-Nothung, the dragonslayer: A deadly sharp sword that can cut through steel. The weapon is incredibly strong, requiring the force only a Kryptonian could apply to even bend the sword. It is lightweight, feeling like a feather in the hand. The wielder of this weapon is granted the ability to call upon lightning and gives the wielder strength of a warrior (very strong for a human).

-The Helmet of will: A magical helmet that is made of the same material as Nothung. It defends against both mental and physical attacks.

-The absorbing shield: A magical shield made from the same material as Nothung. The shield is capable of absorbing energy attacks and storing them to be later blasted back out of the shield.

-Combat experience: Dermont has practiced fighting with various melee weapons for his LARP groups and so he is surprisingly capable as a swordsman.

Weaknesses –
Worthy of the weapon: Only those deemed worthy by Nothung may use it's abilities, to anyone else, it is a regular sword. Should Dermont not be pure of heart or somehow become unworthy as a warrior, he will not be able to use it.

-The weapon makes the man: Without his magical tools, Dermont is practically defenseless. He's not a particularly strong human either. Dermont knows this, and so he ties his worth as a hero directly to his weaponry.

-Starstruck: Dermont grew up hearing about these heroes/villians all the time, they are like celebrities to him, and sometimes when dealing with a big threat he can't help but geek out. This can be an issue when dealing with dangerous foes, especially, as he may still want their autograph.

-Just a human: No super strength, no amazing powers, no per-determined destiny or lineage of heroes. Dermont is your everyday dork, and he breaks easily. Physically or mentally.

BRIEF Bio – A kid who grew up bullied for his name, unnoticed for his looks, and generally a complete nobody all his life. With the real world being so harsh, he turned to the fantastical, enjoying reading and movies while other kids played outside. During his first year of college, he saw a flyer for a LARP group and eagerly joined. There he met his only true friend, a man in his late thirties who began teaching him how to play a 'Warrior'. Strange as it was, LARP became Dermont's favorite thing and so he threw himself into the hobby. He began reading old sword fighting manuscripts, practicing daily, and demolishing the competition.

It was during a huge LARPing event that his life changed drastically. While scouting deep into the woods to try to find a way to flank the opponents in tomorrow's 'battle', Dermont stumbled upon an enchanted grove. Sitting on a bizarre stone altar was a glowing sword. Mistaking it for the 'loot' scattered across the area, Dermont moved closer to inspect the weapon. When he touched it, the weapon spoke to him, proclaiming that Dermont was one of the greatest swordsmen of the time and the only one with a heart pure enough to be worthy. Dermont accepted the responsibility and so he was clad in new armor. He left the LARP event that night, instead becoming the newest 'Shining Knight' to fight crime in his Podunk town.

Seemingly aware of the sword and its new wielder, a greying and old Sir Justin would appear at Dermont's home one afternoon, offering to teach the boy if he would become a member of the Justice society. It was a dream come true for Dermont, and needless to say, he accepted.

Sample Story Arcs –

The question of steel: Someone manages to take or steal Nothung, and thus Dermont is rendered all but powerless. With the aid of his friends though, he learns that he is still useful without the sword, as they embark on a quest to get it back.

The worth of a warrior: After a particularly bad defeat, Nothung decides that Dermont is no longer worthy to wield it. Dermont must try to prove his worth without the weapon and have to find a substitute in the process.

Casualties at Comic-con: The older members of the JSA are asked to sign autographs at the old Civic City headquarters. Getting there they find the place is packed with people, and vendors, and to their surprise, a couple of older, retired villains have shown up to sign autographs too. Little does the JSA know, this is all just a ruse for these villains to get one last chance at revenge.

Peril from the past: Through dark magic in the past, Morgana LeFey has managed to alter history to become the ruler of the world. The heroes wake up to this change seemingly overnight and must find a way to change history back to its intended course.

Additional Notes – Dermont still lives with his mother, and is a struggling student at community college and a manager at his local Gap outside of his hero life. He also collects hero figurines, which he is too nervous to share with the heroes he now works with.

Secondary Character - Dr.Fate- Nabu is always looking for a hero to take up the mantle. With Dermont honor bound to stay virtuous, he's become a compatible host and as such, Doctor Fate always keeps a close eye on him, attempting to mold him into a proper host should the time come.

Name – Binah
Alias – Binah the Runekeeper
Age – "Don't ask a lady such a question." (Over 30)
Powers –
Passive Enhancements - Binah has enhanced durability, strength, speed, and sight. She is highly intelligent and knows a lot about mystical powers, especially runes. Her mystical knowledge has exposed her to horrors not meant for any individual, making her immune to psionic attacks or anything that would manipulate her emotions as nothing could compare to what she had seen.

Extreme Perception - Binah's perception is on another level, able to learn much about someone and how they think and act by just looking at them, and finding the truth from the smallest of glimpses.

Runes of Unlocking (Fairy) - Binah can manipulate the runes of unlocking, which can open or unlock anything either physical or conceptual affectionately named "Fairy". All of Binah's attacks inflict Fairy, which attempt to open wounds or cause new open wounds using their powers to open up anything. Fairy does more damage the more of it is stacked on someone, with Fairy stacks being lost after a bit of time. Fairy deals damage when the target moves or attacks, or when it expires. Binah's basic energy blasts are just blasts of pure fairy runes.

Runes of Locking and Sealing - Binah can also manipulate the runes of locking and sealing, allowing her to lock or seal anything either physically or conceptually while doing damage. These are used in the forms of her Chain and Lock attacks, the first slowing down the opponent for a time, while the latter sealing one of their abilities for a time making it unusable.

Stasis Pillar - Binah creates a pillar of stasis, a large runic object conjured then launched that pauses and carries anything caught within it and inflicting lots of damage/fairy when it explodes as it expires. Any attacks caught within the pillar are negated, although strong attacks will destroy the pillar.

Shockwave - Binah pulses a shockwave of spacial distortion that disrupts the area around her, canceling any projectiles and most magic the wave hits, disrupting the concentration of those it hits, and greatly increases the durability of <name> and her allies for a short time. This comes in the effect of a three wave burst that does little damage but disrupts more things, or a single wave explosion that does much more damage and can warp the very terrain. (Usually forming a small crater.)

The Weight of Sin - While in the heat of combat, Binah passively exposes the sins of herself, her allies, and her enemies. These sins weigh down the thoughts of all involved, and can be transferred to others by hitting them with attacks. When an individual receives 10 sins, they take a large amount of damage and all sin is removed from them, just to begin the cycle anew.

Weaknesses – Binah will prefer to observe an enemy or situation and will often need to be forced to intervene. Binah will gladly debate with a villain who monologues. While Binah can often see the secrets of others at the smallest of hints, she will refuse to speak of what she knows unless absolutely necessary (But will point out to that individual in a cryptic fashion that she knows...). When Binah speaks, her speech is very roundabout and rarely direct. Her melee combat skills are lacking outside of her basic enhancements. Her attacks deal low damage overall, often needing Fairy or Sin to deal significant damage, something Binah enjoys.

Binah wasn't always known by that name, but her former name had been forgotten when she laid her eyes upon the things that exist in the abyss in her search for magical secrets. She wasn't always 'heroic', and even now she doesn't tend to be as heroic as the others in the justice society, enjoying watching those criminals she fights try to cling onto life, as one can't feel truly alive unless they are nearing death. However she never actually does more than that, as its not the way of the hero and she would much, much rather be on the good side of these strong beings than the bad side of them and the world. Almost like something from her past before she gazed into the well of the universe is telling her not to go too far and make the same mistakes she possibly made before.

But of course completely changing oneself isn't possible, you can only really mellow out and observe.

The Beast of the Apocalypse: A seemingly benign trio of birds have been reported to be terrorizing a forest nicknamed "The Black Woods" due to very little light ever shining through the canopy of the many tall trees and a feeling of dread and despair that permeates the forest. There is a prophecy that if these birds ever meet, a beast of apocalyptic proportions is formed.

The Depths of the Abyss: There are many, many things that are just outside the sight of the average person. Stuff that they ignore that would drive them insane...

The Human Mind: Why is it some heroes or villains seem to develop out of nowhere. What is it that gives them their power and determination?

Monsters of Emotion and Sin: Monsters have been appearing recently near people who have been exhibiting severe levels of stress or heightened emotion. Each monster is different, of different disposition, but most seem to be extremely hostile.

Additional Notes – Binah lives a modest life when not doing hero work. She is rarely ever seen out of costume even when relaxing. She tends to spend most of her time in public spaces, often sitting down and drinking tea as she observes the lives of those around her.

The Endless Night: In the late hours of the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, the Shade arrives to prevent the sun from rising. Nocturne, whose understanding of darkness rivals the Shade's, must find a way to help the Justice Society make the sun rise again before the Shade's power grows too strong.

A Helping Hand: Following an intense battle that left Nocturne's magic temporarily burnt out, he is left without the ability to use umbramancy or his left arm. When evil doesn't rest, Nocturne can't stand by without putting up a fight, but struggles to be useful on the battlefield. Through the help of his friends, he learns that there is more to being a hero than magical powers.

The Beast in Black: Something inside of Nocturne begins to kick up dust as he is compromised by a side of his powers he thought to be long dormant. When a creature of all-consuming, malevolent darkness takes hold of Nocturne's mind and body, it is up to the Justice Society to contain him, and scour his recorded knowledge on the primordial darkness of the Shadowlands for answers before it is too late.

Live by The Scythe: After a crippling defeat that leaves Dermont unable to use Nothung, Nocturne uses the opportunity to help him train to fight. The two learn valuable lessons from each other about the ability to adapt to unfavorable circumstances, and what it means to set an example for others.

Name – Jennifer-Lynn Hayden

Alias – Jade

Age – 23

Powers – Jennifer inherited her father’s connection to the Starheart, allowing her to shoot energy blasts, create constructs of anything she can come up with, and fly using her internal energy. From her mother, Jennifer inherited a connection to plant life. She can use mental commands to accelerate plant growth and manipulate the movements of the plants as they grow.

Weaknesses – Use of her Starheart abilities are limited by her focus, and take a mental toll on her after extensive use. Her energy abilities can’t interact with anything made out of wood, the energy simply dissipating. In relation to her plant powers, Jennifer is less proficient as they only manifested in recent years. Also as someone with green skin, hair, and eyes, Jennifer has a hard time blending in.

Personality – Peppy, stubborn, empathic, righteous, self-critical

BRIEF Bio –
The daughter of Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern, and the villain known as Thorn, Jennifer inherited both her parents’ powers. Thorn hid the pregnancy from Alan, deciding to put Jennifer up for adoption. Raised by the Hayden family, from a young age they knew she was different as her skin, hair, and eyes turned green a few months after birth. But due to the rising popularity of superheroes, Jennifer would be accepted as a kid, especially after her powers began to manifest.

By the time she was a teenager, Jennifer was curious about where her powers came from. So she did a DNA test for an ancestry site where she learned that she had a twin brother who didn’t live far from her. The two siblings would eventually meet up, during which they both learned that the other had superpowers. They would decide to become a crime fighting duo as Jade and Obsidian.

By the time they were 18, both siblings decided to try and join a super-team. After being turned down by most of the big teams, they were accepted into a new team called Infinity Inc. It was with Infinity Inc that Jade came into her own as a hero, discovering her plant powers. She would fall in love during this time, graduate high school, and then briefly attend college. But the biggest change for Jennifer would be discovering that Alan Scott was her father.

Following the dissolution of Infinity Inc, Jennifer would be offered a spot with the Justice Society. While she initially turned it down, Jennifer would decide to join the most recent iteration of the team after the last big crisis.

Golden Age Legacy – Green Lantern (Alan Scott)

Sample Story Arcs –
The Power of Magic: As a wielder of the Starheart, Jennifer is tracked down by the Sentinels of Magic, an order of powerful mages who govern and protect the magical realms. The Sentinels have need of the Starheart as Jennifer is dragged into a potential crisis.

The Missing Leaf: Glad to have found both her brother and father, Jennifer decides to try and track down her mother. But will she be able to locate the former villain, and will she be able to take the truth of why she let her children go?

The Inner Nature: As Jennifer’s plant based powers begin to grow in strength, she becomes aware of the Green, the energy field that connects all plant life. But this awakening causes people connected to other energies like the Red or Black to find her and interfere in her life, as the elemental forces fight for control of the material realm.

Additional Notes – So I’m not super knowledgeable about this character as, while I enjoy WWII era superheroes, I tend to favor Marvel more. But Green Lantern is always cool and I wanted to start playing more female characters to help diversify my writing.

Secondary Character - Amazing-Man (Markus Clay): Grandson of the original Amazing-Man (Will Everett), Markus inherited his powers touch based matter transformation. This is a mighty legacy as the original Amazing-Man was both one of the first black superheroes, but also a key individual in the Civil Rights Movement.

Name – Mercy Graves
Alias – Mercy [Formerly Vanilla]
Age – 56
Powers – Amazon-lite: Somewhere down Mercy’s family tree is an Amazon. As a result Mercy posses above average strength, speed, durability and immortality. Mostly unrelated to her bloodline, Mercy is also skilled in hand-to-hand combat, firearms and anything else needed to keep her protectee’s life preserved.

Cyber-Arm: Once a cutting edge piece of technology, now left far behind the pieces LexCorp is capable of producing now. The arm is a great deal stronger than Mercy’s enhanced self, capable of making an underprepared superman flinch. It can be covered in a synthetic skin sleeve but Mercy’s sleeve has long since been reduced to scrap from normal wear and tear.
Weaknesses – Human-Plus: Despite her Amazonian heritage, Mercy can still be killed but any means a human can, just with a little more effort.

Missing-Arm: Despite her cybernetic arm, Mercy doesn’t always wear her arm and being caught without it leaves her off balance, down a ‘weapon’ and taking a moment to get back used to being down an arm.

BRIEF Bio – Mercy’s life began on the streets of Metropolis, growing up in a low income household with not much to do left not many other options for the young girl. Her knack for tussling and above average strength eventually brought her to the attention of the business mogul Lex Luthor Sr. when the two crossed paths. Luthor took Mercy under his wing, providing her higher education and refining her physical skills all in an act to raise someone to lay down their life for him. This came to fruition as Mercy was eventually hired by LexCorp as Luthor’s personal bodyguard. Mercy took pride in her work, doing her best to keep her hot headedness reserved for foiling attempts on Lex’s life in an attempt to not sully her employer and friend’s reputation.

As time went on Lex got older but Mercy’s aging seemed to be slowing to a crawl. At first it was written off as good genetics but after a couple decades there was obviously more to it than that. This slowed aging process lead to Mercy’s employment carrying over to Lex’s son after the former eventually passed away. Mercy had a lot more friction with Lex Jr’s employ, resulting in many more attempts on her new protecter’s life. One such attempt form a member of the super community resulted in Mercy getting her arm unintentionally lasered off and replaced by Jr using the best tech money could produce at the time. It was a nice sentiment in Mercy’s view but Jr saw it more so as an investment. Tensions began to finally boil over with the crisis revolving around the Everyman project and Lex taking on a new super up bodyguard by the name of Hope. Mercy and Hope got along well but Mercy could read the writing on the wall and knew Jr was getting less and less pleased with Mercy’s misgivings towards their actions. As such Mercy quit before she could be fired and quickly went underground, just in case Jr didn’t take her early departure well.

During her time off the grid, Mercy tried to wash her conscience using the moniker Vanilla, a great disguise and few white lies that resulted in her getting a position on the ex-Everyman project heroes team, Infinity Inc. Looking back, Mercy thought she did some real good on the team but at the time she felt whatever she did wasn’t good enough and this sentiment lead to her nearly killing a crook the team came into contact with after letting loose. Much like her employment under Jr, Mercy left the team shortly after her outburst coming to terms that she could never be a hero. However, years later, a mostly down on her luck Mercy would get tracked down and extended an invite to give super heroics one more shot as a member of the JSA. She would accept.
