah.” He didn’t know what to say in all honesty. He never got drunk, or at least in the way that Danny apparently was. And this was, like, the first impression that Danny was going to have of him. He had to do better than just a stuttering “yeah”. “Great job today!” Marco said with a wide smile. “At the game, I mean! You did great!” Oh, god he sounded like such a kissass right now.

“Francis was greater! You saw how many shots he made?!” With basketball being mentioned, Danny perked up and turned to the boy beside him. He looked familiar… like they had a class together or something. Or maybe he saw him in his sister’s shop? Regardless. Basketball! “I wanted to DUNK but Jillian said there’s other cool things I could do and that I still got a few more inches to grow. UGH! I want to dunk so badly.”

He blinked a few times at Danny. Out of all the scenarios that Marco entertained in some of his more far-fetched scenarios that might happen if he ever had the stones to talk to Danny, him just going on about basketball and Marco just sitting there listening wasn’t even close to the top ten. And Jillian? Was he talking about Jillian O’Brien? Had to be. Or maybe he wasn’t. Marco didn’t trust his brain right now. “You’ll get there, I’m sure of it!” Marco found himself cheering for some reason.

“I hope so.” Danny leaned back into the sofa and slumped even more than he had already, sliding down the chair a bit. Like a toddler, he grumbled, “I’m sad!”

“Why are you sad?” Marco asked, watching Danny slide down in disbelief.

With his ass on the floor now, he laid his head back on the chair and looked up at Marco, grumbling, “I saw something.” He saw Francis kissing Russ, who was not Allison. “It made me feel… funny.” He didn’t know why nor did he understand but he felt funny. Honestly, while she didn’t deserve it, Danny didn’t like Allison and at times wished she’d disappear. She had Francis and she was perfect in every single way. All his girlfriends, like Jillian and Cece, adored her.

Still, at this moment, he found himself hating Russ even more than her and he didn’t understand why. Not only did his image of Francis become less perfect, because he was cheating on his girlfriend, but he felt a tint of jealousy which didn’t make sense at all. Why was he jealous? “I don’t understand people.” Or he didn’t understand himself.

As Marco looked at Danny, he did so in a different way than he had all night. His gaze didn’t have any lust or anything of the like behind it, because Danny was acting differently too. The tone of his voice was different too. It was low and almost melancholy. He wanted so badly to comfort Danny in some way, but there was no way for Marco to know how a gesture like that might be interpreted. He couldn’t handle any possible rejection, so he had to think of another way to maybe cheer Danny up.

But what?

After a few moments of thinking, Marco had a lightbulb go off in his head. “I get it. People are hard to figure out. I mean, Professor Xavier doesn’t know what kind of person his students will be when they accept his offer to leave their home to join his school. I mean, look at Wolverine. He resisted and resisted, but eventually joined up. Everyone thought he was a prick. And maybe he was, but he proved himself when he became comfortable enough.” Marco realized that he was exposing himself to potential ridicule by talking about this stuff, but he didn’t see any other way to help Danny without saying “hey you’re hot, let’s have sex” and Marco Brady would never do that. “Like, I don’t know if this applies to what you’re going through and, I don’t know I should probably shut up now, but--”

“X-Men reference?” Danny dumbly blinked, his drunk self trying to connect what Marco said to his situation.

Before they could take their conversation any further, Reyrey came stomping down the stairs, having such a colorful language as he went through the living room, to the kitchen, and out the backdoor. All the while kicking everyone out of his house. Danny’s mom would be so disappointed if he ever cussed like that.

As everyone else rushed around, trying not to get in the serpent's way, the Italian boy pulled out his phone to the Belmonte sibling group thread. Vivia had quickly texted, can’t bring the twins home. Natalia had responded she had already left. Mira would likely ignore it. His other sisters were all mothers and he didn’t want to bother them, even if Cat did message asking if he needed a ride. With a little struggle, Danny texted back: I have ride. thx.

He didn’t but he didn’t have time to think about that right now. Shoving his phone back in his pants pocket, he sluggishly picked himself back up and looked at his new... friend? “Do you want to… walk together?” He knew if he walked home by himself he was likely going to pass out somewhere and get hyperthermia. Yeah, he wasn’t here to break his mom’s heart. He also wasn’t here to worry his siblings. So, asking his new friend was the next best thing!

Alerted by the raging Reyrey who came in ceasing all party activities, effective immediately, Marco did his best to focus on Danny and he was probably as stunned by what he asked as he was by the Serpent boss. He knew he should say something. His Ma didn’t raise a Wolverine-type prick. “Sure! I just..uh, need to get my coat.”
