"You can't fight Fate."
Essentially what I'm going for with this Doctor Fate is representing a classic golden-age style of hero, the super-wizard. In particular I intend for Kent to have been the original Doctor Fate, trained in the mystic arts in the 1960s by Nabu, the Ancient One. While he's an ageless sorcerer, he's an old man from a human perspective, as he was a veteran of both World Wars and didn't become a superhero until he was in his 60s. Kent is as powerful as ever, but the modern world is moving faster and faster every day, and he may be looking to pass the torch of Sorcerer Supreme to someone else, or at least be willing to take on one or a few apprentices. He has some of Doctor Strange's canon worked into him, but is essentially his predecessor and does not preempt Doctor Strange's existence, should that come down the line.
P L O T ( S ) & G O A L ( S ):
I want Kent to work as a Roaming Character, and in essence serve as the "tent pole" for all of the magic/supernatural heroes and villains that we accumulate, potentially culminating in the formation of the Magic Avengers/Justice League Dark. Think of him as more or less being Magic Superman for Magic Superheroes. As I said, he's taking more of a sideline role these days, looking to pass the torch to the next generation, which is why I prefer that Kent be a Roaming rather than Driving character. That said, any number of plots could be started from his rogue's gallery, or that of any other magic character in the roster; demons, dark ones, chaos lords, evil sorcerers, cthulhu, all fair game if Doctor Fate is in play.
On a personal level, I want to play Doctor Fate because I love magic characters (and need to get back to them, since I've been playing a lot of alien/sci-fi characters lately), and I want to play a classic super-wizard. I think Kent has a lot of potential for character drama by leveraging his status as Sorcerer Supreme and his high and mighty persona as Doctor Fate against his much more personable secret identity of an old archaeologist.

As I said before, while I haven't gone full Doctor StrangeFate (because Xavier is already taken) he has borrowed some elements from Doctor Strange, and should serve just as effectively in his place should none arise. I'm imagining his version of the Eye of Agamotto is instead the Eye of Anubis, and may have the Soul Stone embedded in it rather than the Time Stone.
Still up to the whims of Fate.
